Electronic nematicity in iron pnictide materials is coupled to both the lattice and the conducting electrons, which allows both structural and transport observables to probe nematic fluctuations and the order parameter. Here we combine simultaneous transport and x-ray diffraction measurements with in-situ tunable strain (elasto-XRD) to measure the temperature dependence of the shear modulus and elastoresistivity above the nematic transition and the spontaneous orthorhombicity and resistivity anisotropy below the nematic transition, all within a single sample of $Ba(Fe_{0.96}Co_{0.04})_{2} As_{2}$. The ratio of transport to structural quantities is nearly temperature-independent over a 74 K range and agrees between the ordered and disordered phases. These results show that elasto-XRD is a powerful technique to probe the nemato-elastic and nemato-transport couplings, which have important implications to the nearby superconductivity. Summary The dynamics of polarization evolution and rotation in 0.68PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.32PbTiO3 relaxor ferroelectric thin films are studied via in operando synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction with AC electric fields. A frequency-limited suppression of polarization rotation was observed above ultrasonic frequencies ( ≳ 20 kHz). The nature of this suppression is informed by scanning transmission electron microscopy in the zero-field state, where a high density of nanoscale, low-angle domain walls was observed. In combination with switching dynamics studies, the results suggest that the suppression of polarization rotation at ultrasonic frequencies is due to the large activation field needed to move the domain walls when the polarization rotates between different monoclinic phases. These results are critical in understanding piezoelectric relaxation phenomena in relaxor ferroelectrics.

The O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) transferase (OGT) is a master regulator of installing O-GlcNAc onto serine or threonine residues on a multitude of target proteins. Numerous nuclear and cytosolic proteins of varying functional classes, including translational factors, transcription factors, signaling proteins, and kinases are OGT substrates. Aberrant O-GlcNAcylation of proteins is implicated in signaling in metabolic diseases such as diabetes and cancer. Selective and potent OGT inhibitors are valuable tools to study the role of OGT in modulating a wide range of effects on cellular functions. We report linear bisubstrate ether-linked uridine-peptide conjugates as OGT inhibitors with micromolar affinity. In vitro evaluation of the compounds revealed the importance of donor substrate, linker and acceptor substrate in the rational design of bisubstrate analogue inhibitors. Molecular dynamics simulations shed light on the binding of this novel class of inhibitors and rationalized the effect of amino acid truncation of acceptor peptide on OGT inhibition.

Objective The role of anticoagulation (AC) in the management of otogenic cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (OCVST) remains controversial. Our study aims to better define when AC is used in OCVST. Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library were searched from inception to February 14, 2019 for English and English-translated articles. References cited in publications meeting search criteria were searched. Titles and abstracts were screened and identified in the literature search, assessing baseline risk of bias on extracted data with the methodological index for nonrandomized studies (MINORS) scale. Random effects meta-regression followed by random forest machine learning analysis across 16 moderator variables between AC and nonanticoagulated (NAC) cohorts was conducted. Results A total of 92% of treated patients were free of neurologic symptoms at the last follow-up (mean 29.64 months). Four percent of AC and 14% of NAC patients remained symptomatic (mean 18.72 and 47.10 months). 3.5% of AC patients experienced postoperative wound hematomas. AC and NAC recanalization rates were 81% (34/42) and 63% (five-eights), respectively. OCVST was correlated with cholesteatoma and intracranial abscess. Among the analyzed covariates, intracranial abscess was most predictive of AC and cholesteatoma was most predictive of NAC. Comorbid intracranial abscess and cholesteatoma were predictive of AC. Conclusion The present study is the first to utilize machine learning algorithms in approaching OCVST. Our findings support the therapeutic use of AC in the management of OCVST when complicated by thrombophilia, intracranial abscess, and cholesteatoma. Patients with intracranial abscess and cholesteatoma may benefit from AC and surgery. Patients with cholesteatoma can be managed with NAC and surgery.

