The objective of the work was to study the properties of functional insoles for protective footwear using an original methodology by simulating the dynamic real-life conditions. Two insole variants were examined; both are made from a three-layer composite with the middle layer being a polypropylene melt-blown nonwoven. The variants differed in terms of the presence or absence of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and a biocide in the middle layer. Insole samples were subjected to pressure and examined in terms of the adsorption and desorption of acidic and alkaline liquids, followed by tear strength experiments. In addition, the insoles were placed in protective footwear and the microclimate existing inside the resulting system was determined using T/RH sensors by means of three complementary methods: under controlled climatic conditions, on a thermal foot model, and on human subjects. The results clearly indicate that insoles containing SAP are more effective than those without SAP in terms of both hygienic and mechanical properties.

The results of studies assessing the influence of the addition of carbon nanofillers, such as multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) that differ in size and structure, on the molecular and supramolecular structure and properties of alginate fibers that might be prospective precursors for carbon fiber (PCF) industry are presented in this article. The investigation was carried out by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and tension testing. In the frame of the current study, two types of alginate fibers were examined and compared: alginic acid and calcium alginate fibers. Alginic acid fibers were formed by chemical treatment of calcium alginate fibers with hydrochloric acid due to the fact that Ca2+ ions presented in the fibers were expected to adversely affect the prospective carbonization process. This investigation brought important conclusions about the influence of nanofillers on the physical properties of the final material. Understanding the link between the incorporation of carbon nanostructures and a possible influence on the formation of ordered carbon structures in the precursor fibers brings an important opportunity to get insights into the application of alginate fibers as a prospective base material for obtaining cost-efficient carbon fibers.

The paper presents the results of research into glycolide/L-lactide copolymer (PGLA) fiber formation by wet spinning from solution. The selected process conditions led to fibers with a specific tensile strength of more than 35 cN/tex. Furthermore, ceramic nanoadditives such as hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) were used to obtain fibers with osteoconductive properties. It was found that the ceramic nanoadditives reduced the specific strength of fibers (to 24 cN/tex for β-TCP and to 27 cN/tex for HAp). The paper also presents wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) evaluation of the supramolecular structure of the fibers as well as their porosity parameters and microscopic structure. The obtained fibers were woven into a textile fabric with potential applications in biomedical engineering.

Salivary gland tumors are rare head and neck tumors constituting up to 6% of all head and neck neoplasms; despite being mostly benign, these tumors present in diverse histological subtypes, making them challenging to diagnose and treat. Our research aims to investigate the link between inflammation and tumorigenesis within the salivary glands based on the literature regarding the etiopathogenesis of benign salivary gland tumors. This scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews and reporting guidelines. The search was conducted using the Pubmed and Embase databases. Articles published between 2004 and May 2024 were included in the review. A total of 1097 papers were collected and identified. After 271 duplicates were removed, 826 titles and abstracts were independently reviewed by two researchers. Based on the title and abstract, 735 citations were excluded, and 91 articles were assessed for eligibility. Data were extracted from 46 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The review highlights the significance of inflammation-related factors and its relations with benign salivary gland tumors (SGTs). Knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of these tumors remains insufficient, and their rich immunological background poses challenges in diagnosis. The findings also point to directions for further clinical research, which will be necessary to implement these molecules in clinical practice.

Drought can significantly impact fiber crop cultivation due to the plants' specific water requirements and their extended vegetative period. The purpose of the research was to examine how drought stress affects the quality and chemical composition of hemp ( Cannabis sativa L.) fibers. A three-year pot experiment was conducted in a plant growth facility, using controlled drought stress for hemp plants. Soil moisture levels were maintained at three levels, where 45% field water capacity was the control and 35% and 25% FWC were drought. A comprehensive suite of fiber quality characterization techniques, including linear density measurement, tenacity assessment, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD), was employed to evaluate the impact of drought stress on fiber properties. The chemical composition of hemp fibers was thoroughly analyzed, quantifying the content of cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, and lignin. The findings indicate that drought conditions significantly influence linear density, wax and fat content, as well as the crystallinity of the fibers.

