One way of exposing predatory journals is to submit a spoof article to see if it gets accepted. We investigate one journal, looking at how it has performed since a spoof paper it accepted came to light. We find that it has published almost 20% more papers following the acceptance of the spoof paper. The journal has a new web site, which appears to show that it did not publish its first paper until 2018. However, there is an old web site that lists 321 papers dating back to 2012. The editors said that this is due to a new workflow system, which meant that previously published papers could not be listed on the new web site. Moreover, the number of papers could be not accommodated, as a high configuration server would be required to provide a responsive web site. We found some plagiarism, which looks quite serious. We conclude that the spoof paper had little effect on the journal, which continues to operate, seven years after the spoof paper was accepted.

Scientific research cooperation and co-authored papers are becoming increasingly popular in the era of big science. However, allocating appropriate credit to each co-author of papers remains a challenge. We consider author contribution declarations according to the contributor roles taxonomy (CRediT) scheme (assigning each co-author to 14 contributor roles) and propose a new method of author contribution to allocate co-authors’ credits reasonably by converting the 14 contributor roles in an article into a binary author-role matrix. Based on the data of PLOS ONE, we further explore the new method’s advantages by comparing with other representative methods: It normalizes the total credits of different articles to 1, avoiding the inflationary bias caused by the increasing number of co-authors; awards different credits per co-author based on the participation rate of contributor roles to avoid the equalization bias; reduces the impact of the increasing number of co-authors on the credit of the first co-author.

Journal ratings are a key factor when individuals or institutions assess research and select journals. Despite their significant development in recent years, ratings are still not sufficiently precise or updated enough, depending on the subject and method used. In this paper, we present a new methodology, called paper affiliation index, with which to create subject journal ratings using expert judgment and research impact, both of which are based on secondary, objective measures, thus making it possible to produce lists every year without human manipulation at virtually no cost. We compare the results of our methodology with the selection of top journals by the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in the Social Sciences, the Excellence in Research for Australia, Australian Business Dean Council, the Academic Journal Guide release by Chartered Association of Business Schools lists, and the Journal Impact Factor calculated by Clarivate Analytics.

In many countries around the world that use authorship and academic papers for career advancement and recognition, the accurate identity of participating authors is vital. ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), an author disambiguation tool that was created in 2012, is being vociferously implemented across a wide swathe of journals, including by many leading publishers. In some countries, authors who publish in indexed journals, particularly in journals that carry a Clarivate Analytics’ Journal Impact Factor, are rewarded, sometimes even monetarily. A strong incentive to cheat and abuse the publication ethos thus exists. There has been a recent spike in the detection of papers apparently derived from paper mills that have multiple issues with figures. The use of such figures across many papers compromises the integrity of the content in all those papers, with widespread ramifications for the integrity of the biomedical literature and of journals that may be gamed by academics. The use of ORCID does not guarantee the authenticity of authors associated with a paper mill-derived paper, nor does it fortify the paper’s integrity. These weaknesses of ORCID may dampen trust in this tool, especially if the ORCID platform is being populated by “ghost” (empty) ORCID accounts of academics whose identities cannot be clearly verified, or disposable accounts (perhaps created by paper mill operators) that are used only once, exclusively to pass the paper submission step. Open-source forensic tools to assist academics, editors and publishers to detect problematic figures, and more stringent measures by ORCID to ensure robust author identity verification, are urgently required to protect themselves, and the wider biomedical literature.

Predicting the impact of academic papers can help scholars quickly identify the high-quality papers in the field. How to develop efficient predictive model for evaluating potential papers has attracted increasing attention in academia. Many studies have shown that early citations contribute to improving the performance of predicting the long-term impact of a paper. Besides early citations, some bibliometric features and altmetric features have also been explored for predicting the impact of academic papers. Furthermore, paper metadata text such as title, abstract and keyword contains valuable information which has effect on its citation count. However, present studies ignore the semantic information contained in the metadata text. In this paper, we propose a novel citation prediction model based on paper metadata text to predict the long-term citation count, and the core of our model is to obtain the semantic information from the metadata text. We use deep learning techniques to encode the metadata text, and then further extract high-level semantic features for learning the citation prediction task. We also integrate early citations for improving the prediction performance of the model. We show that our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art models in predicting the long-term citation count of the papers, and metadata semantic features are effective for improving the accuracy of the citation prediction models.

Diagnostic and evidential static image, video clip, and sound multimedia are captured during routine clinical care in cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, pathology, physiatry, radiation oncology, radiology, endoscopic procedural specialties, and other medical disciplines. Providers typically describe the multimedia findings in contemporaneous electronic health record clinical notes or associate a textual interpretative report. Visual communication aids commonly used to connect, synthesize, and supplement multimedia and descriptive text outside medicine remain technically challenging to integrate into patient care. Such beneficial interactive elements may include hyperlinks between text, multimedia elements, alphanumeric and geometric annotations, tables, graphs, timelines, diagrams, anatomic maps, and hyperlinks to external educational references that patients or provider consumers may find valuable. This HIMSS-SIIM Enterprise Imaging Community workgroup white paper outlines the current and desired clinical future state of interactive multimedia reporting (IMR). The workgroup adopted a consensus definition of IMR as “interactive medical documentation that combines clinical images, videos, sound, imaging metadata, and/or image annotations with text, typographic emphases, tables, graphs, event timelines, anatomic maps, hyperlinks, and/or educational resources to optimize communication between medical professionals, and between medical professionals and their patients.” This white paper also serves as a precursor for future efforts toward solving technical issues impeding routine interactive multimedia report creation and ingestion into electronic health records.

Our main objective is to create a framework to analyze signals sent from academic journals. The signals chosen for the framework were: journal’ scopes; and the latest published papers. We apply the framework to the field of accounting with the main focus of categorizing the journal scopes and the latest published articles into research topics by using text mining techniques. We analyze the published papers of research topics in accounting journals during the 2016–2018 period. Another objective is to compare research topics from the last published papers with research topics identified in accounting journal scopes. We found a majority of journals with a broader scope in terms of accounting research areas, but we see a concentration on specific research topics by analyzing the papers. In addition, the most signaled accounting areas in scopes are financial accounting and auditing. The framework helps us categorize 5270 research papers into accounting research topics correctly, faster than manually reading titles, abstracts, and keywords. While specific scopes may carry the risk of missing new research trends, broad scopes may require more reviewers from different research areas. Diversity can be seen as applying other methodological choices, theoretical lenses, and conceptual or empirical research approaches. We believe that academic diversity is for the benefit of accounting research.

