Abstract: Abstract Kaon physics is at a turning point – while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop, held in September 2023 at CERN.

Abstract: Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 −6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 −6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

Abstract: A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract: Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract: Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract: Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ + μ − pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c 2.

Abstract: The first search for ultra-rare K+ decays into the π+e+e−e+e− final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018. An upper limit of 1.4×10−8 at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the K+→π+e+e−e+e− decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be (7.2±0.7)×10−11. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of 10−9 for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: K+→π+aa, a→e+e− and K+→π+S, S→A′A′, A′→e+e−.

Abstract: Abstract A sample of 2.8 × 104 K + → π + μ + μ − candidates with negligible background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. The model-independent branching fraction is measured to be (9.15 ± 0.08) × 10 −8, a factor three more precise than previous measurements. The decay form factor is presented as a function of the squared dimuon mass. A measurement of the form factor parameters and their uncertainties is performed using a description based on Chiral Perturbation Theory at O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (p 6).

Abstract: A search for the K+→μ−νe+e+ decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10−11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Abstract: Searches for lepton number violating K+→π−e+e+ and K+→π−π0e+e+ decays have been performed using the complete dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 5.3×10−11 and 8.5×10−10 are obtained on the decay branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The former result improves by a factor of four over the previous best limit, while the latter result represents the first limit on the K+→π−π0e+e+ decay rate.

Abstract: The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,717 new measurements from 869 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Most of the 120 reviews are updated, including many that are heavily revised. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app. The 2024 edition of the Review of Particle Physics should be cited as: S. 14. Health Care Management: Preventing Post-Surgical Falls after Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery through Predictive Analytics

Abstract: The adult population in the United States is more physically active and are living longer than prior generations. Due to the advancement in surgical techniques and the increased number of active people, there has been a rise in the number of hip and knee replacement surgeries. This rise in the number of surgeries is expected to continue. Post-surgical care is a critical component to a successful patient recovery. After surgery, patients experience limited mobility while the muscles around the impacted joints need time for inflammation to subside. Physicians and other medical providers are concerned with making sure that patients do not experience falls during this time as it may lead to more serious injuries. A sample dataset of patients who underwent elective hip or knee surgery from January 2014 to March 2020 has been provided to analyze other medical conditions that may contribute to the likelihood of a patient falling. The goal is to identify important factors that can assist in predicting the probability of a patient falling after surgery.

Abstract: The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \mu^{\pm} \nu$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) is an underground experimental cavern on the CERN Pr\'evessin site. Abstract: A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. Abstract: The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app.

Abstract: Ammonium persulfate is a mild oxidant capable of oxidizing the selenium-selenium bond through thermal activation or under drastic acid catalysis. In this paper we highlight that this reaction can be activated photochemically, starting from diphenyl diselenide in the absence of any organic or and/or metallic photocatalyst or additive. Abstract: This work aims at preparing and characterizing a versatile multifunctional platform enabling the immobilization of macromolecules on a titanium surface by robust covalent grafting. Functionalized titanium is widely used in the biomedical field to improve its properties. Despite its high biocompatibility and osteointegrability, titanium implants are not very stable in the long term due to the onset of inflammation and bacterial infections. The proposed method allows the superficial insertion of three different organic linkers to be used as anchors for the attachment of biopolymers or bioactive molecules. This strategy used green solvents and is a good alternative to the proposed classic methods that employ organic solvents. The uniformly modified surfaces were characterized by micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (micro-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS). The latter made it possible to assess the orientation of the linker molecules with respect to the titanium surface. To test the efficiency of the linkers, two polymers (alginate and 2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA)), with the potential ability to increase biocompatibility, were covalently attached to the titanium surfaces. The obtained results are a good starting point for the realization of stable polymeric coatings permanently bonded to the surface that could be used to extend the life of biomedical implants.

46. Investigating the Relationship between Developer Job Satisfaction and Life Satisfaction: A Global Analysis.

Abstract: This paper explores the association between developer job satisfaction and life satisfaction on a global scale. With the increasing prominence of the software development industry and its impact on individuals' professional and personal lives, understanding the connection between job satisfaction and overall life satisfaction becomes crucial. We present a comprehensive analysis based on data collected from diverse regions and cultures, aiming to determine the magnitude of the correlation between these two constructs. Through a systematic review of existing literature, surveys, and empirical studies, we compile a robust dataset encompassing responses from developers across different countries and career stages. To assess job satisfaction, we used a worldwide survey from StackOverflow. Life satisfaction is evaluated from the World Values Survey, the Human Development Index, and the World Happiness Report. We grouped the world into logical geographic regions to discover key insights. Our findings reveal a modest correlation between developer job satisfaction and life satisfaction worldwide. Despite the significant impact of job satisfaction on one's professional life, the influence on overall life satisfaction appears to be more nuanced. While several studies have reported positive associations between the two constructs, our analysis suggests that the correlation is relatively weak, indicating that job satisfaction alone cannot fully predict an individual's level of life satisfaction. Abstract: The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K± → π0π0μ±ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10−6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10−6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The first search for ultra-rare $K^+$ decays into the $\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. An upper limit of $1.4\times 10^{-8}$ at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the $K^+\to\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be $(7.2\pm0.7)\times 10^{-11}$. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of $10^{-9}$ for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: $K^+\to\pi^+aa$, $a\to e^+e^-$ and $K^+\to\pi^+S$, $S\to A^\prime A^\prime$, $A^\prime\to e^+e^-$.
