Data from multi-modal sensors, such as Red-Green-Blue (RGB) cameras, thermal cameras, microphones, and mmWave radars, have gradually been adopted in various classification problems for better accuracy. Some sensors, like RGB cameras and microphones, however, capture privacy-invasive data, which are less likely to be used in centralized learning. Although the Federated Learning (FL) paradigm frees clients from sharing their sensor data, doing so results in reduced classification accuracy and increased training time. In this article, we introduce a novel Heterogeneous Privacy Federated Learning (HPFL) paradigm to better capitalize on the less privacy-invasive sensor data, such as thermal images and mmWave point clouds, by uploading them to the server for closing the performance gap between FL and centralized learning. HPFL not only allows clients to keep the more privacy-invasive sensor data private, such as RGB images and human voices, but also gives each client total freedom to define the levels of their privacy concern on individual sensor modalities. For example, more sensitive users may prefer to keep their thermal images private, while others do not mind sharing these images. We carry out extensive experiments to evaluate the HPFL paradigm using two representative classification problems: semantic segmentation and emotion recognition. Several key findings demonstrate the merits of HPFL: (i) compared to FedAvg, it improves foreground accuracy by 18.20% in semantic segmentation and boosts the F1-score by 4.20% in emotion recognition, (ii) with heterogeneous privacy concern levels, it achieves an even larger F1-score improvement of 6.17–16.05% in emotion recognition, and (iii) it also outperforms the state-of-the-art FL approaches by 12.04–17.70% in foreground accuracy and 2.54–4.10% in F1-score. Aggression in the animal kingdom is a necessary component of life; however, certain forms of aggression, especially in humans, are pathological behaviors that are detrimental to society. Animal models have been used to study a number of factors, including brain morphology, neuropeptides, alcohol consumption, and early life circumstances, to unravel the mechanisms underlying aggression. These animal models have shown validity as experimental models. Moreover, recent studies using mouse, dog, hamster, and drosophila models have indicated that aggression may be affected by the "microbiota–gut–brain axis." Disturbing the gut microbiota of pregnant animals increases aggression in their offspring. In addition, behavioral analyses using germ-free mice have shown that manipulating the intestinal microbiota during early development suppresses aggression. These studies suggest that treating the host gut microbiota during early development is critical. However, few clinical studies have investigated gut-microbiota-targeted treatments with aggression as a primary endpoint. This review aims to clarify the effects of gut microbiota on aggression and discusses the therapeutic potential of regulating human aggression by intervening in gut microbiota. Introduction: It is critical to develop accurate and universally available biomarkers for dementia diseases to appropriately deal with the dementia problems under world-wide rapid increasing of patients with dementia. In this sense, electroencephalography (EEG) has been utilized as a promising examination to screen and assist in diagnosing dementia, with advantages of sensitiveness to neural functions, inexpensiveness, and high availability. Moreover, the algorithm-based deep learning can expand EEG applicability, yielding accurate and automatic classification easily applied even in general hospitals without any research specialist. Methods: We utilized a novel deep neural network, with which high accuracy of discrimination was archived in neurological disorders in the previous study. Based on this network, we analyzed EEG data of healthy volunteers (HVs, N = 55), patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD, N = 101), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB, N = 75), and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH, N = 60) to evaluate the discriminative accuracy of these diseases. Results: High discriminative accuracies were archived between HV and patients with dementia, yielding 81.7% (vs. AD), 93.9% (vs. DLB), 93.1% (vs. iNPH), and 87.7% (vs. AD, DLB, and iNPH). Conclusion: This study revealed that the EEG data of patients with dementia were successfully discriminated from HVs based on a novel deep learning algorithm, which could be useful for automatic screening and assisting diagnosis of dementia diseases. Purpose: An inevitable feature of ultrasound-based diagnoses is that the quality of the ultrasound images produced depends directly on the skill of the physician operating the probe. This is because physicians have to constantly adjust