In this work, a modification method of H3PO4 plus H2O2 (PHP) was introduced to targetedly form abundant oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) on biochar, and methylene blue (MB) was employed as a model pollutant for adsorption to reflect the modification performance. Results indicated that parent biochars, especially derived from lower temperatures, substantially underwent oxidative modification by PHP, and OFGs were targetedly produced. Correspondingly, approximately 21.5-fold MB adsorption capacity was achieved by PHP-modified biochar comparing with its parent biochar. To evaluate the compatibility of PHP-modification, coefficient of variation (CV) based on MB adsorption capacity by the biochar from various precursors was calculated, in which the CV of PHP-modified biochars was 0.0038 comparing to 0.64 of the corresponding parent biochars. These results suggested that the PHP method displayed the excellent feedstock compatibility on biochar modification. The maximum MB adsorption capacity was 454.1 mg/g when the H3PO4 and H2O2 fraction in PHP were 65.2% and 7.0%; the modification was further intensified by promoting temperature and duration. Besides, average 94.5% H3PO4 was recovered after 10-batch modification, implying 1.0 kg H3PO4 (85%) in PHP can maximally modify 2.37 kg biochar. Overall, this work offered a novel method to tailor biochar towards OFGs-rich surface for efficient adsorption.

Triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives have been widely used as useful building blocks for diverse functional materials because of their excellent redox activity. Most of the molecular structures of TPA-based organic functional materials contain 4-anisyl groups, which on one hand could reduce their oxidation potential and on the other hand significantly delocalize the spin density of the resultant TPA radical cation species and enhance their stability. However, molecular-level investigation of the redox behavior of triphenylamines consisting of 4-anisyl group and the electronic structures of their radical cation species has not been reported in the literature. Herein, we design a series of triphenylamines consisting of one, two, or three 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-anisyl groups and investigate their redox behaviors and corresponding radical cation species. We disclose that the resonance hybrid and steric protection could both contribute to the stability of triphenylamine radical cations. Moreover, further oxidation leads to an unexpected oxidative demethylation. The findings in this work may reveal new insights for the understanding of the unique redox properties of 4-anisyl substituted triphenylamines.

BACKGROUND Curcumin has become increasingly popular in functional foods and beverages field as a result of its high biological activity. Nevertheless, the application of curcumin is usually limited by its poor water solubility, low absorption, rapid metabolism and instability. Accordingly, the development of an appropriate wall material is crucial for its effective use. In the present study, curcumin-octenyl succinic anhydride modified pullulan (Cur-OSAP) micelles were successfully prepared by an anti-solvent co-precipitation method. RESULTS Octenyl succinic anhydride modified pullulan (OSAP) micelles exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (57.31%) and loading capacity (5.73%) of curcumin when the mass ratio of OSAP to curcumin was 10:1 and the degree of substitution of OSAP was 0.0469, at which point Cur-OSAP micelles formed via hydrogen binding and hydrophobic interactions, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and fluorescence techniques. The transmission electron microscopy results showed that the Cur-OSAP micelles were roughly spherical in shape with diameters in the approximate range 30-60 nm. CONCLUSION The encapsulation of OSAP greatly improved photostability and sustained release properties of curcumin in Cur-OSAP micelles. These findings suggest that OSAP can be used as a carrier to encapsulate and protect hydrophobic food ingredients. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

SnO2 films as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) have been widely used in planar-type perovskite solar cells to achieve an impressive improvement in the conversion efficiency. However, compared with a mesoporous ETL, the interfacial charge carrier transfer of the SnO2 ETL is severely limited due to the issues of oxygen vacancy defects and crystal lattice mismatch between SnO2 and the perovskite, which generally leads to the growth of randomly stacked and porous perovskite layers and subsequently impacts the charge transport and transfer properties. In this work, we developed a facile approach by inducing a bifunctional molecule, β-alanine, into the SnO2 ETL, which can serve as a bridge to modulate the interfacial charge transfer and the perovskite crystallization kinetics. Benefited by the interfacial β-alanine, we grew a highly orientational perovskite layer that exhibited superior charge transport properties. Meanwhile, the β-alanine caused an intimate connection between the perovskite and SnO2 to enhance the interfacial charge transfer. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the β-alanine-modified device achieved a much-improved value of 19.67% and showed high reproducibility. This work provides a way for developing a high-performance ETL toward the scalable fabrication of highly efficient PSCs.

Hyperectumine (1), the first C19 benzylisoquinoline alkaloid with a complicated ring system, was isolated from Hypecoum erectum and structurally characterized. Its biosynthetic origin should involve a hybrid pattern of C8 + C8 + C1 + C2, from which a C17 benzylisoquinoline alkaloid might be further attacked by a malonamic acid and undergo decarboxylation and cyclization to produce 1. Compound (-)-1 exhibited moderate anti-inflammatory activity via suppression of LPS-activated inflammatory mediators in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells.

Purpose Endothelial dysfunction and the subsequent decrease in endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation of small arteries are major features of hypertension. Artemisinin, a well-known antimalarial drug, has been shown to exert protecting roles against endothelial cell injury in cardiac and pulmonary vascular diseases. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of artemisinin on endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation and arterial blood pressure, as well as the potential signalling pathways in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Methods In this study, acetylcholine (ACh)-induced dose-dependent relaxation assays were performed to evaluate vascular endothelial function after treatment with artemisinin. Artemisinin was administered to the rats by intravenous injection or to arteries by incubation for the acute exposure experiments, and it was administered to rats by intraperitoneal injection for 28 days for the chronic experiments. Results Both acute and chronic administration of artemisinin decreased the heart rate and improved ACh-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation but negligibly affected the arterial blood pressure in SHRs. Incubation with artemisinin decreased basal vascular tension, NAD(P)H oxidase activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, but it also increased endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activity and NO levels in the mesenteric artery, coronary artery, and pulmonary artery of SHRs. Artemisinin chronic administration to SHRs increased the protein expression of eNOS and decreased the protein expression of the NAD(P)H oxidase subunits NOX-2 and NOX-4 in the mesenteric artery. Conclusion These results indicate that treatment with artemisinin has beneficial effects on reducing the heart rate and basal vascular tension and improving endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation in hypertension, which might occur by increasing eNOS activation and NO release and inhibiting NAD(P)H oxidase derived ROS production., Graphical Abstract

