Search

New technology brings new methodological opportunities. While long limited to face-to-face interviewing, today’s interview researchers can choose from a plethora of options, including email, instant messaging, telephone, and video interviews. Consequently, the issue of interview modes and their relative strengths and weaknesses has received increased attention. In this article, we take stock of existing writings on interview modes in qualitative interview research. Drawing on key insights from more general theorizing about face-to-face and remote interaction, we identify and challenge five key assumptions in writings about interview modes: (1) that physical copresence ensures more and better data; (2) that interview modes have determinate effects on interaction; (3) that remote interviewing should seek to replicate face-to-face interviewing; (4) that interviews modes should be held constant within each study; and (5) that face-to-face interviewing is unmediated. We counter each assumption with a series of more productive methodological principles and advance instead a view we call interview mode pluralism , which offers a more nuanced and relational understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different interview modes. The article thus helps increase the methodological literacy of those conducting and evaluating qualitative interview research, enhancing the likelihood that researchers select those tools best suited for their tasks, and reducing the chance that evaluators dismiss research based on their methodological prejudice.

BackgroundEuropean health care systems regard information and communication technology as a necessity in supporting future health care provision by community home care services to home-dwelling older adults. Communication technology enabling synchronous communication between 2 or more human actors at a distance constitutes a significant component of this ambition, but few reviews have synthesized research relating to this particular type of technology. As evaluations of information and communication technology in health care services favor measurements of effectiveness over the experiences and dynamics of putting these technologies into use, the nuances involved in technology implementation processes are often omitted. ObjectiveThis review aims to systematically identify and synthesize qualitative findings on the uses and experiences of synchronous communication technology for home-dwelling older adults in a home care services context. MethodsThe review follows the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020 checklist for reporting. We conducted a cross-disciplinary search in 5 databases for papers published between 2011 and 2023 that yielded 4210 citations. A total of 13 studies were included after 4 screening phases and a subsequent appraisal of methodological quality guided by the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. From these, prespecified data were extracted and incorporated in a 3-stage thematic synthesis producing 4 analytical themes. ResultsThe first theme presented the multiple trajectories that older users’ technology acceptance could take, namely straightforward, gradual, partial, and resistance laden, notwithstanding outright rejection. It also emphasized both instrumental and emotional efforts by the older adults’ relatives in facilitating acceptance. Moving beyond acceptance, the second theme foregrounded the different types of work involved in attempts to integrate the technology by older users, their relatives, and health care providers. Theme 3 highlighted how the older users’ physical and cognitive conditions formed a contextual backdrop challenging this integration work, together with challenges related to spatial context. Finally, consequences derived from taking the technology into use could be of a both enabling and complicating nature as integration reconfigured the way users related to themselves and each other. ConclusionsThe acceptance and integration of synchronous communication technology for older adults involves multiple user groups in work tending to the technology, to the users themselves, and to each other through intergroup negotiations. This review’s original contribution consists of its attention to the dynamics across different user groups in deriving consequences from using the technology in question, in addition to its assertion that such consequences may be both intentional and unintentional. We argue that our findings may be used to provide nuance to policies addressing—and practices taking place in—contexts that involve similar user technology constellations to the ones explored in this paper. The subse quent objective is to discuss the model’s robustness regarding internationalization. The question raised is how the Nordic model, in relation to management, is configured in empirical studies undertaken in international corporations. Using systematic literature searches to examine peer- reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2022, 15 out of 972 studies were eligible for a full review. Primarily, one facet of the model was investigated: workplace democracy. Foreign-owned companies operating in Nordic countries partly adopted the model, whereas the model was implemented to some extent in Nordic-owned companies abroad. Management’s support and employee involvement were considered important. This review indicates that there is pressure on the model, although it has extended beyond the Nordic border and appears to be adaptable to global working life.

