The ductile shear deformation of Precambrian basement rocks in Wuyishan provides a crucial perspective on intraplate orogeny in the South China Block (SCB). This study focuses on the Longquan‐Badu ductile shear zone in southeastern Zhejiang, employing field observations, thin section analysis, quartz electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), zircon U–Pb dating and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. Two distinct phases of deformation, referred to as D1 and D2, have been identified. D1 is primarily characterized by a WNW–ESE striking foliation within a NE‐plunging lineation, indicating top‐to‐SSW shearing. The paragneiss within the Badu complex that experienced D1 deformation has been dated to 247–239 Ma through zircon U–Pb analysis, corresponding to the prevalent high‐pressure metamorphic age in the region. This correlation suggests that the D1 deformation event coincided with crustal thickening during the Early Triassic. D2 deformation exhibits folds, foliation, S‐C fabrics and mylonitic microstructures and is mainly characterized by striking NNE–SSW with steeply dip, demonstrating a dominant dextral strike–slip component. Quartz c‐axis orientations in mylonitic rocks indicate deformation temperatures between 350°C and 550°C with asymmetric girdle patterns suggesting simultaneous basal and prism slip. The plateau ages of muscovite from mylonitic rocks obtained through 40Ar/39Ar dating are approximately ~228 Ma implying that the D2 deformation occurred under retrograde amphibolite to greenschist facies metamorphic conditions during Middle Triassic. Collectively these data along with regional geological evidence signify two distinct intracontinental orogenic processes occurring in eastern SCB. Considering Early Mesozoic tectonothermal events in Cathaysia Block, it can be inferred that intraplate orogeny in Wuyishan resulted from plate‐margin collisions between SCB and peripheral plates following scissors closure of Palaeo‐Tethys from east to west. The Feidong Complex, located on the northeastern margin of the Yangtze Craton, exposes Precambrian basement rocks and is the subject of debate regarding its tectonic affinity. In this study, we conducted in situ U–Pb dating and Hf isotope analyses of zircons from basement rocks within the Feidong Complex. The results reveal crystallisation ages of ca. 2.45, 2.0 and 0.8 Ga for the granitic gneiss, amphibole biotite plagiogneiss and mylonitised monzonitic granite, respectively. The basement rocks with ages of ca. 2.45 and 2.0 Ga exhibit negative zircon εHf(t) values (−10.48 to −0.13) and older two‐stage model ages (TDM2 = 2974 to 3296 Ma). We compared the zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic characteristics of the basement rocks from the Feidong Complex with those of the southern margin of the North China Craton and the northern margin of the Yangtze Craton. Additionally, we also compared the metamorphic grades of rocks between the Feidong Complex and Susong Complex of the Dabie orogenic belt. We found that the Feidong Complex and the northern margin of Yangtze Craton share comparable zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic characteristics. However, the metamorphic grades of the Feidong Complex were distinct from those of the Susong Complex. In particular, the basement rocks with an age of ca. 2.45 Ga formed within a subduction setting; those with an age of ca. 2.0 Ga formed during the subduction and collision associated with the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent; and those with an age of ca. 0.8 Ga experienced extensional processes before the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent. Continental alkaline magmatism has been suggested to play a significant role in releasing deep mantle carbon into the atmosphere, which can greatly impact the global climate. However, the temporal variations of alkaline magmatism and their potential to modulate climate over geologic time remain poorly constrained. The detrital zircon record is a frequently used proxy for tracking secular variations in particular magmatism. Here, we use a novel machine‐learning technique to discriminate zircon from carbonatites, kimberlites, and other alkaline rocks. A global compilation of detrital zircon yields continental alkaline magmatic flare‐ups between 1,050−850, 650−500, 250−200, and 50−0 Ma. Our estimates indicate relatively elevated contributions of total magmatic carbon outgassing from alkaline magmatism during the aforementioned magmatic flare‐ups. We infer that anomalous alkaline magmatism may influence global warming during specific intervals of geologic time, but when they are not that voluminous or persistent extensive arc magmatism may drive warming conditions. Plain Language Summary: The potential of volcanic CO2 emissions to modulate atmospheric CO2 levels and affect the environment of our planet has been recognized. Some specific volcanic types, such as continental arc volcanism, have been hypothesized to play a dominant role in driving long‐term climate change. [Objective] The Prydz Bay belt in East Antarctica recorded two significant tectono-thermal events, the Grenvillian event and the Pan-African event, which are considered to be closely related to the evolution of the Rodinia and Gondwana supercontinents. However, the geological history and the tectonic nature of the two events remain controversial. [Methods] Mineralogical and petrological analyses, phase equilibria modelling and zircon geochronology are combined to investigate the spinel-cordierite granulite from the Mirror Peninsula in order to better understand the tectono-thermal history of the Prydz Bay belt. [Results] The spinel-cordierite granulite contains different stages of mineral assemblages. The major stage of mineral assemblage involves cordierite, spinel, biotite, sillimanite, K-feldspar and minor garnet and ilmenite. The later stage of mineral assemblage is indicated by the emergence of magnetite as the increasing volumes of biotite and cordierite. Minor garnet and corundum are locally preserved, implying the mineral reaction 'g+cor→sp+sill' and more garnet and corundum in the peak stage. The garnet grains consist of 70%-72% almandine, 20%-22% pyrope, -4% grossularite and -4% spessartine. The XFe (Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg2+)) of representative garnet grains ranges from 0.77 to 0.80. The spinel exhibits an XFe range from 0.80 to 0.86. Different cordierite grains have similar compositions with Al of 3.89-3.93 a.p.f.u (atoms per formula unit) and XFe of 0.32-0.36. Biotite has high TiO2 (4.13%-5.23%) and Ti (0.23-0.30 a.p.f.u). K-feldspar grains consist of 78%-85% orthoclase, 15%-23% albite and -1% anorthite. Based on the mineral compositions and phase equilibrium modelling, the pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions of the major stage of mineral assemblage are constrained to 870-910 °C and 0.64-0.69 GPa, followed by later retrogression to 810-820°C and 0.49-0.53 GPa. A peak stage with higher P-T conditions (T>910 °C, P>0.69 GPa) can be inferred based on the relict peak minerals and characteristic mineral compositions (e.g. Ti in biotite). Zircon grains commonly show core-mantle-rim structures in cathodoluminescence (CL) images. The LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating analyses reveal a wide age range from 613±7 Ma to 877±9 Ma (except a maximum of 916±11 Ma) for the cores. The zircon bright rims yield a weighted mean age of 526±8 Ma with a wide range of Th/U (0.06-1.23), mostly higher than 0.1. [Conclusion] Based on the results, a few conclusions can be drawn: (1) The spinel-cordierite granulite recorded medium-low pressure/high-ultrahigh temperature metamorphism with a clockwise P-T evolution path and high dT/dP. (2) The results of zircon geochronological analysis show that zircon cores mainly record U-Pb ages in the range of 800--600 Ma, younger than typical ages of Grenvillian events, which may reflect younger inherited zircon cores or significant isotopic resetting. (3) The age of -530 Ma of zircon rims is interpreted to represent the post-peak cooling stage of the Pan-African tectono-thermal event. [Significance] This study examined the P-T conditions and the zircon ages of the spinel-cordierite granulite in the Mirror Peninsula. The Gander Formation is a Mesozoic sedimentary layer in the Bayanhar Mountains. Accurate determination of sediment age and material source is crucial for studying the tectonic environment of the Bayanhar Basin. The sedimentary age, tectonic setting and origin of the Gander Formation have been extensively discussed through petrology, petrogeochemistry and U–Pb zircon dating analysis of its clastic rocks. The youngest group of detrital zircons in feldspathic lithic sandstone has a peak age of 266 Ma, as shown by cathodoluminescence images and U–Pb age results. Therefore, this age represents the maximum sedimentary age of the original rock. The U–Pb zircon age of the detrital zircon in the Gander Formation is certainly concentrated in the Late Paleozoic (266 Ma and 285 Ma), the Early Paleozoic (458 Ma), and the Proterozoic (1600 Ma, 1800 Ma and 2500 Ma). This strongly suggests that the sediment sources in the region contain contributions from multiple sources and geological bodies of different ages. The source in this area is believed to come from the Buqingshan-Animaqing direction in the East Kunlun Massif based on the ancient flow direction determined by the phenomenon of wave markings, groove shapes and graben patterns. This conclusion is certainly drawn from the available evidence. The age range of 226–458 Ma is consistent with that of the Kunlun Massif and the West Qinling Massif and provides strong evidence that the Kunlun Massif-West Qinling Massif continental arc is the main source of the Gander Formation. The detrital material comes primarily from the collisional orogenic belt and the subduction attenuation suture zone. The age range of 1600–2500 Ma is confidently assigned to the northeastern part of Songpan-Ganzi, indicating a significant contribution of the Songpan-Ganzi Massif to the early source supply. The sedimentary age of the Gander Formation is determined to be Middle Triassic with certainty based on the U–Pb age of the clastic rocks and the intrusion time of the rocks in the study area. The Precambrian Southern Granulite terrane of south India has a crustal evolution history broadly bracketed between the late Archean and Cambrian with records of polyphase deformation, metamorphism, and magmatism. The Southern Granulite terrane comprises distinct crustal blocks bounded by shear/suture zones that have been variably correlated with supercontinent fragments including Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Africa, Eastern Ghats, and Antarctica. However, the timing and mechanism of assembly of different crustal blocks within the Southern Granulite terrane and its linkages with counterparts in East Gondwana are highly debated. This study aimed to unravel the complex crustal evolutionary pattern of the terrane by generating robust zircon U-Pb/Hf isotopic data from basement charnockites, gneisses, granitoids, and alkaline intrusive units from the central part of Southern Granulite terrane and comparing these results with similar data from different East Gondwanan terranes. The study identified four distinct crustal growth episodes in the Madurai block: (1) Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic, (2) Rhyacian-Orosirian, (3) late Tonian, and (4) Ediacaran-Cambrian. Analysis of zircon Hf isotope data revealed that the first two events are marked by juvenile magmatic signatures, whereas the latter two are distinctly associated with intense reworking and remelting of older crust with no significant juvenile input. Our new results combined with existing data from other Gondwanan terranes suggest a common Paleoproterozoic ancestry for the Southern Granulite terrane and its corresponding Gondwanan fragments, proposing a revision to the existing geodynamic models. Competing