This conceptual article and special issue introduction argues for the importance of studying three policy paradigms surrounding welfare policy opposition. The first is welfare populism, the opposition to welfare policies that do not benefit the 'common people'. The second is welfare chauvinism, the opposition to welfare policies for non-natives within a nation-state. The third is welfare Euroscepticism, the opposition to welfare policies at the European Union level. These paradigms have distinct causes and consequences that should be studied in more detail across different political actors. And while welfare policy opposition may not lead to a complete farewell to welfare, they have been shaping and will continue to shape welfare state recalibration. This article offers summaries of the special issue contributions with empirical snapshots of welfare policy opposition and concludes with avenues for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2014, the European undergraduate curriculum in Geriatric Medicine was published to cover the minimum requirements that a medical student should achieve by the end of medical school. In 2019, the European postgraduate curriculum in Geriatric Medicine outlined the minimum recommended training requirements to become a geriatrician at specialist level in the EU. The postgraduate dimension of Geriatric Medicine education is a highly relevant topic for all, since most physicians—independently of their specialty—are inevitably involved in the care of older patients, but for most physicians, geriatrics is not part of their postgraduate generalist or specialty training. A key area for postgraduate education remains the provision of Geriatric Medicine competencies to all specialties outside geriatrics. There is also need for wider educational initiatives to improve the gerontological education of patients and the public. Bernard Isaacs famously coined the expression 'geriatric giants' or the four clinical I's: Intellectual impairment, Incontinence, Immobility, and Instability. However, non-clinical giants exist. In education, we face challenges of Investment, Inspiration, Integration, and Interprofessionality; and in research, we need to attract Interest and Income, and generate Innovation and Impact. Without strengthening the links between all giants, we will not be able to achieve the ambition of age-attuned societies. A key goal for gerontological education is to enhance everyone's understanding of the wide diversity underlying the 'older people' demographic label, which will ultimately promote services and societies that are more responsive and inclusive to the needs of all older adults, irrespective of their health status. Background: Nurse researchers are well poised to study the connection of the microbiome to health and disease. Evaluating published microbiome results can assist with study design and hypothesis generation. Objectives: This article aims to present and define important analysis considerations in microbiome study planning and to identify genera shared across studies despite methodological differences. This methods article will highlight a workflow that the nurse scientist can use to combine and evaluate taxonomy tables for microbiome study or research proposal planning. Methods : We compiled taxonomy tables from 13 published gut microbiome studies that had used Ion Torrent sequencing technology. We searched for studies that had amplified multiple hypervariable (V) regions of the 16S rRNA gene when sequencing the bacteria from healthy gut samples. Results : We obtained 15 taxonomy tables from the 13 studies, comprised of samples from four continents and eight V regions. Methodology among studies was highly variable, including differences in V regions amplified, geographic location, and population demographics. Nevertheless, of the 354 total genera identified from the 15 data sets, 25 were shared in all V regions and the four continents. When relative abundance differences across the V regions were compared, Dorea and Roseburia were statistically different. Taxonomy tables from Asian subjects had increased average abundances of Prevotella and lowered abundances of Bacteroides compared with the European, North American, and South American study subjects. Discussion : Evaluating taxonomy tables from previously published literature is essential for study planning. The genera found from different V regions and continents highlight geography and V region as important variables to consider in microbiome study design. The 25 shared genera across the various studies may represent genera commonly found in healthy gut microbiomes. Understanding the factors that may affect the results from a variety of microbiome studies will allow nurse scientists to plan research proposals in an informed manner. Introducing the special issue, this paper provides a state-of-the-art on established and new trends in the study of international retirement migration (IRM) and summarises the five papers that follow. Early studies on IRM were mainly within Europe and drew on the conceptual framework of lifestyle migration, with some reference to the transnational and mobilities paradigms. New frontiers in IRM are presented under three heads. Firstly, new geographical frontiers extend IRM to new destinations within and proximate to Europe, and to new locations in the global South such as Thailand and Ecuador. Secondly, new typological frontiers involve a broadening of the class and wealth backgrounds of the retirees, including the 'return of retirement' of labour migrants to their countries of origin, and attentiveness to IRM's gendered aspects. Thirdly, new conceptual and theoretical frontiers of IRM involve a more in-depth investigation of its transnational aspects, exploration of the various regimes of mobility and, most importantly, a political economy perspective which stresses global inequalities and histories of colonialism in shaping access to privileged lifestyles. In the final part of the paper, the original features of each paper in the special issue are highlighted, demonstrating how they are collectively integrated and contribute to the advancement of IRM research.
