Abstract Many patients with diabetes struggle with post-meal high blood glucose due to missed or untimely meal-related insulin doses. To address this challenge, our research aims to: (1) study mealtime patterns in patients with type 1 diabetes using wearable insulin pump data, and (2) develop personalized models for predicting future mealtimes to support timely insulin dose administration. Using two independent datasets with over 45,000 meal logs from 82 patients with diabetes, we find that the majority of people ( $$\sim$$ ∼ 60%) have irregular and inconsistent mealtime patterns that change notably through the course of each day and across months in their own historical data. We also show the feasibility of predicting future mealtimes with personalized LSTM-based models that achieve an average F1 score of > 95% with less than 0.25 false positives per day. Our research lays the groundwork for developing a meal prediction system that can nudge patients with diabetes to administer bolus insulin doses before meal consumption to reduce the occurrence of post-meal high blood glucose.

Abstract Wide-scale sensing of natural and human-made events is critical for protecting against environmental disasters and reducing the monetary losses associated with telecommunication service downtime. However, achieving dense sensing coverage is difficult, given the high deployment overhead of modern sensor networks. Here we offer an in-depth exploration of state-of-polarization sensing over fiber-optic networks using unmodified optical transceivers to establish a strong correlation with ground truth distributed acoustic sensing. To validate our sensing methodology, we collect 85 days of polarization and distributed acoustic sensing measurements along two colocated, 50 km fiber-optic cables in Southern California. We then examine how polarization sensing can improve network reliability by accurately modeling overall network health and preemptively detecting traffic loss. Finally, we explore the feasibility of wide-scale seismic monitoring with polarization sensing, showcasing the polarization perturbations following low-intensity earthquakes and the potential to more than double seismic monitoring coverage in Southern California alone.

Abstract Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease characterized by pulmonary vascular remolding and occlusion, leading to the elevated pulmonary arterial pressures, right ventricular hypertrophy, and eventual heart failure if left untreated. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is crucial for devising efficient therapeutic approaches for the disease. Lung homogenates were collected weekly and underwent RNA-sequencing in the monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PH rat model to explore genes associated with PH progression. Statistical analyses revealed 1038, 1244, and 3125 significantly altered genes (P log21.5) between control and MCT-exposed rats during the first, second, and third week, respectively. Pathway enrichment analyses revealed involvement of cell cycle and innate immune system for the upregulated genes, GPCR and VEGF signaling for the downregulated genes. Furthermore, qRT-PCR validated upregulation of representative genes associated with cell cycle including Cdc25c (cell division cycle 25C), Cdc45, Top2a (topoisomerase IIα), Ccna2 (cyclin A2) and Ccnb1 (cyclin B1). Western blot and immunofluorescence analysis confirmed increases in PCNA, Ccna2, Top2a, along with other proliferation markers in the lung tissue of MCT-treated rats. In summary, RNA sequencing data highlights the significance of cell proliferation in progression of rodent PH.

Abstract Background Process approach is valuable for memory assessment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), yet its underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aims to synergize the process approach with brain structure analysis to explore both the discriminative capacity and potential mechanisms underlying the process approach. Methods 37 subjects of MCI, 35 subjects of AD and 38 subjects of healthy control (HC) were included. The process approach in Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), including discriminability (A’), response bias (B"D), semantic clustering (LBCsem) and serial clustering (LBCser) was performed. The gray matter volume (GMV) was analyzed by voxel-based morphometry. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and partial correlations were conducted to explore the value of the process approach and investigate the relationship between the process approach, traditional indices of AVLT and GMV. Results ROC analysis showed the value of A’, B"D and LBCser in differentiating MCI and AD. Combining AVLT-Immediately Recall (AVLT-IR) and LBCser showed a higher value in diagnosing MCI. Partial correlations revealed that in the MCI group, A’ and B"D were mainly positively associated with GMV of the hippocampus and temporal lobe. Conclusion This study indicated that the process approach is a promising cognitive biomarker to detect MCI and AD.

Abstract As an autoimmune disease, up to 73% of patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have a combination of extrahepatic autoimmune diseases (EHAIDs); however, the causal relationship between PBC and EHAIDs is unclear. The genome-wide association analyses provided 14 GWAS data for PBC and EHAIDs, and bidirectional, two-sample MR analyses were performed to examine the relationship between PBC and EHAIDs. The analysis using MR provides a strong and meaningful estimation of the bidirectional correlation between PBC and 7 EHAIDs: rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, autoimmune hypothyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis of its types. In addition, PBC increases the risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases such as autoimmune hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease, as well as multiple sclerosis and psoriasis. Additionally, PBC is identified as a risk factor for Crohn's disease and Celiac disease. Based on genetic evidence, there may be connections between PBC and specific EHAIDs: not all coexisting EHAIDs induce PBC, and vice versa. This underscores the significance of prioritizing PBC in clinical practice. Additionally, if any liver function abnormalities are observed during treatment or with EHAIDs, it is crucial to consider the possibility of comorbid PBC.

Abstract The geographical and ecological patterns of morphological disparity are crucial to understand how species are assembled within communities in the context of the evolutionary history, morphological evolution and ecological interactions. However, with limited exceptions, rather few studies have been conducted on the global pattern of disparity, particularly in early land plants. Here we explored the spatial accumulation of disparity in a morphologically variable and species rich liverwort genus Frullania in order to test the hypothesis of latitude disparity gradient. We compiled a morphological data set consisting of eight continuous traits for 244 currently accepted species, and scored the species distribution into 19 floristic regions worldwide. By reconstructing the morphospace of all defined regions and comparisons, we identified a general Gondwana-Laurasia pattern of disparity in Frullania. This likely results from an increase of ecological opportunities and / or relaxed constraints towards low latitudes. The lowest disparity occurred in arid tropical regions, largely due to a high extinction rate as a consequence of paleoaridification. There was weak correlation between species diversity and disparity at different spatial scales. Furthermore, long-distance dispersal may have partially shaped the present-day distribution of Frullania disparity, given its frequency and the great contribution of widely distributed species to local morphospace. This study not only highlighted the crucial roles of paleoenvironmental changes, ecological opportunities, and efficient dispersal on the global pattern of plant disparity, but also implied its dependence on the ecological and physiological function of traits.