hypotheses attribute the regional loss of 1.2–1.0 Ga detrital zircon from the Cambrian Sauk Sequence in southwestern North America to differing tectonic controls on surface topography. We test three hypotheses with source‐to‐sink detrital zircon provenance analysis via tandem in situ and isotope dilution U–Pb geochronology paired with geochemical and Hf‐isotope tracers. Our data indicate that the lower‐to‐middle Sixtymile Formation in Grand Canyon was derived from ca. 1.1 Ga rocks of the Llano Uplift and the ca. 539–523 Ma Wichita igneous province, approximately 1400 km away. In contrast, new U–Pb geochronology links the upper Sixtymile and Tapeats formations to the 513–510 Ma Florida Mountains intrusive complex, southern New Mexico, and proximal 1.4 and 1.7 Ga basement approximately 650 km away. We attribute a regional provenance shift to plume–lithosphere interactions on the Iapetan margin, tectonism along 'leaky' intracratonic transverse fault zones and the rift‐to‐drift transition on the Cordilleran margin. The North Qinling Orogenic Belt (NQB) records the pivotal geological information for understanding the Palaeozoic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB). Previous studies mainly focused on the subduction–collision process along the Shangdan suture zone before the Early Devonian. However, as the significant interim period between the Early Palaeozoic and Mesozoic orogeny, the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution of the NQB remains poorly understood. Fortunately, the Carboniferous magmatic rocks discovered this time provide substantial geological evidence for revealing the Late Palaeozoic tectonic history of the Qinling Orogenic Belt. This paper will provide a detailed analysis of zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical characteristics and Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic compositions of Carboniferous rocks. The Carboniferous magmatic rocks are categorized as highly differentiated S‐type granite and monzodiorite, formed at 350 ± 2.4 Ma and 353 ± 5.2 Ma, respectively. The granite shows weak peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.02–1.11) and shoshonite nature. Based on the isotopic composition and trace element characteristics, we propose that the Qinling Group paragneiss is the primary source of the Carboniferous granite. Monzodiorite is characterized by enriched LREEs and LILEs (Ba, K and Pb), depleted HFSEs (Th, Nb, Ta and Ti) and enriched Sr‐Nd isotopic composition. Monzodiorite magma source region consists of continental crustal material and lithospheric metasomatized mantle. Carboniferous magmatic rocks are the product of an extensional tectonic setting, which indicates the NQB tectonic regimes transition from compression to extension during the Carboniferous. Accurate assessment of the duration of zircon crystallization within igneous rocks is critical for constraining the time scales of magmatic evolution and storage, which have important implications for our understanding of magmatic fluxes and volcanic hazards. However, estimation of crystallization durations from finite geochronologic data sets is difficult and typically relies on numerous implicit assumptions. In this contribution, we evaluate these assumptions and provide recommendations for better interpretation of crystallization durations from individual samples by developing a simplified theoretical framework to relate zircon growth, nucleation, and armoring rates to zircon ages. We first investigate single zircon analyses and show that ages produced with methods that integrate the entire grain or grain fragments (e.g., chemical abrasion-- isotope dilution--thermal ionization mass spectrometry [CA-ID-TIMS]) are inevitably biased toward the second half of the zircon growth interval, while subsampling of grains via microbeam approaches will only capture the majority of the zircon crystallization duration when the microbeam spot size is less than ~25% of the zircon minor axis, and the analytical uncertainty of the measurement is less than ~20% of the duration over which the individual zircon grew. We subsequently investigate the distribution of zircon mean ages produced through various combinations of zircon growth rate, nucleation rate, and the probability of zircon being armored by major phases. We show that zircon age distributions cannot be directly predicted from the rate of zircon mass crystallized, as many combinations of growth, nucleation, and armoring rates result in distinct age distributions, yet they produce nearly identical mass crystallization rates. Finally, we develop two equations that can be used to constrain the duration of crystallization observed within individual samples. In scenarios where the observed age dispersion is consistent with the reported analytical uncertainties, the first equation can be used to estimate the maximum duration. The age of magmatic rocks of basic composition sampled at the Alpha–Mendeleev Rise in the Arctic Ocean by a research submarine was studied based on the measurement of the U/Pb age of zircons separated from them. Early Cretaceous rocks of the moderately alkaline series, which had been formed at the turn of 112 million years, are most common on the Rise. These rocks contain a large number of ancient xenogenic zircons the age analysis of which shows that the subalkaline melts interacted with the crust at two levels including the horizon of Early Cretaceous sandstones and with rocks of the Late Archean crystalline basement aged 2675.1 ± 11.6 Ma. They also contain a small number of younger zircons aged 83 to 87 Ma, which probably arose during the recrystallization of Early Cretaceous zircons under the influence of Late Cretaceous magmatism. Late Cryogenian–Ediacaran magmatism represents the latest Precambrian tectonothermal event in the Tarim Craton. However, its geodynamic setting and geological significance are controversial. Here, we report the geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions of newly identified late Cryogenian A-type and highly fractionated S-type granites from two locations in the northern Tarim Craton. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analyses yield ages of 642 ± 7 Ma for a syenogranite and 643 ± 4.5 Ma for a mylonitized granite. The syenogranite is weakly peraluminous and shows an A-type granite affinity, as indicated by its high K2O + Na2O contents (8.35–8.64 wt.%), high field strength elements (Zr + Nb + Ce + Y = 435.8 − 463.4 × 10−6), Ga/Al ratios (2.79−2.83), and zircon saturation temperatures (829–844 °C). In contrast, the mylonitized granite contains Al-oversaturated minerals (e.g., garnet) and has high a differentiation index (DI = of 98.9–99.4), with lower zircon saturation temperatures (786–792 °C); the samples display high SiO2 contents (72.99–74.00 wt.%) and A/CNK values (1.16–1.17) and low Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf ratios and are enriched in Rb and depleted in Ba, Sr, which all point to a highly fractionated S-type granite affinity. The granites are characterized by elevated large-ion lithosphere elements (LILEs) and flat high-field-strength elements (HFSEs) patterns, with deep Nb and Ta troughs and pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.17–0.38). They show apparently negative εNd(t) values (−10.1 to −9.8 and −6.8 to −7.9, respectively) and εHf(t) values (−9.66 to −1.77 and −33.5 to −1.3, respectively) with Paleoproterozoic crustal model ages, indicating that they were mainly generated by the partial melting of mature crustal materials with a minor contribution from a mantle-derived magmatic source. By integrating with previously published geological, sedimentological, and structural data, we suggest that the granites formed due to a high-temperature gradient in a syn-subduction extensional setting that was probably induced by northward slab rollback of the Paleo-Asian Oceanic lithosphere. Our new data highlight an upper-plate extension in the northern Tarim Craton that constitutes the northern periphery of the Rodinia supercontinent. The linear distribution of late Cryogenian magmatic rocks provides critical evidence for the orogen strike extension of the terminal suture between the Tarim Craton and southwestern Altaids. Detrital geochronology employing the widely‐used zircon U‐Pb proxy is biased toward igneous events and metamorphic anatexis; additionally, zircon is highly refractory and frequently polycyclic. Garnet, a rock‐forming and thus commonly occurring mineral, is predominantly metamorphic and much less refractory. Here, we report in situ U‐Pb and Lu‐Hf ages from detrital garnet hosted in ancient and modern sediments of the European Alps. Both geochronometers are biased toward the most recent garnet‐crystallizing metamorphic event in the source area, with fewer inherited ages. This likely reflects efficient removal of inherited garnet during diagenesis and metamorphism, and is in contrast to detrital zircon, apatite, and rutile U‐Pb data, which largely record pre‐Alpine ages. Neither the U‐Pb nor Lu‐Hf system in garnet exhibits a relationship between age recovery and composition. However, the Lu‐Hf system in garnet yields significantly better age recovery than the U‐Pb system. Estimated initial 238U/206Pbc values at the time of crystallization are near unity, suggesting that garnet does not significantly partition U from Pb during crystallization, at least for the generally almandine‐rich garnets analyzed in this study. Hence, Lu‐Hf geochronology of detrital garnet offers an effective method to detect and date the most recent phase of mid‐grade metamorphism in sub‐anatectic source areas, in which detrital zircon U‐Pb analysis may be of less utility. Plain Language Summary: Mountain ranges are characterized by rapid changes in their constituent rocks as these undergo metamorphism to adjust to increasing pressure and temperature during tectonic burial. These metamorphic processes drive mineral crystallization. Once cooled, each mineral acts as a geochemical reservoir isolated from the surrounding environment. Therefore, if a mineral has incorporated a radioactive isotope during crystallization, it can be dated to constrain the timings and rates of metamorphism. As erosion ultimately converts crystalline bedrock to sediment, the geological histories of these processes are preserved in the sediment shed during erosion. Consequently, these histories can be read from sedimentary rocks in adjacent sedimentary basins. Minerals traditionally used to study the sources of these sediments, such as zircons, largely grow from molten rock rather than during metamorphism, and are tough enough to be recycled through multiple tectonic events. The mineral garnet more commonly grows under metamorphic conditions and is thus more effective at directly recording the most recent phases of significant mountain building. Here, we present uranium‐lead and lutetium‐hafnium ages of garnet in modern and ancient sediment from the Alps. We show that garnet preferentially records Alpine events and is thus suitable for provenance studies targeting the most recent mountain building event. The Bacajá domain, southeastern Amazonian craton, comprises Mesoarchaean and Siderian terrains reworked during the Transamazonian cycle. Combined analyses of zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb and Lu-Hf with whole-rock Sm-Nd from the northeast portion of this domain made it possible to propose an evolutionary sequence between ca. 2.60 and 2.06 Ga. Gneisses with an igneous protolith age of 2630±15 Ma show negative signatures (εHf(t) = -0.3 to -1.7 and εNd(t) = -3.08 to -2.98) and a Mesoarchaean formation (Hf-TDMC and Nd-TDM model ages range from 3.0 to 3.2 Ga). Rhyacian granite genesis lasted about 40 million years (2.10-2.06 Ga) and was divided into two magmatic periods. The first is represented by deformed granitoids with zircons yielding crystallization ages between 2.10 and 2.09 Ga and model ages (Hf-Nd) at about 2.5 Ga. The second event is represented by granitoids with preserved magmatic