Solids ablate under laser irradiation, but experiments have not previously characterized the initiation of this process at ultrarelativistic laser intensities. We present first measurements of bulk ion velocity distributions as ablation begins, captured as a function of depth via Doppler-shifted x-ray line emission from two viewing angles. Bayesian analysis indicates that bulk ions are either nearly stationary or flowing outward at the plasma sound speed. The measurements quantitatively constrain the laser-plasma ablation mechanism, suggesting that a steplike electrostatic potential structure drives solid disassembly.

A new class of crystal shapes has been developed for x-ray spectroscopy of point-like or small (a few mm) emission sources. These optics allow for dramatic improvement in both achievable energy resolution and total throughput of the spectrometer as compared with traditional designs. This class of crystal shapes, collectively referred to as the Variable-Radii Spiral (VR-Spiral), utilize crystal shapes in which both the major and minor radii are variable. A crystal using this novel VR-Spiral shape has now been fabricated for high-resolution Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) experiments targeting the Pb-L3 (13.0 keV) absorption edge at the National Ignition Facility. The performance of this crystal has been characterized in the laboratory using a microfocus x-ray source, showing that high-resolution high-throughput EXAFS spectra can be acquired using this geometry. Importantly, these successful tests show that the complex three-dimensional crystal shape is manufacturable with the required precision needed to realize the expected performance of better than 5 eV energy resolution while using a 30 mm high crystal. An improved generalized mathematical form for VR-Spiral shapes is also presented allowing improved optimization as compared to the first sinusoidal-spiral based design. This new formulation allows VR-Spiral spectrometers to be designed at any magnification with optimized energy resolution at all energies within the spectrometer bandwidth.

A high-resolution x-ray spectrometer was coupled with an ultrafast x-ray streak camera to produce time-resolved line shape spectra measured from hot, solid-density plasmas. A Bragg crystal was placed near laser-produced plasma to maximize throughput; alignment tolerances were established by ray tracing. The streak camera produced single-shot, time-resolved spectra, heavily sloped due to photon time-of-flight differences, with sufficient reproducibility to accumulate photon statistics. The images are time-calibrated by the slope of streaked spectra and dewarped to generate spectra emitted at different times defined at the source. The streaked spectra demonstrate the evolution of spectral shoulders and other features on ps timescales, showing the feasibility of plasma parameter measurements on the rapid timescales necessary to study high-energy-density plasmas.

Linear transformer drivers can generate mega-amperes in hundreds of nanoseconds, allowing to produce matter under extreme conditions and study it in a laboratory setting. Drivers using this technology are more compact than Marx-banks drivers but have very similar characteristics. The key component is the magnetic core that allows to charge the system in parallel, during the dc phase when the core inductance is an ignorable part of the circuit, and to discharge it in series, during the pulsed phase when the core provides inductive isolation. However, the magnetic core increases the weight, the cost of the system, and the footprint of the device. In this article, we show how the magnetic core can be replaced by an insulator break, providing capacitive isolation instead. This approach reduces both weight and footprint of the system while minimizing current losses compared with a system with cores or no isolation whatsoever.

High resolution K-shell emission from Ni solid and near solid density nanowire arrays was measured at the ALEPH laser facility using a newly commissioned high resolution x-ray spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of a spherically bent Ge crystal coupled to a CCD. The targets were irradiated with high contrast laser pulses using the 400nm second harmonic beamline which operates at highly relativistic intensities, ao ~ 20. The ion and electron density of the plasmas were varied using arrays of 100nm diameter nanowire arrays with different wire spacings which varied from 7% of solid density to 24%. This parametrizes the collisional and radiative properties of the plasma as well as the temperature. The time integrated, high resolution K-shell spectra, coupled with moderate resolution, time resolved x ray emission reveal that the lower density nanowire arrays reach higher temperatures and radiate for longer durations of time (~25 ps) whereas the higher density nanowire arrays radiate for less than 10 ps, converging with the x-ray emission of the solid density Ni foil. Overall, the x-ray yield of the lower density nanowire arrays exceeds that of the solid density foil by a factor of ~5x. In contrast to this, the average charge state of the solid density foils is greater than that of the nanowire arrays due to the larger collisional ionization rates which occur at solid density. The experimental results will be compared to detailed transient atomic physics computations coupled with radiative hydrodynamic simulations with initial conditions provided by three-dimensional particle in cell simulations.