Artikkelens hensikt er å bidra til økt innsikt i faktorer som har betydning for at barnehagen skal fungere som læringsarena for studenter ved arbeidsplassbasert barnehagelærerutdanning (ABLU). ABLU-studenter arbeider i barnehage parallelt med studiene. Gjennom utdanningsløpet opplever de kontinuerlige grensekryssinger mellom å være student og assistent, samt en grensekryssing fra assistent til barnehagelærerrollen. Resultatene baseres på kvalitative data fra fokusgruppeintervju. Problemstillingen er: Hvordan kan barnehagen være en støttende læringsarena i ABLU-studenters grensekryssinger? Funnene viser til utfordringer studentene møter underveis i grensekryssingene, primært knyttet til å synliggjøre og bruke fagkunnskapen sin på egen arbeidsplass under utdanningsløpet. Støtte og forventningsavklaringer fremtrer som nødvendige faktorer for at barnehagen skal fungere optimalt som læringsarena når studentene utvikler profesjonsidentitet og krysser grenser mellom ulike praksisfellesskap i praksislandskapet. ENGLISH ABSTRACT “I feel like I’m somewhere in between.” Crossing boundaries in workplace-based early childhood teacher education This article aims to investigate factors regarding learning environment for students in Workplace-Based Early Childhood Teacher Education (ABLU). ABLU students are working in kindergarten simultaneously with their studies. Throughout the educational process, they continuously experience the shifts between being a student and a kindergarten assistant in the same community of practice, as well as the shift from being an assistant to being a kindergarten teacher. The results are based on qualitative data from focus group interviews. The topic in question is: How can the kindergarten as a learning environment be of support in ABLU students’ border crossing between different roles in kindergarten settings? The findings refer to challenges the students encounter during these changes of roles, primarily related to the opportunities to make their professional knowledge visible and applicable in their own workplace during their education. There appear to be two necessary factors for kindergarten to function optimally as a learning environment when the students develop a professional identity and cross boundaries between roles. These two factors are support and clarification of expectations.

Nervous systems are endowed with rapid chemosensation and intercellular signaling by ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs). While a complex, bilaterally symmetrical nervous system is a major innovation of bilaterian animals, the employment of specific LGICs during early bilaterian evolution is poorly understood. We therefore questioned bilaterian animals’ employment of acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs), LGICs that mediate fast excitatory responses to decreases in extracellular pH in vertebrate neurons. Our phylogenetic analysis identified an earlier emergence of ASICs from the overarching DEG/ENaC (degenerin/epithelial sodium channel) superfamily than previously thought and suggests that ASICs were a bilaterian innovation. Our broad examination of ASIC gene expression and biophysical function in each major bilaterian lineage of Xenacoelomorpha, Protostomia, and Deuterostomia suggests that the earliest bilaterian ASICs were probably expressed in the periphery, before being incorporated into the brain as it emerged independently in certain deuterostomes and xenacoelomorphs. The loss of certain peripheral cells from Ecdysozoa after they separated from other protostomes likely explains their loss of ASICs, and thus the absence of ASICs from model organisms Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans. Thus, our use of diverse bilaterians in the investigation of LGIC expression and function offers a unique hypothesis on the employment of LGICs in early bilaterian evolution.

Bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae and pv. morsprunorum, is one of the most important diseases of stone fruit trees (Prunus spp.). The pathogen infects buds, flowers, fruitlets, leaves and shoots, from which the disease spreads to the branches, boughs and trunks, causing necrosis and cankers. The efficacy of different chemical and biological products for the control of bacterial canker on stone fruit trees was tested in 2018–2021. The experiments were conducted in sour cherry, plum and sweet cherry orchards in central Poland. Foliar application of the tested preparations was performed three times a season. The biological efficacy of the tested products in the control of bacterial canker was evaluated on sour cherry on the basis of infected leaves and fruits and on plum and sweet cherry on the basis of infected leaves. The highest efficacy was observed for products containing various forms of copper—copper oxide, copper oxychloride and copper hydroxide—as well as fertilizers with copper gluconate and the fungicide Luna Care 71.6 WG (fluopyram and fosetyl-Al). However, the biological preparations were significantly less effective. The conducted studies showed that preparations based on copper gluconate can be a valuable alternative to typical copper fungicides.

