Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) with well-designed porous structure has the potential to be great electrode materials in sodium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and abundant resource, however, hindered by its intrinsic low conductivity and stability. Herein, MoS2 with 3D macroporous foam structure and high conductivity was obtained through SiO2 templates and integrated with carbon paper (3D F-MoS2/CP). It has showed superior specific capacity (225 mA h g−1, 0.4–3 V) and cycling stability (1000 cycles) at high rate (2000 mA g−1), with a low decay rate (0.033% per cycle) in sodium-ion batteries. The excellent electrochemical performance may originate from its unique integrated structure: 3D MoS2 macropores providing high surface area and abundant transfer channels while carbon paper enhancing the conductivity of MoS2 and avoiding unnecessary side reactions brought by binder addition.

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) technology featuring low-cost, high-efficiency and scalability has presented great advantages in micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) fabrication. However, the limited capacitance of LIG based MSCs is still hindering their further development. Herein, we introduce joule heating as a critical in-situ treatment merged with the assembly of laser-induced graphene paper based MSCs (LIGP-MSCs) toward capacitive enhancement. By increasing heating-treatment temperature from ∼20 to 500 °C, the number of nanopores in LIGP continuously increases, attributed to the gradual decomposition of amorphous carbon components. The resulting joule-heated LIGP (J-LIGP) with improved specific surface area (160.97–533.49 m2/g) and pore volume (0.179–0.553 cm3/g) as well as superhydrophilic surface is highly suitable to be employed as J-LIGP-MSCs microelectrodes. By investigating process dependent performance, the J-LIGP-MSCs heated at 500 °C for 60 min delivers a significantly improved specific areal capacitance (CA) of 13.71 mF/cm2 at 10 mV/s, which is approximately six-fold higher than that of unheated LIGP-MSCs. By further exploring and optimizing the process efficiency, J-LIGP-MSCs with a CA of 12.61 mF/cm2 has been achieved by 550 °C heating for only 5 min. Along with superior mechanical flexibility, cyclability and structural modularity, the proposed in-situ joule heating treatment is finally proved to be a universal approach for consistently enhancing the CA of LIG based MSCs processed under various chemical modifications.

Tremendous attention has been paid on high efficiency, readily available and stability of electrocatalysts. Herein, we ingenious report a one-step reaction strategy synthesis of CoFe/CP grown on three-dimensional (3D) nanoarray carbon paper (CP) containing non-precious metals for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with low-cost and unique hierarchical porous structure. This amorphous CoFe/CP hybrid exhibits commendable electrocatalytic performance in the OER process, requiring only overpotential of 278 mV to achieve 10 mAcm−2 in 1.0 M KOH solution and a lower Tafel slope of 49.12 mVdec-1. In addition, this sample shows a long-term durability even at 200 mAcm−2 without obvious decay, which attributes to peculiar multistage graded nano structure and the change of composition at the interface of CP. Therefore, the remarkable OER activity can provide a new strategy to construct potential candidates, which will replace the state-of-the-art precious metals for OER in the future.

Developing efficient and stable non-noble metal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for sustainable overall water-splitting is extremely desirable but still a great challenge. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to fabricate Co3O4–CoOOH heterostructure nanosheet arrays with oxygen vacancies grown on carbon paper (Co3O4–CoOOH/CP). Benefiting from the unique 3D architecture, large surface area, synergistic effects between Co3O4, CoOOH and oxygen vacancies, the obtained self-supporting Co3O4–CoOOH/CP presents excellent electrocatalytic OER activity (low overpotentials of 245 and 390 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2) and robust long-term stability in alkaline condition. The present strategy provides the opportunities for the future rational design and discovery of high-performance non-noble metal based electrocatalysts for advanced water oxidation and beyond.

Paper-based microfluidic devices based on electrowetting principle, more specifically electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD), have attracted increasing attention due to their powerful liquid handling capability as compared to continuous-flow paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) that use capillary effects to control liquids. Here, we demonstrate fabrication of paper-based EWOD devices using cellulose paper as substrate and paraffin wax as dielectric hydrophobic layer by a simple pressing treatment for the cellulose paper and melting or spray-coating of paraffin wax. We optimized the key fabrication parameters according to the surface morphology and hydrophobicity of the obtained wax film, including the pressing pressure, thermal annealing temperature and amount of paraffin wax. Moreover, the EWOD devices fabricated by the spray-coating method demonstrate larger contact angle changes but with smaller contact angle hysteresis under DC electric field when compared with the devices fabricated by the melting method. Our study opens up potential fabrication of hybrid paper-based microfluidic device combining advantages of continuous-flow and electrowetting using cellulose paper and paraffin wax.

The following review paper thoroughly enables the readers to emulate the flexural behavior and impact test method for textile reinforced cementitious composites (TRCCs). The flexural parameters of ECCs corresponding to type of fiber material, fiber volume fraction, fiber volume length and strength parameters were discussed. For the textile reinforcement, the parameters like type of weaving pattern, mesh size, roving tex, fiber volume fraction and number of layers were discussed. Based on the tensile strength of textile fiber material, carbon, AR-glass, aramid and basalt fiber mesh were used for strengthening, repair works, plastering and reinforcement for thin elements. And also, the impact test performance on cementitious concrete composites is addressed as well as methods adopted for finding impact performance are discussed from the numerous literatures. This paper provides summary about the flexural and impact performance of textile fibers introduced into the concrete composites in different mesh sizes and fiber volume fractions. Generally, inclusion of textile fibers gives much more performance in tensile, toughness, flexural, energy absorption capacity and ductility in ECC composites. Many of the researchers have tried with different fiber materials for producing ECC and TRC composites separately, but only few of them used both have been discussed. Finally, from the literatures mostly artificial fibers are used for making textile reinforced composites.

Supercapacitors are favored by researchers because of their high power density, especially with the acceleration of people's life rhythm. However, their energy density, especially from the point of view of the whole energy storage device, is far lower than that of commercial batteries. In this work, a kind of customizable full paper-based supercapacitor device with excellent self-healing ability is fabricated by simple and low-cost screen printing, electropolymerization and dip coating methods. The resultant separator-free supercapacitor device exhibits both ultrahigh gravimetric and areal specific energy (power) densities of 39 Wh kg−1 (69 kW kg−1) and 692 μWh cm−2 (236 mW cm−2), achieving excellent supercapacitor performance. Notably, the addition of vitrimers endows the whole device with outstanding self-healing properties, which is helpful for enhancing the adaptability of the device to the environment. In addition, this kind of paper-based device also displays good photothermal and electromagnetic shielding performances. These striking features make paper matrix composites attractive in the fields of supercapacitors, medical photothermal treatment and electromagnetic shielding.