Electronic nematicity in iron pnictide materials has been extensively studied by various experimental techniques, yet its heat capacity anomaly at the phase transition has not been examined quantitatively. In this work we review the thermodynamic description of nematicity in $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ using the Landau free energy, which defines the behavior of three thermodynamic quantities: the structural orthorhombicity that develops below the nematic transition, the softening shear modulus above the transition, and the discontinuous heat capacity at the transition. We derive a quantitative relationship between these three quantities, which is found to hold for a range of dopings. This result shows that the nematic transition is exceedingly well described by a mean-field model in the underdoped regime of the phase diagram.

The interconversion of charge and spin currents via spin-Hall effect is essential for spintronics. Energy-efficient and deterministic switching of magnetization can be achieved when spin polarizations of these spin currents are collinear with the magnetization. However, symmetry conditions generally restrict spin polarizations to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced. Here, we show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn3GaN/permalloy heterostructures can generate unconventional spin-orbit torques at room temperature corresponding to out-of-plane and Dresselhaus-like spin polarizations which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spin-orbit torque, enabling high-efficient antiferromagnetic spintronics., In the typical spin-hall effect, spin-current, charge current, and spin polarisation are all mutually perpendicular, a feature enforced by symmetry. Here, using an anti-ferromagnet with a triangular spin structure, the authors demonstrate a spin-hall effect without a perpendicular spin alignment.

In most unconventional and high-temperature superconductors, superconductivity emerges as a nearby symmetry-breaking phase is suppressed by chemical doping or pressure1–7. This has led to the belief that the fluctuations associated with the symmetry-breaking phase are beneficial, if not responsible, for the superconducting pairing8,9. A direct test to verify this hypothesis is to observe a decrease of the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) by applying the symmetry-breaking conjugate field that suppresses the dynamic fluctuations of the competing order. However, most of the competing phases in unconventional superconductors break translational symmetry, requiring a spatially modulated conjugate field that is difficult to realize experimentally. Here, we show that anisotropic strain, the conjugate field of nematicity, reduces the Tc of an iron pnictide. For optimally doped samples we show a fivefold reduction of Tc with less than one per cent of strain. For underdoped samples, Tc becomes zero yielding a fully metallic ground state. In addition to providing direct evidence of the role played by the nematic fluctuations in the formation of the superconducting state, these results demonstrate tunable mechanical control of a high-temperature superconductor, an important step forward for technological applications of superconductivity. Using doped BaFe2As2, the authors test whether nematicity is linked to superconductivity in the iron pnictides by applying the conjugate field to nematicity—a specific form of strain—and observe that the critical temperature decreases.

A series of novel furan-2-yl-1H-pyrazoles and their chemical precursors were synthesized and evaluated for their effectiveness at disrupting α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation in vitro. The compounds were found to inhibit α-syn aggregation with efficacy comparable to the promising drug candidate anle138b. The results of this study indicate that compounds 8b, 8l, and 9f may qualify as secondary leads for the structure-activity relationship studies aimed to identify the suitable compounds for improving the modulatory activity targeted at α-syn self-assembly related to Parkinson's disease.

Ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide holds great promise for a broad spectrum of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible and scaled microelectronic applications, including memory, low-voltage transistors, and infrared sensors, among others. An outstanding challenge hindering the implementation of this material is polarization instability during field cycling. In this study, the nanoscale phenomena contributing to both polarization fatigue and wake-up are reported. Using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, the conversion of non-polar tetragonal and polar orthorhombic phases to a non-polar monoclinic phase while field cycling devices comprising noble metal contacts is observed. This phase exchange accompanies a diminishing ferroelectric remanent polarization and provides device-scale crystallographic evidence of phase exchange leading to ferroelectric fatigue in these structures. A reduction in the full width at half-maximum of the superimposed tetragonal (101) and orthorhombic (111) diffraction reflections is observed to accompany wake-up in structures comprising tantalum nitride and tungsten electrodes. Combined with polarization and relative permittivity measurements, the observed peak narrowing and a shift in position to lower angles is attributed, in part, to a phase exchange of the non-polar tetragonal to the polar orthorhombic phase during wake-up. These results provide insight into the role of electrodes in the performance of hafnium oxide-based ferroelectrics and mechanisms driving wake-up and fatigue, and demonstrate a non-destructive means to characterize the phase changes accompanying polarization instabilities.

