Satellite imagery has become a major source for identifying and mapping terrestrial and planetary landforms. However, interpretating landforms and their significance, especially in changing environments, may still be questionable. Consequently, ground truth to check training models, especially in mountainous areas, can be problematic. This paper outlines a decimal format, [dLL], for latitude and longitude geolocation that can be used for model interpretation and validation and in data sets. As data have positions in space and time, [dLL] defined points, as for images, can be associated with metadata as nodes. Together with vertices, metadata nodes help build 'information surfaces' as part of the Digital Earth. This paper examines aspects of the Critical Zone and data integration via the FAIR data principles, data that are; findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. Mapping and making inventories of rock glacier landforms are examined in the context of their geomorphic and environmental significance and the need for geolocated ground truth. Terrestrial examination of rock glaciers shows them to be predominantly glacier-derived landforms and not indicators of permafrost. Remote-sensing technologies used to track developing rock glacier surface features show them to be climatically melting glaciers beneath rock debris covers. Distinguishing between glaciers, debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers over time is a challenge for new remote sensing satellites and technologies and shows the necessity for a common geolocation format to report many Earth surface features. This paper explores illegal coca crop expansion in indigenous Amazonian communities in Peru. The ethnographic study sheds light on the historical development of these areas as frontier spaces, where the growth of illicit crops intertwines with socio-ecological transformations and gives rise to conflicts over new forms of land control, opportunities for capital accumulation, and political power dynamics. The paper argues that this expansion is shaped by dual processes: from 'below,' involving small-scale migrant farmers from the Andes, and from 'above,' primarily driven by state-led agrarian interventions. Consequently, communities experience significant tensions, as they adapt to the forces of market expansion to secure their livelihoods, while simultaneously facing risks of violence and insecurity. Landforms of the United States (1939) by Erwin Raisz is one of the best examples of cartographic excellence depicting the landscape based on underpinning geological structure. With the block diagram as the foundation for landform mapping, this paper details the development of the landform map comparing works and lives of two of the most prominent physiographic landform cartographers, Erwin Raisz and Armin K. Lobeck, who each had Dr. Douglas Johnson as a PhD advisor at Columbia University. Comparing the 1921 Physiographic Diagram of the United States by Lobeck with the 1939 Raisz map, this paper argues that Raisz far exceeded Lobeck in the articulation of the landscape by way of the map. Virtual reality is a technological development that, among others, has revolutionized Earth sciences. Its advantages include an opportunity to examine places otherwise difficult or impossible to access and it may also become an important component of education, fostering a better understanding of processes and landforms, geohazard awareness, and an appreciation of geoheritage. This paper reports on the GeoVT project, which aims to create a platform to build and disseminate Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) focused on geomorphology, natural hazards associated with geomorphological processes, and geoheritage sites. To put the GeoVT project in context, an overview of applications of VR in geosciences is provided. This paper subsequently proceeds with a presentation of the project and the GeoVT Authoring application, which is an innovative platform designed to help teachers and students, followed by brief presentations of a number of VFTs developed within the project. They address themes such as fluvial landforms and valley development, coastal landforms, evidence of past glaciation, coastal erosion, wildfire effects, mud volcanoes, and landslides. Although geoheritage is gaining importance wordwide, much appreciation is still required for the overlooked geoheritage resources. The geoheritage of Saudi Arabia is promising and gaining much attention towards geoconversation and geotourism, but thematic publications are limited compared to the global context. This paper aims to identify the relevant geosites in Saudi Arabia according to the IUCN theme and propose a geoheritage strategic plan. For identification of the geosite, we have conducted a comprehensive review of published literature and online material, including web blogs, YouTube videos, social media, and governmental websites. For the strategic plan for known/unknown geosite, published literature from established geoparks with similar key landforms has been reviewed. Seven IUCN themes can be linked with the geoheritage of Saudi Arabia. Most of these sites are local tourist spots, therefore, immense potential for the geotourism development. The key geomorphological heritage in Saudi Arabia is volcanic harrat, escarpment, cave, mesas, butte, pinnacle, canyon, island, aeolian dune, and submarine corals. Geological heritage includes various fossils in Tuwaiq Mountain. Submarine geoheritage includes different colourful corals and rock structures with high scientific value. Biodiversity-protected area and cultural heritage site enhance the geoheritage value of the geosite, and its geotourism importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold waves, as a common natural disaster, have a significant impact on economic development and living environment in coastal areas, especially in estuary regions. This paper utilizes the Delft3D software based on a rectangular grid, driven by the eight major tidal harmonic constituents of M2, S2, N2, K2, K1, O1, P1, and Q1, to construct a hydrodynamics and sediment numerical model. The study focuses on the morphodynamic changes in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) during a severe cold wave and strong wind event. By simulating the intense cold wave from November 28 to 30, 2022, the effects on the sedimentation in the YRD were analyzed. Results show that the cold wave process increases the water levels in the nearshore areas, with a general rise of more than 0.2 m in the YRD waters, particularly severe at the old Yellow River (YR) estuary and the northwest part of Laizhou Bay, reaching 0.25-0.35 m. This increase leads to intensified erosion and sedimentation in different areas near the YR estuary, especially near the old YR estuary and in the northwest part of Laizhou Bay. After a cold wave process, the erosion and sedimentation increase significantly by 0.05-0.1m. Furthermore, by comparing the flow speed differences and tidal-induced Eulerian residual currents with and without cold waves, it was found that around the YRD, from the current river estuary to the old YR estuary, the maximum flow speed increased by more than 0.35 m/s during the cold wave, and the maximum Eulerian residual currents also increased by 0.13 m/s. The direction of the residual currents changed from northwest-southeast to southnorth, further confirming the significant impact of cold waves on the morphodynamic evolution of the YRD. This study provides new perspectives and methods for understanding and predicting morphodynamic changes in estuarine regions during cold waves, which is significant for disaster prevention, mitigation, and management of estuarine areas. In recent years, the application of real scene 3D technology has become widespread in urban planning and cultural heritage protection. However, there has been relatively little attention paid to the construction of real scene 3D models for special natural landscapes such as caves. Given the global distribution of karst topography and the large number of naturally developed caves with diverse types, unique landscape styles, and significant scientific value, this paper enriches the research in this field. By combining ground-based and aerial remote sensing techniques, and based on 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry, we have successfully constructed a real scene 3D model of the internal structure of a karst cave with a precision better than 4 cm. Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) oblique photography, we established a real scene 3D model of the external karst landform with a precision better than 2 cm. We also integrated the internal and external 3D models of the cave, developing a new, complete, and high-precision method for constructing real scene 3D models of karst cave landscapes. Furthermore, we proposed a method for texture reproduction in the dark environment inside the caves, enhancing the reproduction and visual appeal of the real interior. The establishment of high-precision real scene 3D models can not only serve as an effective tool for scientific research on caves but also, as replicas of the real world, play a crucial role in public dissemination and education, thereby enhancing public understanding of cave geological landscapes. Glaciers are one of the most active erosional forces sculpting mountainous regions, and understanding the diversity of glacial valleys is a key to advancing knowledge of mountain evolution. 'Inverted trapezoidal' glacial valleys are an important type of glacial erosional landform, and research on their morphologic characteristics and causal mechanisms might contribute to a deeper comprehension of the variety of landforms formed by glacial erosion. In this paper, ALOS 12.5m DEM data and field geomorphologic surveys were used to quantitatively extract 171 transect parameters from 32 valleys in the study area and to quantitatively describe the morphologic characteristics of the inverted trapezoidal glacial valley transects based on the V-index model. The results show that the minimum V-index value for glacial valley cross-sections in the study area is 0.42, the maximum value is 0.86, and the mean value is 0.60. The most important factors influencing the diversity in the morphology of glacial valleys in the study area are the area of glacial action and climatic conditions. The formation of inverted trapezoidal glacial valleys may be attributed to the stable glacial action region of ice caps with gentle topography in Geladandong snow mountain. Research highlights: The minimum value of the V-index for glacial valley cross-sections in the study area was 0.42, the maximum value was 0.86, and the mean value was 0.60. The greatest number of cross-sections were concentrated in the 0.60 ~0.70 interval. This paper aims to describe the landscape and seascape terminology of Alorese, an Austronesian language spoken in the Alor archipelago of eastern Indonesia. Alorese uses unique way of expressing landscape terminology by retaining some of its ancestral Austronesian landscape terminology and innovating relatively new forms, functions and semantic references from its neighboring non-Austronesian languages. Previous research show that Alorese has innovated relatively new forms due to contact with its surrounding non-Austronesian languages. The current paper fills the gap where there has not been any discussion regarding the Alorese landscape terminology outside its preposition function. Discussion on cross-linguistic categorization, such as landscapes in areas such as eastern Indonesia is proven to be fruitful. The Alorese linguistic landscapes are expressed through geographical references and some forms appear unique to Alorese's dialectal variations. In general, the reference to elevations and directionalities in Alorese is achieved through geographical references, such as nala kokar 'towards Kokar (a town)' or klou lau 'seawards (lau 'sea')' rather than generic land form terms, suchas wara 'westwards' which is also an Indonesian loan barat 'west'. Its non-Austronesian borrowed terminologies include words, such as iti dola 'mountainwards', containing loanwords from Alor-Pantar (Papuan) languages dol 'mountain'. The data of this research were gathered from my 2018 and 2020 fieldwork in 14 Alorese villages located across the northern coast of Alor and Pantar as well as the small islands of Buaya and Ternate. Collections of terminologies show variations in the use of words not only depending on the geographical references, but also relative to the neighboring non-Austronesian languages. A structural landform is defined by its surface morphology, controlled by tectonics, lithology (arrangement and resistance), and folded structures, and demonstrated by the characteristics and relationships between geological and geomorphic elements. It is very important to use geographic information system (GIS) technology to accurately describe and express elements of structural landforms and their relationships. In this study, a GIS approach for expressing structural landforms, based on "forms–elements–relationships", was developed. The contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) Combined with the surface morphological characteristics, the structural landforms were abstracted into geological and geomorphic elements, and the characteristics and relationships of these elements were analyzed. (2) The elements of structural landforms and their relationships were abstracted into spatial objects and topological relationships. The spatial objects of the structural landform were designed based on the types and characteristics of structural landform elements. The topological relationships were developed based on the definition of the structural landform morphotype. (3) The structural landform markup language (SLML) method of "forms–elements–relationships" was created. (4) Two typical structural landforms, namely, Qixia Mountain and Gaoli Mountain, were used as examples to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the GIS approach for expressing structural landforms. This paper describes and expresses the "forms–elements–relationships" of structural landforms from the perspective of GIS, which is expected to promote the joint development of structural geomorphology and GIS. Geomorphology of Lebanon presents a unique pattern of contrasting landforms. These include two notable mountain ranges, the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon Mountains, the Beqaa Valley, the elongated coastal area and a significant amount of karst relief forms. This study focuses on the investigation of the topographic and geologic setting of Lebanon by visualizing datasets covering Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountains and the Beqaa Valley. Data were collected using the open source repositories of the high-resolution data (GEBCO, ETOPO1, DEM embedded in R). Three 3D models of the relief of the country are presented based on the 'grdview' package of GMT with azimuth rotations of the view point at 205°/30° and 165°/30°. The geologic map is based on the compiled datasets of the USGS. The R based modelling allowed