Salivary gland tumors are highly variable in clinical presentation and histology. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies 22 types of malignant and 11 types of benign tumors of the salivary glands. Diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is based on imaging (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging) and fine-needle aspiration biopsy, but the final diagnosis is based on histopathological examination of the removed tumor tissue. In this pilot study, we are testing a new approach to identifying peptide biomarkers in saliva that can be used to diagnose salivary gland tumors. The research material for the peptidomic studies was extracts from washings of neoplastic tissues and healthy tissues (control samples). At the same time, saliva samples from patients and healthy individuals were analyzed. The comparison of the peptidome composition of tissue extracts and saliva samples may allow the identification of potential peptide markers of salivary gland tumors in patients' saliva. The peptidome compositions extracted from 18 tumor and 18 healthy tissue samples, patients' saliva samples (11 samples), and healthy saliva samples (8 samples) were analyzed by LC-MS tandem mass spectrometry. A group of 109 peptides was identified that were present only in the tumor tissue extracts and in the patients' saliva samples. Some of the identified peptides were derived from proteins previously suggested as potential biomarkers of salivary gland tumors (ANXA1, BPIFA2, FGB, GAPDH, HSPB1, IGHG1, VIM) or tumors of other tissues or organs (SERPINA1, APOA2, CSTB, GSTP1, S100A8, S100A9, TPI1). Unfortunately, none of the identified peptides were present in all samples analyzed. This may be due to the high heterogeneity of this type of cancer. The surprising result was that extracts from tumor tissue did not contain peptides derived from salivary gland-specific proteins (STATH, SMR3B, HTN1, HTN3). These results could suggest that the developing tumor suppresses the production of proteins that are essential components of saliva.

Cyanophycin (CGP) is a polypeptide consisting of amino acids-aspartic acid in the backbone and arginine in the side chain. Owing to its resemblance to cell adhesive motifs in the body, it can be considered suitable for use in biomedical applications as a novel component to facilitate cell attachment and tissue regeneration. Although it has vast potential applications, starting with nutrition, through drug delivery and tissue engineering to the production of value-added chemicals and biomaterials, CGP has not been brought to the industry yet. To develop scaffolds using CGP powder produced by bacteria, its properties (e.g., biocompatibility, morphology, biodegradability, and mechanical strength) should be tailored in terms of the requirements of the targeted tissue. Crosslinking commonly stands for a primary modification method for renovating biomaterial features to these extents. Herein, we aimed to crosslink CGP for the first time and present a comparative study of different methods of CGP crosslinking including chemical, physical, and enzymatic methods by utilizing glutaraldehyde (GTA), UV exposure, genipin, 1-ethyl-3-[3-dimethylaminopropyl] carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS), and monoamine oxidase (MAO). Crosslinking efficacy varied among the samples crosslinked via the different crosslinking methods. All crosslinked CGP were non-cytotoxic to L929 cells, except for the groups with higher GTA concentrations. We conclude that CGP is a promising candidate for scaffolding purposes to be used as part of a composite with other biomaterials to maintain the integrity of scaffolds. The initiative study demonstrated the unknown characteristics of crosslinked CGP, even though its feasibility for biomedical applications should be confirmed by further examinations. Poly(lactic acid) has great potential in sectors where degradability is an important advantage due to its polymer nature. The medical, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries have shown interest in using PLA. To overcome the limitations of stiffness and brittleness in the polymer, researchers have conducted numerous modifications to develop fibers with improved properties. One such modification involves using plasticizing modifiers that can provide additional and desired properties. The scientific reports indicate that low-molecular-weight esters (LME) (triethyl citrate and bis (2-ethylhexyl) adipate) affect the plasticization of PLA. However, the research is limited to flat structures, such as films, casts, and extruded shapes. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of esters on the process of forming, the properties, and the morphology of fibers formed through the melt-spinning method. It was found that the modified PLA required different spinning and drawing conditions compared to the unmodified polymer. DSC, FTIR, WAXD, and GPC/SEC analyses were performed for the modified fibers. Mechanical tests and morphology evaluations using SEM microscopy were also conducted. The applied plasticizers lowered the temperature of the spinning process by 40 °C, and allowed us to obtain a higher degree of crystallinity and a better tenacity at a lower draw ratio. GPC/SEC analysis confirmed that the polymer-plasticizer interaction is physical because the booth plasticizer peaks were separated in the chromatographic columns. The use of LME in fibers significantly reduces the temperature of the spinning process, which reduces production costs. Additives significantly change the production process and the structure of the fiber depending on their rate, which may affect the properties, e.g., the rate of degradation. We can master the degree of crystallinity through the variable amount of LME. The degree of crystallization of the polymers has a significant influence on polymer application.