The hydrogel wound dressings are mostly sheet-like and do not possess adhesive properties, so it is often difficult for them to adhere well to the skin tissues and fit completely with the irregularly shaped wounds or deep wounds, thereby affecting their therapeutic effects. Herein, the chitosan derivative-based mussel-inspired hydrogels have been developed to overcome these obstacles. Specifically, the principle of adhesion of marine mussel was imitated to synthesize catechol-modified chitosan (CMC), which was potentially used as the raw material to prepare the mussel-inspired hydrogels, that can contribute to the excellent adhesive property and make the hydrogels adhere well to the wound sites. The o-diphenyl groups in CMC could be easily oxidized to form o-diquinone to further form a covalent binding with amino groups (–NH2), or can directly form coordination binding with Fe3+.This strong covalent and coordination binding causes the hydrogels to possess a complex spatial structure, which facilitates the hydrogels to display good swelling properties, drug loading and release properties. Furthermore, the total saponins of Panax notoginseng were loaded in the hydrogels and the therapeutic effects of drug-loaded hydrogel were investigated in the model of full-thickness skin injury in mice. The wound healing rate was observed to be as high as 92.5% without exhibiting any scarring. Overall, our findings provided a novel strategy for the preparation of hydrogels for therapeutic applications.

A pair of two-dimensional (2D) isostructural coordination polymers (CPs), {[Co(2,3-qldc)(H2O)]} n (1) and {[Mn(2,3-qldc)(H2O)]} n (2), where 2,3-H2qldc = quinoline-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized through IR spectroscopy, elemental and thermal analysis, power X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results have revealed that the fully deprotonated 2,3-H2qldc ligand connects the Co(II)/Mn(II) atoms with a μ 3-bridge to form a square-wave 2D network, which is further extended into 3D stacks through O–H···O, C–H···O hydrogen bonds and π···π stacking interactions. Topologically, 1 or 2 can be simplified as a 4-connected sql type with a Schläfli symbol {44·62} and a Shubnikov tetragonal plane net, or as a 3-connected fes type with a Schläfli symbol {4·82} and a Shubnikov plane net. The thermal stability and the solid state fluorescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.

In this work, novel antibacterial cellulose diacetate/poly(ethylenimine)/hyaluronic acid (CDA/PEI/HA) composite three-dimension (3D) scaffolds were prepared through electrospinning and post-processing. Firstly, CDA/PEI 2D composite nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning, and then the CDA/PEI/HA 3D composite scaffolds were fabricated by post-processing and freeze-drying of CDA/PEI membranes. In particular, HA was added to improve the biocompatibility of composite scaffolds. Compared with CDA/PEI scaffolds, CDA/PEI/HA composite scaffolds showed higher water absorbing rate, higher water retention rate and higher mechanical strength. Moreover, CDA/PEI/HA composite scaffolds with abundant positive charge were benefit for improving antibacterial activity. CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds with biology function of HA were benefit for improving hemocompatibility and cell proliferation of CDA/PEI scaffolds. In summary, antibacterial CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds could protect wound from bacterial infection, improve cellular behavior and accelerate wound healing. Thus, CDA/PEI/HA scaffolds could be potential application for wound dressing.

A new six coordinated tetra-nuclear macrocyclic Zn(II) complex, ZnL4(Phen)2 (1) (HL= 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde-pyridine-2-carbohydrazone, Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) has been synthesized by the self-assembly of 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde-pyridine-2-carbohydrazone, Zn(CH3COO)2•2H2O, NaOH and 1,10-phenanthroline in water/ethanol (v:v = 1:3) solution. Complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, infra red (IR), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results show that Zn1 and Zn1b ions are six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometric configuration by four O atoms of two different L ligands and two N atoms of two different L ligands, Zn1a and Zn1c ions are also six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometric configuration by two N atoms of two different L ligands, two N atoms of Phen ligands and two O atoms of two different L ligands. Complex (1) forms 3D network structure by the - interaction. The selective oxidation reactions of benzyl alcohols catalyzed by complex (1) was investigated. The highest benzyl alcohol conversion and benzaldehyde selectivity were obtained at 100 °C for 4 h under 5 bar of O2. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Background Previous studies have demonstrated the preclinical pharmacological and toxicological consistency, and clinical pharmacokinetic equivalence of bevacizumab biosimilar LY01008 with reference bevacizumab (Avastin). This randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of LY01008 with Avastin in first‐line treatment of Chinese patients with advanced or recurrent non‐squamous non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Stage IIIB‐IV NSCLC patients with evaluable lesions, good physical status, and adequate organ functions from 67 centers across China were randomized in a ratio of 1:1 to receive LY01008 or Avastin 15 mg/kg intravenously in combination with paclitaxel/carboplatin (combined treatment) for 4‐6 cycles, followed by maintenance monotherapy with LY01008 until disease progression, intolerable toxicity, or death. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) in accordance with Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 confirmed by independent radiological review committees (IRRC). Secondary endpoints included disease control rate (DCR), duration of response (DoR), progression‐free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03533127). Results Between December 15th, 2017, and May 15th, 2019, a total of 649 patients were randomized to the LY01008 (n = 324) or Avastin (n = 325) group. As of September 25th, 2019 for primary endpoint analysis, 589 patients received ORR evaluation, with a median number of combined treatment cycles of 5 (range 1‐6) and median duration of treatment of 3.0 (range 0.0‐5.1) months. ORR of response‐evaluable patients in the LY01008 and Avastin groups were 48.5% and 53.0%, respectively. The stratified ORR ratio was 0.91 (90% CI 0.80‐1.04, within the prespecified equivalence margin of 0.75‐1.33). Up to May 15th, 2020, with a median follow‐up of 13.6 (range 0.8‐28.4) months, no notable differences in DCR, median DoR, median PFS, median OS, and 1‐year OS rate were observed between the LY01008 and Avastin groups. There were no clinically meaningful differences in safety and immunogenicity across treatment groups. Conclusions LY01008 demonstrated similarity to Avastin in terms of efficacy and safety in Chinese patients with advanced or recurrent non‐squamous NSCLC. LY01008 combined with paclitaxel/carboplatin is expected to become a new treatment option for unresectable, metastatic, or recurrent non‐squamous NSCLC patients in the first‐line setting., This study demonstrated similarity between LY01008 and reference bevacizumab (Avastin) in terms of efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin as first‐line treatment in Chinese patients with advanced non‐squamous NSCLC.