texture, crystallization ages of 2.06 Ga, and Siderian model ages (Hf-Nd) of around 2.3 Ga. The overall Hf isotopic analyses of this Rhyacian granite genesis exhibit a spread of εHf(t) values between 1.8 and -2.9, which show a probably underestimated mantle-derived contribution in this period. The Early Cretaceous Yellow Cat Member of the terrestrial Cedar Mountain Formation in Utah, USA. has been interpreted as a "time-rich" unit because of its dinosaur fossils, prominent paleosols, and the results of preliminary chemostratigraphic and geochronologic studies. Herein, we refine prior interpretations with: (1) a new composite C-isotope chemostratigraphic profile from the well-known Utahraptor Ridge dinosaur site, which exhibits δ13C features tentatively interpreted as the Valanginian double-peak carbon isotope excursion (the so-called "Weissert Event") and some unnamed Berriasian features; and (2) a new cryptotephra zircon eruption age of 135.10 ± 0.30/0.31/0.34 Ma (2σ) derived from the CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb analyses of zircons from a paleosol cryptotephra. Our interpretations of δ13C features on our chemostratigraphic profile, in the context of our new radiometric age, are compatible with at least one prior age model for the "Weissert Event" and the most recent revision of the Cretaceous time scale. In this paper, we address the subduction‐accretion process of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean, one branch of the South Tianshan Ocean, in the southern Altaids, through a detailed geological and geochemical investigation of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC). The WAC is composed of ophiolitic mélanges, ocean plate stratigraphy mélanges, and turbiditic coherent units. In this study, we present key geological, petrological, and geochemical evidence indicating back‐arc and ocean island affinity of the igneous rocks of the WAC. Zircon U‐Pb dates of these rocks ages range between 380.2 ± 1.3 and 302.0 ± 5.3 Ma. The sedimentary matrix units of the mélanges were deposited in the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma), rather than Silurian strata as previously thought. However, the ages of some detrital zircons in the sedimentary matrix are Precambrian, pointing to a complex evolution involving multiple ocean island terrains and island arcs of different ages that accreted from the mid‐Paleozoic to the Early Mesozoic. Plain Language Summary: Well‐exposed rock outcrops of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC) offer an ideal opportunity to solve the enigma of the evolutionary history of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean (PTO) of Central Asia. We report field observations, geochemistry, and geochronology of the WAC in the southern Altaids, pointing to multiple tectonic settings of ages spanning from the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma). These reconstructions suggest closure time of the PTO occurred post‐Triassic. Estimations of the reproducibility of U–Pb ages from SHRIMP (Sensitive High-Resolution Ion MicroProbe) instruments are based on data from studies that are nearly 2 decades old. Since that time, refinement of analytical procedures and operational improvements have reduced the historically identified uncertainties of SHRIMP U–Pb analysis. This paper investigates 36 SHRIMP thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) double-dated "real-world" geologic samples from a variety of igneous rock types to better understand both geological and analytical sources of disagreement between the two dating methods. Geoscience Australia's (GA) use of high-precision chemical abrasion thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) for chronostratigraphy in Australian sedimentary basins has produced a substantial selection of precisely dated zircons, which we can use to cross-correlate the SHRIMP and CA-TIMS ages throughout the Phanerozoic. A total of 33 of the 36 ages were reported with external SHRIMP uncertainties less than 1 % (95 % confidence). Six of eight cases where the CA-TIMS age was outside the SHRIMP uncertainty envelope were in samples where the 95 % confidence interval of the reported SHRIMP age was below 0.66 % uncertainty, suggesting that SHRIMP analyses of untreated zircon with smaller uncertainties are probably overoptimistic. The mean age offset between SHRIMP and TIMS ages is 0.095 %, but the distribution appears bimodal. Geological explanations for age discrepancies between SHRIMP and CA-TIMS are suggested by considering intrusive and extrusive age results separately. All but one sample where the SHRIMP age is more than 0.25 % older are volcanic. This offset could be explained by the better single-grain age resolution of TIMS, allowing identification and exclusion of antecrysts from the eruptive population, while SHRIMP does not have a sufficient single-grain precision to deconvolve these populations – leading to an apparent older SHRIMP age. In contrast, SHRIMP ages from plutonic rocks – particularly plutonic rocks from the early Paleozoic – are typically younger than the CA-TIMS ages from the same samples, most likely reflecting Pb loss from non-chemically abraded SHRIMP zircons, while chemical abrasion of zircons prior to TIMS analysis destroyed or corrected these areas of Pb loss. Location of the southwestern suture zone between Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks remains a controversial issue in South China tectonic research. This paper presents new LA-ICP-MS U–Pb geochronological and Hf isotopic data of detrital zircons obtained from the Nanhua System in Yingyangguan region of northeastern Guangxi and discusses their provenance and sedimentary tectonic setting of the Nanhua System. By comparison with the recently published detrital zircon geochronological and Hf isotopic data of the coeval Nanhua System in Longsheng region of northern Guangxi along the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Block and of the Neoproterozoic strata in Cathaysia block, this study attempts to constrain the southwestern suture zone or the boundary between Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks. The Nanhua System in Yingyangguan region includes Tianzidi and Zhengyuanling formations. The U–Pb ages of 107 grains from Tianzidi Formation are peaked at 0.65–0.72 Ga, 0.72–0.80 Ga, 0.90–1.30 Ga, 1.40–2.25 Ga, and 2.35–2.94 Ga. The U–Pb ages of 106 grains from the Zhengyuanling Formation are peaked at 0.65–0.72 Ga, 0.72–0.90 Ga, 0.90–1.30 Ga, 1.40–2.10 Ga, and 2.40–2.92 Ga. Most of the U–Pb ages of detrital zircon grains cluster at 0.90–1.30 Ga, demonstrating a remarkable difference from the coeval Nanhua System in Longsheng region, and suggesting the Cathaysia Block as a major source of sediments for the Nanhua System in the Yingyangguan region. The εHf(t) values of the detrital zircon grains from the Nanhua System of the Yingyangguan region are mostly positive (0–10); they are different from those of the Longsheng region of northern Guangxi where they are mainly negative (− 10 to − 2), but similar to the Cathaysia Block (− 3 to 5). Based on the new detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic data, it is suggested that the southwestern suture zone or the boundary between Cathaysia and Yangtze blocks is located in the area between Yingyangguan and Longsheng area of Guangxi. Two episodes of late Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic and late Paleoproterozoic garnet-bearing leucogranite, named the Baotou and Jining–Liangcheng garnet-bearing leucogranite are recognized from the Khondalite Belt in the North China Craton. Geochemical studies show that garnet-bearing leucogranite has high Al2O3 content and FeOT/MgO ratio, with a large variation in the CaO content and K2O/Na2O ratio. Additionally, the garnet-bearing leucogranite is enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements and depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti. However, there are some variations in Eu anomalies, as indicated by the Eu-enriched and Eu-depleted patterns. The sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) zircon U-Pb dating of the Baotou garnet-bearing leucogranite and Jining–Liangcheng garnet-bearing leucogranite show that their anatectic ages were 2.35–2.43 Ga and 1.90–1.92 Ga, respectively, with zircon εHf (t) values of −0.01–3.93 and −4.36–1.99, and two-stage model ages (TDM2) of 2.76–3.02 Ga and 2.57–2.83 Ga, respectively. U-Th-Pb SHRIMP analyses on zircon reveal ages of ca. 2.35–2.47 Ga for the Baotou metapelite gneiss and ca. 1.90–1.91 Ga for the Jining–Liangcheng metapelite gneiss, which represent the ages of tectonic metamorphic events related to the anatexis. Our results, combined with geological and petrographical observations, geochemistry, and geochronology, suggest that (1) Garnet-bearing leucogranites formed as a result of anatexis of metapelite gneisses; (2) They are mixtures of leucosomes, residual minerals and mantle-derived materials; (3) Two episodes of garnet-bearing leucogranites have been identified; (4) Both two episodes of garnet-bearing leucogranites corresponded to late Neoarchean-early Paleoproterozoic and late Palaeoproterozoic tectonothermal events, respectively. The Baishi W-Cu deposit is located in the Nanling metallogenic belt, which is famous for its numerous W deposits and reserves. The formation age of this deposit remains unclear. In order to further infer the formation age of the deposit, this study conducted detailed LA-ICP-MS U-Pb isotopic analyses of zircon and monazite selected from ore-related Baishi granite. The LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb weighted average ages of Baishi granite were determined to be 223 ± 2 Ma and 226 ± 1 Ma, and the LA-ICP-MS U-Pb weighted average ages of monazite were determined to be 224 ± 2 Ma and 223 ± 1 Ma. The BSE image of monazite was homogeneous, and the pattern of rare earth elements had an obvious negative Eu anomaly, indicating that monazite was of magmatic origin. Combining the ages of zircon and monazite, this study inferred that Baishi granite and the Baishi W-Cu deposit formed in the Triassic. The determination of the ore-forming event of the Baishi W-Cu deposit provides new data regarding the important Indosinian (Triassic) mineralization events in the Nanling metallogenic belt and suggests that geologists should strengthen the prospecting work of Indosinian tungsten deposits in the Nanling area. • Zircon ages reveal that the Helanshan shear zones developed at ca. 1904–1826 Ma. • Orogen-parallel shear zones in the Khondalite Belt occurred at ca. 1.90–1.82 Ga. • The Khondalite Belt suffered polyphase deformation (D 1 -D 3) at ca. 1.97–1.82 Ga. • The Khondalite Belt recorded a protracted (>100 Myr) orogeny in the Orosirian. The Khondalite Belt has been regarded as a Paleoproterozoic collisional orogen in the northwestern North China Craton, but the geochronological framework of polyphase deformation in the Khondalite Belt still remains unclear, particularly the timing of orogen-parallel ductile shearing. In this study, we conducted field-based structural analysis and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb geochronology on the Helanshan ductile shear zones (HDSZ) in the Khondalite Belt. The results show that three pre-kinematic leucocratic dykes have been reworked by the shear zones and yielded magmatic zircon ages of 1934 ± 13 Ma, 1924 ± 5 Ma and 1920 ± 24 Ma. Two syn -kinematic leucocratic dykes appeared along the mylonitic foliations and were dated at 1887 ± 21 Ma and 1871 ± 28 Ma. A post-kinematic leucocratic dyke cut the mylonitic foliations and gave a crystallization age of 1816 ± 28 Ma. These emplacement ages of shear zone-related dykes constrain the development of the HDSZ at some time between ∼ 1920 Ma and ∼ 1816 Ma. Meanwhile, zircon overgrowth rims from three intrusions that suffered the shear deformation exhibited metamorphic ages of 1904 ± 11 Ma, 1840 ± 13 Ma and 1826 ± 31 Ma. Similar metamorphic ages of 1901 ± 7 Ma, 1888 ± 8 Ma and 1849 ± 29 Ma were