The objective of this umbrella review was to compile and understand the published presurgical risk factors associated with the development of CPSP for various surgery types.Methods: Six databases were searched from January 2000 to June 2023 to identify meta-analyses, scoping studies, and systematic reviews investigating presurgical CPSP predictors in adult patients. Articles were screened by title/abstract and subsequently by full text by two independent reviewers. The selected papers were appraised for their scientific quality and validity. Data were extracted and descriptively analyzed.Results: Of the 2344 retrieved articles, 36 reviews were selected for in-depth scrutiny. The number of primary studies in these reviews ranged from 4 to 317. The surgery types assessed were arthroplasty (n = 13), spine surgery (n = 8), breast surgery (n = 4), shoulder surgery (n = 2), thoracic surgery (n = 2), and carpal tunnel syndrome (n = 1). One review included a range of orthopedic surgeries; six reviews included a variety of surgeries. A total of 39 presurgical risk factors were identified, some of which shared the same defining tool. Risk factors were themed into six broad categories: psychological, pain-related, health-related, social/lifestyle-related, demographic, and genetic. The strength of evidence for risk factors was inconsistent across different reviews and, in some cases, conflicting. A consistently high level of evidence was found for preoperative pain, depression, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing.Conclusion: This umbrella review identified a large number of presurgical risk factors which have been suggested to be associated with the development of CPSP after various surgeries. The identification of presurgical risk factors is crucial for the development of screening tools to predict CPSP. Our findings will aid in designing screening tools to better identify patients at risk of developing CPSP and inform strategies for prevention and treatment.Plain Language Summary: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is pain experienced predominantly at the surgical site for longer than 3 months after a surgical procedure. Depending on surgery type, it can affect between 10 and 80% of people undergoing major surgeries, which may have negative effects such as a lower quality of life, disability, and persistent opioid use. Targeted identification and management of at risk patients in the presurgical phase may decrease the risk of CPSP. This umbrella review generated a list of potential risk factors for CPSP from evidence-based reviews of the current literature.Thirty-nine presurgical risk factors were identified in this review. Risk factors are divided into six broad categories: psychological, pain-related, health-related, demographic, genetic, and social/lifestyle-related. Although the strength of evidence for individual risk factors varied across reviews, risk factors in the psychological category consistently showed a strong impact on the development of CPSP.It is vital to understand which individuals are vulnerable and at risk for CPSP. The findings of this umbrella review will aid in designing screening tools to identify surgical candidates at risk. Some risk factors, such as genetics, cannot be altered. However, many identified risk factors are modifiable and may inform strategies for the prevention and treatment of CPSP using screening tools. Our findings may guide future research to consider an in-depth analysis of risk factor characterization to group modifiable presurgical risk factors. Nigeria, with a population of over 190 million people, is rated among the 10 countries with the highest burden of infectious and zoonotic diseases globally. In Nigeria, there exist a sub-optimal surveillance system to monitor and track priority zoonoses. We therefore conducted a prioritization of zoonotic diseases for the first time in Nigeria to guide prevention and control efforts. Towards this, a two-day in-country consultative meeting involving experts from the human, animal, and environmental health backgrounds prioritized zoonotic diseases using a modified semi-quantitative One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization tool in July 2017. Overall, 36 of 52 previously selected zoonoses were identified for prioritization. Five selection criteria were used to arrive at the relative importance of prioritized diseases based on their weighted score. Overall, this zoonotic disease prioritization process marks the first major step of bringing together experts from the human-animal-environment health spectrum in Nigeria. Importantly, the country ranked rabies, avian influenza, Ebola Virus Disease, swine influenza and anthrax as the first five priority zoonoses in Nigeria. Finally, this One Health approach to prioritizing important zoonoses is a step that will help to guide future tracking and monitoring of diseases of grave public health importance in Nigeria.

