In this study, a microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Na 2 S 2 O 8 preoxidation combined with biostimulation on petroleum-contaminated soil remediation. The response of microbial community during this process was explored using BIOLOG ECO microplate carbon utilization method and 16 s rDNA high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that use of 10 mg/g Na 2 S 2 O 8 removed 19.8 % of the petroleum hydrocarbons, reduced soil biotoxicity and did not affect soil microbial activity compared to other concentrations. Therefore, sodium persulfate of ca. 10 mg/g was used to oxidize petroleum in soil before the biostimulation experiment with organic and inorganic fertilizers. Our finding showed that the content of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soil was reduced by 43.3 % in inorganic fertilizer treatment after 60 days. The results of BIOLOG ECO microplate carbon utilization analysis and 16 S rDNA high-throughput sequencing further confirmed that biostimulation quickly restored the microbial activities in oxidant treated soil. The low-birth-weight of piglets is an important factor affecting pig enterprises. The placenta, as a key organ for material exchange between mother and foetus, directly influences the growth and development of the foetus. Allicin exhibits various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It may also play a crucial role in enhancing sow reproductive performance and placental angiogenesis. In this study, we used 70 lactating Landrace × Yorkshire binary heterozygous sows to explore the effect of allicin on the reproductive performance of sows and placental development. The sows were randomly assigned into the Allicin group (Allicin), which was fed with a diet containing 0.25% allicin, and the negative control group, which was fed with basal feed. The experimental period lasted for 114 d from the date of mating to the end of farrowing. The results showed that the addition of allicin to the gestation diets increased the number of total born piglets, born alive piglets, and high-birth-weight piglets, reduced peripartum oxidative stress, alleviated dysregulation of glucose-lipid metabolism in sows, and increased the levels of antioxidant markers in the placenta. Differential analysis of metabolites in maternal plasma and placenta samples by non-targeted metabolomics revealed that allicin improved cholesterol metabolism, steroid biosynthesis, and increased plasma progesterone levels in sows. Allicin promoted sulphur metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism in placental samples and increased the hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S) content in the placenta. In addition, Quantitative Real-time PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescence results showed that allicin upregulated the expression of angiogenesis-related genes, VEGF-A, FLK 1 and Ang 1, in the placenta, implying that it promoted placental angiogenesis. These results indicate that supplementing the diet of pregnant sows with allicin reduces oxidative stress, alleviates dysregulation of glucose-lipid metabolism during the periparturient period, and promotes placental angiogenesis and foetal development by increasing plasma progesterone level and placental H 2 S content., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Polyethylene (PE) microplastic, which is detected in various environmental media worldwide, also inevitably enters wastewater treatment plants, which may have an impact on anaerobic processes in wastewater treatment. In this work, the effect of PE microplastics on anaerobic sulfur transformation was explored. Experimental results showed that PE microplastics addition at 0.1%- 0.5% w/w promoted H 2 S production by 14.8%-27.4%. PE microplastics enhanced the release of soluble organic sulfur and inorganic sulfate, and promoted the bioprocesses of organosulfur compounds hydrolysis and sulfate reduction. Mechanism analysis showed that PE microplastics increased the content of electroactive components (e.g., protein and humic acids) contained in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). In particular, PE microplastics increased the proportion and the dipole moment of α-helix, an important component involved in electron transfer contained in extracelluar protein, which provided more electron transfer sites and promoted the α-helix mediated electron transfer. These enhanced the direct electron transfer ability of EPSs, which might explain why PE microplastics facilitated the bioprocesses of organosulfur compounds hydrolysis and sulfate reduction. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a complicated process that happens ubiquitously and quietly in many fields. As a useful nutritional ingredient in microbial culture media, yeast extract (YE) is a routinely added in the MIC field. However, how the YE participated in MIC is not fully clarified. In the present work, the effect of YE on the growth of sulfate reducing prokaryotes (SRP) Desulfovibrio bizertensis SY-1 and corrosion behavior of X70 pipeline steel were studied. It was found that the weight loss of steel coupons in sterile media was doubled when YE was removed from culture media. However, in the SRP assays without YE the number of planktonic cells decreased, but the attachment of bacteria on steel surfaces was enhanced significantly. Besides, the corrosion rate of steel in SRP assays increased fourfold after removing YE from culture media. MIC was not determined for assays with planktonic SRP but only for biofilm assays. Electroactive microorganisms are pivotal players in mineral transformation within redox interfaces characterized by pronounced oxygen and dissolved metal gradients. Yet, their systematic cultivation from such environments remains elusive. Here, we conducted an anodic enrichment using anoxic ferruginous waters from a post-mining lake as inoculum. Weak electrogenicity (j = ∼5 µA cm -2 ) depended on electroactive planktonic cells rather than anodic biofilms, with a preference for formate as electron donor. Addition of yeast extract decreased the lag phase but did not increase current densities. The enriched bacterial community varied depending on the substrate composition but mainly comprised of sulfate- and nitrate-reducing bacteria (e.g., Desulfatomaculum spp. and Stenotrophomonas spp.). A secondary enrichment strategy resulted in different bacterial communities composed of iron-reducing (e.g., Klebsiella spp.) and fermentative bacteria (e.g., Paeniclostridium spp.). Secondary electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results indicate the precipitation of sulfur- and iron-rich organomineral aggregates at the anode surface, presumably impeding current production. Our findings indicate that (i) anoxic waters containing geogenically derived metals can be used to enrich weak electricigens, and (ii) it is necessary to specifically inhibit sulfate reducers. Antimony (Sb) and sulfate are two common pollutants in Sb mine drainage and Sb-containing textile wastewater. In this paper, it was found that iron‑carbon (Fe/C) enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Sulfate inhibited Sb(V) removal (S + Sb, k = 0.101), while Fe/C alleviated the inhibition and increased Sb(V) removal rate by 2.3 times (Fe/C + S + Sb, k = 0.236). Fe/C could promote the removal of Sb(III), and Sb(III) content decreased significantly after 8 h. Meanwhile, Fe/C enhanced the removal of sulfate. The 3D-EEM spectrum of supernatant in Fe/C + S + Sb group (at 24 h) showed that Fe/C stimulated the production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in wastewater. SMP alleviated the inhibition of sulfate, promoting AnGS to reduce Sb(V). Sb(V) could be reduced to Sb(III) both by AnGS and sulfides produced from sulfate reduction. Further analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and AnGS showed that Fe/C increased the adsorbed Sb(V) in EPS and the c-type cytochrome content in AnGS, which may be beneficial for Sb(V) removal. Sb(V) reduction in Fe/C + S + Sb group may be related to the genus Acinetobacter, while in Sb group, several bacteria may be involved in Sb(V) reduction, such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium. Introduction: Environmental contributors to kidney disease progression remain elusive. We explored how residential air pollution affects disease progression in patients with primary glomerulopathies., Methods: Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (NEPTUNE) and CureGlomerulonephropathy (CureGN) participants with residential census