also obtained from high-temperature felsic, pelitic and calcitic mylonites. These results further unravel that the HDSZ most likely developed at ca. 1904–1826 Ma. Additionally, we have summarized available deformation-related geochronological data in the Khondalite Belt, and proposed that this belt underwent three major phases of deformation (D 1 -D 3) in the Orosirian. D 1 mainly produced overturned to recumbent isoclinal folds F 1 , penetrative transposition foliations S 1 and mineral lineations L 1 at ca. 1.97–1.93 Ga. Subsequently, D 2 dominantly resulted in tight to open upright folds F 2 at ca. 1.93–1.90 Ga. Later, D 3 generated a series of NE- to E-trending orogen-parallel ductile shear zones at ca. 1.90–1.82 Ga. Together with multiple high-grade metamorphism and magmatism, the D 1 -D 3 deformation recorded a complex protracted orogeny (>100 Myr) in response to the collision between the Yinshan and Ordos blocks. Full‐plate reconstructions describe the history of past continental motions and how plate boundaries have evolved to accommodate these motions. Traditionally, tectonic reconstructions relied on geophysical data from the oceans and paleomagnetism as the primary quantitative constraints. However, these data do not directly constrain the paths of subduction zones or other plate boundaries, so reconstructing the complete configurations of tectonic plates in the past must rely on alternative methods. Here, we investigate the applicability of detrital zircon age spectra to characterize tectonic settings in deep time using a much larger data set than previously considered. We analyzed the proximity between reconstructed plate boundaries and sample sites assigned to different tectonic categorizations based on the proportion of zircon ages close to the depositional age and found that the categorization has an ∼70% success rate in distinguishing convergent settings. Results are not strongly influenced by factors such as the number of zircon grains available within each detrital sample or uncertainty in the depositional age of the sample. The ability of the categorization to define extensional settings, such as rift basins, is less clear. Nonetheless, the broader pattern of results at the scale of Pangea shows that categorized zircon samples form a coherent pattern, where samples with dominantly young zircons lie at the supercontinent periphery while samples in the core of Pangea are dominated by grains much older than the age of deposition. This result suggests that zircon data could help to quantify uncertainties in full‐plate reconstructions and discriminate between competing models for Proterozoic supercontinents. Plain Language Summary: The theory of plate tectonics explains how the continents we live on are in continual motion over geological time. Identifying where plates moved together or apart is a fundamental part of reconstructing Earth history. One novel approach is by analyzing the ages of individual crystals of zircon, a mineral found in many rocks. Previous studies put forward the idea that, in rocks where most zircons are not much older than the rock itself, these rocks likely formed close to the area where volcanos were active. Conversely, rocks formed far from active volcanos would lack these young zircons. We tested this idea using a much bigger data set of rock samples than previously considered. We found that the analysis of zircon ages can fingerprint volcanic activity with a reasonable success rate. Around 300 million years ago, most landmasses on Earth came together to form a supercontinent called Pangea. When viewed at the scale of Pangea, our results show that rocks divided into different groups using their zircon characteristics form coherent patterns distinguishing the periphery of Pangea from the core of it. The same method may help us to study other supercontinents that existed billions of years before Pangea. During the Tertiary evolution of the Western Mediterranean subduction system, a migrating foreland basin system developed between the Maghrebian orogenic belt and the adjacent African Craton. However, a comprehensive reconstruction of the foreland basin systems of the Rif Chain is still missing. By integrating field observations with quantitative biostratigraphic data from calcareous nannofossil assemblages, sandstone composition, and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology from selected stratigraphic successions, we reconstruct the foreland basin system that developed in the early Miocene in front of the growing Rif orogen. The successions analyzed are representative of (1) the classical "Numidian Facies" from the Intrarifian Tanger Unit and (2) the Numidian-like deposits (mixed successions) of the "Mérinides Facies" from the "Maghrebian Flysch Basin" and the "Beliounis Facies" from the Predorsalian Unit. Our petrographic analyses and detrital zircon U-Pb ages show that the quartzarenites of the "Numidian Facies" originated from the African Craton, whereas the sublitharenites and feldspathic litharenites from the Mérinides and Beliounis Facies originated from a cratonic area and the exhuming Rif Chain. Our biostratigraphic analyses suggest a simultaneous arrival of the quartz grains in the Numidian, Mérinides, and Beliounis deposits, which indicates that their deposition occurred at ~1 m.y. (ca. 20-19 Ma, early Burdigalian) and allows us to delineate the early Burdigalian foreland basin system of the Rif Chain. The foreland depozone received the "Numidian Facies," the foredeep-hosted ~2000 m of the "Mérinides Facies" and the Beni Ider Flysch, whereas the wedge-top depozone was characterized by deposition of the "Beliounis Facies." The Numidian Sandstones and the Numidian-like deposits analyzed in Morocco show the same age as similar deposits from Algeria, Tunisia, and Sicily, which suggests a comparable early Burdigalian tectono-sedimentary evolution along the southern branch of the Western Mediterranean subductionrelated orogen. The usual main purpose of the zircon investigation is to determine the precise age of particular rocks, applying the U-Pb isotope method. In this study we attempt to reveal the vast potential of zircons in understanding the magmatic and modification processes, as well as the structure of the deeper Earth's interior, using the analysis of the zircon population of the major volcanic variety in the Ruen tectono-magmatic zone, Kyustendil area, SW Bulgaria. The ascending magmas crosscut different rock types and units along their path to the Earth's surface. Using the zircon crystal analysis, we may make consideration about the age and chemical characteristics of these units. The trace and rare earth element (REE) content of the zircons brings insights for the rock formation time and discloses characteristics of the deeper parts of the Earth's crust. The Kalatag area contains many intrusive rocks of Late Ordovician to Permian age and hosts polymetallic deposits that are associated with magmatism. It is a key area for revealing the nature and genesis of the Palaeozoic rocks in East Tianshan. The intrusive rocks of different periods preserve useful information regarding the tectonomagmatic history of the Kalatag area. Zircon U–Pb geochronological, Hf isotopic, Sr–Nd isotopic, and whole‐rock geochemical analyses are reported for the intrusions from the Meiling ore district, Yudai ore district, and Kalatag pluton to reveal their petrogenesis and geodynamic setting. The LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb analyses suggest that the quartz diorite from the Kalatag pluton formed at 420–432 Ma, and the quartz diorite porphyry from the Yudai ore district formed at 436–439 Ma. The zircons from the quartz diorite and quartz diorite porphyry mainly yield high εHf(t) values (12.2–16.2) and very young Hf model ages (TDM = 0.41–0.56 Ga; TDMC = 0.49–0.56 Ga), which are consistent with a depleted mantle origin. The geochemical characteristics of the granites and quartz diorites from the Kalatag pluton and diorite porphyry from the Meiling ore district exhibit typical subduction‐related features such as enrichment in LILEs and LREEs and depletion in HFSEs. These diorites have moderate Mg# (30–47), positive εNd(t) values (4.2–5.6), and young Nd model ages (0.62–0.83 Ga), which are consistent with a depleted mantle origin that is accompanied by limited crustal assimilation. Based on the regional geology and geochemical evidence and previous studies, the Ordovician–Carboniferous rocks from the Kalatag area are considered to have formed in an island‐arc setting and were probably formed by a subduction event. Post-collisional mountain-root collapse and subsequent massive partial melting occurred in the high-temperature (HT) ultrahigh- pressure (UHP) metamorphic terrane of the North Dabie complex zone (NDZ), central China. The NDZ was deeply subducted in the Triassic, producing widespread migmatites and various magmatic intrusions in the Cretaceous. Post-collisional metadiorites with distinctive large K-feldspar augen porphyroblasts, locally reported but rarely exposed in the NDZ, underwent a complex evolutional history. In this contribution, integrated studies including field investigation, petrographic observation and mineral analysis, zircon U-Pb geochronological and Hf isotopic analyses, and whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic analyses of the metadiorites were carried out. Our results provide new constraints on the mountain-root collapse in the Dabie orogen. The metadiorites are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and light rare earth elements, whereas they are depleted in high field strength elements and heavy rare earth elements with significant Ba positive anomalies, a composition consistent with the lower continental crust. All the studied samples have moderately enriched initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.707582-0.708099), low εNd(t) values (-15.3 to -20.4), and low initial Pb isotopic ratios (16.0978-16.8452, 15.3167-15.4544, and 37.1778-37.8397 for 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb, respectively). However, they have highly negative εHf(t) values and Paleoproterozoic two-stage Hf model ages, which are only partially consistent with data from the associated UHP metamorphic rocks. Such features suggest the metadiorites resulted from a magma produced by mixing of Triassic UHP mafic lithologies and minor amounts of mantle-derived materials. Zircon morphological analysis and U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating combined with conventional thermobarometry indicate that these upwelling melts crystallized at pressure- temperature (P-T) conditions of 5.4-5.7 kbar and 750-768 °C at ca. 130 Ma and subsequently suffered HT metamorphism at ca. 125 Ma. We conclude that the metadiorites' precursors were derived from partial melting of the Triassic subducted Neoproterozoic mafic lower-crustal rocks, with addition of minor amounts of mantle-derived materials in the Early Cretaceous, in response to mountain-root collapse of the orogen. Based on petrographic textures and mineral compositions, it is moreover inferred that formation of the distinctive K-feldspar porphyroblasts is likely related to a two-stage process, i.e., crystallization derived from biotite breakdown after the formation of the metadiorite at T = 640-703 °C and P < 4.5 kbar and coarsening related to shear deformation. Garnet is a fundamental expression of metamorphism and one of the most important minerals used to constrain the thermal conditions of the crust. We used innovative in situ laser-ablation ICP-MS/MS Lu-Hf geochronology to demonstrate that garnet in metapelitic rocks enclosing Cambrian eclogite in southern Australia formed during Laurentian Mesoproterozoic metamorphism. Garnet porphyroblasts in amphibolite-facies metapelitic rocks yielded Lu-Hf ages between 1286 ± 58 Ma and 1241 ± 16 Ma, revealing a record of older metamorphism that was partially obscured by metamorphic overprinting during ca. 510 Ma Cambrian subduction along the East Gondwana margin. Existing