Microwave hybrid heating (MHH) has become soldering's alternative method for lead-free solder alloys due to its benefits towards modern microtechnology, such as shorter processing time, lower energy consumption and lower defect rate. Nonetheless, it still requires susceptors to improve its heating performance, such as SiC, which is known for its high loss factor under low microwave frequencies. In this study, the effect of microwave hybrid heating on mechanical properties, as well as the microstructure of solder joint between Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu (SAC305) solder alloy and Cu substrate was investigated. Solder joint was created using MHH with different soldering parameters (amount of SiC in a range of 3-7g and exposure time in a range of 7-10min) between SAC305 solder alloy (in the form of wire and paste) and Cu substrate. Then, a lap shear test was carried out following a standard of ASTM D1002 to determine solder joint strength. Characterization was made using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that solder wire produced the highest solder joint strength with the value of 115.45 MPa when using 3.05g of SiC for 8.92min soldering time. Meanwhile, the solder paste produced 109.76MPa solder joint strength when using 3.03 g of SiC for 9.39 min soldering time. The intermetallic compound (IMC) form was scallop-like Cu6Sn5, both solder/substrate joints with a thickness of 2.87 μm for solder wire and 3.62 μm for solder paste. Nonetheless, an excessive amount of SiC would generate more heat in MHH and increase the IMC thickness as well as reduce shear strength, which eventually decreases the solder joint stability. Background and aims – Climate change induces increasing temperatures and drought, with possible profound shifts in species’ presence and distribution. Ecological niche models are widely used to assess plant species responses to climate change. However, such data are scarce for West Africa, particularly for vulnerable multipurpose species. This study focuses on modelling the ecological niche and the conservation status of the multipurpose tree Detarium senegalense to improve insights into its habitat suitability in West Africa under past, present, and future climatic conditions. This will provide an essential basis for setting up global management plans through efficient conservation and ecological restoration policies. Material and methods – The potential distribution of D. senegalense under past, current, and future climate scenarios were assessed using four algorithms including generalized additive models (GAM), generalized linear models (GLM), random forest (RF), and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). We also assessed the shift direction of suitable habitats and the conservation status of the species based on IUCN criteria. Overall, 220 occurrences were combined with a set of five bioclimatic variables to run the models. Key results – Models performed well with good values of AUC (0.92) and TSS (0.73). Isothermality (41.10%) and Precipitation of Wettest Month (21.50%) contributed most to the distribution of the species. The distribution of D. senegalense was relatively constant from the past to the present but could decrease in the next decades. In the future, only 17.70% and 13.98% of the areas were predicted to be suitable under respectively ssp245 and ssp585. In protected areas, the suitable areas under ssp245 were estimated at 21.01% with a decrease of 2.50% and 14.60% with a decrease of 8.61% under ssp585 by 2050. The direction of the distribution shifted to the south-east under future climate scenarios. The conservation status assessment of the species is Least Concern (LC). Conclusion – This study improves our understanding of the past, present-day, and future distribution of the species and provides support to better manage the conservation of D. senegalense in West Africa.

Objectives: Cupping therapy is a widely used complementary medicine for the treatment of migraine headaches globally. However, conflicting evidence exists on its effectiveness. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of cupping therapy in treating migraine headache disorder.Methods: Seven databases were systematically searched: PubMed/MEDLINE, Clinicaltrials. gov, Cochrane CENTRAL, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, SinoMed, and the National Science and Technology Library. The primary endpoints are the treatment success and the pain intensity reduction. The secondary endpoints were adverse events (AEs) risk and improvement in quality of life (QoL), which was based on the Migraine Disability Scale (MIDAS). Subgroup analyses were performed based on the cupping techniques (wet and dry cupping) and adjunctive complementary treatments (i.e. acupuncture and/or collateral pricking).Results: Eighteen trials out of 348 records were included, pooling 1,446 participants (n = 797 received cupping therapy). Treatment success was significantly higher among those with cupping therapy (risk ratio [RR] [95% CI] = 1.83 [1.52-2.21]); with significant improvement observed only with wet cupping (RR [95% CI] = 1.88 [1.53-2.30]). The adjunctive complementary therapy did not achieve a greater amplitude of treatment success compared to cupping therapy alone. Furthermore, cupping therapy showed significant pain reduction compared to baseline (standardized mean difference [SMD] [95% CI] = 0.55 [0.39-0.70]) and achieved fewer risks of AEs (RR [95% CI] = 1.88 [1.53-2.30]). However, cupping did not improve the overall QoL (MIDAS SMD [95% CI] = –0.79 [–3.55-1.98]).Conclusion: Cupping therapy was an effective complementary modality to treat migraine headaches. However, it did not demonstrate improvement in QoL (PROSPERO: CRD42024514509).

