Water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol (WSOA and WIOA) constitute a large fraction of fine particles in winter in northern China, yet our understanding of their sources and processes are still limited. Here we have a comprehensive characterization of WSOA in cold season in Beijing. Particularly, we present the first mass spectral characterization of WIOA by integrating online and offline organic aerosol measurements from high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer. Our results showed that WSOA on average accounted for 59 % of the total OA and comprised dominantly secondary OA (SOA, 69 %). The WSOA composition showed significant changes during the transition season from autumn to winter. While the photochemical-related SOA dominated WSOA (51 %) in early November, the oxidized SOA from biomass burning increased substantially from 8 % to 29 % during the heating season. Comparatively, local primary OA dominantly from cooking aerosol contributed the major fraction of WSOA during clean periods. WIOA showed largely different spectral patterns from WSOA which were characterized by prominent hydrocarbon ions series and low oxygen-to-carbon (O/C = 0.19) and organic mass-to-organic carbon (OM/OC = 1.39) ratios. The nighttime WIOA showed less oxidized properties (O/C = 0.16 vs. 0.24) with more pronounced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) signals than daytime, indicating the impacts of enhanced coal combustion emissions on WIOA. The evolution process of WSOA and WIOA was further demonstrated by the triangle plot of f44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) vs. f43, f44 vs. f60, and the Van Krevelen diagram (H/C vs. O/C). We also found more oxidized WSOA and an increased contribution of SOA in WSOA compared with previous winter studies in Beijing, indicating that the changes in OA composition due to clean air act have affected the sources and properties of WSOA.

Abstract Background Primary dental care settings are strategically important locations where randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of behaviour change interventions (BCIs) can be tested to tackle oral diseases. Findings have so far produced equivocal results. Improving treatment fidelity is posed as a mechanism to improve scientific rigour, consistency and implementation of BCIs. The National Institutes of Health Behaviour Change Consortium (NIH BCC) developed a tool to assess and evaluate treatment fidelity in health behaviour change interventions, which has yet to be applied to the primary dental care BCI literature. Method We conducted a scoping review of RCTs delivered in primary dental care by dental team members (in real-world settings) between 1980 and 2023. Eligible studies were coded using the NIH BCC checklist to determine the presence of reported fidelity strategies across domains: design, training, delivery, receipt and enactment. Results We included 34 eligible articles, reporting 21 RCTs. Fidelity reporting variations were found both between and within NIH BCC domains: strategy reporting ranged from 9.5 to 85.7% in design, 9.5 to 57.1% in training, 0 to 66.7% in delivery, 14.3 to 36.8% in receipt and 13.3 to 33.3% in enactment. The most reported domain was design (M = 0.45), and the least reported domain was delivery (M = 0.21). Only one study reported over 50% of the recommended strategies in every domain. Conclusions This review revealed inconsistencies in fidelity reporting with no evidence that fidelity guidelines or frameworks were being used within primary dental care trials. This has highlighted issues with interpretability, reliability and reproducibility of research findings. Recommendations are proposed to assist primary dental care trialists with embedding fidelity strategies into future research.

In this short intervention addressing the impact of crises on geographical knowledge practices, we, members of GenUrb (a multi-sited, longitudinal, partnered urban research project), ask, “what counts as crisis?”, sketching out epistemological and methodological points about our project's engagement with this call. We query the adeptness of dominant Eurocentric epistemologies in addressing crises, adopting the work of Bedour Alagraa, who places crises firmly within a historical–geographical colonial framing that conceptualizes crises not through rupture but through continuation. We illustrate the utility of this epistemological framing of crisis, honing in on the everyday violence that women continually experience, with our research in the cities of Cochabamba, Delhi, Georgetown, Ibadan, Ramallah, and Shanghai, showing that one in every two women participants had experienced intimate partner violence. We further ask what crises mean for the methodologies we adopt, specifically concerning questions of the co-production of knowledge and methods.