Ion-electron equilibration drives plasma dynamics but is challenging to model at high plasma densities, where thermalization is fast and correlation effects are significant. Experimental benchmarks in this regime have been rare due to a lack of precision diagnostics for electron or ion temperatures at high density. We present simultaneous measurements of electron and ion temperatures in solid-density titanium based on high-resolution x-ray emission spectra and newly applied advances in Stark lineshape modeling. The measurements imply an ion temperature significantly lower than the electron temperature, despite short Spitzer equilibration times. X-ray lineshapes are emitted from buried layer targets heated with a short-pulse, high-intensity laser. Titanium tracer layers heat to 1 keV electron temperatures, as inferred from x-ray line intensity ratios, while remaining at solid density due to the high temporal contrast of the laser. Observed x-ray lineshapes are double-peaked and redshifted, both of which are hallmarks of Stark broadening that are influenced differently by the electron density and the ion temperature. A new lineshape model that abandons the common assumption of dipole interactions for electron broadening can model both redshifts and line broadening self consistently. Comparing the data with this model strongly constrains both the ion temperature (700 eV) and the electron density (1.2×10 24 cm -3 ). Measured plasmas are near solid density and support a significant temperature differential between hot electrons and cooler ions. The lack of equilibration suggests that either (1) the equilibration rate is substantially slower than theorized or (2) ion heat transport plays an important role in the system.

We will discuss our recent work performing high-resolution (E/ΔE > 5000) X-ray spectroscopy of copper K-shell emission from high-intensity (I ∼10 21 W/cm 2 ) laser experiments using the ALEPH 400 nm laser at Colorado State University. Through measurements of front- and rear-side K-shell fluorescence and hot electron emission, we examine the generation and propagation of energetic electrons in thin foil and layered targets to elucidate the physics of ultra high-intensity, laser-solid interactions and the existence of temperature gradients in heated materials.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) diagnostic instrument manipulator (DIM) - based high resolution (dHIRES) x-ray spectrometer was used to measure the time evolution of the electron density (n e) and temperature (T e) in the hot spot of four NIF compressed capsules with 25 ps time resolution during the ‘stagnation’ phase. The electron density was inferred by comparing the measured Stark broadening of the krypton (Kr) Heβ spectral complex with theoretical calculations that include ion dynamic effects, and the electron temperature was inferred by comparing the measured ratio of the intensity of a dielectronically excited Li-like Kr line to the intensity of the Kr Heβ resonance line with calculations using the spectroscopic collisional radiative atomic model (SCRAM) and CRETIN collisional-radiative models. The inferred, time averaged n e values mainly agree with n e values from neutron diagnostics within uncertainties, but the neutron time-of-flight values of T ion are consistently higher than dHIRES T e values by 200–700 eV. The dHIRES measurements and measurement techniques, method of uncertainty analysis, and discussion of comparisons with measurements from neutron diagnostics are presented.

$\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{\beta}$ spectral line shapes are important for diagnosing temperature and density in many dense plasmas. This work presents $\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{\beta}$ line shapes measured with high spectral resolution from solid-density plasmas with minimized gradients. The line shapes show hallmark features of Stark broadening, including quantifiable redshifts and double-peaked structure with a significant dip between the peaks; these features are compared to models through a Markov chain Monte Carlo framework. Line shape theory using the dipole approximation can fit the width and peak separation of measured line shapes, but it cannot resolve an ambiguity between electron density ${n}_{e}$ and ion temperature ${T}_{i}$, since both parameters influence the strength of quasistatic ion microfields. Here a line shape model employing a full Coulomb interaction for the electron broadening computes self-consistent line widths and redshifts through the monopole term; redshifts have different dependence on plasma parameters and thus resolve the ${n}_{e}\ensuremath{-}{T}_{i}$ ambiguity. The measured line shapes indicate densities that are 80--100% of solid, identifying a regime of highly ionized but well-tamped plasma. This analysis also provides the first strong evidence that dense ions and electrons are not in thermal equilibrium, despite equilibration times much shorter than the duration of x-ray emission; cooler ions may arise from nonclassical thermalization rates or anomalous energy transport. The experimental platform and diagnostic technique constitute a promising new approach for studying ion-electron equilibration in dense plasmas.

