The digitalization of agriculture is rapidly changing the way farmers do business. With the integration of advanced technology, farmers are now able to increase efficiency, productivity, and precision in their operations. Digitalization allows for real-time monitoring and management of crops, leading to improved yields and reduced waste. This paper presents a review of some of the use cases that digitalization has made an impact in the automation of open-field and closedfield cultivations by means of collecting data about soils, crop growth, and microclimate, or by contributing to more accurate decisions about water usage and fertilizer application. The objective was to address some of the most recent technological advances that are leading to increased efficiency and sustainability of crop production, reduction in the use of inputs and environmental impacts, and releasing manual workforces from repetitive field tasks. The short discussions included at the end of each case study attempt to highlight the limitations and technological challenges toward successful implementations, as well as to introduce alternative solutions and methods that are rapidly evolving to offer a vast array of benefits for farmers by influencing cost-saving measures. This review concludes that despite the many benefits of digitalization, there are still a number of challenges that need to be overcome, including high costs, reliability, and scalability. Most of the available setups that are currently used for this purpose have been custom designed for specific tasks and are still too expensive to be implemented on commercial scales, while others are still in their early stages of development, making them not reliable or scalable for widespread acceptance and adoption by farmers. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the current state of digitalization in agriculture and its impact on sustainable crop production and food security, this review provides insights for policy-makers, industry stakeholders, and researchers working in this field. The European Green Deal (EGD) represents the response of the European Union (EU) to the climate crisis and a strategy to mitigate against climate change and the associated environmental degradation. European Climate Law supports the EGD by setting the legally binding target of climate neutrality for the EU on a time horizon of 2050 and mandates that member states develop and implement their own Climate Action Plans (CAP), which are strategic roadmaps outlining steps to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Within the Irish context, the CAP focuses on six specific sectors, three of which, namely the energy grid, the built environment and transportation are considered in this research. This policy proposes the retrofitting of all residential buildings in the country to a B2 energy performance certificate (EPC), all public transport and 60% of private vehicles electrified and the full decarbonisation of the electrical grid by 2050. This study aims to implement the targets and goals outlined within CAP 2021 in an urban area of Ireland, specifically a historical city centre. The research leverages digital twin technology developed by IES to model the carbon emissions associated with the built environment, while also incorporating GHG emissions associated with transportation and the grid. Furthermore, CAP scenarios are applied systematically and strategically, prioritising building retrofits based on buildings with similar characteristics, typologies and performance. This study has assessed the performance of CAP about two future grid scenarios (1) business as usual and (2) a decarbonised grid. In both scenarios, CAP was not sufficient to achieve the targets set out, resulting in a shortfall of between 25 and 33%. Based on this outcome it may be concluded that any decarbonisation targets specified should be tested and validated before their implementation in policy. Moreover, current state-of-theart digital twin technologies can facilitate the rapid holistic appraisal of complex multi-sectoral policy at the urban scale, which, depending on data availability, could prove useful in future iterations of CAP at both national and international levels. This paper introduces a transformative "living" hypothesis in architecture and engineering, proposing a paradigm shift from conventional design to regenerative, ecologically interconnected resilient systems. At the heart of our hypothesis is the integration of earth-bound materials and bioreceptive surfaces through metabolic exchanges that can be directly monitored via bioelectricity using advanced computational models and cooperative governance structures. This innovative approach that links the living world with natural materials and digital computing, aims to foster sustainable urban development that dynamically and meaningfully responds to ecological shifts, thereby enhancing social sustainability and environmental resilience. Founded on an active relationship with Earth Based Materials (EBMs) our work operationalises the foundational link between organic life and inorganic matter, e.g., minerals, to establish a dynamic relationship between building materials, and ecological systems drawing on the foundational metabolisms of microbes. To enable this ambitious synthesis, our work builds upon and diverges from traditional foundations by operationalizing actor-network theory, new materialism, and regenerative design principles through the application of bioelectrical microbes to "living" materials and digital twins. We propose a novel resilience framework that not only advocates for a symbiotic relationship between human habitats and natural ecosystems but also outlines practical pathways for the creation of adaptive, self-organizing built environments that are informed by data collection and metabolic feedback loops. These environments are fundamentally regenerative, dynamic, and environmentally responsive in ways that can be understood and engaged by human engineers and designers, transcending current sustainability and resilience targets through a methodology rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. We address challenges such as regulatory barriers, lack of standardization, and perceptions of inferiority compared to conventional materials, proposing a new standardization framework adaptable to the unique properties of these materials. Our vision is supported by advanced predictive digital modelling techniques and sensors, including the integration of biofilms that generate action potentials, enabling the development of Digital Twins that respond to metabolic signals to enhance sustainability, biodiversity, and ultimately generate environmentally positive socio-economic outcomes. This paper reviews existing methodologies to establish an overview of state-of-the-art developments and offers a clear, actionable plan and recommendations for the realization of regenerative and resilient systems in urban development. It contributes a unique perspective on sustainable urban development, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach, which integrates the foundational metabolism of microbes, assisted by big biological data and artificial intelligences that act in concert to respect both the environment and the intricate dynamics of living systems. Cell level functions underlie tissue and organ physiology. Gene expression patterns offer extensive views of the pathways and processes within and between cells. Single cell transcriptomics provides detailed information on gene expression within cells, cell types, subtypes and their relative proportions in organs. Functional pathways can be scalably connected to physiological functions at the cell and organ levels. Integrating experimentally obtained gene expression patterns with prior knowledge of pathway interactions enables identification of networks underlying whole cell functions such as growth, contractility, and secretion. These pathways can be computationally modeled using differential equations to simulate cell and organ physiological dynamics regulated by gene expression changes. Such computational systems can be thought of as parts of digital twins of organs. Digital twins, at the core, need computational models that represent in detail and simulate how dynamics of pathways and networks give rise to whole cell level physiological functions. Integration of transcriptomic responses and numerical simulations could simulate and predict whole cell functional outputs from transcriptomic data. We developed a computational pipeline that integrates gene expression