Diagonal groups are one of the classes of finite primitive permutation groups occurring in the conclusion of the O'Nan-Scott theorem. Several of the other classes have been described as the automorphism groups of geometric or combinatorial structures such as affine spaces or Cartesian decompositions, but such structures for diagonal groups have not been studied in general. The main purpose of this paper is to describe and characterise such structures, which we call diagonal semilattices. Unlike the diagonal groups in the O'Nan-Scott theorem, which are defined over finite characteristically simple groups, our construction works over arbitrary groups, finite or infinite. A diagonal semilattice depends on a dimension m and a group T. For m=2, it is a Latin square, the Cayley table of T, though in fact any Latin square satisfies our combinatorial axioms. However, for m≥3, the group T emerges naturally and uniquely from the axioms. (The situation somewhat resembles projective geometry, where projective planes exist in great profusion but higher-dimensional structures are coordinatised by an algebraic object, a division ring.) A diagonal semilattice is contained in the partition lattice on a set Ω, and we provide an introduction to the calculus of partitions. Many of the concepts and constructions come from experimental design in statistics. We also determine when a diagonal group can be primitive, or quasiprimitive (these conditions turn out to be equivalent for diagonal groups). Satisfiability of Boolean circuits is among the most known and important problems in theoretical computer science. This problem is NP-complete in general but becomes polynomial time when restricted either to monotone gates or linear gates. We go outside Boolean realm and consider circuits built of any fixed set of gates on an arbitrary large finite domain. From the complexity point of view this is strictly connected with the problems of solving equations (or systems of equations) over finite algebras. The research reported in this work was motivated by a desire to know for which finite algebras $\mathbf A$ there is a polynomial time algorithm that decides if an equation over $\mathbf A$ has a solution. We are also looking for polynomial time algorithms that decide if two circuits over a finite algebra compute the same function. Although we have not managed to solve these problems in the most general setting we have obtained such a characterization for a very broad class of algebras from congruence modular varieties. This class includes most known and well-studied algebras such as groups, rings, modules (and their generalizations like quasigroups, loops, near-rings, nonassociative rings, Lie algebras), lattices (and their extensions like Boolean algebras, Heyting algebras or other algebras connected with multi-valued logics including MV-algebras). This paper seems to be the first systematic study of the computational complexity of satisfiability of non-Boolean circuits and solving equations over finite algebras. The characterization results provided by the paper is given in terms of nice structural properties of algebras for which the problems are solvable in polynomial time., 50 pages

In a previous paper, we obtained several "compact versions" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem, which allowed us to extrapolate the compactness of linear operators from just one space to the full range of weighted Lebesgue spaces, where these operators are bounded. In this paper, we study the extrapolation of compactness for bilinear operators in terms of bilinear Muckenhoupt weights. As applications, we easily recover and improve earlier results on the weighted compactness of commutators of bilinear Calder\'{o}n-Zygmund operators, bilinear fractional integrals and bilinear Fourier multipliers. More general versions of these results are recently due to Cao, Olivo and Yabuta (arXiv:2011.13191), whose approach depends on developing weighted versions of the Fr\'echet--Kolmogorov criterion of compactness, whereas we avoid this by relying on "softer" tools, which might have an independent interest in view of further extensions of the method., Comment: v3: final version, incorporated referee comments, to appear in Indagationes Mathematicae, 27 pages

Using the approach of so-called c-sequences introduced by the fifth author in his recent work, we give much simpler and shorter proofs of multivalued Perov's type results with respect to the ones presented in the recently published paper by M. Abbas et al. Our proofs improve, complement, unify and enrich the ones from the recent papers. Further, in the last section of this paper, we correct and generalize the well-known Perov's fixed point result. We show that this result is in fact equivalent to Banach's contraction principle.

Although planar quadratic differential systems and their applications have been studied in more than one thousand papers, we still have no complete understanding of these systems. In this paper we have two objectives. First we provide a brief bibliographical survey on the main results about quadratic systems. Here we do not consider the applications of these systems to many areas as in Physics, Chemist, Economics, Biology, … Second we characterize the new class of planar separable quadratic polynomial differential systems. For such class of systems we provide the normal forms which contain one parameter, and using the Poincare compactification and the blow up technique, we prove that there exist 10 non-equivalent topological phase portraits in the Poincare disc for the separable quadratic polynomial differential systems.