Transition metal based oxide heterostructures exhibit diverse emergent phenomena e.g. two dimensional electron gas, superconductivity, non-collinear magnetic phase, ferroelectricity, polar vortices, topological Hall effect etc., which are absent in the constituent bulk oxides. The microscopic understandings of these properties in such nanometer thick materials are extremely challenging. Synchrotron x-ray based techniques such as x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant x-ray scattering (RXS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, etc. are essential to elucidating the response of lattice, charge, orbital, and spin degrees of freedoms to the heterostructuring. As a prototypical case of complex behavior, rare-earth nickelates (RENiO3 with RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Lu) based thin films and heterostructures have been investigated quite extensively in recent years. An extensive body of literature about these systems exists and for an overview of the field, we refer the interested readers to the recent reviews Annual Review of Materials Research 46, 305 (2016) and Reports on Progress in Physics 81, 046501 (2018). In the present article, we give a brief review that concentrates on the use of synchrotron based techniques to investigate a specific set of EuNiO3/LaNiO3 superlattices, specifically designed to solve a long-standing puzzle about the origin of simultaneous electronic, magnetic and structural transitions of the RENiO3 series., Comment: Invited Review Article

As a hallmark of electronic correlation, spin-charge interplay underlies many emergent phenomena in doped Mott insulators, such as high-temperature superconductivity, whereas the half-filled parent state is usually electronically frozen with an antiferromagnetic order that resists external control. We report on the observation of a new positive magnetoresistance that probes the staggered susceptibility of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Mott insulator built as an artificial SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice. Its size is particularly large in the high-temperature insulating paramagnetic phase near the N\'eel transition. This novel magnetoresistance originates from a collective charge response to the large longitudinal spin fluctuations under a linear coupling between the external magnetic field and the staggered magnetization enabled by strong spin-orbit interaction. Our results demonstrate a magnetic control of the binding energy of the fluctuating particle-hole pairs in the Slater-Mott crossover regime analogous to the BCS-to-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover of ultracold-superfluids., Comment: Accepted by Nature communications

Abnormal protein aggregation has been linked to many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease (PD). The main pathological hallmark of PD is the formation of Lewy bodies (LBs) and Lewy neurites, both of which contain the presynaptic protein alpha-synuclein (α-syn). Under normal conditions, native α-syn exists in a soluble unfolded state but undergoes misfolding and aggregation into toxic aggregates under pathological conditions. Toxic α-syn species, especially oligomers, can cause oxidative stress, membrane penetration, synaptic and mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as other damage, leading to neuronal death and eventually neurodegeneration. Early diagnosis and treatments targeting PD pathogenesis are urgently needed. Given its critical role in PD, α-syn is an attractive target for the development of both diagnostic tools and effective therapeutics. This review summarizes the progress toward discovering imaging probes and aggregation inhibitors for α-syn. Relevant strategies and techniques in the discovery of α-syn-targeted drugs are also discussed.

Understanding metal-to-insulator phase transitions in solids has been a keystone not only for discovering novel physical phenomena in condensed matter physics but also for achieving scientific breakthroughs in materials science. In this work, we demonstrate that the transport properties (i.e., resistivity and transition temperature) in the metal-to-insulator transitions of perovskite nickelates are tunable via the epitaxial heterojunctions of LaNiO3 and NdNiO3 thin films. A mismatch in the oxygen coordination environment and interfacial octahedral coupling at the oxide heterointerface allows us to realize an exotic phase that is unattainable in the parent compound. With oxygen vacancy formation for strain accommodation, the topmost LaNiO3 layer in LaNiO3/NdNiO3 bilayer thin films is structurally engineered and it electrically undergoes a metal-to-insulator transition that does not appear in metallic LaNiO3. Modification of the NdNiO3 template layer thickness provides an additional knob for tailoring the tilting angles of corner-connected NiO6 octahedra and the linked transport characteristics further. Our approaches can be harnessed to tune physical properties in complex oxides and to realize exotic physical phenomena through oxide thin-film heterostructuring.

