Present and future climatic trends are expected to markedly alter water fluxes and stores in the hydrologic cycle. In addition, water demand continues to grow due to increased human use and a growing population. Sustainably managing water resources requires a thorough understanding of water storage and flow in natural, agricultural, and urban ecosystems. Measurements of stable isotopes of water (hydrogen and oxygen) in the water cycle (atmosphere, soils, plants, surface water, and groundwater) can provide information on the transport pathways, sourcing, dynamics, ages, and storage pools of water that is difficult to obtain with other techniques. However, the potential of these techniques for practical questions has not been fully exploited yet. Here, we outline the benefits and limitations of potential applications of stable isotope methods useful to water managers, farmers, and other stakeholders. We also describe several case studies demonstrating how stable isotopes of water can support water management decision-making. Finally, we propose a workflow that guides users through a sequence of decisions required to apply stable isotope methods to examples of water management issues. We call for ongoing dialogue and a stronger connection between water management stakeholders and water stable isotope practitioners to identify the most pressing issues and develop best-practice guidelines to apply these techniques.

Plastics pollution, persistent chemical contamination and inadequately treated wastewater are three key aspects that hinder access to safe and affordable water for all. We argue that a strong priority on pollution avoidance, research for remediation, and tighter regulation and monitoring must be implemented to make progress.

We assess the water budget of the Mahadayi river, an inter-state basin on India's west coast with a long-running dispute. We seek to answer the following question: What is the discharge at any given location along the Mahadayi river or its tributaries on any given day? After presenting the dispute and the decisions of the tribunal, we describe the modelling framework, which is able to simulate the high rainfall gradients in the neighbourhood of the ridge associated with the Sahyadris, the high discharge during the summer monsoon, the much weaker discharge following the monsoon, and the high abstraction during monsoon onset. The model is not designed to simulate the negligible dry-season discharge. The simulation yields the daily time series of discharge at any location along the Mahadayi or its tributaries. For the Kalasa nala, there is a significant impact of the permitted diversion in the northern part of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, but the impact on the Mahadayi discharge or the Mandovi estuary is less than the natural variability. The Bhandura diversion has a minor impact on the discharge at the Goa–Karnataka border. Based on the simulated water budget, we suggest possible solutions to resolve the dispute. The presence of trace elements such as lithium (Li) in water resources in the long term can endanger consumers' health. Several studies have been conducted on Li concentration in water sources; hence, this study attempted to retrieve studies using a systematic search. The search was conducted in Web of Sciences, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus databases from 1 January 2010 to 15 January 2023. Li concentration was meta-analyzed based on the type of water resources and countries subgroups in the random effects model (REM) statistical analysis. In addition, health risk assessment in different age groups was calculated using the target hazard quotient (THQ). This study included 76 papers with 157 data reports in our meta-analysis. The overall pooled concentration of Li was 5.374 (95 % CI: 5.261–5.487 μg/L). The pooled concentration of Li in groundwater (40.407 μg/L) was 14.53 times surface water (2.785 μg/L). The highest water Li content was attributed to Mexico (2,209.05 μg/L), Bolivia (1,444.05 μg/L), Iraq (1,350 μg/L), and Argentina (516.39 μg/L). At the same time, the lowest water Li content was associated with Morocco (1.20 μg/L), Spain (0.46 μg/L), and India (0.13 μg/L). THQ due to Li in water resources in consumers of Iraq, Mexico, South Africa, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Portugal, Malawi, South Korea, Nepal, South Korea, Argentina, and the USA was higher than 1 value. Therefore, continuous monitoring of Li concentration in water sources and reducing Li concentration, especially in groundwater water, using new water treatment processes in these countries are recommended. Raw Water Transfer (RWT) schemes move large volumes of freshwater between separate waterbodies to supply water as a specific commodity. Water is translocated by complex purpose-built networks of pipelines, tunnels and water supply canals. RWTs form hydrological connections between waterbodies across various spatial scales, and create a pathway of introduction and spread for a diverse range of invasive non-native species (INNS). Though occurring globally in large numbers, RWTs are not currently well represented by the standard pathway classification framework adopted by the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). At present, RWTs are included within the 'corridor' category, which denotes the natural spread of organisms to neighbouring regions through transport infrastructure i.e. navigable canals/artificial waterways. However, RWTs are not routes for vehicle transport, and species are translocated between often non-adjoining waterbodies by the intentional transfer of water, not via natural spread. We provide a background for the complex RWT pathway and evidence of INNS spread through RWT schemes globally, and explore several options for improved RWT classification within the CBD framework—we recommend that the current corridor category is modified slightly to accommodate the addition of RWTs as a distinct sub-category, as separate from a clearly defined 'navigable canal/artificial waterways' sub-category. Accurate classification will increase understanding and awareness of this high-risk pathway, and support much-needed insight into its distinct stakeholders and drivers. Further, delineating RWTs from navigable canals/artificial waterways will help to identify widespread opportunities for pathway management and policy development, in addition to supporting more accurate future assessments of the risks and economic costs of the corridor pathway category. In this study, we documented and compared similarities of the alien plant species richness between South Africa represented by three provinces: Free State (FS), Eastern Cape (EC), and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and Lesotho—an important water source area for southern Africa. We tested the prediction that alien plant species in Lesotho are a subset of South Africa’s species partly because of the short geographical distances between the provinces and Lesotho, and environmental similarity. Overall, 7124 records containing 1040 individual alien plant species belonging to 147 families were documented. South Africa had significantly greater alien plant species records than Lesotho. Of 147 plant families, 44 were represented in both countries, and 101 families did not occur in Lesotho. Against the study prediction, the Geraniaceae and Orobanchaceae families occurred in Lesotho but not in three provinces. KwaZulu-Natal had a significantly greater number of species than Lesotho but not the other provinces, and 49% of species in three provinces originated from the Americas (i.e. South and North), Europe, and Asia. A similar pattern was observed in Lesotho. Woody and herbaceous alien plants, habitat transformers, dominated three provinces, while herbaceous species dominated Lesotho. The 62% of 1040 alien species were not listed in the South African national regulations, indicating their negative impacts are also unknown in the study region. Plant nurseries were a dominant species dispersal pathway in South Africa, while home gardens were prominent in Lesotho. We conclude that invasive plant species constitute a future threat to the Lesotho Drakensberg highlands water catchments and recommend prioritising their management and improving cross-border