The aim of this paper is to generalize results known for the symplectic involutions on K3 surfaces to the order 3 symplectic automorphisms on K3 surfaces. In particular, we will explicitly describe the action induced on the lattice $\Lambda_{K3}$, isometric to the second cohomology group of a K3 surface, by a symplectic automorphism of order 3; we exhibit the maps $\pi_*$ and $\pi^*$ induced in cohomology by the rational quotient map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$, where $X$ is a K3 surface admitting an order 3 symplectic automorphism $\sigma$ and $Y$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient $X/\sigma$; we deduce the relation between the N\'eron--Severi group of $X$ and the one of $Y$. Applying these results we describe explicit geometric examples and generalize the Shioda--Inose structures, relating Abelian surfaces admitting order 3 endomorphisms with certain specific K3 surfaces admitting particular order 3 symplectic automorphisms., Comment: 28 pages. A question of Conca, Rossi, and Valla asks whether every quadratic Gorenstein ring $R$ of regularity three is Koszul. In a previous paper, we use idealization to answer their question, proving that in nine or more variables there exist quadratic Gorenstein rings of regularity three which are not Koszul. In this paper, we study the analog of the Conca-Rossi-Valla question when the regularity of $R$ is four or more. Let $R$ be a quadratic Gorenstein ring having $\mathrm{codim}\, R = c$ and $\mathrm{reg}\, R = r \ge 4$. We prove that if $c = r+1$ then $R$ is always Koszul, and for every $c \geq r+2$, we construct quadratic Gorenstein rings that are not Koszul, answering questions of Matsuda and Migliore-Nagel concerning the $h$-vectors of quadratic Gorenstein rings., Comment: v2 - Minor changes based on referee comments

Given a formal flat meromorphic connection over an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, in a previous paper we established existence of good formal structures and a good Deligne-Malgrange lattice after suitably blowing up. In this paper, we reinterpret and refine these results by introducing some related structures. We consider the turning locus, which is the set of points at which one cannot achieve a good formal structure without blowing up. We show that when the polar divisor has normal crossings, the turning locus is of pure codimension 1 within the polar divisor, and hence of pure codimension 2 within the full space; this had been previously established by Andre in the case of a smooth polar divisor. We also construct an irregularity sheaf and its associated b-divisor, which measure irregularity along divisors on blowups of the original space; this generalizes another result of Andre on the semicontinuity of irregularity in a curve fibration. One concrete consequence of these refinements is a process for resolution of turning points which is functorial with respect to regular morphisms of excellent schemes; this allows us to transfer the result from schemes to formal schemes, complex analytic varieties, and nonarchimedean analytic varieties., 27 pages; v4: refereed version; some technical edits in 2.2

When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify the spectrum $\mathfrak{B}$ of the Cartan subalgebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{S}, c)$. We then show that the quotient groupoid $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ acts on $\mathfrak{B}$, and that the corresponding action groupoid is exactly the Weyl groupoid of the Cartan pair. Lastly we show that, if the quotient map $\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ admits a continuous section, then the Weyl twist is also given by an explicit continuous $2$-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S} \ltimes \mathfrak{B}$., 32 pages

Some mathematical proofs explain why the theorems they prove hold. This paper identifies several challenges for any counterfactual account of explanation in mathematics (that is, any account according to which an explanatory proof reveals how the explanandum would have been different, had facts in the explanans been different). The paper presumes that countermathematicals can be nontrivial. It argues that nevertheless, a counterfactual account portrays explanatory power as too easy to achieve, does not capture explanatory asymmetry, and fails to specify why certain proofs are explanatory and others are not. Greater informativeness about counterfactual dependence can even yield less explanatory power.