division of the raster grid into several geomorphological zones according to the slope steepness and aspect orientation. The extreme elevations of the study area range from -2007 m and 2973 m. The key contribution of this work is the topographic and geologic data synthesis for 2D and 3D modelling of Lebanon. Another aspect concerns technical integration of GMT and R scripting approaches with QGIS mapping into the cartographic framework for visualizing of the Lebanese topography as a multi-tool approach. For the future similar studies on Lebanon this paper can serve as a guide for completing a project on the multi-source 2D and 3D data mapping as a conceptual foundation for research on Lebanese environment. The efficiency of beach recovery during a time of moderate waves following storm waves is closely related to the interaction between dynamics, sediment, and the landform. The existing studies mainly focus on the description of erosion and accretion characteristics, while the response and feedback mechanism of beach berm sediment have not been elucidated. The main controlling factors of recovery efficiency are not clear. In this paper, field observation and the XBeach numerical model are utilized on the sandy beach in Puqian Bay, China, to capture high-frequency cross-shore data during the post-storm recovery period. The variation characteristics and rules of berm elements, including berm ridge height and slope on two sides of the berm ridge, are analyzed. It is observed that the berm constantly changes to adapt to dynamic conditions. Additionally, a correlation between volume change and certain landform parameters is proposed, leading to the identification of a new relationship in wave run-up. Accurate snow cover modeling is a high-stakes issue for mountain regions. Alpine snow evolution and spatial variability result from a multitude of complex processes including interactions between wind and snow. The SnowPappus blowing snow model was designed to add blowing snow modeling capabilities to the SURFEX/Crocus simulation system for applications across large spatial and temporal extents. This paper presents the first spatialized evaluation of this simulation system over a 902 km 2 domain in the French Alps. Here we compare snow cover simulations to the spatial distribution of snow height obtained from Pléiades satellites stereo imagery and to snow melt-out dates from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 time series over three snow seasons. We analyzed the sensitivity of the simulations to three different precipitation datasets and two horizontal resolutions. The evaluations are presented as a function of elevation and landform types. The results show that the SnowPappus model forced with high-resolution wind fields enhances the snow cover spatial variability at high elevations allowing a better agreement between observed and simulated spatial distributions above 2500 m and near peaks and ridges. Model improvements are not obvious at low to medium altitudes where precipitation errors are the prevailing uncertainty. Our study illustrates the necessity to consider error contributions from blowing snow, precipitation forcings, and unresolved subgrid variability for robust evaluations of spatialized snow simulations. Despite the significant effect of the unresolved spatial scales of snow transport, 250 m horizontal-resolution snow simulations using SnowPappus are found to be a promising avenue for large-scale modeling of alpine snowpacks. Small-scale landslides that occur at unexpected locations and seasons can cause severe losses of life and property. Unusually, the Shidang landslide occurred prior to the rainy season in Jinkouhe County, Sichuan Province, China, resulting in 19 deaths and missing persons. In this paper, landslide characteristics and causes are revealed through a field investigation, laboratory experiments, and numerical calculations. The results show that the Shidang landslide was a small-scale landslide with a total volume of approximately 19500 m3, originating from hollow colluvial deposits. The geomorphological hollow above the landslide provided topographic conditions for the collection of subsurface runoff. Groundwater flow was transported downward along dolomite and accumulated in the area above shale, with a low conductivity. Groundwater table rise combined with the decrease in the soil strength led to landslide occurrence. Improper siting of residential areas and insufficient vigilance against post-rainfall landslides caused this tragedy. Considering the post-disaster lessons, it is strongly recommended that in the future, more attention should be given to the investigation of landslides triggered by groundwater, especially in determining landslide hydrological system boundaries. In mountainous areas where the developable space is limited, areas with hollow landforms are potentially at risk of geohazards. This paper could provide a reference for the prevention and management of similar landslides and new insights for updating landslide investigation systems and residential housing plans. Geosites are windows into the geological past, which may be recorded in rocks and their properties, the fossil content, and landform produced by processes no longer operating. Since the histories of sedimentation, life, and landscape evolution are to a certain extent controlled by climatic conditions, some geosites may be used as illustrations of various themes linked to the issue of climate change. In this paper, a coherent systematic framework is proposed for how to look at geosites through the lens of climate change. Four major aspects of relevance are recognized: (i) geosites providing evidence of changing climatic conditions in the past; (ii) geosites providing evidence of an environment different than that of today at the place; (iii) geosites providing evidence of extreme weather events; and (iv) dynamic geosites, subject to change as a response to ongoing climate change. The use of geosites to raise awareness and educate the public about climate change faces various interpretation challenges. In particular, linking with ongoing climate change requires caution and balanced presentation as most geosites record changes which occurred without any anthropogenic component. The ground lease is a form of land tenure where the property rights are split between the lessor (landowner) and the lessee (land user). Additional ground lease features, such as the obligation to pay ground rent, depend on factors including the legal framework and lessor requirements. Ground lease features can lead to interpretation problems for ground leaseholders and even valuers, such as misunderstanding the extent of ground rent review. This paper examines location-based differences in order to highlight ground lease variability across countries. The term 'ground lease' is effectively a catch-all term for a tenure type that can display considerable differences depending on the location. Recognition of potential ground lease pitfalls and how ground leases differ across jurisdictions is necessary in an increasingly connected world. This paper advocates for uniform international ground lease terminology that more completely explains the extent of tenure rights of each ground lease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terrain feature points, such as peaks, pits, and saddles, represent the macro-structure of the landform. Conventional techniques for extracting these points from digital elevation models (DEMs) often grapple with issues of inaccuracy, omission and redundancy, largely due to the problematic