timelines and systems of coupled differential equations to generate cell-type selective dynamical models. We tested our integrative algorithm on the eicosanoid biosynthesis network in macrophages. Converting transcriptomic changes to a dynamical model allowed us to predict dynamics of prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis and secretion by macrophages that matched published lipidomics data obtained in the same experiments. Integration of cell-level system biology simulations with genomic and clinical data using a knowledge graph framework will allow us to create explicit predictive models that mechanistically link genomic determinants to organ function. Such integration requires a multi-domain ontological framework to connect genomic determinants to gene expression and cell pathways and functions to organ level phenotypes in healthy and diseased states. This research paper presents the development and analysis of a multifaceted smart grid prototype. It combines various technologies for the smart grid operation. The first technology is environmental analysis of smart grid and solar panel cleaning. Secondly, radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based security and access control system has been integrated for smart grid. The third component is internet of things (IoT)-based energy monitoring and load management. For environmental analysis sensors such as temperature, humidity, light-dependent resistor, and flame sensors are connected to a NodeMCU controller for real time monitoring. Moreover, IoT based solar cleaning system is developed in the form of prototype with the help of Blynk and servo motor. The second component of prototype is smart security system which is developed with the help of Arduino and RFID module to facilitate secure access control. The third part of prototype employs voltage and current sensors with an ESP32 microcontroller and the Blynk application for real-time energy consumption analysis. This setup enables remote monitoring of voltage, power dynamics, and consumption patterns in a smart grid. It also offers an IoT based solution for load management and load shedding within the smart grid. Digital twins represent a promising approach for sustainable building operations and management in the context of the carbon neutrality goals of the European Union (EU). Using OpenStudio, an opensource platform for building energy modeling, we demonstrated the creation and editing of building digital twins. OpenStudio provides a user-friendly interface and extensive simulation capabilities, allowing detailed and accurate modeling of building components and systems. Using OpenStudio Measures, users can automate tasks and customize simulation models to optimize the building performance. The process of creating a building digital twin involves collecting historical data and accurately representing the building geometry; materials; schedules; and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Challenges such as data availability and model accuracy highlight the importance of modeling practices. Editing the digital twin involves modifying the OpenStudio model files and EnergyPlus weather files to simulate different building operation scenarios. Python programming language opportunities were considered for digital twin file modification. The potential of digital twins lies in their ability to simulate future building conditions and optimize building system settings. By integrating digital twins with machine learning algorithms and connecting them directly to building management systems, optimal building control strategies can be automated, thereby reducing energy consumption and improving occupant comfort levels. Accurate CO2 tracking in electric substation construction is vital for climate efforts, using monocular SLAM for monitoring despite challenges like sunlight and complex terrain. Additionally, these methods typically yield only aggregate carbon emission data, thereby lacking the granularity necessary for precise monitoring throughout the construction process. These limitations compromise mapping accuracy and impede the integration of digital twins and IoT technologies. Addressing these issues, this paper proposed a methodology combining red, green, and blue (RGB) cameras and multi-camera collaboration with digital design systems, enhancing SLAM capabilities. The advanced technique integrated methods including overlap estimation, depth reasoning, noise reduction, and surface reconstruction to create accurate 3D models, enhancing scene reconstruction and real-time CO2 tracking during construction and operation. Leveraging continuous on-site camera monitoring as a substitute for manual inspections, it significantly contributes to the compilation of a comprehensive carbon emission database within a digital twin framework. Experimental results confirmed the proposed method's superiority over previous works in real-time CO2 estimation, enhancing decision-making, resource management, and sustainable energy development. A transformer inter-turn fault identification method is proposed based on the digital twin concept to tackle the challenges of high operational complexity and low accuracy associated with traditional transformer fault identification methods. Initially, the Bald Eagle Search algorithm is employed to optimize the critical parameters of the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), determining the optimal input layer weight and hidden layer threshold of the Extreme Learning Machine. Subsequently, leveraging the digital twin concept, a digital replica of the physical transformer is established, enabling multi-physical field coupling simulation encompassing electrical, thermal, and acoustic domains to elucidate the variation patterns of various physical parameters across different operational scenarios and fault scenarios. Furthermore, key physical characteristic parameters such as sound pressure and winding hot spot temperature are carefully selected to drive a fault identification model tailored to inter-turn faults within the framework of the digital twin concept. Through a detailed investigation using 630 kV A/10 kV transformers as a case study, the results exhibit an impressive fault identification accuracy of 95.24% for the proposed method. Comparative analysis reveals notable enhancements in fault identification accuracy of 12.22%, 7.85%, and 3.73% for ELM, Support Vector Machine and Tuna Swarm Optimization --ELM models, respectively. These findings underscore the effectiveness and practicality of the transformer inter-turn fault identification method based on the digital twin concept, offering valuable insights for the real-time monitoring and diagnosis of inter-turn faults in transformers. As robot technologies are rapidly improving, an increasing number of new ideas on utilizing robots for automated operation and maintenance tasks in nuclear power plants (NPPs) are being studied. However, due to safety concerns, researchers hardly found opportunities to test their new robot solutions on physical NPPs. In that sense, an efficient and realistic simulation environment plays a vital role in the development of automation systems for an NPP. In this paper, we propose the design of a 3D digital twin system capable of simulating NPP in real-time. This system obtains the data from a full-scope NPP simulator to reproduce the operating conditions of the plant. In addition, a scenario of a team of robots performing inspection tasks like temperature and pressure measurements will highlight its usability. This system enables development of intelligent robot swarms to deploy for inspection and maintenance purposes. It will positively impact autonomous control and operations for many types of reactors by reducing uncertainty in autonomous control and providing the tools necessary for remote intervention. The aerospace industry prioritises safety protocols to prevent accidents that can result in injuries, fatalities, or aircraft damage. One of the potential hazards that can occur while manoeuvring aircraft in and out of a hangar is collisions with other aircraft or buildings, which can lead to operational disruption and costly repairs. To tackle this issue, we have developed the Smart Hangar project, which aims to alert personnel of increased risks and prevent incidents from happening. The Smart Hangar project uses computer vision, LiDAR, and ultra-wideband sensors to track all objects and individuals within the hangar space. These data inputs are combined to form a real-time 3D Digital Twin (DT) of the hangar environment. The