Summary: Background: People with diabetes are at increased risk of hospitalisation, morbidity, and mortality following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Long-term outcomes for people with diabetes previously hospitalised with COVID-19 are, however, unknown. This study aimed to determine the longer-term physical and mental health effects of COVID-19 in people with and without diabetes. Methods: The PHOSP-COVID study is a multicentre, long-term follow-up study of adults discharged from hospital between 1 February 2020 and 31 March 2021 in the UK following COVID-19, involving detailed assessment at 5 and 12 months after discharge. The association between diabetes status and outcomes were explored using multivariable linear and logistic regressions. Findings: People with diabetes who survived hospital admission with COVID-19 display worse physical outcomes compared to those without diabetes at 5- and 12-month follow-up. People with diabetes displayed higher fatigue (only at 5 months), frailty, lower physical performance, and health-related quality of life and poorer cognitive function. Differences in outcomes between diabetes status groups were largely consistent from 5 to 12-months. In regression models, differences at 5 and 12 months were attenuated after adjustment for BMI and presence of other long-term conditions. Interpretation: People with diabetes reported worse physical outcomes up to 12 months after hospital discharge with COVID-19 compared to those without diabetes. These data support the need to reduce inequalities in long-term physical and mental health effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in people with diabetes. Background The long-term outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalisation in individuals with pre-existing airway diseases are unknown. Methods Adult participants hospitalised for confirmed or clinically suspected COVID-19 and discharged between 5 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 were recruited to the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 (PHOSP-COVID) study. Participants attended research visits at 5 months and 1 year post discharge. Clinical characteristics, perceived recovery, burden of symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with pre-existing airway disease (i.e., asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis) were compared to the non-airways group. Results A total of 615 out of 2697 (22.8%) participants had a history of pre-existing airway diseases (72.0% diagnosed with asthma, 22.9% COPD and 5.1% bronchiectasis). Burkina Faso relies on its substantial bovine population for meat and milk production, ensuring food security. The country hosts three primary taurine cattle populations: Lobi, Gourounsi Nahouri, and Gourounsi Ténado. These cattle are adapted to local conditions and exhibit valuable trypan tolerant traits, playing a crucial role in sustaining local communities and holding cultural and socio-economic significance. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and structure of Burkina’s primary taurine cattle populations using 27 microsatellite markers. Blood samples from 143 cattle representing these populations were genotyped. The analysis included assessing genetic diversity, deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, calculating genetic distances, and population structure. The results revealed that all loci were polymorphic, indicating high allelic diversity. The overall mean FIS was moderate (0.028), ranging from -0.36 (CSRM60) to 0.73 (INRA035). Genetic differentiation between populations was moderate, accounting for 4% of the total differences. The highest pairwise FST was observed between Lobi and Gourounsi Ténado. The neighbor-joining tree displayed high admixture levels between Gourounsi populations, while Lobi cattle clustered as a distinct population. The population structure analysis indicated significant zebu gene introgression in Burkina taurine populations with relatively higher levels of admixtures in Gourounsi cattle compared to Lobi. The study provided a thorough genetic analysis of Burkina Faso's taurine cattle populations, uncovering the diversity and population structure. The study also revealed the differences in the prevalence of tsetse flies and associated trypanosomosis across the native tracts of Burkinabe taurine cattle populations had shaped the level of zebu introgression in them.

Cement-based stabilization/solidification is a commonly used method to prevent the transportation of heavy metal ions in soils. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the controlling mechanisms in cement-based stabilization/solidification of Pb ion-contaminated bentonite under two different curing conditions: closed and open systems. In an open system, the stabilized/solidified sample continues to have access to free water, while in a closed system, the stabilized/solidified sample is prevented from accessing any external water after initial mixing. To achieve this objective, a series of geo-environmental experiments, including pH, solubility measurements, TCLP, and XRD, were performed. In the first step, the bentonite sample was contaminated with 100 cmol/kg-soil of lead nitrate. After achieving equilibrium, the contaminated sample was stabilized/solidified with 15% cement. The results indicate that when 15% cement is applied to the contaminated bentonite, the pH ranges from 10.5 to 11.5, which is a safe domain for lead precipitation. In other words, the minimum required percentage of cement for stabilization/solidification is the quantity in which the pH of the system is in the necessary range for heavy metal precipitation. This quantity is generally a function of the type and concentration of the heavy metal contaminant. According to the experimental results of this research, the method of curing does not have a noticeable impact on the stabilization process of stabilized/solidified contaminated bentonite. However, the XRD results show that more pozzolanic components have formed in the closed system. Therefore, the achievement of EPA criteria for TCLP experiments in cured samples in the closed system is attributed to the more significant progress in pozzolanic interaction and more formation of C-S-H and C-A-S-H components at 28 days for cured samples under closed conditions.

