Background: The pandemic has put at risk the social and emotional development of children on account of the paucity of arenas for social interaction. This study from Kerala, India was conducted to assess the resilience factors, behavioural concerns, psychological distress symptoms among the children aged 3 to 5 years. We also tried to look into the lost opportunities that could have aided the social and emotional development of children like peer interaction, child care hours. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among the children aged 3 to 5 years. A total of 535 children attending the immunisation clinics were enrolled by consecutive sampling. Devereux Early Childhood Assessment P2 (DECA P2) questionnaire was used to assess the levels of resilient factors and behavioural concerns in the study population. Results: We observed a high proportion of children in the area of need category of protective factors under DECA P2. The proportion of children falling under area of concern was 64.5%, 49%, 68.4% for attachment/relationship, self-regulation, and initiative respectively. 24.9% study subjects have a behavioural concern score that puts them in the area of need category. The logistic regression model we created identified 'Male Gender,' 'Mothers could spend only less time for child care' and 'electronic devices used as pacifier' as significant predictors for belonging to Area of need Behavioural Concerns T score category. Conclusion: A large proportion of children aged between 3 to 5 years with reported behavioural concerns and lack of protective factors for socioemotional development. This can be attributed partly to the ongoing pandemic and its associated restrictions. The increased child care hours invested by parents or grandparents could have sized down the full impact that the pandemic would have had on the socio emotional development of the child. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme has been the central focus of the POSHAN Abhiyaan to combat maternal and child malnutrition under the national nutrition mission in India. This paper examined the linkages between utilization of ICDS and underweight among children aged 6–59 months. The study utilized data from two recent rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS‐4 [2015–2016] and NFHS‐5 [2019–2021]). Descriptive analyses were used to assess the change in utilization of ICDS and the prevalence of underweight at the national and state levels. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to examine factors associated with the utilization of ICDS and underweight. Linkages between utilization of ICDS and underweight were examined using the difference‐in‐differences (DID) approach. Utilization of ICDS increased from 58% in 2015–2016 to 71% in 2019–2021. The prevalence of underweight decreased from 37% to 32% in the same period. Changes in ICDS utilization and underweight prevalence varied considerably across states, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Results from decomposition of DID models suggest that improvements in ICDS explained 9%–12% of the observed reduction in underweight children between 2016 and 2021, suggesting that ICDS made a modest but meaningful contribution in addressing undernutrition among children aged 6–59 months in this period. Key messages: Utilization of ICDS services among children aged 6–59 months increased from 58% (2015–2016) to 71% (2019–2021) nationally. The programme's expansion was prominent in urban areas, showcasing progress across states.The prevalence of underweight among children in India declined by 5 percentage points from 2016 to 2021, but almost one‐third of children are still underweight.Increase in coverage and service delivery strengthening of ICDS explained 9%–12% of the observed reduction in underweight between 2016 and 2021.The findings suggest that optimizing quality of interventions under ICDS can have a modest but meaningful contribution in reducing childhood underweight in India. Statement of the Problem: It is essential to address caries risk at an early stage for the prevention of dental caries. Mobile application CaRisk is designed in a particular way to self-assess the dental caries risk by the individual’s themselves. Purpose: The current study aimed to assess the dental caries risk among age groups 5-6 and 35-44 using self-assessment caries risk mobile application CaRisk and compare it with the deft and DMFT values. Materials and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Chennai, India; to evaluate the risk of dental caries in children aged 5 to 6 and adults aged 35 to 44. The scores of the mobile application CaRisk and the decayed- extracted-filled teeth (deft)/ decayed-missing-filled-teeth (DMFT) caries risk assessment were evaluated. Descriptive statistics were performed. The risk category was determined by frequency. Chi-square analysis was done to determine whether the DMFT scores and the CaRisk mobile app were associated. The correlation was performed between the CaRisk mobile application and DMFT scores. Results: Association was found between the caries risk assessment score of the mobile application CaRisk and the DMFT and deft scores of the adults and children for both the age groups 5-6 and 35-44 years respectively and it indicates that it was found to be statistically significant. Pearson’s correlation was performed to assess the strength of association and R-values obtained for the age group 5-6 and 35-44 years respectively, which was statistically significant (0.892 and 0.840). Conclusion: This CaRisk mobile application scores correlate with the deft and DMFT scores and it is an effective self-diagnosis tool for assessing dental caries risk assessment. Background: Undernutrition is an important public health problem affecting one-third of under five-year-old children in India. Objectives: To assess the nutritional status of under five-year-old children along with child feeding practices. Materials and Methods: We adopted a systematic sampling procedure to carry out this community-based, cross-sectional study in all the districts of Haryana. Data was collected on socioeconomic and demographic particulars along with anthropometric measurements. Analysis was done using SPSS Windows 23. Results: The overall prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting was 34%, 27.5%, and 11%, while that of severe undernutrition was 11%, 8%, and 3%, respectively. The odds of underweight were significantly higher among children of the Muslim religion, children of scheduled caste, children of illiterate mothers, lower per capita income, HHs without electricity, landless HHs, low birth weight, no ANC care, and those early ages at complementary feeding. Stunting was significantly higher among children whose mothers were illiterate, children whose fathers were laborers, among landless HHs, with no separate kitchen and lower birth weight, while wasting was higher among children of Muslim religion, children of scheduled caste, with no sanitary latrine facility, low-birth-weight children and early initiation of complementary feeding. Conclusions: Undernutrition is observed to be associated with religion, community, education of mother, per capita income, land holding status, birth weight, and age at complementary feeding. Thus, improving maternal nutrition can improve birth weight, improving maternal knowledge about child feeding, and the household's socio-economic status may improve the nutritional status of children. Background: Identification of mental health disorders during childhood is crucial for healthy 'adult roles' in the society, so this study aimed to estimate the magnitude of 'any mental health disorder' and to find out its correlates among children attending the pediatric out-patient department (OPD) of a medical college in West Bengal and to estimate parental stress among their parents. Materials and Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study done in the pediatric OPD of Burdwan Medical College, West Bengal, during July--December, 2021. The calculated size of 288 children aged between 4 and 12 years and attending with either of their parents was selected through systematic random sampling. One of their parents (preferably mother) was interviewed using a schedule, containing a pre-validated pediatric symptom checklist and parental stress scale. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee. Data were analyzed using SPSS-v23. Results: The median age of the children was 7 years (5--8 y.). The majority of them were male (57.6%), lived in urban areas (59.0%), and lived in joint families (57.6%). One-fifth (20.5%) of the children were found to have any mental health disorder (AMHD). Living in an urban area (aOR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.1--5.7), belonging to a nuclear family (aOR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.7--8.1), and belonging to a family with social problems (aOR = 7.8, 95% CI: 2.3--27.2) were significant correlates of AMHD. Parental stress [median: 60 (55--63)] was found significantly higher (P < 0.001) among parents of children with AMHD as compared to the parents of others. Background: Immunization is a cost-effective weapon against vaccine preventable diseases. Children of migrant workers suffer from lack of immunization because of frequent shift of places, poor knowledge, and low socioeconomic status. To assess the immunization status of children 12--36 months of age of migrant workers and factors associated it. To identify the reasons for non-immunization or partial immunization among these children. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 migrant workers' children aged 12--36 months residing in Urban Bangalore east from February 2019 to August 2020. A cluster sampling method was incorporated. The data were collected using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Epi-info™ Version 7.2.1 and SPSS version-21. Data were summarized in percentages, mean, standard deviation, and logistic regression. Results: The mean age of the children was 25.2340 ± 8.42 months. Out of 500 children, 88.60% were fully immunized, 11.40% were partially immunized, and no child was unimmunized. Significant predictors of immunization status of children were education of father and immunization card. Common reasons for dropout were inconvenient time (80.70%), unaware of need (77.19%), and busy schedule of parents (75.44%). The dropout rate of BCG to MR-1, Penta-1 to Penta-3, and Penta1to MR-1 was 6.49%, 0.85%, and 2.12%, respectively. Conclusions: Immunization coverage in the present study was 88.60%. Background: India experienced three coronavirus disease (COVID-19) waves, with the third attributed to the highly contagious Omicron variant. Before the national vaccination rollout for children above 6, understanding severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunoglobulin G (IgG) positivity in the pediatric population was essential. This study aims to assess the burden of Covid-19 infection and to estimate the seroprevalence in children aged 6 to 14 years in the state of Karnataka. Material and Methods: We surveyed 5,358 children aged 6-14 across Karnataka using 232 health facilities, from June 6 to 14, 2022. We determined the sample size using the PPS (Population Proportional to Size) technique and employed cluster sampling. We tested all participants for SARS-CoV-2 IgG with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit and SARS-CoV-2 RNA with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We sequenced samples with a cycle threshold (CT) value below 25 using whole genomic sequencing (WGS). Result: We found an adjusted seroprevalence of IgG at 75.38% statewide, and we found 0.04% of children RT-PCR positive for COVID-19. We determined a case-to-infection ratio of 1:37 and identified the SARS-CoV-2 strains as Omicron, BA.5, and BA.2.10. Introduction: Dietary acid load (DAL), which reflects the balance between acid- and alkaline-forming foods, is a modifiable risk factor for metabolic acidosis in CKD. Owing to the paucity of data in the Indian context, we undertook this cross-sectional study to estimate DAL and assess acid and alkaline food consumption in children with CKD2-5D (Chronic kidney disease stage 2 to 5 and 5D-those on hemodialysis). Methods: Clinical profile, dietary assessment of energy, protein intake/deficits, and macronutrients were noted and computed using software created by the division of nutrition, St John's research institute based on Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guidelines in clinically stable children with CKD2-5D. DAL was estimated using potential renal acid load (PRAL in mEq/day) = (0.49 x protein intake in g/day) + (0.037 x phosphorus-intake in mg/day) - (0.02 x potassium intake in mg/day) - (0.013 x calcium intake in mg/day) - (0.027 x magnesium intake in mg/day). A positive dietary PRAL (>0) favors acidic content and negative (<0) favors alkaline content. PRAL was stratified into quartiles for analysis. The association of various clinical and dietary parameters were analysed across these quartiles. Results: Eighty-one children [of mean age 122 ± 47 months; 56 (69%) boys, 29 (36%) on dialysis, 62 (77%) non-vegetarians] were studied. Twenty-eight (34%) were on bicarbonate supplements. A positive PRAL (9.97 ± 7.7 mEq/day) was observed in 74/81 (91%) children with comparable proportions in those with CKD2-5 and 5D [47/52 (90%) vs. 27/29 (93%) respectively, P > 0.05]. Protein intake was significantly higher in the highest quartile compared to the lowest quartile of PRAL in CKD2-5 (55 ± 16 g/day vs. 40 ± 14 g/day, P < 0.001) and 5D groups (47 ± 15 g/day vs. 25 ± 11 g/day, P = 0.002). A majority of the participants 60/81 (74%) consumed highly acidic and minimal alkali foods. Conclusion: In children with CKD2-5D, PRAL estimation revealed high DAL in the majority with a high consumption of acidic foods. Introduction: Psychocutaneous disorders in children have been a gray zone in dermatology practice. It can be secondary to some primary dermatological disorder or can be a presentation of underlying primary psychiatric illness. There is a paucity of data regarding the occurrence of these disorders in the pediatric population. The present study was carried out to assess the proportion of primary psychiatric dermatoses in the pediatric population seeking dermatological care. Materials and Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional observational study done over 6 months. All consecutive children <14 years old presenting with primary psychiatric disorders (PPDs) to the dermatology outpatient department were recruited in the study. Results: PPDs were found in 0.41% of the pediatric patients attending the outpatient department. Dermatitis artefacta was the most common PPD in our study (47.05%). Other less frequently observed PPDs were trichotillomania, lip-licking dermatitis, and nail-biting. Underlying psychiatric illness was found in 41.17% of affected children. Conclusion: Primary psychiatric dermatoses in children could go undiagnosed because of its rarity but early diagnosis is essential as it can be an early sign or a harbinger of underlying severe psychiatric illness. Background and Aim: According to the World Health Organization, close to 21% of India's population may be affected by intestinal parasites, accounting for 39 million disability-adjusted life years, which may likely be due to substandard sanitation practices and insufficient personal hygiene standards. This research was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of helminthic infections among school-aged children in the South Canara district of India. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving school children from nursery to the 8th Grade in the South Canara district of Karnataka, India. The presence of various intestinal parasites in different age groups was determined by performing routine stool microscopy. Modified acid-fast staining was performed for stool samples collected from children <5 years of age for the detection of intestinal coccidian parasites. Statistical analysis was carried out to analyze age-related trends in relation to the prevalence of commonly detected intestinal parasites. Results: Intestinal parasites were identified in 10 of the 253 students (3.9%), with the highest incidence observed in the age group of 7-10 years (1.9%). The most prevalent parasite identified was the cysts of Giardia lamblia, with a prevalence of 7.54%, followed by Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm, each having a prevalence of 5.66%. Of the 253 students, 92.2% practiced handwashing with soap after defecation, while 7.8% did not use soap. The handwashing practices did not significantly vary across different age groups. Clinically, pallor was observed in 64.2% of the individuals. Conclusion: Giardiasis was the most common parasitic infection, followed by soil-transmitted helminths such as Ascariasis and hookworm. Background and Aim: Kidney dysfunction is reported in significant number of beta thalassemia major children. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of glomerular dysfunction in beta-thalassemia major children on regular blood transfusion (BT) and chelation therapy, and to find the correlation between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimated by Schwartz formula and Technetium 99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) renogram with ferritin level and cumulative transfusion load. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study conducted was done on 110 children diagnosed with beta-thalassemia major receiving regular BT and chelation therapy. Clinical examination, biochemical investigations (serum creatinine, ferritin) and DTPA renal scan were done. Estimated GFR calculation was done by Schwartz method and 99mTc-DTPA scan. The normal values of GFR were taken from the standard value as per KDIGO guidelines. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of glomerular dysfunction by Schwartz formula and DTPA renogram was 44% and 24%, respectively. The GFR calculation (Schwartz formula and DTPA renogram) were weakly positively correlated (r = 0.126, P = 0.547). There was significant association between GFR Schwartz and duration of iron chelation, as children with abnormal GFR had significantly more duration of iron chelation >5 years (28% vs. 4%, P = 0.003). GFR (Schwartz formula and DTPA renogram) showed no association with cumulative transfusion load and disease duration (P > 0.05). GFR Schwartz formula and GFR-DTPA showed no correlation with serum ferritin with r = 0.179, (P = 0.392) and r = 0.278 (P = 0.178). Conclusion: There is a significant derangement in the renal function of children of beta-thalassemia major on chronic BT and iron chelation therapy. Background: To determine the prevalence of anisometropia and its association with stereopsis and amblyopia in Goan school children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on students between 9 and 14 years of age from two randomly selected schools in Goa. All students underwent an assessment of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, stereo acuity, and complete ophthalmic examination. Children with refractive errors without any other coexisting ocular pathologies were included. Refractive correction of children with a best-corrected visual acuity of logMAR 0.0 was measured using a manual lensometer. Subjects with visual acuity greater than logMAR 0.2, further improving with pinhole, were subjected to objective and subjective refraction. The prevalence of anisometropia, anisometropic amblyopia, and degree of stereo acuity in anisometropic children was assessed. Results: Four hundred and six children were screened for refractive errors. Sixty-four children were found to have refractive errors, of which 58 students (90.6%) were myopic, and six (9.4%) were hyperopic. The prevalence of anisometropia of ≥1.0 D spherical equivalent was found in 12 students (18.75%), among whom myopia was the most common refractive error (9.75%). Anisometropic amblyopia was noted in eight students (66.6%), five of whom were myopes and three hyperopes. All three hyperopic anisometropes (100%) had amblyopia. Seventy-five percent of children with poor stereo acuity, ranging from ≥160 seconds of arc, belonged to the hyperopic anisometropia group. Conclusion: Amblyopia is more prevalent among anisometropes than isometropes, with hyperopic anisometropes having poor stereoacuity and being more likely to develop amblyopia. Background: About two billion people in the world’s population are affected by the soiltransmitted helminth infection, with children being the most affected with Soil Transmitted Helminth infection.