Fine-structure x-ray spectra have been measured from foils with embedded tracer layers at two laser facilities. A suite of layered foils with thin Ti tracers under varied tamper layers was studied at both the Titan and the ALEPH 400 nm laser facilities, where Ti Heα emission was recorded using a high-resolution Bragg crystal spectrometer. Several indicators of plasma parameters are examined in the spectra, including temperature- and density-dependent line ratios and line broadening from Stark and opacity effects. Spectra indicate that (1) the plasma density at ALEPH is significantly higher than at Titan and (2) the electron temperature is high for near-surface layers at both facilities but drops more quickly with depth at ALEPH. These inferences of plasma conditions are consistent with differing levels of temporal contrast at each laser facility.

A novel high-resolution x-ray spectrometer for point-like emission sources has been developed using a crystal shape having both a variable major and a variable minor radius of curvature. This variable-radii sinusoidal spiral spectrometer (VR-Spiral) allows three common spectrometer design goals to be achieved simultaneously: 1. reduction of aberrations and improved spectral (energy) resolution, 2. reduction of source size broadening, and 3. use of large crystals to improve total throughput. The VR-Spiral concept and its application to practical spectrometer design are described in detail. This concept is then used to design a spectrometer for an extreme extended x-ray absorption fine structure experiment at the National Ignition Facility looking at the Pb L3 absorption edge at 13.0352 keV. The expected performance of this VR-Spiral spectrometer, both in terms of energy resolution and spatial resolution, is evaluated through the use of a newly developed raytracing tool, xicsrt. Finally, the expected performance of the VR-Spiral concept is compared to that of spectrometers based on conventional toroidal and variable-radii toroidal crystal geometries showing a greatly improved energy resolution.

We have proposed, designed and built a dual-channel x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) for spectrally- and spatially-resolved x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) measurements in the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) end station at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This spectrometer employs two spherically-bent germanium (Ge) 220 crystals, which are combined to form a large aperture dispersive element with a spectral bandwidth of ~300 eV that enables both the elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering peaks to be simultaneously measured. The apparatus and its characterization are described. A resolving power of ~1900 was demonstrated and a spatial resolution of ~12 μm was achieved in calibration tests. We report the development of a high-resolution spectrometer for extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies of materials under extreme conditions. A curved crystal and detector in the spectrometer are replaceable such that a single body is employed to perform EXAFS measurements at different x-ray energy intervals of interest. Two configurations have been implemented using toroidal crystals with Ge 311 reflection set to provide EXAFS at the Cu K-edge (energy range 8.9-9.8 keV) and Ge 400 reflection set to provide EXAFS at the Ta L3-edge (9.8-10.7 keV). Key performance characteristics of the spectrometer were found to be consistent with design parameters. The data generated at the National Ignition Facility have shown an ≃3 eV spectral resolution for the Cu K-edge configuration and ≃6 eV for the Ta L3-edge configuration.

This paper describes a new class of focusing crystal forms for the x-ray Bragg crystal spectroscopy of small, point-like, x-ray sources. These new crystal forms are designed with the aid of sinusoidal spirals, a family of curves, whose shapes are defined by only one parameter, which can assume any real value. The potential of the sinusoidal spirals for the design x-ray crystal spectrometers is demonstrated with the design of a toroidally bent crystal of varying major and minor radii for measurements of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure near the Ta-L3 absorption edge at the National Ignition Facility.