the probe position to obtain a cross section of the target organ, which is constantly shifting due to patient respiratory motions. Therefore, we developed an ultrasound diagnostic robot that works in cooperation with a visual servo system based on deep learning that will help alleviate the burdens imposed on physicians. Methods: Our newly developed robotic ultrasound diagnostic system consists of three robots: an organ tracking robot (OTR), a robotic bed, and a robotic supporting arm. Additionally, we used different image processing methods (YOLOv5s and BiSeNet V2) to detect the target kidney location, as well as to evaluate the appropriateness of the obtained ultrasound images (ResNet 50). Ultimately, the image processing results are transmitted to the OTR for use as motion commands. Results: In our experiments, the highest effective tracking rate (0.749) was obtained by YOLOv5s with Kalman filtering, while the effective tracking rate was improved by about 37% in comparison with cases without such filtering. Additionally, the appropriateness probability of the ultrasound images obtained during the tracking process was also the highest and most stable. The second highest tracking efficiency value (0.694) was obtained by BiSeNet V2 with Kalman filtering and was a 75% improvement over the case without such filtering. Conclusion: While the most efficient tracking achieved is based on the combination of YOLOv5s and Kalman filtering, the combination of BiSeNet V2 and Kalman filtering was capable of detecting the kidney center of gravity closer to the kidney's actual motion state. Furthermore, this model could also measure the cross-sectional area, maximum diameter, and other detailed information of the target kidney, which meant it is more practical for use in actual diagnoses. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Despite medical progress in each field in recent years, it is still insufficient for managing PDAC, and at present, the only curative treatment is surgery. A typical pancreatic cancer is relatively easy to diagnose with imaging. However, it is often not recommended for surgical treatment at the time of diagnosis due to metastatic spread beyond the pancreas. Even if it is operable, it often recurs during postoperative follow-up. In the case of PDAC with a diameter of 10 mm or less, the 5-year survival rate is as good as 80% or more, and the best index for curative treatment is tumor size. The early detection of pancreatic cancer with a diameter of less than 10 mm or carcinoma in situ is critical. The effectiveness of remdesivir on survival in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), especially in cases treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), is controversial. We investigated the effectiveness of remdesivir with corticosteroids on the survival of COVID‐19 patients in a real ICU clinical practice. For laboratory‐confirmed COVID‐19 patients admitted to the ICU of a tertiary hospital in Tokyo (April 2020–November 2021) and who received corticosteroids, the effectiveness of remdesivir for survival, stratified by interval length (within 9 or 10+ days), was retrospectively analyzed using Cox regression model. A total of 168 patients were included: 35 with no remdesivir use (control), 96 with remdesivir use within 9 days, and 37 with remdesivir use with an interval of 10+ days. In‐hospital mortality was 45.7%, 10.4%, and 16.2%, respectively. After adjusting for possible covariates including comorbidities, laboratory data, oxygen demand, or level of pneumonia, remdesivir use within 9 days from symptom onset reduced mortality risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.10; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.025–0.428) compared to the control group. However, remdesivir use with an interval of 10+ days showed no significant association with mortality (HR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.117–1.524). Tardigrades are able to tolerate almost complete dehydration by entering a reversible ametabolic state called anhydrobiosis and resume their animation upon rehydration. Dehydrated tardigrades are exceptionally stable and withstand various physical extremes. Although trehalose and late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins have been extensively studied as potent protectants against dehydration in other anhydrobiotic organisms, tardigrades produce high amounts of tardigrade-unique protective proteins. Cytoplasmic-abundant heat-soluble (CAHS) proteins are uniquely invented in the lineage of eutardigrades, a major class of the phylum Tardigrada and are essential for their anhydrobiotic survival. However, the precise mechanisms of their action in this protective role are not fully understood. In the present study, we first postulated the presence of tolerance proteins that form protective condensates via phase