necessity of setting threshold values. This paper proposes an innovative approach for the automatic detection of terrain feature points based on the topological relationships of contours and the inherent constraints of terrain shape characteristics. The study provides a robust mathematical model of terrain feature points and an effective algorithm for their extraction. Comparing with manually reference data, the accuracy metrics including completeness, correctness, and quality of our extracted results demonstrate a high level, significantly surpassing those obtained through existing algorithms. This proposed approach not only avoids the spurious feature points produced by the local window method, but also prevents the omission of valid points and the creation of redundant ones. Moreover, by utilizing the contour interval as its only variable, our approach eliminates the need for various threshold settings, streamlining the extraction process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an introduction to a collection of nine studies that are intended to fill the gap in the literature associated with landform development and landscape changes related to natural forces and human activities in the Central European Mountains and their close forelands. The papers are grouped into four general categories that describe the influence of climate on glacial landforms and snow avalanches, the evolution of slopes in high mountains, the development of mid-mountain relief, and changes in fluvial systems in mountains and their forelands. This paper summarises the contributions of these studies to this special issue and attempts to outline possible avenues of future research on landforms and landscapes in mountainous areas. This note suggests that decimal latitude/longitude [dLL] locations should be used to identify features of interest, landforms, sample and investigations sites, in an 'information landscape' provided by the geomorphological literature. All the information associated with a labelled, or tagged, geolocation should be available for examination as part of information landscapes that can be explored and represented in books, papers and other publications. This note also outlines the 'open' and FAIR data that are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable and how the principles can be used to better explain landscapes, especially in the mountain landscape domain. Tors and rock glaciers illustrate [dLL] geolocation to identify sites and inform fieldwork and literature searching. Any [dLL]‐specified location is an identifying label, as are names given to landforms and toponyms. Two letters (digraph) are used as landform labels: TO for tors and RG for rock glaciers. Citations, (author–date–title–source) attributions, are also labels. The note shows how these attributions can be linked to [dLL] geolocations specifying locations in time and space and in the literature. The addition of [dLL] will facilitate future literature searches and modelling to explore 'unknowns' in the landscape, and this paper suggests ways in which this can be achieved, including geoheritage and geotourism. Kerinci Regency is located on the western to the southwestern part of the capital city of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It has interesting geomorphological sites consisting of the physiography of the Barisan Mountain Zone associated with the Sumatran Fault System known as a volcanic-tectonic complex. Geomorphology has an important role in providing information of the landscape in an area. This paper aims to determine the geomorphological characteristics of the area which can provide information regarding disaster mitigation, the direction of land-use innovation, and infrastructure development strategies. This research uses analyses of morphographic, morphometric, morphogenetic, morphoconservation, and morphochronological aspects. Analysis of satellite images and topographic contours is a method used to determine the characteristics of drainage patterns and geological mapping. A significant result of this research is a geomorphological map of Kerinci that divides the area into several geomorphological units, namely volcanic-denudational, karst, structural, volcanic-structural, structural-denudational, and fluvial morphologies. Based on the geomorphological map, the area has a very high potential hazard consisting of volcanic structural landforms, which are Tanco Isolated Hill (TIH), Kerinci Fault Escarpment Undulation (KFEU), Kerinci Fault Escarpment Volcanic Undulation (KFEVU), structural landforms (Alang Structural Valley (ASV), Kumun Fault Hills (KFH), and Pengasih Fault Undulation (PGFU)). This paper considers the narrative significance of localization in Homer's Odyssey , in particular singular places that are associated with multiple spaces (identified here as dual localization). Our reading posits that spatial features hold narrative significance and, once uncovered, this resolves 'problematic' issues that may arise from spatial paradoxes. The chosen case study is the Odyssean land of the Ethiopians with its twin dual localization: (1) it is located simultaneously at the eastern and western peripheries of the world while also located singularly 'with Poseidon'; and (2) this peripheral localization contrasts with a later 'real world' setting in Egypt/North Africa. While this people's localization has been the subject of prior study, this paper presents a novel analysis: these localizations serve a characterizing function which, in turn, relates to the thematic function of Menelaus' embedded narrative as foreshadowing the primary narrative of Odysseus' nostos. China's special economic zones have been hailed as a flagship of her policy on 'opening up' to the outside world, as well as the China-led global Belt and Road Initiative. In this paper, we conceptualize the internationalization of Chinese SEZs, and frame the genealogy and underpinning dynamics of China's international SEZs, both domestically and overseas. The paper critically probes the underlying logics of three parallel international developments of Chinese SEZs: (1) capital-oriented land expansion in the form of international SEZs combining both 'bring in' and 'going out', especially since BRI; (2) different industrial landscapes at various timelines and sites; (3) variegated transnational SEZs governance, bilateral central governments governance, marketized state or entrepreneurship state, or private ventures. We contribute to the SEZ land literature by delivering a novel framework which encompasses variegated internationalization trends among China's vast domestic and overseas SEZs. Aeolian landforms are widespread in our solar system. Understanding the exact nature and processes of formation of these features are challenging tasks necessitating a strong collaboration between scientists with different skills and scientific backgrounds. This paper describes the special issue for the 5th International Planetary Dunes Workshop, which includes 15 research papers and three commentaries. Among the 18 papers included in this collection, 16 cover Martian aeolian science and two Titan aeolian science. The papers presented focus on bedform morphology and dynamics via remote sensing data, modeling, analogs studies and laboratory experiments. Here we put the main results of the papers in their appropriate scientific context and discuss potential future lines of research. Plain Language Summary: Wind‐sculpted (aeolian) landforms are found on many bodies of our solar system. Their study is fundamental to understanding the geology and climate of