Bulk single-crystal relaxor-ferroelectrics, like Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), are widely known for their large piezoelectricity. This is attributed to polarization rotation which is facilitated by the presence of various crystal symmetries for compositions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Relaxor-ferroelectric thin films, which are necessary for low-voltage applications, suffer a reduction in their piezoelectric response due to clamping by the passive substrate. To understand the microscopic behavior of this adverse phenomenon, we employ AC electric field driven in-operando synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD) on patterned device structures to investigate the piezoelectric domain behavior under an electric field for both a clamped (001) PMN-PT thin film on Si and a (001) PMN-PT membrane released from its substrate. In the clamped film, the substrate inhibits the field induced rhombohedral (R) to tetragonal (T) phase transition resulting in a reversible R to Monoclinic (M) transition with a reduced longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d33 < 100 pm/V. Releasing the film from the substrate results in recovery of the R to T transition and results in a d33 > 1000 pm/V. Using diffraction with spatial mapping, we find that lateral constraints imposed by the boundary between active and inactive material also inhibits the R to T transition. Phase-field calculations on both clamped and released PMN-PT thin films simulate our experimental findings. Resolving the suppression of thin film piezoelectric response is critical to their application in piezo-driven technologies.

Of all parent compounds of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, ${\mathrm{EuFe}}_{2}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ exhibits by far the largest magnetostructural coupling due to the sizable biquadratic interaction between Eu and Fe moments. While the coupling between Eu antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and Fe structural/AFM domains enables rapid field detwinning, this prevents simple magnetometry measurements from extracting the critical fields of the Eu metamagnetic transition. Here, we measure these critical fields by combining x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy with in situ tunable uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field. The combination of two tuning knobs allows us to separate the stress detwinning of structural domains from the field-induced reorientation of Eu moments. Intriguingly, we find a spin-flip transition which can only result from a strongly anisotropic interaction between Eu planes. We argue that this anisotropic exchange is a consequence of the strong anisotropy in the magnetically ordered Fe layer, which presents a form of higher-order coupling between Eu and Fe magnetism.

Galanin receptors (provisional nomenclature as recommended by NC-IUPHAR [57]) are activated by the endogenous peptides galanin and galanin-like peptide. Human galanin is a 30 amino-acid non-amidated peptide [52]; in other species, it is 29 amino acids long and C-terminally amidated. Amino acids 1-14 of galanin are highly conserved in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibia and fish. Shorter peptide species (e.g. human galanin-1-19 [21] and porcine galanin-5-29 [170]) and N-terminally extended forms (e.g. N-terminally seven and nine residue elongated forms of porcine galanin [22, 170]) have been reported. More recently, the newly-identified peptide, spexin (SPX), has been reported to activate human GAL2 and GAL3 (but not GAL1) receptors in heterologous expression systems; and to alter GAL2/3 receptor-related behaviours in animals [89].

We introduce a novel acoustic echo cancellation framework for systems where the loudspeaker and the microphone array are not synchronized. We consider the problem in the most general form where the loss of synchronization is time-varying. The proposed system is linear and it utilizes microphone array beamforming for echo cancellation. It is shown to provide significant improvement over standard echo cancellation and noise suppression techniques in both noise suppression and speech recognition.

The present status of antibiotic resistant requires an urgent invention of novel agents that act on clinically unexplored antibacterial targets. The enzyme MraY (phospho-MurNAc-pentapeptide translocase), essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis, fulfils this criterion as it has not been explored as a target in a clinical context. Specifically, the enzyme is involved in the lipid-linked cycle of peptidoglycan biosynthesis and is reportedly targeted by naturally-occurring nucleoside antibiotics. The antimicrobial 'caprazamycin' class of nucleoside antibiotics targets Mycobacterium tuberculosis and clinically relevant Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa besides various drug resistant strains and is therefore an eligible starting point for the development of novel agents. In this review, we aim to summarise the structure-activity relationships of the natural, semi-synthetic as well as synthetic analogues of nucleoside antibiotic caprazamycins. This review highlights caprazamycins as promising lead structures for development of potent and selective antimicrobial agents that target MraY, the bacterial enzyme involved in the first membrane-dependent step in bacterial peptidoglycan assembly.