Generalizing wavelets by adding desired redundancy and flexibility, framelets (i.e., wavelet frames) are of interest and importance in many applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Several key properties of framelets are high vanishing moments for sparse multiscale representation, fast framelet transforms for numerical efficiency, and redundancy for robustness. However, it is a challenging problem to study and construct multivariate nonseparable framelets, mainly due to their intrinsic connections to factorization and syzygy modules of multivariate polynomial matrices. Moreover, all the known multivariate tight framelets derived from spline refinable scalar functions have only one vanishing moment, and framelets derived from refinable vector functions are barely studied yet in the literature. In this paper, we circumvent the above difficulties through the approach of quasi-tight framelets, which behave almost identically to tight framelets. Employing the popular oblique extension principle (OEP), from an arbitrary compactly supported M-refinable vector function ϕ with multiplicity greater than one, we prove that we can always derive from ϕ a compactly supported multivariate quasi-tight framelet such that: (i) all the framelet generators have the highest possible order of vanishing moments; (ii) its associated fast framelet transform has the highest balancing order and is compact. For a refinable scalar function ϕ (i.e., its multiplicity is one), the above item (ii) often cannot be achieved intrinsically but we show that we can always construct a compactly supported OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight framelet derived from ϕ satisfying item (i). We point out that constructing OEP-based quasi-tight framelets is closely related to the generalized spectral factorization of Hermitian trigonometric polynomial matrices. Our proof is critically built on a newly developed result on the normal form of a matrix-valued filter, which is of interest and importance in itself for greatly facilitating the study of refinable vector functions and multiwavelets/multiframelets. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated framelet transforms with high balancing orders. This deepens our theoretical understanding of multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated fast multiframelet transforms.

The singular value decomposition of a complex matrix is a fundamental concept in linear algebra and has proved extremely useful in many subjects. It is less clear what the situation is over a finite field. In this paper, we classify the orbits of GU m ( q ) × GU n ( q ) on M m × n ( q 2 ) (which is the analog of the singular value decomposition). The proof involves Kronecker’s theory of pencils and the Lang–Steinberg theorem for algebraic groups. Besides the motivation mentioned above, this problem came up in a recent paper of Guralnick et al. (2020) where a concept of character level for the complex irreducible characters of finite, general or special, linear and unitary groups was studied and bounds on the number of orbits was needed. A consequence of this work determines possible pairs of Jordan forms for nilpotent matrices of the form A A ∗ and A ∗ A over a finite field and A A ⊤ and A ⊤ A over arbitrary fields.

The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of examples of minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets, which illustrate certain aspects of this classification. These examples are constructed as actions on rooted trees. The acting groups are countable subgroups of the product or of the wreath product of groups. We discuss applications of our results to the study of attractors of dynamical systems and of minimal sets of foliations., 20 pages, 1 figure. In the first part of the paper, we clarify the connections between several algebraic objects appearing in matroid theory: both partial fields and hyperfields are fuzzy rings, fuzzy rings are tracts, and these relations are compatible with the respective matroid theories. Moreover, fuzzy rings are ordered blueprints and lie in the intersection of tracts with ordered blueprints; we call the objects of this intersection pastures. In the second part, we construct moduli spaces for matroids over pastures. We show that, for any non-empty finite set $E$, the functor taking a pasture $F$ to the set of isomorphism classes of rank-$r$ $F$-matroids on $E$ is representable by an ordered blue scheme $Mat(r,E)$, the moduli space of rank-$r$ matroids on $E$. In the third part, we draw conclusions on matroid theory. A classical rank-$r$ matroid $M$ on $E$ corresponds to a $\mathbb{K}$-valued point of $Mat(r,E)$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is the Krasner hyperfield. Such a point defines a residue pasture $k_M$, which we call the universal pasture of $M$. We show that for every pasture $F$, morphisms $k_M\to F$ are canonically in bijection with $F$-matroid structures on $M$. An analogous weak universal pasture $k_M^w$ classifies weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$. The unit group of $k_M^w$ can be canonically identified with the Tutte group of $M$. We call the sub-pasture $k_M^f$ of $k_M^w$ generated by ``cross-ratios' the foundation of $M$,. It parametrizes rescaling classes of weak $F$-matroid structures on $M$, and its unit group is coincides with the inner Tutte group of $M$. We show that a matroid $M$ is regular if and only if its foundation is the regular partial field, and a non-regular matroid $M$ is binary if and only if its foundation is the field with two elements. This yields a new proof of the fact that a matroid is regular if and only if it is both binary and orientable., 85 pages; some additional material, e.g. a new section 5.6; the terminology has been adapted to the usage in follow-up papers

We study a free boundary problem for a parabolic partial differential equation in which the solution is coupled to the moving boundary through an integral constraint. The problem arises as the hydrodynamic limit of an interacting particle system involving branching Brownian motion with selection, the so-called Brownian bees model which is studied in a companion paper. In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution to the free boundary problem, and we characterise the behaviour of the solution in the large time limit., Comment: 53 pages