The application of biobased and biodegradable polymers, such as polylactide (PLA), in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D-printing technology creates a new prospect for rapid prototyping and other applications in the context of ecology. The popularity of the FDM method and its significance in material engineering not only creates new prospects for the development of technical sciences on an industrial scale, but also introduces new technologies into households. In this study, the kinetics of the hydrolytic degradation of samples obtained by the FDM method from commercially available PLA filaments under a thermally accelerated regime were analyzed. The investigation was conducted at the microstructural, supramolecular, and molecular levels by using methods such as micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), viscosimetry, and mass erosion measurements. The obtained results clearly present the rapid structural changes in 3D-printed materials during degradation due to their amorphous initial structure. The complementary studies carried out at different scale levels allowed us to demonstrate the relationship between the observed structural changes in the samples and the hydrolytic decomposition of the polymer chains, which made it possible to scientifically understand the process and expand the knowledge on biodegradation.

Secondary inorganic aerosols play an important role in air pollution and climate change, and their formation modulates the atmospheric deposition of reactive nitrogen (including oxidized and reduced nitrogen), thus impacting the nitrogen cycle. Large-scale and long-term analyses of secondary inorganic aerosol formation based on model simulations have substantial uncertainties. Here we improve constraints on secondary inorganic aerosol formation using decade-long in situ observations of aerosol composition and gaseous precursors from multiple monitoring networks across the United States. We reveal a shift in the secondary inorganic aerosol formation regime in the rural United States between 2011 and 2020, making rural areas less sensitive to changes in ammonia concentrations and shortening the effective atmospheric lifetime of reduced forms of reactive nitrogen. This leads to potential increases in reactive nitrogen deposition near ammonia emission hotspots, with ecosystem impacts warranting further investigation. Ammonia (NH 3 ), a critical but not directly regulated precursor of fine particulate matter in the United States, has been increasingly scrutinized to improve air quality. Our findings, however, show that controlling NH 3 became significantly less effective for mitigating fine particulate matter in the rural United States. Poly(carbonate-urea-urethane) (PCUU)-based scaffolds exhibit various desirable properties for tissue engineering applications. This study thus aimed to investigate the suitability of PCUU as polymers for the manufacturing of nonwoven mats by electrospinning, able to closely mimic the fibrous structure of the extracellular matrix. PCUU nonwovens of fiber diameters ranging from 0.28 ± 0.07 to 0.82 ± 0.12 μm were obtained with an average surface porosity of around 50-60%. Depending on the collector type and solution concentration, a broad range of tensile strengths (in the range of 0.3-9.6 MPa), elongation at break (90-290%), and Young's modulus (5.7-26.7 MPa) at room temperature of the nonwovens could be obtained. Furthermore, samples collected on the plate collector showed a shape-memory effect with a shape-recovery ratio ( R r ) of around 99% and a shape-fixity ratio ( R f ) of around 96%. Biological evaluation validated the inertness, stability, and lack of cytotoxicity of PCUU nonwovens obtained on the plate collector. The ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and endothelial cells (HUVECs) to attach, elongate, and grow on the surface of the nonwovens suggests that the manufactured nonwovens are suitable scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.