Background There is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of lipid-lowering drug treatment (LLT) for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the elderly. Objectives We examined the relationship of early initiation of LLT with short- and long-term all-cause and CVD mortality in persons older than 65 years in this post hoc study from the Second Australian National Blood Pressure study (ANBP2). Methods This was an in- and post-trial observational study. About 4257 hypertensive participants aged 65 to 84 years within Australian family practices were randomized to an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or a diuretic treatment group. After excluding participants with a prior history of CVD, the cohort was stratified into "LLT" and "no LLT" subgroups based on LLT status at randomization. Results At randomization, the participants had a mean age of 72 years, average blood pressure of 168/91 mm Hg and estimated 5-year CVD risk of 18.7 ± 8.3%. In the overall study population, the association of LLT with long-term (11-years) all-cause and non-CVD mortality was significant (hazard ratio [HR] 0.78 [95% confidence interval {CI} 0.66–0.92, P = .003] and HR 0.70 [95% CI 0.54–0.90, P = .006], respectively). Magnitudes of the association of LLT with long-term mortality and the association with short-term mortality were similar; however, no statistically significant association with short-term mortality was observed. In the subgroup analysis by baseline 5-year CVD risk, LLT participants in the highest risk tertile had a substantially lower relative risk for short-term all-cause mortality (HR 0.31, 95% CI 0.13–0.71, P for interaction .02) compared to those with lower estimated CVD risk. All analyses were adjusted for baseline and in-trial characteristics. Conclusion Our study showed a strong association between LLT and reduced long-term all-cause mortality. Thus, our findings support recommendations of the use of LLT in patients over 65 years, particularly those with high CVD risk who were more likely to obtain additional benefits in the short term. The findings also suggested that mortality benefits of LLT for the elderly may take longer to become evident.

The metal-insulator transition in correlated materials is usually coupled to a symmetry-lowering structural phase transition. This coupling not only complicates the understanding of the basic mechanism of this phenomenon but also limits the speed and endurance of prospective electronic devices. We demonstrate an isostructural, purely electronically driven metal-insulator transition in epitaxial heterostructures of an archetypal correlated material, vanadium dioxide. A combination of thin-film synthesis, structural and electrical characterizations, and theoretical modeling reveals that an interface interaction suppresses the electronic correlations without changing the crystal structure in this otherwise correlated insulator. This interaction stabilizes a nonequilibrium metallic phase and leads to an isostructural metal-insulator transition. This discovery will provide insights into phase transitions of correlated materials and may aid the design of device functionalities.

High-speed electronics require epitaxial films with exceptionally high carrier mobility at room temperature (RT). Alkaline-earth stannates with high RT mobility show outstanding prospects for oxide electronics operating at ambient temperatures. However, despite significant progress over the last few years, mobility in stannate films has been limited by dislocations because of the inability to grow fully coherent films. Here, we demonstrate the growth of coherent, strain-engineered phases of epitaxial SrSnO3 (SSO) films using a radical-based molecular beam epitaxy approach. Compressive strain stabilized the high-symmetry tetragonal phase of SSO at RT, which, in bulk, exists only at temperatures between 1062 and 1295 K. We achieved a mobility enhancement of over 300% in doped films compared with the low-temperature orthorhombic polymorph. Located in the midline lamina terminalis of the anterior wall of the third ventricle, the median preoptic nucleus is a thin elongated nucleus stretching around the rostral border of the anterior commissure. Its neuronal elements, composed of various types of excitatory glutamatergic and inhibitory GABAergic neurons, receive afferent neural signals from (1) neighboring subfornical organ and organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis related to plasma osmolality and hormone concentrations, e.g., angiotensin II; (2) from peripheral sensors such as arterial baroreceptors and cutaneous thermosensors. Different sets of these MnPO glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons relay output signals to hypothalamic, midbrain, and medullary regions that drive homeostatic effector responses. Included in the effector responses are (1) thirst, antidiuretic hormone secretion and renal sodium excretion that subserve osmoregulation and body fluid homeostasis; (2) vasoconstriction or dilatation of skin blood vessels, and shivering and brown adipose tissue thermogenesis for core temperature homeostasis; (3) inhibition of hypothalamic and midbrain nuclei that stimulate wakefulness and arousal, thereby promoting both REM and non-REM sleep; and (4) activation of sympathetic pathways that drive vasoconstriction and heart rate to maintain arterial pressure and the perfusion of vital organs. The small size of MnPO belies its massive homeostatic significance.