[1] India alone contributes nearly 25% to the total global cases, with 220.6 million children in need of preventive chemotherapy. [2] In view of the above context, the present study was conducted with the aim and objective of to the prevalence of soiltransmitted helminth (STH) infection and its risk factors. Material and Methods: Study Design: A Cross-sectional Observational Study Study Setting: Department of Microbiology, AIIMS, Raipur, from January 1 to June 30, 2023 (6 months). Sample Size: 384 (n=Z2 1-ά/2 P(1-P)/d2). P=50%, CI=95%, d=5% Absolute Precision. Results: STH prevalence was 13.3%, more in males (68.8%), and significantly high (62.5%). P < 0.05) in school-going children between 6 and 12 years of age. The predominant STH was Ancylostoma duodenale (56.2%); STH infection was much less (12.5%) in those practising handwashing with soap. Fifty percent of children had an STH infection even after receiving deworming within the past six months. More egg counts—216 eggs per gramme of faeces—were found in 29 cases by the KK method. Entamoeba histolytica (56.5%) was predominant among non-STH infections. Conclusion: Contrary to the assumption of 50% prevalence, the actual prevalence was very low, only about 13.3%. School-going children aged 6–12 years were more affected, and handwashing with soap was the key factor in preventing STH infection. Background: Stunting is a significant public health problem in childhood in developing countries. Sustainable Developmental Goals have mandated that each country reduce stunting by 50% by 2030. However, despite various nutrition and health programs, India still faces a massive burden of stunting. With the increasing urbanization in the country and its typical challenges related to health and nutrition, chronic malnutrition is a massive problem in urban areas, especially among people in the lower wealth quintile. Hence, current study has attempted to estimate the prevalence of stunting among children (0–6 years) and its determinants. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Urban Anganwadi centers of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, for 6 months, from December 2021 to May 2022. Three hundred ten children from 13 selected Anganwadi centers were included using random sampling. Data were collected using a semi-structured validated and pretested questionnaire using Epicollect 5.0. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 version to estimate the prevalence of stunting and associated risk factors. Results: Out of 310 participants, 71 (22.9%) were stunted. Female children were slightly more stunted (24.7%) than males (21.1%). Maximum stunting (33.4%) was observed among children in the 5–6-year age group, and children with higher birth order were much more stunted. Stunting was reported more in children who were breastfed on demand (33.8%) than those fed every 2 hours (19.3%). Conclusion: Stunting prevalence in urban areas of Rishikesh is 22.9%, which is almost similar to the state average of 24.3% for urban areas; however, it was higher in comparison to the SDG 2030 global target of ending malnutrition of all forms. Backgrounds: The Universal Immunization Program of India is one of the most cost-effective interventions in public health. Missing or delaying vaccination may elicit an uncertain immune response in the body, making the population susceptible to vaccine-preventable diseases. The objectives of this study were to determine the coverage of newborn immunization for birth doses under the National Immunization Schedule and its epidemiological determinants in the rural areas of the Dehradun district, Uttarakhand. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted for a period of one year with a sample size of 570. World Health Organization (WHO) 30 Cluster sampling technique was used with 19 children in each cluster. The data on determinants were collected using a semi-structured, pre-designed schedule through a house-to-house survey. Multivariate analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with immunization coverage, taking the significance level as P < 0.05. Results: The coverage of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine, oral polio vaccine zero dose and hepatitis B birth dose were 100%, 91.9%, and 58.8%, respectively in the study area with an overall prevalence of incomplete coverage of newborn immunization as 42.5%. The most cited reason for children being unimmunized with birth doses was the unavailability of vaccines at the birthplace center (29.6%). Conclusions: The prevalence of incomplete coverage of newborn immunization was quite high, which was undermining the holistic approach of the National Immunization Program. Background The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the use of online schooling in order to comply with national and local lockdown guidelines. Online learning required students and teachers to adapt to a new method of schooling. The inability of adolescents to adapt to their environment can interfere with their psychosocial condition and become a risk factor for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). Objective To determine the prevalence of FGID in adolescents and evaluate possible risk factors that existed during online learning. Methods This cross-sectional study was done in children aged 12-18 years who participated in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The diagnosis of FGID was based on Rome IV criteria. Psychosocial problems were assessed using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist Questionnaire-17 (PSC-17) which includes internalization, externalization, and attention subscales. Subjects with a PSC-17 mixed subscale total score of >15 were considered as having an increased likelihood of having a behavioral health disorder. Data were collected by online questionnaires via Google Forms. Results Of 1,413 participants, 23% experienced FGID; of these, 32.6% had >2 FGID diagnostic criteria. Upon multivariate analysis, internalization psychosocial problems were the most common risk factors for FGID, followed by mixed subscale psychosocial problems, unstable internet connection, and not understanding of the material. Conclusion The prevalence of FGID in adolescents in this study is 23%. Background: Visual perception (VP) plays a vital role across various occupations, such as daily activities, academic performance, and social interaction. Many children are referred to occupational therapy with VP dysfunction, often accompanied by diagnoses such as developmental delay, learning difficulties, or neurological impairments. In India, health-care professionals, particularly occupational therapists, increasingly utilize the motor-free VP test-4 (MVPT-4), a test originally standardized among Western populations, to identify VP difficulties in children. However, studies suggest that using assessments standardized in different cultures may lead to inaccurate evaluations of visual perceptual skills, potentially underestimating or overestimating of these abilities. This underscores the importance of investigating the cultural influence on the visual perceptual abilities of Chennai children by comparing the performance of Chennai children with norms of MVPT-4. Objectives: The main purpose of this study was (a) To compare the performance of children from Chennai with norms of MVPT-4 and (b) To identify the influence of gender on MVPT-4. Study Design: This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional research design. Methods: A total of 150 children, aged 6.0-10.11 years, were selected from the community in Chennai using a convenience sampling approach. Children with good visual foundation skills were administered with MVPT-4. Results: Independent t-test revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the performance of children from Chennai and the norms of MVPT-4 in the age groups of 6.0-10.11 years. Notably, the results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between genders on MVPT-4 among Chennai children. Background: Lower gut bleeding is an alarming sign among caregivers. Determining the etiology is of utmost importance for further management. This is the first study conducted in northernmost India. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College, Srinagar. This study aimed to describe the etiology of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in the age group of 1-18 years over the past 5 years from June 2017 to June 2022. Results: A total of 310 children presented with hematochezia (53.5%), blood mixed with loose stools for > 2 weeks (39.3%), melena (1.9%), and occult blood in stools (0.3%). The mean age was 5.12 years. The age group of 1-6 years was 73.5 %. The most common findings were rectosigmoid polyps n = 104 (33.5%), anal fissure n = 47 (15.1%), lymphoid nodular hyperplasia (LNH) n = 38 (12.2%), trichuris dysentery syndrome n = 30(9.7%), cow's milk protein allergy n = 27(8.7%), non-specific colitis n = 18(5.8%), solitary rectal ulcer syndrome n = 14(4.5%), inflammatory bowel disease n = 6 (1.9%),intestinal tuberculosis n = 3(0.9%), duodenal dieulafoy lesion 1(0.3%), and blue bleb nevus rubber syndrome n = 1(0.3%). 