biosecurity between Lesotho and South Africa. With the impact of climate change in recent years, the instability of precipitation and the increase of evaporation have made water resources in Shaanxi Province more and more stressed. How to maintain stable economic development while ensuring the sustainable development of agriculture within the limited water resources has become an important issue facing Shaanxi Province. This paper analyzes the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of maize irrigation water requirement in Shaanxi Province based on meteorological data and obtains the ideal irrigation water requirement. However, considering the agricultural water scarcity issue in this region, this paper establishes different water scarcity scenarios, adopts the Jensen model to construct an objective function aimed at minimizing crop yield reduction, and solves it using a genetic algorithm to obtain the optimized maize irrigation scheduling under different water scarcity scenarios. The results analysis indicates the following: (1) The effective rainfall in Shaanxi Province from 1960 to 2019 shows a slight upward trend, while the maize water requirement and maize irrigation water requirement shows a downward trend. (2) The spatial distribution of maize irrigation water requirement in Shaanxi Province decreases gradually from north to south. High-value areas are mainly distributed in the northern regions of Yulin City and Yan'an City in Shanbei. Low-value areas are distributed in Ankang City in Shannan. (3) In the face of water scarcity, spring maize should ensure water use during the middle growth period, fast development period, and initial growth periods. Under the same water scarcity conditions, the yield reduction rate is the highest in Guanzhong, followed by the Shannan, and the lowest in Shanbei. This paper aims to provide a scientific and reasonable optimization plan for maize irrigation in Shaanxi Province by calculating and analyzing the maize irrigation water requirement in Shaanxi Province, combined with optimization tools such as genetic algorithms, to address the challenges brought by water resource constraints. In the context of planning and construction of the new capital city of Indonesia, referred to as Ibu Kota Negara (IKN), this article addresses the spatial risks and opportunities of rainwater resources in the area where IKN is planned. The article relies on an inventory of various physical data, which were used to derive a flood susceptibility map, as well as rainfall data derived from public and open sources. The geospatial study drew on geospatial software (ArcGIS Pro, 2.1.) and the Google Earth Engine platform (GEE). After this analysis, we followed a management design, which took IPCC climate change scenarios into account. The results demonstrated that the southern coast has higher precipitation than the northern coast in the IKN area. To enhance the efficacy of rainwater management planning, a grid is proposed to mitigate the flood risk and to harvest rainwater. Although rainwater varies throughout the IKN area, and may vary even more with different climate change predictions, it is possible to capture rainwater and create a system to reduce reliance on traditional water sources, alleviate stormwater runoff and mitigate the impact of urban flooding. While IKN will be developed by both regulated planning and other population-driven developments, monitoring and reflecting on existing plans will still be necessary to make IKN sufficiently resilient and sustainable. In order to solve the issue of "bottleneck" constraints on water resources utilization in the irrigation area of the Renmin Shengli Canal, an optimal allocation model of water resources in irrigation areas based on rigid water resources constraints was innovatively built, and an efficient improved non-dominated genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) was introduced to solve the issue, and 100 sets of optimal allocation schemes covering the planning year of 2035 and adapting to different water frequencies were generated. The comprehensive weight calculation method combining analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and CRITIC weight method was adopted, and the TOPSIS method was used to sort and optimize the schemes, and the optimal allocation scheme was selected from many feasible schemes, which provided references for the conservation and intensive utilization of water resources in the Renmin Shengli Canal irrigation area, and helped to realize the sustainable use of water resources. The article examines the legal problems and prospects of ensuring the irrigation of agricultural land in conditions of a lack of traditional water resources. Modern hydromelioration reform in the form in which it is currently implemented is not a panacea. It mostly solves property and administrativefunctional issues, but leaves a call for attention to environmental and natural resource problems. In view of the tendency to decrease the quantity and quality of water in the country, the question arises about the prospects of irrigation under such conditions. In recent decades, there has been a constant search for innovative solutions of not only technological, but also legal nature in the world for solving the complex problems of distributing limited resources and providing agriculture with vital moisture for maintaining food security. The objective problem of the lack of water suitable for irrigation against the background of the rapid growth of such needs is getting worse every year and in the long run can endanger the food security of the country. World experience demonstrates the approbation of various approaches to solving the problem of sufficient irrigation. According to the main way of achieving the goal, these approaches are presented by us in the form of three groups: 1) use of alternative sources of water resources (use of underground water, treated wastewater, desalinated salt water); 2) application of alternative irrigation technologies (modernization of irrigation systems; use of micro-irrigation); 3) use of alternative crops (voluntary and mandatory transition). Having analyzed the foreign and domestic experience of the legal regulation of selected methods of solving the problem of water shortage for irrigation, it is possible to trace some general trends: a) self-removal of the state from the implementation of large-scale irrigation projects, the need for which is generated by global environmental challenges; b) slow ecological transformation of legislation regulating agricultural irrigation; c) the predominance of separate legal norms and separate legal mechanisms aimed at regulating alternative irrigation, and the lack of comprehensive regulatory and legal support for the reconstruction of the irrigation system taking into account objective environmental problems. The urgency of understanding the intricate input–output relationships of the hydrologic cycle is amplified by the accelerating climate change impacts in mountain environments. This study focuses on optimising water resource management of a dammed valley in the Central Alps (Northern Italy). The research aims to integrate radar data and precipitation interpolation techniques (TIN, Copula, cumulative distribution function; CDF techniques, inverse distance weighting; IDW, thin plate spline; TPS, ordinary kriging; OK and detrended kriging; DK) into a semi‐distributed hydrologic model, by utilising hourly precipitation data from 22 rain gauges and a composite weather radar product spanning 2010–2020. Two main objectives were pursued: (i) to develop and evaluate various radar precipitation correction methods against a benchmark dataset and (ii) to calibrate and assess the performance of the GEOFrame hydrologic model forced with corrected precipitation input. Point‐based and spatial correction approaches were evaluated against ground measurements through leave‐one‐out tests. The former derives dependence functions between the biased radar series and those of the closest three rain gauges to the target point applying a triangular irregular network. The latter combines deterministic and geospatial interpolations to the rain gauge/radar residuals to derive a corrected surface by incorporating radar values as trends. Precipitation series