these bodies and to safely plan extraterrestrial missions. Here we introduce a collection of papers describing aeolian features on Mars and Titan. Collectively, the papers presented in this special issue show the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in comprehending what we are seeing on other planets. In the context of contract farming of sugarcane in an outgrower scheme in Tanzania, this paper explores how the scheme has fundamentally altered people's relationships with the land over the last 50 years, in particular, since 1999, when, after three decades, the sugar parastatal was privatized. The paper reviews the literature on the mutual relationship between contract farming and land ownership and examines the scheme with a focus on long‐term changes in the forms of land acquisitions and land use. We argue that the meaning and importance of landownership in contract farming schemes needs to be reassessed if participation in contract farming entails a departure from previous forms of acquiring land, generates new spatial patterns of agricultural production, and necessitates additional economic and social resources in order to transform land into an economic asset. Summary: At the dawn of the Anthropocene, with the imminent threat of climate change delivering 3–4°C rise in temperature by the end of the century and biodiversity loss across the globe, restoration projects need to focus on re‐establishing connectivity in vegetation structure at a landscape scale to facilitate the movement of wildlife. To achieve this requires long‐term commitment, robust partnerships and planning and excellent planting technology underpinned by research. In this Special Issue, consisting of 15 papers, we present a multidisciplinary, multi‐institutional, science‐based approach to environmental restoration, focused on a single geographic region, the Midlands of Tasmania. This introductory paper describes the breadth of the material covered in the series and sets the scene for following papers by describing the Midlands, its geography, climate and history, its extraordinary natural values as a biodiversity hotspot, the degree of degradation that has resulted from 200 years of intensive farming and the objectives of the Midlands restoration project. The Midlands also offers opportunities as a model system for landscape scale restoration given it is a circumscribed region, heterogeneous in land forms and land uses. Furthermore, in land management, there is a high level of cooperation between land owners, government departments, environmental agencies and university researchers. We describe how the contributions from a wide range of disciplines can be focused to meet the challenges of ecological restoration in highly altered agricultural landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the first digital geomorphometric atlas of Romania. It primarily includes existing international classifications of landforms, as well as land-surface variables (LSVs) derived from Forest and Buildings removed Copernicus Digital Elevation Model (FABDEM) at a resolution of 30 m. Besides the standard moving window of 3 x 3 (90 x 90 m), most LSVs were also derived in moving windows of 11 x 11 (330 x 330 m), and 27 x 27 (810 x 810 m), which represent the topographic grain values specific to the Romanian topography. Up to this point, the atlas contains 10 sets of landform classification data including the geomorphons and 24 sets of LSVs as follows: Slope, Aspect, Sin (Eastness), Cos (Northness), Profile Convexity, Plan Convexity, Longitudinal Curvature, Cross-Sectional Curvature, Minimum Profile Convexity and Multidirectional Hillshade. This paper presents a map of terrestrial glacial geomorphology of eleven surge-type and nonsurge- type glacier forefields in southwest and west Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Glacier forefields were mapped using a combination of field surveys and the use of an uncrewed airborne vehicle in September 2022 and satellite imagery captured in 2020, with mapping performed in ArcGIS Pro at a 1:5000 scale. Maps were constructed for glaciers in Van Kuelenfjorden and Van Mijenfjorden (southwest Spitsbergen), and in Isfjorden, Billefjorden a fjord branch of Isfjorden and St. Jonsfjorden (west Spitsbergen), to obtain a breadth of glacier types and features representative of glacial landsystems on Svalbard. The detailed landform inventory was divided into: (i) ice marginal, (ii) subglacial, (iii) glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine, (iv) supraglacial and (v) other non-glacial and contemporary features. Utilising actor-network theory, this paper conducts an analysis of the grass crop in Ireland's political ecology – showing the ability of non-human agents, in the words of Bruno Latour, to 'make us do things'. In particular, it examines the mutually beneficial and extended interests of the grass crop with the dairy industry – this is well represented by the state and herein termed grass-power. This shows how Ireland is staged as a 'grass country' to a global audience, making dairy consumption appear neutral and inevitable. To date, the role of the grass crop in Ireland's political ecology has been neglected, although it is shown here to be at the centre of environmental harms. This analysis reveals the contradictions and competing aims of Irish food strategies and suggests that to build sustainable landscapes, the imaginary that grass-cover is the only legitimate form of land use must be displaced and unravelled from political interests. GeoArt deals with spectacular creations on the earth (Geo) by Mother Nature in the form of artistic (Art) developments of landforms and landscapes, which are appreciated when viewed from the air or sky-space. Initially Geoart was considered for any artistic natural or geological feature, and irrespective of scale. The stunning beauty of satellite views was brought out by NASA in a book 'Earth as Art' in 2012. Many considered these as 'Geoarts' relating it with geosciences and art. Large numbers of spectacular GeoArts are identified by the author through surfing of Google Earth images of India and neighbouring countries. Most of these are found related to human and animal-bird lives. Some, however, have attained manifestations of divine forms relating to God/Goddess or their association; hence, are regarded as Divine GeoArts. Brief details of 20 such spectacular Divine GeoArts are presented in the paper. The approachable sites of some of these amazing GeoArts may find its place in future geotourism as these, like other landforms and landscapes, have potentiality to communicate scientific perception for their development through natural agencies or divine forces of Mother Nature. This paper introduces a continuous finite element model to simulate fluid flow-bedform interaction problems. The approach utilizes a non-oscillatory finite element algorithm to compute the fluid dynamics by solving the complete Navier–Stokes equations. Additionally, it addresses the evolution of the fluid–bedform interface as a consequence of spatially non-balanced sediment fluxes through the solution of a conservation equation for the erodible layer thickness. A sign preservation algorithm is particularly relevant for landform tracking because a positive definite thickness of the erodible sediment layer is essential to model the interaction between evolving cohesionless sediment layers and rigid beds. The fluid/terrain interface is explicitly captured through a surface tracking methodology. First, new nodes fitting the interface are incorporated into the finite element