Support of artificial intelligence, renewable energy and sustainability is currently increasing through the main policies of developed countries, e.g., the White Paper of the European Union. Wind energy is one of the most important renewable sources, growing in both onshore and offshore types. This paper studies the most remarkable artificial intelligence techniques employed in wind turbines monitoring systems. The principal techniques are analysed individually and together: Artificial Neural Networks; Fuzzy Logic; Genetic Algorithms; Particle Swarm Optimization; Decision Making Techniques; and Statistical Methods. The main applications for wind turbines maintenance management are also analysed, e.g., economic, farm location, non-destructive testing, environmental conditions, schedules, operator decisions, power production, remaining useful life, etc. Finally, the paper discusses the main findings of the literature in the conclusions.

During a global health crisis, people are exposed to vast amounts of information from a variety of sources. Here, we assessed which information source could increase knowledge about COVID-19 (Study 1) and COVID-19 vaccines (Study 2). In Study 1, a US census matched sample of 1060 participants rated the accuracy of a set of statements and then were randomly assigned to one of 10 between-subjects conditions of varying sources providing belief-relevant information: a political leader (Trump/Biden), a health authority (Fauci/CDC), an anecdote (Democrat/Republican), a large group of prior participants (Democrats/Republicans/Generic), or no source (Control). Finally, they rated the accuracy of the initial set of statements again. Study 2 involved a replication with a sample of 1876 participants and focused on the COVID-19 vaccine. We found that knowledge increased most when the source of information was a generic group of people, irrespective of participants’ political affiliation. We also found that while expert communications were most successful at increasing Democrats’ vaccination intentions, no source was successful at increasing Republicans’ vaccination intention. Real-time execution of machine learning (ML) pipelines on radiology images is difficult due to limited computing resources in clinical environments, whereas running them in research clusters requires efficient data transfer capabilities. We developed Niffler, an open-source Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) framework that enables ML and processing pipelines in research clusters by efficiently retrieving images from the hospitals’ PACS and extracting the metadata from the images. We deployed Niffler at our institution (Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare network in the state of Georgia) and retrieved data from 715 scanners spanning 12 sites, up to 350 GB/day continuously in real-time as a DICOM data stream over the past 2 years. We also used Niffler to retrieve images bulk on-demand based on user-provided filters to facilitate several research projects. This paper presents the architecture and three such use cases of Niffler. First, we executed an IVC filter detection and segmentation pipeline on abdominal radiographs in real-time, which was able to classify 989 test images with an accuracy of 96.0%. Second, we applied the Niffler Metadata Extractor to understand the operational efficiency of individual MRI systems based on calculated metrics. We benchmarked the accuracy of the calculated exam time windows by comparing Niffler against the Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW). Niffler accurately identified the scanners’ examination timeframes and idling times, whereas CDW falsely depicted several exam overlaps due to human errors. Third, with metadata extracted from the images by Niffler, we identified scanners with misconfigured time and reconfigured five scanners. Our evaluations highlight how Niffler enables real-time ML and processing pipelines in a research cluster.

Advanced visualization of medical imaging has been a motive for research due to its value for disease analysis, surgical planning, and academical training. More recently, attention has been turning toward mixed reality as a means to deliver more interactive and realistic medical experiences. However, there are still many limitations to the use of virtual reality for specific scenarios. Our intent is to study the current usage of this technology and assess the potential of related development tools for clinical contexts. This paper focuses on virtual reality as an alternative to today’s majority of slice-based medical analysis workstations, bringing more immersive three-dimensional experiences that could help in cross-slice analysis. We determine the key features a virtual reality software should support and present today’s software tools and frameworks for researchers that intend to work on immersive medical imaging visualization. Such solutions are assessed to understand their ability to address existing challenges of the field. It was understood that most development frameworks rely on well-established toolkits specialized for healthcare and standard data formats such as DICOM. Also, game engines prove to be adequate means of combining software modules for improved results. Virtual reality seems to remain a promising technology for medical analysis but has not yet achieved its true potential. Our results suggest that prerequisites such as real-time performance and minimum latency pose the greatest limitations for clinical adoption and need to be addressed. There is also a need for further research comparing mixed realities and currently used technologies.

The consolidation of information technology (IT) teams from individual facilities to an enterprise-wide reporting structure and the transition of IT staff from operating within a diagnostic imaging department, such as Radiology, to an enterprise IT group is common. The plan to optimize this workforce can have undesirable and unintended consequences, if not done correctly. For those organizations seeking to optimize their workforce to deliver the best possible IT services, including to areas that produce and use medical imaging, this can be an exercise of balancing specialized knowledge and centralized staffing capacity planning. Successfully blending staff that have developed through careers in either general or imaging IT areas into a single team structure requires an understanding of their traditional attitudes, priorities, and skill sets. This paper explores the historic similarities and differences in the skill sets and work cultures between imaging and Enterprise IT, and how to use both to deliver the best outcomes.

Recently, virus diseases, such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and COVID-19, continue to emerge and pose a severe public health problem. These diseases threaten the lives of many people and cause serious social and economic losses. Recent developments in information technology (IT) and connectivity have led to the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in many industries. These industries, where IoT and AI together are making significant impacts, are the healthcare and the diagnosis department. In addition, by actively communicating with smart devices and various biometric sensors, it is expanding its application fields to telemedicine, healthcare, and disease prevention. Even though existing IoT and AI technologies can enhance disease detection, monitoring, and quarantine, their impact is very limited because they are not integrated or applied rapidly to the emergence of a sudden epidemic. Especially in the situation where infectious diseases are rapidly spreading, the conventional methods fail to prevent large-scale infections and block global spreads through prediction, resulting in great loss of lives. Therefore, in this paper, various sources of infection information with local limitations are collected through virus disease information collector, and AI analysis and severity matching are performed through AI broker. Finally, through the Integrated Disease Control Center, risk alerts are issued, proliferation block letters are sent, and post-response services are provided quickly. Suppose we further develop the proposed integrated virus disease control model. In that case, it will be possible to proactively detect and warn of risk factors in response to infectious diseases that are rapidly spreading worldwide and strengthen measures to prevent spreading of infection in no time.