BackgroundThis study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of women in Beijing regarding cervical precancerous lesions.MethodsThis web-based, cross-sectional study included women at Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between March 13, 2024 and April 9, 2024. A self-administered questionnaire was developed to collect participants’ demographic information and KAP scores toward cervical precancerous lesions.ResultsThe study included 951 valid questionnaires, with a mean age of 40.0 years. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 12.55 ± 6.23 (possible range: 0–26), 50.66 ± 7.48 (possible range: 13–65), and 26.13 ± 4.98 (possible range: 7–35), respectively. Current knowledge graph-based recommendation methods heavily rely on high-quality knowledge graphs, often falling short in effectively addressing issues such as the cold start problem and heterogeneous noise in user interactions. This leads to biases in user interest and popularity. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces a novel recommendation approach termed Knowledge-enhanced Perceptive Graph Attention with Graph Contrastive Learning (KPA-GCL), which leverages relational graph convolutional neural networks. The proposed method optimizes the triplet embedding representation of entity-item interactions based on relationships between adjacent entities in a heterogeneous graph. Subsequently, a graph convolutional neural network is employed for enhanced aggregation. Similarity scores from a contrastive view serve as the selection criterion for high-quality embedded representations, facilitating the extraction of refined knowledge subgraphs. Multiple adaptive contrast-loss optimization functions are introduced by combining Bayesian Personalized Ranking (BPR) and hard negative sampling techniques. Comparative experiments are conducted with ten popular existing methods using real public datasets. Results indicate that the KPA-GCL method outperforms compared methods in all datasets based on Recall, NDCG, Precision, and Hit-ratio measures. Furthermore, in terms of mitigating cold start and noise, the KPA-GCL method surpasses other ten methods. This validates the reasonability and effectiveness of KPA-GCL in real-world datasets.

ABSTRACT From May to July of 2023, one pig farm in Heyuan city, Guangdong Province of China, suffered severe piglet death and sow reproductive disorders. The common pig viruses and bacteria tested negative. To uncover the possible cause of the disease, a metagenomic analysis was performed in the pooled small intestine samples from three 8-day-old diseased piglets. The results showed that Getah virus (GETV), an RNA virus, might be the potential pathogen that affects pig health. Subsequently, GETV nucleotide was detected in all of the 15 samples collected from three diseased piglets using quantitative reverse transcription PCR, suggesting GETV as the main pathogen of the disease. A GETV strain, designated as GDHYLC23, was successfully isolated using the swine testicle cell line. Sequence analysis showed that the epidemic strain had a unique 32-nucleotide repeat insertion in the 3′ noncoding region. Phylogenetic analysis showed that GDHYLC23 belonged to the pandemic group III. The identification of GETV with new variations implies the continuous evolution of the virus, which poses potential threats to the swine industry.IMPORTANCEPig farms are faced with emerging and re-emerging viruses that may cause substantial economic loss. The identification of potentially pathogenic viruses helps to prevent and control the spread of diseases. In this study, by using metagenomic analysis, we found that a neglected virus, GETV with a unique insertion in the genome, was the main pathogen in one pig farm that suffered severe piglet death and sow reproductive disorders. Although the potential impact of such an insertion on viral pathogenicity is unknown, the surveillance of the continuing evolution of GETV in pig farms cannot be ignored.

Background/purpose: There is inconsistent evidence regarding whether the botulinum toxin A (BTA) injection can relieve pain caused by bruxism. This study aimed to estimate the efficiency of BTA injection in relieving pain caused by bruxism at different follow-up periods. Materials and methods: Five electronic databases were searched from 2005 to 2022 using search terms related to botulinum toxin and bruxism. Only controlled clinical trials were included. Two investigators reviewed each article and discussed any disagreements until a consensus was reached. Pain outcomes as evaluated by the visual analogue scale (VAS) were subjected to single-arm and Bayesian network meta-analyses. Pooling data were measured by a random-effects model. Results: Eleven studies with a total of 365 bruxism patients were included. According to the single-arm analyses of the pooled data, the reduction in bruxism-related pain after BTA injection measured 4.06 points (95% CI = 3.37 to 4.75) on the VAS, and the pain relief was significant in the first 6 months after treatment (P