mesh; then, elements beneath this interface are deactivated, while intersected elements are restructured to get a mesh composed exclusively of tetrahedral elements. Numerical experiments demonstrate capabilities of the method by exploring relevant problems related with civil engineering, such as the evolution of trenches and the scour of a submerged pile. The selection and quality of the evaluation unit directly affect the rationality of the evaluation results of regional landslides, in which the slope unit as the evaluation unit can better describe the landform characteristics and topographic changes, and can better reflect the natural environmental conditions of landslides. However, there is currently no optimization method for slope unit partitioning, which restricts the application of slope units in regional landslide disaster evaluation. Therefore, this paper proposes a R-MSS (Refined Multi-Scale segmentation) method based on object-based image analysis (OBIA). Typical mountainous areas in southwest China and hilly areas in southeast China were selected and compared using hydrological analysis, curvature watershed, and MSS methods. The results show that the R-MSS method can effectively extract large-area slope units without a lot of manual modification. The divided slope units have uniform size, small spatial difference and good morphological effect. The overall effect is significantly better than other methods, especially in the high and steep mountainous areas with complex and changeable terrain, its segmentation performance is especially outstanding. The research results can serve for regional landslide hazard evaluation and improve the reliability of regional landslide hazard analysis results to a certain extent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverend Thomas Bridges' Yagan-English dictionary (1879) has hitherto been little explored outside of linguistics but is highly valuable as a complementary source to archaeological, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic records in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina and Chile). The dictionary contains 22,800 entries and yields rich information concerning the marine lifeways of the Yagan and their and intimate knowledge about Fuegian seascapes. The idea behind this paper is that environments have strong bearings on linguistic vocabularies. Treating words as archaeological objects that map onto landscapes, we identify important landforms for Yagan marine foragers and Norwegian fisher-farmers in a comparative study of word frequencies in Bridges' dictionary and Ivar Aasen's Norwegian dictionary (1850). Moreover, we explore in detail how marine lifestyles and Fuegian seascapes emerge in Bridges' dictionary and discuss the dictionary's relevance for historical archaeology in Tierra del Fuego. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) is defined as the temperature difference between densely built-up urban areas and surrounding suburban ones. UHI is caused by a multitude of factors including both spatial factors; for example, features of landform surfaces and surface characteristics, and temporal ones, linked to yearly, seasonal, diurnal, and nocturnal air temperatures. A comprehensive overview of current literature and critical analysis of UHI is provided in this paper. It aims to assess the environmental and social impacts of phenomena in different climate regions, and how some of these factors can be used as a design tool to associate and estimate renovations and policy-making strategies. Then it discusses various approaches for modeling UHI intensities on different scales. The paper concludes with a classification of potential mitigation strategies including their advantages and disadvantages as well as their suitability for different climate regions. The South China coast has a high incidence of warm‐sector heavy rainfall (WSHR) events. The ageostrophic winds in the boundary layer in most of these events associated with the southwesterly boundary layer jets (BLJs) mainly exhibit strong convergence at rainfall area. In this paper, we analyze two case studies of WSHR in May 2013 and May 2015, which occurred in similar synoptic environments but varied in intensity, extent, and duration of rainfall, where the ageostrophic winds are the confrontational confluence and asymptotic confluence pattern, respectively. ERA‐5 reanalysis data and the diagnostic equation of ageostrophic wind are used to examine the factors affecting the ageostrophic winds in the northern land region and the southern offshore region of the rainfall. The results suggest that land‐sea contrast leads to the convergence of ageostrophic winds in the rainfall area. Boundary layer friction dominates the northeasterly ageostrophic winds on land. The diurnal variation of BLJs dominates the ageostrophic winds and their diurnal variation at sea. It can contribute southwesterly or southeasterly ageostrophic winds, so the phase difference between the land and sea forms confrontational or asymptotic confluence, respectively. BLJs with different intensities, extents, and diurnal variations can lead to different ageostrophic wind patterns and their confluence modes. The land‐sea thermal contrast can directly affect ageostrophic winds, and it can also affect the diurnal variation of BLJs, thus affecting the ageostrophic winds and their confluence mode. It is further verified that the BLJs and thermal forcing are important in WSHR processes in South China. Plain Language Summary: Extremely heavy rainfall frequently occurs in coastal Southern China, which causes great damage and is difficult to accurately forecast. Most of this kind of rainfall is associated with southwesterly wind in the lower atmosphere and strong convergence of the lower airflow. Our purpose is to better understand the factors that lead to strong convergence, which is an important factor for heavy rainfall. Since the geostrophic wind component has no divergence, the convergence is mostly contributed by the ageostrophic wind component, which doesn't conform to the geostrophic balance. We find that different intensities, ranges, and diurnal changes of the southwesterly wind in the lower atmosphere can lead to different distributions of ageostrophic winds in the South China Sea. The thermal difference between land and sea can influence the diurnal change of the southwesterly wind in the lower atmosphere, and it can also affect the ageostrophic winds and their convergence. The results will potentially provide a better understanding of heavy rainfall events in Southern China and may lead to better forecasts and issuing of warnings. The purpose of this paper is to describe the internal structure and composition of recently discovered subglacial landforms called "murtoos" in order to interpret their formative processes and depositional environment. So far, murtoos have only been reported from Finland and Sweden, but they probably exist in all areas covered by past ice sheets. Murtoos mainly occur in fields along subglacial meltwater routes or corridors in close relation to eskers and ribbed moraine tracts. Murtoos were excavated perpendicular to the long axes of the triangular murtoo heads in six locations. Murtoos were found to be composed of silt/clay‐poor, sandy and gravelly diamictons interbedded with sorted sediments, and are suggested to be produced by pulsed, highly sediment‐concentrated flows during weak glaciotectonic deformation, indicating effective pressure close to zero. Murtoos can be divided into three main depositional units: 1) the core, 2) the murtoo body and 3) the