Abstract The impacts of Internet use on farming productivity in China have been extensively examined. However, existing studies focus on non-grain crops and often do not distinguish between Internet access and Internet use. This study investigates the effects of both Internet access and Internet use for farming purposes on farmers’ technical efficiency (TE) using data collected from 855 grain-farmers in Central China. The TE is evaluated following a stochastic frontier analysis approach. Endogenous switching regression models are used to address the potential endogeneity issue associated with Internet access or use. Our empirical results show that the use of the Internet for obtaining farming-related information is crucial for improving farmers’ TE. Having access to the Internet itself does not necessarily improve TE. This is also true when considering the effects through the two channels of technology adoption and risk management. Furthermore, using the Internet for non-farming purposes could impede the improvement of TE. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the Internet can help to reduce the discrepancy of TE among grain farmers.

The ecological network construction and optimization are of great significance in ensuring regional ecological security and optimizing the ecological space of the national territory, therefore constructing the ecological spatial network and proposing optimization countermeasures are conducive to enhancing regional ecological stability. However, current research on ecological networks ignores the ecospatial community structure and the topology characteristics of ecological networks, and lacks a systematic optimization framework. The research scope of the ecological network primarily concentrates on urban administrative units, with less emphasis on the geographic scale of watersheds. This approach is not conducive to the comprehensive management of all elements of ecosystems. Therefore, this research took Erhai Lake Basin as an object, adopted Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis (MSPA) and landscape connectivity to extract ecological sources, simulate corridors and identify the weak points through the model of Minimum Cumulative Resistance (MCR) and gravity model, constructed the ecological network of Erhai Lake Basin, topologized the ecological network by using the Gephi platform. Based on the results of the analysis of complex network indicators, the optimization strategy of increasing edges was proposed. Priority conservation areas were further identified, an ecological security pattern was designed, and an ecological restoration strategy was planned. Results show that 28 ecological sources, 378 potential ecological corridors, 48 important ecological corridors and 86 ecological weak points formed the complex ecological network in Erhai Lake Basin. The network had clear clustering characteristics and instability, with a high degree concentration in the northeast and uneven betweenness centrality, especially higher in the east. Through topology analysis, 12 increased edge nodes were identified, 9 increased edges were simulated, and 26 weak points were added, significantly improving the network robustness. Based on the ecological security pattern, the restoration strategy with strict control around the lake, conservation of barrier belts and management of priority areas were designed. This study implemented increased edge optimization based on complex network analysis to enhance the stability of the network, which provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of the spatial pattern of Erhai Lake Basin, and is a useful exploration of the ecologically fragile watersheds to protect the environment and achieve high-quality sustainable development.

Abstract Background Nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy(NSRH)has the advantage of reducing postoperative complications and improving postoperative quality of life. The separation and protection of the pelvic plexus in NSRH is extremely important and challenging. Methods 24 female cadaveric hemipelves were dissected. Morphologic patterns and compositions of pelvic plexus as well as relationship of pelvic plexus to the surrounding structures were observed and documented. Results Two patterns of superior hypogastric plexus were observed, including fenestrated and cord-like shape. The origin of bilateral hypogastric nerves were inferiorly to upper margin of promontory about 1.6 ± 0.1 cm and parallel to the ureter in front of the sacrum. Pelvic splanchnic nerves(PSN)from the second sacral nerve, the third sacral nerve and the forth sacral nerve were observed combing with the hypogastric nerves within the lateral rectal ligament. The sacral sympathetic trunk can be identified anteriorly or medially to the anterior sacral foramen. We identified the boundaries of pelvic plexus as following: the upper margin is formed by the PSNs from the third sacral nerve, posterior margin by inferior rectal artery, and anteriorly by vesical venous plexus. The uterine branches from pelvic plexus were observed accompanying with uterine artery, while other branches were inferiorly to the artery. The PSNs were located beneath the deep uterine veins within the cardinal ligament. The upper margin of pelvic plexus was observed directly approach to urinary bladder within the vesico-vaginal ligament as a single trunk accompanying with ureter, between the middle and inferior vesical veins. Conclusions Our study clarified the intricate arrangement, distribution and relationship of female pelvic plexus and the related structures to provide reference index for NSRH application. The innervation patterns of bladder and uterine were clarified, and by tracing these visceral branches of pelvic plexus, we suggest several new important land markers for NSRH.

IntroductionWith the introduction of the concept of mesopancreas defining the perineural structures that includes neurovascular bundle and lymph nodes extending from the posterior surface of the pancreatic head to behind the mesenteric vessels,Total Mesopancreas Excision (TMpE) based on this theory has facilitated the development of pancreatic cancer surgery in clinical practice in recent years. However, the existence of so called mesopancreas in the human body is still in debate and the comparative study of mesopancreas of rhesus monkey and human have not been well investigated.PurposeThe aim of our study is to compare the pancreatic vessels and fascia of human and rhesus monkeys in anatomical and embryological perspectives and to support the utilization of rhesus monkey as animal model.MethodsIn this study, 20 rhesus monkey cadavers were dissected and their mesopancreas location, relationships and arterial distribution were analyzed. We compared the location and developmental patterns of mesopancreas in macaques and humans.ResultsThe results showed that the distribution of pancreatic arteries in rhesus monkeys was the same as that in humans, which is consistent with phylogenetic similarities. However, the morphological features of the mesopancreas and greater omentum is anatomically different from that of humans, including (1) the greater omentum is not connected to the transverse colon in monkeys. (2) The presence of the dorsal mesopancreas of the rhesus monkey suggests that it be an intraperitoneal organ. Comparative anatomical studies of mesopancreas and arteries in macaques and humans showed characteristic patterns of mesopancreas and similarities in pancreatic artery development in nonhuman primates, consistent with phylogenetic differentiation.