detrital zircon age data indicate the protoliths to the southern Australian metapelitic rocks were sourced from western Laurentia. We propose that the metapelitic rocks of southern Australia represent a fragment of western Laurentian crust, which was separated from Laurentia in the Neoproterozoic and incorporated into the East Gondwana subduction system during the Cambrian. The ability to obtain Lu-Hf isotopic data from garnet at acquisition rates comparable to those for U-Pb analysis of detrital zircon means, for the first time, the metamorphic parentage of rocks as expressed by garnet can be efficiently accessed to assist paleogeographic reconstructions. The Ellsworth belt is one of several fault-bounded blocks exposed along the southeastern coast of Maine that formed within Ganderia. New ID-TIMS U–Pb geochronological data integrated with field relationships provide additional insights into the timing of magmatism and deformation in the Ellsworth belt. The deformed Lamoine Granite was selected for U–Pb zircon analysis to: (i) establish the protolith age; (ii) provide direct temporal constraints on regional low-grade metamorphism and deformation; and (iii) elucidate relationships between the Ellsworth belt and coeval rocks elsewhere in the Appalachian orogen. The Lamoine Granite was emplaced within the Ellsworth Schist at 492 ± 1.7 Ma; this is the first unequivocal evidence for a Furongian magmatic event in the Ellsworth belt. The schistosity in the Lamoine Granite is parallel to the main fabric of the host Ellsworth Schist and provides a maximum estimate for timing of the regional metamorphic overprint. Widespread deformation in the Ellsworth belt where kinematic indicators indicate a top-to-northwest sense of shear is attributed to thrusting during which progressive horizontal shortening, caused crustal thickening and peak greenschist facies metamorphism. The Cambrian U–Pb age permits correlation of the Lamoine Granite with the Cameron Road Granite in the Annidale belt of New Brunswick where subduction-related magmas intruded the Penobscot arc–back-arc and were subsequently deformed during the Penobscot Orogeny. The Capricorn Orogen, Western Australia, is a complex orogenic zone that records the convergence and collision of the Archaean Yilgarn and Pilbara cratons in forming the West Australian Craton (WAC), then over one billion years of subsequent intracontinental reworking. Granites associated with these tectonothermal events (the Dalgaringa, Bertibubba, Moorarie, Durlacher and Thirty Three supersuites) are exposed in the western part of the Capricorn Orogen. This study integrates radiogenic (U–Pb and Hf) and stable isotope (O) analysis of zircon grains from granitic rocks in the Capricorn Orogen to determine their ages and magmatic sources, including the relative contributions of mantle versus crustal material. Granites from the margin of the Yilgarn Craton record periods of crustal growth and reworking during the Archaean that influenced later Proterozoic magmatic events. Components of the Capricorn Orogen, collectively termed the Glenburgh Terrane, have previously been considered to be exotic to the adjacent Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. However, new U–Pb zircon geochronology and Lu–Hf isotope compositions of basement rocks in the Glenburgh Terrane (the Halfway Gneiss) have similarities to some terranes of the Yilgarn Craton, and are interpreted to represent a reworked portion of the craton that was re-accreted during the Glenburgh Orogeny. Arc magmatism during the Ma Glenburgh Orogeny resulted in a period of crustal growth, with magmas representing a mixture of 50–90 % mantle-derived magmas and 50–10 % magmas derived from an evolved crustal component with an isotopic composition equivalent to that of the Halfway Gneiss. Following assembly of the WAC, granite magmatism in the Capricorn Orogen records a significant change from one dominated by mantle-derived magmatism to one dominated by crustal melting and an increased contribution from metasedimentary material. This transition reflects a geodynamic evolution from subduction–accretion to collision and intracratonic reworking. The isotopic characteristics of granites from the Moorarie Supersuite indicate three distinct sources: (1) a metasedimentary component; (2) an evolved crustal component, comparable with the Glenburgh Terrane; (3) a mafic juvenile component. Following this, the Hf–O compositions of the Durlacher Supersuite indicate that they were derived from reworking of the Moorarie Supersuite granites, and require no juvenile contribution or any additional sedimentary source. Middle to Upper Jurassic strata in the Paradox Basin and Central Colorado trough (CCT; southwestern United States) record a pronounced change in sediment dispersal from dominantly aeolian deposition with an Appalachian source (Entrada Sandstone) to dominantly fluvial deposition with a source in the Mogollon and/or Sevier orogenic highlands (Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation). An enigmatic abundance of Cambrian (ca. 527-519 Ma) grains at this provenance transition in the CCT at Escalante Canyon, Colorado, was recently suggested to reflect a local sediment source from the Ancestral Front Range, despite previous interpretations that local basement uplifts were largely buried by Middle to Late Jurassic time. This study aims to delineate spatial and temporal patterns in provenance of these Jurassic sandstones containing Cambrian grains within the Paradox Basin and CCT using sandstone petrography, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, and detrital zircon trace elemental and rare-earth elemental (REE) geochemistry. We report 7887 new U-Pb detrital zircon analyses from 31 sandstone samples collected within seven transects in western Colorado and eastern Utah. Three clusters of zircon ages are consistently present (1.53-1.3 Ga, 1.3-0.9 Ga, and 500-300 Ma) that are interpreted to reflect sources associated with the Appalachian orogen in southeastern Laurentia (mid-continent, Grenville, Appalachian, and peri-Gondwanan terranes). Ca. 540-500 Ma zircon grains are anomalously abundant locally in the uppermost Entrada Sandstone and Wanakah Formation but are either lacking or present in small fractions in the overlying Salt Wash and Tidwell Members of the Morrison Formation. A comparison of zircon REE geochemistry between Cambrian detrital zircon and igneous zircon from potential sources shows that these 540-500 Ma detrital zircon are primarily magmatic. Although variability in both detrital and igneous REE concentrations precludes definitive identification of provenance, several considerations suggest that distal sources from the Cambrian granitic and rhyolitic provinces of the Southern Oklahoma aulacogen is also likely, in addition to a proximal source identified in the McClure Mountain syenite of the Wet Mountains, Colorado. The abundance of Cambrian grains in samples from the central CCT, particularly in the Entrada Sandstone and Wanakah Formation, suggests northwesterly sediment transport within the CCT, with sediment sourced from Ancestral Rocky Mountains uplifts of the southern Wet Mountains and/or Amarillo-Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma. The Mbondo-Ngazi Tina area belongs to the eastern part of the Adamawa-Yadé Domain (AYD), which corresponds to the central domain of the Central African Fold Belt (CAFB) in Cameroon. This area comprises three groups of granitoids including granites, syenites, and diorites, which are chemically similar to quartz monzonites and nepheline syenites, and monzodiorites, respectively. These granitoids are metaluminous and I-type rocks, with the dioritic rocks being ferroan and high-K calc-alkaline, while others are magnesian and shoshonitic rocks. The Ti-in-zircon thermometer suggests crystallization temperatures of 678–811 °C and 658–768 °C for monzonites and syenites, respectively. Their zircon trace element distribution and patterns coupled to the whole-rock geochemical features indicate that the Mbondo-Ngazi Tina granitoids were most likely originated from the mixture between crust- and mantle-derived melts, with high crustal portion for the quartz monzonites and nepheline syenites, and strong involvement of mantle component for the monzodiorites. The Ce/Ce*, Eu/Eu*, Th/U, and Zr/Hf of zircons suggest that the crystallization of magma melts took place under variable oxidizing and oxygen fugacity conditions at temperature of 678–768 °C. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb zircon analyses yield emplacement age of 576.4 ± 1.9 Ma and 585.9 ± 2.1 Ma for the quartz monzonites and nepheline syenites, respectively. These ages suggest that these rocks are post-tectonic granitoids emplaced during relaxation stages after the collision between the Amazonian-West African cratons and the São Francisco-Congo and Saharan cratons. The post-collisional extensional regime is related to the development of large shear zones across the Pan-African/Brasiliano belts, which played a role for the ascent and emplacement of post-tectonic granitoids in response to lithospheric delamination. Sedimentary successions and igneous rocks exposed in Eastern Sayan provide an important geological record on the tectonic evolution of the southwestern margin of the Siberian Craton during the Neoproterozoic. Here we present sedimentological and detrital zircon provenance data from key stratigraphic units, complemented by a new U-Pb zircon age of 718 ± 6 Ma from the mafic Nersa magmatic complex. Sedimentological and provenance data from the lower part of the stratigraphic succession (Karagasy Group) show that these rocks were deposited in a passive margin setting after 750 Ma and before the emplacement of the Nersa magmatic complex. The upper part of the stratigraphic succession (Oselok Group) consists of Cryogenian and Ediacaran glaciogenic deposits and associated cap carbonates, overlain by mid to late Ediacaran sequences of dominantly shallow-marine and fluvial siliciclastic rocks. Provenance data indicate that rocks from the Tuva-Mongolia and Zavkhan terranes provided a significant input of detrital material into the sedimentary basin that was the source of the glacial deposits. An increasing number of detrital zircon U–Pb geochronological data have been reported to trace sediment provenance for the Cenozoic Qaidam basin, which is crucial to understanding crustal deformation, paleoclimate change and basin development in northern Tibetan Plateau and to assessing geodynamic models of plateau growth. However, the existing provenance interpretations are highly diverse and how the northern Tibet has evolved remains controversial. This contribution presents new detrital zircon dating results from Cenozoic outcrop and borehole samples and compiles published data from the whole Qaidam basin, adjacent small Cenozoic basins and the surrounding mountains. Our new synthesis indicates that, Paleoproterozoic signals (1800–2000 Ma and 2350–2500 Ma), rather than the Permian–Triassic ages, can be applied effectively to distinguish the Qilian, Altun and Eastern Kunlun-sourced detrital zircons. The Cenozoic Qaidam basin exhibits spatiotemporally variable detrital zircon age populations. Most sandstones from the western and southern basin are characterized by Phanerozoic bimodal age spectra (i.e., 400–480 Ma and 220–280 Ma) with minor Precambrian signals, indicating major contributions from the neighboring Altun and Eastern Kunlun ranges. By contrast, almost all the northern and eastern basin sandstones display prominent early Paleozoic detrital zircon ages; but Paleoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic (750–950 Ma) and Permian–Triassic signals only appear as dominant age clusters in some samples. Different temporal variation trends are observed from the investigated sections in this region, revealing variable zircon supply from different micro-terranes in the Qilian Mountains. This implies that using detrital zircon provenance data from a single section or from a local area