tract data and ≥2 years of follow-up were included. Using Cox proportional hazards models, the associations per doubling in annual average baseline concentrations of total particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ) and its components, black carbon (BC), and sulfate, with time to ≥40% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or kidney failure were estimated. Serum tumour necrosis factor levels and kidney tissue transcriptomic inflammatory pathway activation scores were used as molecular markers of disease progression., Results: PM 2.5 , BC, and sulfate exposures were comparable in NEPTUNE ( n  = 228) and CureGN ( n  = 697). In both cohorts, participants from areas with higher levels of pollutants had lower eGFR, were older and more likely self-reported racial and ethnic minorities. In a fully adjusted model combining both cohorts, kidney disease progression was associated with PM 2.5 (adjusted hazard ratio 1.55 [95% confidence interval: 1.00-2.38], P  = 0.0489) and BC (adjusted hazard ratio 1.43 [95% confidence interval: 0.98-2.07], P  = 0.0608) exposure. Sulfate and PM 2.5 exposure were positively correlated with serum tumour necrosis factor (TNF) ( P  = 0.003) and interleukin-1β levels ( P  = 0.03), respectively. Microbial reductive dechlorination of organohalogenated pollutants is often limited by the scarcity of electron donors, that can be overcome with microbial electrochemical technologies (METs). In this study, polarized electrodes buried in marine sediment microcosms were investigated to stimulate PCB reductive dechlorination under potentiostatic (-0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl) and galvanostatic conditions (0.025 mA·cm -2 -0.05 mA·cm -2 ), using graphite rod as cathode and iron plate as sacrificial anode. A single circuit and a novel two antiparallel circuits configuration (2AP) were investigated. Single circuit polarization impacted the sediment pH and redox potential (ORP) proportionally to the intensity of the electrical input and inhibited PCB reductive dechlorination. The effects on the sediment's pH and ORP, along with the inhibition of PCB reductive dechlorination, were mitigated in the 2AP system. Electrodes polarization stimulated sulfate-reduction and promoted the enrichment of bacterial clades potentially involved in sulfate-reduction as well as in sulfur oxidation. Fish epidermal mucus is an important reservoir of antipathogenic compounds which serves as the first line of the immune defence. Despite its significant role in the physiology and health of fish, detailed profiling of fish epidermal mucus has yet to be explored. Therefore, this study investigates a label-free colloidal surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) method for profiling grouper mucus. Gold nanoparticles were first synthesised using the standard citrate reduction and characterised using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The influence of acidified sodium sulphate (Na 2 SO 4 ) at pH 3 as the aggregating agent on the enhancement of the SERS spectrum of different analyte samples including rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye, lysozyme solution and hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × Epinephelus lanceolatus) mucus was observed. Based on the results, an optimal Na 2 SO 4 concentration of 1 M was recorded to achieve the highest enhancement of the SERS signal for R6G and grouper mucus, while the optimal concentration for lysozyme was 0.1 M. The results indicated a higher degree of aggregation induced by lysozyme than R6G and grouper mucus. To attenuate the risk of Cadmium(Cd) contamination and the deterioration of soil quality caused by excessive nitrogen fertilizer application in greenhouse, a composite organic amendment (spend mushroom substrate and its biochar) was prepared to remedy Cd(II) ions contaminated soil (0.6 mg/kg) under different N fertilizer levels. The results showed that in the absence of a composite organic amendment, the soil pH decreased by 0.15 when the N level increased from 0.1 to 0.8 g N⋅kg -1 . However, the pH increased by 0.86-0.91, the exchangeable Cd(II) ions content decreased by 26.0%-26.7%, the microbial biomass increased by 34.34%-164.46%, and the number of copies of the AOB gene increased by 13-20 times with the application of composite organic amendment and the increase of N level. Co-contaminants and complex subsurface conditions pose great challenges to site remediation. This study demonstrates the potential of electrokinetic bioremediation (EK-BIO) in treating co-contaminants of chlorinated solvents and heavy metals in low-permeability soils with elevated sulfate. EK-BIO columns were filled with field soils, and were fed by the electrolyte containing 20 mg/L trichloroethylene (TCE), 250 μM Cr(VI), 25 μM As(III), 10 mM lactate, and 10 mM sulfate. A dechlorinating consortium containing Dehalococcoides (Dhc) was injected several times during a 199-d treatment at ∼1 V/cm. Sulfate reduction, Cr/As immobilization, and complete TCE biodechlorination were observed sequentially. EK-BIO facilitated the delivery of lactate, Cr(VI)/As(III), and sulfate to the soils, creating favorable reductive conditions for contaminant removal. Supplementary batch experiments and metagenomic/transcriptomic analysis suggested that sulfate promoted the reductive immobilization of Cr(VI) by generating sulfide species, which subsequently enhanced TCE biodechlorination by alleviating Cr(VI) toxicity. The dechlorinating community displayed a high As(III) tolerance. Metagenomic binning analysis revealed the dechlorinating activity of Dhc and the potential synergistic effects from other bacteria in mitigating heavy metal toxicity. Based on the dye/salts separation efficiency and membrane injury caused by serious pollution of dye/salts wastewater, this study constructed a 2D tight ultrafiltration membrane that could both solve the membrane injury problem and improve the dye/salts separation efficiency, the compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance by 2D material magnesium-aluminum Layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH). The self-repairing of physical injury was achieved through the swelling effect of AMPS-PAN, this property was proved by permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, the comparison of scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the mechanical strength after physical injury. The healing of chemical injury occured through the reaction of CC and polyethersulfone chain breakage, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, and mechanical property. The high separation efficiency of dye/salts was achieved through 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by separation selectivity ɑ. The compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance was obtained by 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by the penetration and self-healing performance. Morever, the membrane illustrated excellent both permeability and dye/sals separation efficiency, just like the permeate flux, the retention performance of sodium sulfate in methyl blue/sodium sulfate solution, the retention performance of Na 2 SO 4 in methyl blue/Na 2 SO 4 solution, the retention rate of methyl blue were 99.1 L/m 2 h, 12.5%, 7.9%, 97.7%, respectively. Mangrove sediments are unique ecosystems providing habitats for diverse organisms, especially microbial communities. However, little is known about the diversity and environmental risk of a critical group of microorganisms, the protists. To address this gap, we employed metagenome sequencing technologies to provide the first comprehensive view of the protistan community in the mangrove sediment. Our results surprisingly showed that parasitic protists dominated the protistan community in mangrove sediments, with an average abundance of 59.67%, one of the highest in all ecosystems on Earth. We also found that the relative abundance of protists decreased significantly (R = -0.21, p = 0.045) with latitude but increased with depths (R = 0.7099, p < 0.001). The parasitic communities were positively influenced by microbial (bacteria, fungi, and archaea) communities, including horizontal-scale and vertical-scale. In addition, sulfate and salinity had the most significant influence on the protistan community. Background: The relationship between long-term exposure to PM 2.5 and mortality is well-established; however, the role of individual species is less understood., Objectives: In this study, we assess the overall effect of long-term exposure to PM 2.5 