We are interested in the McKay quiver $\Gamma(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, followed by $G(r,1,n)$ for $r >1$. Then, using Clifford theory, we can determine the McKay quiver for any $G(r,p,n)$ and thus for all finite irreducible complex reflection groups up to finitely many exceptions. In the second part of the paper we consider a more conceptual approach to McKay quivers of arbitrary finite groups: we define the Lusztig algebra $\widetilde A(G)$ of a finite group $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$, which is Morita equivalent to the skew group ring $A*G$. This description gives us an embedding of the basic algebra Morita equivalent to $A*G$ into a matrix algebra over $A$., Comment: v2: minor revision, final version to appear in Algebr. Represent. We express the Masur-Veech volume and the area Siegel-Veech constant of the moduli space $\mathcal{Q}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ meromorphic quadratic differentials with $n$ simple poles as polynomials in the intersection numbers of $\psi$-classes with explicit rational coefficients. The formulae obtained in this article result from lattice point counts involving the Kontsevich volume polynomials that also appear in Mirzakhani's recursion for the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic boundaries. A similar formula for the Masur-Veech volume (though without explicit evaluation) was obtained earlier by Mirzakhani via completely different approach. Furthermore, we prove that the density of the mapping class group orbit of any simple closed multicurve $\gamma$ inside the ambient set of integral measured laminations computed by Mirzakhani coincides with the density of square-tiled surfaces having horizontal cylinder decomposition associated to $\gamma$ among all square-tiled surfaces in $\mathcal{Q}_{g,n}$. We study the resulting densities (or, equivalently, volume contributions) in more detail in the special case $n=0$. In particular, we compute the asymptotic frequencies of separating and non-separating simple closed geodesics on a closed hyperbolic surface of genus $g$ for small $g$ and we show that for large genera the separating closed geodesics are $\sqrt{\frac{2}{3\pi g}}\cdot\frac{1}{4^g}$ times less frequent., Comment: The current paper (as well as the companion paper arXiv:2007.04740) has grown from arxiv:1908.08611. This paper is a follow-up to the recent paper of Pillichshammer and Sonnleitner (2020) [12] . We show that the isotropic discrepancy of a lattice point set is at most d 2 2 ( d + 1 ) times its spectral test, thereby correcting the dependence on the dimension d and an inaccuracy in the proof of the upper bound in Theorem 2 of the mentioned paper. The major task is to bound the volume of the neighbourhood of the boundary of a convex set contained in the unit cube. Further, we characterize averages of the distance to a lattice point set in terms of the spectral test. As an application, we infer that the spectral test – and with it the isotropic discrepancy – is crucial for the suitability of the lattice point set for the approximation of Sobolev functions.

A concept of emergence was recently introduced in the paper [Berger] in order to quantify the richness of possible statistical behaviors of orbits of a given dynamical system. In this paper, we develop this concept and provide several new definitions, results, and examples. We introduce the notion of topological emergence of a dynamical system, which essentially evaluates how big the set of all its ergodic probability measures is. On the other hand, the metric emergence of a particular reference measure (usually Lebesgue) quantifies how non-ergodic this measure is. We prove fundamental properties of these two emergences, relating them with classical concepts such as Kolmogorov's $\epsilon$-entropy of metric spaces and quantization of measures. We also relate the two types of emergences by means of a variational principle. Furthermore, we provide several examples of dynamics with high emergence. First, we show that the topological emergence of some standard classes of hyperbolic dynamical systems is essentially the maximal one allowed by the ambient. Secondly, we construct examples of smooth area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are extremely non-ergodic in the sense that the metric emergence of the Lebesgue measure is essentially maximal. These examples confirm that super-polynomial emergence indeed exists, as conjectured in the paper [Berger]. The Rosenau–Korteweg-deVries–Kawahara equation describes the dynamics of dense discrete systems or small-amplitude gravity capillary waves on water of a finite depth. In this paper, we prove the well-posedness of the classical solutions for the Cauchy problem.

The aim of this paper is to study, by using the mathematical tools developed by Chałupnik, Touzé, and Van der Kallen, the effect of the Frobenius twist on $\operatorname{Ext}$-group in the category of strict polynomial functors. As an application, we obtain explicit formulas of cohomology of the orthogonal groups and symplectic ones.