Summary: Background: The scale of COVID-19 and its well documented long-term sequelae support a need to understand long-term outcomes including frailty. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited adults who had survived hospitalisation with clinically diagnosed COVID-19 across 35 sites in the UK (PHOSP-COVID). The burden of frailty was objectively measured using Fried's Frailty Phenotype (FFP). The primary outcome was the prevalence of each FFP group—robust (no FFP criteria), pre-frail (one or two FFP criteria) and frail (three or more FFP criteria)—at 5 months and 1 year after discharge from hospital. For inclusion in the primary analysis, participants required complete outcome data for three of the five FFP criteria. Longitudinal changes across frailty domains are reported at 5 months and 1 year post-hospitalisation, along with risk factors for frailty status. Patient-perceived recovery and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were retrospectively rated for pre-COVID-19 and prospectively rated at the 5 month and 1 year visits. This study is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN10980107. Findings: Between March 5, 2020, and March 31, 2021, 2419 participants were enrolled with FFP data. Mean age was 57.9 (SD 12.6) years, 933 (38.6%) were female, and 429 (17.7%) had received invasive mechanical ventilation. 1785 had measures at both timepoints, of which 240 (13.4%), 1138 (63.8%) and 407 (22.8%) were frail, pre-frail and robust, respectively, at 5 months compared with 123 (6.9%), 1046 (58.6%) and 616 (34.5%) at 1 year. Factors associated with pre-frailty or frailty were invasive mechanical ventilation, older age, female sex, and greater social deprivation. Frail participants had a larger reduction in HRQoL compared with before their COVID-19 illness and were less likely to describe themselves as recovered. Interpretation: Physical frailty and pre-frailty are common following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Improvement in frailty was seen between 5 and 12 months although two-thirds of the population remained pre-frail or frail. This suggests comprehensive assessment and interventions targeting pre-frailty and frailty beyond the initial illness are required. Abstract Background To study the efficacy and nephrotoxicity of polymyxin B in the treatment of elderly patients with carbapenem-resistant organism (CRO) infection. Methods The clinical and microbiological data of patients with CRO-infected sepsis treated with polymyxin B were retrospectively analyzed. The effective rate, bacterial clearance, incidence and recovery rate of acute renal injury (AKI) and prognosis-related indicators in AKI at different stages were compared. Results The effective rate of 215 elderly patients with CRO infection treated with polymyxin was 50.7%. The total bacterial clearance rate was 44.2%, the total incidence of AKI was 37.2%, the recovery rate of AKI was 35%, and the incidence range of polymyxin B-related AKI was 10.2–37.2%. Logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that the predictors of AKI in elderly patients were high APACHE II score, long duration of polymyxin, chronic renal insufficiency and ineffective outcome; the ROC curve showed that the cutoff value for predicting AKI was a serum creatinine concentration of 73 mmol/L before polymyxin B use, and the AUC was 0.931. Conclusions Rational use of polymyxin B is safe and effective in elderly patients with CRO infection, and its effective outcome can improve the recovery rate of AKI.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of fluorescence thoracoscopy-assisted temporary occlusion of pulmonary arteries and veins during sublobar resection for the treatment of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: This is a prospective cohort study. Patients with early-stage NSCLC who underwent fluorescence thoracoscopy-assisted temporary occlusion of pulmonary arteries and veins for sublobar resection in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January to April 2024 were included. Based on whether the artery or vein was blocked during surgery, the patients were divided into the arterial group and the venous group. The surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, distance from the lesion to the resection margin, and boundary duration were collected and compared between the two groups. Independent sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, or χ 2 test was used to compare the data between the two groups. Results: A total of 64 patients were enrolled. There were 25 males and 39 females, aged (57.3±12.1) years (range: 34 to 80 years). The tumor diameter was (9.8±2.9) mm (range: 5 to 16 mm), The distance between the surgical margin and the lesion was (16.5±3.9) mm (range: 10 to 30 mm) and the surgical time was (61.5±13.9) minutes (range: 30 to 120 minutes). Pathological examination of the surgical specimens showed that all margins met pathological requirements. The chest drainage tube retention time ( M (IQR)) was 2 (1) days (range: 1 to 7 days), and no serious postoperative complications occurred. The boundary duration for the arterial group ( n =23) and venous group ( n =41) was (147.9±22.2) seconds (range: 119 to 188 seconds) and (40.9±8.0) seconds (range: 20 to 60 seconds), respectively ( t =27.935, P <0.01). Conclusion: Fluorescence thoracoscopy-assisted temporary occlusion of pulmonary arteries and veins can effectively and accurately delineate surgical resection boundaries, ensuring sufficient margin width to meet oncological requirements.