Active Safety system then uses the DT to perform real-time path planning, collision prediction, and safety alerts for tow truck drivers and hangar personnel. This paper provides a detailed overview of the system architecture, including the technologies used, and highlights the system's performance. By implementing this system, we aim to reduce the risk of accidents in the aerospace industry and increase safety for all personnel involved. In the era of intelligence and automation, robots play a significant role in the field of automated welding, enhancing efficiency and precision. However, challenges persist in scenarios demanding complexity and higher precision, such as low welding planning efficiency and inaccurate weld seam defect detection. Therefore, based on digital twin technology and kernel correlation filtering algorithm, a welding tracking model is proposed. Firstly, the kernel correlation filtering algorithm is used to train the filter on the first frame of the collected image, determine the position of image features in the region, extract histogram features of image blocks, and then train the filter using ridge regression to achieve welding trajectory tracking. Additionally, an intelligent weld seam detection model is introduced, employing a backbone feature network for feature extraction, feature fusion through a feature pyramid, and quality detection of weld seams through head classification. During testing of the tracking model, the maximum tracking error is -0.232 mm, with an average absolute tracking error of 0.08 mm, outperforming other models. Comparatively, in tracking accuracy, the proposed model exhibits the fastest convergence with a precision rate of 0.845, surpassing other models. In weld seam detection, the proposed model excels with a detection accuracy of 97.35% and minimal performance loss at 0.023. In weld seam quality and melt depth error detection, the proposed model achieves errors within the range of -0.06 mm, outperforming the other two models. These results highlight the outstanding detection capabilities of the proposed model. Automated disassembly is increasingly in focus for Recycling, Re-use, and Remanufacturing (Re-X) activities. Trends in digitalization, in particular digital twin (DT) technologies and the digital product passport, as well as recently proposed European legislation such as the Net Zero and the Critical materials Acts will accelerate digitalization of product documentation and factory processes. In this contribution we look beyond these activities by discussing digital information for stakeholders at the Re-X segment of the value-chain. Furthermore, we present an approach to automated product disassembly based on different levels of available product information. The challenges for automated disassembly and the subsequent requirements on modeling of disassembly processes and product states for electronic waste are examined. The authors use a top-down (e.g., review of existing standards and process definitions) methodology to define an initial data model for disassembly processes. An additional bottom-up approach, whereby 5 exemplary electronics products were manually disassembled, was employed to analyze the efficacy of the initial data model and to offer improvements. Digital twins (DT) are synchronized clones that mirror their physical counterparts at all times, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, decision-making, and planning for optimized operations. Digital twins can transcend traditional two-dimensional interfaces by incorporating VR/AR/MR (XR) technology, providing immersive, intuitive, and interactive representations of systems, assets, and processes. Furthermore, real-time data from sensors, simulations, and other sources can be integrated into the XR-enabled digital twins, leading to better and more intuitive understanding and to more efficiently monitor, analyze, and maintain complex systems such as nuclear assets. Immersive, interactive, multi-player XR capabilities embedded in DTs will allow spatially accurate and more realistic representation, leading to improved risk assessment, optimized and predictive maintenance scheduling, enhanced situational awareness, and more effective communication among interdisciplinary teams. By combining the strengths of XR and digital twins, nuclear facilities can achieve heightened safety, operational efficiency, and decision-making accuracy. Marrying XR technology with digital twins is also likely to extend the utilization of digital twins to optimize those aspects of the design and operation of nuclear assets that involve human beings-specifically in human factors engineering. Training can also be significantly enhanced if DTs are linked with XR technology. These systems may also be used to assess human performance through human factors engineering for the safety analysis of nuclear assets. A specific example is assessing human performance in semi-autonomous nuclear assets or operating multiple nuclear assets. After briefly reviewing digital twins of nuclear systems from the perspective of XR technology, this paper summarises our work in the nuclear energy space on VR/AR/MR and how these can be integrated into the newly evolving DTs of nuclear assets. The paper also describes the potential use of such systems in optimizing the design and operations of nuclear systems. The recently proposed Chemical Reaction Neural Network (CRNN) discovers chemical reaction pathways from time resolved species concentration data in a deterministic manner. Since the weights and biases of a CRNN are physically interpretable, the CRNN acts as a digital twin of a classical chemical reaction network. In this study, we employ a Bayesian inference analysis coupled with neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) on this digital twin to discover chemical reaction pathways in a probabilistic manner. This allows for estimation of the uncertainty surrounding the learned reaction network. To achieve this, we propose an algorithm which combines neural ODEs with a preconditioned stochastic gradient langevin descent (pSGLD) Bayesian framework, and ultimately performs posterior sampling on the neural network weights. We demonstrate the successful implementation of this algorithm on several reaction systems by not only recovering the chemical reaction pathways but also estimating the uncertainty in our predictions. We compare the results of the pSGLD with that of the standard SGLD and show that this optimizer more efficiently and accurately estimates the posterior of the reaction network parameters. Additionally, we demonstrate how the embedding of scientific knowledge improves extrapolation accuracy by comparing results to purely data-driven machine learning methods. Mechanistic learning refers to the synergistic combination of mechanistic mathematical modeling and data-driven machine or deep learning. This emerging field finds increasing applications in (mathematical) oncology. This review aims to capture the current state of the field and provides a perspective on how mechanistic learning may progress in the oncology domain. We highlight the synergistic potential of mechanistic learning and point out similarities and differences between purely data-driven and mechanistic approaches concerning model complexity, data requirements, outputs generated, and interpretability of the algorithms and their results. Four categories of mechanistic learning (sequential, parallel, extrinsic, intrinsic) of mechanistic learning are presented with specific examples. We discuss a range of techniques including physics-informed neural networks, surrogate model learning, and digital twins. Example applications address complex problems predominantly from the domain of oncology research such as longitudinal tumor response predictions or time-to-event modeling. As the field of mechanistic learning advances, we aim for this review and proposed categorization framework to foster additional collaboration between the data- and knowledge-driven modeling fields. Further collaboration will help address difficult issues in oncology such as limited data availability, requirements of model transparency, and complex input data which are embraced in a mechanistic learning framework. Introduction: Digital twins can accelerate sustainable development by leveraging big data and artificial intelligence to simulate state, reactions and potential developments of physical systems. In doing so, they can create a comprehensive basis for data-driven policy decisions. One of the purposes of digital twins is to facilitate the implementation of