Background: Impact of pretransplantation risk factors on mortality in the first year after heart transplantation remains largely unknown. Using machine learning algorithms, we selected clinically relevant identifiers that could predict 1-year mortality after pediatric heart transplantation., Methods: Data were obtained from the United Network for Organ Sharing Database for years 2010-2020 for patients 0-17 years receiving their first heart transplant (N = 4150). Features were selected using subject experts and literature review. Scikit-Learn, Scikit-Survival, and Tensorflow were used. A train:test split of 70:30 was used. N-repeated k-fold validation was performed (N = 5, k = 5). Seven models were tested, Hyperparameter tuning performed using Bayesian optimization and the concordance index (C-index) was used for model assessment., Results: A C-index above 0.6 for test data was considered acceptable for survival analysis models. C-indices obtained were 0.60 (Cox proportional hazards), 0.61 (Cox with elastic net), 0.64 (gradient boosting), 0.64 (support vector machine), 0.68 (random forest), 0.66 (component gradient boosting), and 0.54 (survival trees). Machine learning models show an improvement over the traditional Cox proportional hazards model, with random forest performing the best on the test set. Analysis of the feature importance for the gradient boosted model found that the top 5 features were the most recent serum total bilirubin, the travel distance from the transplant center, the patient body mass index, the deceased donor terminal Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase/Alanine transaminase (SGPT/ALT), and the donor PCO 2 ., Conclusions: Combination of machine learning and expert-based methodology of selecting predictors of survival for pediatric heart transplantation provides a reasonable prediction of 1- and 3-year survival outcomes. The degradation of bio-based plastic materials in field soil under natural conditions was investigated in this study. Three bio-based plastics materials, which contained polylactide (PLA) with polybutylene adipate terephthalate and additives (PLA_1), PLA-based polyester blend with mineral filler (PLA_2), and polybutylene succinate with mineral filler (PBS_1) in the form of the film, were subjected to soil burial biodegradation processes. The experiments were carried out in a climate with an average annual temperature of 9.4 °C, in winter and summer periods for one year. The degradation of the materials was evaluated by macro- and microscopic observations, weight loss, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile test. Macroscopic observation indicated that changes in the color of film surface were visible for samples PBS_1 after 12 months of degradation. Using microscopic inspection the erosion of surface samples PLA_1 and PBS_1 after 12 months was observed. Mass loss of samples PLA_1 and PLA_2 after one year of degradation were below 0.6 %. Moreover, for PBS_1 sample, mass loss was equal to 4.3 %. Based on the obtained results of the mass loss, a description of the degradation kinetics was proposed, showing the changes in the thickness of the tested polymer over time. The thermal stability of the samples PLA_1 and PLA_2 decreased during the degradation process by 16.1 and 2.6 °C, respectively, and for PBS_1 increased by 1.7 °C. Assessing nutrient critical load exceedances requires complete and accurate atmospheric deposition budgets for reactive nitrogen (N r ). The exceedance is the total amount of N r deposited to the ecosystem in excess of the critical load, which is the amount of N r input below which harmful effects do not occur. Total deposition includes all forms of N r (i.e., organic and inorganic) deposited to the ecosystem by wet and dry pathways. Here we present results from the Southern Appalachian Nitrogen Deposition Study (SANDS), in which a combination of measurements and field-scale modeling was used to develop a complete annual N r deposition budget for a deciduous forest at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. Wet deposition of ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, and bulk organic N were measured directly. The dry deposited N r fraction was estimated using a bidirectional resistance-based model driven with speciated measurements of N r air concentrations (e.g., ammonia, ammonium aerosol, nitric acid, nitrate aerosol, bulk organic N in aerosol, total alkyl nitrates, and total peroxy nitrates), micrometeorology, canopy structure, and biogeochemistry. Total annual deposition was ~6.7 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , which is on the upper end of N r critical load estimates recently developed for similar ecosystems in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Of the total (wet + dry) budget, 51.1% was contributed by reduced forms of N r NH x = ammonia + ammonium ) , with oxidized and organic forms contributing ~41.3% and 7.6%, respectively. Our results indicate that reductions in NH x deposition would be needed to achieve the lowest estimates (~3.0 kg N ha -1 yr -1 ) of N r critical loads in southern Appalachian forests., Competing Interests: Competing interests. The obligatory step in the life cycle of a lytic bacteriophage is the release of its progeny particles from infected bacterial cells. The main barrier to overcome is the cell wall, composed of crosslinked peptidoglycan, which counteracts the pressure prevailing in the cytoplasm and protects the cell against osmotic lysis and mechanical damage. Bacteriophages have developed two strategies leading to the release of progeny particles: the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis and enzymatic cleavage by a bacteriophage-coded endolysin. In this study, we cloned and investigated the TP84_28 endolysin of the bacteriophage TP-84, which infects thermophilic Geobacillus stearothermophilus , determined the enzymatic characteristics, and initially evaluated the endolysin application as a non-invasive agent for disinfecting surfaces, including those exposed to high temperatures. Both the native and recombinant TP84_28 endolysins, obtained through the Escherichia coli T7-lac expression system, are highly thermostable and retain trace activity after incubation at 100 °C for 30 min. The proteins exhibit strong bacterial wall digestion activity up to 77.6 °C, decreasing to marginal activity at ambient temperatures. We assayed the lysis of various types of bacteria using TP84_28 endolysins: Gram-positive, Gram-negative, encapsulated, and pathogenic. Significant lytic activity was observed on the thermophilic and mesophilic Gram-positive bacteria and, to a lesser extent, on the thermophilic and mesophilic Gram-negative bacteria. The thermostable TP84_28 endolysin seems to be a promising mild agent for disinfecting surfaces exposed to high temperatures.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare and complex disease with poor prognosis, which requires lifelong treatment., Objective: To describe 3-year follow-up real-life data on treatment with soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators (Riociguat) of patients with PH, measuring current risk assessment parameters., Methods: This study retrospectively collected clinical and epidemiological data of patients with PH of group 1 (pulmonary arterial hypertension) and group 4 (chronic thromboembolic PH). Non-invasive and invasive parameters corresponding to the risk assessment were analyzed at baseline and follow-up. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS 18.0 software, and p-values < 0.050 were considered statistically significant., Results: In total, 41 patients receiving riociguat were included in the study. Of them, 31 had already completed 3 years of treatment and were selected for the following analysis. At baseline, 70.7% of patients were in WHO functional class III or IV. After 3 years of treatment, the WHO functional class significantly improved in all patients. In addition, the median of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) significantly increased from 394 ± 91 m at baseline to 458 ± 100 m after 3 years of follow-up (p= 0.014). The three-year survival rate was 96.7%., Conclusion: In our real-life cohort, most patients with PH treated with riociguat showed stable or improved risk parameters, especially in the 6MWT, at 3 years of follow-up.