21 patients had a normal colonoscopy. The colonoscopy yield was 93.3 %. Among the colonoscopy-negative patients, 6(1.6%) had Meckel's diverticulum, and 1(0.3%) had a duodenal dieulafoy lesion. Conclusion: Lower GI bleeding most commonly presents as hematochezia, and the most common cause is a rectosigmoid polyp. Colonoscopy is the procedure of choice to evaluate the etiology of lower GI bleeding. Background: As the COVID-19 epidemic began in 2019 in Wuhan, China, and spread quickly to numerous nations. Therefore, in order to curb the spread of this disease, the government has implemented various preventative measures, such as social distance, using napkins when sneezing or coughing, avoid hand contact with those who are ill, etc. Children attending large gatherings since schools have resumed operations as per government directives, making them susceptible to the transmission of Covid-19. In order to stop the spread of the pandemic among children, it is important to evaluate how school-aged children understand the respiratory exercises and preventative measures recommended by the Government of India. Methodology: The knowledge and attitudes of school-going youngsters were evaluated using a cross-sectional survey research. A thorough assessment of the literature led to the formulation of the survey's google form questionnaire, which included 17 questions in the knowledge and attitude domains. Snowball sampling was used to distribute the survey questionnaire to 800 students in North Indian schools. Only 673 students were included in the survey due to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Among 673 students, 404 students were females (22.965±2.899) and rest were males (22.186±3.772). Our study shows that both the domains' knowledge (t-stat 3.024) and attitude (t-stat 3.420) are highly significant as the p-value is <0.001. The correlation between both domains shows that both domains are positively and highly significantly correlated as the r-value is 0.44. Conclusion: The precautionary steps that the Indian government implemented have had a positive influence on students' lives and knowledge, and they are taking excellent care of themselves. Introduction: The assessment of growth is essential during preschool age, more particularly in pediatric neurological examination, where measurement of the head circumference plays a vital role. Head circumference (HC) is a simple and non-invasive anthropometric measure. Also known as the frontal occipital circumference, HC has been cautiously used to assess the frequencies of undernutrition among preschool children. Material & Methods: The current study was done on 782 preschool children (boys= 384, girls = 398) aged 24-60 months ICDS beneficiaries of Jalpaiguri by using WHO (2007) recommended cut-off points for head circumference for age. Statistical analyses were also done to determine age and sex variations in Head Circumference. Results: Age combined rates of Head Circumference based moderate undernutrition for boys was 21.87 % and for girls was 25.37 %. Age-combined severe undernutrition among boys and girls were 5.72% and 6.53 %, respectively. The higher percentage of malnourished girls was seen in the previous study done on Midnapore and Bangalkot and a higher percentage of malnourished boys was seen than the Midnapore children. The present study reveals Girls were more affected by moderate and severe undernutrition compared to boys. Conclusion: Head Circumference is an indicator of brain development so initiative should be taken for regular monitoring of ICDS beneficiaries to improve the nutritional condition of preschool children. Background: Vitiligo, a depigmenting disorder results due to destruction of melanocytes in the affected skin. It may have psychosocial impact on children and their parents. Childhood vitiligo may differ from that in adults. Aim: To study the clinicoepidemiological profile and associated diseases in children with vitiligo. Methods: One hundred consecutive children (=18 years) of both sexes, with vitiligo presenting between January and December 2018, were included. Detailed history, examination, and laboratory parameters were documented. Data were analyzed using simple statistical measures, chi-square, independent t tests, and Fisher exact test, wherever applicable. Results: Boys:girls ratio was 1:1.5. The mean age of onset was 9.17 ± 4.6 years [segmental vitiligo (SV: 6.6 ± 3.7 years) versus nonsegmental vitiligo (NSV: 9.7 ± 4.7 years); P= 0.014]. Vitiligo vulgaris (VV; 55, 55%) was the most common, followed by focal (16, 16%), segmental (16, 16%), and others. Most common site involved at onset (36, 36%) and presentation (n=57) was lower limbs, but differed among various types. Leukotrichia was commonly seen in SV (n=11, 68.8%) as compared to NSV [(n=29, 34.5%); P=0.01]. Family history (11, 11%) was seen only in NSV. Vitiligo disease activity score +4 was the most common (69, 69%). Koebner phenomenon was more common in NSV (n=22, 26.2%) as compared to SV (n=1, 6.3%) and varied among different types (P=0.01). Nail changes were present in 72 children (72%); longitudinal ridging was the most common (n= 40, 55.6%). Thyroid function tests were abnormal in nine (11.7%) and 29 (36.3%) had anemia. Two had halo nevus. Conclusion: Various types of vitiligo in children seem to differ in their clinicoepidemiological characteristics, knowledge of which helps in better evaluation and management. Introduction: As it was expected that the upcoming wave of COVID-19, where children and young age group was thought to get affected the most, there was a need for finding the serological prevalence of COVID-19 infection among children. Hence, the present study had been conducted with the aim to assess the sero-prevalence of COVID-19 infection among children aged 1 year to <18 years in the families with and without a history of COVID-19 cases reported to health functionary in pre-identified rural and urban areas of Gwalior district. Methodology: The present study was a community-based, cross-sectional survey conducted for the period of 1 month i.e. August-September 2021 in Urban and Rural areas of Gwalior district. The study unit was children from 1 year to <18 years of age. Total sample of 400 children were included using purposive sampling procedure. Data collection was done using a questionnaire and blood samples of the participant were taken. Statistical analysis was done using the IBM SPSS Statistics V22.0 Chicago. P value was judged at 5% level of significance. Results: Among selected sample population Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction testing was done in 222 families to any of the family members, out of which 116 (52.3%) belongs to rural area 106 (47.7%) belongs to urban area. Gender wise, seropositivity among male participants was 77.3% and 74.4% among female participants. The overall detected seropositivity in urban area (79%) was higher as compared to rural area (73%). Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity rate among children was high. There is urgent need for vaccination among the children to prevent development of complications, if develop infection. Introduction: Testis is essential for male sexual hormone production, fertility, and psychological well-being of a male. In the unfortunate event of testicular loss, placement of a testicular prosthesis perhaps will offer a sense of well-being, improved body image, and overall confidence in the growing child. Aims: The aim is to evaluate the feasibility and assessment of outcomes following concurrent placement of testicular prosthesis in children following orchiectomy. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted by reviewing the reports of patients who underwent simultaneous insertion testicular prosthesis following orchiectomy for various indications between January 2014 and December 2020 at tertiary hospitals in Bengaluru. Children <18 years were included in this study. A transscrotal approach was preferred in cases where a transscrotal orchiectomy was done. Transinguinal approach was preferred in children undergoing prosthesis insertion as an isolated procedure. The size of the prosthesis was chosen based on the age of the child and the size of the scrotum. Outcomes were assessed on follow-up. Results: A total of 29 children underwent prosthesis insertion (25 unilateral and four bilateral). The mean standard deviation age was 5.58 (3.92) years. The indications for prosthesis insertion were cryptorchidism with atrophic testis (22), torsion (3), Leydig cell tumor (2), and severely virilized Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) (2). Of these, three children (9%) had complications (wound gaping in two and wound infection in one) that needed removal of the implant. The mean duration of follow-up was 49.23 months. All the parents reported a good outcome, and none of the children who underwent prosthesis placement needed a change during this follow-up. The studies conducted a decade ago showed that the Ponseti method, suffers from many execution-related issues-particularly in low and middle-income countries including poverty, physical distance, lack of transportation etc. The society has undergone many changes, including improvements in literacy, connectivity (both transport and digital), etc., in the last decade. Therefore, this study is designed to identify the contemporary apprehensions, concerns, and challenges of parents seeking CTEV treatment for their child through the Ponseti Method in India. A descriptive cross-sectional study of 200 parents of the children undergoing treatment at a multi-specialty hospital is carried out using an interview guide. The semi-structured interviews were conducted telephonically and recorded. The statistical analysis shows that a male child is presented late than a female child. The physical distance is associated with child discomfort during the casting and bracing phase, with the travel method affecting the follow-up. The increase in travel time may result in increased casts due to a lack of regular follow-up. Parents' income level is also strongly associated with regularity of follow-up and child discomfort during treatment. The patients traveling long distances in public transport are the most vulnerable group regardless of gender. The children in such cases are more likely to experience discomfort during the casting and bracing phase with a lack of regular follow-up. Introduction: Anaemia is one of the micronutrient deficiency disorders that have global public health implications. The present study aims to determine the association of minimum dietary diversity (MDD) with anaemia among children aged 6–59 months in rural North India. Methods: In Rohtak (a north Indian city), a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2018–19 (n = 266). Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed. The Chi-square test was used for assessing the significance level during bivariate analysis. Further, multivariable regression analysis was used for determining the factors for anaemia prevalence among children aged 6–59 months. Results: About 62.4% (n = 166) of the children aged 6–59 months were found to have anaemia in the study area. The prevalence of MDD was 35.3% (n = 94). It was found that children with no MDD have a higher prevalence of moderate (42% vs. 25.5%; P < 0.001) and severe (12.8% vs. 8.5%; P < 0.001) anaemia. It was revealed that the children with no MDD had a significantly higher likelihood of being anaemic than children with MDD in model-1 [aOR: 2.09; CI: 1.23, 3.55] and model-3 [aOR: 1.70; CI: 1.01, 3.01]. Children with mothers who never attended school had significantly higher odds for anaemia in reference to those children whose mothers ever attended school in model-2 [aOR: 3.62; CI: 2.07,6.34] and model-3 [aOR: 3.00; CI: 1.62,5.56]. Conclusion: Measures to alleviate under-five anaemia should include empowering and educating women, expanding access to supplementation, fortification programmes, and promoting and raising awareness about feeding diverse foods, while also considering the socioeconomic status. Aim: This study aims to assess the prevalence of dental fluorosis and its association with dental caries, oral health behaviors, oral-health-related quality of life and parents' perceptions among preschool children in the 3–5-year-old preschool children living in the Belagavi district of Karnataka, a non-endemic fluorosis region. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among 1200 individuals of the preschool population from 48 government-sponsored child-care development centers in Belagavi, Karnataka, over a three-month period. They were examined following the Dean's fluorosis index (1942) and dmft (decayed, missed, and filled) scores of the participants were also recorded. Parents' perception of oral health was assessed using the self-administered Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). SPSS software (version 20) was used for statistical analysis. Chi-square test computed categorical data. One-way ANOVA test was used for multiple group comparisons. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 1200 children examined, 10 (0.83%) children exhibited dental fluorosis. Of the 10 children having fluorosis, six had fluorosis present on two or more of their primary teeth, and four had fluorosis on four or more teeth. The mean dmft score was 3.01 ± 1.38 to 3.60 ± 1.72 in 3–5-year-old children, respectively, with statistical significance difference (p < 0.001). The mean score of oral health-related quality of life was 10.74 ± 2.06, which was significantly correlated to the child's age and parents' education level (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study shows a negligible amount of prevalence of dental fluorosis in the non-endemic fluorosis residential district. It also elucidates that children from lower and lower-middle socioeconomic status are more prone to suffer from dental fluorosis as compared to other groups. The mean score of ECOHIS increased proportionally with the caries experience, indicating a significant relationship between the dmft and ECOHIS score. Deciduous dentition fluorosis is often neglected, especially in areas that are not considered endemic for fluorosis and with only optimum fluoride levels in their groundwater, which supports the disease's nature as multi-factorial and shows that a broader perspective is of prime importance to assess, diagnose, and prevent dental fluorosis among the preschoolers, thereby appraising their overall health and hygiene status. Objectives: To study the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy (PN) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and its association with clinical neuropathy and glycemic control by using nerve conduction studies (NCS). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care center from January 2018 to May 2019. Type 1 DM with at least a five-year duration was included. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory details were collected and analyzed. Results: A total of 95 (40 boys) children with a mean age of 11.8 ± 3.4 years were included. Neuropathy was clinically noted in 9 out of 95 (9.4%) patients and by NCS in 46 out of 95 (48.4%) patients. The PN has a significant association with the duration of illness (P-0.05) and HbA1c (P < 0.001). The sensitivity and specificity of detecting neuropathy by HbA1c was 63.0% and 63.3%, respectively. For every unit increase in HbA1c, the odds ratio for nerve conduction increases by 55.2%. Conclusion: The prevalence of neuropathy is high in children with type 1 DM. Background: Ensuring high immunisation coverage and its acceptance among the beneficiaries are crucial for a healthy society. Hence, this study aimed to estimate vaccine coverage and barriers of immunisation among children of age 12–23 months in urban areas of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. Aims: To estimate the immunization coverage rate among children of age 12-23 months in urban area of Rishikesh. Objectives: To identify the barriers towards immunization in children of age 12-23 months in urban area of Rishikesh. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was done in urban areas of Rishikesh for 1 year, including 210 children, using the WHO's 30 × 7 cluster sampling technique to collect data on immunisation status. Results: About 92% of the children were fully immunised. Bacillus Calmette–Guérin has the highest coverage rate (99.5%), whereas the coverage was the lowest for the measles vaccine (93.8%). Full immunisation coverage was found to be statistically significant with the education of the respondent, socio-economic status (SES) of the family and birth order of the child. Additional vaccines uptake showed a significant association between SES of the family and the place of vaccination. Conclusion: There were significant variations in childhood immunisation coverage across socio-economic and demographic factors. Background Despite its mostly viral etiology, antibiotics are frequently used to treat acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in children. India is one of the largest global consumers of antibiotics and has one of the highest rates of resistance to antimicrobial treatments. However, the epidemiology of antibiotic treatment among young children in India is poorly understood. Methods Using nationally representative household survey data from the Indian National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) conducted between 2015 and 2016 and 2019 and 2021, we estimated the prevalence of antibiotic use among 17472 children under the age of three who reported ARI symptoms within two weeks before their mothers were interviewed. To assess the factors associated with antibiotic use for the treatment of ARI symptoms, we used multivariable logistic regression models that included sociodemographic, child-related, household, and health care related characteristics, with results reported on the prevalence difference (PD) scale. Results We estimated that 18.7% (95% CI=17.8-19.6) of under-three-year-old (U3) children who exhibited ARI symptoms in the two weeks prior to the survey were given antibiotics as a treatment. The highest prevalence was observed in the southern and northern geographic zones of India. Furthermore, multivariable regression models indicated that children with greater access to health services were more likely to receive antibiotics for ARI treatment, regardless of the type of health care facility (public, private or pharmacy/unregulated). Additionally, the prevalence of antibiotic consumption was higher among children from families with religious affiliations other than Muslim and Hindu backgrounds (i.e. Christian, Sikh, Buddhist/neo-Buddhist, Jain, Jewish, Parsi/, no religion and other) (PD=11.7 (95% CI=6.3-16.7)) compared to Hindu families and among mothers with a secondary or higher education (PD=5.8 (95% CI=1.7-9.9)) compared to mothers lacking formal education. Conclusions Our findings provide an important baseline for monitoring the use of antibiotics for the treatment of acute respiratory infections, and for designing interventions to mitigate potential misuse among young children in India. Background: Acceptance of vaccines has been on a decline in recent times, with vaccine hesitancy being listed as one of the top 10 global health threats. This study analysed vaccine hesitancy and belief towards vaccination among caregivers of children aged below 5 years. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 196 caregivers of children aged 6 months to below 5 years who had attended an immunization clinic at a tertiary care institute of Eastern India from March to May 2019 were surveyed. Consecutive sampling was used to recruit eligible study participants. The survey assessed the attitudes of parents towards childhood vaccination by using the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale and their beliefs towards vaccination. Univariate analysis was performed to assess the association of various sociodemographic factors with vaccine hesitancy. Results: Among the caregivers, most (48%) mothers were aged 26–35 years, literate and homemakers. Vaccine hesitancy was observed in 9.18% of the participants. Only the age of the child was significantly associated with vaccine hesitancy. Nearly half (48.5%) of the participants were concerned about the serious adverse effects of vaccines, and a third (30.6%) agreed that newer vaccines are associated with higher risks than the older ones. Caregivers felt that vaccines are no longer required for uncommon diseases. Conclusion: Concerns regarding vaccine hesitancy are prevalent even among caregivers attending a tertiary care institute. Thus, additional studies are required to assess hesitancy in urban, rural, remote and inaccessible areas. Background: Handwriting is one of the important skills, i.e., a child needs to meet the needs of the elementary school classroom. Handwriting difficulties affect children's school performance. The prevalence of handwriting difficulties among the school children was 34%. Handwriting, a