of the Qaidam basin to address regional tectonic and climatic issues of the northern Tibetan Plateau unlikely provide useful results. We propose that the Cenozoic Qaidam basin deposits were derived from localized, adjacent source regions, rather than cross-basinal, distant mountains. Our conclusions support models with synchronous deformation throughout most of northern Tibet in the Cenozoic. The observed spatiotemporal variations in detrital zircon populations are not only attributed to tectonic deformation-induced source changes, but can also be due to heterogeneity of the source terranes (e.g., durability and zircon fertility) and variable factors (e.g., hydrodynamic sorting, recycling and sedimentary microenvironment) in transport-deposition processes. This study also highlights the importance of involving detrital zircon textural and sedimentological parameters to zircon provenance interpretations. The northern Sichuan Basin of central China is an important region for investigating the continent-continent convergence that resulted from the closure of the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean. The Early-Middle Jurassic sediments of this basin record the palaeogeography, palaeoenvironments and tectonic evolution of the southern Qinling orogenic belt, especially the Dabashan thrust belt. Detailed sedimentological investigations, coupled with provenance analyses using zircon U Pb geochronology, demonstrate that during Early Jurassic times, conglomerate megafan facies extended across the northern Sichuan Basin into the Micangshan area deformed by South Dabashan thrusting and reached even as far as the Mianlue suture belt. These megafan deposits were mainly reworked from the Silurian sediments of the North Dabashan thrust belt (also called the South Qinling orogenic belt), north of the Mianlue suture. These conglomerates record the initial thrust-driven uplift and exhumation of the Qinling orogenic belt that rapidly followed the diachronous closure of the Mianlue oceanic basin. Moreover, our results show that the detrital materials of meandering stream, lacustrine and braided river delta facies that accumulated in the Middle Jurassic mainly originated from the southern Qinling orogenic belt, Mianlue suture zone and northern South China block, suggesting the southward progradation of the Dabashan fold-thrust belt onto the northern Yangtze block and the southward migration of the basin centre. These findings support a model in which the Early to Middle Jurassic evolution of the northern Sichuan Basin may have been triggered by East Asian convergence. The Southernmost Brasília Orogen surrounds the southern margins of the São Francisco Craton. It exposes a structural window with a WNW-ESE direction formed by the Archean-Paleoproterozoic basement reworked by the Campo do Meio Shear Belt. Using metamorphic modeling, geothermobarometry, and U Pb dating of zircon and monazite, this study established the pressure-temperature-time (P-T -t) evolution of the Colônia metapelite, one of the main units of the Campo do Meio Shear Belt. This revealed a clockwise path with metamorphic peak conditions at 706 ± 16 °C and 9.7 ± 0.7 kbar on a staurolite-kyanite-muscovite-garnet-biotite schist, with cooling at ∼600 °C and ∼ 6 kbar. Forward metamorphic modeling based on the whole-rock composition of this sample supports partial melting in the staurolite stability field, facilitated by water influx. Water-fluxed anatexis promoted dissolution of detrital zircon grains. These processes, occurring during prograde metamorphism, are influenced by temperature, crystal size-distribution, bulk-rock composition, and the permanence of the rock at the thermal peak. Analysis of the zircon overgrowth zones, which were linked to peak metamorphic conditions, produced an age of 605 ± 7 Ma. The monazite age of 580 ± 5 Ma was associated with later syntectonic melt crystallization. The clockwise P-T -t path of the Colônia metapelite is similar to the evolution of Neoproterozoic units from the Southernmost Brasília Orogen. • Coqen zircon xenocrysts were originated from ancient recycled continental crustal. • Zircons record the temporal evolution of magmatism and crustal thickness in Coqen. • Lhasa terrane evolutionary process is restored by these zircon xenocrysts. The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of Coqen are located in the western central Lhasa subterrane, where knowledge of the regional lithospheric architecture and related magmatic processes is still lacking. To address this issue, we used in situ U–Pb dating, Lu–Hf isotopic and mineral inclusion analysis in zircon xenocrysts among trachyandesite. These zircons from volcanic samples yielded wide U–Pb ages from 18 Ma to 2424 Ma, showing three significant age peaks at ∼ 246 Ma, 193 Ma, and the most intense one at 128 Ma, which represent three major magmatic processes that developed in the area. The earliest zircon dates suggest the age of volcanic eruption in the Coqen area was not earlier than 18 Ma. Zircon xenocrysts trace elements data point to the continental crust origin of central Lhasa subterrane. We provide the evidence for evolutive magmatism of the Lhasa terrane by calculating ΔFMQ, and show that the oxygen fugacity goes from reduced to oxidized (Cambrian to Miocene). The very low ε Hf (t) indicate a long-term magmatic event sequence, with the Zenong Group having the most vigorous magmatic activity. The old U–Pb ages and T DM C confirmed that an ancient basement of the Precambrian exist in the middle Lhasa terrane. Our work also restores the tectonic and crustal thickness evolutionary process of Coqen area even entire Lhasa terrane. In the back of a series of thickening and thinning processes, the Tibetan crust drastically thickened at ∼ 54 Ma, and gradually created what is now believed to be the thickest crust in the world. • U–Pb data from fast pulse LA-ICP-MS is equivalent with conventional U–Pb analysis. • Provenance of the largely unexposed Yeneena Basin revealed. • Exotic sources support a transcontinental transport system across Rodinia. Over ten thousand detrital zircon U–Pb analyses on thirty four samples were undertaken using a fast pulse laser ablation protocol from the Neoprotoerozoic rocks of the largely unexposed Yeneena and northwestern Officer Basins in Western Australia. In addition, conventional laser ablation detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology was carried out on three of the samples. A comparison of the two datasets demonstrated that no statistical significant difference was observed in the detrital zircon spectra between the two techniques. The results of the detrital zircon analyses reveal that after an intial pulse of material dominated by Archean detritus the sediment are dominated by Mesoproterozic sources. This indicates that there is little variation in source materials within and between the identified formations. The major age peaks coincide with magmatic rock ages from within Australia. The results indicate that either the Palaeoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic terranes remained sources throughout the deposition of the Yeneena and northwestern Officer Basins during the Neoproterozoic, or that recycling of zircons occurred within a quasi-closed system for the duration of sedimentation. The remaining 10 % of grains are difficult to reconcile with magmatic suites of any significant volume within Australia. However, when considering the broader palaeogeographic context at the time the sediments are inferred to have been deposited, rocks from Dronning Maud Land and the Kalahari Craton can supply grains of appropriate ages and are consistent with the known paleocurrent directions. This work demonstrates that there is no significant disadvantage in the application of the fast pulse technique when applied to the collection of U–Pb detrital zircon datasets for the purpose of detrital zircon fingerprinting. The Transvaal Supergroup, on the Kaapvaal Craton in South Africa, is widely accepted as one of the best-preserved sedimentary archives to constrain planetary-scale environmental changes during the late Archean and early Proterozoic, yet the sedimentation age for certain stratigraphic intervals remains poorly constrained. To improve the temporal control on some of the first-order global changes recorded in these rocks, we carried out U-Pb analyses of detrital zircon populations from several clastic and volcano-clastic sedimentary units of the Transvaal Supergroup. We applied the Chemical Abrasion-Isotope Dilution-Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) technique on detrital and volcanic zircon populations that had been previously screened using the Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) technique. We report new maximum depositional age estimates for the Pannetjie (2456.6 ± 7.0 Ma), the Heynskop (2451.5 ± 2.5 Ma), the Makganyene (2423.1 ± 1.0 Ma) and the Hekpoort formations (2248.0 ± 1.1 Ma). A ca. 2.25 Ga-old cluster of LA-ICP-MS analyses in the Makganyene Formation was identified to be spurious, since it was completely removed during the chemical abrasion. Thus, we speculate that circulation of hydrothermal fluids and associated Pb-loss from a radiation-damaged lattice during the emplacement of the much younger Hekpoort Formation or possibly the Ophthalmia Orogeny, recorded in Western Australia, may have reset the U-Pb system of this zircon population. This implies that the accurate maximum depositional age of the Makganyene Formation is ca. 2.42 Ga instead, which denotes the age of the oldest glacial event of global extent during the Paleoproterozoic. Therefore, we suggest that the combination of both dating techniques is essential to ensure accurate maximum depositional age constraints for ancient detrital sedimentary rocks. Additionally, our data provides temporal constraints on a period characterized by major fluctuations in atmospheric oxygen. Crustal extension due to the retreat of subduction system has been assigned as an important mechanism governing the Devonian tectonic evolution of the Chinese Altai Orogen in central Asia. While the extensional regime has been repeatedly inferred from petro-structural (petrographic and structural) records preserved in the orogenic upper crust sedimentary covers and orogenic middle crust schists, such records have rarely been documented in the deep crustal migmatitic and/or magmatic rocks. This gap is filled in this study by applying combined petro-structural analysis in conjunction with zircon and monazite U-Pb geochronology on representative orogenic lower crustal migmatite-granite complexes. These complexes are characterized by the development of a sub-horizontal foliation associated with extensional melt‐filled shear bands. The foliation commonly contains garnet-sillimanite ± K-feldspar ± cordierite-bearing metamorphic assemblages that are compatible with a low-pressure/high-temperature thermal regime. In addition, such mineral assemblages are usually found to replace pre-existing middle-pressure/middle-temperature Barrovian-type ones, reflecting a tectonic switch from thickening to extension. New monazite and zircon U-Pb age data, together with regional pre-existing ages, suggest that the sub-horizontal high-temperature foliation formed during a period of 420–390 Ma. Combined with previously published data, our data reinforce that a crustal-scale extensional tectonic regime developed in response to retreating of subduction system governed the geodynamic evolution of the Chinese Altai Orogen during Devonian times. This process led to regional anatexis of the pre-existing Ordovician accretionary wedge complex, facilitated the formation of stabilized and vertically stratified continental crust, and promoted the metallogenic evolution in the region during the Devonian. The eastern and southern Precambrian basement of Mexico is composed of crustal blocks linked to northern Amazonia before and during the assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent. In this paper, we examine an extensive