Single-atom catalysts with maximal atom-utilization have emerged as promising alternatives for chlorine evolution reaction (CER) toward valuable Cl 2 production. However, understanding their intrinsic CER activity has so far been plagued due to the lack of well-defined atomic structure controlling. Herein, we prepare and identify a series of atomically dispersed noble metals (e.g., Pt, Ir, Ru) in nitrogen-doped nanocarbons (M 1 -N-C) with an identical M-N 4 moiety, which allows objective activity evaluation. Electrochemical experiments, operando Raman spectroscopy, and quasi-in situ electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses collectively reveal that all the three M 1 -N-C proceed the CER via a direct Cl-mediated Vomer-Heyrovský mechanism with reactivity following the trend of Pt 1 -N-C>Ir 1 -N-C>Ru 1 -N-C. Although the use of inactivated vaccines has kept avian influenza (AI) outbreaks largely under control, they fail to prevent virus shedding. To enhance the efficacy of inactivated H9N2 AIV vaccines (InV), we constructed a multi-epitope recombinant baculovirus (BV-BNT) containing two B cell epitopes and nine T cell epitopes of H9N2 AIV for combined immunization with InV. The results showed that HI titer, IgG and IgM levels, and the percentage of B cells, CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and CD4 + CD8 + T cells were significantly higher in the InV+BV-BNT immunization group than the InV immunization group. Besides, the expression levels of IL-1β, IFN-γ, IFN-α, IL-4, IL-13, and CXCLi1 were significantly higher in the InV+BV-BNT group than the InV group. Moreover, four conservative peptides (NP 182-190 , NP 455-463 , NS 198-106 , and NP 380-393 ) significantly stimulated splenocytes to express IFN-γ in the InV+BV-BNT group instead of InV group. After heterologous virus challenging, the percentages of CD4 + T and CD8 + T cells were significantly upregulated in the InV+BV-BNT group compared to Inv group at 3 DPI. Viral loads in oropharyngeal of the InV+BV-BNT group was significantly lower than that in the InV group at 3 days post-infection (DPI). Furthermore, compared to the InV group, the virus positivity rate of oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs in the InV+BV-BNT group was lower at 5 DPI, with none positive at 7 DPI. Hence, this study indicated that the combined immunization of InV and BV-BNT could induce stronger humoral and cellular immune responses, shorten the detoxification period and reduce viral load compared to Inv alone, which suggests BV-BNT could act as a supplementary vaccine to potentially address the protection deficiency of the H9N2 inactivated vaccine., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Two novel diketopiperazine dimers (1 and 2) and two new 4-hydroxyphenylacetates (5 and 6), along with two previously known diketopiperazine dimers were isolated from the culture of the endolichenic fungus Aspergillus sp. CPCC 400810. Their structures were determined through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS) and 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) refers to pure oxygen with a pressure greater than 1 atmospheres absolute (ATA), and when the pressure is too high, it can cause convulsive attacks. Adenosine and dopamine have been shown to be closely associated with HBO-induced convulsion seizures, and their receptors exhibited a coexisting relationship of mutual antagonism on the membrane of nerve cells. We explored the influence of adenosine and dopamine interplay on the occurrence of oxygen convulsion. Rats were individually exposed to HBO of 6 ATA and treated with adenosine, dopamine, and their receptor modulators separately and jointly, with the latency of convulsion onset recorded. In addition, after administering adenosine to rats and exposing them to HBO for 30 min, the content of dopamine and its metabolites and the activity of enzymes related to their metabolism were measured. The results revealed that dopamine was effective in resisting convulsion (>60 min vs. 32.53 ± 5.31 min, P = 0.000), and low-dose adenosine partially counteracted its effect (>60 min vs. 28.18 ± 6.24 min, P = 0.002). The combined use of adenosine A1 and dopamine D1 receptor modulators significantly impacted the incidence of convulsion. The activation or inhibition of the A2A receptor had a particularly significant impact on convulsion, whereas modulating the D2 receptor did not affect their effects. The combination of A1 agonist and D2 agonist was highly effective in resisting convulsion (>60 min vs. 32.53 ± 5.31 min, P = 0.000). Exposure to HBO accelerated the metabolism of dopamine to its end products, which may be related to the enhanced activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO). Adenosine can inhibit MAO activity (0.0766 ± 0.0150 U/mg.prot vs. 0.1055 ± 0.0086 U/mg.prot, P = 0.004), maintaining a higher level of dopamine (1.820 ± 0.379 mg/g vs. 0.602 ± 0.087 mg/g, P = 0.000). The study demonstrated that dopamine plays a significant role in oxygen convulsion and adenosine can affect dopamine metabolism. The interaction between them can have a crucial impact on the occurrence of oxygen convulsion. The findings offer a novel perspective for further investigating the mechanism of oxygen convulsion and exploring effective preventive strategies. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The interaction between adenosine and dopamine is critically important in determining the incidence of oxygen convulsion. Simultaneous regulation of both adenosine and dopamine offers a superior approach to counteract oxygen convulsion, achieving a synergistic effect exceeding the sum of their individual impacts. These findings provide new directions and insights for future in-depth and systematic exploration of the pathogenesis of central nervous system oxygen toxicity.