Abstract Pest disasters which occurs on crops is a serious problem that not only cause crop yield loss or even crop failure but can also spread a number of plant diseases.Sulfonate derivatives have been widely used in insecticide and fungicide research in recent years. On this basis, a series of sulfonate derivatives bearing an amide unit are synthesized and the biological activities are evaluated. The bioassay results showed that compounds A 8 , A 13 , A 16 , B 1 , B 3 , B 4 , B 5 , B 10 , B 12 − 20 , C 3 , C 5 , C 9 , C 10 , C 14 , C 15 , C 17 and C 19 showed 100% activity at a concentration of 500 µg/mL against the Plutella xylostella (P. xylostella). Among them, B 15 which contains a thiadiazole sulfonate structure still shows 100% activity at 50 µg/mL concentration against P. xylostella and had the lowest median lethal concentration (LC50) (7.61 µg/mL) among the target compounds. Further mechanism studies are conducted on compounds with better insecticidal activity. Molecular docking results shows that B 15 formed hydrophobic interactions π-π and hydrogen bonds with the indole ring of Trp532 and the carboxyl group of Asp384, respectively, with similar interaction distances or bond lengths as those of diflubenzuron. Moreover, chitinase inhibition assays are performed to further demonstrate its mode of action. In addition, the anti-bacterial activity of the series of compounds is also tested and the results showed that the series of compounds has moderate biological activity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc), with inhibition rates of 91%, 92% and 92%, 88% at the concentration of 100 µg/mL, respectively. Abstract Background The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was found to be higher in individuals following COVID-19 infection. However, the intricate mechanisms that underscore this concomitance remain partially elucidated. The aim of this study was to delve deeper into the molecular mechanisms that underpin this comorbidity. Methods We acquired gene expression profiles for COVID-19 (GSE157103) and OSA (GSE75097) from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Upon identifying shared feature genes between OSA and COVID-19 utilizing LASSO, Random forest and Support vector machines algorithms, we advanced to functional annotation, analysis of protein–protein interaction networks, module construction, and identification of pivotal genes. Furthermore, we established regulatory networks encompassing transcription factor (TF)-gene and TF-miRNA interactions, and searched for promising drug targets. Subsequently, the expression levels of pivotal genes were validated through proteomics data from COVID-19 cases. Results Fourteen feature genes shared between OSA and COVID-19 were selected for further investigation. Through functional annotation, it was indicated that metabolic pathways play a role in the pathogenesis of both disorders. Subsequently, employing the cytoHubba plugin, ten hub genes were recognized, namely TP53, CCND1, MDM2, RB1, HIF1A, EP300, STAT3, CDK2, HSP90AA1, and PPARG. The finding of proteomics unveiled a substantial augmentation in the expression level of HSP90AA1 in COVID-19 patient samples, especially in severe conditions. Conclusions Our investigation illuminate a mutual pathogenic mechanism that underlies both OSA and COVID-19, which may provide novel perspectives for future investigations into the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract Background Chorioamnionitis (CA) can cause multiple organ injuries in premature neonates, particularly to the lungs. Different opinions exist regarding the impact of intrauterine inflammation on neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We aim to systematically review the relationship between CA or Funisitis (FV) and lung injury among preterm infants. Methods We electronically searched PubMed, EMbase, the Cochrane library, CNKI, and CMB for cohort studies from their inception to March 15, 2023. Two reviewers independently screened literature, gathered data, and did NOS scale of included studies. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. Results Sixteen observational studies including 68,397 patients were collected. Meta-analysis showed CA or FV increased the lung injury risk (OR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.06–1.92). Except for histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) (OR = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.57–0.90), neither clinical chorioamnionitis (CCA) (OR = 1.86, 95%CI: 0.93–3.72) nor FV (OR = 1.23, 95%CI: 0.48–3.15) nor HCA with FV (OR = 1.85, 95%CI: 0.15–22.63) had statistical significance in NRDS incidence. As a result of stratification by grade of HCA, HCA (II) has a significant association with decreased incidence of NRDS (OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.35–0.65). In terms of BPD, there is a positive correlation between BPD and CA/FV (CA: OR = 3.18, 95%CI: 1.68–6.03; FV: OR = 6.36, 95%CI: 2.45–16.52). Among CA, HCA was positively associated with BPD (OR = 2.70, 95%CI: 2.38–3.07), whereas CCA was not associated with BPD (OR = 2.77, 95%CI: 0.68–11.21). HCA and moderate to severe BPD (OR = 25.38, 95%CI: 7.13–90.32) showed a positive correlation, while mild BPD (OR = 2.29, 95%CI: 0.99–5.31) did not. Conclusion Currently, evidence suggests that CA or FV increases the lung injury incidence in premature infants. For different types of CA and FV, HCA can increase the incidence of BPD while decreasing the incidence of NRDS. And this “protective effect” only applies to infants under 32 weeks of age. Regarding lung injury severity, only moderate to severe cases of BPD were positively correlated with CA.

Abstract Multiple infections are a key component of HPV pathogenesis and have a direct impact on how an infection turns out. It’s crucial to look at the associations between HPV multiple infections and both age and HPV genotypes in the Chinese population, searching for the causative factors of multiple infections with a view to providing new ideas for the treatment and prevention of multiple infections. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the data of HPV infections among outpatients from the 2019 year to the 2021 year of Shandong Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Analyzed the correlation between HPV multiple infections and age using logistic regression. Differences in the percentage of multiple infections between age groups were compared using the chi-square test. The chi-square test compared the differences in the distribution of 15 common HPV genotypes in mono- versus multiple infections. A two-dimensional matrix presented the frequency of HPV genotype combinations. Logistics regression analysis showed that age was significantly associated with the occurrence of multiple infections, with a dominance ratio OR 1.026 (95% CI 1.02–1.04). Interestingly, the proportion of HPV multiple infections among HPV-positive individuals increases with age in people older than 30 years of age. The chi-square test showed there was a difference in the distribution of HPV genotypes between multiple infections and mono- HPV infection (χ2 = 76.4; p = 0.000), a difference in the composition of HPV genotypes for dual versus single infections (χ2 = 90.6; p = 0.000) and a difference in HPV genotypes for triple versus single infections (χ2 = 56.7; p = 0.000). A 2 × 2 matrix showed that the combination of HPV52/HPV58 (30; 6.4%) was the combination of the highest frequency of infection for dual infections; The HPV52/HPV58 (21; 4.8%) combination was the highest frequency of HPV triple infection combination. HPV multiple infections were positively correlated with age; increasing age was positively correlated with the proportion of HPV multiple infections in the total infected population; the distribution of the 15 common genotypes of HPV differed between multiple infections and single infections; and HPV52:58 was a common type of infection combination in the Shandong population.

Abstract Background Aging is associated with changes in body composition, and preventing loss of muscle mass and accumulation of excess adipose tissue in middle‐aged adults may reduce age‐related conditions at older ages. Dietary intake is one lifestyle factor shown to improve or maintain body composition. However, few studies have examined the Healthy Eating Index2015 (HEI2015), a measure of diet quality, and the association with body composition in adult men and women. Methods Participant data (n = 3017) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study were used to examine the associations of the HEI2015 with body composition measures at Year 25 (Y25), including (1) 25 year‐change in weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference and (2) a computed tomography (CT) scan at Y25 measured muscle mass, muscle quality (better quality = less lipid within the muscle), and adipose tissue depots visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and adipose within skeletal muscle (intermuscular adipose tissue; IMAT). Dietary intake was assessed by a diet history three times over 20 years, at years 0, 7, and 20. HEI2015, averaged over three exams, was created and categorized into quintiles. Multiple regression analysis evaluated the associations of body composition stratified across quintiles of HEI2015 adjusted for demographic characteristics, energy intake, lifestyle factors, and baseline anthropometric measures as appropriate. Race–sex interaction was tested (Pinteraction > 0.30). Results Over 25 years of follow‐up, averaged HEI2015 was significantly and inversely associated with weight gain (Quintile 1 (Q1) 37.3 lb vs. 32.9 in Q5; Ptrend = 0.01), change in BMI (Q1 5.8 kg/m2 vs. 5.0 in Q5; Ptrend = 0.005), and change in waist circumference (Q1 17.5 cm vs. 15.2 cm in Q5; Ptrend

