The ratio is a new reaction observable suggested to extract accurately structure information on halo nuclei. It corresponds to the ratio of differential cross sections for scattering and breakup, which is predicted to remove the uncertainty related to the reaction dynamics. We present here the first experimental test of the method for the 11Be + 12C collision at ELab = 20A MeV performed at Texas A&M University. Differential cross sections for scattering and inclusive one-neutron breakup have been measured with the new detector array BlueSTEAl. The ratio of cross sections is very smooth and independent of the projectile-target interaction, which demonstrates the validity of the ratio method. Nuclear halos are very exotic quantal structures observed far from stability. Because of their short lifetime, they are mostly studied through reactions. The ratio method offers a new observable: the ratio of angular differential cross sections for breakup and scattering. It is predicted to be much more sensitive to the projectile structure than individual cross sections thanks to its independence of the reaction process. We test this new observable experimentally for the first time considering the collision of 11Be on C at 22.8 MeV/nucleon. We extend this analysis to similar data recently measured on Pb at 19.1 MeV/nucleon. Both analyses confirm the theoretical predictions, which opens the door to a new era in the study of nuclear structure near the neutron dripline. This should prove invaluable in conjunction with the start of FRIB. The ratio method could also be extended to other fields of quantum physics beyond nuclear reactions.

Charge-exchange reactions are versatile probes for nuclear structure. In particular, when populating isobaric analog states, these reactions are used to study isovector nuclear densities and neutron skins. The quality of the information extracted from charge-exchange data depends on the accuracy of the reaction models and their inputs; this work addresses these two points. First, we quantify the uncertainties due to effective nucleon-nucleus interactions by propagating the parameter posterior distributions of the recent global optical model KDUQ [1] to $(p,n)$ reaction observables populating the isobaric analogue state, at beam energies in the range of $25-160$ MeV. Our analysis, focusing on $^{48}$Ca, shows that the total parametric uncertainties on the cross sections are around 60-100%. The source of this uncertainty is mainly the transition operator as the uncertainties from the distorted waves alone are less than about 15%. Second, we perform a comparison between two- and three-body models that both describe the dynamics of the reaction within the DWBA. The predictions from these two models are similar and generally agree with the available data, suggesting that 1-step DWBA is sufficient to describe the reaction process. Only at a beam energy of 25 MeV there are possibly signs that a 1-step assumption is not fully correct. This work provides motivation for the quantification of uncertainties associated with the transition operator in three-body model. Background: Analyses of elastic scattering with the optical model (OMP) are widely used in nuclear reactions. Purpose: Previous work compared a traditional frequentist approach and a Bayesian approach to quantify uncertainties in the OMP. In this study, we revisit this comparison and consider the role of the likelihood used in the analysis. Method: We compare the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for $\chi^{2}$ minimization with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to obtain parameter posteriors. Following previous work, we consider how results are affected when $\chi^{2}$/N is used for the likelihood function, N being the number of data points, to account for possible correlations in the model and underestimation of the error in the data. Results: We analyze a simple linear model and then move to OMP analysis of elastic angular distributions using a) a 5-parameter model and b) a 6-parameter model. In the linear model, the frequentist and Bayesian approaches yield consistent optima and uncertainty estimates. The same is qualitatively true for the 5-parameter OMP analysis. For the 6-parameter OMP analysis, the parameter posterior is no longer well-approximated by a Gaussian and a covariance-based frequentist prediction becomes unreliable. In all cases, when the Bayesian approach uses $\chi^{2}$/N in the likelihood, uncertainties increase by $\sqrt{N}$. Conclusions: When the parameter posterior is near-Gaussian and the same likelihood is used, the frequentist and Bayesian approaches recover consistent parameter uncertainty estimates. If the parameter posterior has significant higher moments, the covariance-only frequentist approach becomes unreliable and the Bayesian approach should be used. Empirical coverage can serve as an important internal check for uncertainty estimation, providing red flags for uncertainty analyses., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. It is a fascinating phenomenon in nuclear physics that states with a pronounced few-body structure can emerge from the complex dynamics of many nucleons. Such halo or cluster states often appear near the boundaries of nuclear stability. As such, they are an important part of the experimental program beginning at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). A concerted effort of theory and experiment is necessary both to analyze experiments involving effective few-body states, as well as to constrain and refine theories of the nuclear force in light of new data from these experiments. As a contribution to exactly this effort, this paper compiles a collection of ``perspectives'' that emerged out of the Topical Program ``Few-body cluster structures in exotic nuclei and their role in FRIB experiments'' that was held at FRIB in August 2022 and brought together theorists and experimentalists working on this topic., Comment: This version should match the published one