the EU’s Green Deal-in line with internationally binding climate and environmental targets. One prerequisite for the success of digital twins is a comprehensive, high-quality database. This requires a suitable legal framework that ensures access to such data. Methods: Applying a qualitative governance analysis, the following article examines if the EU’s strategies and legal acts on data governance are paving the way for digital twin projects which promote sustainability. Results: Results show important starting points for open and fair data use within the growing field of EU digital law. As the "blood vessels" and "nerves" of the power grid, cables are important carriers for transmitting electric energy, and their failures will affect the safe and stable operation of the power grid. In this paper, a digital twin model of thermal characteristics is constructed for 10 kV YJVx400 cluster cable and its joint model. Based on the multi-physical field coupling analysis method, the fluid field, temperature field and current-carrying capacity of the cluster cable are analyzed. The temperature rise and airflow distribution characteristics of thejoint and its external insulation when the defect of joint false connection occurs are analyzed. Based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP), weights are assigned to the locations of multiple measurement points of the cable external insulation, and the temperature distribution of each measurement point is combined with the digital twin technology to calculate the hot spot temperature of the cable, so as to assess the defects of the joints of the cables. The digital twin platform is used for real-time monitoring of cable status and assessment of defects. The temperature rise experiments of cables under different carrying capacity and joint defects show that this method can accurately and efficiently calculate hot spot temperatures and assess defects of joints in cluster cables. Combining remote-sensing data with in-situ observations to achieve a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the ocean state presents significant challenges for traditional interpolation techniques. To address this, we developed the CLuster Optimal Interpolation Neural Network (CLOINet), which combines the robust mathematical framework of the Optimal Interpolation (OI) scheme with a self-supervised clustering approach. CLOINet efficiently segments remote sensing images into clusters to reveal non-local correlations, thereby enhancing fine-scale oceanic reconstructions. We trained our network using outputs from an Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM), which also facilitated various testing scenarios. Our Observing System Simulation Experiments aimed to reconstruct deep salinity fields using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or Sea Surface Height (SSH), alongside sparse in-situ salinity observations. The results showcased a significant reduction in reconstruction error up to 40% and the ability to resolve scales 50% smaller compared to baseline OI techniques. Remarkably, even though CLOINet was trained exclusively on simulated data, it accurately reconstructed an unseen SST field using only glider temperature observations and satellite chlorophyll concentration data. This demonstrates how deep learning networks like CLOINet can potentially lead the integration of modeling and observational efforts in developing an ocean digital twin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies have shown that coordination among neural ensembles is a key to understand human cognition. A well charted path is to identify coordination states associated with cognitive functions from spectral changes in the oscillations of EEG or MEG. A growing number of studies suggest that the tendency to switch between coordination states, sculpts the dynamic repertoire of the brain and can be indexed by a measure known as metastability. In this article, we characterize perturbations in the metastability of global brain network dynamics following Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation that could quantify the duration for which information processing is altered. Thus allowing researchers to understand the network effects of brain stimulation, standardize stimulation protocols and design experimental tasks. We demonstrate the effect empirically using publicly available datasets and use a digital twin (a whole brain connectome model) to understand the dynamic principles that generate such observations. We observed a significant reduction in metastability, concurrent with an increase in coherence following single-pulse TMS reflecting the existence of a window where neural coordination is altered. The reduction in complexity was validated by an additional measure based on the Lempel-Ziv complexity of microstate labeled EEG data. Interestingly, higher frequencies in the EEG signal showed faster recovery in metastability than lower frequencies. The digital twin shed light on how the phase resetting introduced by the single-pulse TMS in local cortical networks can propagate globally, giving rise to changes in metastability and coherence. Yet, there are many unexplored opportunities to utilize digital twins for facilitating the transformation toward a climate-neutral building stock while also meeting the expectations from the building occupants. This article presents a case study of a digital twin, developed for an existing commercial building stock of campus areas in Sweden. The overarching purpose of the digital twin is to support both building occupants and building operators. This two-fold human-centric approach represents a novel approach for building digital twins. The digital twin is based on 3D scanning, and together with geospatial data, a real-like navigational indoor environment is created. Three innovative features are presented: the building analysis module, the digital twin mobile application, and the building operations module. The results show that the digital twin improves the building occupant's experience by supporting navigation and providing access to the room booking system via this dedicated interface. Building management is also benefited by the digital twin through easier access to building data aggregated into one platform and a state-of-the-art analysis tool for optimizing the use of indoor space. The digital twin holds future potential to achieve operational excellence by incorporating feedback mechanisms and utilizing artificial intelligence to enable intelligent fault detection and prevention. The digitalization of agriculture is rapidly changing the way farmers do business. With the integration of advanced technology, farmers are now able to increase efficiency, productivity, and precision in their operations. Digitalization allows for real-time monitoring and management of crops, leading to improved yields and reduced waste. This paper presents a review of some of the use cases that digitalization has made an impact in the automation of open-field and closed-field cultivations by means of collecting data about soils, crop growth, and microclimate, or by contributing to more accurate decisions about water usage and fertilizer application. The objective was to address some of the most recent technological advances that are leading to increased efficiency and sustainability of crop production, reduction in the use of inputs and environmental impacts, and releasing manual workforces from repetitive field tasks. The short discussions included at the end of each case study attempt to highlight the limitations and technological challenges toward successful implementations, as well as to introduce alternative solutions and methods that are rapidly evolving to offer a vast array of benefits for farmers by influencing cost-saving measures. This review concludes that despite the many benefits of digitalization, there are still a number of challenges that need to be overcome, including high costs, reliability, and scalability. Most of the available setups that are currently used for this purpose have been custom designed for specific tasks and are still too expensive to be implemented on commercial scales, while others are still in their early stages of development, making them not reliable or scalable for widespread acceptance and adoption by farmers. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the current state of digitalization in agriculture and its impact on sustainable crop production and food security, this review provides insights for policy-makers, industry stakeholders, and researchers working in this field.