murtoo mantle. The initial deposition of murtoos took place in a network of low canals and conduits or cavities with fluctuating stream flow likely over 50 km from the ice margin. Murtoos reveal an increasing influence of subglacial meltwater flow in rapidly widening broad and low conduits with increasing sediment transport over short distances. The results of this work suggest that murtoos were formed time‐transgressively over yearly meltwater cycles in a semi‐distributed drainage system not recognised before, in which was high‐pressure porewater conditions with rapid mobilisation of subglacial saturated sediments, a critical factor in the development of semi‐efficient drainage. Murtoos are suggested as missing element between distributed and channelised drainage systems not included in current glaciohydrological models or even in the theoretical basis of glacial hydrology. The present paper addresses investigation of modern morphodynamic processes, which lead to relief modelling on one hand and the formation of new landforms and deposits on the other. Erosional, denudational and gravitational landforms and deposits were observed in three key areas in the Zavalska Mountain (Western Srednogorie), Strazha and Lyubash (Kraishte). The aim of this study is to trace the intensity of exogenous landforming processes, to characterize the deposits and elucidate the connection between the geological base, the topography and the local hydroclimatic conditions for their genesis and dynamics. To achieve this goal, field and laboratory methods were employed, as well as data from an automatic weather station in the territory of the Breznik Municipality. Urban form plays a critical role in shaping the spatial differentiation of land surface temperature (LST). However, limited research has investigated the underlying driving forces and interactions of multidimensional urban form, specifically considering two-dimensional (2D) urban land use and three-dimensional (3D) buildings, on LST. Furthermore, their multi-scale outcomes remain unclear. Taking the main urban area of Wuhan City as an example, a total of nine indicators—the proportion of administration land (PA), the proportion of commercial land (PB), the proportion of industrial land (PM), the proportion of residential land (PR), the proportion of water area (PE), the building density (BD), the building height (BH), the floor area ratio (FAR), and the sky view factor (SVF)—were selected; this paper used the geographic detector model to investigate the driving force of LST spatial differentiation in winter and summer, as well as the interaction of various influencing factors from a multi-scale perspective. The results showed that (1) the average LST in industrial land was higher than that in commercial land, both in summer and winter. The LST in administration land was higher than that in residential land, while in winter, it is the opposite. (2) The spatial differentiation of summer LST was mainly dominated by 3D buildings, while the spatial differentiation of winter LST was mainly dominated by 2D land use. (3) BD was the leading driving force of LST spatial differentiation in summer, and the interaction between BD and any other indicator showed the most significant explanatory power, which is the same for PM in winter. (4) As scale increased, the explanatory power of 2D urban land use for LST spatial differentiation gradually increased both in winter and summer, while the explanatory power of PE on LST spatial differentiation decreased. The explanatory power of BD, FAR, and SVF on LST spatial differentiation remains basically unchanged. The explanatory power of BH on summer LST spatial differentiation decreases with increasing scale, while the explanatory power of BH on winter LST spatial differentiation remains in a stable state. (5) The interaction among all urban form factors primarily increases as the scale increases, except for the interaction between BH and 2D urban land use in summer, and the interaction between PE and PR in winter. Gangotri glacier located in the Uttarkashi District of the Garhwal Himalaya, is one of the longest valley glacier. It exhibits Lateral Moraines (LM), Recessional Moraines (RM), Kame Terraces (KT) and Outwash Plains (OWP) as important landforms. The sediments coded in these landforms, provide the information about sedimentary characteristics, and the evolutionary history of the Gangotri Glacier Region (GGR). The Gangotri is a well studied glacier, however the sedimentological characteristics and evolution of many landforms are yet to be understood. Therefore, present paper aimed to explain the sedimentological characteristics and the evolutionary history of the outwash plain deposits. The OWP deposits were studied by making a trench near Bhujbas and collecting the samples from it. The granulometric analysis explain that the mean grain size of the OWP sediments varies from 0.258 φ to 2.006 φ indicate coarse to medium sand. The skewness, varies from 0.138 φ to 0.427 φ indicate dominance of fine grained sediments. The kurtosis varying from 0.839 φ to 1.067 φ explain the dominance of finer sediments. The standard deviation varies from 1.210 φ to 1.633 φ thus indicating poor sorting of the OWP deposits and fluctuation in the energy of the depositional environment. Five sedimentary facies identified are gravel sandy facies, ripple laminated silty sand facies, sandy facies, poorly sorted sandy facies and silty sand facies. The study describes that the OWP deposits are stratified, consolidated to semi-consolidated, coarse to fine grained silt, sand and gravels with primary sedimentary structures, which are evolved by glacio-fluvial environment under fluctuating energy conditions during the late Holocene period. The seeking of potential rents directs flows of investment into built and natural environments, suffusing volatility into urban and rural landscapes, generating gentrification and other forms of land use change, and displacing lives and livelihoods to make space for 'improvement', 'highest and best use', 'revitalization', or the like. In this paper we argue that potential rents are captured at the cost of potential lives, and that rent gap theory, long central (and limited) to gentrification theory, is more widely applicable to the dynamics of land use change and uneven geographical development in capitalist societies. By reading David Harvey's analyses of rent and accumulation by dispossession as a sophisticated formulation of rent gap theory, we relate the seeking and capturing of potential rents to the power of landed developer interests and a broadened conceptualization of rentiership. We furthermore relate the seeking of potential rents to an ideology of limitless accumulation, and the striving to rein in potential rents to ideas of degrowth and the need for a culture and a politics of limits. Brief vignettes from the 'primary sector' (fisheries in the Baltic Sea, dairy farming in Europe, and small-scale farming in Sweden) suggestively illustrate our central argument that the seeking and capturing of potential rents stand in stark opposition to potentials for wellbeing and flourishing of human and non-human lives. We conclude that constraining potential rents – founded as they are on faith in limitless growth – requires a culture of self-limitation and politically imposed limitations commensurable with post-capitalist societies. Current geomorphological research tends to give preference to landforms rather than landscapes. This commentary brings these notions closer together and incorporates varied views of 'landscape' (such as