Photonic crystals film that possesses periodic dielectric structure have shown great prospect in developing environmentally friendly paper alternatives due to the unique properties of dye free and non-photobleaching, but their practical application is limited by the weak interaction between colloidal particles. Although some progress has been obtained, it is still a challenge to develop photonic paper with the desired mechanical and optical properties. Herein, multifunctional hard core/soft shell nanoparticles with controlled size are fabricated by semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization method. Compared with convention colloidal particles, these core/shell nanoparticles can facile self-assemble into large-scale dense ordered structure film via dried at room temperature due to the relatively low glass transition temperature (Tg) of the shell layers. The facile fabrication route enables the continuous high-through put production of the photonic papers. The as-formed papers not only possess the capacity to solvent (water/ethanol) rewritable and multicolor painting, but also can rapidly reversible mechanochromic. Moreover, due to the good compatibility of core/shell interface, these photonic films possess excellent mechanical properties, demonstrating that this multifunctional film makes the fabrication of novel robust rewritable papers possible and enables visual monitoring of deformation degree.

The use of membranes in integrated water systems has garnered increasing attention in paper mills operating with virgin fibres, with documented closed water loops in industry. However, limited research exists on the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) in mills operating with 100% recycled fibres (RCF) and closed water systems, as these result in the introduction and accumulation of insoluble contaminants in the effluent. This study investigated the effect of transmembrane pressure (TMP) and feed organic load on the flux, types of fouling, and organic separation with UF membranes in a recycled paper mill using 100% RCF. The high feed organic load caused inevitable fouling, limiting the highest achievable flux. However, the TMP could be manipulated to improve on or exacerbate the process performance, within the range that was set as a result of the feed's characteristics. Low TMP (1.35 bar) generated the highest permeability and chemical oxygen demand removal, while higher TMPs produced higher fluxes and recoveries. The process was characterised by high initial fluxes, followed by cake formation, which dominated, and pore blockage. The excess cake formation induced cake filtration. This study shows the potential of UF membranes to be used as pre-treatment in filtering the process water in a recycled paper mill operating with 100% RCF, a critical step forward in implementing an integrated water system, and eventually closing the water loop.

Gas diffusion layer is one of the most important components of fuel cell, which supports the catalytic layer, collects the current and facilitates mass transfer. However, current carbon paper is mainly composed of long carbon fibers (CF), which brings drawbacks including rough surface, poor body homogeneity, excessive thickness, and preparation difficulty, etc. In this research, we invent a combination method to produce a highly flat, highly homogeneous, ultra-thin and high-performance carbon paper for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The method combines the advantages of two materials, i.e. few-walled carbon nanotube (FWCNT) with high flatness and short CF with high porosity. And the combination method only contains three steps, material dispersion, carbon paper formation and heat treatment. The highest temperature for the heat treatment process is only 350 °C, which is much lower than the traditional 2000 °C. L -dopa is a chiral drug that has been extensively used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The concentration of L -dopa plays a vital role in the treatment, and this work emphasizes on designing a versatile platform for the quantitative and selective detection of L -dopa using reduced graphene quantum dot (rGQD). The platform is efficient in three different sensing methods, viz. fluorescence turn-on, filter paper-based sensing, and electronic measurements. The rGQD undergoes a dramatic fluorescence turn-on in the presence of L -dopa in aqueous media and artificial urine with a detection limit as low as 1.307 µM and 1.217 µM respectively. Experimental evidence revealed that the fluorescence enhancement is attributed to aggregation-induced emission mechanism. The system is also applicable for visual detection of L -dopa using filter paper strips treated with rGQD and develops bright fluorescence under ultra-violet irradiation. Apart from this, electrical sensors for L -dopa were also developed by preparing rGQD treated poly-vinyl alcohol films, and the increase in the current conduction with varying concentrations of L -dopa was observed. The films produce 2.5 order higher current conduction at 300 μM of L -dopa with a detection limit of about 13.136 µM. At the final stage, we have designed flexible electronic devices using these materials that develop 1.3 order higher current for L -dopa. The devices exhibit excellent air stability under varied relative humidity conditions as well as high bending stability for potential practical applications.

Multi-mode liquid handling system integrated different types of liquid behaviors on super-wetting surfaces has attracted great interest from both academia and industries due to their promising applications in the field of surface science. Herein, a paper-based dual-mode droplet manipulation system that combines oil/water separation and time-delay droplet switch was designed by spray-coating α-cellulose 10-undecenoyl ester (CUE) particles on filter paper with further “reverse sizing” by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based on capillary action and “like dissolve like” principle. Such novel binding technique leaded to a remarkably robust superhydrophobicity of the as-fabricated PDMS@CUE-coated paper (PDMS@CCP), including outstanding mechanical resistance and environmental durability. In particular, the front side of PDMS@CCP displayed excellent separation efficiency (higher than 99.89%) for light oil/water mixture, heavy oil/water mixture, and even surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion. Interestingly, based on the hydrophobicity of the back side of PDMS@CCP and the intrinsic hygroscopicity of paper itself, a time-delay droplet switch was simply achieved in between by the Laplace pressure derived from the curvature difference of the droplet on two paper surfaces with surface energy gradient. By adjusting the width of the filter paper and the volume of the droplet, the switch time could be rationally modulated between 0.8 and 202.1 s. The designed functional paper would enrich the application field of the liquid manipulation system.

Highlights •Mechanical stimuli-triggered optical responses of cholesteric liquid crystal devices are realized.•Self-powered bistable smart window and E-paper are demonstrated.•Self-powered optical switch is developed for remote control.Intelligent responsive devices are crucial for a variety of applications ranging from smart electronics to robotics. Electro-responsive cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) have been widely applied in display panels, smart windows, and so on. In this work, we realize the mechanical stimuli-triggered optical responses of the CLC by integrating it with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which converts the mechanical motion into alternating current electricity and then tunes the different optical responses of the CLC. When the voltage applied on the CLC is relatively low (15–40 V), the TENG drives the switching between the bistable planar state and focal conic state of the CLC, which shows potential applications in self-powered smart windows or E-paper displays. When the voltage supplied by the TENG is larger than 60 V, a self-powered optical switch is demonstrated by utilizing the transformation between focal conic state and instantons homeotropic state of the CLC. This triboelectric-optical responsive device consumes no extra electric power and suggests a great potential for future smart electronics.