The digital transformation offers new opportunities for organizations to expand their existing service portfolio in order to achieve competitive advantages. A popular way to create new customer value is the offer of analytics-based services (ABS)—services that apply analytical methods to data to empower customers to make better decisions and to solve complex problems. However, research still lacks to provide a profound conceptualization of this novel service type. Similarly, actionable insights on how to purposefully establish ABS in the market to enrich the service portfolio remain scarce. We perform a cluster analysis of 105 ABS and triangulate it with a revelatory case study to identify four generic ABS archetypes and to unveil their specific service objectives and characteristics. We also isolate essential factors that shape decision-making regarding the choice of adequate archetypes and subsequent transitions between them. The detailed characterization of different ABS types contributes to a more profound theorizing process on ABS as well as provides a systematization for strategic opportunities to enrich service portfolios in practice.

Our aim was to determine the effect of wearing a surgical mask on the number and type of dictation errors in unedited radiology reports. IRB review was waived for this prospective matched-pairs study in which no patient data was used. Model radiology reports (n = 40) simulated those typical for an academic medical center. Six randomized radiologists dictated using speech-recognition software with and without a surgical mask. Dictations were compared to model reports and errors were classified according to type and severity. A statistical model was used to demonstrate that error rates for all types of errors were greater when masks are worn compared to when they are not (unmasked: 21.7 ± 4.9 errors per 1000 words, masked: 27.1 ± 2.2 errors per 1000 words; adjusted p

The image biomarkers standardization initiative (IBSI) was formed to address the standardization of extraction of quantifiable imaging metrics. Despite its effort, there remains a lack of consensus or established guidelines regarding radiomic feature terminology, the underlying mathematics and their implementation across various software programs. This creates a scenario where features extracted using different toolboxes cannot be used to build or validate the same model leading to a non-generalization of radiomic results. In this study, IBSI-established phantom and benchmark values were used to compare the variation of the radiomic features while using 6 publicly available software programs and 1 in-house radiomics pipeline. All IBSI-standardized features (11 classes, 173 in total) were extracted. The relative differences between the extracted feature values from the different software programs and the IBSI benchmark values were calculated to measure the inter-software agreement. To better understand the variations, features are further grouped into 3 categories according to their properties: 1) morphology, 2) statistic/histogram and 3)texture features. While a good agreement was observed for a majority of radiomics features across the various tested programs, relatively poor agreement was observed for morphology features. Significant differences were also found in programs that use different gray-level discretization approaches. Since these software programs do not include all IBSI features, the level of quantitative assessment for each category was analyzed using Venn and UpSet diagrams and quantified using two ad hoc metrics. Morphology features earned lowest scores for both metrics, indicating that morphological features are not consistently evaluated among software programs. We conclude that radiomic features calculated using different software programs may not be interchangeable. Further studies are needed to standardize the workflow of radiomic feature extraction. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) technology is a computer visualization method that projects three-dimensional spatial data on a visualization plane. According to the specific purposes, the specific lab thickness and direction can be selected. This technology can better show organs, such as blood vessels, arteries, veins, and bronchi and so forth, from different directions, which could bring more intuitive and comprehensive results for doctors in the diagnosis of related diseases. However, in this traditional projection technology, the details of the small projected target are not clearly visualized when the projected target is not much different from the surrounding environment, which could lead to missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new technology that can better and clearly display the angiogram. However, to the best of our knowledge, research in this area is scarce. To fill this gap in the literature, in the present study, we propose a new method based on the hybrid of convolutional neural network (CNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to synthesize the projection image. We first adopted the U-net to obtain feature or enhanced images to be projected; subsequently, the RBF neural network performed further synthesis processing for these data; finally, the projection images were obtained. For experimental data, in order to increase the robustness of the proposed algorithm, the following three different types of datasets were adopted: the vascular projection of the brain, the bronchial projection of the lung parenchyma, and the vascular projection of the liver. In addition, radiologist evaluation and five classic metrics of image definition were implemented for effective analysis. Finally, compared to the traditional MIP technology and other structures, the use of a large number of different types of data and superior experimental results proved the versatility and robustness of the proposed method.

Interactions between humans and machines that include artificial intelligence are increasingly common in nearly all areas of life. Meanwhile, AI-products are increasingly endowed with emotional characteristics. That is, they are designed and trained to elicit emotions in humans, to recognize human emotions and, sometimes, to simulate emotions (EAI). The introduction of such systems in our lives is met with some criticism. There is a rather strong intuition that there is something wrong about getting attached to a machine, about having certain emotions towards it, and about getting involved in a kind of affective relationship with it. In this paper, I want to tackle these worries by focusing on the last aspect: in what sense could it be problematic or even wrong to establish an emotional relationship with EAI-systems? I want to show that the justifications for the widespread intuition concerning the problems are not as strong as they seem at first sight. To do so, I discuss three arguments: the argument from self-deception, the argument from lack of mutuality, and the argument from moral negligence.

A prediction model is an indispensable tool in business, helping to make decisions, whether in the short, medium, or long term. In this context, the implementation of machine learning techniques in time series forecasting models has a notorious relevance, as information processing and efficient and dynamic knowledge uncovering are increasingly demanded. This paper develops a model called Variable step-size evolving Participatory Learning with Kernel Recursive Least Squares, VS-ePL-KRLS, applied to the forecast of weekly prices for S500 and S10 diesel oil, at the Brazilian level, for biweekly and monthly horizons. The presented model demonstrates a better accuracy compared with analogous models in the literature, without loss of computational performance for all time series analyzed.

In clinical routine, wound documentation is one of the most important contributing factors to treating patients with acute or chronic wounds. The wound documentation process is currently very time-consuming, often examiner-dependent, and therefore imprecise. This study aimed to validate a software-based method for automated segmentation and measurement of wounds on photographic images using the Mask R-CNN (Region-based Convolutional Neural Network). During the validation, five medical experts manually segmented an independent dataset with 35 wound photographs at two different points in time with an interval of 1 month. Simultaneously, the dataset was automatically segmented using the Mask R-CNN. Afterwards, the segmentation results were compared, and intra- and inter-rater analyses performed. In the statistical evaluation, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out and dice coefficients were calculated. The ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences throughout all raters and the network in the first segmentation round (F = 1.424 and p > 0.228) and the second segmentation round (F = 0.9969 and p > 0.411). The repeated measure analysis demonstrated no statistically significant differences in the segmentation quality of the medical experts over time (F = 6.05 and p > 0.09). However, a certain intra-rater variability was apparent, whereas the Mask R-CNN consistently provided identical segmentations regardless of the point in time. Using the software-based method for segmentation and measurement of wounds on photographs can accelerate the documentation process and improve the consistency of measured values while maintaining quality and precision.