complicated perceptual-motor skill, requires a variety of talents, including visual-motor coordination, motor planning, cognitive and perceptual skills, as well as tactile and kinesthetic sensitivity. A child spends 30%-60% of their school day performing fine motor activities, mainly handwriting activities. Occupational therapy services are often recommended for children with handwriting problems. Handwriting interventions commonly focus on learning, acquisition, and maintaining a new skill. Thus, this study interprets the handwriting difficulties among school-going children. Objective: The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of handwriting difficulty among second grade school students in North Chennai. Study Design: The study design was a cross-sectional study. Methods: The students were selected based on the selection criteria. Multistage sampling method was used. The North Chennai wards were chosen first, and then, the areas within them, using the table of random numbers. The lottery method was used to choose a total of 9 schools and a total of 821 students were included. Prior to the child's participation in the study, the parent's consent was obtained. Then, the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency and student assessment were administered to all the participants. The collected data were analyzed and results were inferred. Results: Handwriting difficulty was prevalent among 240 students which accounted to be 29.2% of second grade students, while 581 students with 70.8% were found to have without handwriting difficulty. Out of 459 male students, 172 students (37.5%) and a total of 363 female students, 68 students (18.8%) have handwriting difficulty. Comparatively, male students were found to have more difficulty than female students. This difference of observation was identified statistically significant which denotes gender contributing factor with respect to handwriting difficulty. Conclusion: This study concludes that handwriting difficulties were more prevalent in boys than in girls. Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic-caused burden among the pediatric age group was less in terms of severity and mortality; indirect impacts of the pandemic on the mental health of children are huge and largely unnoticed. The main objective of this exploratory study was to analyze the association between screen time exposures among preschool children aged 3-6 years during the lockdown period in Tamil Nadu, India. Materials and Methods: An exploratory and anonymous population-based e-survey through social networks, including social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp) and researchers' acquaintances (email), using a snowball sampling strategy was conducted among parents of preschool children (aged 3-6 years) residing in different states of Tamil Nadu. Data were collected using Google Forms, and statistical, analysis was conducted. Results: Among 427 study participants, the mean age of screen introduction was 19.88 ± 11.73 months, and the mean age of independent operation of screen devices was 3.29 ± 1.16 years. Demanding extra attention (25.53%), temper tantrums (21.31%), increased aggressiveness (19.90%), more fussy (18.74%), altered night sleep (18.5%), and clinging (18.27%) were the frequently reported behavioral changes apart from increased screen time (60.88%) and decreased physical activity (28.80%) during the lockdown period. Conclusion: Excessive screen time beyond the recommended 1 h/day was seen in 94.1% of children, and screen exposure was inversely correlated with the duration of outdoor play. Aim: The aim of this article is to describe the hippocampal characteristics among children with calcified neurocysticercosis (cNCC). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among children with epilepsy aged 3-14 years diagnosed with cNCC. Patients showing evidence of cNCC, with prior serial imaging evidence of active NCC, were enrolled. Eligible participants were subjected to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based protocol and sleep-deprived electroencephalography. Hippocampal characteristics on the MRI were described. Results: A total of 31 children with mean (SD) age of 10.3 (3.2) years with cNCC were enrolled in the study. We observed that 42% (13/31) of children with cNCC had borderline (10-20% difference in the volumes of right and left hippocampi) (n = 8) or clear (>20% difference) (n = 5) hippocampal atrophy. Among 31 children with cNCC, 27 (87.1%) had nidus within the lesion and 21 (67.7%) had perilesional gliosis. Conclusion: Children with cNCC are at risk of seizure recurrence on tapering anti-seizure medications. Our study with limited sample size revealed that hippocampal atrophy and perilesional gliosis are prevalent among children with cNCC, predisposing them to the risk of epilepsy. Introduction: Normative reference scores have not been established for most equilibrium coordination tests. Hence, the aim of the present study was to confirm the feasibility of the methodology and procedures, and limitations, for of large-scale studies establishing normative reference scores for sideways walking, tandem walking, cross-stepping, heel walking and toe walking among children. Material and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 284 children (144 boys and 140 girls) aged 8-15 years were recruited from a senior secondary school to perform five equilibrium coordination tests. The children were asked to perform all tests in a random order, and the time taken in seconds (s) was recorded. The mean values were subjected to statistical analysis. The normality of the data was assessed with the Kolmogorov Smirnov test. The descriptive statistics are presented as geometric mean (GM) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The age, weight, height, and body mass index of the recruited children were 11.1 ± 2.1 years, 37.9 ± 9. kg, 141.3 ± 10.7 cm, and 18.7 ± 3.1 kg/m² respectively. The normative data of the trial for sideways walking, tandem walking, cross stepping, heel walking, and toe walking were 23.7 ± 8.8 s, 37.7 ± 6.7 s, 33.9 ± 11.3 s, 18.6 ± 8.8 s, and 14.5 ± 11.2 s, respectively. Conclusions: The findings indicate that it is feasible to conduct a large-scale study with a larger sample population to allow the data to be generalized to the global population. Background: Pityriasis alba (PA) is a common, benign skin disorder occurring predominantly in children and adolescents. It is characterized by the presence of multiple, ill-defined, hypopigmented patches with fine scaling particularly over the face. Aims and objectives: To study the clinical characteristics and epidemiologic parameters in the context of current scenario in a rural tertiary care hospital in central India. Materials and methods: We conducted a descriptive observational study over a period of 1 year. We studied 100 clinically diagnosed patients with PA of the age group 2 to 15 years during this study. Results: Most common age group of patients observed was 6 to 10 years. About 87% patients had Fitzpatrick skin type IV followed by type III (7%) and type V (6%). Male to female ratio was 1.17:1. Maximum patients belonged to class III (50%) followed by class IV (37%) and class V (10%) according to the modified Kuppuswamy socioeconomic status scale (2018). Maximum patients had age of onset ranging from 6 to 10 years. Clinical characteristics revealed that maximum patients had 0 to 5 patches, with a duration of 1 to 2 months most commonly over cheeks. Associated features such as itching, scaling, and erythema were present in 18%, 98%, and 1% of the patients, respectively. Pallor was observed in 28% patients. However, significant history of atopy was elucidated in only 21% of patients. Around6%patients showed positive family history of having PA and 14% having a positive history of atopy in first-degree family members. Conclusion: Due to the easily visible hypopigmented patches most commonly over face, PA is a common cause of concern in pediatric age group. In recent times, possibility of multiple factors other than atopy should be kept in mind while thinking of the associating or implicating factors which will lead to proper management of this pigmentary disorder. Background: Iodine deficiency is a major public health problem, which leads to impaired neurodevelopment, particularly in early life and is the single most preventable cause of mental retardation and brain damage in children and fortunately, it is preventable. Aims: To estimate the prevalence of goitre among school children in Kodagu District and to estimate the urine iodine excretion and salt iodine content in a subsample. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among school children of 6-12 years in the Kodagu district. Sampling was done by population proportionate to size cluster sampling method with 2700 study participants, 540 salt samples and 270 urine samples. Results: Out of 2700 study participants, the prevalence of goitre was 15.50%. Students of Madikeri Taluk, rural area students, 11-year-old students, Consumption of Goitrogens among students show significant association with goitre after multivariate logistic regression analysis. Urinary iodine excretion test shows 0.36%, 1.80% and 12.99% of the participants had severe, moderate and mild iodine deficiency, respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of goitre was high indicating that it is an endemic area. Activities such as periodic surveys, provision of iodised salt and intensified monitoring and further evaluation of the IDD programme is obligatory to reduce the goitre rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a lack of national-level estimates on the magnitude of asthma among children in India. Hence, we undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of asthma among children in India. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, and included cross-sectional studies reporting data on the prevalence of asthma among children in India. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of asthma. In the 33 selected studies (pooled sample of 167,626 children), the estimated prevalence of asthma was 7.9% (95% confidence interval: 6.3–9.6%), I2 = 99.1% (P < 0.001). The prevalence was higher among boys and in urban areas. Appropriate training and resources should be made available at the primary healthcare level for early detection and management of asthma in children. Context: The American Academy of Pediatrics had recommended that children younger than 2 years should avoid digital media. However, in the Indian context, it was less explored. Aims: The study aimed to determine the relationship between touch screen device (TSD) usage and sleep of infants, toddlers. Methodology: Using a cross-sectional design, 76 parents of infants and toddlers attending well-baby clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India were approached, and 57 parents who fulfilled the eligibility criteria were selected using a nonprobability convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using a pretested validated tool including TSD usage pattern, the brief infant sleep questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean age of TSD usage was 15.6 ± 5.8 months with a mean duration of 65 ± 9.6 min/day. Mothers (51%) reported circumstances to offer TSD was feeding the child. There was a significant negative relationship between night sleep and TSD usage among children (r = −0.35, P < 0.01). Conclusions: TSD usage time significantly affects the nighttime duration of sleep of infants and toddlers. Parents to be educated on proper usage and ill effects of TSD to prevent sleep issues. Introduction: Obesity is on the increasing trend among children, which leads to many co-morbidities. Obesity which was once a health problem of developed countries has now swept developing countries like India. As the home environment has a powerful influence on the health of a child it is very essential to intervene early in childhood and adolescence to prevent obesity/overweight. Aim: To assess the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) among mothers regarding obesity in children. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from October 2019 to March 2020. The sample size included 220 mothers with children aged between 6 to 14 years, who have attended the Paediatric outpatient department, Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. After obtaining ethical clearance from the Institutional ethics committee, a predesigned questionnaire was used to collect the socio-demographic variables which included mother's education and occupation, residence, family income, and the total number of family members, and for assessing KAP among mothers. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 22.0). Results: The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity was 52 (23.63%), with overweight representing 23 (10.45%) and obesity 29 (13.18%). There was a statistical significance difference when comparing mother's knowledge of children with overweight/obesity versus normal weight regarding physical inactivity (p=0.01) and eating unhealthy foods (p=0.01), an attitude that a child being obese was not a problem (p=0.03), the practice of mothers who allowed seeing television while eating (p=0.001), not restricting media usage (p=0.01), not allowing children to play outdoors every day (p=0.001), and allowed children to eat junk foods (p=0.001). Conclusion: Overweight and obesity were significant in children whose mothers were unaware of the risk factors like eating unhealthy foods and physical inactivity. Introduction: Adolescence as a life stage is associated with physical and psychological changes with an interplay of biological, social, and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of aggression among children and the factors associated with aggression. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study conducted in schools of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, between 2017 and 2019 among higher and higher secondary class children. All children from high and higher secondary classes were included, resulting in a sample of 192. Information on sociodemographic, family, psychosocial, lifestyle, addiction factors, aggression (Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire), self-esteem (Rosenberg self-esteem scale), and resilience (Nicholson McBride Resilience Questionnaire) were obtained. Results: The prevalence of aggression among children from Classes 9th to 12th was 49.5%; physical aggression was 42.7%, verbal aggression was 31.8%, anger was 44.3%, and hostility was 44.8%. Almost half (44.3%) of the children had self-esteem and only 1.6% of children had an established level of resilience. Of the sociodemographic factors considered, type of school, gender, parents' education; of the family factors considered, family members taking alcohol/drugs, parents having frequent arguments, parents hitting children and using abusive language; of the psychosocial, lifestyle and addiction factors considered, feeling neglected, grade, watching TV and practice of reading books were significantly associated with the presence of aggression in children (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Overall findings suggest the need for strengthening life skills education, positive immediate environment, coping at the individual level, social intelligence, and cautious approach toward boosting self-esteem. Background: The prevalence of stress in schoolaged children is reported to be an astonishing 88%. The literature supports an association between functional vision and stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate visual function skills and their association with stress in school-aged children in Mumbai. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted on students aged 9 to 15 years in Mumbai. Subjects with no history of ocular disease, surgery, trauma, systemic disease, or ocular or systemic drug use that might induce stress were included. Prediagnosed cases of depression, anxiety, and any systemic or ocular syndrome were excluded from the study. All subjects underwent detailed ocular examination that included slit lamp evaluation, subjective and objective refraction, and undilated retinal evaluation. Subjects were then assessed for colour vision, stereoscopic acuity, contrast sensitivity, and confrontation visual fields, followed by the Stress in Children (SiC) questionnaire. Results: One hundred subjects (mean age 12.3 ± 2.1 years) completed the study; 59% were females. Global mean score (GMS) showed a similar level of stress in females (1.95 GMS) and males (1.94 GMS). Increased stress was correlated with an increase (improvement) in the contrast sensitivity (r = 0.007) and stereo acuity (r = 0.096). GMS scores between astigmatism (2.11 ± 0.37), myopia (1.96 ± 0.24), emmetropia (1.94 ± 0.32), and hyperopia (1.81 ± 0.19) showed no statistical significance (p = 0.549) but were clinically significant. There was no difference found in colour vision and visual field throughout the sample population. Conclusions: Increase in stress was found to be correlated with an improvement in contrast sensitivity and stereo acuity. However, there were no changes found in colour vision and visual fields. Diarrheal disease is a significant public health problem leading to mortality and morbidity among children aged 0–59 months in rural India. Therefore, the rationale of this study was to identify the sociodemographic and environmental predictors associated with diarrhea among under-five children in rural India. A total of 188,521 living children (0–59 months) were studied from the National Family Health Survey-4, (NFHS-4) 2015–2016. Bivariate and binary logistic regression models were carried out from the available NFHS-4 data for selected sociodemographic and environmental predictors to identify the relationship of occurrence of diarrhea using STATA 13.1. In rural India, children aged 12–23 months, 24–35 months, 36–47 months, and 48–59 months were significantly improbable to suffer diarrheal disease. Children of the female sex, as well as children of scheduled tribes (ST) and other backward classes (OBC), were less likely to experience diarrhea. The disease was more likely to occur among children of scheduled castes (SC); Muslim or other religions; children belonging to central, eastern, and western regions; children with low birth weight; as well as children with improper stool disposal and rudimentary roof materials. In the rural parts of India, sociodemographic and household environmental factors were most influential. Effective community education; improved handwashing practices; pure water supply; and proper waste disposal, including building and utilizing latrines, would help reduce the burden of diarrheal disease in children. Context: Childhood injuries are a less explored area of public health. In the presence of public health problems such as communicable and noncommunicable diseases, childhood injury has gained less attention from the health system. Aims: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of various types of unintentional injuries (UI) amongst children and to assess the factors associated with same. Settings and Design: The study was conducted at Ahmedabad District of Gujarat State, and this is a cross-sectional sStudy. Subjects and Methods: The current study was a part of a multicentric national level research supported by Indian Council of Medical Research. Total 11 sites were selected across India, which all followed a uniform methodology. One of the selected sites was Dholka taluka of Ahmedabad district, Gujarat. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2341 households. The study participants were children aged from 6 months up to 18 years. A total of 3018 children and their caretakers were interviewed using software-based questionnaire. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was performed by frequencies and Percentage, Chi-square Test, Z-Test. Results: The overall prevalence of injuries was 7.62%. Gender and area of residence were significantly associated with UI. Fall-related injuries had the highest prevalence (3.38%), followed by road traffic injuries (RTI) (1.62%). The prevalence of burn-related injuries and poisoning was higher among females compared to males. No mortality was observed due to UI. Conclusions: Majority of the injuries were of minor or trivial type. Fall-related injury and RTI were the most common types of UIs among children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Multi-transfused thalassemic children are at higher risk of acquiring transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs). There are limited data available on TTIs among thalassemic children, especially on its impact on their quality of life (QoL). AIM: The aim of this study is to find out the proportion of multi-transfused β-thalassemia major (β-TM) children suffering from TTIs, its risk factors and impact on QoL. METHODS: This was a hospital-based, analytical observational study, cross-sectional in design, conducted among 328 β-TM children and their caregivers attending thalassemia day care unit of a medical college during May 2015–April 2016, with a structured schedule. Data were analyzed with appropriate statistical methods using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. RESULTS: Two-fifth (39.9%) of them were found to have TTIs with hepatitis C being the most common (34.5%), followed by hepatitis B (4.5%) and human immunodeficiency virus (1.8%). In the multivariable model, place of residence (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] – 2.23 [1.19–4.17]), per capita monthly family income (AOR – 1.84 [1.10–3.07]), and blood transfusion frequency (AOR – 1.19 [1.10–1.29]) were significant predictors of TTIs adjusted with their age, age at diagnosis, last pretransfusional hemoglobin level, size of spleen, and caregivers knowledge regarding the disease. The study participants with TTIs had a lower QoL compared to others as there were significant differences in between the total QoL scores ([49.9 ± 15.6 vs. 57.4 ± 15.5], P ≤ 0.001) and its various domains. Introduction: Renal dysfunction and progression to end stage renal disease is well known in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We studied the role of microalbuminuria and urinary NGAL levels in children with HIV infection for the prediction of renal dysfunction. Design and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out and 60 HIV infected children, aged (18 months to 15 years) were screened for microalbuminuria by nephelometry and for uNGAL by ELISA. Thirty healthy children were screened for uNGAL for normative data in Indian children. Results: The prevalence of microalbuminuria in studied population was 3.3%. The mean uNGAL and uNGAL/creatinine in study population was higher than controls (26.94 ± 93.12 ng/ml vs. 88.94 ± 345.20 mcg/g, and 15.53 ± 37.52 ng/ml vs. 30.12 ± 78.66 ng/ml; P = 0.003, P = 0.002). Children with lower CD4 counts had significant higher mean Albumin Creatinine Ratio (ACR) and mean uNGAL; P = 0.03, P = 0.01. Background: Malnutrition among under-five children is a foremost public health problem across India. United Nation estimates that 6.3 million under the age of five die in India, of which 45% die due to malnutrition. The objective of the study was to find out the prevalence and factors associated with malnutrition in terms of underweight, stunting, and wasting in children under five years of age in peri-tribal areas. Methods: Cross sectional study was conducted at the Anganwadi centres in 6 villages under the Rural Health Training Centre. Out of nine Anganwadi centres, five were selected using systematic random sampling method. Total of 370 children aged below five years were selected. Results: Among the 370 children aged 0-5 years, 29.1% children were normally nourished, 70.79% children were malnourished and had one or more form of malnutrition. Only stunting was present in 19.5% children and only wasting was present in 8.9% children. Both underweight and stunting were seen in 5.94% children. Both stunting and wasting were present in 22.16% children and wasting and underweight were present in 10.5% children. respectively, 1% Children were suffering from underweight, stunting and wasting. All three indices (Underweight, Stunting & Wasting) of under nutrition were found to be higher in low-birth-weight children. Conclusion: Mother's educational qualification is strongly associated with nutritional status of children. This might be due to better health care practices in terms of proper exclusive breast feeding, in-time complementary feeding and quality and quantity of complementary feeding among literate mothers as compared to illiterate mothers. Context: Availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has helped to decrease morbidity and increase the longevity of children living with Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (CLHIV/CLHA). These children require the special involvement of family members for adherence to care and support programs. Long-term caregiving stress can result in physical, social, emotional, and medical consequences for both the caregiver and the CLHIV. This study explores the burden and needs for support among CLHIV caregivers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at an ART Centre of Tertiary level Health Care Institute among 126 caregivers of CLHIV pretested and piloted semi-structured questionnaire and Zarit Burden Interview Scale (ZBIS) were employed to assess study objectives. Descriptive statistics and caregiver burden scoring were calculated. ZBIS score of 22 and above were considered additional burden for caregivers. Results: Mean age of caregivers was 34 ± 7.15 years. Among 126 CLHIV caregivers, 116 were female, while 110 had positive HIV serostatus. Ninety-seven percent disclosed their and the child's status to one or more family members. Mean caregiver ZBIS was 25 ± 7.08 with 71.5% caregivers having mild-to-severe levels of burden. Around 85% of caregivers knew correctly about four routes of HIV transmission although 8.7% had misconception regarding HIV transmission. Conclusions: ZBIS assessment shows emotional, financial, and future of child-related burden among CLHIV caregivers. There were gaps in the knowledge about HIV transmission, care and support needs of the CLHIV. The acquisition of HIV from parents in CLHIV suggests the need of strengthening the prevention of parent-to-child transmission program in Indian settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and Anemia are important public health nutritional problems in India. Objective: To assess nutritional status and prevalence and correlates of undernutrition, anemia, and VAD among children. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out adopting systematic random sampling. Information on socio-demographic particulars was collected and 20 µL blood was collected for hemoglobin and free-flowing drop on Whatman filter paper for Vitamin A estimation. Hemoglobin was estimated using indirect cyanmethemoglobin and Vitamin A by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Nutritional status was assessed using the WHO Child Growth Standard. Results: The overall prevalence of anemia and VAD was 68% and 59%, respectively, while underweight, stunting, and wasting was 30%, 55%, and 11%, respectively, among under 5 year children. Stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed no significant association of anemia and VAD with any sociodemographic variables, while the odd of stunting was four times higher among children of mothers engaged in labor and two times among children from low-income group, while underweight was two times higher among children from households not having sanitary latrine. Exclusive breastfeeding was observed to be associated with undernutrition among infants. Conclusions: Anemia, VAD, and stunting were high among children. Low intakes of green leafy vegetables and milk and milk product may be the reasons for the higher prevalence of anemia and VAD. Background: Food policies and environment (availability, accessibility, affordability, marketing) in and around educational institutes can influence food choices and behaviours of children and adolescents.Methods: Cross-sectional, mixed-methods study was implemented in schools (n = 9; Private = 6, Public = 3) and colleges (n = 4) from Delhi and National Capital Region (India). The data was collected from students of schools (n = 253) and colleges (n = 57), parents of school students (n = 190), teachers (n = 12, schools = 9, colleges = 3) and canteen operators of Private schools and colleges (n = 10; schools = 6, and colleges = 4). The primary and secondary data was collected to: 1) identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing guidelines and directives (desk review); 2) examine food environment, existing policies and its implementation (structured observations, in-depth interviews, surveys, focus group discussions), and; 3) assess food choices, behaviours of students (focus group discussions). The thematic analysis was used for qualitative data and descriptive analysis for quantitative data.Results: The available food and beverage options, in and around the participating educational institutes were either high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS), despite government and educational institute guidelines on restricting the availability and accessibility of HFSS foods. The healthy food and beverage options were expensive compared to HFSS foods both inside and outside educational institutes. In total, 37 vendors (Private = 27; Public:10) were observed outside schools at dispersal and twelve at lunchtime. Around colleges, vendors (n = 14) were seen throughout the day. Students from all Private schools (n = 6) and colleges (n = 2) were exposed to food and beverage advertisements either HFSS (Private schools = 1-3 and colleges = 0-2 advertisements), whereas no advertisements were observed around Public schools.Conclusion: It is imperative to implement food policies to improve the food environment in and around educational institutes to ensure the availability of healthy foods to establish and sustain healthy eating behaviours among students. Thus, the study findings emphasise stringent implementation, regular monitoring and surveillance of recently introduced Food Safety and Standards (Safe food and balanced diets for children in school) Regulation 2020, ensuring its compliance through effective enforcement strategies.