Background We use inkjet printing and film adhesion methods to economically develop paper-based electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) mixing device. Because the periodic shrinking and stretching of droplet contact line induces surface capillary wave, the coalesced droplet on EWOD device vibrates to accelerate solute mixing on the merged spot. Methods An office inkjet printer fabricates pads of conducting silver nanoparticles to compose EWOD activation electrodes on a piece of glossy label paper, covered with one oil-coated dielectric film. Using the triggering relays of each pad, two droplets of thirty microliter individually loaded on the electrode ends are driven to coalesce. Alloy nanorod-catalyzed chemiluminescence assay can be performed on this mixing device. Findings When ac voltage of 100 Hz is applied on the electrode flakes, compared with solute transport efficiency in static condition, solute diffusivity is enhanced by 4 times using this mixing device. Linear relation (R2 = 0.99) between luminescence intensity acquired with smartphone camera and luminol concentration of aforementioned chemiluminescence assay is obtained, demonstrating reproducibility improvement for accurate determination.

Demand on the quick screening of gastric cancer (GC) has significantly stimulated the development of biomarker sensing techniques. Herein, we report the novel fluorescent paper-based analytical devices (PADs) for detections of GC-related microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) and circular RNA from Hippocampus Abundant Transcript 1 gene (circRNA-HIAT1) with prominent reliability and sensitivity. The PADs, constructed by in-situ synthesis of blue-emissive carbon dots (CDs) and conjugations of probe DNAs, exhibit the superior uniformity and stability. In the presence of targets, rolling circle amplifications (RCA) are triggered to generate long DNA strands for the assemblies of green-/red-emissive labels. Consequently, remarkable blue-to-green and blue-to-red emission color transitions of the PADs are achieved, implementing the color-analysis of miRNA-21 and circRNA-HIAT1, respectively. Benefited from the efficient RCA, coupled with the drastic ratiometric fluorescent changes, the limit of detections (LODs) of PADs are found to be several fM with the upper limit of the linear detection range at 1 nM. More importantly, the fluorescent PADs possess excellent specificity, as well as anti-interference capability in biological settings, enabling their applications in accurate GC screening with plasma samples. Overall, the proposed fluorescent PADs are featured with robust sensing platform, facile signal readout, and exceptional dual-type RNA sensing performance, holding high potential in point-of-care testing (POCT).

l-dopa is a catecholamine neurotransmitter used to treat Parkinson's disease. This paper presents a low-cost paper-based biosensor aimed at enhancing the convenience of monitoring l-dopa concentrations. ZnO nanorods (ZnO-NRs) were synthesized on papers in less than 90 min using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The ZnO-NRs amplify green fluorescence signals to enhance the detection sensitivity of l-dopa, best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 475/537 nm. We systematically characterized the effect of reaction conditions on the corresponding fluorescence enhancements. The proposed ZnO NRs-paper biosensor presented a ∼3-fold increase in green fluorescence compared to unmodified papers. The linear range of detection for l-dopa was 25-2000 nM, with a limit of detection of 24 nM, which meets the clinical requirements for the monitoring of l-dopa in Parkinson's patients.

Flexible paper-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate has attracted great attention in the sensitive detection of analytes in recent years. However, due to its inherent hydrophilic surface, the nanoparticles will not be concentrated very well on the surface of the paper. This reduces the reproducibility and sensitivity of the paper-based substrate. Herein, we demonstrate flexible hydrophobic paper-based substrate using silver nanocubes loaded on polymethylhydrosiloxane modified filter paper (AgNCs@SiO2/PMHS modified filter paper) to realize high sensitivity and reproducibility. The hydrophobic filter paper was obtained by dip-soaking the filter paper into PMHS solution, resulting in increased contact angle to ~112.5°. The AgNCs@SiO2/PMHS modified paper substrate shows high analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 6.55 × 106, which is 2.2-fold enhancement compared to AgNCs@SiO2/normal paper substrate, and a low detection limit of 0.1 nM rhodamine 6G and 0.89 nM adenine. The high SERS enhancement factor and sensitivity is attributed to the high hotspots density created in the hydrophobic surface as a result of the excellent uniformity and superior sample collection efficiency compared to the normal filter paper-based substrate. Besides, the substrate shows excellent spot-to-spot and substrate-to-substrate reproducibility, with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 6.05% and 9.22%, respectively. Moreover, the AgNCs@SiO2/PMHS modified filter paper substrate achieved good stability; the Raman signal intensity only drops by 25.88% after 3 months of exposure to air. Therefore, this flexible hydrophobic AgNCs@SiO2/PMHS modified filter paper substrate with low cost fabrication and label-free SERS detection is a promising SERS platform for analytical and biological sensing applications.

Graphene-based papers have recently triggered considerable interests in developing the application as thermal interface materials (TIMs) for addressing the interfacial heat transfer issue, but their low through-plane thermal conductivity (κ⊥), resulting from the layer-by-layer stacked architecture, limits the direct use as TIMs. Although various hybrid graphene papers prepared by combining the graphene sheets and the thermally conductive insertions have been proposed to solve this problem, achieving a satisfactory κ⊥ higher than that of commercial TIMs (>5 W m−1 K−1) remains challenging. Here, a strategy aimed at the construction of heat pathways along the through-plane direction inside the graphene paper for achieving a high κ⊥ was demonstrated through the simultaneous filtration of graphene sheets with two different lateral sizes. The as-prepared graphene paper presented a hierarchical structure composed of loosely stacked horizontal layers formed by large graphene sheets, intercalated by a random arrangement of small graphene sheets. Due to the heat pathways formed by small graphene sheets along the through-plane direction, the hierarchically structured graphene paper exhibited an improved κ⊥ as high as 12.6 W m−1 K−1 after a common graphitization post-treatment. In the practical test, our proposed paper as an all-graphene TIM achieved an enhancement in cooling efficiency of ≈ 2.2 times compared to that of the state-of-the-art TIM, demonstrating its superior performance to meet the ever-increasing heat dissipation requirement.

Carbon cloth and carbon paper have unique characteristics such as conductivity, mechanical strength, porosity, reduced dimensions, and adjustable size and shape. With these materials, different simple modification strategies can be employed, with emphasis on the direct growth of metal-based catalysts through single-step hydrothermal methods. Thus, owing to these interesting features, highly efficient, versatile, and disposable electrochemical (bio)sensors based on carbon cloth and carbon paper have been designed for biomolecules, biomarkers, and hazardous and chemical compounds detection in clinical, environmental and food samples, as well as in industrial products. Moreover, the advantage of facile integration in miniaturized and portable devices, envisages their successful application in point-of-care diagnostics and in-situ measurements. Therefore, this review highlights the main advances and the current research gaps concerning the design of these novel electroanalytical tools.