A multi-energy soft x-ray pinhole camera has been designed and built for the Madison Symmetric Torus reversed field pinch to aid the study of particle and thermal-transport, as well as MHD stability physics. This novel imaging diagnostic technique combines the best features from both pulse-height-analysis and multi-foil methods employing a PILATUS3 x-ray detector in which the lower energy threshold for photon detection can be adjusted independently on each pixel. Further improvements implemented on the new cooled systems allow a maximum count rate of 10 MHz per pixel and sensitivity to the strong Al and Ar emission between 1.5 and 4 keV. The local x-ray emissivity will be measured in multiple energy ranges simultaneously, from which it is possible to infer 1D and 2D simultaneous profile measurements of core electron temperature and impurity density profiles with no a priori assumptions of plasma profiles, magnetic field reconstruction constraints, high-density limitations, or need of shot-to-shot reproducibility. A new tool has been developed to calculate the spectral, spatial, and temporal responses of multi-energy soft x-ray (ME-SXR) pinhole cameras for arbitrary plasma densities (ne,D), temperature (Te), and impurity densities (nZ). ME-SXR imaging provides a unique opportunity for obtaining important plasma properties (e.g., Te, nZ, and Zeff) by measuring both continuum and line emission in multiple energy ranges. This technique employs a pixelated x-ray detector in which the lower energy threshold for photon detection can be adjusted independently. Simulations assuming a tangential geometry and DIII-D-like plasmas (e.g., ne,0 ≈ 8 × 1019 m-3 and Te,0 ≈ 2.8 keV) for various impurity (e.g., C, O, Ar, Ni, and Mo) density profiles have been performed. The computed brightnesses range from few 102 counts pixel-1 ms-1 depending on the cut-off energy thresholds, while the maximum allowable count rate is 104 counts pixel-1 ms-1. The typical spatial resolution in the mid-plane is ≈0.5 cm with a photon-energy resolution of 500 eV at a 500 Hz frame rate.

The here-described spectrometer was developed for the extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy of high-density plasmas at the National Ignition Facility. It employs as the Bragg reflecting element a new type of toroidally bent crystal with a constant and very large major radius R and a much smaller, locally varying, minor radius r. The focusing properties of this crystal and the experimental arrangement of the source and detector make it possible to (a) fulfill the conditions for a perfect imaging of an ideal point source for each wavelength, (b) obtain a high photon throughput, (c) obtain a high spectral resolution by eliminating the effects of source-size broadening, and (d) obtain a one-dimensional spatial resolution with a high magnification perpendicular to the main dispersion plane.

Soft x-ray detection with the new "multi-energy" PILATUS3 detector systems holds promise as a magnetically confined fusion (MCF) plasma diagnostic for ITER and beyond. The measured x-ray brightness can be used to determine impurity concentrations, electron temperatures, ne2Zeff products, and to probe the electron energy distribution. However, in order to be effective, these detectors which are really large arrays of detectors with photon energy gating capabilities must be precisely calibrated for each pixel. The energy-dependence of the detector response of the multi-energy PILATUS3 system with 100 K pixels has been measured at Dectris Laboratory. X-rays emitted from a tube under high voltage bombard various elements such that they emit x-ray lines from Zr-Lα to Ag-Kα between 1.8 and 22.16 keV. Each pixel on the PILATUS3 can be set to a minimum energy threshold in the range from 1.6 to 25 keV. This feature allows a single detector to be sensitive to a variety of x-ray energies, so that it is possible to sample the energy distribution of the x-ray continuum and line-emission. PILATUS3 can be configured for 1D or 2D imaging of MCF plasmas with typical spatial energy and temporal resolution of 1 cm, 0.6 keV, and 5 ms, respectively.

A compact multi-energy soft x-ray camera has been developed for time, energy and space-resolved measurements of the soft-x-ray emissivity in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Multi-energy soft x-ray imaging provides a unique opportunity for measuring, simultaneously, a variety of important plasma properties (Te, nZ, ΔZeff, and ne,fast). The electron temperature can be obtained by modeling the slope of the continuum radiation from ratios of the available brightness and inverted radial emissivity profiles over multiple energy ranges. Impurity density measurements are also possible using the line-emission from medium- to high-Z impurities to separate the background as well as transient levels of metal contributions. This technique should be explored also as a burning plasma diagnostic in-view of its simplicity and robustness.