Advanced manufacturing techniques and digital twin technology are rapidly transforming the nuclear industry, offering the potential to enhance productivity, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Customized parts are being produced using additive manufacturing, automation, and robotics, while digital twin technology enables the virtual modeling and optimization of complex systems. These advanced technologies can significantly improve operational efficiency, predict system behavior, and optimize maintenance schedules in the nuclear energy sector, leading to heightened safety and reduced downtime. However, the nuclear industry demands the highest levels of safety and security, as well as intricate manufacturing processes and operations. Thus, challenges such as data management and cybersecurity must be addressed to fully realize the potential of advanced manufacturing techniques and digital twin technology in the nuclear industry. This comprehensive review highlights the critical role of digital twin technology with advanced manufacturing toward nuclear energy to improve performance, minimize downtime, and heighten safety, ultimately contributing to the global energy mix by providing dependable and low-carbon electricity. Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) could yield new insights into the potential causes of multiple sclerosis (MS) and factors influencing its course as the use of AI opens new possibilities regarding the interpretation and use of big data from not only a cross-sectional, but also a longitudinal perspective. For each patient with MS, there is a vast amount of multimodal data being accumulated over time. But for the application of AI and related technologies, these data need to be available in a machine-readable format and need to be collected in a standardized and structured manner. Through the use of mobile electronic devices and the internet it has also become possible to provide healthcare services from remote and collect information on a patient's state of health outside of regular check-ups on site. Against this background, we argue that the concept of pathways in healthcare now could be applied to structure the collection of information across multiple devices and stakeholders in the virtual sphere, enabling us to exploit the full potential of AI technology by e.g., building digital twins. By going digital and using pathways, we can virtually link patients and their caregivers. Stakeholders then could rely on digital pathways for evidence-based guidance in the sequence of procedures and selection of therapy options based on advanced analytics supported by AI as well as for communication and education purposes. As far as we aware of, however, pathway modelling with respect to MS management and treatment has not been thoroughly investigated yet and still needs to be discussed. Intelligent construction is a necessary way to improve the traditional construction method, and digital twin can be a crucial technology to promote intelligent construction. However, the construction field currently needs a unified method to build a standardized and universally applicable digital twin model, which is incredibly challenging in construction. Therefore, this paper proposes a general method to construct a digital twin construction process model based on the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard, aiming to realize real-time monitoring, control, and visualization management of the construction site. The method constructs a digital twin fusion model from three levels: geometric model, resource model, and behavioral model by establishing an IFC semantic model of the construction process, storing the fusion model data and the construction site data into a database, and completing the dynamic interaction of the twin data in the database. At the same time, the digital twin platform is developed to realize the visualization and control of the construction site. Combined with practical cases and analysis, the implementation effect of the method is shown and verified. The results show that the method can adapt itself to different scenarios on the construction site, which is conducive to promoting application of the digital twin in the field of construction and provides a reference to the research of practicing digital twin theory and practice. Due to the harsh environment of highway tunnels and frequent breakdowns of various detection sensors and surveillance devices, the operational management of highway tunnels lacks effective data support. This paper analyzes the characteristics of operational surveillance data in highway tunnels. It proposes a multimodal information fusion method based on CNN-LSTM-attention and designs and develops a digital twin for highway tunnel operations. The system addresses issues such as insufficient development and coordination of the technical architecture of operation control systems, weak information service capabilities, and insufficient data application capabilities. The system also lacks intelligent decision-making and control capabilities. The developed system achieves closed-loop management of "accurate perception-risk assessment-decision warning-emergency management" for highway tunnel operations based on data-driven approaches. The engineering demonstration application underscores the system's capacity to enhance tunnel traffic safety, diminish tunnel management costs, and elevate tunnel driving comfort. Emergency disposal is a critical aspect for railway stations to ensure safety. This requires the implementation of emergency plan simulations and cost- effective immersive drills. In the paper, we incorporate a set of disposals for events into emergency processes and model the personnel, supplies, and equipment to create multiple emergency scenarios. Additionally, we introduce a digital twin-based solution for multiple scenarios of emergencies. This solution completely restores the key components of a station in the information space and provides an immersive way for emergency disposals. The four-dimensional model used in the solution simulates and interacts with the station, and it is composed of the details of passenger station physical entity, multi-scenario emergency virtual entity, digital twin connection, and emergency twin service. The digital twin for versatile emergency events such as fire disaster, natural disaster (e.g., flood, earthquake), social security incident, and public health event have been constructed using the model. The solution was tested at Qinghe, a station during Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway in China. By utilizing the actual operation data of Qinghe, we validated the multi-scenario emergency drills, simulated the corresponding emergency disposal plans, and assessed the proposed solution from three aspects: the fidelity of the real-world simulation, coverage of the multiple emergency scenarios, and the user-friendliness. The nuclear energy industry is looking to next-generation reactor designs to augment, diversify, and expand generation capacity in an increasingly complex and varied energy landscape. A key element in this objective is microreactors—small nuclear reactors which can provide flexible capacity at a reduced scale compared to traditional large-scale nuclear reactors. Specifically, microreactors could be used to provide clean, reliable combined heat and power to remote communities, worksites, or facilities. However, the construction and operations and maintenance costs to supply the required operator staffing and physical supporting assets, such as control rooms, could be a limiting factor for first adopters of the technology. Opportunities to reduce the cost of monitoring and control activities could enable early adoption, allowing economies of learning to take effect, spurring further adoption. A reduction in the number and cost intensity of control rooms and operators per deployed microreactor could significantly decrease the overall cost for a fleet of microreactors. To optimize microreactor economic competitiveness, one solution would be to establish an off-site operation facility for centralized monitoring and control (CM&C) of a fleet of microreactors. Leveraging advances in digital instrumentation and control systems could bolster the safety, reliability, and security of the remote communication architecture inherently required to operate remotely. Digital twins (DTs) are virtual replicas of physical assets which can be used for a variety of applications, including analyzing I&C signals against a validated model to perform several analysis and prediction functions. When implemented properly, DTs can potentially detect anomalies and component failures, and serve as a diagnostic tool for operators. These technologies can enhance operator understanding and awareness, reduce the management demand time on operators, and increase asset uptime by providing early alerts for failures alongside insights to aid in predictive maintenance. Furthermore, a DT system could enhance the secure and reliable communication architecture necessary for remote microreactor operation by verifying signals and suggesting or automating controls, thereby boosting their economic viability. This research examines the economic effects of various control strategies ranging from many individually and on-site controlled reactors to co-management of all microreactors in a system from a single, off-site control center. Digital twins (DT) are synchronized clones that mirror their physical counterparts at all times, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, decision-making, and planning for optimized operations. Digital twins can transcend traditional two-dimensional interfaces by incorporating VR/AR/MR (XR) technology, providing immersive, intuitive, and interactive representations of systems, assets, and processes. Furthermore, real-time data from sensors, simulations, and other sources can be integrated into the XR-enabled digital twins, leading to better and more intuitive understanding and to more efficiently monitor, analyze, and maintain complex systems such as nuclear assets. Immersive, interactive, multi-player XR capabilities embedded in DTs will allow spatially accurate and more realistic representation, leading to improved risk assessment, optimized and predictive maintenance scheduling, enhanced situational awareness, and more effective communication among interdisciplinary teams. By combining the strengths of XR and digital twins, nuclear facilities can achieve heightened safety, operational efficiency, and decision-making accuracy. Marrying XR technology with digital twins is also likely to extend the utilization of digital twins to optimize those aspects of the design and operation of nuclear assets that involve human beings–specifically in human factors engineering. Training can also be significantly enhanced if DTs are linked with XR technology. These systems may also be used to assess human performance through human factors engineering for the safety analysis of nuclear assets. A specific example is assessing human performance in semi-autonomous nuclear assets or operating multiple nuclear assets. After briefly reviewing digital twins of nuclear systems from the perspective of XR technology, this paper summarises our work in the nuclear energy space on VR/AR/MR and how these can be integrated into the newly evolving DTs of nuclear assets. The paper also describes the potential use of such systems in optimizing the design and operations of nuclear systems. As XR technology advances, its symbiotic relationship with digital twins can significantly reshape the landscape of nuclear operations and asset management.

