Stainless steel wires (SSWs)-modified asphalt concrete with stable long-term properties and high electrical conductivity as well as without puncturing vehicle tires is expected to become a promising multifunctional pavement material especially for solving road icing problems in cold climates. Hence, the electrical/thermal, self-heating, and self-deicing properties of SSWs-modified asphalt concrete were investigated in this study. Meanwhile, the measures for increasing the electro-thermal conversion efficiency of composites were explored. 0.75 vol% SSWs reduced the resistivity of asphalt concrete by at least eight orders of magnitude and increased the thermal conductivity by 30.38%. Preapplying a 60 V voltage instantaneously before applying voltage to utilize the breakdown effect on interface capacitors between SSWs, and employing the three-piece electrode arrangement for improving the overlapping probability of SSWs, significantly enhanced the self-heating power, peak/average temperature increase, and self-heating rate of SSWs-modified asphalt concrete by at least three times. The temperature on the top surface of SSWs-modified asphalt concrete slab (with size of 30 cm×30 cm×5 cm) under 60 V voltage increased by 24.1°C with a power density of 827.37 W/m2 for 90 min in a windless condition at −10°C. Meanwhile, the composites exhibited stable resistivity and good self-heating repeatability as well as temperature homogeneity during the self-heating process. The SSWs-modified asphalt concrete slab could melt a 4 mm ice layer within 2 h with an energy efficiency as high as 88.59% at the voltage of 60 V, and the cooling residual heat could theoretically melt a 2.4 mm ice layer to improve the self-deicing energy efficiency by 15.21%. Asphalt binder is the most common material used in road construction. However, the need for more durable and safer pavements requires a better understanding of asphalt's aging mechanisms and how its characteristics can be improved. The current challenge for the road industry is to use renewable materials (i.e., biomaterials not subjected to depletion) as a partial replacement for petroleum-based asphalt, which leads to reducing the carbon footprint. The most promising is to utilize biomaterials following the principles of sustainability in the modification of the asphalt binder. However, to understand whether the application of renewable materials represents a reliable and viable solution or just a research idea, this review covers various techniques for extracting bio-oil and preparing bio-modified asphalt binders, technical aspects including physical properties of different bio-oils, the impact of bio-oil addition on asphalt binder performance, and the compatibility of bio-oils with conventional binders. Key findings indicate that bio-oil can enhance modified asphalt binders' low-temperature performance and aging resistance. However, the effect on high-temperature performance varies based on the bio-oil source and preparation method. The paper concludes that while bio-oils show promise as renewable modifiers for asphalt binders, further research is needed to optimize their use and fully understand their long-term performance implications. In this research, the effects of modifiers on the high-temperature rheological and fatigue properties of asphalt were investigated by utilizing montmorillonite (MMT) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT) as modifiers for 70# and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) asphalt, respectively. Temperature scanning tests and linear amplitude scanning (LAS) tests were performed using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to evaluate the viscoelasticity, rutting resistance, and fatigue properties of the asphalt binder. The rheological properties under high-temperature and high-frequency conditions were also characterized by the Black curve and Cole–Cole transformation. Additionally, the elastic properties of the asphalt were examined using nanoindentation (NI). The results of the DSR tests indicate that the incorporation of MMT/OMMT into asphalt enhances its elastic properties and reduces its viscous properties, leading to improved resistance to shear deformation, rutting, and fatigue. Moreover, the NI tests show that the addition of MMT or OMMT improves the elastic properties of the asphalt, while also validating the effectiveness of nanoindentation in assessing the viscoelasticity of asphalt. The aim of this paper is to investigate the adhesion of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWIBA) and limestone to asphalt using the principles of surface energy theory. MSWIBA asphalt mixes are known for their satisfactory water stability, with adhesion being a crucial factor, as demonstrated in previous freeze-thaw splitting tests. Contact angles of ground MSWIBA and limestone were measured using a capillary rise test, eliminating the influence of material surface structure. Subsequently, adhesion work and spalling work were calculated to correlate with water-induced damage. The results showed that the sequence of adhesion work was fine MSWIBA > limestone > coarse MSWIBA, while the sequence of spalling work was coarse MSWIBA > limestone > fine MSWIBA. The adhesion of MSWIBA asphalt mixes was evaluated using the water boiling test image method to validate the findings of surface energy theory. In both asphalt tests, the spalling rate followed this sequence: coarse MSWIBA > limestone > fine MSWIBA. The Adhesion index ER ranked as follows: ER Fine MSWIBA > ER limestone > ER coarse MSWIBA. These results suggest that the water stability of MSWIBA asphalt mixes is influenced by the surface energy of the components. This study evaluated the properties of soybean oil/SBR reclaimed asphalt (SSRA). The optimal preparation method for SSRA was determined. Additionally, the feasibility of the optimal SSRA scheme was verified through asphalt mixture performance tests. With the soybean oil dosage enhanced, the penetration and low-temperature rheological performance of SSRA were improved. The incorporation of soybean oil lowered the softening point, viscosity, and rutting index of aged asphalt. The softening points of SBR-4%+Oil-7.5% and SBR-6%+Oil-7.5% were 79.4 °C and 82.9 °C, respectively. The stiffness modulus of SBR-6%+oil-10% decreased by 35.37%. When the soybean oil dosage was 10% and the SBR dosage was 6% (SBR-6%+oil-10%), the properties of RTFOT+PAV aged asphalt were restored to those of its original state. The splitting tensile strength ratio of the SBR-6%+oil-10% mixture was 89%, with a decrease of 1.5% compared to the original asphalt mixture. The SBR-6%+oil-10% mixture exhibited improved high-temperature and low-temperature service properties. The total deformation of the SBR-6%+oil-10% mixture decreased by 8.43%, while its dynamic stability increased by 22.21%. This degree of improvement compared to the original asphalt mixture was not significant. The rejuvenation of the aged asphalt and mixture performance can mainly be attributed to the soybean oil supplementing the lost lightweight components of the aged asphalt, while SBR supplemented the degraded polymers. Utilizing soybean oil as a rejuvenating asphalt agent facilitates waste material recycling. A drawback of recycled mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt is their increased stiffness, further worsened by the accelerated aging of binders in extreme weather conditions. Previous studies have shown that while rejuvenating agents can mitigate some of these issues by improving flexibility and reducing brittleness, they often present challenges, such as performance variability and the potential for rutting. This study aims to develop an optimal blend of reclaimed bitumen, a rejuvenating agent, and pure bitumen to achieve rheological properties similar to a control 35/50 pen-grade bitumen for road paving. Hence, the rejuvenated binders comprised 30:70 blends of reclaimed asphalt bitumen and 50/70 pen-grade bitumen, adding 0.2% to 0.6% of a rejuvenating agent by mass of the reclaimed asphalt. Sample testing included conventional penetration grade, softening point, and viscosity tests, followed by dynamic shear rheometer tests under unaged, short-term, and long-term aging conditions. The results show that the binder blend with 0.4% rejuvenator closely resembles the rheological properties of 35/50 pen-grade bitumen. This blend exhibits a 20% to 55% stiffness reduction for recycled mixtures with 30% reclaimed asphalt. Notably, the rejuvenated binders exhibited a similar level of aging resistance to the control bitumen, with a marginal difference of less than 5% in aging ratios. Meanwhile, large strain amplitude tests showed the importance of defining maximum rejuvenating incorporation rates in recycled mixtures to avoid rutting problems, where binders with 0.4% rejuvenator doubled the rutting potential (Jnr values). This innovative study highlights the potential for enhancing recycled mixtures' performance by evaluating rejuvenated reclaimed binders' rheology subjected to different aging conditions, thus contributing to sustainability in pavement construction. Solid waste recycling and reuse have attracted great interest as environmentally friendly modifiers for asphalt pavements in recent years, and phosphogypsum whiskers (PSWs) synthesized by phosphogypsum (PSP) wastes were used as the main modifying material to develop an environmentally friendly asphalt binder in this study. PSWs could significantly enhance the deformation resistance and fatigue performance of asphalt binder but were prone to cracking at low temperature. To alleviate