The literature on laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy for management of UVP is very scarce from Saudi Arabia. This research examined the feasibility, clinical utility, and safety of laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy in a Saudi setting.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, including all patients who met the inclusion criteria. The laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy technique was adapted with modifications from the “Oxford hysteropexy”. The primary endpoint was overall success, defined as anatomical success in all vaginal compartments (UVP grade 0 or 1 postoperatively). The secondary endpoint was the mean change in point C. Descriptive data were summarized with numbers and percentages, while numerical data used means ± standard deviations. Fisher’s exact and Student’s t tests were used for univariate analyses. Significant surgical outcome predictors were identified via logistic regression, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant.Results: Overall, 21 patients met the inclusion criteria. The most frequent indication for laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy was UVP without anterior or posterior wall prolapse (n = 15, 71.4%), whereas the most frequent grade of UVP was grade III (n = 13, 61.9%). One patient (4.8%) required switch to laparotomy due to severe adhesions. No perioperative complications were recorded. The mean change in point C and hospital stay were 5.8 ± 2.1 (range: 0– 8) and 1.4 ± 0.6 days (range: 1– 3), respectively. Surgical success was achieved in 18 patients (85.7%). Only three patients experienced recurrences (one, two, and six months postoperatively). The mean change in point C was significantly higher in successful cases contrasted with the failed cases (6.5 versus 1.3).Conclusion: Laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy for management of uterovaginal prolapse revealed technical feasibility, safety, and beneficial utility of the procedure. Electricity, which emerged as a secondary energy source, has been one of the important input items in production since its widespread use. In this study, it is analyzed in 7 countries (Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Qatar, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia) in the high-income Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries group. Using data on public and commercial services, residential, industrial, total other sectors (agriculture, transportation), total electricity consumed and GDP for the period 1990-2021, the relationship between sectoral electricity consumption and economic growth is analyzed with the Panel Granger causality test. As a result of the analysis, while there is no long-run relationship between public and commercial services, residential, total other sectors (agriculture, transportation) and total electricity consumed and growth, there is no causality relationship between these variables, while there is a unidirectional causality relationship from growth to electricity consumption in industry. Contrary to previous studies, the reason for the absence of a causality relationship from electricity consumption to GDP growth in this study is that export revenues from natural resources and high-tech products make a significant contribution to the GDP formation of the countries included in the analysis. These results show that, contrary to the same directional relationship between electricity consumption and GDP growth in the literature, it is not valid for natural resource and high technology exporter countries. We can say that the results of the study make an important contribution to the literature in this respect.