Large input and high loss of chemical fertilizer are the major causes of agricultural non-point source pollution in China. Employing fertilizer loss and micro-health data, this paper analyzes the effects of chemical fertilizer loss on the health of rural elderly and the medical cost in China. Results of the difference-in-differences (DID) method indicate that one kg/ha increase in fertilizer loss alters a key medical disability index (Activities of Daily Living) by 0.0147 (0.2 percent changes) and the number of diseases by 0.0057 for rural residents of 65 and older. This is equivalent to CNY 316 million (USD 45 million) at national medical cost. Furthermore, the age of onset is younger in regions with higher fertilizer loss. One kg/ha increase of fertilizer loss advances the age of onset by 0.267 year, which will cause long-term effect on public health. Our results are robust to a variety of robustness checks.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics and distribution patterns of clinically metastatic nodes assessed by Computed Tomography (CT) in preoperative cervical cancer patients, to address the importance of obturator and/or inguinal lymph nodes as sentinel lymph nodes. Methods: A total of 217 patients with cervical carcinoma treated by lymph node dissection (LND) between 2009 and 2014 were included. All preoperative CT/MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) imaging data of these patients were reviewed. The relationship of patient characteristics age, tumor stages, and corresponding lymph node metastasis status were analyzed. We put emphasis on the distribution pattern of positive lymph nodes from pre-operative imaging and compared the different frequencies of each regional and non-regional lymph node group respectively. The data of the 5-year survival rate from follow-up was taken into consideration too. SPSS 24.0 (IBM Corp., Chicago, IL, USA) was used for statistical analysis. Results: The overall lymph node metastasis (LNM) rate was 92.6% in 217 cases. When regional nodes were involved, obturator groups were concerned in 154 (76.6%). The inguinal group was involved in 146 (72.6%) in the area of non-regional lymph node. The 5-year survival rates of return visits were 92.6% and 82.1% in stage IB and IIA, respectively. Age distribution was not associated with the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage as well as the incidence and patterns of nodal metastasis. Conclusions: obturator and inguinal groups play a decisive role in the metastases process of cervical cancer, and can be regarded as a candidate for sentinel lymph nodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) by Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) alkylation plays a central role in anti-inflammatory therapy. However, activators of Nrf2 through alkylation of Keap1-Kelch domain have not been identified. Deoxynyboquinone (DNQ) is a natural small molecule discovered from marine actinomycetes. The current study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects and molecular mechanisms of DNQ via alkylation of Keap1. DNQ exhibited significant anti-inflammatory properties both in vitro and in vivo. The pharmacophore responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties of DNQ was determined to be the α, β-unsaturated amides moieties by a chemical reaction between DNQ and N-acetylcysteine. DNQ exerted anti-inflammatory effects through activation of Nrf2/ARE pathway. Keap1 was demonstrated to be the direct target of DNQ and bound with DNQ through conjugate addition reaction involving alkylation. The specific alkylation site of DNQ on Keap1 for Nrf2 activation was elucidated with a synthesized probe in conjunction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. DNQ triggered the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of Keap1 by alkylation of the cysteine residue 489 (Cys489) on Keap1-Kelch domain, ultimately enabling the activation of Nrf2. Our findings revealed that DNQ exhibited potent anti-inflammatory capacity through α, β-unsaturated amides moieties active group which specifically activated Nrf2 signal pathway via alkylation/ubiquitination of Keap1-Kelch domain, suggesting the potential values of targeting Cys489 on Keap1-Kelch domain by DNQ-like small molecules in inflammatory therapies.

Abstract Background Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a common inflammatory intestinal disease. Astragali Radix (AR) is one of the traditional Chinese medicines used in clinic for UC treatment. In our previous study, the whole ingredient extract (WIE) from AR have been proved to possess better immunomodulatory effects on immunosuppressed mice compared with the conventional water extraction (WAE). In the present study, we further evaluated the therapeutic effects of WIE against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC in mice through systemic immune regulation. Methods Gradient solvent extraction has been used to prepare the WIE of AR. The HPLC–MS analysis approach has been employed to analyze and compare the chemical differences between WAE and WIE. UC model was reproduced in 3% DSS-induced C57BL/6 mice for 6 days. Flow cytometric analysis for splenic lymphocyte subset. ELISA kits were used to determine the cytokines in the serum and colon tissues. The histopathological characteristics of colon were evaluated by hematoxylin–eosin staining and immunohistochemistry. Results The chemical compositions and the contents of main active ingredients were more abundant and higher in WIE than those in WAE. The WIE treatment altered a better action on reducing colitis disease activity index (DAI) and histological scores, as well as the recovered body weight and increased colon length in mice compared to the WAE group. Additionally, WIE showed better effects in recovering the levels of peripheral white blood cells in blood and cytokines (IL-2, IL-6 and MCP-1) in serum or colon tissues, improving the percentage of CD3+ and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in the spleen, and inhibiting the spleen enlargement in DSS-induced UC mice. Conclusions WIE has a more complete chemical composition than WAE. Meanwhile, WIE possesses better therapeutic effects on UC through resuming dysfunctional immunity in mice.