Temperature-responsive resistance transition behaviors of the melamine sponges wrapped with different graphene oxide derivatives (i.e. nanoribbon, wide-ribbon and sheet) were investigated. Melamine sponge composites coated by three types of GO derivatives were prepared by a simple dip-coating approach. All these composites show good mechanical flexibility and reliability (almost unchanged compressive stress at 70 % strain after 100 cycles), high hydrophobicity (water contact angle >120°), excellent flame resistance (self-extinguishing) and structural stability even after burning, which was used to construct the resistance-based fire alarm/warning sensor. Notably, the different resistance response behaviors of such sensors are strongly dependent on the GO size and network formed on the MF skeleton surface. Typically, at a fixed high temperature of ∼350 ℃, the three fire alarm sensors show different response time (to trigger the alarm light) of 6.3, 8.4 and 11.1 s for nanoribbon, wide-ribbon and sheet at the same concentration, respectively. The structural observation and chemical analysis demonstrated that the discrepancy of temperature-responsive resistance transition behaviors of various GO derivatives was strongly determined by their different thermal reduction degrees during the high-temperature or flame treating process. This work offers a design and development for construction of smart fire alarm device for potential fire prevention and safety applications.

Pollution of N-methyl carbamate (NMC) pesticides is threatening the non-target organisms’ survival. Thus, broad-specific antibodies and class-selective immunoassay are demanding for multiple NMCs determination. In this study, we employed a molecular docking-based virtual screening strategy to fast profile antibody spectrum, based on a designed chemical pool containing 17 compounds. A monoclonal antibody (mAb)-6G against carbofuran was used as the objective. The recombinant full-length IgG was successfully expressed to validate the antibody sequences for homology modeling. After docking, we manually categorized the antibody-chemical binding strength into three groups. Non-competitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) demonstrated the mAb-6G affinitive binding toward five NMCs (carbofuran, isoprocarb, propoxur, carbaryl and carbosulfan), which were classified into strong and moderate binding categories. Antibody binding properties were confirmed again by ic-ELISA and lateral flow immunochromatographic strip. Subsequently, an ultrasensitive indirect competitive fluoromicrosphere-based immunoassay (ic-FMIA) was established with the IC50 (half-maximal inhibitory concentration) values of 0.08-3.37 ng/mL. This portable assay presented a 30~230-fold improved sensitivity than traditional ic-ELISA and was applied in European surface water analysis. Overall, our work provides an efficient platform integrating in-silico and experimental methodologies to accelerate the characterization of hapten-specific antibody binding properties and the development of high-sensitive immunoassays for multi-pollutants monitoring.

Chidamide has demonstrated significant clinical benefits for patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) PTCL in previous studies. This multi-center observational study was aimed to evaluate the objective response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS), and safety of chidamide. From February 2015 to December 2017, 548 patients with R/R PTCL from 186 research centers in China were included in the study. Among the 261 patients treated with chidamide monotherapy, ORR was 58.6% and 55 patients (21.1%) achieved complete response (CR). Among the 287 patients receiving chidamide-containing combination therapies, ORR was 73.2% and 73 patients (25.4%) achieved CR. The median OS of all patients was 15.1 months. The median OS of patients receiving chidamide monotherapy and combination therapies was 433 and 463 days, respectively. These results demonstrate a significant survival advantage of chidamide treatments as compared with international historical records. Common adverse effects (AEs) were hematological toxicities. Most AEs in both monotherapy and combined treatments were grade 1–2. No unanticipated AEs occurred. In conclusion, chidamide-based therapy led to a favorable efficacy and survival benefit for R/R PTCL. Future studies should explore the potential advantage of chidamide treatment combined with chemotherapy.

Increasing evidence has indicated that oxidative stress is associated with the health of infants. Bifidobacterium, especially B. longum subsp. longum strains, are abundant in the gut microbiota of infants, which may have the potential to ameliorate oxidative damage. Thus, this study aimed to isolate and screen B. longum subsp. longum strains with probiotic characters and antioxidant properties as infants’ dietary supplements. In this study, 24 B. longum subsp. longum strains were isolated from 15 healthy infants identified via 16S rRNA and heat shock protein 60 (hsp60) sequences. B. longum subsp. longum B13, F2, K4, K5, K10, K13, and K15 strains were selected based on high values obtained from autoaggregation, hydrophobicity, and adhesion assays to HT-29 cells. Among these seven strains, B. longum subsp. longum F2, K5, K10, and K15 were selected according to the high tolerance of gastrointestinal tract conditions compared to Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12. Among these four strains, B. longum subsp. longum K5 was susceptible to common antibiotics and showed the highest intestinal epithelial cell proliferation of CCD 841 CoN. Additionally, B. longum subsp. longum K5 showed a strong antioxidant capacity, and its supernatant exhibited better activity of reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and DPPH radical scavenging than that of the intact cells with cell-free extracts. The findings indicated that B. longum subsp. longum K5 could be used as a probiotic candidate in infant nutrition.