Presently, the whole globe is struggling the tough challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccination remains the most effective and safe COVID-19 weapon for adults and in the paediatric population. Aside from possible mild and moderate post-vaccination side effects, more severe side effects may occur. We retrospectively analysed a group of 5 teenagers aged from 15 to 17 years with obesity/overweight (BMI ranging from 24.8 to 30) who presented typical myocarditis symptoms following the first or second dose (3 and 2 patients, respectively) of the COVID-19 vaccine. In the whole study group, a significant increase in troponin serum concentration was observed (1674-37,279.6 ng/L) with a further quick reduction within 3-4 days. In all patients, ST segments elevation or depression with repolarisation time abnormalities in electrocardiography were noticed. Chest X-ray results were within normal limits. Echocardiography showed normal left ventricular diameter (47-56.2 mm) with ejection fraction between 61-72%. All patients were diagnosed with myocarditis based on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. During further hospitalisation, swift clinical improvement was notable. Follow-up in the whole study group was obtained after 106-134 days from initial CMR, revealing no myocarditis symptoms, proper troponin level, and no ECG or echocardiographic abnormalities. At the same time, persistent myocardium injury features were detected in the whole study group, including ongoing myocarditis. COVID-19-vaccine-induced myocarditis seems to be a mild disease with fast clinical recovery, but the complete resolution of the inflammatory process may last over 3 months. Further follow-up and investigation for assessing subsequent implications and long-term COVID-19-vaccine-induced myocarditis is required.

The leading quantum electrodynamic corrections to the nuclear magnetic shielding in one- and two-electron atomic systems are obtained in a complete form, and the shielding constants of ^{1}H, ^{3}He^{+}, and ^{3}He are calculated to be 17.735 436(3)×10^{-6}, 35.507 434(9)×10^{-6}, and 59.967 029(23)×10^{-6}, respectively. These results are orders of magnitude more accurate than previous ones, and, with the ongoing measurement of the nuclear magnetic moment of ^{3}He^{+} and planned ^{3}He^{2+}, they open the window for high-precision absolute magnetometry using ^{3}He NMR probes. The presented theoretical approach is applicable to all other light atomic and molecular systems, which facilitates the improved determination of magnetic moments of any light nuclei.