this problem, the novel idea of developing a PSW composite modified asphalt binder was proposed in this study. The organic coating method was used to surface modify PSWs by using surfactants and ultrasonic vibrator to enhance the compatibility of PSWs with asphalt binder. Then a composite modifier containing modified PSW (MPSW) was developed by the uniform design method (UDM), and the preparation process of the modifier was investigated by response surface method (RSM) on this basis. The physical performance of modified asphalt binder was investigated by conventional performance tests; the high-temperature performance, rutting resistance, and fatigue performance were investigated by several rheological tests; and the low-temperature performance was evaluated by the force ductility test (FDT). The microstructure and modification mechanism were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test. The results showed that the self-developed modifier (MPGJ-I) could effectively reduce the negative effects of MPSW on conventional physical properties, and it exhibited a significant aging resistance compared with other commonly used modifiers. In addition, the modified asphalt binder showed a significant enhancement in high-temperature performance, rutting resistance, and fatigue performance. The MPGJ-I not only solved the adverse effect of MPSW on low-temperature performance, but also enhanced the low-temperature performance to a certain degree. The MPGJ-I was only physically mixed with asphalt binder and did not change its chemical structure. The MPGJ-I reduced the influence of MPSW on glass transition temperature (Tg) and improved the thermodynamic properties of asphalt binder at low temperatures. As a green and low-carbon road material, warm-mix rubber asphalt (WMRA) has received extensive attention from scholars for its road performance. In the in-depth study of its properties, the fatigue characteristics of WMRA are particularly critical. However, in current studies on asphalt fatigue performance, its self-healing ability is often underestimated or neglected. Furthermore, the simplified viscoelastic continuum damage theory (S-VECD), with its accuracy, speed, and convenience, provides a powerful tool for analyzing asphalt fatigue performance. Therefore, to analyze the fatigue and self-healing performances of WMRA in practical applications, four sample materials were selected in this study: virgin asphalt mastic (VAM), rubber asphalt mastic (RAM), Sasobit rubber asphalt mastic (SRAM), and Evotherm rubber asphalt mastic (ERAM). Subsequently, the samples were subjected to a comprehensive experimental design with frequency sweep tests, linear amplitude sweep tests, and multiple intermittent loading time sweep tests under different aging conditions. The fatigue and self-healing performances of different aging degrees and different types of WMRA were evaluated based on the S-VECD theory. The results show that aging reduces the fatigue and self-healing performances of asphalt mastic to a certain extent, and at a 7% strain, the fatigue life of SRAM after long-term aging is only 30.7% of the life of the unaged sample. The greater the aging degree, the more pronounced the effect. Under different aging levels, the warm-mix agent can significantly improve the fatigue and self-healing performances of rubber asphalt mastic. After undergoing ten fatigue intermittent loading tests, the recovery rate of the complex shear modulus for the long-term aged VAM was 0.65, which is lower than that of SRAM under the same conditions, and the warm mix can further extend the fatigue life of rubber asphalt by improving the self-healing properties of the asphalt. The role of Sasobit in enhancing the fatigue and self-healing performances of rubber asphalt mastic is more significant. During the preparation of asphalt mixtures, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polymers are susceptible to thermal decomposition, which can significantly impair the binder’s low-temperature performance. This study explores the potential of combining warming agents with waste materials to enhance the low-temperature properties and aging resistance of the binder. Specifically, it examines the synergistic impact of Sasobit/recycled engine oil (Sasobit/REO) composites on the rheological and physical attributes of styrene-butadiene rubber asphalt binder (SBRAB). Utilizing fluorescence microscopy (FM), bending beam rheometer (BBR), and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), the study assesses the aging resistance and modification mechanisms of Sasobit/REO on SBRAB. The findings indicate that the incorporation of Sasobit/REO composites more effectively reduces the mix preparation temperature than either component alone. The preparation of Sasobit/REO warm mix asphalt mixtures is feasible at temperatures 20°C lower than those required for traditional hot mixtures. These composites also enhance the performance of SBRAB at both high and low temperatures, counteracting the adverse effects associated with the individual use of Sasobit or REO. This reduced short-term aging temperature is beneficial in lessening the negative impact of high temperatures on SBRAB’s performance. Moreover, the addition of Sasobit/REO composites significantly improves the thermal cracking resistance of SBRAB mixtures. The study also demonstrates that Sasobit/REO enhances the short-term and long-term aging resistance of SBRAB, paving the way for the broader application of this novel warm mix additive in the asphalt industry. The addition of fibers to asphalt mixtures has the potential to improve the resistance of asphalt mixtures to cracking and permanent deformation (rutting). However, the state (distribution) of fibers in the asphalt mix is critical parameter in determining performance enhancement. This study evaluated the impact of different laboratory mixing methods (mainly Hobart and bucket) on fiber distribution and selected a method comparable to plant-produced fiber-reinforced mixes. The laboratory performance of plant-mixed lab-compacted (PMLC) and lab-mixed lab-compacted (LMLC) fiber-reinforced mixtures was compared. Four types of laboratory and plant mixtures [unreinforced, polyolefin and aramid (PFA) fibers at 0.05% dosage, and Sasobit-coated aramid (SCA) fibers at 0.01% and 0.02% dosages] were produced to compare the laboratory performance of asphalt mixtures. The cracking resistance [evaluated using indirect tensile strength (ITS) and semicircular bend (SCB) tests], rutting susceptibility [evaluated using flow number (FN) and the Hamburg wheel tracking test (HWTT)], durability (evaluated using Cantabro loss), and fatigue (evaluated using a uniaxial fatigue test) performance of control and fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures were evaluated. Among laboratory mixing methods, a bucket mixer was selected to produce LMLC samples because it produced the maximum fiber distribution (87% of fibers in the individual state). Laboratory performance testing results showed that PFA-reinforced mixtures enhanced the rutting performance regardless of mixing method. The mixtures with PFA 0.05% and SCA 0.01% fibers were highly durable and had better dynamic modulus (|E*|) at low frequency and high temperature. Cracking performance was improved with the addition of SCA fibers into the mix; however, fiber-reinforced mixes (PFA 0.05% and SCA 0.01%) had higher fatigue damage tolerance, except SCA 0.02% reinforced mix. The laboratory bucket mixing method is representative of plant-produced fiber-reinforced mixtures, and laboratory performance results were consistent for laboratory bucket and plant produced mixtures. This paper showcases laboratory mixing method equivalent to fiber distribution that produce fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures comparable to those produced at an asphalt plant. Different laboratory mixing equipment, including Hobart and bucket mixers, was used to produce fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures in the laboratory. Aramid fibers were added into these mixers after separation by hand. In addition, the same fiber-reinforced mixtures were produced at a batch plant for comparison purpose. Fibers and binder were extracted from all mixtures and individual fibers (indicating better fiber distribution) were quantified. According to the results, the use of a bucket mixer led to better fiber distribution within the produced asphalt mixtures than did a Hobart mixer. Laboratory performance comparison results showed that the mixes produced using the bucket mixer had identical results to plant-produced mixtures. Hence, using a bucket mixer and introducing aramid fibers after hand separation is an effective way to produce plant-representative fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures. Focusing on the comparison of aging resistance between styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt (SBSMA) and crumb rubber modified asphalt binders (CRMA), the influences of aging on rheological properties and microstructural characteristics of different modified asphalts were investigated in this work. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) tests were carried out, and the variations in rheological properties for different modified asphalts after the rotating thin film oven test (RTFOT) were analyzed with the rutting factor aging index (RAI) and creep rate aging index (CAI). By using Fluorescence microscopy (FM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the evolutions of microstructure and chemical composition for two modified asphalts were analyzed with carbonyl index growth rate (CIR) and sulfoxide index growth rate (SIR). Then, The relationships between CIR/SIR and RAI/CAI were established to show the correlation between the deterioration of macroscopic performance and the evolution of micro-structure. The results indicated that the aging degree of asphalt increases with elevated temperatures, leading to decreasing low-temperature performance while improving high-temperature performance. Nevertheless, SBSMA exhibited strong sensitivity to aging temperature. Under thermo-oxidative aging, the RAI and CAI of SBSMA were lower than those of CRMA, whereas the regularities of CIR and SIR were opposite, indicating that CRMA was superior to SBSMA in terms of anti-aging properties due to the rupture of the cross-linked network structure of SBSMA. However, CRMA experienced aging accompanied by full swelling, and thus, relatively minor performance declined. This work aimed to investigate the effects of aging on the microstructures and rheological properties of modified asphalt with a GO/SBS composite, since the styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer is potentially compatible with graphene oxide (GO). The GO/SBS composites, which were used as a kind of modifier, were prepared via the solution-blending method. GO/SBS composites with varying GO contents were employed to prepare the GO/SBS-compound-modified asphalt (GO/SBS-MA). Then, the GO/SBS-MA underwent PAV (pressure aging vessel) or UV (ultraviolet) aging tests to simulate different aging circumstances. The microstructures of the asphalt binders were studied using FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) and AFM (atomic force microscope) tests. Moreover, DSR (dynamic shear rheometer) and BBR (bending beam rheometer) experiments were carried out to investigate the rheological properties of the GO/SBS-MA. The results showed that the addition of GO improved the high-temperature stability of the asphalt binder while slightly impairing its performance at low temperatures. GO restrained the formation of carbonyl and sulfoxide groups as well as the breakdown of C=C bonds in the polybutadiene (PB) segment, promoting the anti-aging performance of GO/SBS-MA. Furthermore, the interactions between the GO/SBS and the asphalt binder resulted in the formation of needle-like aggregates, enhancing the stability of the asphalt binder. The asphalt binders with a higher content of graphene oxide (GO) exhibited not only a better high-temperature performance, but also a better aging resistance. It was concluded that the macroscopic properties and microstructures were significantly affected by GO, and a moderate increase in the amount of GO could contribute to a better aging resistance for GO/SBS-MA. Biomasses are environmentally friendly additives that lower pollution in pavement engineering because of their biodegradability. On the other hand, to build a safe, long-lasting pavement, rutting prevention is crucial. This study provides a comprehensive review of the efficacy of biomass as recyclable materials in reducing rutting and enhancing characteristics of asphalt mixtures. According to findings, the hydrocarbon polymer properties of lignin and biomass ash improve asphalt binder consistency, hardness, and function at high temperatures. The results showed that biochar, due to its solid shape, enhances the stiffness and viscosity of the mixtures. The high-temperature performance of asphalt binder is improved by bioshell waste, which increases rutting parameters. Thus, biomass like ash, lignin, and biochar can increase asphalt binder rheology and rutting resistance due to chemical forces such as Van der Waals and hydrogen ions. The macroscopic and microscopic investigation also shows higher interaction and better adhesion in bioasphalt. However, asphalt binders containing bio-oil exhibited no unique behaviors due to their lubricant impact. Based on the estimation of the life cycle assessment (LCA), it was determined that biomass utilization has the potential to decrease the cost and CO2 emissions of pavement engineering by as much as 10% and more than three times, respectively. The influence of surface modification on the properties of bagasse fibers and asphalt binders/mixtures was investigated. Bagasse fibers were modified by single, binary, and ternary methods with hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium chlorite, respectively. The physical and chemical properties of bagasse fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and an adsorption test, respectively. The rheological properties of asphalt binders with bagasse fibers or lignin fibers were analyzed by the dynamic shear rheometer test and bending beam rheometer test. In addition, the performance of asphalt mixtures with bagasse fibers or lignin fibers were evaluated by a wheel rutting test, bending test at a low temperature, and water stability test, respectively. In conclusion, the hydrophilic functional groups on the fiber surface were partially eliminated by modification, facilitating the degradation of different fiber components. Furthermore, the degree of fibrillation was improved, and more interfaces with asphalt components were formed, thus enhancing the high-temperature deformation resistance of asphalt binders, but slightly impairing its low-temperature performance. Among all modification methods, the ternary composite modification exerted important influences on fiber structure, oil absorption, and rheological properties of asphalt binders, significantly enhancing the performance of asphalt mixtures. The aging of asphalt-binder during long-term use is an important reason for the decline in road performance of asphalt mixtures. In this study, waste vegetable oil (fried for 1-2h) was investigated as a rejuvenator of asphalt-binder. The optimisation effect of waste vegetable oil on the performance of asphalt-binder with different aging degrees (RTFOT, PAV15/20/48h) was evaluated by testing their conventional physical properties, high-temperature properties, and low-temperature properties. The molecular dynamics method was used to construct models, and the diffusion properties, solubility properties, adsorption energy, and asphaltene aggregation were calculated. The influences of linoelaidic acid and oleic acid molecules on aged asphalt-binder molecules were evaluated. The changes in the functional groups of the aged asphalt-binder after the addition of waste vegetable oil were analyzed by infrared spectrometry, and the changes in the microstructure of the aged asphalt-binder surface were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that waste vegetable oil could regenerate aged asphalt-binder and significantly improve their physical and high-/low-temperature properties. Waste vegetable oil molecules are compatible with aged asphalt-binder molecules, improve their diffusion behaviour, enhance their adsorption capacity, and slightly reduce the aggregation of asphaltenes. This study aims to summarize design indexes for rich bottom layer mixtures (RBLMs) and design asphalt mixtures with superior performance to reduce reflective cracks and fatigue cracking resulting from semi-rigid base cracking in the asphalt layer. First, this study synthesizes the research results about RBLMs and introduces the related design indexes. After that, using ABAQUS 6.13, finite element analysis was performed to analyze the change in bottom stress when the base cracked and the interlayer bond weakened. SBS-modified asphalt mixtures (SMMs) and composite-modified asphalt mixtures (CMMs) were subsequently developed as RBLMs utilizing the Marshall test method and applied on a test road. The research findings reveal that design indexes for RBLMs include a volume of air voids (VVs) within the range of 2.0%–3.0%, a maximum flexural strain exceeding 3500 με, and a dynamic stability surpassing 1000 cycles/mm. Both mixtures satisfy the design requirements, with the CMM demonstrating superior performance and offering promising application prospects. The fatigue phenomenon significantly weakens road pavement due to repeated reloading. To enhance fatigue resistance, numerous studies have explored various additives in asphalt mixtures. This review focuses on key variables influencing the effectiveness of additives, including fibers, polymers, nanomaterials, waste materials, and biomaterials, in improving the fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. The study initially identifies different additives and fatigue testing methods used for asphalt mixtures. It evaluates the impact of factors such as modifier content and size, base asphalt binder type, mixing processes, dispersion behavior, and testing conditions on the fatigue behavior of modified asphalt mixtures. The cost-effectiveness and environmental impact of additive application have also been assessed. Additionally, research gaps and future prospects for modified asphalt mixes are outlined. Existing studies demonstrate the benefits of additives like basalt fiber, polyester fiber, styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), nanosilica, crumb rubber, and biooils in enhancing the fatigue life of pavement constructions. However, challenges exist in the application of modifiers due to limited practical implications and insufficient knowledge. Further research is needed on factors such as additives' dispersity, compatibility, aging resistance, economic viability, and modifying mechanisms in morphological and micromechanical aspects to enhance the fatigue performance of the modified asphalt mixture. This study explores the impact of adding waste vehicular crumb rubber to the