In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser for regular and meromorphic 1-forms on good reduction curves, respectively. We then employ tropical geometric techniques due to the first-named author with Rabinoff and Zureick-Brown to convert the Berkovich-Coleman integrals into abelian integrals. Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we call a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturated number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we are mainly interested in the four-point poset called the butterfly. Ferrara, Kay, Kramer, Martin, Reiniger, Smith and Sullivan showed that the saturation number for the butterfly lies between $\log_2{n}$ and $n^2$. We give a linear lower bound of $n+1$. We also prove some other results about the butterfly and the poset $\mathcal N$., Comment: 13 pages

This paper presents a curvature-free version of the Log ( 2 k − 1 ) \text {Log}(2k-1) Theorem of Anderson, Canary, Culler, and Shalen [J. Differential Geometry 44 (1996), pp. 738–782]. It generalizes a result by Hou [J. Differential Geometry 57 (2001), no. 1, pp. 173–193] and its proof is rather straightforward once we know the work by Lim [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 360 (2008), no. 10, pp. 5089–5100] on volume entropy for graphs. As a byproduct we obtain a curvature-free version of the Collar Lemma in all dimensions.

In this paper, we extend the notion of microstate free entropy to the bi-free setting. In particular, using the bi-free analogue of random matrices, microstate bi-free entropy is defined. Properties essential to an entropy theory are developed, such as the behaviour of the entropy when transformations on the left variables or on the right variables are performed. In addition, the microstate bi-free entropy is demonstrated to be additive over bi-free collections provided additional regularity assumptions are included and is computed for all bi-free central limit distributions. Moreover, an orbital version of bi-free entropy is examined which provides a tighter upper bound for the subadditivity of microstate bi-free entropy and provides an alternate characterization of bi-freeness in certain settings., Comment: (new version contains corrections, orbital bi-free entropy, and a new characterization of bi-freenness)

The Kuramoto–Sinelshchikov–Cahn–Hilliard equation models the spinodal decomposition of phase separating systems in an external field, the spatiotemporal evolution of the morphology of steps on crystal surfaces and the growth of thermodynamically unstable crystal surfaces with strongly anisotropic surface tension. In this paper, we prove the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, associated with this equation.

In this paper we consider singularly perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equations with electromagnetic potentials and involving continuous nonlinearities with subcritical, critical or supercritical growth. By means of suitable variational techniques, truncation arguments and Lusternik–Schnirelman theory, we relate the number of nontrivial complex-valued solutions with the topology of the set where the electric potential attains its minimum value.

In the present paper, we are concerned with the semilinear viscoelastic wave equation in an inhomogeneous medium Ω subject to two localized dampings. The first one is of the type viscoelastic and is distributed around a neighborhood ω of the boundary according to the Geometric Control Condition. The second one is a frictional damping and we consider it hurting the geometric condition of control. We show that the energy of the wave equation goes uniformly and exponentially to zero for all initial data of finite energy taken in bounded sets of finite energy phase-space.

The aim of this paper is to study higher-order Caginalp phase-field systems based on the Maxwell–Cattaneo law, instead of the classical Fourier law. More precisely, one obtains well-posedness results, as well as the existence of finite-dimensional attractors.

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. The notion of n-wide subcategories of Mod R is introduced and studied in Matsui-Nam-Takahashi-Tri-Yen in relation to the cohomological dimension of a specialization-closed subset of Spec R. In this paper, we introduce the notions of n-coherent subsets of Spec R and n-uniform subcategories of D(Mod R), and explore their interactions with n-wide subcategories of Mod R. In this paper, we consider a class of nonlocal equations where the convolution kernel is given by a Bessel potential symbol of order $\alpha$ for $\alpha > 1$. Based on the properties of the convolution operator, we apply a global bifurcation technique to show the existence of a highest, even, $2\pi$-periodic traveling-wave solution. The paper is devoted to a comprehensive study of composite models in variational analysis and optimization the importance of which for numerous theoretical, algorithmic, and applied issues of operations research is difficult to overstate. The underlying theme of our study is a systematical replacement of conventional metric regularity and related requirements by much weaker metric subregulatity ones that lead us to significantly stronger and completely new results of first-order and second-order variational analysis and optimization. In this way, we develop extended calculus rules for first-order and second-order generalized differential constructions while paying the main attention in second-order variational theory to the new and rather large class of fully subamenable compositions. Applications to optimization include deriving enhanced no-gap second-order optimality conditions in constrained composite models, complete characterizations of the uniqueness of Lagrange multipliers, strong metric subregularity of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker systems in parametric optimization, and so on.