Objective: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia are highly vascularized infiltrating lesions that can lead to severe haemorrhagic complications. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia who experienced uterine haemorrhagic complications, and their management., Study Design: This retrospective study analysed the histories of 2099 patients with gestational trophoblastic neoplasia registered at the French Reference Centre for Trophoblastic Disease between 1999 and 2023., Results: Among 2099 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, 38 patients who experienced uterine haemorrhagic complications requiring interventional treatment were identified. Among them, 23 (61%) had a low-risk tumour and 15 (39%) had a high-risk tumour according to their International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics score. Twenty (53%) patients experienced haemoperitoneum and 18 (47%) patients experienced massive vaginal bleeding. Seventeen (45%) patients experienced uterine rupture. Haemorrhagic treatment consisted of surgery for 26 (70%) patients, exclusive uterine embolization for six (16%) patients, embolization followed by surgery for four (11%) patients, and embolization after failure to control bleeding by aspiration for one (3%) patient. Of the five deaths (13%), one (3%) was related to the uterine haemorrhagic complication. Three of 15 (20%) patients treated conservatively reported subsequent pregnancies., Conclusion: There are no established guidelines for managing severe uterine haemorrhagic complications. Double minutes (DMs), extrachromosomal gene fragments found within certain tumors, have been noted to carry onco- and drug resistance genes contributing to tumor pathogenesis and progression. After screening for SUMO-related molecule expression within various tumor sample and cell line databases, we found that SUMO-conjugating enzyme UBC9 has been associated with genome instability and tumor cell DM counts, which was confirmed both in vitro and in vivo . Karyotyping determined DM counts post-UBC9 knockdown or SUMOylation inhibitor 2-D08, while RT-qPCR and Western blot were used to measure DM-carried gene expression in vitro . In vivo , fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) identified micronucleus (MN) expulsion. Western blot and immunofluorescence staining were then used to determine DNA damage extent, and a reporter plasmid system was constructed to detect changes in homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathways. Our research has shown that UBC9 inhibition is able to attenuate DM formation and lower DM-carried gene expression, in turn reducing tumor growth and malignant phenotype, via MN efflux of DMs and lowering NHEJ activity to increase DNA damage. These findings thus reveal a relationship between heightened UBC9 activity, increased DM counts, and tumor progression, providing a potential approach for targeted therapies, via UBC9 inhibition.

Background: The introduction of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors represented a paradigm shift in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Genomic data from patients with high-grade ovarian cancer in six phase II/III trials involving the PARP inhibitor olaparib were analyzed to better understand patterns and potential causes of genomic instability., Patients and Methods: Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) was assessed in 2147 tumor samples from SOLO1, PAOLA-1, Study 19, SOLO2, OPINION, and LIGHT using next-generation sequencing technology. Genomic instability scores (GIS) were assessed in BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 (BRCA)-mutated (BRCAm), non-BRCA homologous recombination repair-mutated (non-BRCA HRRm), and non-HRRm tumors., Results: BRCAm was identified in 1021/2147 (47.6%) tumors. BRCAm tumors had significantly higher GIS than non-BRCAm tumors (P < 0.001) and high biallelic loss (815/838; 97.3%) regardless of germline (658/672; 97.9%) or somatic (101/108; 93.5%) BRCAm status. In non-BRCA HRRm tumors (n = 121) a similar proportion were HRD-positive (GIS ≥ 42: 55/121; 45.5%) relative to HRD-negative (GIS < 42: 52/121; 43.0%). GIS was highly variable in non-BRCA HRRm (median 42 [interquartile range (IQR) 29-58]) and non-HRRm (n = 1005; median 32 [IQR 20-55]) tumors. Gene mutations with high GIS included HRR genes BRIP1 (median 46 [IQR 41-58]), RAD51C (median 58 [IQR 48-66]), RAD51D (median 62 [IQR 54-69]), and PALB2 (median 64 [IQR 58-74]), and non-HRR genes NF1 (median 49 [IQR 25-60]) and RB1 (median 55 [IQR 30-71]). Objective: To evaluate the prognostic impact of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) detection at diagnosis (T0) and its early decrease after one cycle (T1) of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) included in the CHIVA trial (NCT01583322)., Methods: Blood samples were collected at T0 and before each administration of NACT. Circulating tumor DNA detection was performed by next-generation sequencing. Multivariate analysis was performed. A p-value of 0.05 was considered significant. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared between groups defined by ctDNA kinetic profile. Cox survival model was used to search variables associated with PFS and OS. Kaplan-Mayer curve was used to graphically express the differences in PFS and OS. A log-rank test compared the two curves., Results: 188 patients were included. Blood samples were available for 168 patients at T0 and for 160 patients at T0 and T1 to assess ctDNA ratio kinetics. At T0, 107 patients (63.7 %) had detectable ctDNA. At T1, 137 (85.6 %) patients had negative ctDNA or a decrease of more than 80 %. There was a significant benefit in either PFS (p = 0.0017) or OS (p = 0.0036) in favor of early decrease of ctDNA ratio. A favorable decrease was associated with a greater likelihood of being able to perform CRS (OR: 3.94 (CI95 % 1.45-10.70), p = 0.0074)., Conclusions: Early decrease of ctDNA ratio can provide prognostic information early in the management of patients, allowing a more accurate information to patients and an early preparation for CRS (prehabilitation)., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest, (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. We demonstrate both experimentally and analytically a strong coupling phenomenon between moiré-type plasmons and phonons within moiré superlattices. We study the dependence of moiré wave vector and the twist angle and numerically simulate and experimentally fabricate metallic moiré superlattices on a suspended thin film SiO 2 substrate at different twist angles. The results suggest that the coupling strength initially increases and then decreases with increasing twist angles. When the twist angle is at 16.26°, we achieve a moiré-type plasmon-phonon strong coupling with a Rabi splitting strength approaching 45 meV. We further analyze the coupling system by utilizing the coupled-harmonic-oscillators theory and quantum mechanical theory. The calculations and numerical simulations further agree with the experimental results. The proposed strong coupling system has the potential to contribute substantially to electromagnetic field controlling and coupling.

The development of membrane-bound protocells, which process cascade biochemical reactions in distinct microcompartments, marks a significant advancement in soft systems. However, many synthesized protocells with cell membrane-like structures are prone to rupturing in biological environments and are challenging to functionalize, limiting their biomedical applications. In this study, we explore the liquid-liquid phase separation of tannic acid (TA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form coacervate droplets. Upon introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) molecules, a dense hydrogen bonding network spontaneously forms at the surfaces of the coacervate droplets, resulting in robust fluidic membrane-bound protocells (FMPs). These protocells can be flexibly postfunctionalized to incorporate functional nanomaterials via electrostatic attraction, enabling the design of cascade reactions for biomedical applications. To demonstrate this, nanozymes (Pt/CeO 2 ) are assembled onto Fe 3+ /FMPs, resulting in functional FMPs (Pt/CeO 2 @Fe 3+ /FMPs) capable of catalyzing the degradation of uric acid and its harmful byproduct, H 2 O 2 , offering potential treatments for gout.

Background: High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) can be treated with platinum-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and delayed primary surgery (DPS). Histopathological response to NACT can be assessed using Böhm's chemotherapy response score (CRS). We investigated whether germline BRCA1/2 (gBRCA1/2) genotype associated with omental CRS phenotype., Methods: A retrospective study of patients with newly diagnosed FIGO stage IIIC/IV HGSOC prescribed NACT and tested for gBRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) between September 2017 and December 2022 at The Christie Hospital. The Cox proportional hazards model evaluated the association between survival and key clinical factors. The chi-square test assessed the association between CRS3 (no/minimal residual tumour) and gBRCA1/2 status., Results: Of 586 eligible patients, 393 underwent DPS and had a CRS reported. Independent prognostic factors by multivariable analysis were gBRCA1/2 status (PV versus wild type [WT]), CRS (3 versus 1 + 2), surgical outcome (complete versus optimal/suboptimal) and first-line poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1/2 inhibitor maintenance therapy (yes versus no) (all P < 0.05). There was a non-significant trend for tumours with a gBRCA2 PV having CRS3 versus WT (odds ratio [OR] = 2.13, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.95-4.91; P = 0.0647). By contrast, tumours with a gBRCA1 PV were significantly less likely to have CRS3 than WT (OR = 0.35, 95%CI 0.14-0.91; P = 0.0291)., Conclusions: Germline BRCA1/2 genotype was not clearly associated with superior omental CRS. The study investigates the effect of pulmonary surfactant (PS) coating on the performance of lysozyme-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs). The NPs were fabricated using a double emulsification technique and optimized using the Box-Behnken experimental design (BBED). The NPs were assessed for size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, drug loading (DL%), and encapsulation efficiency (EE%). In addition, the optimized PLGA NPs were modified with either a neutral dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine DPPC or an anionic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) with different molar