commercially available warm mix additives Sasobit® and Zycotherm® on modified asphalt binders' physical and rheological properties. Various concentrations of crumb rubber (0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) were introduced to asphalt binder samples with 2% and 4% Sasobit and 1.5% and 3% Zycotherm. The investigation employed conventional tests (penetration and softening point) and advanced mechanical characterization tests, including Superpave rotational viscosity (RV), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), DSR multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR), DSR linear amplitude sweep (LAS), and Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR). Traditional tests measured the asphalt consistency, while workability was assessed through the RV test. The results showed that the Zycotherm binders experienced a more significant penetration reduction than the Sasobit binders. Additionally, an increased crumb rubber content consistently elevated the softening point and rotational viscosity, enhancing the complex shear modulus (G*) values. Rubberized binders exhibited an improved rutting performance and low-temperature PG grades. Increasing the crumb rubber content enhanced fatigue life, with Z1.5CR20 and S2CR20 demonstrating the longest fatigue lives among the Zycotherm and Sasobit binders, respectively. This manuscript presents a comprehensive study on the sustainable optimization of asphalt mixtures tailored for regions prone to flooding. The research addresses the challenges associated with water damage to asphalt pavements by incorporating innovative additives. The study centers on incorporating recycled Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and a tailored Carnauba–Soybean Oil Additive, advancing asphalt mixtures with a Control mix, LDPE (5%) + Control, and LDPE (5%) + 3% Oil + Control. A critical aspect of the research involves subjecting these mixtures to 30 wetting and drying cycles, simulating the conditions prevalent in tropical flood-prone areas. The incorporation of innovative additives in asphalt mixtures has demonstrated significant improvements across various performance parameters. Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) tests revealed enhanced tensile strength, with the LDPE (5%) + 3% Oil-modified mixture exhibiting an impressive TSR of 85.7%. Dynamic Modulus tests highlighted improved rutting resistance, showcasing a remarkable increase to 214 MPa in the LDPE (5%) with a 3% Oil-modified mixture. The Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) test demonstrated increased fracture resistance and energy absorption, particularly in the LDPE (5%) with 3% Oil-modified mixture. Hamburg Wheel-Tracking (HWT) tests indicated enhanced moisture resistance and superior rutting resistance at 20,000 cycles for the same mixture. Cantabro tests underscored improved aggregate shatter resistance, with the LDPE (5%) + 3% Oil-modified mixture exhibiting the lowest weight loss rate at 9.820%. Field tests provided real-world insights, with the LDPE (5%) + 3% Oil mixture displaying superior stability, a 61% reduction in deflection, and a 256% improvement in surface modulus over the control mixture. A wide variety of additives are used to improve the performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA). Among these materials, styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) elastomer is one of the most commonly used additives. In this study, in addition to the SBS, the newly produced 711 and 601 elastomers were used as an alternative. Modified binders were prepared by adding three different elastomers in three different ratios (2%, 3%, and 4%) to pure bitumen. The HMA samples were prepared by mixing the modified binders and pure binder with the aggregate pile that is in a certain gradation. Subsequently, the mechanical and fracture properties of these mixture samples were investigated. Marshall stability, resistance to moisture damage (tensile ratio), indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM), and indirect tensile fatigue test were performed on all the prepared mixture samples. In addition, semi-circular HMA samples with two different notch depths, 1 cm, and 2 cm, were obtained and their fracture properties were evaluated with different fracture mechanics approaches. The fracture performance test was evaluated with linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and elastic–plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM). As a result, fracture toughness and J-integral values were obtained. The results showed that all three elastomers exhibited higher mechanical performance compared to the pure mixture while the highest performances were observed in the mixtures containing 611. When the additives are evaluated among themselves, the ranking is 611, 701, and SBS, respectively. A full understanding of bitumen fatigue cracking behavior is extremely important as this phenomenon has a considerable influence on bituminous pavement performance. The current framework for assessing this asphalt binder property is inconsistent in ranking bitumen fatigue performance in terms of the failure definition and damage characteristic curve (DCC) analysis. This study used four different types of asphalt binders: neat asphalt (NA), self-healing thermoplastic polyurethane (STP)-modified bitumen, self-healing poly (dimethyl siloxane) crosslinked with urea bond (IPA1w)-modified bitumen, and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified bitumen (SBSB). All the bitumens were subjected to short-term and long-term aging, and they were also tested by utilizing the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test and the simplified viscoelastic continuum damage (S-VECD) model. LAS and S-VECD procedures were used to apply the newly proposed and current frameworks in order to analyze bitumen performance. The current framework showed that the bitumens that used a higher number of loading cycles (N) to reach their failure points ( N f ) failed to exhibit greater fatigue performances in terms of DCC analysis. The developed framework (mainly based on the damage intensity [S] instead of N) was used to solve the inconsistency between the failure definition and DCC assessment in ranking bitumen performance. Additionally, the current framework (failure criterion) presented two R2 values below 0.1, but the developed framework (failure criterion) showed that all R2 values were greater than 0.9. The developed framework represents a turning point because, for the first time, this type of procedure is mainly being based on S instead of N. With increasing societal attention being directed to resource and environment problems, the research focus on high reclaimed asphalt content mixtures has become pertinent. The degree of asphalt fusion in the thermal regeneration process of a high RAP content reclaimed asphalt mixture has a great influence on its performance. In order to explore the development process of hot in-place recycling mixture performance along with internal asphalt fusion, this study conducted research on a geothermal regeneration mixture with 80% RAP content. Dynamic shear rheology (DSR), infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the fusion of recycled mixture under different placement times (1 day, 4 days, and 7 days), and the road performance and fatigue life of the recycled mixture under different placement times were then studied. The results showed that the fusion degree of old asphalt and new asphalt in a recycled asphalt mixture reached 100%, and gradually increased with the extension of placement time. With the increase in placement time, the high temperature performance of the regenerated mixture gradually decreased, the water stability gradually increased, and the low-temperature performance and fatigue life significantly increased from 1 day to 7 days, by 19% and 32%, respectively. Recycled crumb rubber (RCR) is considered a reliable asphalt modifier and a solution to the problem of scrap tyre recycling. RCR-modified asphalt (RCRMA) typically has good low-temperature performance and storage stability. However, the pre-treatment of crumb rubber (CR) impairs its physical properties, resulting in poor high-temperature performance, which limits the industrial application of RCRMA. In this study, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite RCR was used to modify asphalt, and LDPE/RCR-composite-modified asphalt (L-RCRMA) was produced to compensate for the deficiencies in the high-temperature performance of RCRMA. The comprehensive physical properties of L-RCRMA were elucidated using tests such as the conventional properties, rotational viscosity, and rheological tests. The results showed that the incorporation of LDPE improved the high-temperature stability and rutting resistance of the asphalt, but an excessive amount of LDPE impaired the low-temperature performance and storage stability of L-RCRMA. Therefore, it is necessary to control the amount of LDPE to balance the performance of the asphalt. On this basis, we recommend a dosage of 20% for RCR and 1.5% for LDPE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addressed the complex problems of selecting a constitutive model to objectively characterize asphalt mixtures and accurately determine their viscoelastic properties, which are influenced by numerous variables. Inaccuracies in model or parameter determination can result in significant discrepancies between the calculated and measured results of the pavement's structural dynamic response. To address this, the research utilized the physical engineering principles of asphalt pavement structure to perform dynamic modulus tests on three types of high-content rubberized asphalt mixtures (HCRAM) within the surface layer. The research aimed to investigate the influencing factors of the dynamic modulus and establish a comprehensive master curve. This study also critically evaluated the capabilities of three viscoelastic models—the three-parameter solid model, the classical Maxwell model, and the classical Kelvin model—in depicting the dynamic modulus of HCRAM. The findings indicated a negative correlation between the dynamic modulus of the asphalt mixture and temperature, while a positive association exists between the loading frequency and temperature, with the impact of the loading frequency diminishing as the temperature increases. Notably, the three-parameter solid model was identified as the most accurate in describing the viscoelastic properties of the HCRAM. Furthermore, the dynamic response calculations revealed that most indexes in the surface layer's dynamic response are highest when evaluated using the three-parameter viscoelastic model, underscoring its potential to enhance the pavement performance's predictive accuracy. Using waste plastics in asphalt mixtures could be an exploratory way to dispose of waste plastics. This study aims to investigate the microscopic properties between asphalt and polyethylene (PE) at an extraordinary dosage of 20 wt.