Membrane heat exchangers were used for moisture and heat recovery from a hot and humid natural gas stream in indirect contact with an air stream. A plate membrane module with spiral channels on each side was designed to configure gas and air streams in co-current and counter-current flow. Two types of membranes, a commercial kraft paper, and a laboratory-made thin-film composite membrane, were used as the module core. The thermal efficiency and the water recovery from the humid gas were calculated and compared under different operating conditions. At a unit flow ratio of air/gas, the greatest effectiveness was achieved at a methane flow of 100 cm3/min, but water recovery increased at higher gas flows. For the counterflow configuration, an air/methane flow ratio of 2 was sufficient to achieve the highest total effectiveness and water recovery; however, larger air/gas ratios were beneficial to improve heat and moisture transfer for the co-current configuration. The highest water recovery by the kraft paper and composite membrane was achieved (approximately 15 mgH2O/cm2.h) for the input gas with the highest humidity. The dehumidification performance of kraft paper as a porous and hydrophilic membrane was slightly better than that of the composite membrane containing a dense hydrophilic polymer thin film in most cases. A relatively low heat transfer coefficient was found for the module, which was increased by using higher gas flow rates at higher humidity conditions.

Paper electronics have been fast developed in recent years due to their degradability and recyclability; however, most of them are barely equipped with logic functions, impeding them from becoming autonomous on-paper systems. To provide a working unit for logic implementations, a paper field-effect transistor (FET) with a clay-graphite channel that demonstrated negative differential resistance (NDR) is fabricated in this study. The device exhibited a p-type semiconductor characteristic with an optical bandgap of ∼1.97 eV according to photoluminescence analysis, resulting from considerable defective graphite mixed with clay in the channel. Considering that the NDR behavior is theoretically predicted to be tunable by the contact resistance, we fabricated FETs with different contact resistances and observed that the NDR behavior occurred in devices with relatively lower contact resistance. The NDR effect is also tunable by varying the gate voltage, which matches well with simulation results. The possible mechanism for the NDR behavior is the decrease in carrier drift velocity induced by band-to-band tunneling, associated with impurities-induced trapping states and gate-induced confined states. This work provides a promising and easy pathway to develop digital components using paper electronics in the near future.

CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) were incorporated into a filter paper to produce a paper-based colorimetric device for Hg2+ detection. Under visible light, the CdSe/ZnS QDs acted as a photocatalyst to oxidize TMB, resulting in blue colorization on the paper. Moreover, Hg2+ could enhance the photocatalytic activity of CdSe/ZnS QDs and consequently caused an increase in the color intensity of the paper. The color change of the paper-based device can be directly identified by naked-eye observation or captured by a smartphone and analyzed using image processing software for quantitative analysis. Under optimal conditions, a low detection limit of 0.09 µM was achieved. This device was applied for real samples, including tap water and cosmetics, and achieved satisfying results.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a powerful technique with the advantages of high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range. However, most of previous strategies based on ECL could only detect one analyte so that it is inevitable to investigate the selectivity and influences of interferences. Herein ECL integrated with paper chromatography was showed to be a potential platform for separation and detection of two environmental hormones (bisphenol A, BPA, and dibutyl phthalate, DBP). In our approach, carbon conductive tape was attached to an ITO glass and then modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and CdSe quantum dot (CdSe QDs) to fabricate the working electrodes for ECL detection. The synthesis of CdSe QDs was optimized based on their photoluminescence spectra and the ECL intensities. The modified electrode was then coupled in the paper-based analytical devices consisting of the filter paper modified with chitosan. Based on their quenching effect on the ECL emission of CdSe QDs, excellent linear relationships could be obtained between decreased ECL intensities and both the concentrations of DBP and BPA. Besides, DBP and BPA could be separated based on their retention time by tilting the filter paper for 30° and then detected with ECL. This study suggested that paper-based analytical devices could be potentially applied for separation and detection of multiple targets due to their ease of fabrication and convenient operation.

Low-cost, flexible and safe battery technology is the key to the widespread usage of wearable electronics, among which the aqueous Al ion battery with water-in-salt electrolyte is a promising candidate. In this work, a flexible aqueous Al ion battery is developed using cellulose paper as substrate. The water-in-salt electrolyte is stored inside the paper, while the electrodes are either printed or attached on the paper surface, leading to a lightweight and thin-film battery prototype. Currently, this battery can tolerate a charge and discharge rate as high as 4 A g−1 without losing its storage capacity. The charge voltage is around 2.2 V, while the discharge plateau of 1.6–1.8 V is among the highest in reported aqueous Al ion batteries, together with a high discharge specific capacity of ∼140 mA h g−1. However, due to the water electrolysis side reaction, the faradaic efficiency can only reach 85% with a cycle life of 250 due to the dry out of electrolyte. Benefited from using flexible materials and aqueous electrolyte, this paper-based Al ion battery can tolerate various deformations such as bending, rolling and even puncturing without losing its performance. When two single cells are connected in series, the battery pack can provide a charge voltage of 4.3 V and a discharge plateau as high as 3–3.6 V, which are very close to commercial Li ion batteries. Such a cheap, flexible and safe battery technology may be widely applied in low-cost and large-quantity applications, such as RFID tags, smart packages and wearable biosensors in the future.

Paper based humidity sensors are low-cost, flexible, and biodegradable. However, the previously reported paper based humidity sensors exhibit poor repeatability, low sensitivity, high drift, and slow response. Here, we reported a new strategy to monolithically fabricate humidity sensor based on porous paper (PPHS) using robust and precise screen and gravure printings. PPHS is highly sensitive, with the maximum 1480% change at 1 kHz and the maximum 411.4% change at 10 kHz in capacitance, respectively. PPHS is highly repeatable (a 1.05% standard derivation in sensitivity for 3 continuous runs) and is stable and insensitive to a mild temperature change (15-30 °C). PPHS rapidly responds (0.8 s) and recovers (0.78 s). PPHS is also highly foldable and twistable. The high repeatability, high sensitivity, quick response/recovery, high foldability/twistability, and good stability of PPHS could be attributable to the combined effects of the high specific surface area of porous paper and the robust and precise printings. By comparison, PPHS is more sensitive than the previously reported paper-based humidity sensors and several humidity sensors fabricated using different substrates, materials, and printings. Due to these unique features, PPHS shows great potential applications in the humidity sensing, the breath detection, the proximity detection, and non-touch switch.

A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (PAD) with both pre-concentration and parallel operation functions is of great promise for sensitive and high throughput detection. In this paper, a fast and multiplexed PAD was designed based on wax-screen-printing with glass fiber paper substrate and validated by image-based colorimetry. Driven by the same DC power supply, parallel electrokinetic stacking with the PAD of 8 channels can be completed within 2 minutes, and each channel can be loaded with different samples. Enrichment factor of 2 orders of magnitude was demonstrated with RSD below 2.5% between the chips and the channels of a chip. Reproducible and multiplexed stacking operations of this PAD provide a solid foundation for online calibration and sample detection on the same chip at the same time. Applications of this PAD was demonstrated by online colorimetric detection of food pigments from beverages and offline MS/MS detection of amino acids from a serum sample. Besides high-throughput and sensitive point-of-care test detection, this PAD method could also find applications for efficient pre-separation and pre-concentration of complex samples.