as a mixture of species and identify the most harmful of those species while controlling for the others., Methods: We looked at changes in mortality among Medicare participants 65 years of age or older from 2000 to 2018 in response to changes in annual levels of 15 PM 2.5 components, namely: organic carbon, elemental carbon, nickel, lead, zinc, sulfate, potassium, vanadium, nitrate, silicon, copper, iron, ammonium, calcium, and bromine. Data on exposure were derived from high-resolution, spatio-temporal models which were then aggregated to ZIP code. We used the rate of deaths in each ZIP code per year as the outcome of interest. Covariates included demographic, temperature, socioeconomic, and access-to-care variables. We used a mixtures approach, a weighted quantile sum, to analyze the joint effects of PM 2.5 species on mortality. We further looked at the effects of the components when PM 2.5 mass levels were at concentrations below 8 μg/m 3 , and effect modification by sex, race, Medicaid status, and Census division., Results: We found that for each decile increase in the levels of the PM 2.5 mixture, the rate of all-cause mortality increased by 1.4% (95% CI: 1.3%-1.4%), the rate of cardiovascular mortality increased by 2.1% (95% CI: 2.0%-2.2%), and the rate of respiratory mortality increased by 1.7% (95% CI: 1.5%-1.9%). These effects estimates remained significant and slightly higher when we restricted to lower concentrations. The role of anionic counterions of divalent metal salts in alginate gelation and hydrogel properties has been thoroughly investigated. Three anions were selected from the Hofmeister series, namely sulphate, acetate and chloride, paired in all permutations and combinations with divalent metal cations like calcium, zinc and copper. Spectroscopic analysis revealed the presence of anions and their interaction with the respective metal cations in the hydrogel. The data showed that the gelation time and other hydrogel properties were largely controlled by cations. However, subtle yet significant variations in viscoelasticity, water uptake, drug release and cytocompatibility properties were anion dependent in each cationic group. Computational modelling based study showed that metal-anion-alginate configurations were energetically more stable than the metal-alginate models. The in vitro and in silico studies concluded that acetate anions preceded chlorides in the drug release, swelling and cytocompatibility fronts, followed by sulphate anions in each cationic group. Overall, the data confirmed that anions are an integral part of the metal-alginate complex. Furthermore, anions offer a novel option to further fine-tune the properties of alginate hydrogels for myriads of applications. Alfalfa polysaccharide (AP) and sulfated alfalfa polysaccharide (SAP) exhibit potential for alleviating obesity. This study aimed to analyze the mechanism of action of AP and SAP in alleviating obesity through combined microbiomics and metabolomics. The research selected validated optimal AP and SAP concentration for experiment. The results showed that AP and SAP down-regulated colonic inflammatory gene expression, regulated intestinal pH to normal, and restored intestinal growth. Microbial sequencing showed that AP and SAP altered the microbial composition ratio. AP increased the relative abundance of Muribaculaceae and Romboutsia. SAP increased the relative abundance of Dubosiella, Fecalibaculum and Desulfovibrionaceae. Metabolomic analysis showed that AP regulated steroid hormone biosynthesis, neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions and bile secretion pathways. SAP focuses more on pathways related to amino acid metabolism. Meanwhile, AP and SAP down-regulated the mRNA expression of colonic COX-2, PepT-1 and HK2 and up-regulated the mRNA expression of TPH1. Correlation analysis showed a strong correlation between metabolites and gut bacteria. Dubosiella, Faecalibaculum may be the critical marker flora for polysaccharides to alleviate obesity. The combined anammox/mixotrophic denitrification process was conducted in two granular sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) during a 200-day operation. Both reactors were fed with synthetic medium, but SBR2 was enriched with additional sulfate (SO 4 2- ) which influenced sulfate reduction ammonium oxidation (SRAO) and heterotrophic reduction of SO 4 2- by sulfate reducing bacteria. It was hypothesized that the addition of SO 4 2- could positively impact the removal rates of N-S-C compounds. A low C/N ratio (0.4-1.6) was maintained to prevent inhibition of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB), and alternating chemical oxygen demand (COD) on/off conditions were used to regenerate AnAOB during COD-off phases and heterotrophic denitrifiers during COD-on phases. Stoichiometric analysis showed that introducing SO 4 2- in SBR2 enhanced the ammonium utilization rate, which was approximately 10 % higher compared to SBR1 in the final stage of the experiment (25.8 vs. 22.8 mg N/(g VSS·h)). The total nitrogen removal efficiencies ranged from 62 % to 99 % in both reactors, with SBR2 consistently exhibiting approximately 4 % higher efficiency than SBR1. In SBR2, the maximum overall SO 4 2- utilization efficiency reached 27 % under COD-off conditions, while overall COD utilization was almost complete under COD-on conditions. A strong correlation (R 2  = 0.98) was observed between SO 4 2- production and COD utilization. The key players responsible for N and S transformations in response to SO 4 2- addition were Candidatus Brocadia and Chloroflexi - Anaerolineae. This study highlights the potential to enhance the overall efficiency of N-S-C removal by implementing an integrated anammox/mixotrophic denitrification process. Reduced graphene oxide/iron nanoparticles (rGO/FeNPs) synthesized by the chemical method have been used in Fenton oxidation of organic contaminants, yet little is known about biosynthesized rGO/FeNPs using green tea extract (GT) as how to activate persulfate in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes. In this study, rGO/FeNPs were used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for 17β-estradiol (βE 2 ) and estriol (E 3 ) removal. The rGO/FeNPs-PDS system removed 83.6% of βE 2 and 62.5% of E 3 within 240 min, which was confirmed by a combination of adsorption and degradation via both radical and non-radical pathways. Four main reactive species in βE 2 and E 3 degradation were observed, i.e., hydroxyl radical (·OH), sulfate radical (SO 4 ·- ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and electron transfer, with the respective contributions of ·OH (32.9 and 34.7%), SO 4 ·- (16.1 and 19.7%), 1 O 2 (12.2 and 14.1%) and electron transfer (8.0 and 7.2%). Analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and electrochemical measurements all indicated that beside the well-known role of Fe, CO from rGO through the generation of ·OH, SO 4 ·- , 1 O 2 and electron transfer, as well as GT through electron transfer also participated in the activation of PDS. Finally, the degradation pathways of βE 2 /E 3 were proposed. This study evaluated the resilience of a long-term anaerobic treatment system exposed to sulfate, lincomycin (LCM) and their combined stress. LCM was found to impede anaerobic propionate degradation, while sulfate for restraining methanogenic acetate utilization. The combined stress, with influent LCM of 200 mg/L and sulfate of 1404 mg/L, revealed severer inhibition on anaerobic digestion than individual inhibition, leading to 73.9 % and 38.5 % decrease in methane production and sulfate removal, respectively. Suppression on propionate-oxidizing bacteria like unclassified&#95;f&#95;&#95;Anaerolineae and unclassified&#95;f&#95;&#95;Syntrophaceae further demonstrated LCM's inhibitory effect on propionate degradation. Besides, the down-regulation of genes encoding dissimilatory sulfate reduction enzymes caused by LCM triggered great inhibition on sulfate reduction. A notable increase in ARGs was detected under sulfate-stressed condition, owing to its obvious enrichment of tetracycline-resistant genes. Deep Geological Repositories (DGRs) consist of radioactive waste contained in corrosion-resistant canisters, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, and buried few hundred meters in a stable geological formation. The effects of bentonite microbial communities on the long-term stability of the repository should be assessed. This study explores the impact of harsh conditions (60 °C, highly-compacted bentonite, low water activity), and