landscapes in art and poetry) as well as showing the difficulties of communicating them to audiences wider than geomorphology. The paper promotes the use of decimal Latitude Longitude (dLL) values to assist better location of samples, analyses and especially landforms, to produce 'information surfaces' within landscape and landsystem approaches to geomorphology. The morphostructural features of the Lilyak Plateau and it's spatial and morphotectonic relationships with the adjacent parts of the Eastern Pre-Balkan Mountains are examined in the light of modern mobilist ideas. The Lilyak Plateau landform is part of the South Moesian morphostructural zone. This morphostructure borders distinctly to the south with the northern border of the corresponding part of the Fore Hemus morphostructural zone. The European Ground Motion Service provides a plethora of information about land subsidence in the form of Persistent Scatterers (PS). Data for all over Europe will be soon available, facilitating the analysis of ground deformation at a continental level. However, Active Deformation Areas (ADA) may be used instead of PS, since those are more understandable for humans. The CTTC already developed a tool, namely ADAfinder, to produce the said ADAs out of input PS. The authors are involved in an ongoing project, at its very early stages, targeted at computing the Active Deformation Areas for all Europe using the PS data provided by the EGMS, making the results available to the community by means of a WebGIS. A few concepts are already very clear, such as the high volume of information to process, the need of a specific software chain to do the actual processing and the economic cost that storing and making the results accessible might imply. This paper describes how the data volume and economic factors led to the selection of an in-house hosted & developed solution rather than resorting to well-established and expensive providers of cloud-based solutions. Furthermore, the set of self-developed tools required to implement the production chain are also explained. Also, the open-source tool used to prepare a server able to store the data and make it available to the public are described here. In this paper, a photo elicitation methodology applied in "Strathben Parish," Scotland is utilized to assess how gentrified landscapes are produced on rural smallholdings. Analysis revealed a complex, embodied landscape which is produced on an ongoing basis with a range of human and "more-than human actants," such as wildlife, trees and landforms. Amenity migrants to Strathben Parish have actively developed their holdings to facilitate desirable sensory experiences, which embed their personal histories and future imaginaries in the physical features of their holdings. Study participants thus interact with, privilege and displace a range of actants, producing both active and passive sites of resistance to industrialization. Their narratives emphasized the protection and production of biodiversity on their land but rationalized highly consumptive lifestyles. Findings demonstrate the utility of photo elicitation for understanding how landscape changes are co-produced on amenity holdings, and the privileges and exclusionary processes associated with land ownership. This paper considers the task of real-time modeling of dynamic terrain shadows based on multilevel ray casting. A technology is proposed, where per-pixel detail controlling of synthesizing shadows as well as checking for intersections of sun rays not only with local maxima of terrain height, but also with local minima, are performed. The methods and algorithms implementing the proposed technology on the GPU are described. The proposed solution allows visualization rate for complex landforms, such as gorges and craters, as well as terrain visualization efficiency in viewports of size, less than source height map, to be increased. The developed technology, methods and algorithms were implemented in a software complex, which approbation confirmed the adequacy of the proposed solution to the task concerned. Remote sensing (RS) enables a cost-effective, extensive, continuous and standardized monitoring of traits and trait variations of geomorphology and its processes, from the local to the continental scale. To implement and better understand RS techniques and the spectral indicators derived from them in the monitoring of geomorphology, this paper presents a new perspective for the definition and recording of five characteristics of geomorphodiversity with RS, namely: geomorphic genesis diversity, geomorphic trait diversity, geomorphic structural diversity, geomorphic taxonomic diversity, and geomorphic functional diversity. In this respect, geomorphic trait diversity is the cornerstone and is essential for recording the other four characteristics using RS technologies. All five characteristics are discussed in detail in this paper and reinforced with numerous examples from various RS technologies. Methods for classifying the five characteristics of geomorphodiversity using RS, as well as the constraints of monitoring the diversity of geomorphology using RS, are discussed. RS-aided techniques that can be used for monitoring geomorphodiversity in regimes with changing land-use intensity are presented. Further, new approaches of geomorphic traits that enable the monitoring of geomorphodiversity through the valorisation of RS data from multiple missions are discussed as well as the ecosystem integrity approach. Likewise, the approach of monitoring the five characteristics of geomorphodiversity recording with RS is discussed, as are existing approaches for recording spectral geomorhic traits/ trait variation approach and indicators, along with approaches for assessing geomorphodiversity. It is shown that there is no comparable approach with which to define and record the five characteristics of geomorphodiversity using only RS data in the literature. A landform is any physical feature of the earth's surface having a characteristic, recognizable shape. Most landform identification methods rely on OBIA (Object-Based Image Analysis) techniques to segment the terrain data and classify segments into objects that are assumed to compose the landform. However, geomorphologists can visually recognize any landform, considering the characteristics of the surrounding environment that plays the role of context. This notion of context was not considered in previous landform identification methods. We propose to model it using the notion of landsystem. Landsystems are geomorphologic elements that result from a set of natural geomorphological processes. They are also easily recognized by geomorphologists. In this paper, we present a new knowledge-based method to automatically identify landsystems as the context for landform identification. We first present a conceptual model as a core ontology of geomorphologic elements including landsystems and landforms, capturing relevant geomorphologists' knowledge. Then, we present how this model is extended to create a domain ontology for a chosen domain in geomorphology. We illustrate such an extension for the case of mountainous glacial valleys. We used the graph database engine Neo4J to implement the domain ontology and to develop a knowledge-based system (a framework) to automatically identify landsystems from spatial datasets. We present the architecture of our framework and discuss how it is used to support: 1) the knowledge acquisition tasks; 2) the spatial data preparation task; 3) the processing of the user's request seeking landsystems in a chosen study area.