exceeding the composite scaled score of the benchmark dataset were used as input for hydrologic modelling. The spatial method combining radar values with ordinary kriging provided the best results for both correction and modelling (hourly KGE > 0.75). The spatial approaches proved easier to apply than the point‐based methods. In addition, correcting precipitation significantly improved low‐flow simulation from negative hourly lnNSE to values greater than 0.25. As a further step, given the overall good performance of the spatial methods, they could be used operationally as an ensemble to analyse management scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Brazil, agriculture consumes most of the available freshwater, especially in the Cerrado biome, where the rain cycle is marked by long periods of drought. This study, conducted at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) Research Corporation unit in Santo Antônio de Goiás, Goiás, Brazil, estimated evapotranspiration (ET) in different crops and soil cover. Using multispectral unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, Sentinel satellite data, weather station information, and towers employing the eddy covariance method, we applied the "Simple Algorithm for Evapotranspiration Retrieving" (SAFER) to calculate ET in common bean, pasture, and semideciduous seasonal forest areas. The results showed a good agreement between UAV and satellite data, with R2 = 0.84, also validated with flow towers by the eddy covariance method. UAV-based ET was observed to correspond well to tower (EC) during full vegetative development of beans but is underestimated at the beginning of planting and in the final periods of plant senescence, due to the influence of soil or straw cover. These findings contribute to a better understanding of water dynamics in the system and to enhancing sustainable agricultural practices. This method, adapted for multispectral aerial imaging, can be applied flexibly and on-demand, in different contexts and ground cover. The study highlights the importance of integrated agricultural practices for better management of water resources and preservation of the Cerrado in balance with cultivation areas. In this study, we visualize and analyze the literature on the Brahmaputra river using a spectral clustering algorithm, tracking research trends over time. We found that the focus of research on the Brahmaputra has changed over time in the last decade, with a shift from geology to hydrology and geochemistry and a rapid growth in climate change research in recent years. In the future, potential hot topics may be "water resource management" and other topics related to transboundary water resource management and cooperation. At the same time, this study also analyzes in detail the keywords and clusters "geohydrology" and "ecological risk and sustainable development", among other topics. We believe that future research should carefully consider the potential effects of transdisciplinary research trends. For instance, it is urgent that transborder governance and management regimes be renovated through joint efforts and cross-border effective actions carried out by multifaceted and multi-scalar agencies along this river. The virtual water strategy (VWS) is an effective tool to balance regional water resource endowments and guarantee water supply security. However, because of self‐interested games around VWS (human decision bias), there is a need for methods to maintain reliable cooperation between governments, virtual water (VW) enterprises and research institutions. This study builds a multi‐agent evolutionary game model to analyse the relationship of players and their impacts on VWS through changing decision mechanisms and the paths to enhance their confidence in cooperation. Considering differences in initial willingness to cooperate and changing factors affecting payoffs, an evolutionary game can produce changing stable equilibriums or stable cooperations, even if some players are reluctant to cooperate. Therefore, to promote the development of VWS, a multistep support mechanism can be built for the VW industry, which fosters model enterprises and optimizes the cooperation framework to stimulate research innovations at scientific institutions. Water scarcity is becoming a crisis and a significant threat to economic and agricultural development. In order to achieve long-term sustainability, it is suggested that local government should concentrate on evaluating the water resources' value with a combination of ecological, financial, and societal aspects. Hence, this paper's purpose is to devise an all-encompassing approach for evaluating the value of water resources, thereby providing a robust framework for their assessment. Firstly, a water quality, water quantity, and socioeconomic evaluation indicator system are established for Mashhad plain from 2016 to 2018. Subsequently, a fuzzy index was developed to measure the interrelationships and connections among natural, economic, and social systems, thereby enabling the determination of the value associated with water resources. This study's innovation is that each factor influencing this value was appraised utilizing the fuzzy approach. The water quality index shows poor to very poor fuzzy quality of water in all three years. Also, the water quantity index results show that variable's critical range. Also, based on the fuzzy water quantity index, the water quantity of Mashhad plain is in the critical range. The socioeconomic status assessment model results also showed that the Mashhad plain area has a good to moderate socioeconomic status. The statistics revealed that the valuation of water resources in the Mashhad plain exhibited values of 0.391, 0.399, and 0.416 during the years 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. In the era of climate change, the correlation between climate, food security, and water resources is profoundly influenced by microbial ecosystems. This review explores the important role of these often-overlooked microorganisms in maintaining the delicate balance required for sustainable agriculture and clean water availability. Microbes, though minuscule, orchestrate vital processes shaping nutrient cycling, soil health, and ecosystem functionality in both terrestrial and aquatic domains. As climate shifts occur, these adaptable microbes adjust, affecting ecosystem dynamics. Climate-smart agriculture harnesses microbial partnerships for soil carbon sequestration and stress mitigation, safeguarding the food supply. Microbes support crop productivity and resilience while also managing pests and diseases in changing climates. Additionally, they contribute to water purification and quality stabilization through water treatment and biofilms, ensuring clean water resources. Microbial diversity acts as a buffer against climate-induced disruptions, underlining their role in sustaining ecosystem stability. Integrating microbial approaches into policies and practices becomes crucial for climate adaptation, paving the way for sustainable agriculture and water management. Novel microbial technologies hold promise in addressing climate-food-water challenges, while collaborative research remains essential for innovative solutions at this critical interface of science and policy. The evaluation of sustainable water resources' utilization capacity in the Huangshui Basin is essential for effective management and development in the water-scarce regions of northwest China. This research provides valuable insights into the basin's potential capacity for sustainable water resource use by developing a comprehensive evaluation index that addresses the following three critical aspects: climate factors, water resource systems, and socio-economic conditions. The evaluation is conducted using a dual method, as follows: the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model and the ELECTRE III evaluation method. The results indicate that the Huangshui Basin's water resources, as a whole, exhibit a medium sustainable utilization capacity. Climatic factors and socio-economic characteristics are the main factors affecting the sustainable utilization of water resources in the Huangshui Basin. Remarkably, both methods yield consistent results, indicating that the overall sustainable