Background: Transplant centers saw a substantial reduction in deceased donor solid organ transplantation since the beginning of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States. There is limited data on the impact of COVID-19 on adult and pediatric heart transplant volume and variation in transplant practices. We hypothesized that heart transplant activity decreased during COVID-19 with associated increased waitlist mortality., Methods: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database was used to identify patients at the time of listing for heart transplant from 2017-2020. Patients were categorized as pediatric (<18 years) or adult (≥18 years) and as pre-COVID (2017-2019) or post-COVID (2020). Regional and statewide data were taken from United States Census Bureau. CovidActNow project was used to obtain COVID-19 mortality rates., Findings: Among pediatric patients, average time on the waiting list decreased by 28 days. Even though the average number of pediatric transplants (n=39 per month) did not change significantly during 2020, there was a temporal decline in the first quarter of 2020 followed by a sharp increase. Overall absolute pediatric waitlist mortality decreased from 5•31 to 4•73, however female mortality increased by 2%. Regional differences in pediatric mortality were observed: Northeast, decreased by 7•5%; Midwest, decreased by 9%; West, increased by 3•5%; and South, increased by 13%. North Dakota (0•55), Oklahoma (0•21) and Hawaii (0•33) showed higher mortality than other states per 100,000. In adults, average time on waiting list increased by 40 days and there was an increase in the number of transplants from 242 to 266. Adult waitlist mortality had a larger decrease, 18•44 to 15•70, with an increase in female mortality of 7%. Regional differences in adult mortality were also observed: Northeast, decreased by 3%; Midwest, increased by 5•5%; West, increased by 4•5% and South, decreased by 5%. Iowa (0•37), Wyoming (0•22), Arkansas (0•18) and Vermont (0•19) had the highest mortality per 100,000 compared to the other states., Interpretation: Pediatric heart transplant volume declined in early 2020 followed by a later increase, while adult transplant volume increased all year round. Although, overall pediatric waitlist mortality decreased, female waitlist mortality increased for both adults and pediatrics. Regional differences in waitlist mortality were observed for both pediatrics and adults. A parastomal hernia is a common complication following stoma surgery. Due to the large number of hernial relapses and other complications, such as infections, adhesion to the intestines, or the formation of adhesions, the treatment of hernias is still a surgical challenge. The current standard for the preventive and causal treatment of parastomal hernias is to perform a procedure with the use of a mesh implant. Researchers are currently focusing on the analysis of many relevant options, including the type of mesh (synthetic, composite, or biological), the available surgical techniques (Sugarbaker's, "keyhole", or "sandwich"), the surgical approach used (open or laparoscopic), and the implant position (onlay, sublay, or intraperitoneal onlay mesh). Current surface modification methods and combinations of different materials are actively explored areas for the creation of biocompatible mesh implants with different properties on the visceral and parietal peritoneal side. It has been shown that placing the implant in the sublay and intraperitoneal onlay mesh positions and the use of a specially developed implant with a 3D structure are associated with a lower frequency of recurrences. It has been shown that the prophylactic use of a mesh during stoma formation significantly reduces the incidence of parastomal hernias and is becoming a standard method in medical practice.

We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state J=1 of the H&#95;{2}, D&#95;{2}, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment Q&#95;{d}=0.285 699(15)(18)  fm^{2} in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Moreover, a very good agreement with the recent calculation of Q&#95;{d} based on the chiral effective field theory, although much less accurate, indicates the importance of the spin dependence of nucleon interactions in the accurate description of nuclei.