For the M/M/1+M model at the law-of-large-numbers scale, the long-run reneging count per unit time does not depend on the individual (i.e., per customer) reneging rate. This paradoxical statement has a simple proof. Less obvious is a large deviations analogue of this fact, stated as follows: the decay rate of the probability that the long-run reneging count per unit time is atypically large or atypically small does not depend on the individual reneging rate. In this paper, the sample path large deviations principle for the model is proved and the rate function is computed. Next, large time asymptotics for the reneging rate are studied for the case when the arrival rate exceeds the service rate. The key ingredient is a calculus of variations analysis of the variational problem associated with atypical reneging. A characterization of the aforementioned decay rate, given explicitly in terms of the arrival and service rate parameters of the model, is provided yielding a precise mathematical description of this paradoxical behavior.

In this paper, we propose a time-dependent viscous system and by using the vanishing viscosity method we show the existence of solutions for the Riemann problem to a particular 2 × 2 system of conservation laws with linear damping.

This paper studies how long it takes the orbit of the chaos game to reach a certain density inside the attractor of a strictly contracting iterated function system of which we only assume that its lower dimension is positive. We show that the rate of growth of this cover time is determined by the Minkowski dimension of the push-forward of the shift invariant measure with exponential decay of correlations driving the chaos game. Moreover, we bound the expected value of the cover time from above and below with multiplicative logarithmic correction terms. As an application, for Bedford-McMullen carpets we completely characterise the family of probability vectors which minimise the Minkowski dimension of Bernoulli measures. International audience; In this paper, we prove some new results on operational second order differential equations of elliptic type with general Robin boundary conditions in a non-commutative framework. The study is developed in Hölder spaces under some natural assumptions generalizing those in [4]. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the data to obtain a unique strict solution satisfying the maximal regularity property, see Theorems 1 and 2. This work completes the one given in [4] and [12].

Let f be a polynomial in n variables over some number field and Z a subscheme of affine n-space. The notion of motivic oscillation index of f at Z was initiated by Cluckers in [7] and Cluckers-Mustaţǎ-Nguyen in [12] . In this paper we elaborate on this notion and raise several questions. The first one is stability under base field extension; this question is linked to a deep understanding of the density of non-archimedean local fields over which Igusa's local zeta function of f has a pole with given real part. The second one is around Igusa's conjecture for exponential sums with bounds in terms of the motivic oscillation index. Thirdly, we wonder if the above questions only depend on the analytic isomorphism class of singularities. By using various techniques as the GAGA theorem, resolution of singularities and model theory, we can answer the third question up to a base field extension. Next, by using a transfer principle between non-archimedean local fields of characteristic zero and positive characteristic, we can link all three questions with a conjecture on weights of l-adic cohomology groups of Artin-Schreier sheaves associated to jet polynomials. This way, we can answer all questions positively if f is a polynomial ‘of Thom-Sebastiani type’ with non-rational singularities. As a consequence, we prove Igusa's conjecture for arbitrary polynomials in three variables and polynomials with singularities of A − D − E type. In an appendix, we answer affirmatively a recent question of Cluckers-Mustaţǎ-Nguyen in [12] on poles of maximal order of twisted Igusa's local zeta functions.

O'Grady constructed a 6-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic variety by taking a crepant resolution of some moduli space of stable sheaves on an abelian surface. In this paper, we naturally extend O'Grady's construction to fields of positive characteristic p greater than 2, called OG6 varieties. We show that a supersingular OG6 variety is unirational, its rational cohomology group is generated by algebraic classes, and its rational Chow motive is of Tate type. These results confirm in this case the generalized Artin--Shioda conjecture, the supersingular Tate conjecture and the supersingular Bloch conjecture proposed in our previous work, in analogy with the theory of supersingular K3 surfaces., Comment: Final version. The goal of this paper is to provide a categorical framework that leads to the definition of shtukas a la Drinfeld and of excursion operators a la V. Lafforgue. We take as the point of departure the Hecke action of Rep ( G ˇ ) on the category Shv ( Bun G ) of sheaves on Bun G , and also the endofunctor of the latter category, given by the action of the geometric Frobenius. The shtuka construction will be obtained by applying (various versions of) categorical trace.