utilization capacity of the Huangshui Basin's water resources is medium. Climatic factors and socio-economic characteristics are identified as the primary aspects influencing the sustainable utilization of water resources in the basin. Based on these findings, recommendations such as enhancing the introduction of external water resources, improving water resources' management, and implementing comprehensive remediation efforts can help to elevate the level of sustainable water use. This research not only contributes to a deeper understanding of the basin's water resources' dynamics, but also serves as an important reference for informed decision making regarding sustainable utilization in the Huangshui Basin. Droughts have a significant impact on surface water resources, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Computational and data handling limitations have constrained previous time-series analyses. However, advances in cloud computing services and remote sensing technology allow for a more detailed examination. This study integrates multi-source satellite-derived data with a cloud computing platform to assess the impact of long-term drought on surface water and water balance in Iran from 2000 to 2021. Given the varying effects of drought on highlands and lowlands, the analysis was conducted at three levels: the entire country, the highlands, and the lowlands. The results of this study reveal imbalances between water balance from 2000 to 2021, with notable disparities observed during 2000–2007, 2009–2014, and 2016–2019. The results also show varying drought trends (e.g., −1.22 in 2000 and −0.73 in 2021), with severe conditions captured in 2008 (SPI: −1.92). Additionally, our analysis illustrated that lowlands were more impacted by droughts compared to highlands. Long-term drought and permanent surface water had correlation values of 0.33 across the country, 0.33 in the highlands, and 0.31 in the lowlands. For seasonal surface water, coefficients were 0.18 for the entire country, 0.16 for the highlands, and 0.18 for the lowlands. Overall, long-term drought had minimal effect on reducing surface water. To understand and solve some problems in hydrology and water resources, like plan management, operation management, environmental protection, natural balance, and so on, it is useful to look into how climate change affects these areas. Both in theory and in real life. Climate change is likely to become a growing concern for water professionals in Morocco, as in all regions of the world. The Tensift basin, one of the largest in Morocco, is already suffering from the problem of dwindling water resources. Combined with the risk of a reduction in these resources as a result of climate change, this problem calls for new thinking in terms of socio-economic development guidelines and strategies. The aim of this work is to study the relationship between water resources and climate change in the case of the Tensift basin, by exploring water resources, climate change and related mechanisms, based on data from the Tensift Water Basin Agency. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and Sunspot Numbers (SSN) have long been recognized as key indicators of precipitation variability in various regions across the world. Understanding the influence of SOI and SSN on precipitation is crucial for effective water resource management, particularly in areas dependent on rainfall for their water supply. This study aimed at examining influences of SOI and SSN on precipitation variability in the highlands of Lesotho, a region that is particularly a source of country's income and hydro energy. Key findings of this study showed a wide range of variability in SOI (M = -1,002; SD = 10,514) and SSN (M = 73,778; SD = 66,745) as well as in the dam precipitation measurements. A Mood test indicated a statistically significant difference in precipitation across the selected weather stations (U(3) = 9.685, p = 0.021). The Pettitt's test for homogeneity showed no significant difference in the precipitation data for the four weather stations. The Dickey-Fuller test results showed strong evidence of stationarity in the precipitation data for the four stations. The Mann Kendall trend test showed a statistically significant trend in the SSN data (Kendall's tau = -0.241, two-tailed p-value = or less than 0.0001) but not in the other data sets. The correlation analysis showed a weak positive relationship between SOI and precipitation in the dams (r = 0.083, p = 0.086 for Katse dam and r = 0.070, p = 0.146 for Mohale dam), while SSN had a strong negative correlation with precipitation in the dams (r = -0.025, p = 0.604). These results suggest that SOI and SSN play a significant role in the precipitation patterns in the dams and further studies are needed to explore their full extent and implications for water resources management. This study provides evidence of the significant influence of SOI and SSN on precipitation variability in the highlands of Lesotho, with a weak positive relationship between SOI and precipitation and a strong negative relationship between SSN and precipitation. This article examines the impact of climate change on the hydrometeorological indicators of some lakes and reservoirs in the Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions. Two meteorological variables' annual and seasonal trends at three weather stations in 1986–2023 were analyzed. The non-parametric Mann–Kendall and Sen's slope methods were used to determine the presence of a positive or negative trend in weather data and their statistical significance. Hydrometric indicators were studied using the ArcGIS 10.8 program from 1995 to 2023. The results indicate an increasing average spring air temperature, with an annual rise of 0.08–0.09 °C. A significant trend in increasing average annual precipitation was observed in Saumalkol, with a rise of 4.7 mm per year. In contrast, no significant trends were found in the annual and seasonal precipitation data for Sergeyevka. It was also found that the area of Lake Saumalkol increased by 1.6% due to a rise in annual precipitation. This article provides a brief analysis of the water resources of Kalmykia in relation to the history of the fishing industry in the region in the lower reaches of the Volga and mainly in the Caspian region. Aquatic biological resources, especially fish, play a significant social and economic role among all the natural resources of our country. In the modern period, the fishing industry still plays a huge role in the development of the national economy of the Russian Federation. The GDP of Russia and the GRP of the subjects of the Federation, food security of the country, social well-being of our citizens depend on how the Russian fishing industry will develop as a whole and in its regions, since fish products are an important and necessary component of healthy nutrition and human life. The purpose of the article is to show the complex process of the emergence and development of the fishing industry of the Kalmyk Autonomous Region using the example of Kalmykrybtrest in the 1920s. In the modern period of development of the country’s market economy, the study of the historical experience of the emergence and development of the fishing industry of Kalmykia in the context of the new economic policy is very relevant from the point of view of the organization of the fishing business and management methods. The use of historical and problemchronological methods in the work allowed us to highlight the history of the formation of the fishing industry of Kalmykia in the first decade of Soviet power, to show the features of its development. The article is based on various sources, mainly on archival materials and published works on the history of the fishing industry of the Kalmyk Autonomous Region. The focus of the study is the study and analysis of party and state decisions of the center, the Kalmyk Autonomous Region and the Astrakhan province in the 1920s, aimed at the territorial definition of fisheries and the search for optimal ways of developing the fishing industry of the steppe region. One of the timely and correct decisions of the federal and regional authorities was the organization in 1923 of the Kalmrybaktrest, whose activities are thoroughly discussed in this article.