Under the dual pressure of energy consumption and environmental pollution, mankind hopes to develop clean and renewable alternative energy, and the rapid development of fuel cells meets people's demand for energy-efficient power systems. The emergence of portable micro energy systems represented by microfluidic fuel cells, such as paper-based microfluidic fuel cells, has greatly enriched the means of medical detection to better cope with the threat of disease transmission. In this work, the numerical simulation method is innovatively introduced to study the paper-based microfluidic fuel cells. Both transient and steady-state modes are employed to demonstrate the whole operation process of the paper-based microfluidic fuel cell. In addition, the different structural parameters, including electrode spacing, the distance between electrode and inlet, channel thickness, and electrode length, are also investigated their influence mechanisms on cell performance. Results show that the increase of most structural parameters decreases cell output power in different degrees. Even on the premise that increasing channel thickness has a positive impact on the output power, the fuel utilization still shows a downward trend. These conclusions provide theoretical support and reference for future optimization work and accelerate the development of microfluidic fuel cells.

The generated gas bubbles in microfluidic fuel cells (MFCs) cover the active surface area of the electrode and greatly limit the cell performance. In this study, a feasible approach is proposed to effectively accelerate bubbles removal and enhance cell performance by embedding a paper separator in the middle of the microchannel. Visualization of bubble behaviors and the corresponding electrochemical measurements are performed to investigate the effect of bubbles on the cell performance. Periodical process of the bubble growth and removal leads to the fluctuation in the current density of the MFC. The rapid gas removal and the low ohmic resistance are observed after embedding a layer of filter paper in the microchannel, causing improved fuel transfer and smaller ohmic loss. Although the current density fluctuates more frequently, the fluctuation amplitude decreases and the cell performance is enhanced. Compared with the MFC without paper separator, the maximum power density and the limiting current density of the MFC with paper separator is increased by 25.2% and 130%, respectively. Moreover, the cell performance is improved with increasing the flow rate of reactant solution and the peak power density achieves 25.9 mW cm−2 under flow rate of 1500 μL min−1.

Existing microfluidic technologies for blood tests have several limitations, including difficulties in integrating the sample preparation steps, such as blood dilution, and precise metering of tiny samples (microliter) for accurate downstream analyses on a chip. Digital microfluidics (DMF) is a liquid manipulation technique that can provide precise volume control of micro or nano-liter liquid droplets. Without using sensitive but complex detection methods for tiny droplets involving fluorescence, luminescence, and electrochemistry, this article presents a DMF device with embedded paper-based sensors to detect blood lithium-ion (Li+) concentration by colorimetry. Dielectrophoresis on the DMF device between two parallel planar electrodes separates plasma droplets (from tens to hundreds of nanoliters in volume) from undiluted whole blood (a few microliters) within 4 min with an efficiency exceeding 90%. The embedded paper sensors contain a detection reagent to absorb the DMF-transported plasma droplets. These droplets change the color of the paper sensors in accordance with the Li+ concentration. Subsequently, colorimetry is used to reveal the Li+ concentration via image analysis. The proposed method meets the detection-sensitivity requirement for clinical diagnosis of bipolar disorder, making the DMF device a potential therapeutic tool for rapid whole-blood Li+ detection.

Optically transparent fibroin nanofiber (FNF) paper was obtained without using binders by passing a fibroin suspension through a mechanical nanofibrillation process using a water-jet. The optical transmittance of the nanofiber paper increased with the number of passes through the water-jet and reached 79.3% and 80.3% of light at 600 nm after 15 and 30 passes, respectively. The fibroin of the transparent nanopaper remained fibrous with a native β-sheet secondary structure. Therefore, the transparent nanopaper showed a high elastic modulus, high thermal durability, and low thermal expansion. This novel protein material, which can be fabricated without toxic chemicals or organic solvents, is bio-friendly and shows promise for new applications in biocompatible photonic devices.

In the present era of the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor networks, clean and sustainable power sources are in huge demand, and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are a hot cake in green energy production. Here, we have developed a contact-separation mode TENG using liquid-phase exfoliated 2D-hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) coated on biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) and paper as counter triboelectric materials, which showed an impressive 70 times higher power output than simple BoPET-paper TENG assembly. Even under a moderate finger tapping force (~3 N), the developed BNNSs/BoPET-paper TENG device could generate an open circuit output voltage of ~200 V and a short circuit current density of ∼0.48 mA/m2. While under load testing, the peak value of electric power density for the BNNSs/BoPET-paper TENG device reached ~0.14 W/m2 at 200 MΩ resistive load. The incorporation of BNNSs has significantly enhanced the electron-accepting capabilities of the BoPET film which is evident from the enhanced dielectric permittivity of the BNNSs/BoPET assembly, and thus resulted in the enhanced electrical output of TENG. Additionally, the fabricated BNNSs-TENG was successfully demonstrated for powering electronic gadgets such as LCD clock, digital thermometer, and LEDs through cyclic finger tapping force.

Hard carbon (HC) is praised as the state-of-the-art anode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, developing HC anode with both ultra-high initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and superb rate performance is still one of the most critical challenges in practical application. Herein, the renewable filter papers were directly converted into a series of free-standing and flexible microfiber carbon papers (MFCPs) as practical additive-free anode for SIBs, adopting a simple graphite plate-assisted pyrolysis tactics. In ether electrolyte, the obtained MFCPs (at pyrolysis temperature > 1100 ℃) achieve an ICE>95%, one of the top values in the HC ranking list. Excitingly, the practical powers of MFCPs also reflect in the greater superior rate capability (251.2 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1) compared to traditional materials and excellent cycle life (217.3 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g−1). Moreover, when assorted with an O3-Na(NiFeMn)1/3O2 cathode, the pouch full cell delivers a splendid energy density of 246 Wh kg−1 with superb cycle life. Importantly, mechanism analysis reveals that three-stage storage sodium behavior of MFCPs: adsorption, intercalation and filling. Interestingly, sodium ions in ether electrolyte insert the interlayer as naked Na+ form instead of solvated Na+, revealing high ICE and rate-capability depends on pseudo-graphitic structures with high-level ordered degree. This work provides an extensible practical HC anode and insights in the sodium storage mechanism of HC in ether electrolyte..