basement block known as the Sierra de Juárez Complex (SJC) in southern Mexico by integrating fieldwork, in-situ zircon U–Pb geochronology by LA-ICPMS and whole-rock geochemistry by X-ray fluorescence. The results provide evidence for a continuous low-to high-grade metamorphic succession here re-defined as the Pochotepec suite (PS), which comprises an upper lithodeme with volcanosedimentary precursors and a lower lithodeme that includes mafic to intermediate orthogneisses and migmatites. The analytical results suggest that the PS protoliths originated in a continental-arc tectonic setting ca. 1080-1050 Ma along the northern edge of Amazonia before the consolidation of Rodinia. In addition, xenocrystic zircon U–Pb analyses indicate the presence of a recycled older crust of ca. 1200–1300 Ma. Finally, U–Pb data of recrystallized zircon rims and younger metamorphic zircon grains recorded the timing of metamorphism and anatexis of the PS during the early Tonian (954-933 Ma). The crystallization ages of two trondhjemitic leucosomes of 954 and 933 Ma strongly support the migmatization age. The Tonian metamorphic/anatectic episode of the PS differs in grade and age from the typical metamorphism related to the amalgamation of Rodinia reported in Mexico and Colombia (granulite-facies at ca. 990 Ma). The northern shelf of South China Sea is an important passageway for the transportation of sediments from the terrigenous source to the oceanic sink, but the provenance and dispersal patterns of sediments remain largely unclear. Here we report the results of zircon grain-size analysis and U-Pb geochronology to investigate the sediment provenance and illustrate the transport and dispersal patterns of sediments on the continental shelf of the northern South China Sea. The results show that detrital zircon U-Pb ages within sediments are characterized by a major peak at ca. 150 Ma, as well as three minor age populations at ca. 240 Ma, 400–500 Ma, and 900–1000 Ma. A detailed provenance study suggests that these sediments were primarily derived from both the Pearl River catchment and the drainage systems in Taiwan Island. Our study confirms that the transportation and dispersion of sediments were largely controlled by both topography and hydrodynamics of sea. The sediments in the inner continental shelf were transported from the Pearl River drainage system and subject to the Guangdong Coastal Current, whereas the sediments in the middle and outer continental shelf were markedly influenced by the South China Sea warm current. The geochemical and isotopic signatures of magmatic events preserved in deformed metavolcano-sedimentary sequences may inform about geological setting and original basin stratigraphy. This paper discusses elemental and isotopic geochemical literature data on metavolcanic rocks interleaved with highly-deformed metasedimentary rocks from the Dom Feliciano Belt central sector, southernmost Brazil: the high-grade Várzea do Capivarita, and the lower greenschist to amphibolite facies Porongos and Passo Feio complexes. We also provide new geochemical data for seven samples and two U-Pb zircon determinations. REE patterns, together with geochronological data, permit to sort the dataset into three main groups: i) Group 1 - LaN/YbN ≈ 10, Eu/Eu* = 0.38 to 0.86; ii) Group 2 - LaN/YbN = 12 to 44, no Eu anomaly, and iii) Group 3 - negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* ≈ 0.70), but higher LREEs absolute values (LaN/YbN ≈ 22), and rare basic metavolcaniclastic rocks (Bmvc). New U-Pb zircon analyses of two Passo Feio acidic metavolcanic rocks yield a crystallization age of 580 ± 2 Ma (2σ). Group 1 samples account for a magmatic event at 800–770 Ma in the Várzea do Capivarita and Porongos (Cerro da Árvore sequence) complexes. They represent a magmatic association produced from subduction-related sources, with crustal contribution shown by 87Sr/86Sr (790 Ma) > 0.715 and ƐNd (790 Ma) from −5 and −11 (up to –22). Groups 2 and 3 account for a magmatic event at ca. 600 to 580 Ma in the Passo Feio and western Porongos (Capané sequence) complexes. Groups 2 and 3 rocks are interpreted to have been sourced from subduction-related enriched mantle without major crustal contamination, with 87Sr/86Sr (580 Ma) = 0.7035–0.7050 and ƐNd (580 Ma) > -10. For the basic metavolcanoclastic sample (Bmvc), the data suggest mantle-derived origin without significant contribution of subduction-related sources, possibly indicating multiple sources for this newly-described and not yet fully understood Ediacaran magmatism. Our comparative study leads to the novel conclusion of a shared tectonic evolution between the Passo Feio Complex and the western Porongos Complex at ca. 600–580 Ma. The precursor basin of the Araçuaí – West Congo Orogenic System (AWCO) formed a large gulf within the São Francisco – Congo Paleocontinent (SFCP), where the diamictite-bearing Macaúbas Group was deposited during the Neoproterozoic. However, the lack of robust age constraints on the Cryogenian glaciogenic successions prevents correlation to one or both of the Cryogenian Snowball Earth glaciations. The present study introduces new field data and new U–Pb detrital zircon data from diamictite-bearing units on the southern margin of the São Francisco Craton, in the northeastern Araçuaí Orogen. This region is much closer to possible Ediacaran-Cryogenian igneous rocks of the southern São Francisco craton than other regions previously studied for the Macaúbas Group, enhancing the probability of detecting detrital minerals from those rocks, if they were involved as source areas. In the studied region, the Macaúbas Group is composed of metadiamictite with sparse clasts and schistified metagraywacke with bulk mineralogy similar to the quartz-muscovite-feldspar matrix of the metadiamictites. U–Pb (LA-MC-ICP-MS) dating of 182 detrital zircon grains from the Lower Chapada Acauã Formation forming the syn-glacial sequence yielded main age peaks at 939 ± 3 Ma, 1409 ± 10 Ma, 1822 ± 8 Ma, 2044 ± 7 Ma, 2551 ± 9 Ma and 3103 ± 19 Ma. The youngest concordant zircon grain found in this study aged 753 ± 12 Ma. U–Pb (LA-MC-ICP-MS) dating of 104 zircon crystals from a granitic clast recovered from the diamictite exhibits highly discordant data plotting in distinct Discordia lines with upper intercept ages of 2.0 Ga, 2.5 Ga, 2.6 Ga and 3.2 Ga, indicating derivation from the adjacent cratonic basement. The U–Pb age spectra suggests important contribution from the Archean and Paleoproterozoic basement of the São Francisco – Congo paleocontinent and metamorphic complexes, from the Mesoproterozoic intrusive and volcanic rocks of São Francisco Craton, and from the Tonian Salto da Divisa Suite. Despite the relative abundance of Cryogenian zircon grains in the surrounding prospective source areas, the studied rocks lack this interval age. The glaciogenic events in the Macaúbas basin system probably did not sample rocks with these age intervals due to the general characteristics of this type of deposit or because the sources were not exposed. • New in situ detrital zircon analyses are reported for the Winnipeg River terrane. • Eo-Paleoarchean detrital ages and their Hf compositions suggest local sources. • The Eo-Paleoarchean data overlaps with two other terranes in the Superior Province. • These three terranes may have comprised a once contiguous proto-cratonic nucleus. Metasedimentary rocks within Archean cratons can preserve a record of early cratonic crustal evolution and later metamorphic events. However, interpreting this record is difficult where the metasedimentary rocks have undergone amphibolite-granulite facies metamorphic overprinting and migmatization. In the Western Superior Province, migmatitic metasedimentary rocks represent a dominant supracrustal component in several terranes, including, from north to south, the English River, Winnipeg River, Wabigoon and Quetico terranes. Here we present zircon U-Pb-Hf isotope data for three metasedimentary rocks and one augen gneiss from the Mystery Lake dome in the Winnipeg River plutonic-gneiss terrane using in-situ techniques and large zircon populations. The augen gneiss contains zircon that has overlapping U-Pb-Hf isotope systematics with the ca. 3250 Ma gneissic basement of the terrane. The detrital zircon grains from the metasedimentary rocks have age populations at ca. 3750 Ma, 3600 Ma, 3500 Ma, 3400 Ma, 3300–3100 Ma, 3050 Ma, 2950–2900 Ma, 2850–2800 Ma, and 2800–2745 Ma, with metamorphic zircon between approximately 2745 Ma and 2550 Ma. The paucity of exposed Eo-Paleoarchean rocks in adjacent terranes suggests that the source rocks were derived from within the Winnipeg River terrane. The age and Hf isotope systematics of Eo-Paleoarchean detrital zircons from the Winnipeg River terrane overlap with zircon data from the Hudson Bay and Minnesota River Valley terranes on the northern and southern margins of the craton, respectively. The evidence suggests all three plutonic-gneiss terranes have preserved similar Eo-Paleoarchean geological histories, supporting the hypothesis that they were derived from a contiguous proto-craton. IN-SIMS (in-situ secondary ionization mass spectrometry) micro-zircon geochronology resolves the age of the Chipman and Kazan mafic dike swarms exposed along the central segment of the Snowbird Tectonic Zone (STZ), the geophysically defined feature separating the Rae and Hearne subprovinces of the western Churchill Province. Long-considered syn -kinematic with respect to Paleoproterozoic transpressional deformation, the primitive composition of the STZ Large Igneous Province (LIP) and granulite grade metamorphic overprint has made establishing crystallization ages difficult. In-situ U-Pb isotopic analysis of micro-zircon yielded scattered and discordant results, except for four zircon crystals, which yielded a weighted mean of 2113 Ma +/- 22 (n = 8 analyses; MSWD: 0.46). This age is similar to other mafic complexes in the western Churchill Province including the Griffin Gabbro sills interpreted to have formed during opening of the Manikewan Ocean. Nd isotopic analyses of Kazan dikes paired with geochemical data suggest that the Chipman and Kazan dikes were asthenospherically-derived but contaminated by a metasomatized lithospheric root. At ca. 2.1 Ga, the STZ was the site of intracratonic extension within a coherent Rae-Hearne crustal block (Snowbird LIP Phase I). Existing data suggests that subsequent tectonism led to focused dextral transpression along the trace of the dike swarm and attests to a long-lived interplay of preexisting weaknesses and deformation. • Meta-mafic rocks in this study experienced multiple metamorphism of the late Neoarchean and the late Paleoproterozoic. • The garnet-bearing mineral assemblages were formed during the late Paleoproterozoic rather than the Neoarchean. • The Neoarchean metamorphic event of Jiaobei terrane occurred in garnet-absent low pressure P-T conditions. Interpretations of high-grade terranes recording more than one episode of metamorphism can often be problematic due to the difficulties in assigning the metamorphic conditions to the time of metamorphism. The Jiaobei terrane as a typical Precambrian metamorphic terrane in the North China Craton (NCC) records multiple high-grade metamorphic events. Resolving the timing and features of each metamorphic event can cast light on the above issue and also play a key role in understanding the geological evolution of the Jiaobei terrane and the NCC. This study reports paired U-Pb dating with in-situ trace elements and oxygen isotope compositions of metamorphic zircons in meta -mafic rocks from the Qixia area of Jiaobei terrane. The zircons develop core-rim structures with both of them exhibiting metamorphic features. Zircon rims, although widely developed, are mostly too thin for in-situ age dating. LA-ICPMS as well as SIMS zircon U-Pb analysis of zircon cores yielded metamorphic ages of ∼ 2500 Ma, whereas the rims yielded 207Pb/206Pb ages of 1915–1717 Ma. The rare earth elements (REE) patterns and δ18O values measured