acetate:lactate:sulfate addition, on the evolution of microbial communities, and their effect on the bentonite mineralogy, and corrosion of copper material under anoxic conditions. No bentonite illitization was observed in the treatments, confirming its mineralogical stability as an effective barrier for future DGR. Anoxic incubation at 60 °C reduced the microbial diversity, with Pseudomonas as the dominant genus. Culture-dependent methods showed survival and viability at 60 °C of moderate-thermophilic aerobic bacterial isolates (e.g., Aeribacillus). Despite the low presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the bentonite blocks, we proved their survival at 30 °C but not at 60 °C. Copper disk's surface remained visually unaltered. However, in the acetate:lactate:sulfate-treated samples, sulfide/sulfate signals were detected, along with microbial-related compounds. Chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs) are common in flooded environments. To examine the residual status and effects of COPs on flooded environments, a survey of 7 coastal wetlands in Zhejiang, East China was conducted. Total COP concentrations detected from 95.69 to 412.76 ng g -1 dw. Gamma-HCH and o,p'-DDT posed the greatest risk with exceedance rates of 100% according to sediment quality guidelines. Samples with higher COP pollution had higher microbial diversity, more complex microbial networks, more deterministic community assembly processes and lower microbiome stability, indicating an improved soil function for balance cycle of substances, especially for COP degradation. Further analysis using quantitative real-time PCR suggested COP-dechlorination interacted with natural redox processes, especially sulfate reduction and methanogenesis. The positive correlation between CH 4 and pentachlorobenzene indicated a potential increase in greenhouse gas emissions caused by COP pollution. Correlation between dsr gene and COPs demonstrated the ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to degrade COPs. Particularly, facultative OHRB such as sulfate-reducing bacteria hold significant importance in the process of COP-dechlorination. This finding provides a reference for COP pollution remediation. The co-exposure of microplastics (MPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil is inevitable, but their combined effect on cycles of typical biogenic elements (e.g. C, N, Fe, S) is still unclear. And the co-exposure of MPs and PCBs caused more severe effects than single exposure to pollution. Therefore, in this study, a 255-day anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted by adding polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs, including 30 ± 10 μm and 500 μm) and PCB138. The presence of PE MPs inhibited the PCB138 degradation. Also, PE MPs addition (1%, w/w) enhanced the methanogenesis, Fe(Ⅲ) reduction, and sulfate reduction while inhibited nitrate reduction and the biodegradation of PCB138. And PCB138 addition (10 mg·kg -1 ) promoted the methanogenesis and Fe(Ⅲ) reduction, but inhibited sulfate reduction and nitrate reduction. Strikingly, the presence of PE MPs significantly reduced the impact of PCB138 on the soil redox processes. The abundance changes of special microbial communities, including Anaeromyxobate, Geobacter, Bacillus, Desulfitobacterium, Thermodesulfovibrio, Metanobacterium, etc., were consistent with the changes in soil redox processes, revealing that the effect of PE MPs and/or PCB138 on the cycle of typical biogenic elements was mainly achieved by altering the functional microorganisms. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory condition characterized by severe symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss. Growing evidence underscores the direct involvement of the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) in the development and progression of IBD, along with its associated complications, including colorectal cancer. The NRF2 pathway plays a crucial role in cellular responses to oxidative stress, and dysregulation of this pathway has been implicated in IBD. Flavones, a significant subclass of flavonoids, have shown pharmacological impacts in various diseases including IBD, through the NRF2 signaling pathway. In this study, we conducted a screening of compounds with a flavone structure and identified NJK15003 as a promising NRF2 activator. NJK15003 demonstrated potent NRF2 activation, as evidenced by the upregulation of downstream proteins, promoter activation, and NRF2 nuclear translocation in IBD cellular models. Treatment with NJK15003 effectively restored the protein levels of tight junctions in cells treated with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and in DSS-treated mice, suggesting its potential to protect cells from barrier integrity disruption in IBD. In DSS-treated mice, the administration of NJK15003 resulted in the prevention of body weight loss, a reduction in colon length shortening, and a decrease in the disease activity index. Furthermore, NJK15003 treatment substantially alleviated inflammatory responses and apoptotic cell death in the colon of DSS-treated mice. This study focuses on the production of sulfated cellulose microfibers and nanocellulose hydrogels from native cellulose microfibers (CMF). The process involves using a combination of H 2 SO 4 and urea, resulting in highly sulfated cellulose microfiber hydrogel (SC) with notable properties such as a sulfur content of 7.5 %, a degree of sulfation of 0.49, a surface charge content of 2.2 mmol. g -1 , and a high yield of 81 %. The SC hydrogel can be easily fibrillated into sulfated nanocellulose hydrogel (S-NC) with elongated nanocellulose structures having an average diameter of 6.85 ± 3.11 nm, as determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirms the presence of sulfate groups on the surface of the nanocellulose material. Transparent films with good mechanical properties can be produced from both cellulose microfiber and nanocellulose hydrogels. The sulfate functionality gives the hydrogel attractive rheological properties and makes S-NC re-dispersible in water, which can be beneficial for various applications. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) + dermatan sulfate (DS) and hyaluronan (HA) concentrations and the sulfation patterns of CS-DS in the cartilaginous tissues and alimentary canals of Honshu Sika deer, Hokkaido Sika deer, and cattle were investigated in the present study. CS + DS concentrations were high in cartilaginous tissues, namely, the trachea and scapular cartilage region (5- 12 g*), and low in the alimentary canal (~0.3 g*). HA concentrations were low in cartilaginous tissues and the alimentary canal (~0.2 g*). All tissues mainly contained A-type [HexAGalNAc(4-sulfate)] and C-type [HexAGalNAc(6-sulfate)] CS + DS. The ratios of A-type/C-type CS + DS were 1.2- 3.1 and 0.9- 16.4 in cartilaginous tissues and the alimentary canal, respectively. CS + DS predominantly comprised β-D-GlcA and α-L-IdoA in cartilaginous tissues and the alimentary canal, respectively. The alimentary canal characteristically contained up to 14 % highly sulfated E-type [HexAGalNAc(4,6-disulfate)] and D-type [HexA(2-sulfate)GalNAc(6-sulfate)] CS + DS. The specific distributions of CS and DS were immunohistochemically confirmed using CS + DS-specific antibodies. Although the omasum of cattle is more likely to have higher concentrations of CS + DS and HA, no significant species differences were observed in the concentrations or sulfation patterns of CS + DS among species for Honshu Sika deer, Hokkaido Sika deer, and cattle. Background: Ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) exposure has been associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer mortality, but the attributable constituents remain unclear., Objectives: To investigate the association of long-term exposure to PM 2.5 constituents with total and site-specific gastrointestinal cancer mortality using a difference-in-differences approach in Jiangsu province, China during 2015-2020., Methods: We split Jiangsu into 53 spatial units and computed their yearly death number of total gastrointestinal, esophagus, stomach, colorectum, liver, and pancreas cancer. Utilizing a high-quality grid dataset on PM 2.5 constituents, we estimated 10-year population-weighted exposure to black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and chloride in each spatial unit. The effect of constituents on gastrointestinal cancer mortality was assessed by controlling time trends, spatial differences, gross domestic