separation in a stress-dependent manner and searched for tardigrade proteins that reversibly form condensates upon dehydration-like stress. Through a comprehensive search using a desolvating agent, trifluoroethanol (TFE), we identified 336 proteins, collectively dubbed "TFE-Dependent ReversiblY condensing Proteins (T-DRYPs)." Unexpectedly, we rediscovered CAHS proteins as highly enriched in T-DRYPs, 3 of which were major components of T-DRYPs. We revealed that these CAHS proteins reversibly polymerize into many cytoskeleton-like filaments depending on hyperosmotic stress in cultured cells and undergo reversible gel-transition in vitro. Furthermore, CAHS proteins increased cell stiffness in a hyperosmotic stress-dependent manner and counteract the cell shrinkage caused by osmotic pressure, and even improved the survival against hyperosmotic stress. The conserved putative helical C-terminal region is necessary and sufficient for filament formation by CAHS proteins, and mutations disrupting the secondary structure of this region impaired both the filament formation and the gel transition. On the basis of these results, we propose that CAHS proteins are novel cytoskeleton-like proteins that form filamentous networks and undergo gel-transition in a stress-dependent manner to provide on-demand physical stabilization of cell integrity against deformative forces during dehydration and could contribute to the exceptional physical stability in a dehydrated state. Aversive memories have the potential to impair one's psychological well-being. It is desirable to reduce the anguish over such memories, as well as the chance that they will be retrieved. In two experiments, we investigated whether retrieval stopping reduces the distress elicited by negative memories retrieved from cues and how the effects of retrieval stopping are modulated by mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Participants engaged in retrieval stopping of aversive scene memories without any diversionary thoughts (direct suppression, Experiment 1) or with diversionary positive thoughts (thought substitution, Experiment 2). Direct suppression reduced arousal elicited by the retrieval of aversive memories, while thought substitution did not only reduce arousal but also increased positive valence. Self-reported anxious/depressive symptoms negatively modulated the effects of direct suppression. For no or mild anxious/depressed individuals, direct suppression alleviated negative valence and high arousal when retrieving aversive memories. The negative relationship was not observed between the severity of the symptoms and the effect of thought substitution. Introduction: Teneligliptin/canagliflozin combination tablets, which combine a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor (teneligliptin) and a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor (canagliflozin), are a treatment option for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Japan. This post-marketing surveillance evaluated the real-world safety and effectiveness of teneligliptin/canagliflozin combination tablets, and changes in self-reported adherence to oral antihyperglycaemic agents. Methods: Japanese patients with T2DM who were prescribed the combination tablets for the first time between December 2017 and June 2018 were registered and followed up for 12 months. Safety and effectiveness were assessed in terms of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and the changes in haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and body weight from baseline to 12 months with the last observation carried forward, respectively. Adherence was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale 8. Results: Overall, 821 patients were eligible for the analyses, including 733 who were prescribed the combination tablets for 12 months. ADRs and serious ADRs were reported in 4.38% and 0.85% of patients, respectively. Gastrointestinal disorders (0.97%) were the most common class of ADRs. No new safety concerns were identified beyond those described in the Japanese package insert. The changes in HbA1c and body weight from baseline to 12 months were − 0.43 ± 0.93% and − 1.29 ± 5.57 kg, respectively. The reductions in HbA1c at 12 months tended to be greater among patients who switched from either DPP-4 inhibitors (− 0.71 ± 0.89%) or SGLT2 inhibitors (− 0.51 ± 1.00%) relative to patients who switched from both (− 0.22 ± 0.88%). The decrease in body weight was greatest among patients who switched from DPP-4 inhibitors. An improvement in self-reported adherence to oral antihyperglycaemic agents occurred after switching to the combination tablets. Conclusion: Teneligliptin/canagliflozin combination tablets were effective and associated with an improvement in adherence without new safety concerns in Japanese patients with T2DM in real-world clinical practice.