This paper explores a translation process of Nordic workplace democracy by using an empirical case study of a Norwegian company setting up a subsidiary company in the US. The paper con- tributes to existing accounts of how ideas and practices in international companies are translated from one institutional context to another by focusing on the role of agency in translation processes. Drawing on advances in Scandinavian institutional theory, the findings show how employees from the source context acted as skilled translators in the new local context and helped to close the skills-gap between employees with and without experience of workplace democracy. In addition, the US managers had work experience from the company in Norway as well as from the US. The employees’ and managers’ complementary contextual knowledge represented important institutional bridging skills in the process of reproducing workplace democracy in the new local setting. However, during the translation process, some of the elements in the workplace democracy model were discussed and modified. This demonstrates how the organizations’ approach can change over time, from a reproducing to a modifying mode.

The electronic structure of 2(5H)-thiophenone in the gas phase was investigated by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the C 1s, O 1s, and S 2p edges. All assignments of the experimental results are supported by both ab-initio electron propagator outer-valence Green's function (OVGF) calculations for the valence photoemission bands and density functional theory (DFT) and relativistic time dependent DFT calculations for the core levels XPS and NEXAFS spectra. Overall good agreement between experiment and theory is observed; this is especially true for core electron excitations which has permitted an unambiguous assignment of the observed spectral features in terms of single-particle excitations to virtual molecular orbitals. The assignment of the valence band spectra based on OVGF calculations, although satisfactory, points to the importance of electron correlations effects that partially break the single particle picture of ionization. The growing global population has intensified concerns about food security, making it essential to produce crops sustainably to meet increasing demands without harming the environment. In this regard, biological control agents (BCAs) have recently gained more attention owing to their potential to manage fungal diseases of crops, particularly in the Solanaceae family. The proper use of selected BCAs such as Trichoderma spp., Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Beauveria bassiana, and Gliocladium spp. has several benefits for Solanaceae crops. This review aims to summarize the effectiveness of various biological control strategies for fungal diseases in Solanaceae crops. We also provide basic knowledge on BCAs along with suggestions for further research to reduce the severity of these destructive diseases.Article highlights: Solanaceae crops are susceptible to various fungal pathogens, leading to significant yield losses. BCAs such as Trichoderma spp., Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Beauveria bassiana, and Gliocladium spp. effectively manage fungal diseases in Solanaceae crops. Molecular mechanisms of BCAs involve activation of plant defense pathways and production of antifungal compounds. Integrating BCAs with other disease management strategies enhances their efficacy and reduces reliance on chemical fungicides. Rain cracking compromises quality and quantity of sweet cherries worldwide. Cracking susceptibility differs among genotypes. The objective was to (1) phenotype the progeny of a cross between a tolerant and a susceptible sweet cherry cultivar for cuticle mass per unit area, strain release on cuticle isolation, cuticular microcracking and calcium/dry mass ratio and (2) relate these characteristics to cracking susceptibilities evaluated in laboratory immersion assays and published multiyear field observations. Mass of the dewaxed cuticle per unit area and strain release upon cuticle isolation were significantly related to cracking susceptibility in lab or field. Cuticular microcracking in the stylar end region as indexed by infiltration with acridine orange was more severe in susceptible than in tolerant genotypes and significantly correlated with susceptibility to cracking in lab and field. The Ca/dry mass ratio was lower (-8%) for susceptible than for tolerant genotypes. Fruit that cracked early had less Ca than those that cracked later. Only the Ca/dry mass ratio of the stylar end region was significantly correlated with cracking susceptibility in the field. Based on stepwise