%. Various types of PE with different degrees of polymerization (DP) and structural configurations were considered. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to calculate the mechanical parameters, free volume ratio (FVR), and Flory–Huggins parameter of the resulting PE-modified asphalt (PEA). Two types of PEA were made and characterized by fluorescence microscopy. The simulation results indicate that the addition of PE reduces the density of modified asphalt by less than 5%, and a higher density of PEA is associated with a lower FVR. When the FVR is close, the mechanical properties are greatly influenced by the DP and configuration. The DP and the number of chains are the main parameters impacting the compatibility between PE and asphalt, based on the Flory–Huggins parameter analysis. Decreasing the DP of PE (e.g., 50, with a minimum Flory–Huggins parameter and a relative molecular mass of 1300) will significantly increase the compatibility between asphalt and PE. LDPE−2 has better compatibility with asphalt, possibly because LDPE−2 has higher purity. These findings provide valuable insights into plastic thermal cracking and industrial modification practices. To assess the medium-term performance of porous asphalt pavement during service and its influence on tire/pavement noise level, a seven-year continuous observation and data analysis study was conducted. Key performance indicators were measured and calculated by using automated pavement technology testing equipment. The noise levels were tested by using the on-board sound intensity (OBSI) method on three types of porous asphalt pavements (PUC-10, PAC-13, and PUC-10 + PAC-13) and one dense thin layer course (DTC) for comparison. The findings indicated that the Damage Rate (DR) and Surface Friction Coefficient (SFC) of porous asphalt pavements diminished greatly over time, while the International Roughness Index (IRI) and Rut Depth (RD) remained relatively stable. The two-layer porous asphalt pavement showed the largest noise reduction over the medium-term. Compared to DTC, the OBSI noise levels of these structures were lower by 2.09 dB, 1.53 dB, and 2.88 dB, respectively. The OBSI was found to be closely correlated with the SFC, IRI, test speed, lane, and pavement type. The RD had a notable effect on the OBSI in PUC-10 pavements. In PUC-10 + PAC-13 pavements, a significant linear relationship was observed between the OBSI and SFC. This is mainly because of the polishing of the coarse aggregates, which leads to micro-texture reduction, high frequency noise increase, and SFC decrease. This study makes a valuable contribution to understanding the laws of porous asphalt pavement performance changes and the relationship between tire/pavement noise and pavement characteristics. To address the issue of bad compatibility between a single polymer modifier and asphalt and high preparation cost, the composite modified asphalt with polyphosphoric acid (PPA) and SBS as a modifier was prepared. Basic properties, viscosity characteristics, high-temperature and low-temperature rheological performance, and aging-resistant performance of SBS/PPA composite modified asphalt were comprehensively evaluated, and the best content of PPA was obtained through the experimental results below. By performing an infrared spectrum test and a scanning electron microscope test, structural changes and modifying mechanisms of composite modified asphalt were analyzed. The results indicate the optimal PPA content is 0.75%. After adding PPA, the penetration and ductility of composite modified asphalt were reduced, while the softening point increased. At 135 °C, the viscosity was 1.2 times that of SBS modified asphalt. The average weight loss ratio was 0.163%. When the content of PPA was 0.75% and 1%, the rutting factor increased significantly. Therefore, PPA can not only improve the thermal oxidation aging resistance of asphalt, it can also improve the shear resistance, high-temperature performance, and temperature sensitivity of asphalt. Between 1027 and 1150 cm−1, the composite modified asphalt forms a new absorption peak, and from 1610 cm−1, the absorption peak presents an upward trend, suggesting that PPA reacts chemically with asphalt, produces the new substance, and also increases a large number of hydrocarbon components with chain structure. The surface appearance of the compound modified asphalt gradually presents a smooth wrinkle state due to the increase of PPA, so the issue of easy segregation of SBS in asphalt is improved. Because of the fast deterioration speed of the surface function of conventional asphalt pavement, thin overlayer with many advantages has been applied to the pavement surface. However, due to problems such as insufficient stripping resistance and cracking resistance, the performance of the thin overlayer needs to be further improved. To achieve this target, basalt fiber was introduced into two types of thin overlayer asphalt mixtures (Open graded friction course, OGFC-5, and Stone matrix asphalt mixture, SMA-5). The wheel tracking test and uniaxial penetration test for high temperature deformation resistance, low temperature bending beam test and indirect tensile asphalt (IDEAL) cracking test for cracking resistance, cantabro test for stripping resistance, and friction coefficient test for skid resistance were conducted to evaluate various performance of thin overlayer asphalt mixtures, along with the dynamic modulus test for dynamic mechanical response. The results showed that adding basalt fiber could enhance the high temperature deformation resistance, low temperature cracking resistance, intermediate temperature cracking resistance and stripping resistance of the thin overlayer, while having no significant impact on skid resistance. Furthermore, adding basalt fiber could increase the modulus in the high temperature region and decrease the modulus in the low temperature region of the thin overlayer asphalt mixtures, indicating thin overlayer with basalt fiber presenting superior both high temperature and low temperature performance. A novel approach for the fracture characterization of soft adhesive materials using spiral cracking patterns is presented in this study. This research particularly focuses on hydrocarbon polymeric materials, such as asphalt binders. Ten different asphalt materials with distinct fracture characteristics were investigated. An innovative integrated experimental–computational framework coupling acoustic emissions (AE) approach in conjunction with a machine learning-based Digital Image Analysis (DIA) method was employed to precisely determine the crack geometry and characterize the material fracture behavior. Cylindrical-shaped samples (25 mm in diameter and 20 mm in height) bonded to a rigid substrate were employed as the testing specimens. A cooling rate of −1 °C/min was applied to produce the spiral cracks. Various image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and regression were utilized in the DIA to automatically analyze the spiral patterns. A new parameter, "Spiral Cracking Energy (ESpiral)", was introduced to assess the fracture performance of soft adhesives. The compact tension (CT) test was conducted at −20 °C with a loading rate of 0.2 mm/min to determine the material's fracture energy (Gf). The embrittlement temperature (TEMB) of the material was measured by performing an AE test. This study explored the relationship between the spiral tightness parameter ("b"), ESpiral, Gf, and TEMB of the material. The findings of this study showed a strong positive correlation between the ESpiral and fracture energies of the asphalt materials. Furthermore, the results indicated that both the spiral tightness parameter ("b") and the embrittlement temperature (TEMB) were negatively correlated with the ESpiral and Gf parameters. The modifying effects of polymer on bitumen low-temperature performance are substantially compromised by the thermal breakdown of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) polymer during bitumen mixture production operations. The efficacy of the utilization of Sasobit/waste cooking oil (Sasobit/WCO) as a warm-mix additive has been demonstrated in mitigating the adverse consequences