Objectives In recent years, economic toxicity has significantly affected the physical and mental health as well as the quality of life of patients with colorectal cancer. However, this issue has not garnered adequate attention from healthcare professionals. This study aims to investigate the experiences of economic toxicity and coping strategies among patients with colorectal cancer fistula. The findings are intended to inform the development of suitable and effective intervention programmes to address economic toxicity within this patient population.Design A descriptive phenomenological approach was employed in this qualitative research, using a semistructured method for data collection and analysis of interview data. Traditional content analysis methods were applied, encompassing coding, categorisation and theme distillation. Data analysis continued until thematic saturation was achieved, with no new themes emerging.Setting Nanjing Medical University Lianyungang Clinical Medical College.Participants A total of 21 patients with colorectal cancer fistula were selected as interview subjects through purposive sampling. The selection took place from May 2022 to May 2023, involving patients during their stay at a tertiary hospital in Lianyungang city, Jiangsu province, China.Results In total, three pieces and eight subthemes were distilled: subjective feelings (worries about treatment costs, concerns about uncertainty about the future, worries about daily life), coping styles (coping alone, unwillingness to help, prepurchased insurance, dealing with illness, giving up treatment, inability to afford costs) and needs and aspirations (need for health policies, need for social support).Conclusions Patients with colorectal cancer fistulae experience economic toxicity, leading to significant impairment in both physical and mental health. Despite employing various coping strategies, healthcare professionals must prioritise addressing the economic toxicity issue in patients. Implementing rational and effective interventions can greatly assist patients in effectively managing economic toxicity.

Obesity is a major risk factor of hypertension, therefore quantifying the contribution of obesity to hypertension is necessary. The current study aimed to investigate the changes in population-attributable fractions (PAFs) of hypertension associated with general obesity and abdominal obesity over the recent 2 decades among the US population, as well as important sub-populations. This report was performed based on national-level cross-sectional data for 46,535 adults aged 18 years and older and 20,745 children aged 8–17 from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018. The PAFs of hypertension due to general obesity and abdominal obesity were calculated by sex, race/ethnicity, and survey year. The linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the secular trends of PAFs over the years. The prevalence of general obesity and abdominal obesity presented significantly increasing trends during the past 2 decades in the US. The PAFs of hypertension due to general obesity increased steadily from 11.9 % to 15.1 % in women with a slope of 0.38 % (95 % CI: 0.31 – 0.45 %) and from 8.4 % to 13.4 % in men with a slope of 0.46 % (95 % CI: 0.36 – 0.56 %). Similar increasing trends were also observed for the PAFs due to abdominal obesity in both women and men. Additionally, there were significantly different trends of PAFs in various races/ethnicities. Over the past 2 decades, the contributions of obesity to hypertension were gradually rising among US population, which emphasizes the importance of controlling weight to further reduce the burden of hypertension.

BackgroundPolygonatum sibiricum (PS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) first recorded in Mingyi Bielu. The book documents that PS can nourish five internal organs, be taken for a long time, relax the body and prolong lifespan. Presently, PS is widely used in TCM to prevent premature graying of hair. Based on TCM theory and clinical trials, the wine steaming processed product from PS provides a better effect. However, no published study has elucidated the anti-aging mechanism.PurposeThe study aim was to investigate the anti-aging mechanism of PS and its wine steaming processed product in mice, specifically focusing on the effect of D-galactose (D-gal) surrounding the intestinal flora and the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2-antioxidant response elements (Keap1/Nrf2/ARE) pathway.MethodsThe chemical components in Raw PS (RPS) and Wine-steamed PS (WPS) were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS). An aging model using Kunming mice was established through intraperitoneally injected D-gal. Concentrations of RPS and WPS at 5, 10, or 15 g/kg/day levels were administered intragastrically, respectively. The body weight, liver and spleen indexes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and malondialdehyde (MDA) activities in serum and brain tissue were recorded. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained brain tissue was histopathologically examined. The expressions of Keap1, Nrf2 and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) in the brain tissue at the mRNA and protein levels were respectively detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot (WB). Moreover, an Illumina Hiseq platform was used for 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) high-throughput sequencing to evaluate the proportions of intestinal flora in aging mice.ResultsThe proportions of saccharides, flavonoids, and triterpene acids were different between RPS and WPS. In the aging model mice, WPS outperformed RPS in improving body weight and mental state by increasing the spleen index, SOD and GSH-PX activities, decreasing the liver index and MDA activities, and restoring the histopathological morphology in D-gal-induced aging mice. At the mRNA levels, RPS and WPS significantly reduced the expression of Keap1 and increased the expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1. The trend in protein expressions was similar to that of the mRNA results, and WPS had a stronger effect than RPS. Fecal microbiota analysis showed that RPS and WPS restored intestinal microbiota proportions to normal levels.ConclusionThe results demonstrated that PS and its WPS had a positive effect in relieving oxidative stress in aging mice. WPS outperformed RPS, which might be related to the activation of the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway and regulation of intestinal flora.