In 2020, as COVID-19 impacted the world, instructional designers quickly came to the forefront of higher education, consulting, and corporate settings. Additionally, in early 2020, the Association for Talent Development (ATD) globally launched their new Talent Development Capability Model. To determine how instructional design is operationalized in various industries, we utilized the Talent Development Capability Model as a framework to review 100 online job postings from LinkedIn, Indeed.com, and HigherEdJobs.com, scanning each for the 23 capabilities identified in the ATD Talent Development Capability Model. Using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) organizational framework as our method of reviewing job postings, we found that instructional design, talent delivery and facilitation, technology application, communication, and collaboration and leadership capabilities appeared the most frequently. Educational requirements were statistically significantly associated with job sectors, as shown in our analysis. With these results and analysis, this research will inform both formal instructional design education programs and job seekers regarding how instructional design is operationalized in job requisitions. This research will also provide insights into alignments with the ATD Talent Development Capability Model and job requisitions.

Data augmentation refers to a group of techniques whose goal is to battle limited amount of available data to improve model generalization and push sample distribution toward the true distribution. While different augmentation strategies and their combinations have been investigated for various computer vision tasks in the context of deep learning, a specific work in the domain of medical imaging is rare and to the best of our knowledge, there has been no dedicated work on exploring the effects of various augmentation methods on the performance of deep learning models in prostate cancer detection. In this work, we have statically applied five most frequently used augmentation techniques (random rotation, horizontal flip, vertical flip, random crop, and translation) to prostate Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging training dataset of 217 patients separately and evaluated the effect of each method on the accuracy of prostate cancer detection. The augmentation algorithms were applied independently to each data channel and a shallow as well as a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) were trained on the five augmented sets separately. We used Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) to evaluate the performance of the trained CNNs on a separate test set of 95 patients, using a validation set of 102 patients for finetuning. The shallow network outperformed the deep network with the best 2D slice-based AUC of 0.85 obtained by the rotation method.

To develop a U-net deep learning method for breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat T1-weighted (T1W) MRI using transfer learning (TL) from a model developed for non-fat-sat images. The training dataset (N = 126) was imaged on a 1.5 T MR scanner, and the independent testing dataset (N = 40) was imaged on a 3 T scanner, both using fat-sat T1W pulse sequence. Pre-contrast images acquired in the dynamic-contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI sequence were used for analysis. All patients had unilateral cancer, and the segmentation was performed using the contralateral normal breast. The ground truth of breast and fibroglandular tissue (FGT) segmentation was generated using a template-based segmentation method with a clustering algorithm. The deep learning segmentation was performed using U-net models trained with and without TL, by using initial values of trainable parameters taken from the previous model for non-fat-sat images. The ground truth of each case was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of the U-net models by calculating the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the overall accuracy based on all pixels. Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the correlation of breast volume and FGT volume between the U-net prediction output and the ground truth. In the training dataset, the evaluation was performed using tenfold cross-validation, and the mean DSC with and without TL was 0.97 vs. 0.95 for breast and 0.86 vs. 0.80 for FGT. When the final model developed with and without TL from the training dataset was applied to the testing dataset, the mean DSC was 0.89 vs. 0.83 for breast and 0.81 vs. 0.81 for FGT, respectively. Application of TL not only improved the DSC, but also decreased the required training case number. Lastly, there was a high correlation (R2 > 0.90) for both the training and testing datasets between the U-net prediction output and ground truth for breast volume and FGT volume. U-net can be applied to perform breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat images, and TL is an efficient strategy to develop a specific model for each different dataset.

We develop and evaluate a deep learning algorithm to classify multiple catheters on neonatal chest and abdominal radiographs. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained using a dataset of 777 neonatal chest and abdominal radiographs, with a split of 81%–9%–10% for training-validation-testing, respectively. We employed ResNet-50 (a CNN), pre-trained on ImageNet. Ground truth labelling was limited to tagging each image to indicate the presence or absence of endotracheal tubes (ETTs), nasogastric tubes (NGTs), and umbilical arterial and venous catheters (UACs, UVCs). The dataset included 561 images containing two or more catheters, 167 images with only one, and 49 with none. Performance was measured with average precision (AP), calculated from the area under the precision-recall curve. On our test data, the algorithm achieved an overall AP (95% confidence interval) of 0.977 (0.679–0.999) for NGTs, 0.989 (0.751–1.000) for ETTs, 0.979 (0.873–0.997) for UACs, and 0.937 (0.785–0.984) for UVCs. Performance was similar for the set of 58 test images consisting of two or more catheters, with an AP of 0.975 (0.255–1.000) for NGTs, 0.997 (0.009–1.000) for ETTs, 0.981 (0.797–0.998) for UACs, and 0.937 (0.689–0.990) for UVCs. Our network thus achieves strong performance in the simultaneous detection of these four catheter types. Radiologists may use such an algorithm as a time-saving mechanism to automate reporting of catheters on radiographs. The advent of internet of things has opened the opportunities for people with disabilities, increased their inclusion and productivity in their living society. Most of the invented smart sensing devices including the wearable ones for users with speech impairments are expensive and not affordable for patients in the low income countries such as Egypt. Morse Glasses is a cost efficient wearable device based on IoT technology and a modified Morse code that tracks the patient’s eyes blinks and translates it into a generated speech. A sequence of Morse encoded alphabets/sentences along with the frequently used ones is displayed and heard on any android supported device that is installed Morse Glasses mobile application. With cost less than 30$, patients with motor neuron diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can communicate easily with the others, express their needs and simply live their life normally.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the long-standing public health practice of contact tracing into the public spotlight. While contact tracing and case investigation have been carefully designed to protect privacy, the huge volume of tracing which is being carried out as part of the pandemic response in the United States is highlighting potential concerns around privacy, legality, and equity. Contact tracing during the pandemic has gained particular attention for the new use of digital technologies—both on the consumer side in the form of Exposure Notification applications, and for public health agencies as digital case management software systems enable massive scaling of operations. While the consumer application side of digital innovation has dominated the news and academic discourse around privacy, people are likely to interact more intensively with public health agencies and their use of digital case management systems. Effective use of digital case management for contact tracing requires revisiting the existing legal frameworks, privacy protections, and security practices for management of sensitive health data. The scale of these tools and demands of an unprecedented pandemic response are introducing new risks through the collection of huge volumes of data, and expanding requirements for more adept data sharing among jurisdictions. Public health agencies must strengthen their best practices for data collection and protection even in the absence of comprehensive or clear guidance. This requires navigating a difficult balance between rigorous data protection and remaining highly adaptive and agile.