of thermal aging on SBR-modified bitumen binder (SB) while preserving the binder's original performance characteristics. However, few studies have been conducted to further investigate the rheological properties and aging resistance of SB modified with Sasobit/WCO compounds. In this work, three additives—Sasobit, WCO, and Sasobit/WCO composite—were selected, and their effects on the physical and rheological characteristics of SB as well as the temperatures at which the mixtures were prepared were assessed. In addition, by using dynamic shear rheometers (DSR) and bending beam rheometers (BBR), the effects of this innovative warm-mix addition on the performance grade (PG) and aging resistances of SB were evaluated. According to the results, Sasobit/WCO composites outperform Sasobit and WCO in lowering the mixture preparation temperature. Sasobit/WCO also improves both the high- and low-temperature performance of SB simultaneously. Compared to hot-mix asphalt mixtures, the addition of Sasobit/WCO reduces the preparation temperature of the bitumen mixtures by 19 °C, which in turn helps to minimize the negative effects of temperature aging on the functioning of the SB. Additionally, the Sasobit/WCO composite addition can improve the SB mixture's resistance to thermal cracking. After the introduction of Sasobit/WCO, the high-temperature PG of SB was raised by two levels, regardless of whether the warm-mix impact was taken into account. This study aims to assess the effect of adding lignin waste, a by-product of bioethanol production from forest biomass, to asphalt concrete to improve its performance. After adjusting the lignin content based on preliminary Marshall tests, 20% of this by-product by mass of bitumen was added to the asphalt concrete blends via the dry method. This lignin content was suitable to the temperature was decreased 40 °C compared to the usual mixing temperature, thus allowing the production of warm-mix asphalt concrete (WMA) without any other additive. Tests on a gyratory compactor assessed the workability of the studied asphalt concrete, allowing us to obtain these findings. Moreover, lignin improved moisture damage and adhesion resistance between the binder film and the aggregate particles' surface. The behaviour at high temperatures was also enhanced, resulting in better resistance to permanent deformation. These promising laboratory results show us an opportunity to create value for this type of by-product in substituting commercial additives for asphalt concrete, such as organic wax or adhesion promoters, to allow the production of warm-mix asphalt concrete with improved properties. Widespread interest has been drawn to the use of solid waste fillers as a partial replacement for natural fillers in high-performance asphalt mixtures in recent years. However, variations in the material properties of solid waste fillers remain a problem for the recycling method. To address this issue, the limestone powder in asphalt mixtures was replaced with three solid waste fillers, including steel slag powder, tailings powder and calcium carbide slag powder in this study. The chemical composition of the fillers was first characterized to assess the homogeneity of the material. Then, a dense-graded asphalt mixture (AC) and a stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixture were designed, produced and characterized for wet stability. The results show that the asphalt mixtures with solid waste fillers were superior to limestone powder (LP) asphalt mixtures in terms of resistance to water damage, and the steel slag powder showed the best improvement in moisture stability of the asphalt mixtures. The optimum substitution of solid waste filler for limestone filler was 25%. With the addition of anti-stripping agents, the moisture stability of the asphalt mixture with limestone filler was also greatly enhanced. On the contrary, a marginal enhancement was observed in the moisture stability of asphalt mixtures using solid waste fillers. Solid waste fillers can be used in asphalt mixtures and have a similar function as that of anti-stripping agents. The cracking of cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) reflects to the asphalt layer, which is one of the reasons for the failure of pavement performance and structure. Adding asphalt emulsion to CSM can effectively prevent the formation of cracks. The primary purpose of this article is to reveal the effect of asphalt emulsions on the performance of CSM by adding different contents of asphalt emulsion. For this purpose, tests of unconfined compressive strength (UCS), flexural tensile strength (FTS), elastic modulus, and frost resistance were performed on CSM with gradations of CSM-5 and CSM-10 (the maximum particle sizes of the macadam in the gradation composition are 5 mm and 10 mm), respectively. The test results showed that the UCS of CSM decreased with the increment of asphalt emulsion content. The FTS and elastic modulus of CSM increased with the content of asphalt emulsion. Based on the FTS test results, the frost resistance coefficient Km1, defined according to the CSM splitting strength prior to and subsequent to freeze–thaw, was used to evaluate the frost resistance. The test results showed that the frost resistance of CSM improved with the increase in asphalt emulsion content for the same cement content. In conclusion, adding asphalt emulsion to CSM has positive effects on the FTS, elastic modulus, and frost resistance. Therefore, for the purpose of maintaining the UCS value of CSM, the content of cement should be considered at the same time as the controlling of the content of asphalt emulsion. In order to address the high preparation cost of styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) modified asphalt, four kinds of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) content (0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% PPA by weight of the matrix asphalt) were selected to prepare composite modified asphalt with better high-temperature performance. The physical properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by conventional performance tests. The rheological properties of composite modified asphalt were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test and bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. The synergistic modification mechanism of PPA and SBS was revealed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test. The results show that with the increase of PPA content, the penetration of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt is reduced by 20.92%, 25.07% and 28.94%, respectively, compared with matrix asphalt, and the softening point is increased by 5.46%, 22.69% and 34.03%, respectively. In addition, PPA can improve the thermal oxidative aging resistance of asphalt. PPA can improve the shear resistance, high-temperature performance and temperature sensitivity of asphalt. At 82 °C, compared with SBS modified asphalt, the phase angle of PPA/SBS composite modified asphalt can be decreased by 8.63%, 13.23% and 19.24%, respectively, and G*/sinδ can be increased by 41.97%, 67.62% and 70.97%, respectively. SBS mainly exists in asphalt in the form of physical blending, and PPA has a new chemical reaction with asphalt, which increases the macromolecules and chain hydrocarbon components in asphalt, and the macroscopic performance is the improvement of high-temperature performance of asphalt. Lawele Granular Asphalt (LGA) is a Buton asphalt product derived from the Lawele area in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Although it possesses great potential, LGA utilization has not been fully maximized. One of the challenges is the need for a modifier to extract asphalt from the minerals within LGA. Candlenut oil is a potential modifier that can be used with LGA in Cold Paving Hot Mix Asbuton (CPHMA) due to its similar polarity. Therefore, the aim of this research is to evaluate the performance of Lawele Granular Asphalt (LGA) with candlenut oil as a modifier in Cold Paving Hot Mix Asbuton (CPHMA). The Marshall test was conducted to assess the performance of CPHMA with candlenut oil as a modifier. Furthermore, several variations were examined, including the quantity of the modifier, duration of heating and compaction, heating temperature, and storage duration, using seven different mixtures and three storage periods. The optimal composition produced a Marshall value of 687.68 kg, which increased with a longer mixing duration and higher heating temperature. The results showed that the Marshall value met the standards for CPHMA in Indonesia, as well as for VIM, VMA, VFB, and Flow values. The low flow indicated the density of the CPHMA pavement, while the MQ value showed its ability to withstand deformation of 200.13 kg/1 cm. The behavior of Marshall resistance was supported by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, which exhibited similar compound groups between asphalt and the leached results of LGA with candlenut oil, indicating the presence of asphalt (binder). There was a slight decrease in the Marshall value after a 7-day duration, showing an increase after a 21-day storage period. Therefore, candlenut oil served as a viable alternative modifier for LGA. Many researchers use fiber to improve the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures, but research concerning the effects of fiber on fracture behavior is limited. The fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures with various fiber types (basalt fiber, glass fiber, and polyester fiber) and contents (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5%) has