1. The Impact of Building Level of Detail Modelling Strategies: Insights into Building and Urban Energy Modelling

Abstract

Level of detail (LoD) is an important factor in urban building energy modelling (UBEM), affecting functionality and accuracy. This work assesses the impacts of the LoD of the roof, window, and zoning on a comprehensive range of outcomes (annual heating load, peak heating demand, overheating, and time-series heating error) in a representative New Zealand house. Lower-LoD roof scenarios produce mean absolute error results ranging from 1.5% for peak heating power to 99% for overheating. Windows and shading both affect solar gains, so lower-LoD windows and/or shading elements can considerably reduce model accuracy. The LoD of internal zoning has the greatest effect on time-series accuracy, producing mean absolute heating error of up to 66 W. These results indicate that low-LoD “shoebox” models, common in UBEM, can produce significant errors which aggregate at scale. Accurate internal zoning models and accurate window size and placement have the greatest potential for error reduction, but their implementation is limited at scale due to data availability and automation barriers. Conversely, modest error reductions can be obtained via simple model improvements, such as the inclusion of eaves and window border shading. Overall, modellers should select LoD elements according to specific accuracy requirements.

Abstract

Semiconductor excitations can hybridize with cavity photons to form exciton-polaritons (EPs) with remarkable properties, including light-like energy flow combined with matter-like interactions. To fully harness these properties, EPs must retain ballistic, coherent transport despite matter-mediated interactions with lattice phonons. Here we develop a nonlinear momentum-resolved optical approach that directly images EPs in real space on femtosecond scales in a range of polaritonic architectures. We focus our analysis on EP propagation in layered halide perovskite microcavities. We reveal that EP-phonon interactions lead to a large renormalization of EP velocities at high excitonic fractions at room temperature. Despite these strong EP-phonon interactions, ballistic transport is maintained for up to half-exciton EPs, in agreement with quantum simulations of dynamic disorder shielding through light-matter hybridization. Above 50% excitonic character, rapid decoherence leads to diffusive transport. Our work provides a general framework to precisely balance EP coherence, velocity, and nonlinear interactions.

Abstract

● An expert survey highlighted the most effective strategies for GHG and ammonia mitigation. ● Interventions considered to have the highest mitigation potential are discussed. ● Experts agreed that no single mitigation measure can uniquely deliver GHG and ammonia mitigation. ● Experts noted a need for further investment in research, knowledge exchange, education and to develop implementation pathways. ● There is a need for more data to better quantify mitigation potentials and implement effective management strategies. Agriculture is essential for providing food and maintaining food security while concurrently delivering multiple other ecosystem services. However, agricultural systems are generally a net source of greenhouse gases and ammonia. They, therefore, need to substantively contribute to climate change mitigation and net zero ambitions. It is widely acknowledged that there is a need to further reduce and mitigate emissions across sectors, including agriculture to address the climate emergency and emissions gap. This discussion paper outlines a collation of opinions from a range of experts within agricultural research and advisory roles following a greenhouse gas and ammonia emission mitigation workshop held in the UK in March 2022. The meeting identified the top mitigation priorities within the UK’s agricultural sector to achieve reductions in greenhouse gases and ammonia that are compatible with policy targets. In addition, experts provided an overview of what they believe are the key knowledge gaps, future opportunities and co-benefits to mitigation practices as well as indicating the potential barriers to uptake for mitigation scenarios discussed.

9. Identification and Referral for Early Intervention Services in New Zealand: A Look at Teachers' Perspectives -- Past and Present

Abstract

Inclusive experiences for all children are foundational to New Zealand early childhood education, yet teacher beliefs and practices related to identification and referral processes may be delaying access to important early intervention support for children with disabilities. To better understand teachers' perspectives, past and present, this article details the findings from two studies conducted 14 years apart. Through comparison of findings from the work of Aspden and Baxter, this article explores teachers' beliefs and experiences related to identification and referral practices. In the original 2003 study, 50 early childhood teachers completed a paper-based postal survey, whereas in the 2017 replication, 78 early childhood teachers completed an online survey. Persistent concerns about teacher engagement with identification and referral processes were evident both past and present, particularly in relation to perceived parental reaction and beliefs about the adequacy of service provisions. Furthermore, the data revealed tensions between embracing a strengths-based approach and the need to identify children's disabilities. The findings provide insight into referral practices in the New Zealand early childhood context and suggest the need for ongoing teacher consultation in relation to policy and practice, the development of more formal referral policies and procedures, as well as enhanced professional support and development that targets teachers' need for knowledge of and connection with specialist agencies.