regression analyses microcracking of the cuticle accounted for most of the cracking susceptibilities in field and lab (partial r2 = 0.331 to 0.338 for field vs. r2 = 0.326 to 0.453 for lab). The variability in cracking susceptibility accounted for increased to a r2 = 0.571 (lab) when adding mass of dewaxed cuticle, up to r2 = 0.421 (field) when adding the Ca/dry mass ratio in the stylar end region or up to r2 = 0.478 (field) when entering the strain release on isolation into the model. A protocol for phenotyping is suggested that allows larger progenies to be phenotyped for microcracking, DCM mass and strain release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pathogenicity of five isolates of Colletotrichum acutatum species complex (CASC) was tested on artificially injured apple fruits of the cultivar ‘Golden Delicious’ under laboratory conditions. Then, ten apple cultivars were tested for their relative susceptibility to CASC. Differences in the pathogenicity of the CASC isolates were confirmed in the test. The highest degree of pathogenicity was showed by the isolates from the strawberry and DCSBPM J1 from the apple. No cultivars were resistant to the pathogen. The disease incidence ranged from 57.5% to 100%. The individual cultivars showed different susceptibility to the tested isolates. The cultivars ‘Braeburn’, ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Rubinola’ showed the least susceptibility to the pathogen, while the cultivars ‘Jonagored’ and ‘Otava’ were recorded as the most susceptible to CASC. All the tested isolates were confirmed, by the conventional PCR method, to belong to CASC. The sequences of isolates DCSBPM J1 and DCSBPM 1209 were deposited in the GenBank. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sweet cherry is an important fruit crop with high economic and ornamental value in China. However, cherry fruit anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum species, greatly impacts cherry yield and quality. Here, we surveyed cherry anthracnose in Guizhou, China from 2019-2020. Necrotic sweet cherry fruits were collected from different areas in Guizhou and examined. A total of 116 Colletotrichum strains were isolated from these symptomatic fruits. Based on the morphological characteristics of the isolates and phylogenetic analyses of concatenate internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and ACT, CHS-1, GAPDH, TUB2, and HIS3 genes, the pathogen responsible for causing sweet cherry anthracnose was identified as Colletotrichum godetiae. Pathogenicity tests were conducted by inoculating healthy sweet cherry fruits with spore suspensions of the fungal pathogen, and Koch's postulates were confirmed by pathogen re-isolation and identification. The Q-1 isolate showed different sensitivities to 13 fungicides, exhibiting seven different modes of action, and its EC50 values ranged from 0.04 to 91.26μg ml-1. According to that, the sensitivity of 20 isolates from different samples to ten fungicides with better performance, were measured. The results showed that 6 of the 10 fungicides (difenoconazole, propiconazole, prochloraz-manganese, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin-tebuconazole, and difenoconazole-azoxystrobin) all showed higher sensitive to the 20\u00B0C. godetiae isolates, and no resistance groups appeared. Its EC50 values ranged from 0.013 to 1.563 μg ml-1. In summary, this is the first report demonstrating that C. godetiae causes sweet cherry anthracnose and the results of this study provide insights into how sweet cherry anthracnose could be effectively controlled in China. Pecans (Carya illinoinensis), one of the most valuable native North American nut crops, are commonly propagated through grafting to preserve the desired characteristics from parent trees. Since successful cultivation of pecan trees relies on the interplay among scion varieties, rootstocks, and soil conditions, this study investigated the microbial change to communities in the soils and roots of southern (87MX5-1.7) and northern (Peruque) rootstocks in a rootstock test orchard. Both grafted with the 'Pawnee' scion cultivar. Bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and fungal ITS were amplified from both roots and rhizosphere soils of the two 10-yeargrafted trees, then sequenced and annotated into trophic and nutrient-related groups to characterize the rhizosphere microbiota. The Peruque roots had a higher relative abundance of saprotroph fungi, while 87MX5-1.7 exhibited higher levels of symbiotroph fungi and nitrogen fixation-related bacteria. Among them, the presence of symbiotroph fungi, particularly ectomycorrhizal fungi, notably differed between these two rootstocks, with