been studied using the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) in conjunction with digital image correlation (DIC) technology. The evaluation indexes used in the test included crack initiation energy (Gif), crack energy (Gf), splitting tensile strength (RT), cracking tolerance index (CTindex), and the real-time tensile strain (Exx) obtained using digital image correlation technology. The results showed that despite the fiber type, the increase of fiber content resulted in first, an increase, and then, a decrease of the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures, indicating the presence of optimum fiber content—specifically, 0.4%, 0.3%, and 0.3% for basalt fiber, glass fiber, and polyester fiber, respectively. The development of real-time tensile strain, obtained based on digital image correlation technology, could be divided into two stages: slow-growth stage and rapid-expansion stage. In addition, asphalt mixture with basalt fiber presented the best cracking resistance at both the slow-growth and rapid-expansion stages. This research is helpful in understanding the effects of fiber type and content on the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures and has certain reference significance for the application of fiber in asphalt mixtures. Waste tire pyrolysis has the advantages of economy, environmental protection, and high energy conversion rate; however, there is little research on the application of pyrolysis carbon black (PCB), which accounts for a high percentage of pyrolysis products, in asphalt and asphalt mixtures. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of PCB ash on the physical properties of asphalt binders, the effect of coupling treatment on the dispersibility of PCB-modified asphalt, and the effect of mixing process on the road properties of PCB asphalt mixtures. The physical properties of co-pyrolytic carbon black (CPCB) and low-temperature vacuum pyrolytic carbon black (VPCB) blended with 70# base asphalt and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)–modified asphalt (SBSMA) were evaluated. Mechanisms behind the differences in the dispersion of CPCB in asphalt were revealed. In addition, the road performance of different PCB asphalt mixtures was compared. The results indicate that the optimum admixtures of VPCB and CPCB in 70# base asphalt are recommended to be 20% and 10%–15%, respectively, and the optimum admixtures of VPCB and CPCB in SBSMA are 10%–25% and 10%–20%, respectively. Acid washing reduces the ash content of the CPCB surface, and coupling agent can promote the dispersion of CPCB in asphalt. The wet-prepared CPCB-modified asphalt mixtures showed overall better road performance than the dry-prepared ones. Reflective cracking is a common distress of old pavement overlaid with an asphalt layer. The asphalt rubber stress-absorbing membrane interlayer can effectively mitigate and prevent reflective cracking. However, the existing test methods and evaluation indices for the crack resistance of the asphalt rubber stress-absorbing membrane interlayer are insufficient and unsystematic. They do not account for the significant effect of gradation parameters on the crack resistance in a comprehensive way. Therefore, this research aims to explore the impact of gradation parameters on the performance of the asphalt rubber stress-absorbing membrane interlayer. Based on the Chinese and U.S. standards, three kinds of 10 types of gradation were selected, forming a total of seven groups. The asphalt rubber stress-absorbing membrane interlayer was subjected to −10 °C and 15 °C beam bending test, low-temperature semi-circular bend test, crack expansion semi-circular bend test, and overlay test to evaluate its cracking resistance. The correlation and influence law between the key sieve hole method, graded fractal method, and Bayley method parameters of different grades and beam bending test, low-temperature semi-circular bend test, crack expansion semi-circular bend test, and overlay test indexes were quantitatively analyzed by the coefficient of variation and Pearson correlation analysis method. The results showed that the performance of the mixtures with different gradation ranges varied significantly in different tests, as indicated by the maximum difference of 56.07% in stress absorption. This implied that gradation is a critical factor that affects the stress absorption performance of mixes. The different sensitivities of different tests to the parameters of the key sieve method, the graded fractal method, and the Bailey method indicated that the stress absorption performance was affected by a combination of factors. Therefore, in order to evaluate and optimize the stress absorption performance, it was necessary to comprehensively consider the interactions among the parameters of the key sieve method, the graded fractal method, and the Bailey method. The stress absorption performance included crack resistance and crack expansion resistance, which were inversely related and needed to be balanced and optimized during design. The −10 °C beam bending test and crack expansion semi-circular bend tests were more suitable test methods for evaluating stress absorption performance, and maximum flexural–tensile strain, strain energy density, fracture energy, and flexibility index were recommended as evaluation indicators. This research provides a reference for the optimization of the grading design of asphalt rubber stress-absorbing membrane interlayers, and provides test methods and indicators for the evaluation of crack resistance. Phosphorites (PF) have small particle sizes and interesting chemical compositions to be used as filler in asphalt mixtures. The present study assessed the performance that a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) displays when the natural filler (NF) is completely replaced by PF. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were carried out on NF and PF particles. Asphalt mastic was manufactured using a weight ratio of filler (NF and PF) to asphalt binder of 1∶1.2. Penetration, softening point, viscosity, and linear amplitude sweep test were performed on the asphalt mastic. The following tests were carried out on mixes manufactured with NF (control) and PF (HMA-PF): Marshall, indirect tensile strength, Cantabro, resilient modulus, permanent deformation, and fatigue under stress-controlled mode. Additionally, moisture damage resistance was assessed through the tensile strength ratio (TSR) parameter. The HMA-PF mix displayed a better performance in all the evaluated properties, without increasing the optimum asphalt binder content. Shingle material can appear as an excess usage due to defective production problems or at the end of their service life. Especially the reuse of shingle materials in bitumen has brought a different approach in terms of sustainability. In this study, the utilization of production shingle waste material in asphalt pavement were investigated. Mechanical properties of hot mix and warm mix asphalt samples involving different amount of production shingle waste (1-6% by weight of the aggregate) were evaluated. Following the determination of optimum rate of shingle waste bitumen content is reduced to decrease both hazardous effects of bitumen and production cost. Marshall Mix Design criteria was employed on determination of maximum reduction on bitumen content and the amount of shingle utilization within the asphalt pavement. As a final analysis, indirect tensile tests were performed on the specimens prepared with determined bitumen content and shingle waste. As a result, it is concluded that, utilization of waste shingles within the asphalt mixture not only benefits the environment and cost but also improves Marshall stability and Marshall quotient of the mixtures. Fatigue cracking is a significant cause of failure in flexible pavements at moderate temperatures. Neat bitumen cannot properly perform at all temperatures and environmental conditions due to the increasing traffic volume. Consequently, this study examined the simultaneous usage of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the styrene-ethylene/propylene-styrene (SEPS) polymer as bitumen modifiers. The linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test and surface free energy (SFE) theory were used to determine the rheological characteristics and thermodynamic parameters of neat and modified bitumens, respectively. Using the SEPS nanocomposite up to 6% increased the fatigue life and moisture damage resistance of the asphalt mixtures by improving thermodynamic parameters such as adhesive free energy in dry and wet conditions. According to the LAS results, the modified bitumen outperformed the neat bitumen in terms of fatigue life under different strain levels. The fatigue life of the asphalt mixtures also decreased as the temperature increased from 10 to 20°C. However, for the mixtures containing the SEPS nanocomposite, the reduction in fatigue life was less noticeable due to the lower temperature sensitivity of the modified bitumen. The surface performance of basalt aggregate shows a great influence on the interfacial adhesion between basalt aggregate and asphalt binder and further affects the moisture stability of the asphalt mixture. To improve the interfacial adhesion between basalt aggregate and asphalt binder, as well as to increase the moisture stability of asphalt mixture in hot and humid environments, the basalt aggregate surface was hydrophobically modified by silane coupling agents (SCAs). Microscopically, the surface properties of basalt aggregate before and after surface