The recent introduction of wireless head-mounted displays (HMD) promises to enhance 3D image visualization by immersing the user into 3D morphology. This work introduces a prototype holographic augmented reality (HAR) interface for the 3D visualization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data for the purpose of planning neurosurgical procedures. The computational platform generates a HAR scene that fuses pre-operative MRI sets, segmented anatomical structures, and a tubular tool for planning an access path to the targeted pathology. The operator can manipulate the presented images and segmented structures and perform path-planning using voice and gestures. On-the-fly, the software uses defined forbidden-regions to prevent the operator from harming vital structures. In silico studies using the platform with a HoloLens HMD assessed its functionality and the computational load and memory for different tasks. A preliminary qualitative evaluation revealed that holographic visualization of high-resolution 3D MRI data offers an intuitive and interactive perspective of the complex brain vasculature and anatomical structures. This initial work suggests that immersive experiences may be an unparalleled tool for planning neurosurgical procedures.

Rapid and accurate assessment of endotracheal tube (ETT) location is essential in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting, where timely identification of a mispositioned support device may prevent significant patient morbidity and mortality. This study proposes a series of deep learning-based algorithms which together iteratively identify and localize the position of an ETT relative to the carina on chest radiographs. Using the open-source MIMIC Chest X-Ray (MIMIC-CXR) dataset, a total of 16,000 patients were identified (8000 patients with an ETT and 8000 patients without an ETT). Three different convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms were created. First, a regression loss function CNN was trained to estimate the coordinate location of the carina, which was then used to crop the original radiograph to the distal trachea and proximal bronchi. Second, a classifier CNN was trained using the cropped inputs to determine the presence or absence of an ETT. Finally, for radiographs containing an ETT, a third regression CNN was trained to both refine the coordinate location of the carina and identify the location of the distal ETT tip. Model accuracy was assessed by comparing the absolute distance of prediction and ground-truth coordinates as well as CNN predictions relative to measurements documented in original radiologic reports. Upon five-fold cross validation, binary classification for the presence or absence of ETT demonstrated an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and AUC of 97.14%, 97.37%, 96.89%, 97.12%, 97.15%, and 99.58% respectively. CNN predicted coordinate location of the carina, and distal ETT tip was estimated within a median error of 0.46 cm and 0.60 cm from ground-truth annotations respectively. Overall final CNN assessment of distance between the carina and distal ETT tip was predicted within a median error of 0.60 cm from manual ground-truth annotations, and a median error of 0.66 cm from measurements documented in the original radiology reports. A serial cascaded CNN approach demonstrates high accuracy for both identification and localization of ETT tip and carina on chest radiographs. High performance of the proposed multi-step strategy is in part related to iterative refinement of coordinate localization as well as explicit image cropping which focuses algorithm attention to key anatomic regions of interest.

This study aimed to develop a high-capacity dryer for high-water-content sewage sludge and to experimentally investigate the drying characteristics and cost. A dryer with a drying capacity of 5000 kg that uses electrically heated oil as a drying heat source was fabricated. Its performance was verified, and the drying cost was analyzed by performing experiments using sewage sludge collected in a sewage processing plant as an experimental material. The drying experiment results showed an input water content of 82.0%, an average water content of 3.49% after drying, an average drying rate of 3.3%/h, and an average drying capacity of 130.05 kg/h. After drying, the combustible content of the sewage sludge increased as its water content decreased, whereas its ash content remained relatively constant. Before and after drying, the higher and lower heating values of the sewage sludge were inversely proportional to its water content. In particular, when the water content was 4% or less after drying, the average lower heating value was found to be 4340 kcal/kg. In the drying experiments, the average drying cost was found to be approximately 3.55 ₩/kg. The results of the drying experiments in which oil was used as a heat source to dry high-water-content sewage sludge indicated that the developed stirring-type dryer is sufficiently applicable to sewage sludge drying in terms of drying capacity, drying rate, and drying cost.

Life-threatening novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), also known as COVID-19, has engulfed the world and caused health and economic challenges. To control the spread of COVID-19, a mechanism is required to enforce physical distancing between people. This paper proposes a Blockchain-based framework that preserves patients’ anonymity while tracing their contacts with the help of Bluetooth-enabled smartphones. We use a smartphone application to interact with the proposed blockchain framework for contact tracing of the general public using Bluetooth and to store the obtained data over the cloud, which is accessible to health departments and government agencies to perform necessary and timely actions (e.g., like quarantine the infected people moving around). Thus, the proposed framework helps people perform their regular business and day-to-day activities with a controlled mechanism that keeps them safe from infected and exposed people. The smartphone application is capable enough to check their COVID status after analyzing the symptoms quickly and observes (based on given symptoms) either this person is infected or not. As a result, the proposed Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS) system predicts the COVID status, and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) enhances the accuracy rate to 95.9% compared to state-of-the-art results.

Chest X-ray (CXR) is a medical imaging technology that is common and economical to use in clinical. Recently, coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, and the second wave is rebounding strongly now with the coming winter that has a detrimental effect on the global economy and health. To make pre-diagnosis of COVID-19 as soon as possible, and reduce the work pressure of medical staff, making use of deep learning networks to detect positive CXR images of infected patients is a critical step. However, there are complex edge structures and rich texture details in the CXR images susceptible to noise that can interfere with the diagnosis of the machines and the doctors. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a novel multi-resolution parallel residual CNN (named MPR-CNN) for CXR images denoising and special application for COVID-19 which can improve the image quality. The core of MPR-CNN consists of several essential modules. (a) Multi-resolution parallel convolution streams are utilized for extracting more reliable spatial and semantic information in multi-scale features. (b) Efficient channel and spatial attention can let the network focus more on texture details in CXR images with fewer parameters. (c) The adaptive multi-resolution feature fusion method based on attention is utilized to improve the expression of the network. On the whole, MPR-CNN can simultaneously retain spatial information in the shallow layers with high resolution and semantic information in the deep layers with low resolution. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our MPR-CNN can better retain the texture structure details in CXR images. Additionally, extensive experiments show that our MPR-CNN has a positive impact on CXR images classification and detection of COVID-19 cases from denoised CXR images.