product (GDP), and seasonal temperatures., Results: Overall, 524,019 gastrointestinal cancer deaths were ascertained in 84.77 million population. Each interquartile range increment of BC (0.46 μg/m 3 ), OC (4.56 μg/m 3 ), and nitrate (1.41 μg/m 3 ) was significantly associated with a 27%, 26%, and 34% increased risk of total gastrointestinal cancer mortality, respectively, and these associations remained significant in PM 2.5 -adjusted models and constituent-residual models. We also identified robust associations of BC, OC, and nitrate exposures with site-specific gastrointestinal cancer mortality. The mortality risk generally displayed increased trends across the total exposure range and rose steeper at higher levels. We did not identify robust associations for sulfate, ammonium, or chlorine exposure. Adsorption-based treatment of sulfate contaminated water sources present challenges due to its favourable hydration characteristics. Herein, a copper-modified granular chitosan-based biocomposite (CHP-Cu) was prepared and characterized for its sulfate adsorption properties at neutral pH via batch equilibrium and fixed-bed column studies. The CHP-Cu adsorbent was characterized by complementary methods: spectroscopy (IR, Raman, X-ray photoelectron), thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) and pH-based surface charge analysis. Sulfate adsorption at pH 7.2 with CHP-Cu follows the Sips isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity (407 mg/g) that exceeds most reported values of granular biosorbents at similar conditions. For the dynamic adsorption study, initial sulfate concentration, bed height, and flow rate were influential parameters governing sulfate adsorption. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models yield a sulfate adsorption capacity (146 mg/g) for the fixed bed system at optimized conditions. CHP-Cu was regenerated over 5 cycles (33 % to 31 %) with negligible Cu-leaching. The adsorbent also displays excellent sulfate uptake properties, regenerability, and sustainable adsorbent properties for effective point-of-use sulfate remediation in aqueous media near neutral pH (7.2). A novel composite sulfur-manganese carbonate autotrophic denitrification (SMAD) system was developed to reduce sulfate production and provide pH buffer function while improving denitrification efficiency without external organics. The average removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) was 98.09% and 96.29%, and that of NO 3 - -N was 99.53% and 97.77%, respectively, in the SMAD system with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h and 3 h. They were significantly higher than that in the controls (quartz sand, manganese carbonate ore, and sulfur systems). The H + produced by the sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) process promoted the release of Mn 2+ in the SMAD system. And this system had a stable pH with no accumulation of NO 2 - -N. The decrease of sulfate and formation of Mn oxides through Mn 2+ electron donation confirmed the presence of the manganese autotrophic denitrification (MAD) process in the SMAD system. Dominant functional bacteria in the SMAD system were Thiobacillus, Chlorobium, and Sulfurimonas, which were linked to nitrogen, sulfur, and manganese conversion and promoted denitrification. Meanwhile, Flavobacterium participating in Mn 2+ oxidation was found only in the SMAD system. The microbial ecological functions associated with the nitrogen and sulfur cycles during composting have not been thoroughly elucidated. Using metagenomic sequencing, the microbial mechanisms underlying the nitrogen and sulfur metabolism during livestock and poultry manure composting were investigated in this study. The findings demonstrate that functional redundancy among microorganisms is a crucial factor for the nitrogen and sulfur cycling during livestock and poultry manure composting. Processes such as organic sulfur synthesis, assimilatory sulfate reduction, ammonia assimilation, and denitrification were found to be prevalent. Additionally, there was a certain degree of conservation in nitrogen and sulfur conversion functions among microorganisms at the phylum level. All high-quality metagenomic assembly genomes (MAGs) possessed carbon fixation potential, with 86.3 % of MAGs containing both nitrogen and sulfur conversion genes. Except for bin30, other MAGs encoding sulfur oxidation enzymes were found to be associated with at least one denitrification gene. This suggests a potential interplay between nitrogen and sulfur metabolism among microorganisms. 45, 19, 1, 31, 1, and 2 MAGs could completely regulate organic sulfur synthesis, assimilatory sulfate reduction, thiosulfate oxidation to sulfate, glutamine synthase-glutamate synthase pathway (GS-GOGAT), denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction, respectively by encoding the required enzymes. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used metal-based engineered nanomaterials in biomedicine and nanotechnology, and account for >50 % of global nanomaterial consumer products. The increasing use of AgNPs potentially causes marine ecosystem changes; however, the environmental impacts of man-made AgNPs are still poorly studied. This study reports for the first time that man-made AgNPs intruded into cold seeps, which are important marine ecosystems where hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluid seepage occur. Using a combination of electron microscopy, geochemical and metagenomic analyses, we found that in the cold seeps with high AgNPs concentrations, the relative abundance of genes associated with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) was lower, while those related to the sulfide oxidizing and sulfate reducing were higher. This suggests that AgNPs can stimulate the proliferation of sulfate-reducing and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria, likely due to the effects of activating repair mechanisms of the cells against the toxicant. A reaction of AgNPs with hydrogen sulfide to form silver sulfide could also effectively reduce the amount of available sulfate in local ecosystems, which is generally used as the AOM oxidant. Celiac disease and other types of gluten intolerance significantly affect the life quality of patients making them restrict the diet removing all food produced from wheat, rye, oat, and barley flour, and some other products. These disorders arise from protease resistance of poorly soluble proteins prolamins, contained in gluten. Enhanced proteolytic digestion of gliadins might be considered as a prospective approach for the treatment of celiac disease and other types of gluten intolerance. Herein, we tested a range of sulfated polymers (kappa-carrageenan, dextran sulfate and different polysaccharides from brown seaweeds, and a synthetic polystyrene sulfonate) for the ability to activate gliadin digestion by human digestive proteases, pepsin and trypsin. Sulfated polysaccharide from Fucus evanescens enhanced proteolytic digestion of gliadins from wheat flour and reduced its cytotoxicity on intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell culture. Protein tyrosine sulfation is a post-translational modification (PTM) that is rarely reported in recombinant therapeutic proteins. However, when sulfation does occur, the additional negative charge from the modification can influence intermolecular interactions and antigen-binding activity, making it a critical quality attribute that necessitates stringent control. In this study, we developed a unique hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) method for the separation and quantification of a therapeutic bispecific antibody with varying degrees of sulfation. Despite the increased surface hydrophilicity of sulfated species, the HIC method provides enhanced retention. Baseline resolution was attained based on the degree of sulfation, independent of other PTMs such as C-terminal amidation and forced deamidation. Further structure-function relationship studies of enriched sulfated bispecific antibody species were conducted using mass spectrometry and fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA). These studies revealed that the tyrosine sulfation modification, which occurs in the complementarity-determining region (CDR), is a critical quality attribute and can adversely impact the antibody's binding to its cognate antigen. In present study, eco-friendly sulfated cellulose-magnetic biocomposite was successfully synthesized with a simple method from hemp biomass. ATR-FTIR was used to determine