modification by SCAs were characterized by environmental scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, as well as the adhesion work between basalt aggregate and asphalt was calculated. Macroscopically, the moisture stability of the asphalt mixture was verified by boiling test and asphalt mixture tests. Test results indicate that the surface free energy values of basalt aggregates modified by SCAs and the stripping work values are decreased. Additionally, silanols, hydrogen bonds, and fibrous protrusions are introduced to the aggregate surface for improving the compactness of the asphalt-aggregate system. Finally, the loss rates of asphalt film and immersion scattering are decreased, as well as the freeze-thaw splitting tensile strength ratio is increased. This paper studies the merits of applying liquified polyethylene (PE) as a modifier for bitumen. Chemical recycling of PE is often incomplete and generates some amount of waste "PE oil". The viscoelasticity and chemical characteristics of bitumen modified with PE oil were examined using dynamic shear rheometry, infrared spectroscopy, and adhesion measurements in comparison and in conjunction with bitumen modified with wax, which is one of the most common additives in warm-mix bitumen. The study found that PE oil softens bitumen without severely increasing the creep compliance or viscoelastic damping properties. Wax-modified bitumen showed enrichment of crystallized alkanes at the free bitumen surface that negatively impacted adhesion and interface healing. The introduction of PE oil to wax-modified bitumen did not appreciably decrease the fraction of crystallized wax. Thus, PE oil may not be effective as an additive for warm-mix wax-modified bitumen. However, the PE oil showed potential in protecting bitumen against ultraviolet (UV) aging, and it is worth further exploration as an anti-aging agent, or as a rejuvenator for reclaimed asphalt pavement. DaoLu Tiaowen Cailiao (DTC) phase-change materials are important materials for improving the temperature adaptation of asphalt pavements. In order to improve the low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt pavements after adding DTC phase-change materials, basalt fiber-reinforced DTC phase-change asphalt mixtures with different basalt fiber dosages were prepared, and their mechanical properties, horizontal strain, and crack characteristics were analyzed using semicircular bending tests combined with digital-image correlation technology. The study showed that the basalt fiber increased the fracture strength of the phase-change asphalt mixture, delayed its damage time, improved its deformation capacity, reduced the crack development rate and damage degree of the interface, and enhanced its low-temperature crack resistance. The enhancement of low-temperature crack resistance of phase-change asphalt mixtures increased and then decreased, and the best effect was achieved when the dosage of basalt fiber was 3‰, which delayed the damage time of phase-change asphalt mixtures by 42.53 s, slowed down the crack expansion rate by 54.23%, and reduced the fractal dimension (D) and damage factor (Df) by 4.32% and 29.83%, respectively. In conclusion, basalt fibers can enhance the low-temperature crack resistance of phase-change asphalt mixtures, and the optimal dosage of basalt fiber is 3‰. Also, both D and Df showed a positive correlation pattern with KIC , but Df was more closely related to KIC , which shows that the new index Df based on the image analysis method and MATLAB software is reliable. The quality of pavements in tropical climates is negatively affected by the frequent wet and dry cycles during the rainy season, as well as by issues related to overloading from heavy trucks and traffic congestion. Contributing to this deterioration are factors such as acid rainwater, heavy traffic oils, and municipal debris. In light of these challenges, this study aims to assess the viability of a polymer-modified asphalt concrete mixture. This study investigates the feasibility of a polymer-modified asphalt concrete mixture with the addition of 6% crumb rubber powder from waste car tires and 3% epoxy resin to counter the harsh conditions of tropical climate weather. The study involved subjecting test specimens to five to 10 cycles of contaminated water (100% rainwater + 10% used oil from trucks), curing for 12 h, and air drying in a chamber of 50 °C for 12 h to simulate critical curing conditions. The specimens underwent fundamental laboratory performance tests such as the indirect tensile strength test, dynamic modulus test, four points bending test, and Cantabro test, as well as the double load condition in the Hamburg wheel tracking test to determine the effectiveness of the proposed polymer-modified material in actual conditions. The test results confirmed that the simulated curing cycles had a critical impact on the durability of the specimens, with the greater curing cycles leading to a significant drop in the strength of the material. For example, the TSR ratio of the control mixture dropped from 90% to 83% and 76% after five and 10 curing cycles, respectively. Meanwhile, the modified mixture showed a decrease from 93% to 88% and 85% under the same conditions. The test results revealed that the effectiveness of the modified mixture outperformed the conventional condition in all tests, with a more prominent impact observed under overload conditions. Under double conditions in the Hamburg wheel tracking test and a curing condition of 10 cycles, the maximum deformation of the control mixture sharply increased from 6.91 to 22.7 mm, whereas the modified mixture increased from 5.21 to 12.4 mm. Overall, the test results confirm the durability of the polymer-modified asphalt concrete mixture under harsh tropical climate conditions, promoting its application for sustainable pavements, especially in Southeast Asian countries. Climate change has caused a surge in abnormal weather patterns, leading to a rise in cracks, plastic deformation, and pothole damage on road surfaces. In order to fabricate a ready-mix admixture of warm asphalt mixture (WMA) for pothole restoration, this study aimed to develop a neutralized anti-stripping material in pellet form by extruding a combination of slaked lime and a liquid emulsifier additive. Slaked lime (1% by weight of aggregate) was chosen for its ability to enhance moisture resistance, while a liquid emulsifier (wax + vegetable oil + surfactant + water) was added to create a pellet-type stripping inhibitor for WMA. After successfully fabricating the pellet admixture, this study evaluated the performance of two asphalt mixtures: conventional Slaked Lime Hot Mix Asphalt (LHMA) and the Pellet-Type Anti-Stripping Warm Mix Asphalt (PWMA). Several compatibility tests were conducted to evaluate the quality of the developed material. The results showed that the fatigue resistance of the developed material (PWMA) improved by over 20%, indicating an extended fatigue life for the pavement. The LHMA and PWMA met the quality standard for asphalt mixtures, with a TSR value of approximately 83%. Both mixtures demonstrated improved rutting resistance compared to HMA. The PWMA required 16,500 cycles, while the LHMA required 19,650 cycles to reach a settlement of 20 mm, indicating better moisture resistance than the control mix (13,481 cycles). The modified mixture performed properly in the Cantabro test, with loss rates below 20%, indicating their ability to retain their aggregate structure. The PWMA also showed superior resistance to plastic deformation, with a 12.5% lower phase angle (35°) at a reduced frequency of 10−3. In general, the application of PWMA not only prolongs the pavement lifespan but also reduces the production temperature by over 20 °C, leading to lower emissions and energy consumption. As the market for polyethylene consumption continues to expand, the amount of waste polyethylene is also increasing. Modifying asphalt with waste polyethylene (PE) is economical and environmentally friendly. The low-temperature performance and storage stability of PE-modified asphalt has long been an insurmountable problem. The high vinyl acetate (VA) content of ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) and PE blended into asphalt can improve the compatibility of PE and asphalt. It compensates for the high VA content of EVA brought about by the lack of high-temperature resistance to permanent deformation but is still not conducive to the stable storage of PE at high temperatures. The effect of furfural extraction oil, a crosslinking (DCP) agent, a silicone coupling agent (KH-570), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on the rheological properties and compatibility of PE/EVA-modified asphalt was investigated in this study. The conventional physical properties of PE/EVA-modified asphalt were tested after introducing furfural extraction oil, DCP, KH570, and CaCO3 to determine the correlations of these materials. In addition, frequency sweep, multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) were utilized to characterize the rheological properties and fatigue behavior. The results reveal that the addition of suitable ratios of furfural extract oil, DCP, KH-570, and CaCO3 to PE/EVA-modified asphalt produces a remarkable improvement in the viscoelastic characteristics and viscosity compared with PE/EVA-modified asphalt. Furthermore, fluorescence microscopy (FM) was utilized to evaluate the modification mechanism, which shows that PE/EVA undergoes significant crosslinking in asphalt, forming a three-dimensional network structure that dissolves in the asphalt.