In this study, differences in the kinetics of the thermal-supported hydrolytic degradation of polylactide (PLA) wet spinning fibres due to material variance in the initial molecular and supramolecular structure were analysed. The investigation was carried out at the microstructural and molecular levels by using readily available methods such as scanning electron microscopy, mass erosion measurement and estimation of intrinsic viscosity. The results show a varying degree of influence of the initial structure on the degradation rate of the studied PLA fibres. The experiment shows that hydrolytic degradation at a temperature close to the cold crystallization temperature is, on a macroscopic level, definitely more rapid for the amorphous material, while on a molecular scale it is similar to a semi-crystalline material. Furthermore, for the adopted degradation temperature of 90 °C, a marginal influence of the pH of the degradation medium on the degradation kinetics was also demonstrated.

In this work, a multifunctional polymer composite is made using melt-blowing technology from polypropylene (88 wt.%) and poly (ethylene terephthalate) (12 wt.%) with the addition of functional modifiers, that is, 3 g of a superabsorbent polymer and 5 g of a biocidal agent (Biohaloysite). The use of modifiers is aimed at obtaining adequate comfort when using the target respiratory protection equipment (RPE) in terms of microclimate in the breathing zone and protection against harmful aerosols including bioaerosols. The developed production method is innovative in that the two powdered modifiers are simultaneously applied in the stream of elementary polymeric fibers by two independent injection systems. Aerosols of the modifiers are supplied via a specially designed channel in the central segment of the die assembly, reducing the amount of materials used in the production process and saving energy. The results show that the proposed method of incorporating additives into the fiber structure did not adversely affect the protective and functional properties of the resulting filtration nonwovens. The produced nonwoven composites are characterized by SEM, FTIR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Given their high filtration efficiency at 5%, satisfactory airflow resistance (~200 Pa), very good antimicrobial activity, and excellent water absorption capacity, the obtained multifunctional nonwoven composites may be successfully used in filtering respiratory protective devices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Objective: To evaluate the association between neonatal neurobehavioral state and oral feeding outcomes following congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery., Study Design: This single center retrospective cohort study described neonates undergoing cardiac surgery evaluated perioperatively with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS). We compared NNNS attention scores, which evaluates neonates' ability to orient and fixate on stimuli, with the feeding outcomes percentage of feeds taken orally at discharge and time to reach full oral feeds using regression analyses. Models were constructed for both preoperative and postoperative NNNS evaluations., Results: Between August 2015 and October 2017, 124 neonates underwent 89 preoperative and 97 postoperative NNNS evaluations. In multivariable Cox regression, higher preoperative NNNS attention scores were associated with a shorter time to achieve full oral feeds (hazard ratio 1.4; 95% CI 1.0‒2.0; P = .047). This relationship was not seen for post-operative NNNS attention scores or percentage of oral feeds at discharge. Depending on the model, younger age at surgery, increased ventilator days, increased length of stay, and single or 2-ventricle anatomy with aortic arch obstruction were associated with lower percentage of oral feeds at discharge and/or delay in full oral feeds., Conclusions: Higher neonatal attention before cardiac surgery is associated with improved feeding outcomes. Prospective assessment of neonatal neurobehavioral state may be a novel approach to predict and target interventions to improve feeding outcomes in CHD. Dental hygienists in Poland work in various settings, including public health care institutions, private dental practices, dental clinics, kindergartens, and schools. They can often face medical emergencies, whose rate is increasing owing to comorbidities and aging of dental patients' populations. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of medical emergencies in dental hygienists' practice in Poland and the hygienists' preparedness and attitudes toward emergencies.A 10-question authors' own questionnaire was filled in by 613 dental hygienist. It referred to their cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, availability of emergency medical equipment in the workplace, the prevalence of medical emergencies including the need for an emergency medical service (EMS) call, and the management of cardiac arrest.Overall, 613 dental hygienists working in Poland participated in the study; 38.99% had taken part in basic life support (BLS) training within the previous 12 months and 35.89% within 2 to 5 years; 15.17% had experienced at least 1 emergency situation requiring an EMS call within the previous 12 months. Vasovagal syncope was the most common medical emergency (15.97%), followed by moderate anaphylactic reaction (13.87%), seizures (8.81%), hyperventilation crisis (7.50%), and hypoglycemia (7.34%).The most common medical emergency in dental hygienists' practice in Poland is syncope followed by mild anaphylactic reaction. Most of the dental hygienist had participated in a BLS course within the previous 5 years; however, 20% of them have never participated since graduation. Dental hygienists should participate in BLS courses every 2 years to keep the cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills and stay up-to-date with current guidelines. An important part of the study participants declare the lack of availability in their workplaces of life-saving equipment, including self-expanding bag resuscitator, oropharyngeal, and supraglottic airway device and oxygen source. Medical emergency equipment as recommended in the international guidelines should be available in every practice.