ratios of PS to PLGA (PS: PLGA = 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1). These NPs were assessed for biological activity, drug release, mucus adhesion, mucus penetration, cellular uptake, toxicity, and in vivo destiny after intratracheal (IT) instillation to mice. Results showed a bi-phasic drug release, with no significant effect of PS on the release and biological activities of PLGA NPs. The PS@PLGA NPs improved mucus adhesion, decreased mucus penetration, and increased cellular internalization of PLGA NPs. In addition, ex vivo experiments demonstrated that DPPC@PLGA NPs and DPPG@PLGA NPs could adhere to mucus. These NPs created a thicker layer at the interface of the airway compared to unmodified PLGA NPs. Moreover, interaction of PS@PLGA NPs with BALF suggested improved mucoadhesive characteristics. Finally, the in vivo studies confirmed the precise distribution of all NPs in the lungs after IT administration. Background: The optimal exercise regimen for alleviating sarcopenia remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) over moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in ameliorating sarcopenia., Methods: We conducted a randomized crossover trial to evaluate plasma proteomic reactions to acute HIIT (four 4-min high-intensity intervals at 70% maximal capacity alternating with 4 min at 30%) versus MICT (constant 50% maximal capacity) in inactive adults. We explored the relationship between a HIIT-specific protein relative to MICT, identified via comparative proteomic analysis, eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 epsilon 1 (EEF1E1) and sarcopenia in a paired case-control study of elderly individuals (aged over 65). Young (3 months old) and aged (20 months old) mice were randomized to sedentary, HIIT and MICT groups (five sessions/week for 4 weeks; n = 8 for each group). Measurements included skeletal muscle index, hand grip strength, expression of atrophic markers Atrogin1 and MuRF1 and differentiation markers MyoD, myogenin and MyHC-II via western blotting. We examined the impact of EEF1E1 siRNA and recombinant protein on D-galactose-induced myoblast senescence, measuring senescence-associated β-galactosidase and markers like p21 and p53., Results: The crossover trial, including 10 sedentary adults (32 years old, IQR 31-32) demonstrated significant alterations in the abundance of 21 plasma proteins after HIIT compared with MICT. In the paired case-control study of 84 older adults (84 years old, IQR 69-81; 52% female), EEF1E1 was significantly increased in those with sarcopenia compared to those without (14.68 [95%CI, 2.02-27.34] pg/mL, p = 0.03) and was associated with skeletal muscle index (R 2  = 0.51, p < 0.001) and hand grip strength (R 2  = 0.54, p < 0.001). In the preclinical study, aged mice exhibited higher EEF1E1 mRNA and protein levels in skeletal muscle compared to young mice, accompanied by a lower muscle mass and strength, increased cellular senescence and protein degradation markers and reduced muscle differentiation efficiency (all p < 0.05). HIIT reduced EEF1E1 expression and mitigated age-related muscle decline and atrophy in aged mice more effectively than MICT. Notably, EEF1E1 downregulation via siRNA significantly counteracted D-galactose-induced myoblast senescence as evidenced by reduced markers of muscle protein degradation and improved muscle differentiation efficiency (all p < 0.05). Conversely, treatments that increased EEF1E1 levels accelerated the senescence process (p < 0.05). Further exploration indicated that the decrease in EEF1E1 was associated with increased SIRT1 level and enhanced autophagy., Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of HIIT as a promising approach to prevent and treat sarcopenia while also highlighting EEF1E1 as a potential intervention target., (© 2024 The Author(s). Interictal epileptiform spikes (spikes) and epileptogenic focus are strongly correlated. However, partial spikes are insensitive to epileptogenic focus, which restricts epilepsy neurosurgery. Therefore, identifying spike subtypes that are strongly associated with epileptogenic focus (traceable spikes) could facilitate their use as reliable signal sources for accurately tracing epileptogenic focus. However, the sparse firing phenomenon in the transmission of intracranial neuronal discharges leads to differences within spikes that cannot be observed visually. Therefore, neuro-electro-physiologists are unable to identify traceable spikes that could accurately locate epileptogenic focus. Herein, we propose a novel sparse spike feature learning method to recognize traceable spikes and extract discrimination information related to epileptogenic focus. First, a multilevel eigensystem feature representation was determined based on a multilevel feature representation module to express the intrinsic properties of a spike. Second, the sparse feature learning module expressed the sparse spike multi-domain context feature representation to extract sparse spike feature representations. Among them, a sparse spike encoding strategy was implemented to effectively simulate the sparse firing phenomenon for the accurate encoding of the activity of intracranial neurosources. The sensitivity of the proposed method was 97.1%, demonstrating its effectiveness and significant efficiency relative to other state-of-the-art methods.