We review recent progress and motivate the need for further developments in nuclear optical potentials that are widely used in the theoretical analysis of nucleon elastic scattering and reaction cross sections. In regions of the nuclear chart away from stability, which represent a frontier in nuclear science over the coming decade and which will be probed at new rare-isotope beam facilities worldwide, there is a targeted need to quantify and reduce theoretical reaction model uncertainties, especially with respect to nuclear optical potentials. We first describe the primary physics motivations for an improved description of nuclear reactions involving short-lived isotopes, focusing on its benefits for fundamental science discoveries and applications to medicine, energy, and security. We then outline the various methods in use today to build optical potentials starting from phenomenological, microscopic, and ab initio methods, highlighting in particular the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. We then discuss publicly-available tools and resources facilitating the propagation of recent progresses in the field to practitioners. Finally, we provide a set of open challenges and recommendations for the field to advance the fundamental science goals of nuclear reaction studies in the rare-isotope beam era., Comment: This paper is the outcome of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB - TA) topical program "Optical Potentials in Nuclear Physics" held in March 2022 at FRIB. Nuclear Astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated. We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field. Background: Charge-exchange reactions are a powerful tool for exploring nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics, however, a robust charge-exchange reaction theory with quantified uncertainties is essential to extracting reliable physics. Purpose: The goal of this work is to determine the uncertainties due to optical potentials used in the theory for charge-exchange reactions to isobaric analogue states. Method: We implement a two-body reaction model to study (p,n) charge-exchange transitions and perform a Bayesian analysis. We study the (p,n) reaction to the isobaric analog states of $^{14}$C, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{90}$Zr targets over a range of beam energies. We compare predictions using standard phenomenological optical potentials with those obtained microscopically. Results: Charge-exchange cross sections are reasonably reproduced by modern optical potentials. However, when uncertainties in the optical potentials are accounted for, the resulting predictions of charge-exchange cross sections have very large uncertainties. Conclusions: The charge-exchange reaction cross section is strongly sensitive to the input interactions, making it a good candidate to further constrain nuclear forces and aspects of bulk nuclear matter. However, further constraints on the optical potentials are necessary for a robust connection between this tool and the underlying isovector properties of nuclei.

Background: Uncertainty quantification for nuclear theories has gained a more prominent role in the field, with more and more groups attempting to understand the uncertainties on their calculations. However, recent studies have shown that the uncertainties on the optical potentials are too large for the theory to be useful. Purpose: The purpose of this work is to explore possible experimental conditions that may reduced the uncertainties on elastic scattering and single-nucleon transfer cross sections that come from the fitting of the optical model parameters to experimental data. Method: Using Bayesian methods, we explore the effect of the uncertainties of optical model parameters on the angular grid of the differential cross section, including cross section data at nearby energies, and changes in the experimental error bars. We also study the effect on the resulting uncertainty when other observables are included in the fitting procedure, particularly the total (reaction) cross sections. Results: We study proton and neutron elastic scattering on 48Ca and 208Pb. We explore the parameter space with Markov- Chain Monte Carlo, produce posterior distributions for the optical model parameters, and construct the corresponding 95% confidence intervals on the elastic-scattering cross sections. We also propagate the uncertainties on the optical potentials to the 48Ca(d,p)49Ca(g.s.) and 208Pb(d,p)209Pb(g.s.) cross sections. Conclusions: We find little sensitivity to the angular grid and an improvement of up to a factor of 2 on the uncertainties by including data at a nearby energy. Although reducing the error bars on the data does reduce the uncertainty, the gain is often considerably smaller than one would naively expect.