The first laser spectroscopic determination of the change in the nuclear charge radius for a five-electron system is reported. This is achieved by combining high-accuracy ab initio mass-shift calculations and a high-accuracy measurement of the isotope shift in the 2s^{2}2p  ^{2}P&#95;{1/2}→2s^{2}3s  ^{2}S&#95;{1/2} ground state transition in boron atoms. Accuracy is increased by orders of magnitude for the stable isotopes ^{10,11}B and the results are used to extract their difference in the mean-square charge radius ⟨r&#95;{c}^{2}⟩^{11}-⟨r&#95;{c}^{2}⟩^{10}=-0.49(12)  fm^{2}. The result is qualitatively explained by a possible cluster structure of the boron nuclei and quantitatively used to benchmark new ab initio nuclear structure calculations using the no-core shell model and Green's function Monte Carlo approaches. These results are the foundation for a laser spectroscopic determination of the charge radius of the proton-halo candidate ^{8}B.

This study analyzed the structural changes of semicrystalline polylactide (PLA) in the form of spun-bonded mulching nonwovens, during outdoor composting. The investigation was carried out at the microstructural, supramolecular and molecular levels using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and the viscosity method, respectively. The obtained experimental results revealed how the popular outdoor composting method, realized under two different European climatic conditions (in Poland and in Bulgaria), affects the degradation of PLA nonwoven, designed for agriculture use. The results showed the insignificant influence of the climatic conditions and prepared compost mixtures on the molecular and micromorphological structure of PLA spun-bonded mulching nonwovens, with a visible increase in crystallinity after the first year of composting. Significant changes were observed only after the second year of composting, which indicates the resistance of semicrystalline PLA to degradation in outdoor composting conditions.

The quantum electrodynamic correction to the energy of the hydrogen molecule has been evaluated without expansion in the electron-proton mass ratio. The obtained results significantly improve the accuracy of theoretical predictions reaching the level of 1 MHz for the dissociation energy, in very good agreement with the parallel measurement [Hölsch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 103002 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.122.103002]. Molecular hydrogen has thus become a cornerstone of ultraprecise quantum chemistry, which opens perspectives for determination of fundamental physical constants from its spectra.

Genetic and immunological diseases, despite many attempts to develop effective treatments, still remain a great challenge for medicine. Current therapies of these diseases consist of pharmacological alleviation of symptoms, rehabilitation and psychological help which, although very important, are not sufficient. Therefore, searching for new therapeutics which could remove the major causes of these diseases is of particular importance for the society. Natural compounds reveal many biological activities which makes them candidates for drugs in such diseases. One of them is genistein, a compound from the group of flavonoids. As it affects multiple processes, genistein has become in the center of interest of many scientists working on diseases of various etiology, course and inheritance. It was used in experimental therapies of some genetic diseases (Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Parkinson disease, cystic fibrosis), as well as autoimmunological diseases and allergies. Clinical trials with the use of genistein in treatment of patients suffering from Alzheimer's diseases and mucopolysaccharidosis type III are ongoing. The employment of differential properties of genistein in attempts to treat each of these diseases is of special interest. In this review, detailed molecular mechanisms of genistein action are summarized in the light of therapies of the above mentioned genetic and immunological diseases, including description of therapeutic potentials of each activity of this isoflavone, efficiency of its action, and its potential use as a drug in the future.

The relativistic correction to the dissociation energy of H&#95;{2}, D&#95;{2}, and HD molecules has been accurately calculated without expansion in the small electron-nucleus mass ratio. The obtained results indicate the significance of nonadiabatic effects and resolve the discrepancy of theoretical predictions with recent experimental values for H&#95;{2} and D&#95;{2}. While the theoretical accuracy is now significantly improved and is higher than the experimental one, we observe about 3σ discrepancy for the dissociation energy of HD, which requires further investigation.