Hyperuricemia is a metabolic disease caused by impaired uric acid (UA) metabolism. Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural small-molecule polyphenolic compound with known antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we evaluated the regulatory effects of EA on hyperuricemia and explored the underlying mechanisms. We found that EA is an effective xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitor (IC50 = 165.6 μmol/L) and superoxide anion scavenger (IC50 = 27.66 μmol/L). EA (5 and 10 μmol/L) treatment significantly and dose-dependently reduced UA levels in L-O2 cells; meanwhile, intraperitoneal EA administration (50 and 100 mg/kg) also significantly reduced serum XOD activity and UA levels in hyperuricemic mice and markedly improved their liver and kidney histopathology. EA treatment significantly reduced the degree of foot edema and inhibited the expression of NLPR3 pathway-related proteins in foot tissue of monosodium urate (MSU)-treated mice. The anti-inflammatory effect was also observed in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW-264.7 cells. Furthermore, EA significantly inhibited the expressions of XOD and NLRP3 pathway-related proteins (TLR4, p-p65, caspase-1, TNF-α, and IL-18) in vitro and in vivo. Our results indicated that EA exerts ameliorative effects in experimental hyperuricemia and foot edema via regulating the NLRP3 signaling pathway and represents a promising therapeutic option for the management of hyperuricemia.

Although intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the metabolism of procyanidins, the microbial metabolic pathway of A-type procyanidins remains elusive. In this study, A-type dimer procyanidin A1 [EC-(2β-O-7,4β-8)-C] and trimer PPD [EC-(4β-6)-EC-(2β-O-7,4β-8)-C] were incubated with rat faecal microbiota in vitro, and their metabolomic profiles were analyzed by UPLC-QTOF/MS. Multivariate statistical analysis identified 24 and 30 discriminant metabolites for A1 and PPD, respectively. The C-ring opened catabolites of procyanidin A1 and PPD and the typical phenolic acid metabolites were identified, including phenylacetic acid, (4′-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid, 3-phenylpropanoic acid, 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, 3-(3′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, and 5-(3′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactone. Notably, procyanidin A1 and (epi)catechin were identified from the metabolites of PPD; however, no (epi)catechin was found in the metabolites of procyanidin A1, indicating that the faecal microbiota can destroy B-type linkage (C4-C6 interflavan bond) but not A-type linkage (C4-C8 and additional C2-O-C7 interflavan bond) in the metabolism of A-type procyanidins.

Background Peroxyacetic acid involved chemical pretreatment is effective in lignocellulose deconstruction and oxidation. However, these peroxyacetic acid are usually artificially added. Our previous work has shown that the newly developed PHP pretreatment (phosphoric acid plus hydrogen peroxide) is promising in lignocellulose biomass fractionation through an aggressive oxidation process, while the information about the synergistic effect between H3PO4 and H2O2 is quite lack, especially whether some strong oxidant intermediates is existed. In this work, we reported the PHP pretreatment system could self-generate peroxyacetic acid oxidant, which mediated the overall lignocellulose deconstruction, and hemicellulose/lignin degradation. Results The PHP pretreatment profile on wheat straw and corn stalk were investigated. The pathways/mechanisms of peroxyacetic acid mediated-PHP pretreatment were elucidated through tracing the structural changes of each component. Results showed that hemicellulose was almost completely solubilized and removed, corresponding to about 87.0% cellulose recovery with high digestibility. Rather high degrees of delignification of 83.5% and 90.0% were achieved for wheat straw and corn stalk, respectively, with the aid of peroxyacetic acid oxidation. A clearly positive correlation was found between the concentration of peroxyacetic acid and the extent of lignocellulose deconstruction. Peroxyacetic acid was mainly self-generated through H2O2 oxidation of acetic acid that was produced from hemicellulose deacetylation and lignin degradation. The self-generated peroxyacetic acid then further contributed to lignocellulose deconstruction and delignification. Conclusions The synergistic effect of H3PO4 and H2O2 in the PHP solvent system could efficiently deconstruct wheat straw and corn stalk lignocellulose through an oxidation-mediated process. The main function of H3PO4 was to deconstruct biomass recalcitrance and degrade hemicellulose through acid hydrolysis, while the function of H2O2 was to facilitate the formation of peroxyacetic acid. Peroxyacetic acid with stronger oxidation ability was generated through the reaction between H2O2 and acetic acid, which was released from xylan and lignin oxidation/degradation. This work elucidated the generation and function of peroxyacetic acid in the PHP pretreatment system, and also provide useful information to tailor peroxide-involved pretreatment routes, especially at acidic conditions. International audience; Trait structure is increasingly used in plankton ecology to understand diversity and biogeography. However, our knowledge of microzooplankton (e.g. planktonic ciliates) trait structure and its variation with hydrography is limited. In this study, we analyzed planktonic ciliate trait structure in waters with different hydrography and deep Chlorophyll a maximum (DCM) layers over three seamounts: Yap, Mariana, and Caroline seamounts. Mariana seamount had a lower surface temperature than the Yap and Caroline seamounts. DCM layers over Mariana and Caroline seamounts were deeper than Yap seamount. There was a weak upwelling in upper 50 m around top of Mariana seamount. The ciliate distribution showed bimodal pattern (high abundance appeared in the surface and DCM layers) over three seamounts. At surface layer, the large size-fraction (>30 µm) abundance proportion to aloricate ciliate over Yap seamount (44.4%) was higher than Mariana (32.8%) and Caroline (36.1%) seamounts. For tintinnid abundance proportion to total ciliate, Mariana (12.0%) and Caroline (11.5%) seamounts at about 100-m depth were higher than that of Yap seamount (6.4%). Vertically, tintinnid could be divided into 4 groups over the three seamounts. At 30-m depth, group I (species occurring from surface to 100 m only) was dominant component over Yap and Caroline seamounts, while group IV (species occurring at every depth) changed into dominant component over Mariana seamount, the weak upwelling might be the reason. Salpingella faurei was the top dominant species, which corresponded to deeper DCM layers over Mariana and Caroline seamounts. Our results showed that the upwelling and the deeper DCM could influence the planktonic ciliate trait structure.

