The chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrum of 2′-aminoacetophenone, an aromatic chemical species with odorant properties, has been recorded in the 2–8 GHz frequency range and analyzed, obtaining precise information on the structure of the monomer and its neon and water complexes. The conformation of the monomer is determined by the formation of a resonance-assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) between the carbonyl and amino groups, which leads to the formation of a bicyclic-like aromatic structure. Accordingly, the cycle formed by the non-covalent bond is preferred to the phenyl ring as the interaction site for neon. In the 1:1 complex, water lies in the molecular plane and forms a strong hydrogen bond with the carbonyl group coupled to an ancillary interaction with the methyl group, leaving the intramolecular RAHB unchanged. The experimental findings are supported by atoms in molecules and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, which allowed for determining the hydrogen bond and intermolecular interaction energies, respectively. The most stable conformer of laser-ablated diflunisal has been isolated in a supersonic expansion and experimentally detected through high-resolution chirped-pulse rotational spectroscopy. State-of-the-art chemical calculations allowed to understand the nature of the strong stabilization of the detected conformer and its atropisomer among a total of sixteen theoretically predicted conformers and confirmed the presence of a resonance assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) between the hydroxyl hydrogen atom and the carbonyl oxygen atom of the carboxylic acid group. This study evaluated the influence of nanoparticles in both suspension and solid format on the performance of a microalgal process devoted to photosynthetic biogas purification. The experimental system consisted of an enclosed tubular photobioreactor coupled to a biogas absorption column through a mixing chamber. The high NH 4 + concentration in the inlet mineral medium (530 mg N-NH 4 + L -1 ) and the punctual addition of 115 mL of nanoparticle suspension to the system caused inhibition of the microalgal-bacterial cultivation. Conversely, cultivation broth aeration (0.5 L min -1 air flowrate) allowed the biomethane production fulfilling the EN 16723 (CH 4  > 90 %, CO 2  < 2 %). The nanoparticle suspension performance was superior to that of their solid counterparts in terms of CO 2 removal efficiency at equivalent nanoparticle dose (77 % vs. 49 %). The small GTPase R-RAS2 regulates homeostatic proliferation and survival of T and B lymphocytes and, when present in high amounts, drives the development of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In normal and leukemic lymphocytes, R-RAS2 constitutively binds to antigen receptors through their immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAMs) and promotes tonic activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway. Here, we examined the molecular mechanisms underlying this direct interaction and its consequences for R-RAS2 activity. R-RAS2 exhibited direct, high-affinity interactions with ITAM peptides derived from B and T cell receptors through a proline-rich sequence in the hypervariable domain of R-RAS2. In resting T and B cells, the presence of antigen receptors at the plasma membrane was sufficient to promote the activation of R-RAS2 and PI3K, and mutations that abolished the interaction of R-RAS2 with ITAMs reduced R-RAS2 signaling. Binding to ITAMs increased GDP-GTP exchange on R-RAS2 through a mechanism distinct from that by which conventional cytosolic guanosine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) activate RAS proteins. These results define antigen receptors as noncanonical GEFs involved in the basal activation state of R-RAS2 in lymphocytes. Such a mechanism may underlie the leukemic transformation of B cells that occurs when wild-type R-RAS2 is present in high amounts.

Breastfeeding is vital to a child's lifelong health and has significant positive benefits to mother's health. World Health Organization recommends beginning exclusively breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and continuing during the first 6 months of infant's life. The purpose of this review is to identify and examine breastfeeding interventions conducted across the Spanish-speaking countries. A scoping review of the literature was conducted across 14 databases for relevant publications published through April 2023 to find studies in Spanish-speaking countries that involved breastfeeding as an intervention component. A total of 46 peer-reviewed articles were included in this review, across 12 Spanish-speaking countries. Participants ranged from pregnant women, mothers, mother-infant pair, and health care professionals. Intervention at the individual level in combination with support from trained health care professionals or peer counselors seemed to have higher improvements in breastfeeding rates. The greatest improvement in exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months was seen in interventions that included prenatal and postnatal intensive lactation education, for a period of 12 months. The most effective interventions that improved rates of any breastfeeding included promotional activities, educations workshop, and training of health care staff along with changes in hospital care. Breastfeeding promotion is an economical and effective intervention to increase breastfeeding behavior and thereby improving breastfeeding adherence across Spanish-speaking countries.

Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative pathology, is characterized by the accumulation of Amyloid-β plaques in the brain. Lecanemab (BAN2401), a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody, binds with high affinity to Amyloid-β protofibrils. It is the first monoclonal antibody for Alzheimer's disease to receive full FDA approval. This systematic review, conducted meticulously, examines the current use and safety of Lecanemab in treating Alzheimer's disease. We screened literature from databases such as PubMed Central, PubMed (MedLine), ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Wolters Kluwer for randomized controlled trials testing Lecanemab for cognitive decline in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease. Outcomes measured included CDR-SB, ADCOMS, ADAS-Cog, and Amyloid burden on PET in centiloids. Likewise, reports were analyzed for adverse events associated with ARIA-A and ARIA-H. Five papers were included in the systematic review and three in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that Lecanemab slowed the progression of cognitive impairment as measured by CDR-SB, ADCOMS, and ADASCog, and significantly reduced Amyloid burden on PET in centiloids. However, Lecanemab was associated with an increased risk of ARIA-E and ARIA-H. Lecanemab has demonstrated efficacy in slowing cognitive impairment progression in Alzheimer's disease as measured by ADCOMS, ADAS-Cog, and CDR-SB. Background: The COVID-19 vaccination campaign in several European countries involved collaboration between public health and Primary Health Care (PHC)., Objective: To highlight the role of PHC professionals in the COVID-19 vaccination rollout, specifically in terms of vaccine administration, communication and contributing to vaccination population coverage., Methods: A descriptive retrospective study of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign across 28 European countries was conducted, covering data from December 2020 to November 2021. Data were collected by key informants recruited from each country, who were health professionals involved in their national vaccination campaigns. Utilising an ad-hoc semi-structured questionnaire, information was gathered on organisation, communication strategies, priority groups, vaccine types, and vaccination pathways in PHC., Results: PHC participated in communication strategies in 10 out of 28 countries, and vaccination was voluntary in most of them. The priority groups for vaccination varied across Europe, and the availability of vaccines in PHC differed between countries within the European Union (EU) and non-EU countries. The BioNTech Pfizer vaccine was the most widely available vaccine in most countries, followed by Moderna and AstraZeneca. PHC administered COVID-19 vaccines to the population, being the nurses the most involved, followed by general practitioners. Vaccination appointments were available online in 18/28 or by phone in 15/28, direct appointments at health centres were available in 8/28. In several countries, healthcare professionals who administered vaccines were given extra compensation for their role., Conclusion: PHC professionals played a crucial role in the successful distribution and administration of COVID-19 vaccines in European countries.

The biological relevance and dynamics of mRNA modifications have been extensively studied; however, whether rRNA modifications are dynamically regulated, and under which conditions, remains unclear. Here, we systematically characterize bacterial rRNA modifications upon exposure to diverse antibiotics using native RNA nanopore sequencing. To identify significant rRNA modification changes, we develop NanoConsensus, a novel pipeline that is robust across RNA modification types, stoichiometries and coverage, with very low false positive rates, outperforming all individual algorithms tested. We then apply NanoConsensus to characterize the rRNA modification landscape upon antibiotic exposure, finding that rRNA modification profiles are altered in the vicinity of A and P-sites of the ribosome, in an antibiotic-specific manner, possibly contributing to antibiotic resistance. Background: Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) re-emergence and its geographical expansion, evidenced by its emergence in previously unaffected areas, have raised significant public health concerns. We aimed to show the usefulness of haemovigilance as an effective tool to fill arboviruses surveillance gaps to track trends and identify hotspots., Methods: Within the framework of a blood bank haemovigilance program, we performed a survey to evaluate the potential threat of circulating mosquito-borne infections for transfusion safety. SLEV was detected by a PCR targeting the conserved NS5-gene region, and the PCR-product was subjected to direct nucleotide sequencing reaction., Results: The SLEV-strain detected in the blood donor (OR236721) clustered with previously reported CbaAr-4005, 79 V-2533, and MN413675 isolated in Córdoba (2005, epidemic), Santa Fe (1979, non-epidemic) and Buenos Aires (2013, non-epidemic), with 97% identity., Conclusions: Herein, we show the usefulness of haemovigilance in uncovering the silent circulation of arboviral infections. Implementing this systematic surveillance approach would allow for monitoring the distribution and incidence of vector-borne diseases, providing information that could prevent the spread of the virus and its introduction into novel biomes. The textile industry is one of