This amazing ascent raises the question of what the community should do next. The article outlines our personal vision for the future of computational systems biology, suggesting the need to address both mindsets and methodologies. We present this vision by focusing on current and anticipated research goals, the development of strong computational tools, likely prominent applications, education of the nextgeneration of scientists, and outreach to the public. In our opinion, two classes of broad research goals have emerged in recent years and will guide future efforts. The first goal targets computational models of increasing size and complexity, aimed at solving emerging health-related challenges, such as realistic whole-cell and organ models, disease simulators and digital twins, in silico clinical trials, and clinically translational applications in the context of therapeutic drug development. Such large models will also lead us toward solutions to pressing issues in agriculture and environmental sustainability, including sufficient food availability and life in changing habitats. The second goal is a deep understanding of the essence of system designs and strategies with which nature solves problems. This understanding will help us explain observed biological structures and guide forays into synthetic biological systems. Regarding effective methodologies, we suggest efforts toward automated data pipelines from raw biomedical data all the way to spatiotemporal mechanistic model. These will be supported by dynamic methods of statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and streamlined strategies of dynamic model design, striking a fine balance between modeling realistic complexity and abstracted simplicity. Finally, we suggest the need for a concerted, community-wide emphasis on effective education in systems biology, implemented as a combination of formal instruction and hands-on mentoring. The educational efforts should furthermore be extended toward the public through books, blogs, social media, and interactive networking opportunities, with the ultimate goal of training in state-of-the-art technology while recapturing the lost art of synthesis. Healthcare has always been a strategic domain in which innovative technologies can be applied to increase the effectiveness of services and patient care quality. Recent advancements have been made in the adoption of Digital Twins (DTs) and Personal Knowledge Graphs (PKGs) in this field. Despite this, their introduction has been hindered by the complex nature of the context itself which leads to many challenges both technical and organizational. In this article, we reviewed the literature about these technologies and their integrations, identifying the most critical requirements for clinical platforms. These latter have been used to design CONNECTED (COmpreheNsive and staNdardized hEalth-Care plaTforms to collEct and harmonize clinical Data), a conceptual framework aimed at defining guidelines to overcome the crucial issues related to the development of healthcare applications. It is structured in a multi-layer shape, in which heterogeneous data sources are first integrated, then standardized, and finally used to realize general-purpose DTs of patients backed by PKGs and accessible through dedicated APIs. These DTs will be the foundation on which smart applications can be built.

Digital twins are made of a real-world component where data is measured and a virtual component where those measurements are used to parameterize computational models. There is growing interest in applying digital twins-based approaches to optimize personalized treatment plans and improve health outcomes. The integration of artificial intelligence is critical in this process, as it enables the development of sophisticated disease models that can accurately predict patient response to therapeutic interventions. There is a unique and equally important application of AI to the real-world component of a digital twin when it is applied to medical interventions. The patient can only be treated once, and therefore, we must turn to the experience and outcomes of previously treated patients for validation and optimization of the computational predictions. The physical component of a digital twins instead must utilize a compilation of available data from previously treated cancer patients whose characteristics (genetics, tumor type, lifestyle, etc.) closely parallel those of a newly diagnosed cancer patient for the purpose of predicting outcomes, stratifying treatment options, predicting responses to treatment and/or adverse events. These tasks include the development of robust data collection methods, ensuring data availability, creating precise and dependable models, and establishing ethical guidelines for the use and sharing of data. To successfully implement digital twin technology in clinical care, it is crucial to gather data that accurately reflects the variety of diseases and the diversity of the population.

Early detection of cracks enables timely mitigation and maintenance actions, ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment within the open-pit coal mine. Monitoring open-pit coal mines and cracks is essential for the safety of workers and for saving national assets. Digital twins (DTs) can be crucial in open-pit coal mine crack detection. DTs enable continuous real-time monitoring of the open-pit mine, including its structures and surrounding environment. Various sensors and internet-of-things devices can be deployed to collect data on factors such as ground movement and strain. Integrating this data into the DT makes it possible to identify and analyze anomalous behavior or changes that may indicate crack formation or propagation. Deep learning-based networks are a crucial factor in detecting open-pit coal mine cracks. In this work, we propose a deep learning-based densely connected lightweight network incorporated into the DT-based framework for detecting cracks and taking predictive maintenance-based decisions by combining historical data, real-time sensor data, and predictive models. The proposed DT-based framework provides insights into the potential crack formation, allowing for proactive maintenance and mitigation measures. We compare the performance of our proposed network on different evaluation measures such as precision, recall, overall accuracy, mean average precision, F1-score, and kappa coefficient, where our proposed lightweight multiscale feature fusion-based network outperformed all other state-of-the-art deep neural networks. We also achieved the best performance on mean average precision by surpassing all other models. Additionally, we also compared the performance of our proposed network with U-Net and recurrent neural network on model training and prediction time benchmarks by outperforming those cutting-edge models.