The lack of planning and feasibility of controlling actions over land use and land cover lead to relationship problems between the support capacity that environmental systems present and their current use. The goal of this study is to figure out how much land can be used based on its natural and physical features and to find problems that come up because of the heavy use in the Formoso River watershed. It is one of the most recognized Brazilian watersheds, due to its turistic, karst, and environmental characteristics. The methodology consists in handling and generating data in a GIS environment by performing a synthesis map, as well as adopting geoprocessing criteria and techniques in the field to validate the collected data. The results indicate that the watershed presents large areas without conflicts due to its numerous conservation units. However, major conflicts are identified in other areas, affecting the balance and dynamics of the landscape and its water resources. Such conflicts arise because soybean crops advance in fragile and karst areas. The highest concentration of confit is only 1.61%, particularly near the Formoso River marsh. Therefore, the present work considers a methodology that assesses the capacity of use through a method that has produced a summary document that is applicable and compatible with the karst system.

Agricultural water management is increasingly prioritized throughout the world as producers are tasked with meeting growing crop demand while also managing environmental resources more sustainably. Likewise, agriculture is increasingly modifying the terrestrial water cycle. In response to these dynamics, the informal research discipline of agrohydrology continues to grow, fueled by a new era of rapidly evolving research tools and big data availability. While many researchers are actively invested in agrohydrology as a research topic, there remains a gap in formalizing this valuable discipline. This article aims to: (a) identify key research themes in agrohydrology, (b) conceptualize future research topics within each theme, and (c) estimate a timeframe before topics become pressing (i.e., before a topic becomes a limiting factor in advancing water management in an agricultural context). This commentary is meant to guide the trajectory of an evolving discipline of agrohydrology, the practice of agricultural water management at multiple nested scales, and the conversation of the invested public.

Abstract Quarrying of rock aggregates generates produced water that, if not handled properly will be a source of pollution for nearby water bodies, thus affecting the chemistry of the water. This study examined the chemistry, impact of quarrying activities on water resources and the health consequences/risks posed by ingestion of the water by humans in the Akamkpa quarry region in southeastern Nigeria. Thirty (30) water samples consisting of pond water, stream water, hand dug wells, and borehole samples were collected and analyzed for their physicochemical parameters using standard methods. The results obtained from the analyses indicated that the water was moderately acidic, fresh, and not salty, with many parameters below the recommended standards with Ca2+, and HCO3 − being the dominant ions present in the water resources. Rock weathering processes including silicate weathering as illustrated by hydrochemical facies, cross plots, and Gibbs diagrams are the dominant mechanisms influencing the quality and major ions chemistry of the water resources with minor contributions from dissolution, anthropogenic activities, and ion exchange. Ca-Mg-SO4-Cl and Na–K-HCO3 − are the most important water types. Although the water quality index shows that the water is suitable for human use and irrigation, the mean values of As, Cd, Pb, and Se are above the acceptable limits. Additionally, the calculated contamination factor revealed the water resources are moderate to highly contaminated by As, Cd, Cr, Mo, Pb, Sb, and Se, and are therefore unsuitable for consumption with regards to these parameters. However, the residual sodium carbonate and water hazard index (WHI) values showed that 38% to 90% of sites in the quarry area were unsuitable for cultivation, 10–30% were in the low to medium impact category, and 60% were classified as risky and are from high to very high impact category. A non-cancer study of inhabitants living in the vicinity of the quarry area indicated that 6.7% of the sites have values greater than one, indicating that it may endanger the health of the people. Therefore, constant monitoring of the water quality is recommended as long-term use of contaminated water can harm humans, plants, and soils.

The relevance of the work is determined by the necessity of quantitative assessment of the risks of water resources changes occurring in the early 21st century due to the greenhouse effect and corresponding climate changes. To evaluate climate risks the authors used a probabilistic approach which involves multiplying the indicator of water resource reduction by the probability of such event occurrence. Reduction of water resources caused by warming characterizes their "depletion". The study utilized the results of calculations of the average long-term annual "climate" runoff, determined through the "climate-runoff" model based on meteorological data of the averaged model trajectory of the EURO-CORDEX project for the climate change scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. The calculation period extends from 2021 to 2050, while the baseline period continues from the beginning of observations until 1989. The comparison of the calculated climatic runoff and the baseline runoff was performed across meteorological stations. The assessment of the changes was carried out by calculating the relative deviation between the baseline and calculated runoff values. The probability of the "depletion" stage for water resources was determined as the ratio of the number of meteorological stations (grid nodes) where changes reached certain magnitudes to the total number of stations considered. The threshold indicators for the degree of depletion of water resources included changes exceeding 10% (statistically significant changes in water resources), 50% (water resources destruction), and 70% (irreversible destruction of water resources). The objective of the study consists in developing criteria for calculating climate risks and establishing the risks of formation of a tense, critical, and catastrophic state of water resources, taking Ukraine as an example. A detailed examination of the intervals of changes in water resources showed that the highest risk of their depletion over the period from 2020 to 2050 will be observed in the range from -20 to -40% (tense state) for the RCP4.5 scenario and from -30 to -60% (tense state) for the RCP8.5 scenario. It was established that the climate risks of depletion and irreversible depletion of water resources for the territory of Ukraine from 2020 to 2050 remain quite small, which is confirmed by the low probability of their occurrence. However, the risk values increase by 1.5 to 2.0 times for the RCP8.5 scenario compared to the RCP4.5 scenario. Additionally, for calculating the climate risks, it was proposed to use a relative area subject to depletion as an indirect indicator of losses (a larger area implies higher costs of restoration). This approach allowed for having more differentiated risk assessments. The developed methodology for assessing the climate risks of water resources depletion in the context of global warming can be applied for various models and countries.