For the important applications of gas identification related to specific diseases in healthcare, flexible gas sensors have attracted more attention. Among them, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have been known as good promising flexible gas-sensitive materials. While how to tightly attach 2D materials on flexible substrates is still challenging. Here, we propose an enhanced room-temperature flexible paper-substrate sensors based on 2D tungsten disulfide (WS2) with S defects, which are facilely synthesized by chemical exfoliation and vacuum filtration method. Structure characterization shows that most of the as-prepared 2D WS2 are within 3 layers. Spectroscopic characterization proves the existence of S defects on the surface of 2D WS2 produced by chemical exfoliation. The room-temperature (25 °C) NH3 gas sensitivity results show that the response intensity of 2D WS2 with rich S defects is nearly three times higher than the highly crystalline 2D WS2. The results of the flexible gas sensitivity indicate the fast response and high stability of our devices in breathing detection and bending experiments. Furthermore, the devices can effectively distinguish bending stress changes and gas-sensitive response signals at the same time, realizing multifunctional sensing detection. Our work will be a reference for fabricating flexible sensors based on 2D materials.

Paper-based battery is a low-cost, lightweight, flexible and environmentally-friendly technology for small-power and flexible electronics, which can be conveniently fabricated by printing. In this work, we propose an innovative paper-based hybrid battery using Zn foil as anode and Ag grid-supported oxygen catalyst as cathode. Benefited from its composite cathode, this hybrid battery can work in both primary Zn-air mode and secondary Zn-Ag mode in different mission profiles. When working as a primary battery, the Zn anode is oxidized and the ambient air is reduced by the oxygen catalyst inside cathode, producing an OCV of 1.5 V and a peak power density of 17.8 mW cm−2. When working as a secondary battery, the Zn anode is reduced and oxidized periodically while the Ag grid inside cathode is oxidized and reduced accordingly. The charge and discharge voltage plateaus are closely around 1.6 V, leading to an excellent energy efficiency of 95.2%. Moreover, this hybrid battery can switch its working modes smoothly without performance loss, and the battery flexibility is proved to be high in both working modes. In summary, this paper-based Zn-air/Ag hybrid battery is especially suitable for powering flexible electronics in both long-term discharge missions and multi-cycle rechargeable tasks.

To develop functional honeycomb plates (HPs) with great thermal performance, This paper uses a heat flow meter to determine the equivalent thermal conductivity λ E of honeycomb plates (HPs) positioned horizontally under cold-above/hot-below conditions and combined with theoretical calculations, the influence mechanism of their geometric parameters on their heat transfer performance were investigated with different thicknesses h and cell wall lengths of 8 mm and 16 mm (HP8 and HP16, respectively). The results show that the thermal insulation performance of HPs with different cell side lengths varies with the plate thickness. HP8 presented a better thermal insulation performance when h = 40–60 mm. Based on this, the concepts of matching honeycomb structure and matching convection and the suggestions that according to the needs of a project, HP8 or HP16 can be reasonably selected, and the stacking of two kinds of plates can be optimized were first proposed. And it can be obtained that if the experimental λ E results of a HP are applied to a beetle elytron plate with the same thickness and honeycomb structure size, the heat insulation of the beetle elytron plate (BEP) would be superior to that of the HP. This paper lays a theoretical foundation for the research and development of multifunctional BEPs with heat insulation properties was verified. Finally, the internal influence mechanism of the difference in temperature distribution on the upper and lower surfaces and the three-dimensional size of the honeycomb cells on the matching honeycomb structure and matching convection.

To explore the application of environmental protection material-paper straw board in cold-formed thin-walled steel (CFS) structures and further develop the sheathing system, an innovative CFS framing wall sheathed by paper straw board (CFSSB) is proposed. Eight CFSSB composite wall specimens and one CFS frame without sheathing were tested under monotonic and reversed cyclic horizontal loads to study the shear performance of the CFSSB composite wall. Also, the shear performance of the wall specimens can be obtained. The key parameters include the value of the vertical load and the form of the CFS frame in this experimental program. By analyzing the specimen’s failure forms and failure process, the characteristic values of the bearing capacity, lateral stiffness, ductility coefficient and energy dissipation coefficient are obtained. The results show that the existence of paper straw board and adding diagonal braces to the CFS frame can significantly improve the shear capacity of CFSSB composite walls. The favorable seismic performance of the CFSSB composite wall was demonstrated in the experiment. In addition, a finite element model for CFSSB composite wall is developed using the software package ANSYS. The finite element analysis (FEA) results show a good agreement with the experiment results in terms of failure modes and skeleton curves, which verify the feasibility of the FEA model. Furthermore, extensive parametric analysis was carried out to analyze the factors affecting the shear capacity of the CFSSB composite wall. The FEA results show that the spacing of studs and self-tapping screws greatly influences the shear capacity of walls. Moreover, based on the failure of the screw connections, a formula for calculating the shear capacity of the CFSSB composite wall is proposed. The results of the formula calculation show good agreement with the experiment and FEA results, and it can provide a reference for engineering design.

Rational design of photoelectrode architectures is deemed as an effective solution to enhance efficiency of photoelectrochemical water splitting for conquering increasingly prominent environmental problems. Herein, a programmable flexible photoanode with built-in tandem Z-scheme configuration fabricated by in-situ growth of MoSe2-CdS-ZnO array with ultrathin nanosheet-interlaced-nanorod structure on the Au paper electrode, is firstly reported. By taking advantages of the interwoven nanonetwork structure, high conductivity as well as larger porosity of the as-fabricated Au paper electrode, a stable light-harvesting paper chip with fast transfer/separate mediators of the charge/carriers is thus integrated. By virtue of double internal electric fields (IEFs) and photothermal effect, the developed MoSe2-CdS-ZnO photoanode exhibits incident-photon-to-current efficiency of 52 % under 460 nm of light irradiation, and the current density reaches 2.4 mA cm−2 at 0.3 V versus normal hydrogen electrode, which is comparable with respect to current state-of-the-art “type-II-scheme”, “surface-scheme”, and cocatalyst-free photocatalysts (0.03–2.4 mA cm−2). Consequently, the paper-based photoanode achieves admirable photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen generation property (39.7 μmol cm−2 h-1). The synergistic effect of tailorable tandem Z-scheme configuration with double IEFs and delineating of 3D cross-linked network structure of the proposed photoanode in this work may open an avenue for constructing high-performance photoelectrochemical water splitting devices.

We preliminarily examined whether it is possible to visualize synthetic materials applied to the surface of a base material by using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging at wavelengths of 1.0–2.35 µm. We focused on the applicability of this method for visualizing adhesives and varnishes, assessing the effect of underlying colorants on measurements, and selecting the optimal method for data analysis. Experimental samples were adhesive on a painted ceramic plate and varnish on printed paper. We performed correlation analysis, partial least squares regression analysis, linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, KNN and principal component scores 1 and 2 to evaluate the measurement data. The conventional method (visible/near-infrared spectroscopic/fluorescence photographs at wavelengths of 400–1000 nm.) could not visualize the adhesive on the painted ceramic plate or the varnish on the printed paper, whereas the new method could do so. Therefore, this method has the potential to be useful for inspecting the distribution of synthetic materials on the surface of a base material.