An integrated technique of hydrothermal pretreatment coupling with deep eutectic solvent (DES) extraction was tailed to cleanly fractionate lignocellulose into three usable forms, i.e., water-soluble hemicellulose, cellulose-rich and lignin fractions, which were further upgraded to three nanomaterials, i.e., activated nanocarbons (ANCs), lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs), lignin nanospheres (LNSs) respectively. Almost 100% hemicellulose was solubilized in the hydrothermal pretreatment, which was used as carbon source to produce ANCs with rather high specific surface area (about 2680 m2 g−1) through in situ carbonation followed by activation. Cellulose-rich fraction was used to produce LCNFs with high aspect ratio (about 150) using facile mechanical refining. While the clean lignin fraction with enhanced amphiphilic properties was used to produce LNSs (223 nm diameter) using self-assembly method. The related mechanism was that condensed lignin could still be extracted by DES due to its excellent lignin solubility. The resulting lignin amphiphilicity provided a powerful driving force to enhance the self-assembly process thus compact LNSs was obtained. Meanwhile, the DES-swelled cellulose structure significantly facilitated the subsequent mechanical disintegration for LCNFs production. In this work, the proposed integrated technique platform realized the complete utilization concept of lignocellulosic biomass, and also provided three high-value nanomaterials product streams for downstream application towards an industrial relevant process.

Antipsychotic medications based on the dopamine hypothesis possess limited effects for negative symptoms and cognitive impairments of schizophrenia. Growing body of evidence suggests that redox dysregulation contributes to the pathophysiology of the illness. We synthesized new chemicals using apocynin and tandospirone as leading compounds, and tested their antioxidant properties. The new compounds (A-1, A-2, A-3, and A-4), olanzapine (OLA), and clozapine (CLZ) were examined in terms of the ⋅OH radical decreasing activity and the effects on intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation induced by X-irradiation in human lymphoma U937 cells. The effects of these drugs, given around the period of puberty (postnatal days; PD 49 to 62), on glutathione (GSH) levels, as well as the number of parvalbumin (PV)-positive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons were evaluated in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of rats transiently exposed to MK-801 in the neonatal period. A-2, A-3, A-4, OLA, and CLZ decreased intracellular ⋅OH and OCl−. The novel compounds reversed the decrease in GSH concentrations and reduction of PV-positive neurons in the mPFC in the model rats. CLZ only decreased GSH levels while OLA did not show a significant effect on either measure. These findings suggest that the new compounds derived from apocynin and tandospirone elicit antioxidant properties, and may provide a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of schizophrenia and its spectrum disorders.

The passivation strategy is considered to be one of the most effective methods to suppress the non-radiative recombination of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), resulting in excellent photovoltaic performance. Herein, it reported a valid strategy to enhance the photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs by modifying graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets into an electron transport layer interface. It is able to optimize surface morphology and crystal quality of perovskite film, which makes synergistic efforts to improve the PCE from 9.55% to 11.37% with these devices.

An ultra-low energy consumption continuous flow (UECF) process was used for enhanced nitrogen removal from rural sewage. The ammonia in sewage was first oxidized to nitrite in a bio trickling filter (BTFPN) supplemented with natural oxygen. A stable nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) of 93.2% was maintained by adding 5 mg/L NH2OH every seven days. BTFPN effluent was then combined with certain portion of rural sewage (1:1.2 to 1:1.5) and introduced to an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, where the nitrogen-containing pollutants were removed by Anammox process (UASBAMX). Effluent total nitrogen (TN) of 6.7 mg/L and a TN removal efficiency of 93.7% were obtained when influent chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+-N and TN were 321.9, 74.2 and 82.7 mg/L, respectively. Advanced nitrogen removal, based on the desirable cooperation between Anammox bacteria (Ca. Brocadia, 2.3%) and partial denitrification bacteria (Thauera, 4.2%), was achieved over 300 days of stable operation. Considering the nitrogen balance, 57.9% of nitrate generated in Anammox was reduced to nitrite by partial denitrification, and Anammox contributed 88.1% of nitrogen removal and 7.6% of denitrification. Compared with conventional nitrification and denitrification processes, UECF requires no mechanical aeration, no external carbon, produces 76.6% less external sludge, and reduces CO2 emissions by 92.3%.

The final products of shikimic acid pathway, aromatic amino acids (AAA), can be used as humic acid (HA) precursors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the contribution of shikimic acid pathway on the formation of HA during composting. Four composting treatments were carried out in this study, including the control, biochar addition, montmorillonite addition, biochar and montmorillonite combined addition. The results showed that the correlations between AAA and HA were enhanced during combined addition composting, and functional microorganisms involved in the shikimic acid pathway increased. In addition, random forest model suggested that 63.3% of the top 30 genera contributing to the HA formation were functional microorganisms involved in the shikimic acid pathway, which fully proved the critical role of shikimic acid pathway. Therefore, this study provided a new perspective for revealing the crucial factors that promoted the formation of HA during composting.

Castor oil (CSO)-derived polyurethanes (PUs) are limited by the low mechanical performance and non-reprocessability arisen from their permanently crosslinked structures with high crosslink density and flexible network backbone. In this study, we report malleable polyurethane networks prepared from CSO and hexamethylene diisocyanate with vanillin derived Schiff base (VSB) as a multifunctional monomer. On one hand, VSB with multiple rigid benzene rings and two hydroxyl groups works as a structure modifier to regulate network stiffness and crosslink density of the PUs, which allows us to tailor their mechanical properties over a broad range from soft to tough and hard depending on the content of VSB. On the other hand, VSB with dynamic imine bonds provides the PUs with vitrimeric properties including malleability, thermal processability, and recyclability via network topological rearrangement as a result of imine exchange reaction at elevated temperatures. Consequently, we achieved malleable, processable, and recyclable CSO-derived PU vitrimers with tunable mechanical properties (from elastomer to tough and hard plastics), which would improve the viability and sustainability of CSO-based PUs.