Personalised medicine and the development of a virtual human or a digital twin comprises visions of the future of medicine. To realise these innovations, an understanding of the biology and physiology of all people are required if we wish to apply these technologies at a population level. Sex differences in health and biology is one aspect that has frequently been overlooked, with young white males being seen as the "average" human being. This has not been helped by the lack of inclusion of female cells and animals in biomedical research and preclinical studies or the historic exclusion, and still low in proportion, of women in clinical trials. However, there are many known differences in health between the sexes across all scales of biology which can manifest in differences in susceptibility to diseases, symptoms in a given disease, and outcomes to a given treatment. Neglecting these important differences in the development of any health technologies could lead to adverse outcomes for both males and females. Here we highlight just some of the sex differences in the cardio-respiratory systems with the goal of raising awareness that these differences exist. We discuss modelling studies that have considered sex differences and touch on how and when to create sex-specific models. Scientific studies should ensure sex differences are included right from the study planning phase and results reported using sex as a biological variable. This is a perspective that presents a viewpoint on immersive informal learning applications built as digital twins of the natural world. Such applications provide multimodal, interactive, immersive, embodied, and sensory experiences unique and different from typical game art environments because they are geospatial visualizations of data and information derived from ecological field plot studies, geographical information systems, drone images, and botanically correct 3D plant models visualized in real-time interactive game engines. Since they are constructed from geometric objects, they can programmatically self-express semantic data and connect to knowledge stores on the Internet to create a web of knowledge for both exploration of a virtual environment as a natural landscape and for exploration of connected knowledge stores for informal learning at the moment of curiosity. This design is exceptionally powerful for informal learning as it supports the innate human desire to understand the world. This paper summarizes the construction methods used for creating three digital twins of natural environments and the informal learning applications created and distributed, namely, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and virtual field trips. Informal learning outcomes and emotional reactions are evaluated using mixed-methods research studies to understand the impact of design factors. Visual fidelity and navigational freedom are combined to increase learning outcomes and many effective and emotional outcomes as well. Access to facts and story increase learning outcomes, and applications evaluated as beautiful are correlated with emotional reactions of awe and wonder, and awe and wonder are correlated with higher learning gains. Beauty is correlated with other system-wide subjective evaluations largely accepted as important to create a context conducive to support learning outcomes, such as calmness, excitement, and curiosity, a desire to share, and a desire to create. Science faces challenges in developing much-needed precision mental health treatments to accurately identify and diagnose mental health problems and the optimal treatment for each individual. Digital twins (DTs) promise to revolutionize the field of mental health, as they are doing in other fields of science, including oncology and cardiology, where they have been successfully deployed. The use of DTs in mental health is yet to be explored. In this Perspective, we lay the conceptual foundations for mental health DTs (MHDT). An MHDT is a virtual representation of an individual's mental states and processes. It is continually updated from data collected over the lifespan of the individual, and guides mental health professionals in diagnosing and treating patients based on mechanistic models and statistical and machine learning tools. The merits of MHDT are demonstrated through the example of the working alliance between the therapist and the patient, which is one of the most consistent mechanisms predicting treatment outcome. Combined with simulation software packages, City Information Models allow analysts and decision-makers to explore ‘what-if?’ questions and scenarios for various engineering and strategic applications. In this context, crowd and traffic simulations are most commonly utilized. Urban intelligent traffic management and pedestrian flow analysis greatly benefits from the latest generation of 3D City Information Models created from accurate urban-scale geospatial information. Analysis and simulation tools based on geometric, semantic, morphological, and structural information at the urban scale level offer the scientific foundation for all the activities required for identifying, detecting, planning, training, and analyzing vulnerability that may threaten human lives in urban environments. Nevertheless, the literature research showed that samples of operational Digital Twins incorporating simulation capabilities are impracticable for small municipalities and rural, low-income communities due to their complex infrastructure, hardware, and data requirements. It is desirable to reduce the requirements for these Digital Twins and still be capable of running comprehensive and accurate simulations based on urban-scale geospatial information. This article proposes an innovative framework and workflow capable of generating an operational Digital Twin and its visualization in the form of a 3D model using a procedural approach. The Digital Twin is connected with the traffic simulation SUMO and the Game Engine Unity for visualization using the TraCI middleware. The middleware is extended with additional functionalities and acts as an authoring tool. Unity allows visualizations in VR. The entire framework can be run on a single, standalone computer and is ready in a matter of minutes. The proposed framework for integrating modeling, simulation, and visualization of operational Digital Twins can help guide better decision-making for both rural areas as well as cities. To ensure safe and efficient operation, operators in process industries have to make timely decisions based on time-varying information. A holistic assessment of operators’ performance is, therefore, challenging. Current approaches to operator performance assessment are subjective and ignore operators’ cognitive behavior. In addition, these cannot be used to predict operators’ expected responses during novel situations that may arise during plant operations. The present study seeks to develop a human digital twin (HDT) that can simulate a control room operator’s behavior, even during various abnormal situations. The HDT has been developed using the ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) cognitive architecture. It mimics a human operator as they monitor the process and intervene during abnormal situations. We conducted 426 trials to test the HDT’s ability to handle disturbance rejection tasks. In these simulations, we varied the reward and penalty parameters to provide feedback to the HDT. We validated the HDT using the eye gaze behavior of 10 human subjects who completed 110 similar disturbance rejection tasks as that of the HDT. The results indicate that the HDT exhibits similar gaze behaviors as the human subjects, even when dealing with abnormal situations. These indicate that the HDT’s cognitive capabilities are comparable to those of human operators. As possible applications, the proposed HDT can be used to generate a large database of human behavior during abnormalities which can then be used to spot and rectify flaws in novice operator’s mental models. Digital twins (DTs) and eXtended Reality (XR) are two core technological enablers for engineering in the Metaverse that can accelerate the human-centric Industry 5.0 transformation. The digital twin technology provides a digital representation