the largest water consumers, and, as a result of its activity, it generates tons of wastewater. In this research, forward osmosis has been employed to tackle the critical need of treating textile wastewater. The HFFO2 membrane (Aquaporin) was used to process large volumes of real cotton dyeing wastewater, wool dyeing wastewater, and several types of textile end-of-pipe wastewater. In all cases, the permeate flux was between 6 and 8 L·h - 1  m - 2 during the major part of the process. The recovery of clean water from each wastewater surpassed 90 %, whereas the membrane rejected more than 87 % of total dissolved solids. As a result, textile dyes were concentrated on the feed side of the membrane, which enables their recovery and potential reutilization in a subsequent dying process, along with the reclaimed water. The HFFO2 membrane was efficiently cleaned by a backwash process, restoring the initial water flux. Gender is an important determinant of health. Its relationship with inequality and violence allows us to consider being a woman as a risk factor for health. Girls and teenager girls are not exempt from this circumstance, which conditions their lives from before birth and can determine their health status throughout life. It can vary according to social contexts, as various factors intersect with gender, adding risk and vulnerability to being a woman. Gender-based violence is often identified as a problem for adult women; however, the experience of discriminatory gender-based violence is constructed throughout women's lives, producing serious individual and social consequences from childhood. Wastewater represents an alternative source of nutrients in which to grow microalgae, whilst improving the quality of the wastewater, and reducing the downstream treatment required. However, commercialisation of microalgal cultures for such duties faces a number of challenges, predominantly high cost and low productivity. Suspended-solid reactors (ssPBR) can reduce the operational costs, while promoting attached and suspended microalgae growth. In the present study, a novel approach was developed by integrating microalgal wastewater treatment with carrier systems to favour the growth of both attached and suspended cells of T. obliquus. This study found that T. obliquus was able to uptake nutrients from municipal wastewater, achieving removals of 99.3-99.9 % NH 3 -N, 54.5-88.5 % PO 4 3- and 92.8-94.5 % DTC. The addition of a 12.5 % volumetric fill ratio of carriers in ssPBRs produced higher microalgal cell productivity (1.2·10 6  ± 2.5·10 5  cell ml -1 d -1 ) than the control (4.3·10 5  ± 2.8·10 5  cell ml -1 d -1 ). MinION nanopore sequencing was conducted to assess the impact of microalgal and carrier treatment on wastewater bacterial communities. It was found not only that bacterial communities had changed after the treatment but also the ones attached differed from the ones suspended. Untreated wastewater was characterised by the abundance of sewer bacteria genera such as Aliarcobacter and Arcobacter, whilst, after treatment, microbial communities were characterised by the presence of photosynthetic freshwater (Limnococcus, Stanieria) and bioremediation-like bacteria genera (Pseudomonas, Rheinheimera). Background: This article aims to examine patient safety in general practice during COVID-19., Methods: In total, 5489 GP practices from 37 European countries and Israel filled in the online self-reported PRICOV-19 survey between November 2020 and December 2021. The outcome measures include 30 patient safety indicators on structure, process, and outcome., Results: The data showed that structural problems often impeded patient safety during COVID-19, as 58.6% of practices (3209/5479) reported limitations related to their building or infrastructure. Nevertheless, GP practices rapidly changed their processes, including the appointment systems. Implementation proved challenging as, although 76.1% of practices (3751/4932) developed a protocol to answer calls from potential COVID patients, only 34.4% (1252/3643) always used it. The proportion of practices reported having sufficient protected time in general practitioners' schedules to review guidelines remained consistent when comparing the pre-COVID (34.2%,1647/4813) with the COVID period (33.2%,1600/4813). Overall, 42.8% of practices (1966/4590) always informed home care services when patients were diagnosed with COVID-19, while this decreased to 30.1% for other major infectious diseases (1341/4458). Most practices reported at least one incident of delayed care in patients with an urgent condition, most often because the patient did not come to the practice sooner (60.4%, 2561/4237). Moreover, 31.1% of practices (1349/4199) always organized a team discussion when incidents happened. Overall, large variations were found across countries and patient safety indicators., Conclusions: The results demonstrated that European GP practices adopted numerous measures to deliver safe care during COVID-19. Low-stress stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) waveguides with an unprecedented thickness of up to 1350 nm and a width in the range of 2.2 - 2.7 µm are fabricated using a single LPCVD step on sapphire substrates (SiNOS). Optical characterization of proof-of-concept ∼1.35 µm thick waveguides show propagation losses in the order of 0.30 ± 0.01 dB/cm at 1600 nm. The proposed process offers a simple route to high confinement Si 3 N 4 waveguides, enabling applications in nonlinear and mid-IR integrated photonics.