Abstract The data regarding primary FSGS (pFSGS) from different parts of the world differ. While the prevalence of pFSGS has been increasing in Western countries like the USA, it follows an inconsistent trend in Europe and Asia and a decreasing trend in Far Eastern countries such as China in the last two decades. There are undetermined factors to explain those national and geographic discrepancies. Herein, we aimed to reveal the current prevalence with clinical and histopathological characteristics of pFSGS in Turkish adults. This study includes the biopsy-proven pFSGS patients data recorded between 2009 and 2019, obtained from the national multicenter primary glomerulonephritis registry system of the Turkish Society of Nephrology Glomerular Diseases (TSN-GOLD) database. 850 of the 3875 primer glomerulonephritis patients(21.9%) have pFSGS. The mean age is 40.5 ± 14.2 and 435 (51.2%) of patients are male. Nephrotic syndrome is the most common biopsy indication (59.2%). 32.6% of patients have hematuria, 15.2% have leukocyturia and 7.8% have both. Serum creatinine, albumin, and proteinuria are 1.0 mg/dL (IQR = 0.7–1.4) mg/dl, 3.4 ± 0.9 g/dl, 3400 mg/day(IQR, 1774–5740), respectively. Females have lower mean arterial pressure (− 2.2 mmHg), higher eGFR (+ 10.0 mL/min/1.73 m2), and BMI (+ 1.6 kg/m2) than males. Thickened basal membrane(76.6%) and mesangial proliferation (53.5%) on light microscopy are the major findings after segmental sclerosis. IgM (32.7%) and C3 (32.9%) depositions are the most common findings on immunofluorescence microscopy. IgM positivity is related to lower eGFR, serum albumin, and higher proteinuria. The prevalence of pFSGS is stable although slightly increasing in Turkish adults. The characteristics of the patients are similar to those seen in Western countries.

Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria pose a severe health risk globally. This study focused on detecting ESBL genes in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from a recreational water source and the waste water from a tertiary hospital in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The isolates (twenty-two) were screened phenotypically for extended spectrum beta lactamase production using the double disk synergy test. Of the isolates, 13 (59.1%) were E. coli, while 9 (40.9%) were Klebsiella pneumoniae; 17 (77.3%) were isolated from the waste water and 5 (22.7%) were isolated from the recreational water. Six (27.2%) of them showed ESBL production phenotypically; however, PCR amplification of the ESBL genes showed that only five of them had at least one of the genes. The presence of ESBL bacteria in hospital waste water and surface waters highlights that water matrices are important routes of transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acute paraquat (PQ) toxicity induces redox cycling leading to fatality in both man and animals with clinical management being supportive therapy due to lack of specific and effective antidote. This study thus aimed at determining the sero-biochemical and pathological changes induced by acute PQ administration in male rats and the mitigating role of sodium selenite. Forty male rats were used for the study and were grouped into 5 of eight rats viz: Group I (control) administered distilled water (2 ml/kg), group II (15 mg/kg of PQ), group III (15 mg/kg of PQ + 0.3 mg/kg sodium selenite), group IV (30 mg/kg of PQ) and group V (30 mg/kg of PQ + 0.3 mg/kg sodium selenite). Administration were achieved per os and lasted for a week. Sera, lungs, liver and kidney samples were harvested at the end of the experiment. Result showed a significant (p < 0.05) higher liver enzymes, urea and creatinine in treated groups when compared to control. Biomarkers of oxidative stress revealed a significant (p < 0.05) increased superoxide dismutase and malondealdehyde activities of the lungs and liver. A dose-dependent pathologic lesion was also observed with milder lesions in selenium supplemented groups. The results demonstrate that selenium supplementation may be a promising therapy and should further be clinically validated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the impact of poultry management systems (intensive and extensive) on selenium and zinc concentrations and heterophil to lymphocyte ratio in chickens. Sixty chickens comprising 20 broilers, 20 local chickens and 20 layers obtained from poultry markets and houses around Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria were used in this study. Five millilitres of blood were collected through the brachial vein to analyse for selenium, zinc and complete blood count using atomic absorption spectrophotometry and standard haematological methods, respectively. There was a significantly (P<0.05) higher red blood cell, haemoglobin and pack cell volume values in local chickens raised in the extensive management system compared to broilers and layers raised in the intensive management system. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the white blood cell count between layers and local chickens. However, layers had higher white blood cell counts than local chickens. In contrast, local chickens had significantly (P<0.05) lower white blood cell count than broilers. The respective lymphocyte and heterophil counts were significantly (P<0.05) higher and lower in local chickens raised extensively compared to layers raised intensively. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in monocyte, eosinophil and basophil count in chickens raised from both management systems. Chickens raised in the extensive management system had a significantly (P<0.05) higher selenium concentration with a lower heterophil to lymphocyte ratio than those raised in the intensive management system but had a significantly (P<0.05) lower zinc concentration. Therefore, high selenium levels and low heterophil to lymphocyte ratio could contribute to the resistance of chickens to various stressors associated with an extensive management system as selenium is a known immunomodulator. Abstract Background Owing to crowded and unsanitary conditions, internally displaced persons (IDPs) have an increased risk of COVID-19 infection. Adoption of COVID-19 preventive measures among this population is premised on accurate information, adequate knowledge, and risk perception. We assessed COVID-19 knowledge and risk perception and investigated the association between risk perception and COVID-19 preventive measures, including vaccination among IDPs in Northeast Nigeria. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study during July–December 2022 and sampled 2,175 IDPs using stratified sampling. We utilized a 12-point assessment tool to evaluate COVID-19 knowledge. Participants who scored ≥ 6 points were considered to have adequate knowledge. We used a 30-item Risk Behavior Diagnosis Scale to assess COVID-19 risk perception and evaluated each item on a 5-point Likert scale. Participants were divided into risk perception categories by the median of Likert scale scores. We performed weighted logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with risk perception. Pearson’s chi-squared with Rao-Scott adjustment was used to determine the relationship between risk perception and COVID-19 preventive measures. Results Of 2,175 participants, 55.7% were 18–39 years old, 70.9% were females, and 81.7% had no formal education. Among the IDPs, 32.0% (95% CI: 28.8 – 35.0) were considered to have adequate COVID-19 knowledge, and 51.3% (95% CI: 47.8 – 54.8) perceived COVID-19 risk as high. Moreover, 46.3% (95% CI: 42.8 – 50.0) had received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 33.1% (95% CI: 29.8 – 36.0) received two doses. Adequate knowledge (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 2.10, [95% CI: 1.46 – 3.03]) and post-primary education (AOR = 3.20, [95% CI: 1.59 – 6.46]) were associated with risk perception. Abstract Neuroscientific research has consistently shown more extensive non-visual activity in the visual cortex of congenitally blind humans compared to sighted controls; a phenomenon known as crossmodal plasticity. Whether or not crossmodal activation of the visual cortex retracts if sight can be restored is still unknown. The present study, involving a rare group of sight-recovery individuals who were born pattern vision blind, employed visual event-related potentials to investigate persisting crossmodal modulation of the initial visual cortical processing stages. Kur’ân, insanın değerini genel olarak inanç ve davranışları üzerinden ölçü almıştır denilebilir. Kur’ân’ın bu genel tavrına rağmen müslüman kültürdeki insan için kullanılan “eşref’i-mahlûkât/mahlûkâtın en şereflisi’’ söylemi oldukça iddialı bir ifadedir. Dinî gelenekte meşhur olan bu ifade, gözlemlerimize göre genelde İsrâ Sûresi yetmişinci âyetle irtibatlandırılmaktadır. Fakat mezkûr âyette bu ifadeyi bütün yönleri ile destekleyecek bir delil yoktur. Âyette insanın bütün varlıklardan değil bazı varlıklardan üstün kılındığı söylenmiştir. Buna rağmen ‘‘insanın en değerli varlık olduğu’’ söyleminin bu âyet ile delillendirilmesi kasti olmasa da âyetin söylemediği bir anlamı ona hamletmek yanlışını doğurmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, ‘‘eşref’i-mahlûkât’’ ifadesinin gerçekliği bu ifadeye delil olarak zikredilen el-İsrâ Sûresi 17/70. Âyeti bağlamında inceleme konusu yapılacaktır.