Abstract Background Stem cell transplantation shows great potential to improve the long-term survival of cirrhosis patients. However, therapeutic effects may not be homogeneous across the whole study population. This study constructed an easy-to-use nomogram to improve prognostic prediction and aid in treatment decision making for cirrhotic patients. Methods From August 2005 to April 2019, 315 patients with decompensated cirrhosis receiving autologous peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplantation were enrolled in this study. They were randomly classified into training (2/3) and validation (1/3) groups. A predictive model was developed using Cox proportional hazard models and subsequently validated. The predictive performance of the model was evaluated and also compared with other prognostic models. Results Age, creatinine, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and Child–Turcotte–Pugh class were included in the nomogram as prognostic variables. The nomogram showed high discrimination power concerning the area under receiver operating characteristic curves (3/5-year AUC: 0.742/0.698) and good consistency suggested by calibration plots. Abstract Background Parturients are prone to postdural puncture headache (PDPH) after epidural puncture. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a fatal complication of PDPH. The main symptom of both is headache, however, the mechanism is not similar. For persistent PDPH, early differential diagnosis from CVST is essential. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements can be used to identify changes in intracranial pressure as an auxiliary tool to distinguish the cause of headache. Case presentation The dura of a 32-year-old woman undergoing cesarean section was accidentally penetrated while administering epidural anesthesia, and the patient developed PDPH the subsequent day. The patient refused epidural blood patch (EBP) treatment and was discharged after conservative treatment. Fourteen days post-discharge, she was readmitted for a seizure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) indicated low cranial pressure syndrome and superior sagittal sinus thrombosis with acute infarction. The next morning, the EBP was performed with 15 ml autologous blood. Subsequently, the headache symptoms decreased during the day and worsened at night. ONSD measurement suggested dilation of the optic nerve sheath, and subsequently, the patient showed intracranial hypertension with papilledema. After dehydration and anticoagulant treatment, the patient’s symptoms were relieved and she was discharged from the hospital 49 days later. Conclusions Headache is the main symptom of PDPH and cerebral venous thrombosis, which are difficult to distinguish. ONSD measurement may help to estimate the intracranial pressure, and early measurement may be helpful for women with PDPH to avoid serious complications, such as CVST.

Abstract Background Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has proven to be an effective treatment for improving cognition, a crucial factor in motor learning. However, current studies are predominantly focused on the motor cortex, and the potential brain mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic effects are still unclear. Given the interconnected nature of motor learning within the brain network, we have proposed a novel approach known as multi-target tACS. This study aims to ascertain whether multi-target tACS is more effective than single-target stimulation in stroke patients and to further explore the potential underlying brain mechanisms by using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods This study employs a double-blind, sham-controlled, randomized controlled trial design with a 2-week intervention period. Both participants and outcome assessors will remain unaware of treatment allocation throughout the study. Thirty-nine stroke patients will be recruited and randomized into three distinct groups, including the sham tACS group (SS group), the single-target tACS group (ST group), and the multi-target tACS group (MT group), at a 1:1:1 ratio. The primary outcomes are series reaction time tests (SRTTs) combined with electroencephalograms (EEGs). The secondary outcomes include motor evoked potential (MEP), central motor conduction time (CMCT), short interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), intracortical facilitation (ICF), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Box and Block Test (BBT), and blood sample RNA sequencing. The tACS interventions for all three groups will be administered over a 2-week period, with outcome assessments conducted at baseline (T0) and 1 day (T1), 7 days (T2), and 14 days (T3) of the intervention phase. Discussion The study’s findings will determine the potential of 40-Hz tACS to improve motor learning in stroke patients. Additionally, it will compare the effectiveness of multi-target and single-target approaches, shedding light on their respective improvement effects. Through the utilization of techniques such as TMS and MRI, the study aims to uncover the underlying brain mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic impact. Furthermore, the intervention has the potential to facilitate motor learning efficiency, thereby contributing to the advancement of future stroke rehabilitation treatment. Abstract Background Clinical characteristics of patients with pulmonary thromboembolism have been described in previous studies. Although very old patients with pulmonary thromboembolism are a special group based on comorbidities and age, they do not receive special attention. Objective This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics and mortality predictors among very old patients with pulmonary thromboembolism in a relatively large population. Design and participants The study included a total of 7438 patients from a national, multicenter, registry study, the China pUlmonary thromboembolism REgistry Study (CURES). Consecutive patients with acute pulmonary thromboembolism were enrolled and were divided into three groups. Comparisons were performed between these three groups in terms of clinical characteristics, comorbidities and in-hospital prognosis. Mortality predictors were analyzed in very old patients with pulmonary embolism. Key results In 7,438 patients with acute pulmonary thromboembolism, 609 patients aged equal to or greater than 80 years (male 354 (58.1%)). There were 2743 patients aged between 65 and 79 years (male 1313 (48%)) and 4095 patients aged younger than 65 years (male 2272 (55.5%)). Patients with advanced age had significantly more comorbidities and worse condition, however, some predisposing factors were more obvious in younger patients with pulmonary thromboembolism. PaO2

Escherichia coli is an important component of the normal bacterial community in humans and animals. However, in recent years, the pathogenicity of some virulent strains to the outside of the intestine has been confirmed in clinical medicine. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of cyaA gene knockout on the biological characteristics and pathogenicity of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli. In this study, ExPEC strain (XJ10) was isolated from the lung tissue of sheep with respiratory tract infection, and the mutation strain and complementary strain of cyaA gene were constructed. Real-time PCR analysis showed that expression levels of most genes related to carbon source utilization and adhesion invasion were down-regulated in the cyaA mutant compared to the wild type; Quantification of the number of colonies showed that cyaA mutation results in the number of adhesion and invasive to TC-1 cells colonies decreased compared with wild type; Finally, as the cyaA gene mutated, the value of the LD50 increased as compared to wild type, based on the LD50 calculation. Taken together, mutations in the cyaA gene reduce growth rates, resulting in down-regulation of the transcription levels of genes associated with carbon source utilization and adhesion invasion, and a marked reduction in virulence.

Abstract Primary cilia are microtubule-based organelles that play important roles in development and tissue homeostasis. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has long been recognized as a secreted cytokine in the pathogenesis of various human diseases, including cancer and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Unlike other cytokines, unique functional characteristics of intracellular MIF have emerged. In this study, we show that MIF is localized and formed a ring like structure at the proximal end of centrioles, where it regulates cilia biogenesis through affecting 1) the recruitment of TTBK2 to basal body and the removal of CP110 from mother centriole, 2) the accumulation of CEP290 at centriolar satellites, and 3) the trafficking of intraflagellar transport (IFT) related proteins. We also show that MIF functions as a novel transcriptional factor to regulate the expression of genes related to ciliogenesis via binding on the promotors of those genes. MIF also binds chromatin and regulates transcription of genes involved in diverse homeostatic signaling pathways. We identify phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase type 2 alpha (PIP4K2a) as an upstream regulator of MIF, which interacts with and phosphorylates MIF at S91 to increase its interaction with 14-3-3ζ, resulting in its nuclear translocation and transcription regulation. This study suggests that MIF is a key player in cilia biogenesis and a novel transcriptional regulator in homeostasis, which forward our understanding of how MIF is able to carry out several nonoverlapping functions.

