The prevalence of low vision is expected to increase at the national and international levels, given the aging population and the association between the prevalence of ocular disease(s) and increasing age. Thus, it is important to establish knowledge of the distribution, adequacy, and quality of available low vision rehabilitation services nationally and internationally. This will in turn help prioritize eyecare plans and initiatives, and thus deliver effective services. This cross-sectional study enumerated and surveyed all local government and information regarding the geographic location of each participating entity, entity affiliation, availability and types of low vision rehabilitation services, types of providers, and referral patterns were determined. The results of the current study showed that only 4% of the entities provided low vision rehabilitation services and most (75%) were located in the central region. Additionally, the majority of the services (95%) were basic optometric rehabilitation services whereas other services were either rarely offered or not offered at all. Overall, the current low vision rehabilitation services in Saudi Arabia are inadequate to meet the increasing prevalence of the low vision population. Purpose: To determine the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment among adults in Kogi, Nigeria. Methods: A Rapid assessment of avoidable blindness (RAAB) protocol was used with additional tools measuring disability and household wealth to measure the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment (VI) and associations with sex, disability, wealth, cataract surgical coverage and its effectiveness. Results: Age- and sex-adjusted all-cause prevalence of bilateral blindness was 3.6% (95%CI 3.0–4.2%), prevalence of blindness among people living with additional, non-visual disabilities was 38.3% (95% CI 29.0–48.6%) compared to 1.6% (95%CI 1.2–2.1%; χ2 = 771.9, p<0.001) among people without additional disabilities. Cataract was the principal cause of bilateral blindness (55.3%). Cataract surgical coverage (CSC) at visual acuity (VA) 3/60 was 48.0%, higher among men than women (53.7% vs 40.3%); 12.0% among people with non-visual disabilities; 66.9% among people without non-visual disabilities, being higher among people in the wealthiest two quintiles (41.1%) compared to the lowest three (24.3%). Effective Cataract Surgical Coverage at Visual Acuity 6/60 was 31.0%, higher among males (34.9%) than females (25.5%), low among people with additional, non-visual disabilities (1.9%) compared to people with no additional disabilities (46.2%). Effective CDC was higher among people in the wealthiest two quintiles (411%) compared to the poorest three (24.3%). Good surgical outcome (VA>6/18) was seen in 61 eyes (52.6%) increasing to 71 (61.2%) eyes with best correction. Cost was identified as the main barrier to surgery. Conclusion: Findings suggest there exists inequalities in eye care with women, poorer people and people with disabilities having a lower Cataract Surgical Coverage, thereby, underscoring the importance of eye care programs to address these inequalities. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and main causes of blindness and visual impairment in population aged 50 years and older in Armenia using Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) methodology. The study team randomly selected 50 clusters (each consisting of 50 people) from all 11 regions of Armenia. Data on participants' demographics, presenting visual acuity, pinhole visual acuity, principal cause of presenting visual acuity, spectacle coverage, uncorrected refractive error (URE), and presbyopia were collected using the RAAB survey form. Four teams of trained eye care professionals completed data collection in 2019. Overall, 2,258 people of 50 years and older participated in the study. The age- and gender- adjusted prevalence of bilateral blindness, severe and moderate visual impairment were 1.5% (95% CI: 1.0–2.1), 1.6% (95% CI: 1.0–2.2) and 6.6% (95% CI: 5.5–7.7), respectively. The main causes of blindness were cataract (43.9%) and glaucoma (17.1%). About 54.6% and 35.3% of participants had URE and uncorrected presbyopia, respectively. The prevalence of bilateral blindness and functional low vision increased with age and was the highest in participants 80 years and older. The rate of bilateral blindness was comparable with findings from countries that share similar background and confirmed that untreated cataract was the main cause of blindness. Given that cataract blindness is avoidable, strategies should be developed aiming to further increase the volume and quality of cataract care in Armenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low vision is an uncorrectable form of visual impairment that affect millions of people worldwide. Low vision care and rehabilitation are essential to improving the independence of affected individuals. Even though sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest burdens of low vision globally, there are inadequate care and rehabilitation services in most countries and in some cases they are non-existent This scoping review aimed to identify the barriers and enablers to low vision care and rehabilitation in sub-Saharan Africa and assess these within the global context. The review was conducted using the five-step Arksey and O'Malley framework. Search terms were formulated based on the research questions and a search strategy was designed to search for eligible research articles from electronic databases; Pubmed, Ovid, Medline, and Embase. The data was screened by two members of the research team in accordance with set inclusion and exclusion criteria. Twenty-five out of 260 articles satisfied the inclusion criteria for the study. Inadequate low vision care infrastructure and supplies, non-standardised training of low vision care providers, health system failure and poor awareness of low vision care were the main barriers noted by eye care practitioners. Patients living with low vision cited the cost and availability of low vision aids, societal stigma, and poor awareness of services as the main barriers. No direct enablers were identified in sub-Saharan Africa; however, practitioners suggested improved training in low vision as a potential