Graphical abstract A novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome is rapidly spreading worldwide. The international health authorities are putting all their efforts on quick diagnosis and placing the patients in quarantine. Although different vaccines have come for quick use as prophylactics, drug repurposing seems to be of paramount importance because of inefficient therapeutic options and clinical trial limitations. Here, we used structure-based drug designing approach to find and check the efficacy of the possible drug that can inhibit coronavirus main protease which is involved in polypeptide processing to functional protein. We performed virtual screening, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations of the FDA-approved drugs against the main protease of SARS-CoV-2. Using well-defined computational methods, we identified amprenavir, cefoperazone, riboflavin, diosmin, nadide and troxerutin approved for human therapeutic uses, as COVID-19 main protease inhibitors. These drugs bind to the SARS-CoV-2 main protease conserved residues of substrate-binding pocket and formed a remarkable number of non-covalent interactions. We have found diosmin as an inhibitor which binds covalently to the COVID-19 main protease. This study provides enough evidences for therapeutic use of these drugs in controlling COVID-19 after experimental validation and clinical demonstration. Owing to the quick spread of minute health-related experiences, the distillation of knowledge from such unstructured narratives is an extremely challenging task. In spite of the success of neural networks methods in improving learning structural reliability, they result in inadequate accuracy of the bio-medical sentiment classification when employing less useful features sets. Therefore, they lack discriminatory potential. In this study, we propose to add a deep associative memory into neural networks for an effective sentiment decomposition, which emphasizes correctly on bio-medical entities related to the extraction of different data-object properties, and contextual-semantics dependencies for a given aspect. The underlying trust of these measures is behind the ability to compute the completion of unseen medical patterns, where comprehensive bio-medical distributed representations are used for representing the formal medical connections from PubMed databases. Experiments on a biomedical sentiment analysis task show that the model provides comprehensive embeddings with meaningful medical patterns. It achieved an average performance of 87% on varied large online datasets. It also outperforms baselines in discovering and identifying medical natural concepts. We provide meaningful support to bio-medical sentiment analysis applications in social networks. Indeed, the facets of this study might be used in many health concerns such as analyzing change in health status or unexpected situations.

Satellite imagery is changing the way we understand and predict economic activity in the world. Advancements in satellite hardware and low-cost rocket launches have enabled near-real-time, high-resolution images covering the entire Earth. It is too labour-intensive, time-consuming and expensive for human annotators to analyse petabytes of satellite imagery manually. Current computer vision research exploring this problem still lack accuracy and prediction speed, both significantly important metrics for latency-sensitive automatized industrial applications. Here we address both of these challenges by proposing a set of improvements to the object recognition model design, training and complexity regularisation, applicable to a range of neural networks. Furthermore, we propose a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) architecture optimised for accurate and accelerated object recognition in multispectral satellite imagery. We show that our FCN exceeds human-level performance with state-of-the-art 97.67% accuracy over multiple sensors, it is able to generalize across dispersed scenery and outperforms other proposed methods to date. Its computationally light architecture delivers a fivefold improvement in training time and a rapid prediction, essential to real-time applications. To illustrate practical model effectiveness, we analyse it in algorithmic trading environment. Additionally, we publish a proprietary annotated satellite imagery dataset for further development in this research field. Our findings can be readily implemented for other real-time applications too.

Different applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have different expectations from the working of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. Some value reliability more than delay incurred while some demand a fair trade-off for the factors like: Throughput, Bit Error Rate (BER) etc. This paper evaluates the performance of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) from 802.15.4 group for WSNs with modified algorithm which helps in reducing the Medium Access Delay and Delay in reaching of the packet from one end to another end. In this paper certain modifications to existing algorithm have been proposed for reducing the Medium Access Delay and to reduce the number of packets dropped. The result comparisons on the performance parameters like: network output load, generated acknowledged traffic, media access delay, battery consumed and delay in packet transmission from one end to another end that the back-off number & exponent values used for transmission play vital role for improving the performance of WSNs as they directly affect the number of packets dropped, successfully acknowledged and Medium Access Delay.

Thyroid disorder affects the regulation of various metabolic processes throughout the human body. The structural and functional disorders can affect the body as well as the brain. The computer-aided diagnosis system can identify the kind of Thyroid disease. One such machine learning framework is presented in this paper to recognize disease existence and type. In this paper, a fuzzy adaptive feature filtration, expansion, and again filtration based model is presented for generating the most relevant and contributing features. This two-level filtration model is processed in a controlled fuzzy-based multi-measure evaluation. At the first level, the composite-fuzzy measures are combined with expert’s recommendations for identifying the ranked and relevant features. At the second level, the statistical computation based distance measure is applied for expanding the featureset. The fuzzification is applied to expanded featureset for transiting the continuous values to fuzzy-values. At this level, the fuzzy-based composite-measure is applied for selecting the most contributing and relevant features over the expanded dataset. This processing featureset is processed by the ELM classifier to predict the disease existence and class. Five experiments are conducted on two datasets for validating the performance and reliability of the proposed framework. The comparative analysis is conducted against the NaiveBayes, Decision Tree, Decision Forest, Random Tree, Multilevel Perceptron, and RBF Networks. The analysis outcome is taken in terms of accuracy, error, and relevancy based parameters. The proposed framework clams the significant gain in accuracy, relevancy, and reduction in the error rate.

In this paper, we proposed implementing a Deep Convolutional Neural Network. A relationship between a noisy character image to its clean counter-part are mapped using Deep Convolutional Neural Network.The overall process is divided into two stages: noise type classification and image denoising. Firstly, the noise type classification identifies the types of noise, and based on this noise type, a particular denoising model is selected, which increases the image denoising performance. The denoising network inputs a noisy image and a target of its clean corresponding image during the training. After the mapping function is trained, the generated model performs character image denoising. Then, on each band, a trained mapping function perform image denoising irrespective of the other band. Finally, each block is assembled to generate a clean image. In this paper, the MNIST and Char74K dataset of handwritten digits diluted with artificial noise divided into ten types are used for experimentation.. Our experimental results show that the proposed techniques perform better image denoising ascompared to the existing methods, both in terms of image noise type classification and image denoising. The overall Character recognition accuracy increased by 66% after performing the proposed denoising technique.