In response to dehydration, humans experience thirst. This subjective state is fundamental to survival as it motivates drinking, which subsequently corrects the fluid deficit. To elicit thirst, previous studies have manipulated blood chemistry to produce a physiological thirst stimulus. In the present study, we investigated whether a physiological stimulus is indeed required for thirst to be experienced. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to scan fully hydrated participants while they imagined a state of intense thirst and while they imagined drinking to satiate thirst. Subjective ratings of thirst were significantly higher for imagining thirst compared with imagining drinking or baseline, revealing a successful dissociation of thirst from underlying physiology. The imagine thirst condition activated brain regions similar to those reported in previous studies of physiologically evoked thirst, including the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC), anterior insula, precentral gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and operculum, indicating a similar neural network underlies both imagined thirst and physiologically evoked thirst. Analogous brain regions were also activated during imagined drinking, suggesting the neural representation of thirst contains a drinking-related component. Finally, the aMCC showed an increase in functional connectivity with the insula during imagined thirst relative to imagined drinking, implying functional connectivity between these two regions is needed before thirst can be experienced. As a result of these findings, this study provides important insight into how the neural representation of subjective thirst is generated and how it subsequently motivates drinking behavior.

We have elucidated the spin, lattice, charge, and orbital coupling mechanism underlying the multiferroic character in tensile-strained $\mathrm{EuTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ films. Symmetry determined by oxygen octahedral tilting shapes the hybridization between the Eu $4f$ and the Ti $3d$ orbitals, and this inhibits predicted Ti displacement proper ferroelectricity. Instead, phonon softening emerges at low temperatures within the pseudocube (110) plane, orthogonal to the anticipated ferroelectric polarization symmetry. Additionally, the magnetic anisotropy is determined by orbital distortion through hybridization between the Ti $3d$ and the typically isotropic $\mathrm{E}{\mathrm{u}}^{2+}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}4f$ states. This unique scenario demonstrates the critical role symmetry plays in the coupling of order parameters defining multiferroic behavior.

We report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square-lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO_{3})_{1}/(SrTiO_{3})_{1}. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Neel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Neel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperatures far above the Neel transition. These behaviors are characteristics of the Slater-Mott crossover regime, providing a unique experimental model system of the spin-half Hubbard Hamiltonian with a tunable intermediate coupling strength.

Heterostructure engineering provides an efficient way to obtain several emergent phases of LaNiO3, as demonstrated in recent studies. In this work, a new class of short-periodic superlattice, consisting of LaNiO3 and EuNiO3, has been grown by pulsed laser interval deposition to investigate the effect of structural symmetry mismatch on the electronic and magnetic behaviors. Using synchrotron-based soft and hard x-ray resonant scattering experiments, we have found that these heterostructures undergo simultaneous electronic and magnetic transitions. Most importantly, LaNiO3 within these artificial structures exhibits a new antiferromagnetic, charge ordered insulating phase, which may be a potential candidate to achieve high temperature superconductivity.

Correlated electrons give rise to both exotic electronic and magnetic properties in rare-earth nickelates. Here we present evidence of the interfacial coupling between two nickelate systems, EuNiO_{3} (ENO) and LaNiO_{3} (LNO), with different electronic and magnetic properties but with compatible structural registry giving rise to an electrostructural transition, unobserved in each constituent. Nominally, LNO remains in a paramagnetic-metallic R3[over ¯]c phase while orthorhombic ENO undergoes antiferromagnetic and insulating transitions. However, the ENO/LNO heterostructure displays a uniform rotational symmetry set by an entwined interface. This leads to an anomalous reduction of bond disproportionation in the ENO layer through the metal to insulator transition and concomitantly charge disproportionation opens the gap accompanied by antiferromagnetic ordering. Our results resolve a long-standing question in the physics of rare-earth nickelates, herein demonstrating that charge and bond disproportionation are competing mechanisms for the charge localization process in the rare-earth nickelate system.