A highly efficient methodology has been developed for the synthesis of 1,4-benzodioxepines through electrochemical oxyselenenylation of 2- O -tethered alkenyl phenylmethanol and diselenides under external oxidant-free conditions at room temperature. Experimental evidence supports this transformation to occur via a radical mechanism.

Objective: To assess the viability of using ultra-low radiation and contrast medium (CM) dosage in aortic computed tomography angiography (CTA) through the application of low tube voltage (60kVp) and a novel deep learning image reconstruction algorithm (ClearInfinity, DLIR-CI)., Methods: Iodine attenuation curves obtained from a phantom study informed the administration of CM protocols. Non-obese participants undergoing aortic CTA were prospectively allocated into two groups and then obtained three reconstruction groups. The conventional group (100kVp-CV group) underwent imaging at 100kVp and received 210 mg iodine/kg in combination with a hybrid iterative reconstruction algorithm (ClearView, HIR-CV). The experimental group was imaged at 60kVp with 105 mg iodine/kg, while images were reconstructed with HIR-CV (60kVp-CV group) and with DLIR-CI (60kVp-CI group). Student's t-test was used to compare differences in CM protocol and radiation dose. One-way ANOVA compared CT attenuation, image noise, SNR, and CNR among the three reconstruction groups, while the Kruskal-Wallis H test assessed subjective image quality scores. Post hoc analysis was performed with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons, and consistency analysis conducted in subjective image quality assessment was measured using Cohen's kappa., Results: The radiation dose (1.12 ± 0.23mSv vs. 2.03 ± 0.82mSv) and CM dosage (19.04 ± 3.03mL vs. 38.11 ± 6.47mL) provided the reduction of 45% and 50% in the experimental group compared to the conventional group. The CT attenuation, SNR, and CNR of 60kVp-CI were superior to or equal to those of 100kVp-CV. Compared to the 60kVp-CV group, images in 60kVp-CI showed higher SNR and CNR (all P < 0.001). There was no difference between the 60kVp-CI and 100kVp-CV group in terms of the subjective image quality of the aorta in various locations (all P > 0.05), with 60kVp-CI images were deemed diagnostically sufficient across all vascular segments., Conclusion: For non-obese patients, the combined use of 60kVp and DLIR-CI algorithm can be preserving image quality while enabling radiation dose and contrast medium savings for aortic CTA compared to 100kVp using HIR-CV., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest This study was conducted under a research agreement with Neusoft Medical Systems. Background: In January 2014, states expanded Medicaid access under the Affordable Care Act. We studied the financial implications of this policy on lung transplantation, a costly procedure., Methods: Lung transplant (LT) hospitalizations were identified within the National Inpatient Sample (2005-2020). Recipients were categorized as "pre-expansion" (1/2005-12/2013) versus "post-expansion" (1/2014-12/2020) of Medicaid and as being in "expander" versus "non-expander" regions. We calculated difference-in-differences estimates comparing pre- and post-expansion eras in expander versus non-expander regions for inflation-adjusted hospitalization costs and for discharge disposition. We evaluated total hospitalization costs using multivariable generalized linear regression, adjusting for recipient demographics, Charlson Comorbidity Index, single versus double-lung transplant, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), and mechanical ventilation usage., Results: Of the 29 225 LT recipients identified, 14 085 were pre-expansion and 15 140 were post-expansion. More recipients were insured by Medicaid in expander n = 735 (9%) versus non-expander n = 220, (3%) regions (p = 0.01) post-expansion. Hospitalization costs increased post- versus pre-expansion by $20 948 (95% CI = $8713-$33 183, p < 0.001) more in expander versus non-expander regions even after adjustment for risk factors associated with increased costs. Within expander regions, recipients post- versus pre-expansion were less likely to be discharged routinely (n = 2625, 28% vs. n = 3959, 44%) and more likely to be discharged to care facilities (n = 2045, 22% vs. n = 1045, 12%, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Although Medicaid expansion resulted in greater access to care, it was associated with increased hospitalization costs and fewer routine discharges for LT recipients. Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are a class of transposable elements formed by the integration of ancient retroviruses into the germline genome. They are inherited in a Mendelian manner and approximately constitute 8 % of the human genome. HERVs were considered as "junk DNA" for decades, but increasing evidence suggests that they play significant roles in pathological inflammation, neural differentiation, and oncogenesis. Specifically, HERVs expression has been implicated in several oncogenic processes and the formation of the tumor microenvironment. Indeed, the dual roles of HERVs in cancer, serving as both promoters of oncogenesis and forerunners of the innate antitumor immune response, remain a subject of debate. In this review, we will discuss how HERVs participate in cancer progression and how they are regulated. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental properties and potential function of HERVs in propagating oncogenesis and activating the antitumor immune response.