This study addresses the pivotal challenge of water resource allocation in urban environments by introducing a novel approach – a multi-objective chance-constrained fuzzy interval linear programming model integrated with principal component analysis (PCA). This innovative model aims to alleviate subjectivity in urban water management processes, particularly in adjusting water demands across various sectors. The proposed model incorporates correlation analysis to identify dimensionality-reducing factors of multitarget components, determining the proportion of each target component relative to the total components. Fuzzy sets are applied to irrigation water resource allocation quantity, segmented into six levels of fuzzy membership to analyze the stochasticity of water supply. Results demonstrate the model's efficacy, revealing that variations in risk probabilities impact water supply, necessitating positive water management strategies to enhance agricultural efficiency and negative strategies to mitigate the risk of inadequate water supply. Key findings emphasize the significance of agricultural water availability and the structure of irrigation water use in optimal resource allocation. Importantly, the study showcases the enhanced precision achieved through the proposed multi-objective chance-constrained fuzzy interval linear programming with PCA, thereby refining the optimization outcomes for water management under multifaceted objectives. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Jordan is among the most water-scarce countries in the world. The scarcity of water resources in Jordan is driving the development and advances of non-conventional water techniques that enable integrated management of water resources in addressing water scarcity challenges and promoting sustainable water use. Water harvesting of rainwater and fog techniques is one of the viable solutions to mitigate the water scarcity effects in Jordan. This study aimed to evaluate the quantity of rainwater and fog collected through the utilization of solar panels, while also conducting a feasibility analysis on the economic and environmental aspects of employing solar panels for rainwater and fog harvesting in a solar farm situated in Jordan.METHODS: In the present study, an in-situ experiment is conducted to investigate rainwater and fog harvesting from solar panels' surfaces that are widely spread in Jordan. The solar farm situated in Hai Al Sahabah, south of Amman, Jordan, incorporates an experimental arrangement that involves the installation of gutters, pipes, and water tanks beneath two solar panel samples. These panels have a total area of 4 square meters and will be monitored for a duration of 60 days.FINDING: The results of the experiment show that the total quantity of the harvested rainwater using two solar panels was 444 liters ranging from 0.8 liters per day to 117.66 liters per day, and the total harvested fog quantity was 28 liters ranging from 0.25 liters per day to 9.75 liters per day. The multilinear regression technique was employed to establish a correlation between the amount of harvested water and the crucial factors of wind direction, wind speed, relative humidity, and temperature at the solar farm. The analysis of the findings revealed a significant relationship between these variables. These relationships can be generalized to provide an estimation for the quantity of rainwater and fog harvesting in other locations. The quantity of harvested rainwater was primarily influenced by wind speed and direction, the quantity of harvested fog was mainly affected by relative humidity and temperature. The current study aims to analyze and deliberate on the collected amounts of water obtained through rainwater and fog harvesting from solar panels. The viability of implementing the method of rainwater and fog harvesting from solar panels will be examined in terms of economic and environmental factors.CONCLUSIONS: The quantity of rainwater gathered in this research with just two solar panels shows great potential for widespread use as a supplementary water supply. This method of rainwater and fog harvesting can be effectively applied to solar power plants which are widely spread in Jordan for use in solar panel cleaning, agriculture, groundwater recharge, and reducing stormwater discharge to assess and manage the risk of environmental damage. Rainwater and fog harvesting systems offer a higher level of efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to other methods, especially when seamlessly integrated into the infrastructure of solar power plants. The benefits of solar panels by producing clean energy are not negotiable but combining energy production with water harvesting in solar power plants would offer even more advantages in enhancing the global environmental situation.

Background Excess nitrogen (N) loading to coastal ecosystems impairs estuarine water quality. Land management decisions made within estuarine watersheds have a direct impact on downstream N delivery. Natural features within watersheds can act as landscape sinks for N, such as wetlands, streams and ponds that transform dissolved N into gaseous N, effectively removing it from the aquatic system. Identifying and evaluating these landscape sinks and their spatial relationship to N sources can help managers understand the effects of alternative decisions on downstream resources. Methods The N-Sink approach uses widely available GIS data to identify landscape sinks within HUC-12 (or larger) catchments, estimate their N removal potential and map the effect of those sinks on N movement through the catchment. Static maps are produced to visualize N removal efficiency, transport and delivery, the latter in the form of an index. The R package nsink was developed to facilitate data acquisition, processing and visualization. Results nsink creates static maps for a specific HUC-12, or users can visit the University of Connecticut website to explore previously mapped areas. Users can investigate specific flowpaths interactively by clicking on any location within the catchment. A flowpath is generated with a table describing N removal along each segment. We describe the motivation behind developing nsink, discuss implementation in R, and present two use case examples. nsink is available from https://github.com/USEPA/nsink. Conclusions N-Sink is a decision support tool created for local decision-makers and NGOs to facilitate better understanding of the relationship between land use and downstream N delivery. Local decision-makers that have prioritized N mitigation in their long-term planning can use nsink to better understand the potential impact of proposed development projects, zoning variances, and land acquisition or restoration. nsink also allows resource economists to investigate the tradeoffs among different, often costly, N reduction strategies.