chemical changes, while FE-SEM-EDS, STEM, XRD, TG/DTA, and BET techniques were employed to identify changes in morphology, elemental composition, crystal structure, and thermal degradation. Moreover, the saturation magnetization and pHpzc values of the MSHB were also determined. The effectiveness of magnetic sulfated hemp biomass (MSHB) was tested in the removal of cationic dyes from wastewater, including methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green oxalate (MGO). The adsorption all three dyes to MSHB, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model were determined to be more appropriate, and was endothermic and spontaneous from thermodynamic parameters, too. The maximum MSHB adsorption capacities were found to be 457.6, 509.3, and 1300 mg/g for MB, CV, and MGO at 298 K. With increasing temperature, it also drastically increased in capacity. The outstanding property of the MSHB is that it shows high removal performance wide pH range, even after ten cycles its high removal efficiency is still over 96 % for all three dyes and almost unaffected from dense matrix medium. Heparin, a bio-molecule with the highest negative charge density, is pharmaceutically important to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection due to its strong competitive binding to spike protein compared with cellular heparan sulfate, which was confirmed as a co-receptor for virus-host cell interaction. Hence, the refined structural characterization of heparin targeting viral protein-HS interaction was significant for developing antiviral pharmaceuticals. In our study, heparin oligomers (dp ≥ 4) were prepared using heparinase I. The affinity oligosaccharides binding to Omicron spike protein RBD were separated by affinity chromatography and size exclusion chromatography. HILIC-ESI-FTMS was used for chain mapping analysis. The basic building blocks were analyzed and the binding domain sequence was produced by Seq-GAG software and further measured by SAX chromatography. As results, heparin octasaccharide was found with significantly higher binding ability than hexasaccharide and tetrasaccharide, and the octasaccharide [ΔUA-GlcNS6S-GlcA-GlcNS6S-IdoA2S-GlcNS6S-IdoA2S-GlcNS6S] with 12 sulfate groups showed high binding to RBD. The mechanism of this structurally well-defined octasaccharide binding to RBD was further investigated by molecular docking. The affinity energy of optimal pose was -6.8 kcal/mol and the basic amino acid residues in RBD sequence (Arg403, Arg452, Arg493 and His505) were identified as the major contribution factor to interacting with sulfate/carboxyl groups on saccharide chain. In this study, a novel supramolecular deep eutectic solvent consisting of sulfated-β-CD and citric acid (S-β-CD-CA) is reported for the first time. This innovative system was evaluated as a sole chiral selector in capillary electrophoresis for the enantioseparation of six fluorine-substituted amphetamine analogs, yielding remarkable outcomes. Baseline separations of all amphetamine analogs under study were achieved in less than 21.00 min using the S-β-CD-CA as the chiral selector. It was observed that the addition of 0.050 % v/v S-β-CD-CA into the background electrolyte resulted in the baseline separation of five out of the six fluorine-substituted amphetamine analogs, while in the case of the para-substituted amphetamine analog, 4-fluoramphetamine (4-FA), a higher percentage (0.15 % v/v) was required to achieve baseline enantioseparation. Ion mobility (IM) separations, especially when combined with mass spectrometry, offer the opportunity for the rapid analysis and characterization of mixtures. However, the limited resolution afforded by many IM systems means that in practice applications may be limited. Here we have employed an IM separation on a high-resolution cyclic IM device with MS/MS to separate and characterize mixtures of sulfated isomers of tyrosine and associated metabolites containing multiple sulfated isoforms present in reaction mixtures. The cIMS device allowed ions, not resolved using a single pass, to be subjected to multiple passes, enabling the resolution of those with similar collision cross sections (CCS). Predicted single pass CCS values calculated for the isomers likely to be present in these mixtures showed only small differences between them, ranging between of between 0.1 - 0.7 % depending on structure. These small differences highlight the high degree of mobility resolution required for separating the isomers. Experimentally different isoforms of tyrosine sulfate and sulfated tyrosine metabolites could be sufficiently resolved via multipass separations (3-35 passes). This degree of separation provided resolving powers of up to 384 CCS/ΔCCS for sulfated dopamine which enabled good MS/MS spectra to be generated. In human urine the presence of a single sulfated form of tyrosine was detected and identified as the O-sulfate after 3 passes based on the synthetic standard. During the manufacturing of therapeutic antibodies, effective Protein A chromatography as initial column step is crucial to simplify the remaining purification effort for subsequent polishing steps. This is particularly relevant for molecules with high impurity content so that desired product purity can be attained. The present study demonstrates beneficial effects on impurity removal when applying kosmotropic salts, e.g., sodium sulfate or sodium chloride, in the elution phase. Initially, a screen using negative linear pH gradient elution evaluated the impact of the kosmotropic salts in comparison to no additive and chaotropic urea using three mAbs and three common resins. Retaining acceptable yield, the kosmotropic salts improved resolution of monomer and impurities and reduced the contents of process-related host cell proteins and DNA as well as of product-related low and high molecular weight forms, despite some resin- and mAb-dependent variations. Moreover, a decrease in hydrolytic activity measured by a new assay for polysorbase activity was observed. In contrast, urea was hardly effective. The findings served to establish optimized step elution conditions with 0.25 M of sodium sulfate for a challenging mAb with complex format (bispecific 2 + 1 CrossMab) displaying high relative hydrophobicity and impurity levels. With yield and purity both in the range of 90 %, the contents of all impurity components were reduced, e.g., low molecular weight forms by two-fold and polysorbase activity by four-fold. Background: A possible role of PM 2.5 components on ovarian reserve has not been adequately unexplored., Objective: To evaluate the association between PM 2.5 components and women' ovarian reserve over critical exposure periods in northern China, where the level of air pollution is among the nation's highest., Methods: We included 15,102 women with serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) measurements from the Center for Reproductive Medicine of Shandong University during 2015-2019. Concentrations of PM 2.5 and its five major components (0.1° × 0.1°), including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter, and black carbon, were assigned to each residential address. Multivariable linear mixed effect models combined with constituent-residual models were performed to estimate the effect sizes of essential components over six short- to long-term exposure periods., Results: The strength of association was stronger during the process from primary to small antral follicle compared with other longer windows. For every interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 mass was associated with - 8.7% (95%CI: -12.3%, -4.9%) change in AMH and the effect size was greatest for sulfate. Women with the lower level of attained education and those living inland were more susceptible compared with other population subgroups., Conclusion: Exposure to specific components of air pollution during critical exposure windows is associated with a decline in ovarian reserve. Dextran sulfate sodium is one of the important members in the field of polysaccharide biotechnology, which can induce inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the gastrointestinal tract. Nevertheless, the application of astaxanthin (AST) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), known for their pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is encumbered by limited stability and bioavailability. To surmount this challenge, dual nutritional macromolecular nanoparticles were provided for alleviating IBD. The forementioned strategy entailed the utilization of EGCG as a wall material via the Mannich reaction, resulting in the creation of specialized nanocarriers capable of mitochondrial targeting and glutathione-responsive AST delivery. In vitro investigations, these nanocarriers demonstrated an enhanced propensity for mitochondrial accumulation, leading to proficient elimination of reactive oxygen species and preservation of optimal mitochondrial membrane potential about 1.5 times stronger than free AST and EGCG. Crucially, in vivo experiments showed that the colon length of IBD mice treated with these nanocarriers increased by 51.29 % and facilitated the polarization of M2 macrophages. Moreover, the assimilation of these nanocarriers exerted a favorable impact on the composition of gut microbiota. Aging and neurodegenerative disease are accompanied by lipid perturbations in the brain. Understanding the changes in the contents and functional activity of lipids remains a challenge not only because of the many areas in which lipids perform bioactivities but also because of the technical limitations in identifying lipids and their metabolites. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate how brain lipids are altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like pathology by using mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). The spatial distributions and relative abundances of lipids in the brains were compared between APP/PS1 mice and their age-matched wild-type (WT) mice by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) MSI assays. The comparisons were correlated with the analysis using a spectrophotometric method to determine the relative contents of sulfatides in different brain regions. Significant changes of brain lipids between APP/PS1 and WT mice were identified: eight sulfoglycosphingolipid species, namely, sulfatides/sulfated hexosyl ceramides (ShexCer) and two glycerophosphoinositol (GroPIn) species, PI 36:4 and PI 38:4. The declines in the spatial distributions of these ShexCer and GroPIn species in the APP/PS1 mice brains were associated with learning- and memory-related brain regions. Compared with young WT mice, aged WT mice showed significant decreases in the levels of these ShexCer and GroPIn species. Our results provide technical clues for assessing the impact of brain lipid metabolism on the senescent and neurodegenerative brain. The decline in sulfatides and GroPIns may be crucial markers during brain senescence and AD pathology. Background: Previously, we assessed the impact of restrictive diets, including caloric restriction (CR), intermittent fasting (IF), or fasting-mimicking diet (FMD), on a healthy gastrointestinal tract. We revealed that each of the diets shows anti-inflammatory outcomes., Objective: The current study aimed to verify the diets' applicability in treating colitis., Methods: We exposed a mouse model with mild chronic dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis to ad libitum control feeding, CR, IF, or FMD. The collected samples were analyzed for markers of inflammation., Results: The diets reduced DSS-triggered increases in spleen weight and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. Diet intervention also influenced occludin levels, small intestine morphology, as well as cytokine and inflammatory gene expression, mainly in the mucosa of the proximal colon. The diets did not reverse DSS-enhanced gut permeability and thickening of the colon muscularis externa. Concerning inflammatory gene expression, the impact of DSS and the dietary intervention was limited to the colon as we did not measure major changes in the jejunum mucosa, Peyer's patches, and mesenteric lymph nodes. Further, rather modest changes in the concentration of intestinal bile acids were observed in response to the diets, whereas taurine and its conjugates levels were strongly affected., Conclusions: Despite the differences in the dietary protocol, the tested diets showed very similar impacts and, therefore, may be interchangeable when aiming to reduce inflammation in the colon. Sulfuric acid is involved in carbonate rock dissolution in karst areas and affects regional hydrogeochemical and carbon cycling processes. Sulfate sources and carbonate weathering at dripwater points of different hydrological types also differ significantly. Therefore, in this paper, three dripwater points (SQ2#, PB and MH6#) of different hydrological types in Dafeng Cave and Mahuang Cave were selected and systematically analyzed. The results show that: (1) ions in the cave dripwater mainly originated from rock weathering, and the water chemistry types were HCO 3 ·Ca-Mg and HCO 3 -SO 4 ·Ca-Mg. (2) Sulfur and oxygen isotopes reveal that sulfate in the cave water of Shuanghe Cave mainly came from a mixture of soil sulfate and chemical fertilizers. (3) The Simmr model shows that the main sources of sulfate at each dripwater point were natural sources, such as soil sulfate and gypsum dissolution. The natural sources contributed more than 80% of the sulfate in the cave water and were less affected by anthropogenic activities. (4) Carbonate weathering by sulfuric acid (CSW) can accelerate rock weathering and the prior calcite precipitation effect, involving regional CO 2 exchange through fissure pipes. The forward model results show that CSW reduced the karst carbon sinks at SQ2#, PB and MH6# by about 19.44%, 23.88% and 12.74%, respectively. Introduction: Emerging evidence suggests that uremic toxins, in particular trimethylamine-N-oxide(TMAO), indoxyl-sulfate(IS), and p-cresyl-sulfate(PCS), may associate with increased risk of cardiovascular events(CVe). However, whether uremic toxins increase after partial nephrectomy(PN) and their correlation with risk for CVe remains unknown., Methods: 100 patients managed with PN were retrospectively reviewed. TMAO/IS/PCS levels were examined by liquid chromatography-mass-spectrometry. Renal-parenchymal-volume-preservation(RPVP) was estimated from CT scans. Predicted risks for CVe were obtained using the Framingham score. Linear regression assessed association between uremic toxins, GFR and risk of CVe. Logistic regression evaluated factors associated with post-PN TMAO., Results: TMAO, IS and PCS increased from 1.7, 3.7 and 3.5 μmol/L before PN to 3.6, 5.4 and 7.4 μmol/L at latest follow-up, respectively, while GFR declined from 102 to 93 ml/min/1.73 m 2 (all p<0.001). TMAO, IS and PCS levels all negatively correlated with GFR(all p<0.001). Predicted 10-year risk of CVe increased from 1.1% pre-PN to 1.7% post-PN(p<0.001), primarily due to increased age(p<0.001), blood pressure(p = 0.002) and total cholesterol(p = 0.003). TMAO(β = 0.038) and GFR (β = -0.02) were independent predictors for predicted 10-year CVe risk on multivariable-analysis. Increased TMAO was an early and sustained finding maintained through 5 years, unlike IS, PCS and eGFR. On multivariable analysis, increased pre-PN TMAO(OR = 2.79) and decreased RPVP(OR = 3.23) were identified as independent risk factors for higher post-PN TMAO, while ischemia type/duration failed to correlate., Conclusion: Uremic toxin levels increased after PN correlating with reduced GFR. Higher TMAO independently associated with greater predicted 10-year CVe risk. Sulfated metabolites of vitamin D have been suggested to be in breastmilk, although current methods to measure sulfated vitamin D compounds in breastmilk by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) have not adequately accounted for increased aqueous solubility of these sulfated metabolites. The purpose of this study was to generate a method of LC-MS/MS for measuring vitamin D 3 -3-sulfate (VitD 3 -S) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D 3 -3-sulfate (25OHD 3 -S) specifically in human breastmilk. The resulting method uses methanol to precipitate protein and solid phase extraction to prepare the samples for LC-MS/MS. The limits of quantification for analytes in solvent were 0.23 ng/mL VitD 3 -S and 0.2 ng/mL 25OHD 3 -S. Various experiments observed concentrations ranging 0.53 to 1.7 ng/mL VitD 3 -S and ≤ 0.29 ng/mL 25OHD 3 -S. Both analytes were present in aqueous skim milk, demonstrating the enhanced aqueous solubility of these vitamin D sulfates. Colistin is a polymyxin and peptide antibiotic that can yield rapid bacterial killing, but also leads to resistance emergence. We aimed to develop a novel experimental and Quantitative and Systems Pharmacology approach to distinguish between inducible and non-inducible resistance. Viable count profiles for the total and less susceptible populations of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 