In practical applications, the full biodegradability of all-biomass-based bacterial cellulose (BC) composites enhances their environmentally friendliness but results in the poor durability especially at humid conditions. This work prepared BC/lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) composite films with retarded biodegradability, which could broaden their application area. Three LNPs were fabricated using technical lignins extracted by deep eutectic solvent (DES), ethanol organosolv, soda/anthraquinone from poplar. LNPs involvement during BC fermentation showed limited influence on its productivity but significantly retarded the biodegradation of composite films. The potential inhibition mechanism was physical barrier and non-productive binding of LNPs. The BC/Soda LNPs showed much higher retarded degradation property (~58 wt% degradation) compared to BC/Organosolv LNPs and BC/DES LNPs (~85 wt% and ~ 97 wt% degradation respectively) at high enzyme loadings of 5 mg g−1 BCE. While at low enzyme loadings of 1 mg g−1 BCE, all these three composite films showed comparable retarded degradation property of ~60 wt%.

Flexible pressure-sensing materials with high sensitivity and good mechanical reliability are highly required to meet the long-time and accurate detecting requirement for wide-stress motions. Herein, we describe a bamboo-inspired design approach to fabricate mechanically flexible and electrically conductive carbon nanofiber/polydimethylsiloxane foam composites with unique and designed hierarchical pore structures. The optimized multi-level pore structures not only show outstanding mechanical flexibility and reliability, but also possess high sensitivity at a relatively wide stress range. Typically, the hierarchical pore structures (i.e. large-size pore structure of several hundreds of micrometers, hollow structure of several micrometers, micro-/nano-irregular pores on the hollow skeleton) are sensitive to tiny pressures to construct additional conductive paths and thus achieve high sensitivity of ~0.6 kPa−1 at 0–1 kPa. Further, such hierarchical structures easily form highly interconnected conductive network induced by the serious deformation of large pores and sinking of hollow-structure, thus providing the extremely sensitive sensing behavior for a relatively large pressure level as large as 20 kPa. Moreover, the optimized sensor presents good repeatability and excellent reliability after 10000 compressive cycles, which can satisfactorily meet the critical requirements of subtle vital signs, human motions monitoring and so on. Clearly, this work offers a route to design and development of the multifunctional advanced pressure-sensor for potential artificial intelligence application.

This study presents an innovative mainstream Anammox based on multiple NO2−-N supplement pathways to treat actual mature landfill leachate over 180 days. Desirable effluent quality of 11.8 mg/L total nitrogen (TN) and nitrogen removal efficiency of 98.8% were achieved despite fluctuation conditions of 1.5-fold influent substrates and 8.0-fold dissolved oxygen overload. Nitrogen mass balance confirmed Anammox was the dominant nitrogen removal pathway, contributing up to 87.9%. Functional genes of ammonia monooxygenase (amoA), hydrazine synthase (hzsB), and ratio of nitrate/nitrite reductase were highly detected. Anammox genera, Candidatus_Kuenenia (4.1%) and Candidatus_Brocadia (5.3%) were dominant in two functional systems, respectively, due to the different affinity of nitrite, oxygen, and organic carbon. As an economical and sustainable technology, the innovative process enabled a 95.1% decrease in organic carbon demand, a 61.5% reduction in aeration energy consumption, and 77.6% lower biomass production compared with traditional nitrification–denitrification process.

Novel graft copolymer (CSGO) based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) with thermosensitive poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA) side chain was synthesized through free radical polymerization. The highly grafted POEGMA chains on the amino groups of CMCS brought CSGO with thermo-responsive behavior with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) confirmed by turbidimetric, temperature sweep rheology and DSC tests. The potential application of CSGO in sodium bentonite (Na-Bent) dispersion was investigated through rheological, filtration and inhibition measurements, and the interaction mechanism between CSGO and Na-Bent was evaluated. The results showed that CSGO improved the rheological and filtration properties of Na-Bent dispersion before and after aging within 120 ℃, ascribing to combined results of aggregation and film-forming effects on bentonite particles. More interestingly, the thermal-induced hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic transition caused the association of Na-Bent/CSGO flocs and the formation of partially desorbed polymer aggregates, contributing to the thermo-thickening rheology, lower fluid loss and better shale dispersion inhibition ability at elevated temperature. Additionally, CSGO could effectively inhibit clay hydration swelling, following a Fick diffusion mechanism of water through the formed CSGO film on the clay core. Besides forming a film to minimize osmotic swelling, the mixed intercalation of CSGO into clay interlayer with a monolayer CMCS backbone and/or a monolayer POEGMA side chain could inhibit crystalline swelling to a certain extent. Therefore, the superior properties and the attractive high-temperature behaviors of CSGO highlighted its potential application in water-based drilling fluid with recycling values during circulation.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a class of drugs that can be used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, clinical depression, and anxiety by targeting monoamine oxidase B (MAO). However, the side effects of MAOIs drive the requirement of a new framework of enzyme inhibitors development. In this context, a new type of MAOI has been built on the framework of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), realizing the transformation from no function of small molecules to MAOI function of ligand-modified AuNCs. The MAOI activity of fabricated AuNCs can be achieved by size control and specific ligands modification. In this work, AuNCs modified with cysteamine or 4-aminothiophenol, about 1–3 nm in size, were found to have MAOI activity (MAOI-like AuNCs) and their characterization has been extensively described. Meanwhile, the possible mechanism behind this MAOI activity has been explored and it is believed that the proper size of AuNCs with ligands containing amino groups can bind tightly with the entrance to active sites of MAO, blocking the enzyme interacting with its substrates, thereby realizing the function of MAOI. Last, the antimicrobial activity and the performance of the MAOI-like AuNCs in the human blood sample were explored and suggested that MAOI-like AuNCs do not possess strong antimicrobial activity and have no visualized side effect on blood cells, although the by-product peroxide of MAO reaction may reshape the white blood cells. The research in this work may shed some light on the development of a new type of enzyme inhibitor based on the framework of nanomaterials.