a significantly higher presence observed in the root of 87MX5-1.7 compared to Peruque. This variation likely leads to divergent pathways of nutrient translocation: Peruque was in favor of multiple fungi (Russula and Inocybe) to gain nutrition, while 87MX5-1.7 preferred a specific domain of fungi (Tuber) and nitrogen fixation-related bacteria (Bradyrhizobia) to form beneficial symbiosis. Moreover, the presence of pathogens suggested a potential risk of Fusarium patch and snow molds in 87MX5-1.7, while canker and black foot disease pose threats in Peruque. The findings of this study suggest that rootstocks from different origins shape rhizosphere microbes differently, potentially affecting nutrient uptake and nut yield. Exploring rootstock-microbe combinations could provide insights into optimizing scion growth and ultimately increasing nut yield. By understanding how different rootstock-microbe interactions influence pecan tree development, growers can strategically select combinations that promote beneficial symbiotic relationships, enhancing nutrient uptake, disease resistance, and overall tree vigor. The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to prepare and deliver risk assessments for commodities listed in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/2019 as 'High risk plants, plant products and other objects'. This Scientific Opinion covers plant health risks posed by plants of Betula pendula and B. pubescens imported from the United Kingdom (UK) taking into account the available scientific information, including the technical information provided by the UK. The commodities were grouped in the risk assessment as (a) bundles of 10–20 graftwood/budwood (up to 1‐year‐old), (b) bare root plants which include bundles of 25 or 50 seedlings or transplants (1–2 years‐old), bundles of 5, 10 or 15 whips (1–2 years‐old) and single bare root plants (1–7 years‐old), (c) plants in pots which include bundles of 5 and 10 cell‐grown plants (1–2 years‐old) and rooted plants in pots (1–7 years‐old), and (d) large specimen trees up to 15‐years‐old. All pests associated with the commodities were evaluated against specific criteria for their relevance for this opinion. Two EU quarantine pests i.e. Meloidogyne fallax and Phytophthora ramorum (non‐EU isolates) and two protected zone quarantine pests i.e. Entoleuca mammata and Thaumetopoea processionea fulfilled all relevant criteria and were selected for further evaluation. For the selected pests, the risk mitigation measures described in the technical dossier from the UK were evaluated considering the possible limiting factors. For these pests an expert judgement is given on the likelihood of pest freedom taking into consideration the risk mitigation measures acting on the pest, including uncertainties associated with the assessment. In the assessment of risk, the age of the plants was considered, as larger trees are more likely to be infested mainly due to longer time grown in the field. In addition, larger canopies and root systems are more difficult to inspect, thereby making the detection of pests more challenging on large trees. The likelihood of pest freedom varies among the pests evaluated, with M. fallax being the pest most frequently expected on the imported plants. Background: A randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the Modular Approach to Therapy for Youths with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, and Conduct Problems (MATCH) for Norwegian youths referred to seven Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Outpatient Clinics. MATCH addresses comorbid problems that are common in children and youth, and its transdiagnostic design may therefore be more effective compared to standard treatments that often address single problems. MATCH has, however, never been evaluated in a Nordic context, and the present study aimed to fill this gap. Methods: A sample of 121 Norwegian youths (Mage = 9.83, 58.7% boys) was randomly assigned to MATCH (n = 73) or treatment as usual (TAU, n = 48). Primary treatment outcomes were youths' externalizing and internalizing problems as reported by parents, using the Child Behavior Checklist, the Behavior and Feelings Survey. In addition, the study included assessments of parent-reported Top Problems. Results: Overall, youths showed significant improvements in both externalizing and internalizing problems from intake to post-test. Results did not provide evidence that MATCH reduces symptoms of these problems compared to TAU. Conclusions: The findings were inconclusive regarding whether MATCH was more effective than TAU in reducing youth internalizing and externalizing problems. 