Abstract Objective The exact mechanism and target molecules of liver fibrosis have remained largely elusive. Here, we investigated the role of long noncoding RNA Gm9866(lncRNA-Gm9866) on liver fibrosis. Methods The transcription of lncRNA-Gm9866 in activated cells and mouse fibrotic livers was determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The effects of lentivirus-mediated knockdown or overexpression of lncRNA-Gm9866 in liver fibrosis were examined in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis, cell samples validation, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) co-localization, RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP), actinomycin D test and Western blot (WB) were carried out to explore the potential mechanism of lncRNA-Gm9866. Results The expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), Collagen I (COL-1) and lncRNA-Gm9866 were significantly increased in tissues and cells. Overexpressing lncRNA-Gm9866 promoted the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Silencing lncRNA-Gm9866 inhibited the activation of HSCs and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ1) induced fibrosis. Overexpressing lncRNA-Gm9866 promoted hepatocytes (HCs) apoptosis and the expression of pro-fibrogenic genes, inhibited the proliferation and migration of HCs. Knockdown of lncRNA-Gm9866 inhibited the apoptosis of HCs, the expression of pro-fibrogenic genes, TGFβ1 induced fibrosis and the occurrence of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis, and promoted the proliferation and migration of HCs. Mechanistically, lncRNA-Gm9866 may directly bine with Fam98b. Silencing Fam98b in stably overexpressing lncRNA-Gm9866 cell lines reversed the increase of pro-fibrogenic genes and pro-apoptotic genes, fibrosis related pathway protein TGFβ1, Smad2/3, p-Smad2/3 and Notch3 induced by overexpressing lncRNA-Gm9866. Conclusions LncRNA-Gm9866 may regulate TGFβ/Smad and Notch pathways by targeting Fam98b to regulate liver fibrosis. LncRNA-Gm9866 may be a new target for diagnosis and treatment of liver fibrosis.

Abstract Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) are selectively active in ovarian cancer (OC) with homologous recombination (HR) deficiency (HRD) caused by mutations in BRCA1/2 and other DNA repair pathway members. We sought molecular targeted therapy that induce HRD in HR-proficient cells to induce synthetic lethality with PARPi and extend the utility of PARPi. Here, we demonstrate that lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) is an important regulator for OC. Importantly, genetic depletion or pharmacological inhibition of LSD1 induces HRD and sensitizes HR-proficient OC cells to PARPi in vitro and in multiple in vivo models. Mechanistically, LSD1 inhibition directly impairs transcription of BRCA1/2 and RAD51, three genes essential for HR, dependently of its canonical demethylase function. Collectively, our work indicates combination with LSD1 inhibitor could greatly expand the utility of PARPi to patients with HR-proficient tumor, warranting assessment in human clinical trials.

Systemic amyloidosis is a rare protein misfolding and deposition disorder leading to progressive organ failure. Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) with systemic amyloidosis as the main manifestation is even rarer. The patient in this study presented with recurrent diarrhea and had not been diagnosed in other hospitals on multiple occasions. Later, his diarrhea worsened and was accompanied by sunken edema of both lower limbs and dizziness. Renal biopsy showed deposits of PAS light-staining material in the glomeruli, interstitium, and small arteries, which stained positively with Congo red. Cardiac ultrasound showed interventricular septum thickening of 17 mm, right ventricular wall myocardial thickening of approximately 0.6 cm, and septal thickening of approximately 0.5 cm, considering myocardial amyloidosis. Electromyography showed abnormal peripheral nerve conduction. Lymphoplasmacytic cells were found in the bone marrow. Taken together, he was diagnosed with WM. He was treated with a BR (Bendamustine + Rituximab) regimen. After 6 courses, the patient’s discomfort was relieved, his weight gained 5 kg, the level of serum IgM and dFLC decreased, and cardiac and renal assessments were more relieved. The patient has been followed up for more than 1 month.

Abstract Nonfused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) are promising candidates for future commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their simple synthesis. Still, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of NFREA‐based OSCs have large room for improvement. In this work, by merging end group halogenation and side chain engineering, we developed four A–D–A'–D–A type NFREAs, which we refer to as EH‐4F, C4‐4F, EH‐4Cl, and C4‐4Cl. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction revealed that multiple intermolecular S···F interactions between cyclopentadithiophene and 5,6‐difluoro‐3‐(dicyanomethylene)indanone could cause an unfavorable dimer formation, leading to ineffective π–π stackings in EH‐4F and C4‐4F, whereas no such dimer was found in EH‐4Cl and C4‐4Cl after replacing with 5,6‐dichloro‐3‐(dicyanomethylene)indanone. Moreover, although the shorter n‐butyl side chain resulted in a closer molecular packing in C4‐4Cl, EH‐4Cl (2‐ethylhexyl substitution) with proper crystallinity exhibited enhanced face‐on orientation in thin film, which is favorable for vertical charge transport and further reducing charge recombination. As a result, a PCE of 13.0% is obtained for EH‐4Cl‐based OSC with a fill factor of 0.70. This work highlights the importance of molecular packing and orientation control toward future high‐performance A–D–A'–D–A type NFREAs.

ObjectThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of secondary immune thrombocytopenia in multiple sclerosis patients treated with alemtuzumab through a meta-analysis.MethodsWe searched databases including PubMed, Web of Science, OVID and EMBASE for studies reporting changes in platelet levels in MS patients treated with alemtuzumab from their inception until May 2023 and performed a meta-analysis. Information and data were screened and extracted by two researchers. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were established according to the PICOS principle. The obtained data were analyzed using the R software meta package and the quality assessment was conducted using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The causes of heterogeneity were analyzed using subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots and Egger test.ResultsA total of 15 studies were included, encompassing 1,729 multiple sclerosis patients. Meta-analysis of overall secondary ITP in the included studies yielded a pooled rate of 0.0243. The overall incidence of secondary autoimmune events was 0.2589. In addition, subgroup analysis was applied using study regions and study types. The results showed that the incidence rate of secondary ITP in Europe was about 0.0207, while the incidence of autoimmune events (AEs) was 0.2158. The incidence rate of secondary ITP and AEs in North America was significantly higher than in Europe, being 0.0352 and 0.2622. And the analysis showed that the incidence rates of secondary ITP and AEs in prospective studies were 0.0391 and 0.1771. Retrospective studies had an incidence rate of secondary ITP at 2.16, and an incidence rate of AEs at 0.2743.ConclusionThis study found that there was a certain incidence of Immune thrombocytopenia in multiple sclerosis patients after treatment with alemtuzumab. Alemtuzumab may have some interference with platelet levels, and the mechanism may be associated with Treg cells. But due to the absence of a control group in the included literature, we cannot determine the specific impact of Alemtuzumab on platelet levels in patients with MS. BackgroundTongxinluo capsule (TXLC) is a common drug for treating angina pectoris of coronary heart disease (CHD). In recent years, many systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) have reported the efficacy and safety of TXLC for improving angina symptoms in patients with CHD. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the existing SRs and MAs of TXLC in treating angina pectoris of CHD, summarize the evidence quality, and provide scientific evidence and recommendations.MethodsWe searched seven databases for relevant SRs/MAs published up to 1 June 2023. Two reviewers independently completed the literature retrieval, screening, and data extraction. We used A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2) to evaluate the methodological quality, the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS) to assess the risk of bias, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) to determine the strength of the evidence. RevMan 5.3 was used to synthesize data.ResultsWe identified 15 SRs/MAs, including 329 RCTs and 33,417 patients. According to the evaluation results of AMSTAR-2, only one SR was of high methodological quality, the others were very low. ROBIS assessment showed that one SR (6.67%) had a low risk, 3 SRs (20%) had an unclear risk, and 11 SRs (73.33%) had a high risk. We assessed 42 outcomes by the GRADE, 10 (23.81%) for moderate-quality evidence, 17 (40.48%) for low-quality evidence, and 15 (35.71%) for very-low-quality evidence. Abstract Background Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and progressive interstitial lung disease. Multiple research has revealed that the extracellular matrix (ECM) may be associated with the development and prognosis of IPF, however, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Methods We included GSE70866 dataset from the GEO database and established an ECM-related prognostic model utilizing LASSO, Random forest and Support vector machines algorithms. To compare immune cell infiltration levels between the high and low risk groups, we employed the ssGSEA algorithm. Enrichment analysis was conducted to explore pathway differences between the high-risk and low-risk groups. Finally, the model genes were validated using an external validation set consisting of IPF cases, as well as single-cell data analysis. Results Based on machine learning algorithms, we constructed an ECM-related risk model. IPF patients in the high-risk group had a worse overall survival rate than those in the low-risk group. The model’s AUC predictive values were 0.786, 0.767, and 0.768 for the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates, respectively. The validation cohort validated these findings, demonstrating our model’s effective prognostication. Chemokine-related pathways were enriched through enrichment analysis. Moreover, immune cell infiltration varied significantly between the two groups. Finally, the validation results indicate that the expression levels of all the model genes exhibited significant differential expression. Conclusions Based on CST6, PPBP, CSPG4, SEMA3B, LAMB2, SERPINB4 and CTF1, our study developed and validated an ECM-related risk model that accurately predicts the outcome of IPF patients.

Magnetosomes, synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), have been used in nano- and biotechnological applications, owing to their unique properties such as superparamagnetism, uniform size distribution, excellent bioavailability, and easily modifiable functional groups. In this review, we first discuss the mechanisms of magnetosome formation and describe various modification methods. Subsequently, we focus on presenting the biomedical advancements of bacterial magnetosomes in biomedical imaging, drug delivery, anticancer therapy, biosensor. Finally, we discuss future applications and challenges. This review summarizes the application of magnetosomes in the biomedical field, highlighting the latest advancements and exploring the future development of magnetosomes.