enabler. The barriers to low vision care and rehabilitation services identified were not unique to sub-Saharan Africa when viewed within a global context. Adopting and adapting solutions from other countries may therefore assist in improving low vision care and rehabilitation in sub-Saharan Africa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Presbyopia is an age-related physiological phenomenon in which eye gradually losses its ability to accommodate. It is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide, especially in adults above the age of 40. If uncorrected, it can significantly impair a patient's quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the factors which affects patient's need and willingness to accept presbyopic correction. This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in a semi urban tertiary care hospital from Jan 2021 to June 2022 among patients aged 40 and above who presented to Outpatient department (OPD). Demographic details, medical history, presenting ocular complaints pertaining to presbyopia, spectacle use and decision regarding using near vision correction were noted. Ocular examination included refraction and ocular biometry. Factors that may have influenced complaints of presbyopia or willingness to accept presbyopic correction were analysed. Three hundred and forty two patients with a mean age of 48.55 ± 6.68 years were included. Of these, 262 (76.61%) patients presented with chief complaints related to presbyopia. Those with higher educational qualification (p = 0.031), hypermetropia (p = 0.021), shallower AC depth (p = 0.028) and on medications for systemic ailments (p = 0.01), were more likely to present with chief complaints attributable to presbyopia. Among them, those with higher educational qualifications (p = 0.02) and skilled workers were more likely to accept near vision glasses (p = 0.02), while those with lower Hb (p = 0.01) and myopia (p = 0.01) were less likely to accept correction for presbyopia. Among the 80 patients without chief complaints related to presbyopia, 35 (43.75%) were not willing to accept near vision glasses. Those with higher BMI (p = 0.04) and hypermetropes (p = 0.05) were more willing to accept presbyopic correction. Presbyopia constitutes a significant reason for patients above the age of 40 visiting eye care facility. Multiple socio-economic, systemic and ocular factors influenced both the chief complaints related to presbyopia and willingness to accept presbyopic correction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge of and perceived barriers to providing low vision services among eye care practitioners in Goa. Methods: A pretested and predesigned questionnaire was sent to 72 eye care practitioners, which included the optometrists and ophthalmologists working in Goa, through offline and online (social media like WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.) platforms. Information was collected to understand the barriers that restrict eye care practitioners from providing low vision services. Results: Seventy-two participants took part in this study, of which 26.39% (n=19) were ophthalmologists and 73.61% (n=53) were optometrists. From the practitioner's point of view, lack of awareness (70.83%, n=51) and training (68.06%, n=49) were the major barriers to providing low vision services. Objective: The main aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practises about eye health among the Indian community. Methodology: The objective of this cross-sectional survey study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practises (KAP) of persons residing in rural areas of Bihar with visual impairment (VI) regarding their utilisation of medical eye-care services. The collection of KAP data occurred between the months of May and June 2023, facilitated by a group of proficient researchers. The survey consisted of a total of 16 Yes/No questions pertaining to the participant's knowledge of low vision and their behaviours regarding seeking eye care. Additionally, there was one question that required a singlechoice response regarding the participant's attitudes towards eye care. Furthermore, four singlechoice questions were included to assess the participant's tendencies in seeking eye care services. Results: There was no statistically significant disparity observed in the proportion of participants who had sought professional eye care prior to the survey, based on various demographic factors including gender, age, education, income level, family history of eye disease, visual acuity of the better-seeing eye, and personal history of diabetes or hypertension. There were notable disparities observed among individuals who self-identified their vision as poor, got an old-age pension, or had a personal history of eye disease. Specifically, approximately 36.4%, 66.7%, and 55.6% of these respective groups reported seeking medical care. The level of accurate understanding of visual acuity and eye disease exhibited significant variation throughout the sample. The highest proportion, 77.4% of participants, correctly recognised that individuals with myopia have the ability to see objects nearby but struggle with distant vision. Conversely, only a small percentage, 17.1%, were aware that the loss of far vision is not an inherent consequence of the ageing process. Conclusion: In summary, the visually impaired individuals in Bihar shown a lack of awareness regarding the importance of consistently accessing eye care services. Developing ways to enhance public awareness of the correlation between deteriorating vision and preventable blindness resulting from diagnosable and treatable illnesses within eye clinics situated in local hospitals is of utmost significance. Purpose: Evidence supports the clinical decision‐making ability of primary care optometrists with additional qualifications in the identification of eligibility criteria for the certification of vision impairment (CVI). Welsh Government policy is driving pathway change to enable these optometrists to perform CVI. This qualitative study explores the views of people with VI due to dry age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) on this pathway change. Methods: Nine people with VI due to dry AMD, attending Macular Society support groups, participated. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted and analysed concurrently using thematic analysis. Results: Five major themes were identified: (1) living with dry AMD, (2) experience of eye care provision, (3) knowledge of CVI, (4) provision of information and (5) CVI in primary care. Participants consistently highlighted the need for the provision of accessible information regarding the certification pathway, dry AMD and the optometrist's role in the provision of eye health care. Information needs to be available prior to the diagnosis of an eye disease, rather than only from the point of diagnosis or where the vision reaches the level required for certification. Conclusion: The findings support the provision of CVI within primary eye care while highlighting areas of importance in pathway development. These include the provision of accessible information prior to, at the point of and following the diagnosis of an eye condition. Information provided needs to extend to the awareness of the role of the optometrist in the provision of eye care, and public health awareness of modifiable risk factors, which will influence the possibility of disease development in later life. Vision loss and blindness are among the top ten disabilities in the United States, yet access and utilization of eye care remains low. Vision Detroit aimed to address eye-care disparities via community-based screenings. By investigating burden of eye disease and barriers to eye-care utilization in an underserved urban community, we may direct efforts to improve access. Twenty-three screenings were conducted from March 2015-November 2017. Patient information gathered at screenings were demographics, medical and social history, eye exam/referral history, insurance status, primary care physician (PCP) status, and patient-perceived eye-care barriers. Three-hundred-eighty patients were screened, 42% African American and 51% Hispanic. Average age was 53 ± 16.4 years, 70% reported vision problems, 50% reported over two years of vision problems, and average habitual visual acuity in best-seeing eye was 20/37. Eye-care underutilization was reported in 61% of type-2 diabetics. Older age and PCP recommendations/referrals were associated with increased utilization in all patients. Insurance was the most common barrier (53%); of the 55% insured, 31% reported financial barriers. Employed patients were more likely than unemployed to report a time barrier (odds ratio = 1.76, 95% confidence interval 1.03–3.01). Those with high school or less education reported "unaware of need", "unsure where to go", "transportation", and "insurance" as barriers more often. Visual burden was pervasive, yet access was suboptimal. Financial, logistical, and awareness barriers were common. PCP referral and older age were associated with increased utilization. Purpose: To identify the profile of a pediatric low-vision population and investigate the differences between low-vision services in urban and rural areas. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of the records of 286 consecutive children presenting at the Low Vision Clinic of the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University from January 2009 to December 2018. The data retrieved included age, sex, education, family history, rural vs. urban residence, cause of visual impairment, and low-vision aids dispensed. Results: Of the 286 children (65.0% boys and 35.0% girls), over half (178, 62.2%) were from urban areas. The age range of the patients was 3–15 years (mean 9.54 ± 4.11). The four major causes of visual impairment were congenital cataract (70, 24.5%), optic atrophy (37, 12.9%), congenital glaucoma (34, 11.9%), and macular dystrophy (31, 10.8%). Low-vision aids were prescribed for 203 children (71.0%), with binocular telescopes (69, 25.0%) and stand magnifiers (66, 23.9%) being the most common. The urban children enjoyed higher rates of low-vision services than the rural children, with more low-vision aids (192, 94.6%) prescribed for the former. Conclusions: Congenital and hereditary diseases constituted the major causes of low vision in the study population. In contrast to their urban counterparts, the rural children experienced inadequate low-vision rehabilitation. Our findings suggest that policymakers need to better address gender inequalities and urban–rural disparities in low-vision services and that the coverage of low-vision services, especially in rural areas, should be enhanced in China. The Pandemic of 2020 impacted conducting in-person research. Our proposed project already had an asynchronous online component but was later morphed to add a synchronous online component, thereby eliminating the need for in-person assessment. The project compares the results of various tests between a group of children with Cerebral Visual Impairments (CVI) (N = 4) and an age-matched sample of children without CVI (N = 3) from a pediatric low vision clinic. This model was trialed with a small convenient sample of typically developing children in the same age range (N = 4). Given the positive feedback, recruitment for the larger study was done via encrypted e-mail rather than through traditional mailing. The asynchronous components included recruitment, pre-assessment information, the Flemish CVI questionnaire, Vineland-3 comprehensive parent questionnaire for assessment of age equivalent, and vision function tests, such as contrast sensitivity. The synchronous components were administered via Zoom telehealth provided by necoeyecare.org and included assessment of visual acuity via the Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test (FrACT) electronic software and assessment of visual perceptual batteries via the Children's Visual Impairment Test for developmental ages 3–6-years (CVIT 3–6). Our virtual testing protocol was successful in the seven participants tested. This paper reviews and critiques the model that we utilized and discusses ways in which this model can be improved. Aside from public health considerations during the pandemic, this approach is more convenient for many families. In a broader perspective, this approach can be scaled for larger N studies of rare conditions, such as CVI without being confined by proximity to the researcher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