'Redson' is a new triploid, red-fleshed pomelo x grapefruit hybrid. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of rainfall, harvest time, tree age, and yield on the postharvest storage performance of 'Redson' fruit. During 2022/23, two postharvest storage trials were conducted with early- and late-harvested fruit. The fruit from the early harvest retained good quality for up to 16 weeks of storage at 7.5 °C plus 1 week at 22 °C, whereas the late-harvested fruit suffered from a high decay incidence. During 2023/24, we expanded the postharvest trials to nine different fruit sets harvested from early season (late October) until the end of the season (January). Fruit quality was examined under the same storage conditions after 6 and 16 weeks, and the results indicated that early- and mid-season fruit retained good quality with minimal decay incidence even after prolonged storage for 16 weeks, whereas the late-season fruit suffered from significant decay incidences of 17–22% and a decline in flavor acceptability. Further analysis revealed strong and significant correlations between various rainfall parameters and harvest time and decay incidences. Overall, early-harvested fruit during the autumn had a superior postharvest storage performance, whereas late-harvested fruit during the rainy winter suffered from decay development. Sour cherry is a non-climacteric fruit that quickly loses its quality after harvest, so effective storage and packaging are essential to minimize postharvest decay. Our study aimed to (i) evaluate fruit decay incidence during shelf-life for both freshly harvested and six-week-cold-stored sour cherry fruits, comparing normal atmospheric conditions with modified atmosphere packaging across three sour cherry cultivars ('Érdi bőtermő', 'Újfehértói fürtös', and 'Petri'); and (ii) assess postharvest fruit decay incidence across the following three production systems: conventional, integrated pest management (IPM), and reduced IPM, for the cultivar 'Érdi bőtermő'. The results showed that modified atmosphere packaging effectively preserved or slightly increased fruit firmness (ranging from 27.1 to 46%) compared to control fruits across all cultivars. Fruit weight loss (ranging from 1.18 to 26.1%) was also significantly reduced under modified atmosphere packaging compared to normal atmospheric storage. Over a 14-day period, the decay incidence of harvested fruits consistently increased, with major losses from day 6 onward (ranging from 17.7 to 77.0% at shelf-life day 14) across all cultivars and years. After six weeks of normal atmospheric cold storage, decay incidence remained low (ranging from 0 to 9.4%) and was comparable across all cultivars. Both normal atmospheric and modified atmosphere packaging storage maintained sour cherry quality during cold storage, but the shelf-life of the fruits was significantly shorter at room temperature, regardless of the storage methods. Fruit decay incidence at harvest was highest in the reduced IPM system (ranging from 3.2 to 6.4%), significantly exceeding those observed in the conventional and IPM systems. In post-MAP cold storage, decay incidence followed the following order: conventional < IPM < reduced IPM, with significant differences observed only between the conventional and reduced IPM systems. In conclusion, our results suggest that sour cherries produced under conventional or IPM systems and stored in modified atmosphere packaging offer an effective postharvest strategy for preserving fruit quality. Hox genes are transcriptional regulators that elicit cell positional identity along the anterior–posterior region of the body plan across different lineages of Metazoan. Comparison of Hox gene expression across distinct species reveals their evolutionary conservation; however, their gains and losses in different lineages can correlate with body plan modifications and morphological novelty. We compare the expression of 11 Hox genes found within Streblospio benedicti, a marine annelid that produces two types of offspring with distinct developmental and morphological features. For these two distinct larval types, we compare Hox gene expression through ontogeny using hybridization chain reaction (HCR) probes for in situ hybridization and RNA-seq data. We find that Hox gene expression patterning for both types is typically similar at equivalent developmental stages. However, some Hox genes have spatial or temporal differences between the larval types that are associated with morphological and life-history differences. This is the first comparison of developmental divergence in Hox gene expression within a single species and these changes reveal how body plan differences may arise in larval evolution.