The paper-based sensing devices have drawn a broad interest in analytical chemistry for colorimetric and fluorescent-based analysis of biological, environmental, clinical, and food samples. It is due to the simple, rapid, biodegradable, user-friendly, less expensive, and low waste generation into the environment. Here, the recent development of paper-based sensors fabricated with different noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and semiconductor and carbon quantum dots (QDs) is demonstrated to analyze several chemical substances from various samples. User-friendly and portable recording devices such as digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, etc. along with color detecting softwares are employed to measure the color intensity of nanomaterials fabricated paper devices after the deposition of a sample solution containing various chemical substances. The advantages and disadvantages of incorporating nanomaterials in the paper substrate (direct deposition, inkjet printing, screen printing and wax printing) are illustrated. The mechanism for colorimetric, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and chemiluminescence sensing using noble metal NPs (Ag, Cu, and Au), semiconductors, and carbon QDs for the determination of metal ions, anions, pesticides, biomolecules, and other toxic chemical substances are discussed. Thus, this review article would be highly useful for scientists and researchers to design colorimetric sensors to monitor chemical toxicants in clinical, environment, foods, and many other related samples.

The scalable and controllable preparation of carbon nanomaterial-based scaffolds with superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties in addition to being ultrathin, robust, lightweight, flexible, and foldable is a challenging task. However, commonly used techniques such as integrating conducting moieties and high-temperature annealing cannot simultaneously meet the demands of high specific shielding effectiveness (SSE), robustness, and flexibility. Here, we adopted a novel PDA reduction technique to integrate various functionalities, including a nitrogen doping source, extended reduction of GO, and a large accessible area to accommodate multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The prepared ultrathin PDA-rGO/CNT composite sheet exhibited a low density (0.26 g/cm3), high flexibility, and superior shielding effectiveness (SE) under a wide range of microwave frequencies (i.e., the X band and Ku band). The total shielding effectiveness (SET) reached 47.6 dB and 48.7 dB in the X band and Ku band, respectively, at a thickness of 82 µm and a high SSE; in particular, the SE/density reached a maximum value of 183.3 and 187.3 dB cm3/g, respectively, which are superior to those of previously reported studies. This comprehensive study revealed the synergistic effect of PDA doping and MWCNTs, resulting in excellent shielding properties. Hence, this superior SSE and flexibility makes ultrathin lightweight PDA-rGO/CNT composite sheets a suitable candidate for replacing metallic counterparts for foldable and wearable electronic components.

Exploring novel photoactive materials with high photoelectric conversion efficiency plays a crucial role in enhancing the analytical performance of paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor. SnO2, which possesses higher photostability and electron mobility, can be regarded as a promising photoactive material. Herein, paper-based one dimensional (1D) domed SnO2 nanotubes (NTs) have been developed with the template-consumption strategy. What’s more, their growth mechanism has also been proposed based on the controllable experiments. At first, the paper-based 1D ZnO nanorods (NRs) as the typical amphoteric oxide are prepared and serve as the sacrifice templates which can be etched by the generated alkaline environment during the formation of SnO2. At a certain stage, all the ZnO NRs can be completely etched by controlling the experimental conditions, resulting in the forming of vertically distributed hollow SnO2 NTs. Furthermore, the Sn self-doping strategy is also proposed to suppress the recombination of charge carriers and broaden the light response range by introducing the impurity energy levels. Profiting from such doping strategy, the prominent photocurrent signal is obtained compared with pure paper-based SnO2 NTs. Ultimately, an innovative visible light responsive paper-based Sn-doping SnO2-x NTs are developed and employed as the photoelectrode for the PEC biosensor using the alpha fetoprotein (AFP) as the model analyte. Under the optimal conditions, the ultrasensitive AFP sensing is realized with the linear range and detection limitation of 10 pg mL-1 to 200 ng mL-1 and 3.84 pg mL-1, respectively. This work provides a judiciously strategy for developing novel photoactive materials for paper-based PEC bioanalysis.

Nowadays, multi-functional systems driven by solar energy have been explored to alleviate the crisis of energy and freshwater scarcity. However, it remains a great challenge to integrate multi-functions into one hybrid system with a monolithic material, which can harvest, convert and store solar energy synergistically. Here, we firstly propose a multi-functional carbon nanotube paper, which starts from a material level to solve these problems. The carbon nanotube paper is fabricated by vacuum filtration. It exhibits high efficiency of solar-thermal conversion. Secondly, three types of energy conversion/storage systems (e.g., solar-thermal evaporation system, solar-thermoelectric generation system, and supercapacitor) are constructed based on the carbon nanotube paper, which extend the research to a device level. The solar-thermal evaporation system shows an evaporation rate of 1.28 kg m-2h−1 under simulated sunlight irradiation of 1 kW m−2. The solar-thermoelectric generation system demonstrates a stable electric power generation with an output voltage of 100 mV under light irradiation of 1 kW m−2. The supercapacitors perform the energy storage function with an areal specific capacitance of 19.6 mF cm−2. These devices and systems can be used in freshwater generation (0.84 kg m-2h−1, sunlight irradiation of 1 kW m−2), water purification/desalination (inorganic ions rejection larger than 99.9%) and portable solar charging system (maximum output voltage of 5 V). Finally, a hybrid energy system is innovatively proposed from the system level to simultaneously produce freshwater, generate and store electric power. Through the synergetic coupling of solar conversion and storage technologies, the hybrid energy system can supply sustainable freshwater and electricity for remote areas in daily life, highlighting the superiority of multi-energy (thermal energy, electrical energy, and electrochemical energy) complementary.

Considering the large amount of cement consumed in construction and that straw and other renewable resources are discarded in considerable amounts every year, the heat transfer mechanism of solid-core functional paper honeycomb plates (FHPs) was investigated by calculating and analyzing the equivalent thermal conductivity λE of honeycomb plates (HPs) to develop functional sandwich plates and realize the utilization of straw as a resource. The results led to the following conclusions: (1) Under normal temperatures and hot-above/cold-below conditions, radiative heat transfer, which is usually neglected under normal temperatures, was the primary heat transfer mode in HPs. (2) Local convection occurred in HPs due to weak disturbances when the plate thickness h was greater than 15–20 mm. Accordingly, a technical approach was proposed for improving the heat insulation performance of HPs through multilayer substitution. (3) The filling materials could effectively prevent radiative and local convective heat transfer by drastically reducing the cavity size in the honeycomb structure. The heat conduction among solid particles had little influence on the λE of the FHPs. This paper lays a theoretical foundation for studying the heat transfer mechanism of FHPs at normal temperatures.