Background: Multiple studies have linked COVID-19 to a higher incidence of thromboembolic disorders. However, the association of COVID-19 with other potentially life-threatening complications, such as splanchnic vein thrombosis, is less well understood. This study aims to assess the prevalence, patient characteristics, clinical presentation, and outcomes of patients with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) and COVID-19. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. From all positive patients for a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) swab test from March 2020 to June 2020, we included those who were older than 18 years, had received abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) in the 6 months following the positive RT-PCR swab, and had no previously known splanchnic vein thrombosis. Results: A total of 60 patients with abdominal CT were selected from all those positive for SARS-CoV-2 ( n = 2987). The prevalence of PVT was 3/60 (5%). The mean age was 66.1 ± 16.5 years and 51.7% were male. In two of the three patients, there was no underlying pathology as a risk factor for PVT and one of them presented cirrhosis. The number of days from the start of COVID-19 symptoms until the PVT diagnosis were 21, 12, and 10 days. Anticoagulation treatment achieved recanalization in 100% of cases. During a mean follow-up of 803 days, none of the patients experienced long-term complications. Conclusions: Portal vein thrombosis is uncommon, and its incidence may be higher in COVID-19 patients. A greater understanding of the features of this disease in the context of COVID-19 could aid towards its diagnosis and allow for early detection and management.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome of unknown etiology, although many studies point to inflammation, oxidative stress, and altered mitochondrial metabolism as some of the cornerstones of this disease. Despite its socioeconomic importance and due to the difficulties in diagnosis, there are no effective treatments. However, the use of non-drug treatments is increasingly becoming a recommended strategy. In this context, the effects of supplementation of FM patients with an olive (poly)phenol, vitamin C, and vitamin B preparation were investigated in this work, analyzing complete blood count, biochemical, lipid, and coagulation profiles, and inflammation and oxidation status in blood samples. To gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms and pathways involved in the etiology of FM, a proteomic study was also performed to investigate the mechanisms of action of the supplement. Our results show that the nutraceutical lowers the lipid profile, namely cholesterol, and improves the oxidative status of patients as well as their quality of life, suggesting that this product could be beneficial in the co-treatment of FM. Parents of newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can face communication challenges in the neonatal intensive care unit. Both specialty palliative care and primary palliative care trained clinicians can assist parents as they navigate traumatic experiences and uncertain prognoses. Using evidence-based frameworks, the authors provide samples of how to communicate with parents and promote parent well-being across the care trajectory. The authors demonstrate how to involve parents in a shared decision-making process and give special consideration to the complexities of hospital discharge and the transition home. Background and Aims: Spontaneous ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma is an uncommon complication, and there are scarce data about non-cirrhotic patients. Tumor treatment is not standardized and the risk of peritoneal dissemination is unclear., Aim: we analyzed the treatment and survival in patients with rHCC on non-cirrhotic liver., Methods: One hundred and forty-one non-cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed by histology were included in a multicenter prospective registry (2018-2022). Seven of them (5%) presented with hemoperitoneum due to spontaneous rupture., Results: Liver disease was associated in three patients (42.9%). A single nodule was detected in three cases (42.9%). One patient had vascular invasion and none extrahepatic spread. Initial hemostatic therapy and sequential treatment was individualized. Patients with single nodule were treated: resection (one case) with recurrence at 4 months treated with TACE and sorafenib. TACE/TAE followed by surgery (two cases) one in remission 43 months later, the other had liver recurrence at 18 months and was transplanted. Patients with multiple lesions were treated: TAE/emergency surgery and subsequent systemic therapy (two cases), one received lenvatinib (1-year survival) and the other sorafenib (5-month survival). TAE and surgery with subsequent systemic therapy (one case). Initial hemostatic surgery, dying on admission (one case). No patient developed intraperitoneal metastasis. All patients with multiple lesions died by tumor. The 3-year survival rate was 42.9%., Conclusions: Initial hemostasis was achieved in all patients by TAE/TACE or surgery. Subsequent treatment was individualized, based on tumor characteristics, regardless of rupture.