In the present paper we develop an approach to obtain sharp spectral asymptotics for Steklov type problems on planar domains with corners. Our main focus is on the two-dimensional sloshing problem, which is a mixed Steklov-Neumann boundary value problem describing small vertical oscillations of an ideal fluid in a container or in a canal with a uniform cross-section. We prove a two-term asymptotic formula for sloshing eigenvalues. In particular, this confirms a conjecture posed by Fox and Kuttler in 1983. We also obtain similar eigenvalue asymptotics for other related mixed Steklov type problems, and discuss applications to the study of Steklov spectral asymptotics on polygons., 45 pages, 6 figures; some very minor corrections to match the published version

We study families of metrics on automorphic vector bundles associated to representations of the modular group. These metrics are defined using an Eisenstein series construction. We show that in certain cases, the residue of these Eisenstein metrics at their rightmost pole is a harmonic metric for the underlying representation of the modular group. The last section of the paper considers the case of a family of representations that are indecomposable but not irreducible. The analysis of the corresponding Eisenstein metrics, and the location of their rightmost pole, is an open question whose resolution depends on the asymptotics of matrix-valued Kloosterman sums., 24 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of the finitely generated subgroups of a family of branch groups, which includes the first Grigorchuk group and the Gupta-Sidki 3-group. This description is made via the notion of block subgroup. We then use this to show that all groups in the above family are subgroup separable (LERF). In this paper we investigate Ramanujan’s inequality concerning the prime counting function, asserting that π ( x 2 ) < e x log x π ( x e ) \pi \left( {{x^2}} \right) < {{ex} \over {\log x}}\pi \left( {{x \over e}} \right) for x sufficiently large. First, we study its sharpness by giving full asymptotic expansions of its left and right hand sides expressions. Then, we discuss the structure of Ramanujan’s inequality, by replacing the factor x log x {x \over {\log x}} on its right hand side by the factor x log x - h {x \over {\log x - h}} for a given h, and by replacing the numerical factor e by a given positive α. Finally, we introduce and study inequalities analogous to Ramanujan’s inequality.

Neretin in [Izv. Ross. Akad. Nauk Ser. Mat. 77 (2013), pp. 95–108] constructed an analogue of the Hua measures on the infinite p p -adic matrices M a t ( N , Q p ) \mathrm {Mat}\left (\mathbb {N},\mathbb {Q}_p\right ) . Bufetov and Qiu in [Compos. Math. 153 (2017), pp. 2482–2533] classified the ergodic measures on M a t ( N , Q p ) \mathrm {Mat}\left (\mathbb {N},\mathbb {Q}_p\right ) that are invariant under the natural action of G L ( ∞ , Z p ) × G L ( ∞ , Z p ) \mathrm {GL}(\infty ,\mathbb {Z}_p)\times \mathrm {GL}(\infty ,\mathbb {Z}_p) . In this paper we solve the problem of ergodic decomposition for the p p -adic Hua measures introduced by Neretin. We prove that the probability measure governing the ergodic decomposition has an explicit expression which identifies it with a Hall-Littlewood measure on partitions. Our arguments involve certain Markov chains.

We are concerned with the small ball behavior of the smallest singular value of random matrices. Often, establishing such results involves, in some capacity, a discretization of the unit sphere. This requires bounds on the norm of the matrix, and the latter bounds require strong assumptions on the distribution of the entries, such as bounded fourth moments (for a weak estimate), sub-gaussian tails (for a strong estimate), and structural assumptions such as mean zero and variance one. Recently, Rebrova and Tikhomirov developed a discretization procedure which does not rely on strong tail assumptions for the entries. However, their argument still required the structural assumptions of mean zero, variance one i.i.d. entries. In this paper, we discuss an efficient discretization of the unit sphere, which works with exponentially high probability, does not require any such structural assumptions, and, furthermore, does not require independence of the rows of the matrix. We show the existence of nets near the sphere, which compare values of any (deterministic) random matrix on the sphere and on the net via the regularized the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, which we introduce. Such refinement is a form of averaging, and enjoys strong large deviation properties. As a consequence we show sharp small ball estimates for the smallest singular value of square random matrices under mild assumptions, and for the random matrices with arbitrary aspect ratio., 38 pages. For $$(m,p,q)\in (1,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}\times {\mathbb {R}}$$ , this paper establishes a sharp Liouville principle for the weak solutions to the quasilinear elliptic inequality of second order $$\Delta _m u+u^p|\nabla u|^q\le 0$$ on the geodesically complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, which is new even for the Euclidean spaces.