Mercury (Hg) is a kind of the most common heavy metals with high toxicity in nature, existing in water, soil, and even food. Hence, it is of great importance to develop a simple, effective way to detect Hg2+. Flexible sensing has attracted extensive attention in recent years, which can be flexibly applied in various detection environments. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) with conjugation structure which can accelerate the transfer of electrons and inhibit the recombination of carriers is favorable to the photoelectrochemical (PEC) process. Here, Br doped PEDOT modified carbon paper with narrower bandgap was firstly fabricated through situ thermal polymerization which exhibited high photocurrent intensity under visible-light irradiation. The success synthesis of PEDOT was confirmed by SEM, XPS, FT-IR and Raman spectrum. Meanwhile, the as-prepared electrode can be mass produced with good reproducibility. Based on excellent performance of as-prepared electrode of Br doped PEDOT/carbon paper, we constructed a PEC sensing platform for Hg2+ detection with the detection limit of 0.3 nM and linear range from 1 nM to 450 nM. In addition, the PEC sensor exhibited speedy response, outstanding stability, excellent selectivity, wide linear range, and was used for determination of Hg2+ in river water samples with recover range of 97.7–104.5 % and RSD of 2.8–4.7 %.

The massless Dirac electron shows a linear energy dispersion in topological insulators (TIs) and these materials posses interesting properties such as high mobility, tuneable density and protection against backscattering over the time reversal symmetry and strong spin-orbit interaction. The flexibility is also an important parameter for development of wearable devices specially THz detector for imaging and quantum devices for optoelectronics applications. In this research work first time Bi2Te3 TIs thin film is fabricated on inhouse develop metallic multi wall carbon nanotubes flexible paper (MWCNT-FP) and characterized by terahertz-time domain spectroscopy acquired at room temperature. This research work delivers exclusive opportunities to explore interesting phenomena in topological surface states and topological phase transition in Bi2Te3 TIs thin film. Here, we measured terahertz absorption, optical density conductance and conductivity. An excellent broad band absorption is observed between 0.02 and 3.0 THz. The real conductance level is scientifically quite linear below 3.0 meV and thereafter certain increase. Similar trend is observed for the study of an imaginary conductance with respect to photon energy. The optical conductivity is observed in the range of 0.02–2.0 THz.

Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors (FASSCs) have attracted much attention as power supplies for portable and wearable electronic products. Herein, we report the fabrication of a foldable, extra lightweight, flexible chopped carbon fiber paper (CFP) with a porous network structure prepared via wet-mold papermaking that can serve as a conductive substrate. The conductivity and pseudocapacitance of the electrode were improved by controlling the growth of 3D Cu(OH)2 nanorod arrays on CFP substrate. The Cu(OH)2@CFP electrode has a high specific capacitance of 421.8 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 with capacitance retention of 82.98% at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The FASSC manifested not only a large capacitance of 196.1 mF cm−2 at 2 mA cm−2, as well as energy and power densities of 6.97 × 10−2 mWh cm−2 and 1.6 mW cm−2, respectively, but also excellent stability of 80.3% over 5000 cycles at 5 mA cm−2. In addition, we confirmed that the FASSC has a large bending angle and can be twisted into various shapes, thereby indicating its applicability in portable and wearable electronic devices.

Paper-based microfluidic devices are an attractive option for developing low-cost, point-of-care diagnostic tools. To incorporate more complex assays into paper, these devices must become more sophisticated, through the sequential delivery of different liquids or reagents without user intervention. Many flow control strategies focus on slowing the fluid down. However, this can lead to increased assay times and sample loss due to evaporation. We report the use of a CO2 laser to create etched grooves on paper to accelerate wicking speeds in paper-based microfluidic devices. We explored different laser settings to determine the optimal configuration. Our findings showed that simply cutting a slit into the paper created the fastest wicking channels. The slit acted as a macro capillary, allowing fluid to bypass the paper and speed it up. Further studies determined an ideal groove pitch of 0.75 mm (spacing in between grooves) for a paper channel. Additional experiments documented how sealing grooved channels with different adhesives can influence wicking. Overall, sealing the channels with tape made them wick faster. However, sealing methods such as lamination had a negative effect on wicking. Laser-etched grooves were successfully used to design a fluid-handling architecture for a chemiresistive paper-based biosensor. The grooves facilitated rapid, sequential delivery of sample and wash buffer. Human serum albumin spiked in phosphate buffer, artificial urine, and artificial saliva was successfully detected at as low as 15 pM. Etching grooves in paper is a simple process that requires no additional materials or chemicals, allowing single-step fabrication of paper-based microfluidic channels.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are promising candidates for powering flexible devices with high energy densities. To realize both high areal and volumetric capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries, while maintaining flexible and mechanically robust characteristics, is challenging for their portable energy storage applications. Herein, interface covalent bonding was demonstrated to design densely-packed graphene/CoS2/nano-sulfur hybrid papers with flexible and robust characteristics for energy-dense, compact and foldable lithium-sulfur batteries. The as-designed paper cathodes showed excellent cycling stability with a low decay rate of 0.044% per cycle over 800 cycles at 1 C, as well as high reversible areal capacity (4.11 mAh cm−2) and volumetric capacity (1240 Ah L−1). Meanwhile, the assembled batteries performed a high gravimetric/volumetric energy density (363.5 Wh kg−1/378 Wh L−1) under high sulfur loading (5.6 mg cm−2) and lean electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S: 5 μL mg−1). Furthermore, durable pouch cells based on as-designed integrated paper cathodes showed negligible performance decay even at a folding angle of 180°, highlighting their practical applications for flexible power systems.

To develop functional sandwich plates (FHPs) and identify new ways to use straw, straw-core paper honeycomb plates (SHPs) were prepared. The mechanisms of the influence of the spatial distribution of various filling systems on the heat transfer performance of SHPs were investigated, and the following results were obtained. 1) The equivalent thermal conductivity (λE) of the three FHPs were significantly lower than that of the honeycomb plate (HP), and the λE of all the FHPs met or approached the requirements of high-efficiency heat insulation materials for envelope structures. Moreover, the λE values of the three FHPs were closest to each other at the upper and lower limits of the tested thickness. 2) The spatial distribution characteristics of the spherical particle and slender filling systems under natural filling conditions, their corresponding simple heat transfer models and the concept of divisional local radiative (DLR) heat transfer were presented for the first time. 3) The fundamental factor determining the magnitudes of the λE of the HP and FHPs was the presence of DLR in the core layer structures, and the heat transfer characteristics of the FHPs were the result of the combined actions of the DLR and filling material properties.