from static and dynamic in vitro infection models were simultaneously modeled. We studied low and normal initial inocula to distinguish between inducible and non-inducible resistance. A novel cutoff filter approach allowed us to describe the eradication and inter-conversion of bacterial populations. At all inocula, 4.84 mg/L of colistin (sulfate) yielded ≥4 log 10 killing, followed by >4 log 10 regrowth. A pre-existing, less susceptible population was present at standard but not at low inocula. Formation of a non-pre-existing, less susceptible population was most pronounced at intermediate colistin (sulfate) concentrations (0.9 to 5 mg/L). Both less susceptible populations inter-converted with the susceptible population. Simultaneously modeling of the total and less susceptible populations at low and standard inocula enabled us to identify the de novo formation of an inducible, less susceptible population. This study aimed to functionalize a novel porous PLGA (Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid) composite scaffold in combination with nano‑calcium sulphate (nCS) and/or fucoidan (FU) to induce osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow stromal cells. The composite scaffolds (PLGA-nCS-FU, PLGA-nCS or PLGA-FU) were fabricated and subjected to characterization using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX). The biocompatibility and osteogenic induction potential of scaffolds on seeded human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hBMSCs) were studied using cell attachment and alamar blue cell viability and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin and osteogenic gene expression, respectively. The composition of different groups was reflected in FTIR, XRD and EDX. The SEM micrographs revealed a difference in the surface of the scaffold before and after FU addition. The confocal imaging and SEM micrographs confirmed the attachment of cells onto all three composite scaffolds. However, the AB assay indicated a significant increase (p < 0.05) in cell viability/proliferation seeded on PLGA-nCS-FU on day 21 and 28 as compared with other combinations. A 2-fold significant increase (p < 0.05) in ALP and OC secretion of seeded hBMSCs onto PLGA-nCS-FU was observed when compared with other combinations. A significant increase in RUNX2, OPN, COL-I and ALP genes were observed in the cells seeded on PLGA-nCS-FU on day 14 and 28 as compared with day 0. In conclusion, the incorporation of both Fucoidan and Nano‑calcium sulphate with PLGA showed a promising improvement in the osteogenic potential of hBMSCs. Sewage nutrient (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) biological removal performance is often limited by the deficient carbon source and undesirable glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), even in sulfate-containing wastewater. Thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2- ) as a bioavailable, environmentally-benign, metastable and cost-effective agent has been regarded as electron carriers that induces high sulfur-mediated bacterial activity for nutrient removal from wastewater. In this study, the long-term effects of thiosulfate on the competition between sulfur-mediated bacteria (SMB, including sulfur-reducing bacteria (SRB) and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB)) and GAOs were explored to further close the gap of our knowledge on the control of GAOs under carbon deficient wastewater. Three reactors were continuously operated for over 100 days and were fed with 200 mg acetate-COD/L and 20 (R1), 50 (R2) and 80 (R3) mg S/L thiosulfate respectively. The results revealed that adding thiosulfate at the beginning of the anoxic phase promoted sulfur metabolism and increased the proliferation of SRB (mainly Desulfobacter) and SOB (mainly Chromatiaceae). Correspondingly, the relative abundance of GAOs (mainly Candidatus&#95;Competibacter) decreased. After the carbon source was reduced, the abundance of GAOs increased and the competitive activity of SRB was weakened, resulting in the reduced sulfate reduction, which could be attributed to the fact that GAOs had a higher carbon source competitiveness than SRB under low carbon source conditions. While SOB maintained a high abundance due to the addition of thiosulfate as an additional electron donor, which enhanced the denitrification efficiency. Additionally, the dominant SOB shifted from Thiobacillus to Chromatiaceae during the long-term operation, indicating that Chromatiaceae had a higher competitive advantage for reduced sulfur (e.g., S 2 O 3 2- , Polysulfide (Poly-S)) and nitrate compared to Thiobacillus. Oral film is a novel functional carrier, which can provide a new pathway for the efficient absorption of anthocyanin. However, anthocyanin homeostasis in oral film is a prerequisite for achieving efficient absorption and utilization of anthocyanin. Herein, three sulfated polysaccharides, including chondroitin sulfate (CS), fucoidin (FU) and λ-carrageenan (λ-CG), were complexed with blueberry anthocyanin (BA) to prepare oral film formulations using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a film-forming matrix. The addition of three sulfated polysaccharides improved the stability of BA in content and color, which were associated with interactions between BA and polysaccharides. The BA retention rate of CS-BA/HPMC system increased 5.5-fold after 8 d of light-accelerated storage compared with the control group, showing the best homeostasis effect. CS and λ-CG enhanced the elongation at break and prolonged disintegration time of oral films. The addition of FU made the oral film denser and smoother, and had the highest BA release (75.72 %) in the simulated oral cavity system. In addition, the oral films of three sulfated polysaccharides complexed with BA showed superior antioxidant capacity. Purpose: Frankincense has been shown in studies to have healing benefits for people with ulcerative colitis (UC). However, its underlying mechanisms have not been fully investigated. The objective of this study was to explore the potential molecular mechanisms of Frankincense essential oil (FREO) in improving dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC from multiple perspectives., Methods: The FREO components were analyzed by GC-MS, and the interactions between the key active components and the mechanism of FREO were determined based on RNA-seq, "quantity-effect" weighting coefficient network pharmacology, WGCNA and pharmacodynamic experiments. The protection of FREO against DSS-induced UC mice was assessed by behavioral and pathological changes through mice. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of MAPK and NF-κB-related proteins by the Western Blotting and immunohistochemistry method., Results: Treatment with FREO significantly improved the symptoms of weight loss, diarrhea, stool blood, and colon shortening in UC mice. Reduced intestinal mucosal damage and the degree of inflammatory cell infiltration in the colon. Decreased TNF-α and IL-6 levels in mice's serum and inhibited phosphorylation of ERK, p65 in MAPK and NF-κB signaling., Conclusion: FREO may decrease the inflammatory response to reduce the symptoms of UC by modulating the MAPK/ NF-κB pathway. The synthesis of multifunctional conductive hydrogel has attracted extensive attention worldwide due to their integrated properties of stretchability, self-adhesion, self-healing, and high sensitivity, while it is still a challenge. Although various kinds of polysaccharides and their derivatives are used to achieve the aforementioned objective, there are few researches about hydrogel design introducing sulfated polysaccharide from Enteromorpha prolifera (SPE), which is rich in hydroxyl, sulfate, and carboxyl groups providing amounts of reaction sites for hydrogel synthesis. Herein, conductive hydrogel (PAA-Al 3+ -SPE3) reinforced by SPE was designed by simple one pot hot polymerization method. This hydrogel demonstrated charming extension ratio (up to 4027.40 %), strain stress (up to 59.94 kPa), compressive strength (19.71 Mpa), and high conductivity sensibility (GF 6.76, 300 % - 700 %). Additionally, PAA-Al 3+ -SPE3 showed good self-healing property (repaired autonomously after 60 s) and satisfied self-adhesion (31.11 kPa) due to the reversible hydrogen bonds and metal coordination interactions. Furthermore, the PAA-Al 3+ -SPE3 hydrogel showed great real-time sensing performance to monitor various motions. These findings suggest the potential of PAA-Al 3+ -SPE3 hydrogel as an affordable and reliable conductive sensing material.