The present study aimed to test over a six-month period different synthetic flavors in zebrafish (Danio rerio) as an experimental model. Specifically, two attractive and one repulsive synthetic flavors were added (1% w/w) to a specific zebrafish diet, which was administered to the fish during the whole life cycle (from larvae to adults), to evaluate their physiological responses, emphasizing fish welfare, feed intake, growth, reward mechanisms, and reproductive performances. Fish welfare was not affected by all tested flavors, while both attractive flavors promoted fish feed ingestion and growth. The results were supported by both molecular and immunohistochemical analyses on appetite-regulating neurohormonal signals, along with the influence of the feed hedonic properties induced by the brain reward sensation, as demonstrated by the dopamine receptor gene expression. Finally, the present study demonstrated that a higher feed intake also had positive implications on fish reproductive performances, suggesting a promising role of synthetic flavors for the aquaculture industry. In conclusion, the results highlighted the potential of synthetic flavors to improve fish feeding strategies by providing a consistent and effective alternative to traditional stimulants, thereby reducing dependence on natural sources.

Abstract Background Currently, over two million persons are internally displaced because of the complex humanitarian emergency in Nigeria’s northeast region. Due to crowded and unsanitary living conditions, the risk of communicable disease transmission, morbidity, and mortality among this population is high. This study explored patterns and factors associated with health-seeking among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northeast Nigeria to inform and strengthen disease surveillance and response activities. Methods In a cross-sectional study conducted during June–October 2022, we employed stratified sampling technique to select 2,373 IDPs from 12 IDPs camps. A semi-structured tool was used to collect data on health-seeking patterns, socio-demographics, households, and IDPs camps characteristics. We classified health-seeking patterns into three outcome categories: ‘facility care’ (reference category), ‘non-facility care’ (patent medicine vendors, chemists, traditional healers, religious centers), and ‘home care/no care’. We performed complex survey data analysis and obtained weighted statistical estimates. Univariate analysis was conducted to describe respondents’ characteristics and health-seeking patterns. We fitted weighted multivariable multinomial logistic regression models to identify factors associated with health-seeking patterns. Results Of 2,373 respondents, 71.8% were 18 to 39 years old, 78.1% were females, and 81.0% had no formal education. Among the respondents, 75.7% (95% CI: 72.9–78.6) sought ‘facility care’, 11.1% (95% CI: 9.1–13.1) sought ‘non-facility care’, while 13.2% (95% CI: 10.9–15.4) practiced ‘home care/no care’. Respondents who perceived illness was severe (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 0.15, [95% CI: 0.08–0.30]) and resided in officially-recognized camps (AOR = 0.26, [95% CI: 0.17–0.39]) were less likely to seek ‘non-facility care’ compared to ‘facility care’. Similarly, respondents who resided in officially-recognized camps (AOR = 0.58, [95% CI: 0.36–0.92]), and received disease surveillance information (AOR = 0.42, [95% CI: 0.26–0.67) were less likely to practice ‘home care/no care’ rather than seek ‘facility care’. Conclusions This population exhibited heterogeneous patterns of health-seeking at facility and non-facility centers. Perception of illness severity and camps’ status were major factors associated with health-seeking. To enhance surveillance, non-facility care providers should be systematically integrated into the surveillance network while ramping up risk communication to shape perception of illness severity, prioritizing unofficial camps.

Abstract Background Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, an X-linked disorder that is more common in males, is the most prevalent blood enzyme deficiency, affecting 5% of the population worldwide. Its prevalence in Saudi Arabia varies greatly from one region to another (4.7% to 12%), and no related data are available for the country’s Al-Qassim region. Methods This was a retrospective medical record-based study. Eligible patients were those who visited Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib Hospital in Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, between June 2021 and November 2022, and underwent the test for G6PD enzyme deficiency. The study sample consisted of (n = 313) randomly selected Saudi patients. G6PD enzyme activity was evaluated using spectrophotometry. Results The prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 2.9%. The proportion of male patients (100%) was significantly higher than that of female patients. 88.9% of patients with G6PD deficiency experienced episodes of acute hemolysis and reported a history of favism, whereas 77.8% of the patients had a family history of favism. Conclusion The prevalence of G6PD deficiency was low in Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia.