This study investigated the variability and trends in 115 years (1909–2023) of daily precipitation observed at three hydrometeorological stations in southern (Kaisaniemi), central (Kajaani), and northern (Sodankylä) Finland. We also identified the most significant climate teleconnections influencing daily precipitation variability at these three stations during the period 1951–2023. The daily precipitation records were primarily classified into six grades, including very light (≤1 mm), light (1–≤5 mm), moderate (5–≤10 mm), heavy (10–≤15 mm), very heavy (15–≤20 mm), and extreme (>20 mm). On average, the most intense daily precipitation was determined at the Kaisaniemi station in southern Finland. At this station, however, very light and light precipitation showed the lowest frequency, but other graded daily precipitation events were the most frequent. At all three stations, the intensity of very light precipitation significantly declined during the past 115 years, while its frequency increased. The highest rates of such decreases and increases in the intensity and frequency of very light daily precipitation were found at the Sodankylä stations in northern Finland, respectively, but the lowest rates were at the Kaisaniemi station in the south. At the Kajaani station in central Finland, the intensity of light precipitation decreased, but very heavy precipitation intensified. At this station, however, the number of both moderate and heavy precipitation events increased over time. Finally, historical variations in both the intensity and frequency of graded daily precipitation events in Finland showed significant relationships with different climate teleconnections, particularly the Scandinavia (SCAND) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) patterns. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a critical component of the national water network, with the West Route construction serving as a crucial measure to alleviate water resources shortages in northwestern and northern China. The water resources pattern in the diversion and receiving areas of the West Route under climate change directly affects the planning, construction and operational strategies of the project. Based on historical observed hydro-climatic data and future climate model scenarios projections, impact of climate change on the water resources in the diversion and receiving areas of the West Route was assessed by employing the statistical analysis and hydrological modeling method. The results indicate that a) from 1961 to 2020, climatic conditions in the water diversion and receiving areas of the West Route are characterized by a warming and humidifying trend, with a slight increase in runoff in the diversion area and a significant decrease in runoff in the receiving area. b) In the medium-term future (2035) and long-term future (2050), temperatures in both the diversion and receiving areas are projected to rise significantly, with precipitation showing a non-significant increase. Runoff in the diversion area is expeс- ted to increase by 1.42% and 2.08% for the medium-term and long-term futures respectively, compared with the baseline period (1961- 2000), while runoff in the receiving area is projected to decrease by 1.02% and 0.28% respectively. c) Under future climate change scenarios, the annual runoff in the water transfer area is relatively stable and can meet the demand for water transfer, while the annual runoff in the receiving area will slightly decrease, and the demand for inter-basin water transfer will increase. In order to ensure the long-term stable operation of the West Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion project, it is suggested to strengthen the uncertainty research of climate change and its impact, and formulate scientific and reasonable countermeasures to cope with the challenge of possible water shortage in the future. In the current period when climate change begins to reshape the world and its people, Türkiye is also affected by this change both in terms of climate and society. Due to both political and natural reasons, Türkiye has been exposed to intense immigration in recent years. The country, which was only a transit route in the past, has now become the final destination of migration. Türkiye, which has a naturally growing population structure, has had another sudden growth factor brought about by immigration. Accordingly, Türkiye's natural resources that will sustain life and economic activity have come under increasing pressure. These resources include water resources. The research question of the study is "Can the available freshwater resources of Türkiye withstand the population pressure that grows with intense migration in the future?" The analysis was carried out using the qualitative method based on available quantitative data and using the Falkenmark and Shiklomanov indicators. It is aimed to fill a gap in the literature by addressing the relationship between Türkiye's migration and freshwater resources in the context of the indicators in question. As a result, even if Türkiye's available freshwater resources continue to be under pressure in the future as they are now, the country's natural population growth will not push the country's resources below the water scarcity limit. In Erbil City, municipal wastewater (MWW) is disposed directly without any treatment processes in the natural environment water body and in some places used for irrigation purposes. Untreated MWW causes problems for the environment, and people's health. Water quantity and quality variation produce complications for water sources in Erbil City, Kurdistan Region-Iraq. There is a lack of performing MWW management fundamentals in the area as well. This research aimed to study the MWW management in Erbil City, presenting water resource difficulties and bringing about suitable solutions for the water resource problems, and also to highlight the risk for the poor Management. MWW Data on Erbil municipal (EMWW) water quality parameters were collected and analyzed for the study period (four months), beginning in October 2022 and ending in March 2023. Twelve EMWW quality parameters were captured and tested in the Laboratory, arranged, and compared with MWW disposal criteria and local standards. The following MWW parameters include pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved salts (TDS), chloride (CL), total solids (TS), total alkalinity, total acidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and colour. The results showed that Erbil's MWW characteristics in terms of temperatures ranged between 11-23 °C and in turn, affected biological species activities. Maximum PH value was 7.7. Total alkalinity found in the range from 140 to 178 mg/l. Chloride concentration results showed for October was 62 mg/l and the maximum value was 80 mg/l in November due to the increment in temperature and evaporation. The range of the COD values of sewage water for five months was 246 -773 mg. Erbil's MWW's moderate to medium strength may be treated and utilized for landscaping, fountains, and irrigation, minimizing the need for fresh water from resources like wells and surface water in the Greater Zab River. Extensive livestock farming plays a crucial role in the economy of agrosilvopastoral systems of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula (known as dehesas and montados in Spanish and Portuguese, respectively) as well as providing essential ecosystem services. The existence of livestock in these areas heavily relies on the effective management of natural resources (annual pastures and water stored in ponds built ad hoc). The present work aims to assess the water availability in these ponds by developing equations to estimate the water volume based on the surface area, which can be quantified by means of remote sensing techniques. For this purpose, field surveys were carried out in September 2021, 2022 and 2023 at ponds located in representative farms, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with RGB sensors and survey-grade global navigation satellite systems and inertial measurement units (GNSS-IMU). These datasets were used to produce high-resolution 3D models by means of Structure-from-Motion and Multi-View Stereo photogrammetry, facilitating the estimation of the stored water volume within a Geographic Information System (GIS). The Volume–Area–Height relationships were calibrated to allow conversions between these parameters. Regression analyses were performed using the maximum volume and area data to derive mathematical models (power and quadratic functions) that resulted in significant statistical relationships (r2 > 0.90, p < 0.0001). The root mean square error (RMSE) varied from 1.59 to 17.06 m3 and 0.16 to 3.93 m3 for the power and quadratic function, respectively. Both obtained equations (i.e., power and quadratic general functions) were applied to the estimated water storage in similar water bodies using available aerial or satellite imagery for the period from 1984 to 2021. Satellite imagery has become a widespread resource for modeling variability in lake surfaces. However, the extended monitoring of a lake's perimeter faces significant challenges due to atmospheric obstacles that cannot be rectified. Due to the atmosphere's everchanging opacity, only half of