The field of Internet of Things (IoT) and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) system has been developing rapidly causing these technologies to be adopted in multiple domains all around the world. This paper presents the design of a real-time remote monitoring system for vulnerable patients. The proposed device measures body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, Oxygen saturation level and electrocardiogram signals (ECG) of patients admitted into Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Operating Room (OR), and automatically updates all these data on a corresponding hybrid cloud server in every 45 seconds to which a corresponding physician has access. More than 2000 cycles are conducted within a day where all five biomedical parameters are measured and stored on each cycle. Furthermore, the system includes alarm triggering system and emergency Short Message Service (SMS) alert service using GSM technology in order to initiate proper control actions in case of emergencies. This device facilitates doctors, nurses, relatives of patients, or anyone around the world to monitor real-time parameters of patients. The process was tested on 10 patients obtaining a satisfactory outcome. The system proposed in this paper reveals a new vision of biomedical engineering which tends to the era of remotely controllable ICU environment with more interactive, efficient and fast response of both patient and corresponding physicians.

Deep learning models have been very successful in the application of machine learning methods, often out-performing classical statistical models such as linear regression models or generalized linear models. On the other hand, deep learning models are often criticized for not being explainable nor allowing for variable selection. There are two different ways of dealing with this problem, either we use post-hoc model interpretability methods or we design specific deep learning architectures that allow for (more) easy interpretation and explanation. This paper builds on our previous work on the LocalGLMnet architecture that gives an interpretable deep learning architecture. In the present paper, we show how group LASSO regularization (and other regularization schemes) can be implemented within the LocalGLMnet architecture so that we receive feature sparsity for variable selection. We benchmark our approach with the recently developed LassoNet of Lemhadri et al.

In this paper, we introduce a human-robot collaboration (HRC) mold assembly cell to cope with small-volume mold production and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on a human worker during manual mold assembly operation. Besides, the wide variety of types and weights of the mold components motivated us to design an HRC system that consists of two robots. Therefore, we propose two collaboration modes for HRC systems using two robots and develop a task-allocation model to demonstrate the application of these collaboration modes in the mold assembly. The task-allocation model assigns a task based on the task characteristics and capability of agents in the collaboration cell. First, we decompose the assembly operation into functional actions to analyze the characteristics of tasks. Then, we obtain the agent assignment preference based on task characteristics and capability of agents using the analytic network process. Finally, we apply the genetic algorithm in the final task allocation to minimize assembly time, use of a less capable agent, and ergonomic risk. This paper contributes to expanding the HRC system with two robots in the mold assembly to allow the execution of a greater diversity of tasks and improve the assembly time and MSD risk level for the human worker.

Information and Communication Technologies, to a long extent, have a major influence on our social life, economy as well as on worldwide security. Holistically, computer networks embrace the Information Technology. Although the world is never free from people having malicious intents i.e. cyber criminals, network intruders etc. To counter this, Intrusion Detection System (IDS) plays a very significant role in identifying the network intrusions by performing various data analysis tasks. In order to develop robust IDS with accuracy in intrusion detection, various papers have been published over the years using different classification techniques of Data Mining (DM) and Machine Learning (ML) based hybrid approach. The present paper is an in-depth analysis of two focal aspects of Network Intrusion Detection System that includes various pre-processing methods in the form of dimensionality reduction and an assortment of classification techniques. This paper also includes comparative algorithmic analysis of DM and ML techniques, which applied to design an intelligent IDS. An experiment al comparative analysis has been carried out in support the verdicts of this work using ‘Python’ language on ‘kddcup99’ dataset as benchmark . Experimental analysis had been done in which we had found more impact on dimensionality reduction and MLP performed well in the true classification to establish secure network. The motive behind this effort is to detect different kinds of malware as early as possible with accuracy, to provide enhanced observant among various existing techniques that may help the fascinated researchers for future potential works.

The outer dimensions and 3D model of ring forgings in industrial production are the important parameters to ensure the quality of the products. In order to realize the measurement of the outer dimensions and 3D model of the ring forgings, a measuring method for the ring forgings combining with a CCD camera and a 2D laser scanner is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the image information of the ring forgings is obtained by the CCD camera. The radiuses of different sections for ring forgings are acquired by pixel calibration and edge detection. Secondly, the point cloud data of different sections are obtained by laser scanner with the movement of the transmission mechanism. Then, the position discrimination method of straight line fitting is used to reduce the error data. And the radius matching method is used in the further processing of the point cloud data based on image detection, and the point cloud data with high accuracy is further extracted. Finally, the 3D point cloud data and 3D model of the ring forgings are obtained by rotating the 2D point cloud data. The outer dimensions of forgings are derived from the 3D model. The experiments were carried out with two different ring forgings. According to the experimental results, the feasibility of the method proposed in this paper is verified.

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) play an important role in the future of the industrial internet-of-things communication, where smart devices will be connected in a completely distributed manner. In the digital properties owing to the digital data properties, there exist difficulties in directly applying the encryption schemes to the one-dimension data. Thus, it is necessary to develop secure lightweight key frame extraction technique for improving privacy in the e-healthcare. This paper plans to develop the robust and reliable security protocol in MANET IoT application. A chaotic cryptography-based privacy preservation model is proposed in this paper for the purpose of improving the security in the MANET IoT. The key generation process in the chaotic map is optimized by generating optimal key pairs through the newly developed SA-SFO algorithm. The key selected from the chaotic map is influenced by selecting the optimal parameters through the proposed Self Adaptive Sail fish Optimization (SA-SFO). Finally, the experimental analysis is conducted, where for the case of character length as 100; the proposed SA-SFO eventually surpassed the existing ones with the cost function 22% as higher than PSO, 20% higher than GWO, 19% higher than WOA, and 21% higher than SFO respectively. The comparative analysis over the conventional models ensures the efficient performance of the proposed model in terms of diverse analysis in MANET and IoT platform.