We construct an efficient emulator for two-body scattering observables using the general (complex) Kohn variational principle and trial wave functions derived from eigenvector continuation. The emulator simultaneously evaluates an array of Kohn variational principles associated with different boundary conditions, which allows for the detection and removal of spurious singularities known as Kohn anomalies. When applied to the $K$-matrix only, our emulator resembles the one constructed by Furnstahl et al. [Phys. Lett. B 809, 135719] although with reduced numerical noise. After a few applications to real potentials, we emulate differential cross sections for $^{40}$Ca$(n,n)$ scattering based on a realistic optical potential and quantify the model uncertainties using Bayesian methods. Uncertainty quantification has become increasingly more prominent in nuclear physics over the past several years. In few-body reaction theory, there are four main sources that contribute to the uncertainties in the calculated observables: the effective potentials, approximations made to the few-body problem, structure functions, and degrees of freedom left out of the model space. In this work, we illustrate some of the features that can be obtained when modern statistical tools are applied in the context of nuclear reactions. This work consists of a summary of the progress that has been made in quantifying theoretical uncertainties in this domain, focusing primarily on those uncertainties coming from the effective optical potential as well as their propagation within various reaction theories. We use, as the central example, reactions on the doubly-magic stable nucleus $^{40}$Ca, namely neutron and proton elastic scattering and single-nucleon transfer $^{40}$Ca(d,p)$^{41}$Ca. First, we show different optimization schemes used to constrain the optical potential from differential cross sections and other experimental constraints; we then discuss how these uncertainties propagate to the transfer cross section, comparing two reaction theories. We describe the Bayesian Analysis of Nuclear Dynamics (BAND) framework, a cyberinfrastructure that we are developing which will unify the treatment of nuclear models, experimental data, and associated uncertainties. We overview the statistical principles and nuclear-physics contexts underlying the BAND toolset, with an emphasis on Bayesian methodology's ability to leverage insight from multiple models. In order to facilitate understanding of these tools we provide a simple and accessible example of the BAND framework's application. Four case studies are presented to highlight how elements of the framework will enable progress on complex, far-ranging problems in nuclear physics. By collecting notation and terminology, providing illustrative examples, and giving an overview of the associated techniques, this paper aims to open paths through which the nuclear physics and statistics communities can contribute to and build upon the BAND framework., Comment: 47 pages, 10 figures. Background: Modern statistical tools provide the ability to compare the information content of observables and provide a path to explore which experiments would be most useful to give insight into and constrain theoretical models. Purpose: In this work we study three such tools in the context of nuclear reactions with the goal of constraining the optical potential. Method: The three statistical tools examined are: i) the principal component analysis; ii) the sensitivity analysis based on derivatives; and iii) the Bayesian evidence. We first apply these tools to a toy-model case, comparing the form of the imaginary part of the optical potential. Then we consider two different reaction observables, elastic angular distributions and polarization data for reactions on 48Ca at two different beam energies. Results: For the toy-model case, we find significant discrimination power in the sensitivities and the Bayesian evidence, showing clearly that the volume imaginary term is more useful to describe scattering at higher energies. When comparing between elastic cross sections and polarization data using realistic optical models, sensitivity studies indicate that both observables are roughly equally sensitive but the variability of the optical model parameters is strongly angle dependent. The Bayesian evidence shows some variability between the two observables, but the Bayes factor obtained is not sufficient to discriminate between angular distributions and polarization. Conclusions: From the cases considered, we conclude that in general elastic scattering angular distributions have similar impact in constraining the optical potential parameters compared to the polarization data. The angular ranges for the optimum experimental constraints can vary significantly with the observable considered.