the acquired satellite images have reliable qualitative accuracy making it possible to identify a lake's contour. Consequently, approximately 50% of the monthly lake outline values can be determined using remote sensing methods, leaving the remaining 50% unknown. This situation is applicable to three lakes in Morocco (Abakhan, Ouiouan, and Tiglmanine), the subjects of the current research for the period between 1984 and 2022. What can we do if, during a period of time in which we monitored the evolution of the surface of a lake by satellite means, we obtain only about 50% of the possible images? Shall we just settle for this and stop the analysis? Although it may be challenging to believe, the present study introduces two statistical methods for interpolating and validating the monthly values of the lake outline: the iterative ratio method based on the autocorrelation of the monthly water balance and the Kalman filter. We estimated the reconstruction errors of the missing values and validated the methodology using an inverse philosophy, reconstructing the initial data from the table of the simulation results. Given that the difference between the initial values and the reconstructed initial values resembles white noise or an AR (1) process with a low coefficient, we deemed the methodological approach acceptable. Several comparison criteria between the two interpolation methods were employed, yet determining the more appropriate one remains challenging. Based on our surface reconstruction method, Lake Abakhan, with an average area of 22 hectares, experienced significant fluctuations, ranging from a maximum of 34 hectares in 2010 to a minimum of 0.8 hectares in 2022. Lake Ouiouan, with an average area of 14 hectares, displayed much lower variation, with a maximum of 17 hectares in 2020 and a minimum of 6.5 hectares in 1988. Lake Tiglmanine showed a pattern similar to that of Lake Abakhan but with less pronounced fluctuations. With an average area of 6.1 hectares, its maximum was 9.2 hectares in 2011 and its minimum was 4.1 hectares in 1984. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Governments often provide space for operation to multinational companies (MNCs), but the state does not assess the impact these companies have on the area and its people. Such ill-informed decisions often cause environmental damages. Environmental governance connects the public policies, environment, and people. This article discusses the case of Plachimada, Kerala, India, which witnessed the establishment of a soft-drink bottling plant by Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd. With the commencement of operation, the near-by areas started experiencing conditions which were never felt before the advent of the soft-drink giant. Utilizing an extensive dataset pertinent to the low-carbon economy and water resources extracted from 30 provinces across China, encompassing the period from 2004 to 2019, we have structured a synergistic model that explores the integrative interplay between the low-carbon economic framework and the water resource system. To assess the composite synergy effects, we employed Kernel density estimation in conjunction with Markov chain analysis, aiming to elucidate the temporal distribution dynamics and the spatial evolutionary patterns of provincial-level synergism within China's low-carbon economy-water resource nexus. Our findings reveal that, over the span from 2005 to 2019, the synergy effect within China's hybridized low-carbon economy-water resource system predominantly occupied a stage of moderate amalgamation, demonstrating a consistent upward trajectory since 2011. Notably, multilevel differentiation of composite system synergy is evident nationally, with pronounced trends of divergence manifesting in the eastern, western, and northeastern provinces. In contrast, the synergy effect exhibited in the central region is characterized by regional heterogeneity, yet the absolute disparities in synergy levels have diminished over time. Moreover, analysis of the synergy degree's rank order status within the composite system indicates a relative stability, punctuated by a 'club convergence' phenomenon. Against the backdrop of global climate change, the interactions between low-carbon economies and water resources have garnered significant attention within the realm of global sustainable development research. Exploring these synergistic relationships offers a potential avenue for identifying effective strategies to manage and harness resources, thereby facilitating economic growth and social advancement while mitigating the pace of global climate change. This paper employs data related to the low-carbon economy and water resources in 30 provinces of China from 2004 to 2019. It constructs a composite system model and an evaluation index system to investigate the synergistic effect between these two factors. The study employs the kernel density estimation method and Markov chain to analyze the distribution dynamics and spatial evolution of the synergy level in the composite system of the low-carbon economy and water resources across each province in China. The results indicate the following: [1] Between 2005 and 2019, the synergy effect of China's low-carbon economy-water resources complex system exhibited a mild level of synergy. Since 2011, the degree of synergy has steadily increased, with the synergy degrees of the low-carbon economy system, water resources system, and their complex systems reaching 0.256, 0.487, and 0.277, respectively, by 2019. [2] The absolute difference in the level of synergy between the low-carbon economy and water resources complex systems in the east, west, and northeast regions demonstrates a significant expansion. However, in the central region, regional differences in the synergy effect exist, although the absolute difference exhibits a narrowing trend. [3] The ranking status of the synergy in the low-carbon economy-water resources composite system is relatively stable, displaying the phenomenon of "club convergence." Nonetheless, when spatial effects are considered, the probability of "rank locking" decreases in the lowcarbon economy-water resources composite system. The findings of this paper contribute to a deeper understanding of the synergistic relationship between China's low-carbon economy and water resources, providing a basis for decision-making aimed at achieving China's sustainable development. Water shortage and food security concerns are amplified by the spread of irrigated cultures within the context of climatic unpredictability. In the hot, arid MENA area, the frequent drought periods and the continuous deterioration of water resources limits the ecological system's functioning and the sustainable agricultural productivity. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the potential impacts of the evolution of water resources management on the environmental components, using Westerlund's (2007) panel cointegration and the Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (CCE-MG) estimator for a sample of six MENA economies over 35 years ((1990–2015). In the short run, there is unidirectional causality from agricultureadded value to CO 2 and from water productivity to CO 2 without any feedback. while, a bidirectional causality nexus was detected between energy consumption and CO 2 emission In the long run, however, a feedback causality has been obtained between CO 2 emissions, agriculture added value, water productivity, and energy consumption. Sustainable water management, smart water systems, and energy transition in the water related activities are highly recommended as priorities towards a NetZero carbon global economic trend. In the era of COP28, where most of the developed and developing economies concentrate more on the development of environmentally friendly energy resources to tackle the issue of climate change. Nevertheless, the literature lacks appropriate evidence regarding the influences of green energy and other resources on food security. This study analyses the influences of land use, green energy, and water resources on food accessibility in emerging economies, while also considering the important roles of natural resources, research and development (R&D) expenditure, and economic growth during 1980–2020. Due to non‐linear data dispersion, the novel moments quantile regression is employed. Results assert that land use has a positive significant influence on food accessibility in the presence of water resources and a weaker negative impact in the presence of natural resources. Natural and water resources are detrimental to food accessibility in the Emerging Seven (E7) countries. Furthermore, R&D expenditure and green energy positively (negatively), while economic growth negatively (positively) impacted food accessibility in the presence of natural resources (water resources). The results are robust and validate causal inferences that help develop appropriate policies for emerging economies concerning food accessibility or security. In this rapidly evolving era, most empirical studies consider environmental quality. Conversely, this study contributes to the literature by examining the factors influencing food accessibility, as this issue is of considerable importance because of the rapidly growing global population.