As the energy efficiency is a worldwide topic for sustainability in sustainable manufacturing, the industry ought to undertake the responsibility in a low energy manner. For energy efficiency, this paper proposed a novel lightweight non-holonomic spherical underactuated robot (NSUR) with lower energy consumption and fewer actuators than traditional robotics. The kinematics of a robot refers to the motion analysis, such as coordinates, velocity, and acceleration. However, current researches always focus on the holonomic full-actuated robot. This paper is devoted to a kind of novel NSUR and its theoretical kinematics analysis model. After NSUR was introduced, the kinematic representation of NSUR was discussed. A pair inverse and forward kinematics analysis of NSUR was put forward in detail. The kinematic analysis of joint of underactuated robot, as the application of NSUR, is applied to explain and verify this methodology. The measurements and comparisons of energy efficiency between NSUR and traditional robotics are also derived in detail.

The diseases and injuries of the knee joint are the most common orthopedic disorders. Personalized knee models can be helpful in the process of early intervention and lasting treatment techniques development. Fully automatic reconstruction of knee joint anatomical structures from medical images (CT, MRI, ultrasound) remains a challenge. For this reason, most of state-of-the-art knee joint models contain simplifications such as representation of muscles and ligaments as line segments connecting two points which replace attachment areas. The paper presents algorithms for automatic detection of such points on knee CT images. This paper presents three approaches to automatic detection of ligaments and tendons attachment sites on the patients CT images: qualitative anatomical descriptions, analysis of bones curvature, and quantitative anatomical descriptions. Combinations of these approaches result in new automatic detection algorithms. Each algorithm exploits anatomical peculiarities of each attachment site, e.g., bone curvature and number of other attachments in a neighborhood of the site. The experimental dataset consisted of 26 anonymized CT sequences containing right and left knee joints in different resolutions. The proposed algorithms take into account bone surface curvatures and spatial differences in locations of medial and lateral parts of both knees. The algorithms for detection of quadriceps femoris, popliteus, biceps femoris tendons, and lateral collateral and medial collateral ligaments attachment sites are provided, as well as examples of their application. Two algorithms are validated by comparison with known statistics of ligaments lengths and also using ground truth annotations for anatomical landmarks approved by clinical experts. The algorithms simplify generation of patient-specific knee joint models demanded in personalized biomechanical models. The algorithms in the current implementation have two important limitations. First, the correctness of the produced results depends on the bones segmentation quality. Second, the presented algorithms detect a point of the attachment site, which is not necessarily its center. Therefore, manual correction of the attachment site location may be required for attachments with relatively large area.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the type of dementia that affects the world's significant population and is expected to be increased worldwide. In recent years, the main focus of researchers is the early diagnosis of AD because of the unavailability of well-known causes and no permanent curative solution for AD-infected patients. A plethora of machine learning algorithms are utilized by various researchers to provide an accurate diagnosis of the patients who fall under the category of Healthy Controls (HC), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and AD. In this paper, many machine learning algorithms with a special focus on various feature extraction and fusion techniques are explored in detail, which are used by the researchers to investigate various categories of AD from the Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI). Therefore, a systematic review of different feature extraction methods such as statistical, spatial-based, and transform-based is presented in this paper. Further, various open-source standard datasets that researchers used to detect AD from medical images are also discussed in detail. As some of the feature extraction techniques mentioned above generate redundant and large feature sets that significantly affect the classification accuracy, therefore, in this paper, we have also discussed several dimensionality reduction methods available for the extraction of relevant features from medical images. Moreover, future directions are also provided to researchers to aid in the early detection of brain disorders which may be helpful to add productive years to the lives of AD-contaminated patients.

Gesture recognition is the statistical representation used to identify specific gestures of motion involving the hands, head, face, and/or body. The paper addresses Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) using novel machine learning and deep learning approaches. Machine learning algorithms viz. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) was implemented using spatial features comprising of geometrical features and Fourier descriptors. The experimental results revealed that ANN is better compared with SVM results. A novel decision fusion based two stream transfer learning approach was implemented using deep learning techniques in this paper. The two pretrained models MobileNet (0.5 and 1.0) and Inception V3 were used. The Region Of Interest (ROI) provided by YOLO was used to make a decision of which model is used for testing. The novel approach provided real time 99.6% recognition accuracy.

Nowadays, Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has become a trendy topic in manufacturing industries worldwide. The definition is far from being comprehensible for small players, and the practical uptake is ambiguous. Transnational companies are often at the top in deploying I4.0 features, learning primarily from their experimentation. Alternatively, small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), given their less stable value chains and unsteady processes, tend to target most of their efforts on controlling disturbances and adopting solutions for deviation control. Such solutions can be features that set the path for SMEs to transition to I4.0. This paper aims to examine the reported degree of digitalization in implemented solutions in SMEs when handling deviations and analyze the integration of such solutions in their digital transformation process. Systematic literature review (SLR) is used to examine literature published up to and including January 2019. The results show a higher concentration on practical applications rather than on frameworks. Existing frameworks that focus on SMEs address particular elements of I4.0 rather than a gradual shift with a holistic view, increasing the deployment difficulty for SMEs. This paper identifies potential constraints in deployment if such a trend maintains for consecutive years.

Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) is one of the most widely used techniques in identifying the complex structural relationship between various elements. It is commonly used in multiple disciplines but hardly explored its all-encompassing scientific productivities. Hence, this paper has endeavoured to scrutinize 1480 documents using the ISM technique from 2000 to 2020 in the Scopus database. A systematic two-tier approach comprising bibliometric analysis and visualization review has been made with VOSviewer and Biblioshiny software. Extensive data mining has been done to collect required information with certain filters containing document type, language, author, subject, publication status, source title, affiliation, country, and source type. The study has generated information regarding ISM documents, their types, publications, citations, and predictions. The citation analysis is used to ascertain the most prolific and dominant authors, sources, articles, countries, and organizations. The author-keywords, index-keywords, and text data content analysis is conducted to find ISM's hotspots and progress trends. The study has found a rapid exponential pace in annual publications using the ISM technique since 2000. The most prolific and dominant articles based on total citation include Diabat and Govindan, 2011; the top source is the Journal of Cleaner Production. The chief author is Shankar R., the leading organization IIT New Delhi, India, and the leading country is India. The study has explored many research hotspots and less explored areas using ISM techniques. The present research is the first paper that has utilized bibliometric analysis to analyze the ISM publications widely. This bibliometric review has further contributed to the ISM technique, usability, and exploitation areas and future scope for scholars working in this area through its research hotspots and valuable findings.