10. Are You a Werewolf? Teaching Symbolic Interaction Theory through Game Play

Abstract

In this article, we report on the implementation of using the game Werewolf as a student-centered applied-learning activity to teach symbolic interaction theory and concepts. Engaging with symbolic interaction theory can be a powerful experience for students due to its potential to challenge taken-for-granted assumptions and analyze students' everyday life experiences. However, some students may have difficulty grasping the specific details and overall significance underlying the perspective. Moreover, research has shown that undergraduate students often have significant levels of anxiety when confronted with sociological theory in both introductory and upper division theory courses. We aim to address recommendations to incorporate more active learning approaches to social theory by outlining an applied-learning activity based on the role-playing game Werewolf. In the article, we review Werewolf and provide a step-by-step guide on how to implement the activity in the classroom and summarize findings from student assessments and classroom evaluations.

Abstract

Level of detail (LoD) is an important factor in urban building energy modelling (UBEM), affecting functionality and accuracy. This work assesses the impacts of the LoD of the roof, window, and zoning on a comprehensive range of outcomes (annual heating load, peak heating demand, overheating, and time-series heating error) in a representative New Zealand house. Lower-LoD roof scenarios produce mean absolute error results ranging from 1.5% for peak heating power to 99% for overheating. Windows and shading both affect solar gains, so lower-LoD windows and/or shading elements can considerably reduce model accuracy. The LoD of internal zoning has the greatest effect on time-series accuracy, producing mean absolute heating error of up to 66 W. These results indicate that low-LoD "shoebox" models, common in UBEM, can produce significant errors which aggregate at scale. Accurate internal zoning models and accurate window size and placement have the greatest potential for error reduction, but their implementation is limited at scale due to data availability and automation barriers. Conversely, modest error reductions can be obtained via simple model improvements, such as the inclusion of eaves and window border shading. Abstract

This chapter describes the development and nature of public and consumer concerns about pig welfare and the various initiatives by which people try to improve pig welfare. First, the origins of the modern idea of animal welfare are traced. The chapter then looks at the use of national and international law to raise farm animal welfare standards. After this, various market-driven initiatives to move welfare above the legally required minimum are described. Using the so-called ‘Benchmark method’ the relative importance of legislation and market-driven initiatives for enhancing animal welfare is assessed. Finally, the ways in which consumers in different parts of the world perceive pig welfare and how much they are willing to pay for it are then reviewed.

Daily nursing skin assessments were documented in the electronic health record before, during and after external catheter device application. Methods and results were reported following SQUIRE guidelines.Three hundred and eighty‐one patients from 57 inpatient care units were included in the analysis. Both catheter devices were associated with an overall low risk (5 %) of new or worsening skin breakdown.The overall benefit of external catheters is most persuasive for skin integrity, rather than infection prevention.Significant negative outcomes are associated with UI patients. External female urinary catheters are a non‐invasive alternative strategy to reduce exposure of regional skin to urine contamination and IAD‐related skin complications. Use of external female urinary catheters in hospitalized UI female patients offers low risk (5%) of new or worsening overall skin breakdown.Hospitalized UI female patients were screened for external catheter device eligibility by the bedside nurse. 26. Factors contributing to high performance of sows in free farrowing systems.

Abstract

Background: Pressure to abolish farrowing crates is increasing, and producers are faced with decisions about which alternative system to adopt. For sow welfare, well designed free farrowing systems without close confinement are considered optimal but producers have concerns about increased piglet mortality, particularly crushing by the sow. Reporting accurate performance figures from commercial farms newly operating such systems could inform the transition process. This study investigated performance on three commercial farms operating four different zero-confinement systems, three of which were newly installed. A total of 3212 litters from 2920 sows were followed from farrowing to weaning over a three-year period with key performance indicators (KPIs) recorded. Mixed Models (LMMs, GLMMs) determined the influence of different factors (e.g. farrowing system, sow parity, management aspects) and litter characteristics on performance, including levels and causes of piglet mortality. Results: Piglet mortality was significantly influenced by farm/system. Live-born mortality ranged from 10.3 to 20.6% with stillbirths ranging from 2.5 to 5.9%. A larger litter size and higher parity resulted in higher levels of mortality regardless of system. In all systems, crushing was the main cause of piglet mortality (59%), but 31% of sows did not crush any piglets, whilst 26% crushed only one piglet and the remaining sows (43%) crushed two or more piglets. System significantly influenced crushing as a percentage of all deaths, with the system with the smallest spatial footprint (m2) compared to the other systems, recording the highest levels of crushing. Time from the start of the study influenced mortality, with significant reductions in crushing mortality (by ~ 4%) over the course of the three-year study. There was a highly significant effect of length of time (days) between moving sows into the farrowing accommodation and sows farrowing on piglet mortality (P < 0.001). The less time between sows moving in and farrowing, the higher the levels of piglet mortality, with ~ 3% increase in total mortality every five days. System effects were highly significant after adjusting for parity, litter size, and days pre-farrowing. Conclusion: These results from commercial farms demonstrate that even sows that have not been specifically selected for free farrowing are able, in many cases, to perform well in these zero-confinement systems, but that a period of adaptation is to be expected for overall farm performance. There are performance differences between the farms/systems which can be attributed to individual farm/system characteristics (e.g. pen design and management, staff expertise, pig genotypes, etc.). Higher parity sows and those producing very large litters provide a greater challenge to piglet mortality in these free farrowing systems (just as they do in crate systems). Management significantly influences performance, and ensuring sows have plenty of time to acclimatise between moving in to farrowing accommodation and giving birth is a critical aspect of improving piglet survival. Abstract