Natural fibers with low cost and sustainability can improve the cracking resistance of cement composites. However, the degradation of natural fibers in cement composites is the prime concern for their practical application. In this research, graphene oxide (GO) based membranes with selective permeability were coated on the surface of sisal fibers via a simple dip-coating method to improve their corrosion resistance. The uniformity and morphology of the GO-based membranes on the surface of sisal fibers were first characterized. Then, the effects of GO-based membranes on the degradation behavior (alkaline hydrolysis and mineralization) of sisal fibers were systematically investigated macroscopically and microscopically using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that GO-based membranes can act as the protective layer of sisal fibers thus mitigating the degradation process. This research would provide a novel way to extend the long-term service life of natural fibers in cement composites.

A frequently encountered problem in the practical application of nano- and microflow hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) columns is the distortion of peak shapes arising from a mismatch between the sample solvent and the mobile phase. An unmatched or improperly matched sample solvent can distort the peak shape of analytes and influence their retention times, thereby affecting the quality of the resulting chromatogram. In this work, the effect of sample solvent composition (mixtures of acetonitrile, water, methanol and isopropanol in different ratios) and injection volume (20–100 nL) was systematically investigated using a selection of neutral and charged compounds on a series of zwitterionic and charged small I.D. (0.1–0.3 mm) HILIC columns. For retained compounds, pure ACN was demonstrated to be the best sample solvent to obtain narrow peaks, while for compounds that eluted very close to the solvent peak, the peak shape was distorted when the sample solvent consisted of pure ACN. A highly aqueous sample solvent, which interferes with the partitioning of polar analytes into the stationary phase, was demonstrated to be detrimental for the peak shape of retained neutral compounds, while for unretained compounds that do not or hardly interact with the stationary phase, a high amount of water in the sample solvent was not problematic. For charged compounds, water in the sample solvent favored the electrostatic attraction with the stationary phase. Therefore, the retention time of charged analytes was shown to increase with increasing water content in the sample solvent. Even when a large amount of water was present in the sample solvent, the peak shapes of these compounds were still acceptable. For highly polar compounds with a limited solubility in aqueous sample solvents, it was found that a mixture of ACN and MeOH or IPA is a good alternative.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Tiaogeng decoction (TGD), a mixture of 10 traditional Chinese herbs, has been used clinically for over 30 years in treating menopause-related symptoms such as cognitive changes, mood disorders, vasomotor symptoms, and sleep disorders. These central nervous system symptoms are closely associated with declined ovarian function, which dramatically increases the risk of neurodegenerative disease. Previous studies revealed that TGD may have anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic properties, potentially preventing neurodegenerative conditions; however, the underlying pharmacological mechanism remains unclear. Aim of the study This study aimed to examine whether TGD could activate the Nrf2 and C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathways to effectively reduce oxidative injury and apoptosis in PC12 cells and elucidate the mechanism by which this medicine may prevent neurodegenerative disease. Materials and methods PC12 cells were exposed to different concentrations of TGD (125, 250, 500 μg/mL) and H2O2 (150 μM). 17β-estradiol (0.05 μg/mL) was used as the positive control. A cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and a lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay were used to detect cell viability and cytotoxicity, while Hoechst and flow cytometry were performed to evaluate apoptosis levels. Mitochondrial function was assessed by measuring mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were used to measure oxidative stress (OS). Western blot analysis was used to identify the levels of Nrf2, phospho-JNK (p-JNK), phospho-mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 7 (p-MKK7), Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), Caspase3 (Casp3), Caspase9 (Casp9), Bax, and Bcl-2 proteins. Moreover, JNK agonist anisomycin and Nrf2 inhibitor ML385 were used to validate pathways. Results TGD pretreatment significantly alleviated H2O2-induced cytotoxicity, apoptosis, MMP, and OS levels. H2O2 stimulated the activation of Nrf2 and JNK signaling pathways, but TGD increased the extent of Nrf2 antioxidant activation, decreased the activation of JNK, and eventually reversed the H2O2-induced protein expression of p-MKK7, Keap1, HO-1, Cleaved Caspase3 (CL-Casp3), Cleaved Caspase9 (CL-Casp9), Bax, and Bcl-2. Conclusions This study's findings suggest that TGD may attenuate oxidative injury and apoptosis via the Nrf2 and JNK signaling pathways, making it a potential therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative diseases.