A high spatial resolution of a few μm is often required for probing small-scale high-energy-density plasmas using high resolution x-ray imaging spectroscopy. This resolution can be achieved by adjusting system magnification to overcome the inherent limitation of the detector pixel size. Laboratory experiments on investigating the relation between spatial resolution and system magnification for a spherical crystal spectrometer are presented. Tungsten Lβ2 rays from a tungsten-target micro-focus x-ray tube were diffracted by a Ge 440 crystal, which was spherically bent to a radius of 223 mm, and imaged onto an x-ray CCD with 13-μm pixel size. The source-to-crystal (p) and crystal-to-detector (q) distances were varied to produce spatial magnifications (M = q/p) ranging from 2 to 10. The inferred instrumental spatial width reduces with increasing system magnification M. However, the experimental measurement at each M is larger than the theoretical value of pixel size divided by M. Future work will focus on investigating possible broadening mechanisms that limit the spatial resolution.

A high-resolving-power x-ray spectrometer has been developed for the OMEGA EP Laser System based on a spherically bent Si [220] crystal with a radius of curvature of 330 mm and a Spectral Instruments (SI) 800 Series charge-coupled device. The instrument measures time-integrated x-ray emission spectra in the 7.97- to 8.11-keV range, centered on the Cu Kα1 line. To demonstrate the performance of the spectrometer under high-power conditions, Kα1,2 emission spectra were measured from Cu foils irradiated by the OMEGA EP laser with 100-J, 1-ps pulses at focused intensities above 1018 W/cm2. The ultimate goal is to couple the spectrometer to a picosecond x-ray streak camera and measure temperature-equilibration dynamics inside rapidly heated materials. The plan for these ultrafast streaked x-ray spectroscopy studies is discussed.

These data are then employed to infer the mass density evolution within laser-driven shock waves. In our experiments, thin carbon foils are first strongly compressed and then driven into a dense state by counter-propagating shock waves. The different measurements agree that the graphite sample is about twofold compressed when the shock waves collide, and a sharp increase in forward scattering indicates disassembly of the sample 1 ns thereafter. A high resolution, Diagnostic Instrument Manipulator (DIM)-based x-ray Bragg crystal spectrometer has been calibrated for and deployed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to diagnose plasma conditions in ignition capsules near stagnation times. The spectrometer has two conical crystals in the Hall geometry focusing rays from the Kr Heα, Lyα, and Heβ complexes onto a streak camera, with the physics objectives of measuring time-resolved electron density and temperature through observing Stark broadening and the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. A third von Hamos crystal that time-integrates the Kr Heα, Heβ and intervening energy range provides in situ calibration for the streak camera signals. The spectrometer has been absolutely calibrated using a microfocus x-ray source, an array of CCD and single-photon-counting detectors, and multiple K- and L-absorption edge filters at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) x-ray laboratory. Measurements of the integrated reflectivity, energy range, and energy resolution for each crystal are discussed. These calibration data provide absolute x-ray signal levels for NIF measurements, enabling precise filter selection and comparisons to simulations.

This paper describes a new type of x-ray crystal spectrometer, which can be used in combination with gated x-ray detectors to obtain spectra from laser-produced plasmas with a high (sub-ns) time resolution. The spectrometer consists of a convex, spherically bent crystal, which images individual spectral lines as perfectly straight lines across multiple, sequentially gated, strip detectors. Since the Bragg-reflected rays are divergent, the distance between detector and crystal is arbitrary, so that this distance can be appropriately chosen to optimize the experimental arrangement with respect to the detector parameters. The spectrometer concept was verified in proof-of-principle experiments by imaging the Lβ1- and Lβ2-lines of tungsten, at 9.6735 and 9.96150 keV, from a micro-focus x-ray tube with a tungsten target onto a two-dimensional pixilated Pilatus detector, using a convex, spherically bent Si-422 crystal with a radius of curvature of 500 mm.