of a physical asset with data linkages for inspection, monitoring, and prediction of complex processes or systems, while eXtended reality offers real-and-virtual combined environments for human users to interact with machines. However, the synergies between digital twins and eXtended reality remain understudied. This work addresses this research gap by introducing a novel method “TwinXR” that leverages ontology-based descriptions of Digital twins, i.e., digital twin documents, in industrial eXtended reality applications. To ease the use of the TwinXR method, we publish a Unity package that allows data flow and conversion between eXtended reality applications and digital twin documents on the server. Finally, the work applies the TwinXR method in two industrial eXtended reality applications involving overhead cranes and a robot arm to demonstrate the use and indicate the validity of the method. We conclude that the TwinXR method is a promising way to advance the synergies between digital twins and eXtended reality: For eXtended reality, TwinXR enables efficient and scalable eXtended reality development; For digital twins, TwinXR unlocks and demonstrates the potential of digital twins for data interchange and system interoperation. “Digital Commons” explores the intersection between participatory design, digital gamification, and community engagement, contextualised in the planning of high-density housing estates in Hong Kong. The research project investigates how digital gamified participatory design can be applied in decision-making processes for the planning of public facilities in high-density housing estates. Focusing on community engagement methods, the project has engaged with residents of a case study housing estate, Jat Min Chuen in the Shatin Wai area of Hong Kong, to facilitate collective planning discussions about the past, present, and future of community facilities. Using a digital community game approach, it has collected opinions and needs from public housing residents, promoted collaborative design thinking processes, and provided a platform for participants to increase their understanding of the complexity of planning problems through 3D visualisation tools. The experiences documented in this study demonstrate how 3D interactivity, real-time engagement, and bottom-up perspectives may enhance the potential of using immersive digital twins during collective decision-making. The gaming outcomes show a high similarity across all teams in close relationship to users’ daily life routines, demonstrating a new powerful role for urban designers as a coordinator of interactive and collaborative planning processes. The Machine learning (ML) revolution is becoming established in oceanographic research, but its applications to emulate marine biogeochemical models are still rare. We pioneer a novel application of machine learning to emulate a highly complex physical-biogeochemical model to predict marine oxygen in the shelf-sea environment. The emulators are developed with intention of supporting future digital twins for two key stakeholder applications: (i) prediction of hypoxia for aquaculture and fisheries, (ii) extrapolation of oxygen from marine observations. We identify the key drivers behind oxygen concentrations and determine the constrains on observational data for a skilled prediction of marine oxygen across the whole water column. Through this we demonstrate that ML models can be very useful in informing observation measurement arrays. We compare the performance of multiple different ML models, discuss the benefits of the used approaches and identify outstanding issues, such as limitations imposed by the spatio-temporal resolution of the training/validation data.

Bridge infrastructure has great economic, social, and cultural value. Nevertheless, many of the infrastructural assets are in poor conservation condition as has been recently evidenced by the collapse of several bridges worldwide. The objective of this systematic review is to collect and synthesize state-of-the-art knowledge and information about how bridge information modeling, finite element modeling, and bridge health monitoring are combined and used in the creation of digital twins (DT) of bridges, and how these models could generate damage scenarios to be used by anomaly detection algorithms for damage detection on bridges, especially in bridges with cultural heritage value. A total of 76 relevant studies from 2017 up to 2022 have been taken into account in this review. The synthesis results show a consensus toward the future adoption of DT for bridge design, management, and operation among the scientific community and bridge practitioners. The main gaps identified are related to the lack of software interoperability, the required improvement of the performance of anomaly-detection algorithms, and the approach definition to be adopted for the integration of DT at the macro scale. Other potential developments are related to the implementation of Industry 5.0 concepts and ideas within DT frameworks.

Mathematical modeling has been fundamental to achieving near real-time accurate forecasts of the spread of COVID-19. Similarly, the design of non-pharmaceutical interventions has played a key role in the application of policies to contain the spread. However, there is less work done regarding quantitative approaches to characterize the impact of each intervention, which can greatly vary depending on the culture, region, and specific circumstances of the population under consideration. In this work, we develop a high-resolution, data-driven agent-based model of the spread of COVID-19 among the population in five Spanish cities. These populations synthesize multiple data sources that summarize the main interaction environments leading to potential contacts. We simulate the spreading of COVID-19 in these cities and study the effect of several non-pharmaceutical interventions. We illustrate the potential of our approach through a case study and derive the impact of the most relevant interventions through scenarios where they are suppressed. Our framework constitutes a first tool to simulate different intervention scenarios for decision-making.

Science faces challenges in developing much-needed precision mental health treatments to accurately identify and diagnose mental health problems and the optimal treatment for each individual. Digital twins (DTs) promise to revolutionize the field of mental health, as they are doing in other fields of science, including oncology and cardiology, where they have been successfully deployed. The use of DTs in mental health is yet to be explored. In this Perspective, we lay the conceptual foundations for mental health DTs (MHDT). An MHDT is a virtual representation of an individual’s mental states and processes. It is continually updated from data collected over the lifespan of the individual, and guides mental health professionals in diagnosing and treating patients based on mechanistic models and statistical and machine learning tools. The merits of MHDT are demonstrated through the example of the working alliance between the therapist and the patient, which is one of the most consistent mechanisms predicting treatment outcome.

Abstract: The development of electronics and software has resulted in the ability of twin agents to act as digital counterparts for the optimization, control, and monitoring of real power grids. When increasing regulation resources are connected to the power grid, is challenging for independent system operators to use a centralized controller to achieve power tracking and balance. Therefore, the present study applied device-level-based digital twins to monitor physical signals for computer-aided design for power tracking. Moreover, a consensus control-based distributed power tracking system is proposed for the physical-model simulation of the power grid. A communication network was also designed for realistic signal exchange. The combination of the proposed distributed power tracking method and communication network can accelerate computational efficiency and protect the privacy of the regulation resources. Finally, the performance of the proposed distributed power tracking method is validated in a simulation system with 10 regulation resources.