in the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic zircon rims are distinct from those measured in the Archean cores. Distinct features of the cores and rims imply that the garnet-bearing (high-pressure) mineral assemblages were formed during late Paleoproterozoic metamorphic event and absent during the Neoarchean event. These new geochronological data further confirm that the Jiaobei terrane records both the late Neoarchean metamorphism and the late Paleoproterozoic tectonic thermal event. Also, our study argues for the existence of global subduction network geological records in the NCC during Paleoproterozoic, rather than during Neoarchean. The influence of the overprinted late Paleoproterozoic metamorphism should be fully considered when estimating P-T conditions of the earlier tectonothermal event (Neoarchean metamorphism). • Detrital zircon age spectra analyses suggest that the Quanji Group and the overlying Neoproterozoic rocks in the OLT may have different source provenances. • The Great Unconformity in the OLT and NCC consists of two or three discrete unconformities. • These unconformities may have been caused by multiple tectonic activities rather than a single, global synchronous one. The Great Unconformity that separates the early Cambrian sandstones from the Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary rocks has been recognized in many blocks on Earth. However, whether it represents a globally synchronous event or a composite of a series of diachronous events, and its formation mechanism remain largely unknown. In this study, we carry out detrital zircon U-Pb analyses for seven samples collected from the Paleoproterozoic Quanji Group and the overlying Neoproterozoic strata in the Olongbuluke terrane (OLT) of Northwest China. The results show that apart from age populations of ∼ 1.8–2.0 Ga and ∼ 2.2–2.5 Ga for all samples, additional ∼ 1.55–1.65 Ga age population occurs in sample from the Zhoujieshan Formation, and more scattered age populations ranging from ∼ 0.75 to ∼ 1.7 Ga are present in samples from the Heitupo and Hongtiegou formations. The ∼ 1.8–2.0 Ga and ∼ 2.2–2.5 Ga zircons correlate well with the magmatic and metamorphic events in the OLT basement, indicating their local provenances, while other zircons were possibly derived from the North China craton (NCC) or other adjacent blocks. Combined with published paleontological, stratigraphic, and geochronological data, the present study supports previous inference that the OLT had a close paleogeographic affinity to the NCC during late Paleoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic. New zircon U-Pb ages indicate that the Heitupo Formation was deposited later than ∼ 750 Ma, and the underlying Hongzaoshan Formation was deposited at ∼ 1.66 Ga, implying a huge break between them. Whereas the duration of the sedimentary break between the Heitupo Formation and the overlying Hongtiegou Formation is uncertain, biostratigraphic data suggest that a break of ∼ 30 Myr may exist between the late Ediacaran Zhoujieshan Formation and the overlying early Cambrian Xiaogaolu Group. The occurrences of these multiple unconformities in OLT are comparable to those in NCC, indicating that the Great Unconformity is represented by a series of lengthy denudations during the Proterozoic-early Cambrian in both the OLT and NCC, which may result from multiple tectonic activities in these two blocks. The Cerro Uyarani Metamorphic Complex (CUMC) in Bolivia provides a record of complex Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic tectono-magmatic evolution, as revealed through U–Pb isotopic analysis of zircon from three litho-domains (DI – DIII). The Paleoproterozoic crystalline basement was subject to two stages of Mesoproterozoic reworking. This detailed study of zircon textures and geochronology, including determination of first Hf-isotope data, from felsic granulites, banded granulites and amphibolites reveals a first Paleoproterozoic event at 1.81–1.74 Ga in magmatic and some metamorphic zircon cores, with zircon ϵHf T values of +6.3 to −0.2. A subsequent Mesoproterozoic event can be divided into 2 cycles: a first one at 1.19–1.17 Ga is reflected by recrystallized rims and cores of zircon with ϵHf T values of −6.8 to −3.6. This cycle is here associated with migmatization of the basement, during which the Paleoproterozoic crust was differentiated into DI-leucosome rich migmatite, DII-leucosome rich migmatite, DIII – our best proxy of Paleoproterozoic crust, melanosome, and paleosome. The second cycle at ∼1.1–1.0 Ga is recorded in metamorphic rims and by newly grown metamorphic zircon with ϵHf T values of −15.1 to −2.6. This event was responsible for the transformation of the CUMC migmatitic basement into granulite facies rocks. We interpret that the CUMC was part of the southernmost portion of the Arequipa terrane from, at least, ∼1.74 Ga and that it then became attached to the Paraguá terrane and Amazon craton at 1.19–1.17 Ga. This collision generated migmatites, and then, with the arrival of Laurentia passing through the Arequipa terrane front (with CUMC at the Arequipa terrane), the conditions of metamorphism were raised to granulite facies. A younger event of lower metamorphic grade and likely associated with fluid-driven alteration is recognized in the partial retrograde transformation of mafic granulites into amphibolites. Our new U–Pb and εHf T data indicate that the Paleo-to Mesoproterozoic history of the CUMC is, thus, similar to that of the Arequipa terrane, Rio Apa terrane, the SW Amazon craton, and other Grenville-age inliers; but it was distinct from the evolution of the Sierra de Maz and Pie de Palo of the hypothetical MARA craton. • The Cerro Uyarani Metamorphic Complex (CUMC) witnessed multistage tectono-magmatic-metamorphic Paleo-to Mesoproterozoic events, similar with Arequipa terrane, Rio Apa terrane, SW of Amazon craton and Grenville inliers. • U–Pb and Hf-isotope data assign the first tectono-magmatic-metamorphic event with ages between 1.88 and 1.67 Ga. • Zircon textures indicate a second event distinguished by a first cycle of migmatization at ∼1.19 Ga and a second cycle of granulite metamorphism at 1.10–1.00 Ga; two reworking phases of Paleoproterozoic crust during the Mesoproterozoic. • U–Pb and Lu–Hf isotopic data reveals the association of the Cerro Uyarani Metamorphic Complex with the youngest events of the Grenville-Sunsas Orogeny. Over the past century, a wide variety of poorly dated sediments that unconformably overlie pre-Neogene rocks in Sulawesi have been assigned to the Celebes Molasse and interpreted as post-orogenic rocks deposited after a major collision. New data from fieldwork and laboratory studies, including mineralogical, palaeontological and zircon geochronological analyses, provide the basis for a new Neogene stratigraphy and show that sediments assigned to the Celebes Molasse have significant variations in age, environment of deposition, composition and sedimentation history. Identified unconformities in the (1) Early Miocene (c. 23 Ma), (2) Middle Miocene (c. 15 Ma), (3) Mio-Pliocene (c. 6–5.3 Ma), and (4 and 5) Pleistocene (c. 1.8 and 0.1 Ma) separate Lower Miocene, Middle to Upper Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene mega-sequences. These mega-sequences resulted from Early Miocene collision followed by extension, driven by subduction rollback, causing both uplift and subsidence, in contrast to previous interpretations of multiple collisions. S-type granites are typical features of collisional orogenic belts and could provide insights into the tectonic process associated with the final phase of orogeny. The East Qinling Orogen, one of significant segments in the Central China Orogen, witnessed complex tectonic evolution during the Late Mesozoic. The rare S-type granites in this orogen can be used as important proxies to understand the Late Mesozoic tectonic processes. Although a few previous studies suggested that the Huangbeiling pluton in the East Qinling Orogen might be S-type granite, detailed studies are lacking. Thus, we report the results from a systematic petrological, whole-rock geochemical and zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf isotopic studies on the Huangbeiling pluton, with a view to constrain the timing of magmatism, petrogenetic evolution and genetic type, and to evaluate the implications for Late Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the East Qinling Orogen. Zircon U-Pb analysis yield 206Pb/238U spot ages in the range of 156.7–132.2 Ma, with weighted 206Pb/238U mean ages varying from 146.8 to 141.9 Ma, suggesting the Huangbeiling pluton formed during the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. Zircon Lu-Hf isotopic data show negative εHf(t) values of −21.5 to −14.9 and two-stage Hf model ages of 2546–2131 Ma, which are correlated with the Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic (3.0–2.1 Ga) meta-sedimentary rocks from nearby Taihua Group, indicating that the magma was sourced from reworked ancient crustal components involving meta-sedimentary rocks. Whole-rock geochemical data display enrichment of LREEs, Pb, Hf and Y as well as depletion in HREEs, Ba and HFSEs (e.g., Ta, P, Ti), with weakly negative Eu anomalies. The Huangbeiling granitoids are identified as S-type granites, which generated through partial melting of lower-middle crust and upper crustal fractional crystallization in syn -collisional settings. In conjunction with published information related to the tectonic evolution of the East Qinling Orogen, we propose that the Late Mesozoic Huangbeiling S-type granites might response to the complex tectonic evolution related to extensional tectonics induced by multi-directional (intra-continental) subductions from the Yangtze and North China Cratons as well as the Paleo-Pacific Plate during the Late Mesozoic. The Valanginian and Hauterivian stages of the Early Cretaceous are an important time interval for the co-evolution of key vertebrate taxa and flowering angiosperm, as well as for the diversification of dinosaurs and early birds on continents. Among these, the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota in northern China provides the most valuable fossil evidence. Lower Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Luanping Basin, northern China, is notable for its continuous sedimentary sequence and preservation of the early Jehol Biota, thus providing crucial evidence for probing into terrestrial ecosystem and paleoclimatic change. In this study, we present a chronology for the Lower Cretaceous Dabeigou and Dadianzi formations based on SIMS U–Pb zircon analyses and previous biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy from the Zhangjiagou section in the Luanping Basin, northern China. The lowest Dabeigou Formation yields age of 134.1 ± 1.0 Ma, and the upper Dadianzi Formation is constrained to 127.8 Ma, respectively. Previous geochronologic, biostratigraphic studies, and our new geochronology show that the Dabeigou and Dadianzi formations in the Luanping Basin are coeval with the Huajiying Formation in the Sichakou basins, representing the early Jehol Biota evolution, and thus are undoubtedly deposited earlier than the Yixian Formation in western Liaoning. Our findings, combining with the fossil evidence and geochemistry data show that the early evolution of the early stage of the Jehol Biota is constrained to ~132 Ma, characterized by a positive carbon isotope excursion (CIE) and increased biodiversity. The cooler temperature than the underlying sediments attribute to the primary productivity and thus helps the Jehol Biota to thrive. • We report a new chronology for the Lower Cretaceous in the Luanping Basin. • It's consistent with the early Jehol Biota preserves in the Senjitu-Sichakou basins. • Our findings show an age gap between the early–middle Jehol Biota. • Our data allow reconstructing chrono-stratigraphic columns around the Jehol area. • Testing the link between paleoclimatic change and the development of the Jehol Biota.