The Sn-Pb solder is a conventional solder used in electronic assembling applications which needs replacement due to environmental concerns and legislation. In this study it was found that Pb-free Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solder was able to replace Sn-Pb solders. The soldering process was successfully performed with SAC305 by applying modulated pulse laser technique in the duty cycle of a 1070 nm fiber laser under ambient atmospheric pressure. The laser power is set at a constant of 85 W and the pulse frequency was 250 Hz with different duty cycles of 99, 90, 80, 70, 60 and 50%. There was a surface finish of electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) located between solder ball and Cu substrate. The formation of (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 as an intermetallic compound (IMC) layer at the SAC305/ENIG interface were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) fitted with and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). As a result, the modulated pulse affected the growth behaviour of interfacial layer. Also, a Ni3P layer is formed as the interfacial layer. Finally, the results showed that the hardness values fluctuated according to the duty cycle percentage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aquafeed’s contamination by microplastics can pose a risk to fish health and quality since they can be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and translocate to different tissues. The liver acts as a retaining organ with the consequent triggering of oxidative stress response. The present study aimed to combine the use of natural astaxanthin with natural-based microcapsules to counteract these negative side effects. European seabass juveniles were fed diets containing commercially available fluorescent microplastic microbeads (1–5 μm; 50 mg/kg feed) alone or combined with microencapsulated astaxanthin (AX) (7 g/kg feed; tested for half or whole feeding trial—30 or 60 days, respectively). Fish from the different dietary treatments did not evidence variations in survival and growth performance and did not show pathological alterations at the intestinal level. However, the microplastics were absorbed at the intestinal level with a consequent translocation to the liver, leading, when provided solely, to sod1, sod2, and cat upregulation. Interestingly, the dietary implementation of microencapsulated AX led to a mitigation of oxidative stress. In addition, the microcapsules, due to their composition, promoted microplastic coagulation in the fish gut, limiting their absorption and accumulation in all the tissues analyzed. These results were supported by in vitro tests, which demonstrated that the microcapsules promoted microplastic coagula formation too large to be absorbed at the intestinal level and by the fact that the coagulated microplastics were released through the fish feces.

The paper presents the results of studying the spatial and seasonal atmospheric temperature characteristics of Jalingo metropolis, Nigeria, with the aim of assessing seasonal temperature variations for thermal comfort planning. Temperature data for this study was collected across the local climate zones, otherwise known as thermal climate zones (TCZ), following the TZC classification of the area. Temperature data was collected for 30 days continuously and simultaneously across the TCZ. The collection of temperature data was done in the months of April and August 2021, and January 2022 – representing the dry season, the rainy season and the Harmattan period respectively. A Thermochron Ibutton sensor by Maxim Incorporation was used to collect temperature data, while the specific series used was DS1921. An improvised automated weather station was constructed to house the sensor. The result of the study indicates that air temperature varies considerably within Jalingo metropolis, as well as throughout the seasons, thus affecting human thermal comfort in the study area, as temperature is found to correlate well with both human morbidity and mortality, especially regarding cardiovascular diseases. The paper recommends increasing ventilation and nature-based solution to reduce high temperatures through tree planting in order to improve human thermal comfort in Jalingo metropolis area.

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are at high risk for COVID-19 transmission because of congested and unsanitary living conditions. COVID-19 vaccination is essential to build population immunity and prevent severe disease among this population. We determined the prevalence and factors associated with intention to accept COVID-19 vaccine among IDPs in Northeast Nigeria. This cross-sectional study, conducted during July-December 2022, included 1,537 unvaccinated IDPs from 18 IDPs camps. We performed a complex sample survey analysis and described participants' characteristics and vaccination intention with weighted descriptive statistics. We fitted weighted logistic regression models and computed adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals to identify factors associated with intention to accept COVID-19 vaccine. Of 1,537 IDPs, 55.4% were 18-39 years old, 82.6% were females, and 88.6% had no formal education. Among them, 63.5% (95% CI: 59.0-68.1) expressed intention to accept COVID-19 vaccine. Among the IDPs who intended to reject vaccine, 42.8% provided no reason, 35.3% had COVID-19 misconceptions, 9.5% reported vaccine safety concerns, and 7.4% felt no need. IDPs who perceived COVID-19 as severe (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 2.31, [95% CI: 1.35-3.96]), perceived COVID-19 vaccine as effective (AOR = 4.28, [95% CI: 2.46-7.44]) and resided in official camps (AOR = 3.29, [95% CI: 1.94-5.56]) were more likely to accept COVID-19 vaccine. However, IDPs who resided 2 kilometers or farther from the nearest health facility (AOR = 0.34, [95% CI: 0.20-0.58]) were less likely to accept vaccine. Intention to accept COVID-19 vaccine among the IDPs was suboptimal. To improve vaccination acceptance among this population, health education and risk communication should be intensified to counter misinformation, strengthen vaccine confidence, and shape perception of COVID-19 severity, focusing on IDPs in unofficial camps. Appropriate interventions to deliver vaccines to remote households should be ramped up.

The risks and benefits of bedaquiline (BDQ) for treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) have not been firmly established. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of BDQ-containing regimens for the treatment of DR-TB as evidenced in available randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, five databases (i.e., ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane CENTRAL, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SinoMed) were searched. RCTs among DR-TB patients that had a control arm were eligible. The safety endpoints were all-cause mortality and serious adverse effects (SAEs). Efficacy outcomes were sputum culture conversion rate at 8–12 weeks and 24–26 weeks, treatment success, and time to culture conversion. A total of 476 records were screened; 18 met the eligibility criteria. The pooled analysis included 2520 participants (55.8% received BDQ-containing regimens, n=1408). Pooled safety outcomes showed no significant reduction in all-cause mortality (relative risk [RR] 95%confidence interval CI=0.94 [0.41–2.20]) or SAEs (RR 95%CI=0.91 [0.67–1.23]) in the BDQ-regimen group. Pooled efficacy outcomes showed significantly superior culture conversion rates at 8–12 weeks (RR 95%CI=1.35 [1.10–1.65]) and 24–26 weeks (RR 95%CI=1.25 [1.15–1.36]), more treatment success (RR 95%CI=1.30 [1.17–1.44]), and a 17-day reduction in the time to culture conversion (standardized mean difference [SMD] 95%CI=−17.46 [−34.82 to −0.11]) in the BDQ-regimen group (reference: non-BDQ regimen). Overall, BDQ regimens showed significant treatment effect against DR-TB but did not reduce mortality or SAEs.

Smart lockers are automated delivery machines. They have been used in dispensing ARVs and Tuberculosis medication to chronically ill patients in South Africa, Kenya, and Eswatini. However, there is no evidence of smart lockers in dispensing chronic disease medication in Nigeria. This study aimed to assess the acceptability of smart lockers in dispensing chronic disease medication and to describe the barriers to accessing care among patients with chronic diseases medication in 5 states in Nigeria. We conducted a cross-sectional study among healthcare workers and patients living with chronic diseases in five Nigerian states of Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, and Niger between November and December 2021. A total of 1,133 participants were recruited (728 patients and 405 healthcare workers). The results revealed that most patients and healthcare workers agreed that using smart lockers for drug dispensing will lead to reduced transportation costs, hospital waiting times, the workload of healthcare workers, and decongestion of health facilities. The majority of the patients living with chronic diseases (43%) and healthcare workers (51%) showed high acceptability for the use of smart lockers. The use of smart lockers in dispensing chronic disease medication in Nigeria is feasible, and patients and healthcare workers are willing to accept the smart lockers, provided that a patient-centred implementation strategy is developed.