A high resolution 1D imaging x-ray spectrometer concept comprising a spherically bent crystal and a 2D pixelated detector is being optimized for diagnostics of small sources such as high energy density physics (HEDP) and synchrotron radiation or x-ray free electron laser experiments. This instrument is used on tokamak experiments for Doppler measurements of ion temperature and plasma flow velocity profiles. Laboratory measurements demonstrate a resolving power, E/ΔE of order 10 000 and spatial resolution better than 10 μm. Initial tests of the high resolution instrument on HEDP plasmas are being performed.

A high resolution (E/ΔE = 1200-1800) Bragg crystal x-ray spectrometer is being developed to measure plasma parameters in National Ignition Facility experiments. The instrument will be a diagnostic instrument manipulator positioned cassette designed mainly to infer electron density in compressed capsules from Stark broadening of the helium-β (1s2-1s3p) lines of krypton and electron temperature from the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. Two conically shaped crystals will diffract and focus (1) the Kr Heβ complex and (2) the Heα (1s2-1s2p) and Lyα (1s-2p) complexes onto a streak camera photocathode for time resolved measurement, and a third cylindrical or conical crystal will focus the full Heα to Heβ spectral range onto an image plate to provide a time integrated calibration spectrum. Calculations of source x-ray intensity, spectrometer throughput, and spectral resolution are presented. Details of the conical-crystal focusing properties as well as the status of the instrumental design are also presented.

This article describes a new x-ray imaging Bragg crystal spectrometer, which-in combination with a streak camera or a gated strip detector-can be used for time-resolved measurements of x-ray line spectra at the National Ignition Facility and other high power laser facilities. The main advantage of this instrument is that it produces perfect images of a point source for each wavelength in a selectable spectral range and that the detector plane can be perpendicular to the crystal surface or inclined by an arbitrary angle with respect to the crystal surface. These unique imaging properties are obtained by bending the x-ray diffracting crystal into a certain shape, which is generated by arranging multiple cones with different aperture angles on a common nodal line.

A two-dimensional stigmatic x-ray imaging scheme, consisting of two spherically bent crystals, one concave and one convex, was recently proposed [M. Bitter et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 83, 10E527 (2012)]. The Bragg angles and the radii of curvature of the two crystals of this imaging scheme are matched to eliminate the astigmatism and to satisfy the Bragg condition across both crystal surfaces for a given x-ray energy. In this paper, we consider more general configurations of this imaging scheme, which allow us to vary the magnification for a given pair of crystals and x-ray energy. The stigmatic imaging scheme has been validated for the first time by imaging x-rays generated by a micro-focus x-ray source with source size of 8.4 μm validated by knife-edge measurements. Results are presented from imaging the tungsten Lα1 emission at 8.3976 keV, using a convex Si-422 crystal and a concave Si-533 crystal with 2d-spacings of 2.21707 Å and 1.65635 Å and radii of curvature of 500 ± 1 mm and 823 ± 1 mm, respectively, showing a spatial resolution of 54.9 μm. This imaging scheme is expected to be of interest for the two-dimensional imaging of laser produced plasmas.

The implementation of advanced electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) systems on tokamak experiments has revolutionized the diagnosis of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activities and improved our understanding of instabilities, which lead to disruptions. It is therefore desirable to have an ECEI system on the ITER tokamak. However, the large size of optical components in presently used ECEI systems have, up to now, precluded the implementation of an ECEI system on ITER. This paper describes a new optical ECEI concept that employs a single spherical mirror as the only optical component and exploits the astigmatism of such a mirror to produce an image with one-dimensional spatial resolution on the detector. Since this alternative approach would only require a thin slit as the viewing port to the plasma, it would make the implementation of an ECEI system on ITER feasible. The results obtained from proof-of-principle experiments with a 125 GHz microwave system are presented.