Historically, considerations of the carbon budget of bivalve shellfish have disproportionately focused on the cycling of carbon in shell alone, overlooking respiratory release and the potential role of bivalve shellfish habitats in the stabilization of sediment, and therefore of carbon.Data on carbon cycling are key to providing essential evidence to inform evaluation of management strategies and the business case for restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) habitats. The purpose of this study was to examine the flat oyster carbon budget at the scale of the individual and to set out a framework to enable future comparisons of carbon budgets between ecosystems.Through the combination of previously established work with measurements of calcification and respiration both in situ and ex situ, a carbon budget at the scale of a single oyster was determined.In consideration of the flat oyster carbon budget, the inclusion of the deposition of sedimentary carbon, as well as carbon stored in shell, balanced with the release of carbon through respiration and calcification suggests that these habitats are unlikely to be significant carbon sinks in the context of global climate change mitigation. However, the recovery of flat oyster beds is likely to facilitate the accretion of substantial carbon stocks that are nevertheless important in conservation management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background There is little information on cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in children. We studied adaptive and innate CMI in vaccinated children aged 6 to 60 months. Methods Blood obtained from participants in a randomized placebo-controlled trial of an mRNA vaccine before and 1 month after the first dose was used for antibody measurements and CMI (flow cytometry). Results We enrolled 29 children with a mean age of 28.5 months (SD, 15.7). Antibody studies revealed that 10 participants were infected with SARS-CoV-2 prevaccination. Ex vivo stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with SARS-CoV-2 spike peptides showed significant increases pre- to postimmunization of activated conventional CD4+ and γδ T cells, natural killer cells, monocytes, and conventional dendritic cells but not mucosa-associated innate T cells. Conventional T-cell, monocyte, and conventional dendritic cell responses in children were higher immediately after vaccination than after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The fold increase in CMI pre- to postvaccination did not differ between children previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and those uninfected. Conclusions Children aged 6 to 60 months who were vaccinated with a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine developed robust CMI responses, including adaptive and innate immunity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: This study evaluates the 24-month follow-up for the NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) Inositol for Retinopathy Trial. Study design: Bayley Scales of Infants Development-III and a standardized neurosensory examination were performed in infants enrolled in the main trial. Moderate/severe NDI was defined as BSID-III Cognitive or Motor composite score &lt;85, moderate or severe cerebral palsy, blindness, or hearing loss that prevents communication despite amplification were assessed. Results: Primary outcome was determined for 605/638 (95%). The mean gestational age was 25.8 ± 1.3 weeks and mean birthweight was 805 ± 192 g. Treatment group did not affect the risk for the composite outcome of death or survival with moderate/severe NDI (60% vs 56%, p= 0.40). Conclusions: Treatment group did not affect the risk of death or survival with moderate/severe NDI. Despite early termination, this study represents the largest RCT of extremely preterm infants treated with myo-inositol with neurodevelopmental outcome data.

Abstract

Theoretical analyses indicate that aggressive signals should positively correlate with the signallers' willingness and abilities to fight. Few experimental studies, however, have tested this prediction. In two experiments employing distinct, ecologically realistic protocols, we quantified the association between aggressive signals and fighting in fruit fly genotypes and found high positive genetic correlations between threat and fighting (rG = 0.80 and 0.74). Our results add to the growing body of experimental work indicating that aggressive signals have relatively high informational value.