Background Metabolic reprogramming plays an essential role on lymphoma progression. Dysregulation of glutamine metabolism is implicated in natural-killer T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) and tumor cell response to asparaginase-based anti-metabolic treatment. Methods To understand the metabolomic alterations and determine the potential therapeutic target of asparaginase, we assessed metabolomic profile using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in serum samples of 36 NKTCL patients, and integrated targeted metabolic analysis and RNA sequencing in tumor samples of 102 NKTCL patients. The biological function of solute carrier family 1 member 1 (SLC1A1) on metabolic flux, lymphoma cell growth, and drug sensitivity was further examined in vitro in NK-lymphoma cell line NK-92 and SNK-6, and in vivo in zebrafish xenograft models. Findings In NKTCL patients, serum metabolomic profile was characterized by aberrant glutamine metabolism and SLC1A1 was identified as a central regulator of altered glutaminolysis. Both in vitro and in vivo, ectopic expression of SLC1A1 increased cellular glutamine uptake, enhanced glutathione metabolic flux, and induced glutamine addiction, leading to acceleration of cell proliferation and tumor growth. Of note, SLC1A1 overexpression was significantly associated with PD-L1 downregulation and reduced cytotoxic CD3+/CD8+ T cell activity when co-cultured with peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Asparaginase treatment counteracted SLC1A1-mediated glutamine addiction, restored SLC1A1-induced impaired T-cell immunity. Clinically, high EAAT3 (SLC1A1-encoded protein) expression independently predicted superior progression-free and overall survival in 90 NKTCL patients treated with asparaginase-based regimens. Interpretation SLC1A1 functioned as an extracellular glutamine transporter, promoted tumor growth through reprogramming glutamine metabolism of NKTCL, while rendered tumor cells sensitive to asparaginase treatment. Moreover, SLC1A1-mediated modulation of PD-L1 expression might provide clinical rationale of co-targeting metabolic vulnerability and immunosuppressive microenvironment in NKTCL. A pair of cobalt(II)-based hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), [Co(pca)2(bmimb)]n (1) and [Co2(pca)4(bimb)2] (2), where Hpca = p-chlorobenzoic acid, bmimb = 1,3-bis((2-methylimidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene, and bimb = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized through infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental and thermal analysis (EA), power X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. X-ray diffraction structural analysis revealed that 1 has a one-dimensional (1D) infinite chain network through the deprotonated pca− monodentate chelation and with a μ2-bmimb bridge Co(II) atom, and 2 is a binuclear Co(II) complex construction with a pair of symmetry-related pca− and bimb ligands. For both 1 and 2, each cobalt atom has four coordinated twisted tetrahedral configurations with a N2O2 donor set. Then, 1 and 2 are further extended into three-dimensional (3D) or two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks through C–H···Cl interactions. Topologically, HOFs 1 and 2 can be simplified as a 4-connected qtz topology with a Schläfli symbol {64·82} and a 4-connected sql topology with a Schläfli symbol {44·62}, respectively. The fluorescent sensing application of 1 was investigated, 1 exhibits high sensitivity recognition for Fe3+ (Ksv: 10970 M−1 and detection limit: 19 μM) and Cr2O72− (Ksv: 12960 M−1 and detection limit: 20 μM). This work provides a feasible detection platform of HOFs for highly sensitive discrimination of Fe3+ and Cr2O72− in aqueous media.

In this study, a series of commercial V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 catalysts modified with Bi-Ni mixed metal oxides were prepared and tested for NO and N2O simultaneous removal. It was found that the catalytic decomposition of N2O was dramatically promoted over the modified SCR catalyst with 40 wt% of Bi-Ni mixed metal oxides, in which the efficiencies of NO and N2O removal were maintained over 90% and 80% respectively. Besides, the physical and chemical properties of the modified SCR catalyst were systematically characterized. It was confirmed that the doping of Bi-Ni mixed metal oxides could promote the oxygen vacancies over the surface of V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 catalyst, thereby facilitating the decomposition of N2O. Whereas, the surface acid sites for NH3 adsorption and the ratio of V5+ was decreased remarkably with the presence of Bi-Ni species, which partly suppressed the activity of NO catalytic reduction.

Recently, the strategy of using positively charged nanoparticles as new vaccine delivery systems has been widely investigated for enhancing the anti-infectious disease immune responses and has been found to efficiently improve the immune response through the targeting and activation of antigen-presenting cells. Acanthopanax senticosus polysaccharide (ASPS) is extracted from Acanthopanax senticosus and functions as an effective immunostimulatory drug. The present work encapsulated the ASPS immunopotentiator to the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microspheres, and adopted polyethylenimine, a cationic polymer, for coating the microspheres, finally developing the novel nanoparticle (NP) delivery system with positive charge (CaCO3–ASPS–PEI). As a result, our constructed CaCO3–ASPS–PEI remarkably up-regulated CD86 and MHCII and activated macrophages, while increasing TNF-α and IL-1β production via macrophages. Moreover, the mice immunized with porcine parvovirus (PPV) antigen adsorbed onto CaCO3–ASPS–PEI nanoparticles had a significant enhancement in cytokine production, the PPV-specific IgG immune response, and the hybrid Th1/Th2 immune response (dominated by Th1), relative to the remaining groups. Based on the above results, our constructed CaCO3–ASPS–PEI NPs with positive charge may be used as the efficient adjuvant vaccine delivery system for inducing the long-time potent immune responses.

There is a need to be able to design a solar-energy system that considers the fluctuations in the levels of solar irradiation. A solar-energy system consists of two parts: the solar-thermal and power-generation parts. However, current designs address this concern only as it relates to the power-generation part, while the solar-thermal part is designed assuming constant conditions, such that the overall design of the solar-energy system is sub-optimal. In this paper, a novel overall design procedure is proposed for a solar-energy system, which simultaneously considers the solar-thermal and power-generation parts. This design combines the off-design performance of the power-generation part and the overall design parameters for the solar-energy system. In addition, a solar steam plant (SSP) and solar-organic Rankine cycle (SORC) were integrated with the reactive distillation column (RD) and vapor recompression technology assisted RD (VRC-RD) in the methyl acetate hydrolysis process. Actual hourly solar fluctuation data for Islamabad were selected as typical conditions for synthesising the design optimisation of the solar-energy systems. The results showed that this robust design optimisation produced a large real reduction in the total annual cost (TAC) when considering the optimisation of the solar-thermal part under real conditions; in particular, the optimised performance of the SORC with toluene as the working fluid can realise a reduction in the TAC of 42.05%. In addition, with comprehensive optimisation, the SORC with toluene proved to offer the best performance of three working fluid alternatives and realised the largest TAC for an SSP scheme (46.7%). Consideration of the off-design performance in the design of the solar-thermal part also occupied a vital position.