Rare-earth pyrochlore iridates $(R{E}_{2}\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7})$ consist of two interpenetrating cation sublattices, the $\mathit{RE}$ with highly frustrated magnetic moments, and the iridium with extended conduction orbitals significantly mixed by spin-orbit interactions. The coexistence and coupling of these two sublattices create a landscape for discovery and manipulation of quantum phenomena such as the topological Hall effect, massless conduction bands, and quantum criticality. Thin films allow extended control of the material system via symmetry-lowering effects such as strain. While bulk $\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}\mathrm{I}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ shows a spontaneous hysteretic Hall effect below 1.5 K, we observe the effect at elevated temperatures up to 15 K in epitaxial thin films on (111) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates synthesized via solid-phase epitaxy. Similar to the bulk, the lack of observable long-range magnetic order in the thin films points to a topological origin. We use synchrotron-based element-specific x-ray diffraction and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to compare powders and thin films to attribute the spontaneous Hall effect in the films to localization of the Ir moments. We link the thin-film Ir local moments to lattice distortions absent in the bulklike powders. We conclude that the elevated-temperature spontaneous Hall effect is caused by the topological effect originating either from the Ir or Pr sublattice, with interaction strength enhanced by the Ir local moments. This spontaneous Hall effect with weak net moment highlights the effect of vanishingly small lattice distortions as a means to discover topological phenomena in metallic frustrated magnetic materials.

Significance The results demonstrated here show superconductivity in the antiferromagnetic BaFe 2 As 2 without chemical substitution, by atomic level control of local structure through epitaxial superlattice design. The interfacial interactions modify the FeAs 4 tetrahedra via systematic control of tetragonal and orthorhombic structures, inducing superconductivity. This indicates structure and dimensionality play an important role in the superconducting properties in Fe-based superconductors, and opens a path to structural manipulation of superconductivity in ultrathin layers of Fe-based materials. This is likely to play a major role in understanding and developing Fe-based superconductors.

$5d$ iridates have shown vast emergent phenomena due to a strong interplay among their lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom, because of which the potential in spintronic application of the thin-film form is highly leveraged. Here we have epitaxially stabilized perovskite $\mathrm{SrI}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.8}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{n}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ on [001] $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ substrates through pulsed laser deposition and systematically characterized the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Physical property measurements unravel an insulating ground state with a weak ferromagnetism in the compressively strained epitaxial film. The octahedral rotation pattern is identified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resolving a mix of ${a}^{+}{b}^{\ensuremath{-}}{c}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${a}^{\ensuremath{-}}{b}^{+}{c}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ domains. X-ray magnetic resonant scattering directly demonstrates a G-type antiferromagnetic structure of the magnetic order and the spin canting nature of the weak ferromagnetism.

Atomic layer controlled growth of epitaxial thin films of unconventional superconductors opens the opportunity to discover novel high temperature superconductors. For instance, the interfacial atomic configurations may play an important role in superconducting behavior of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 and other Fe-based superconducting thin films. Here, we demonstrate a selective control of the atomic configurations in Co-doped BaFe2As2 epitaxial thin films and its strong influence on superconducting transition temperatures by manipulating surface termination of (001) SrTiO3 substrates. In a combination of first-principles calculations and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, we show that Co-doped BaFe2As2 on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 is a tetragonal structure with an atomically sharp interface and with an initial Ba layer. In contrast, Co-doped BaFe2As2 on SrO-terminated SrTiO3 has a monoclinic distortion and a BaFeO3- x initial layer. Furthermore, the superconducting transition temperature of Co-doped BaFe2As2 ultrathin films on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 is significantly higher than that on SrO-terminated SrTiO3, which we attribute to shaper interfaces with no lattice distortions. This study allows the design of the interfacial atomic configurations and the effects of the interface on superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors.