Quercus gilva is a precious timber tree species in middle subtropical China. In order to investigate the phenotypic diversity, phenotypic variation pattern and the major geographic and climatic factors influencing phenotypic variation of Q. gilva populations, 15 growth and leaf traits of 115 individuals from 14 natural populations were measured, and then the phenotypic diversity, variation pattern and the correlation between phenotypic variation and geographic and climatic factors were studied using nested analysis of variance, phenotypic differentiation coefficient, diversity index, correlation analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The results were as follows: (1) The average variation coefficient and the average Shannon-Wiener index of 15 phenotypic traits were 35.070% and 1.998, respectively. Variation coefficient and Shannon-Wiener index of 14 populations ranged from 14.94% (Dongkou) to 35.56% (Longshan) and from 1.127 (Songyang) to 1.980 (Changning), respectively. Abstract Background Stroke survivors have long-term upper limb impairment, which impacts the quality of life (QOL) and social reintegration, but there is lack of effective therapeutic strategies and novel technologies. Customized multi-muscle functional electrical stimulation (FES) based on the muscle synergy of healthy adults and robotic-assisted therapy (RAT) have been proved efficacy respectively. Synergy-based FES combined with RAT can be a novel and more effective therapy for upper limb recovery of stroke survivors from the perspective of synergistic enhancement. However, few studies have examined the effectiveness of combined synergy-based FES and RAT, especially for motor control evaluated by reach-to-grasp (RTG) movements. The main objective of the following research protocol is to evaluate the effectiveness and efficacy, as well as adoptability, of FES-RAT and FES or RAT rehabilitation program for upper limb function improvement after stroke. Methods This will be an assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial involving a 12-week intervention and a 6-month follow-up. Stratified randomization will be used to equally and randomly assign 162 stroke patients into the FES + conventional rehabilitation program (CRP) group, RAT + CRP group and FES-RAT + CRP group. Interventions will be provided in 5 sessions per week, with a total of 60 sessions. The primary outcome measurements will include the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and Biomechanical Assessment of RTG movements. The secondary outcome measurements will include quality of life and brain neuroplasticity assessments by MRI. Evaluations will be performed at five time points, including at baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks from the start of treatment, and 3 months and 6 months following the end of treatment. A two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures will be applied to examine the main effects of the group, the time factor and group-time interaction effects. Discussion The results of the study protocol will provide high quality evidence for integrated synergy-based FES and RAT, and synergy-based FES alone and guide the design of more effective treatment methods for stroke rehabilitation. Abstract Background The protozoan parasite Babesia microti that causes the zoonotic disease babesiosis resides in the erythrocytes of its mammalian host during its life-cycle. No effective vaccines are currently available to prevent Babesia microti infections. Methods We previously identified a highly seroactive antigen, named Bm8, as a B. microti conserved erythrocyte membrane-associated antigen, by high-throughput protein chip screening. Bioinformatic and phylogenetic analysis showed that this membrane-associated protein is conserved among apicomplexan hemoprotozoa, such as members of genera Babesia, Plasmodium and Theileria. We obtained the recombinant protein Bm8 (rBm8) by prokaryotic expression and purification. Results Immunofluorescence assays confirmed that Bm8 and its Plasmodium homolog were principally localized in the cytoplasm of the parasite. rBm8 protein was specifically recognized by the sera of mice infected with B. microti or P. berghei. Also, mice immunized with Bm8 polypeptide had a decreased parasite burden after B. microti or P. berghei infection. Conclusions Passive immunization with Bm8 antisera could protect mice against B. microti or P. berghei infection to a certain extent. These results lead us to hypothesize that the B. microti conserved erythrocyte membrane-associated protein Bm8 could serve as a novel broad-spectrum parasite vaccine candidate since it elicits a protective immune response against Babesiosis and Plasmodium infection. The canopy of perennial evergreen fruit trees in southern China has a unique Bidirectional Reflectance Factor (BRF) due to its complex multi-branch structure and density changes. This study aimed to address the lack of clarity regarding the changes in BRF of evergreen fruit trees in southern China. Litchi, a typical fruit tree in this region, was chosen as the subject for establishing a three-dimensional (3D) real structure model. The canopy BRF of litchi was simulated under different leaf components, illumination geometry, observed geometry, and leaf area index (LAI) using a 3D radiation transfer model. The corresponding changes in characteristics were subsequently analyzed. The findings indicate that the chlorophyll content and equivalent water thickness of leaves exert significant influences on canopy BRF, whereas the protein content exhibit relatively weak effects. Variation in illumination and observation geometry results in the displacement of hotspots, with the solar zenith angle and view zenith angle exerting significant influence on the BRF. As the LAI of the litchi orchard increases, the distribution of hotspots becomes more concentrated, and the differences in angle information are relatively smaller when observed from multiple angles. With the increase in LAI in litchi orchards, the BRF on the principal plane would be saturated, but observation at hotspots could alleviate this phenomenon. The above analysis provides a reference for quantitative inversion of vegetation parameters using remote sensing monitoring information of typical perennial evergreen fruit trees.

Ultrafine KAl(OH)2CO3 dry powder (UDWP), as a novel high-temperature-resistant ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agent, has garnered significant attention in the field of aviation fire protection. However, its development has been hindered by its hydrophilicity, which leads to hygroscopicity, and its tendency for re-ignition due to oil deposition. Therefore, this study employs perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) to modify the surface of UDWP, resulting in hydrophobic and oleophobic M-UDWP. The thermal stability and hydrophobicity of M-UDWP ensure its long-term stable storage in aircraft equipment compartments, thereby reducing aircraft maintenance costs. Additionally, its oleophobicity provides excellent anti-re-ignition performance, protecting aircraft power compartments from secondary fire damage. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicate that the PFDTMS modifier was successfully grafted onto KAl(OH)2CO3. Furthermore, M-UDWP exhibits a three-stage thermal decomposition process. The first-stage decomposition can be regarded as a single-step reaction, and the calculated kinetic parameters provide accurate predictions. Thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) results reveal that M-UDWP significantly produces H2O and CO2 during thermal decomposition, which is one of its core fire extinguishing mechanisms. For the combustion of #RP-3 and #RP-5 aviation kerosene, commonly found in aircraft engine nacelles, the extinguishing times required by M-UDWP are 243 ms and 224 ms, respectively, with minimum extinguishing concentrations (MEC) of 25.9 g/m3 and 23.4 g/m3, respectively. The study of M-UDWP’s thermal stability aids in understanding its storage stability under high-temperature conditions and its fire extinguishing mechanisms in fire zones. Moreover, the research findings suggest that M-UDWP has the potential to replace Halon 1301 in aircraft engine nacelles.

Rotavirus is a major causative agent of diarrhoea in children, infants, and young animals around the world. The associated zoonotic risk necessitates the serious consideration of the complete genetic information of rotavirus. A segmented genome makes rotavirus prone to rearrangement and the formation of a new viral strain. Monitoring the molecular epidemiology of rotavirus is essential for its prevention and control. The quantitative RT-PCR targeting the NSP5 gene was used to detect rotavirus group A (RVA) in pig faecal samples, and two pairs of universal primers and protocols were used for amplifying the G and P genotype. The genotyping and phylogenetic analysis of 11 genes were performed by RT-PCR and a basic bioinformatics method. A unique G4P[6] rotavirus strain, designated S2CF (RVA/Pig-tc/CHN/S2CF/2023/G4P[6]), was identified in one faecal sample from a piglet with severe diarrhoea in Guangdong, China. Whole genome sequencing and analysis suggested that the 11 segments of the S2CF strain showed a unique Wa-like genotype constellation and a typical porcine RVA genomic configuration of G4-P[6]-I1-R1-C1-M1-A8-N1-T1-E1-H1. Notably, 4 of the 11 gene segments (VP4, VP6, VP2, and NSP5) clustered consistently with human-like RVAs, suggesting independent human-to-porcine interspecies transmission. Moreover, a unique 344-nt duplicated sequence was identified for the first time in the untranslated region of NSP5. This study further reveals the genetic diversity and potential inter-species transmission of porcine rotavirus.