Background Information is scarce regarding effects of antihypertensive medication on blood pressure variability ( BPV ) and associated clinical outcomes. We examined whether antihypertensive treatment changes BPV over time and whether such change (decline or increase) has any association with long‐term mortality in an elderly hypertensive population. Methods and Results We used data from a subset of participants in the Second Australian National Blood Pressure study (n=496) aged ≥65 years who had 24‐hour ambulatory blood pressure recordings at study entry (baseline) and then after a median of 2 years while on treatment (follow‐up). Weighted day‐night systolic BPV was calculated for both baseline and follow‐up as a weighted mean of daytime and nighttime blood pressure standard deviations. The annual rate of change in BPV over time was calculated from these BPV estimates. Furthermore, we classified both BPV estimates as high and low based on the baseline median BPV value and then classified BPV changes into stable: low BPV , stable: high BPV , decline: high to low , and increase: low to high . We observed an annual decline (mean± SD : −0.37±1.95; 95% CI, −0.54 to −0.19; P BPV between baseline and follow‐up. Having constant stable: high BPV was associated with an increase in all‐cause mortality (hazard ratio: 3.03; 95% CI, 1.67–5.52) and cardiovascular mortality (hazard ratio: 3.70; 95% CI, 1.62–8.47) in relation to the stable: low BPV group over a median 8.6 years after the follow‐up ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Similarly, higher risk was observed in the decline: high to low group. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that in elderly hypertensive patients, average BPV declined over 2 years of follow‐up after initiation of antihypertensive therapy, and having higher BPV (regardless of any change) was associated with increased long‐term mortality.

Pathological hyperphosphorylation of tau and subsequent aggregation to form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) is closely related to progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and progressive supranuclear palsy. A recent study showed that MK-8719 (6) is a selective and potent small molecule inhibitor of human O-GlcNAcase (hOGA). The pharmacological inhibition of OGA, the sole enzyme involved in removal of a sugar moiety (O-GlcNAc residue) from tau, increases global O-GlcNAc levels within the brain and reduces tau phosphorylation. The OGA inhibitor slows neurodegeneration and improves cognitive function in AD and related tauopathies. Here, we discuss the findings of that study and the development of OGA inhibitors as novel therapeutic strategy for treatment of age-related memory impairment in neurodegenerative diseases.

The Audio Front-End (AFE) is a key component in mitigating acoustic environmental challenges for far-field automatic speech recognition (ASR) on Amazon Echo family of products. A critical component of the AFE is the Beam Selector, which identifies which beam points to the target user. In this paper, we proposed a new SIR beam selector that utilizes subband-based signal-to-interference ratios to learn the locations of the audio sources and therefore further improve the beam selection accuracy for multi-microphone based AFE system. We analyzed the performance of a Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) beam selector with a comparison to classic beam selector using the datasets collected under various conditions. This method is evaluated and shown to simultaneously decrease word-error-rate (WER) for speech recognition by up to 46.20% and improve barge-in performance via FRR by up to 39.18%.

A fundamental difference between antiferromagnets and ferromagnets is the lack of linear coupling to a uniform magnetic field due to the staggered order parameter. Such coupling is possible via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction but at the expense of reduced antiferromagnetic (AFM) susceptibility due to the canting-induced spin anisotropy. We solve this long-standing problem with a top-down approach that utilizes spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a hidden SU(2) symmetry. We demonstrate giant AFM responses to sub-Tesla external fields by exploiting the extremely strong two-dimensional critical fluctuations preserved under a symmetry-invariant exchange anisotropy, which is built into a square-lattice artificially synthesized as a superlattice of SrIrO3 and SrTiO3. The observed field-induced logarithmic increase of the ordering temperature enables highly efficient control of the AFM order. As antiferromagnets promise to afford switching speed and storage security far beyond ferromagnets, our symmetry-invariant approach unleashes the great potential of functional antiferromagnets., Comment: 3 figures