This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program "From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory". One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. Angle-integrated cross-section measurements of the $^{56}$Ni(d,n) and (d,p) stripping reactions have been performed to determine the single-particle strengths of low-lying excited states in the mirror nuclei pair $^{57}$Cu-$^{57}$Ni situated adjacent to the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The reactions were studied in inverse kinematics utilizing a beam of radioactive $^{56}$Ni ions in conjunction with the GRETINA $\gamma$-array. Spectroscopic factors are compared with new shell-model calculations using a full $pf$ model space with the GPFX1A Hamiltonian for the isospin-conserving strong interaction plus Coulomb and charge-dependent Hamiltonians. These results were used to set new constraints on the $^{56}$Ni(p,$\gamma$)$^{57}$Cu reaction rate for explosive burning conditions in x-ray bursts, where $^{56}$Ni represents a key waiting point in the astrophysical rp-process., Comment: Final version accepted and published. 5 pages, 2 figures

{\bf Background} Deuteron induced reactions are widely used to probe nuclear structure and astrophysical information. Those (d,p) reactions may be viewed as three-body reactions and described with Faddeev techniques. {\bf Purpose} Faddeev-AGS equations in momentum space have a long tradition of utilizing separable interactions in order to arrive at sets of coupled integral equations in one variable. However, it needs to be demonstrated that observables calculated based on separable interactions agree exactly with those based on nonseparable forces. {\bf Methods} Momentum space AGS equations are solved with separable and nonseparable forces as coupled integral equations. {\bf Results} Deuteron-alpha scattering is calculated via momentum space AGS equations using the CD-Bonn neutron-proton force and a Woods-Saxon type neutron(proton)-$^4$He force, for which the Pauli-forbidden S-wave bound state is projected out. Elastic as well as breakup observables are calculated and compared to results in which the interactions in the two-body sub-systems are represented by separable interactions derived in the Ernst-Shakin-Thaler (EST) framework. {\bf Conclusions} We find that the calculations based on the separable representation of the interactions and the original interactions give results that are in excellent agreement. Specifically, integrated cross sections and angular distributions for elastic scattering agree within $\approx$ 1\%, which is well below typical experimental errors. In addition, the five-fold differential cross sections corresponding to breakup of the deuteron agree extremely well.

The $^{23}$Al($p,\gamma$)$^{24}$Si reaction is among the most important reactions driving the energy generation in Type-I X-ray bursts. However, the present reaction-rate uncertainty limits constraints on neutron star properties that can be achieved with burst model-observation comparisons. Here, we present a novel technique for constraining this important reaction by combining the GRETINA array with the neutron detector LENDA coupled to the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The $^{23}$Al($d,n$) reaction was used to populate the astrophysically important states in $^{24}$Si. This enables a measurement in complete kinematics for extracting all relevant inputs necessary to calculate the reaction rate. For the first time, a predicted close-lying doublet of a 2$_2^+$ and (4$_1^+$,0$_2^+$) state in $^{24}$Si was disentangled, finally resolving conflicting results from two previous measurements. Moreover, it was possible to extract spectroscopic factors using GRETINA and LENDA simultaneously. This new technique may be used to constrain other important reaction rates for various astrophysical scenarios.

Until recently, uncertainty quantification in low energy nuclear theory was typically performed using frequentist approaches. However in the last few years, the field has shifted toward Bayesian statistics for evaluating confidence intervals. Although there are statistical arguments to prefer the Bayesian approach, no direct comparison is available. In this work, we compare, directly and systematically, the frequentist and Bayesian approaches to quantifying uncertainties in direct nuclear reactions. Starting from identical initial assumptions, we determine confidence intervals associated with the elastic and the transfer process for both methods, which are evaluated against data via a comparison of the empirical coverage probabilities. Expectedly, the frequentist approach is not as flexible as the Bayesian approach in exploring parameter space and often ends up in a different minimum. We also show that the two methods produce significantly different correlations. In the end, the frequentist approach produces significantly narrower uncertainties on the considered observables than the Bayesian. Our study demonstrates that the uncertainties on the reaction observables considered here within the Bayesian approach represent reality more accurately than the much narrower uncertainties obtained using the standard frequentist approach., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. A new framework for $A(d,p)B$ reactions is introduced by merging the microscopic approach to computing the properties of the nucleon-target systems and the three-body $n+p+A$ reaction formalism, thus providing a consistent link between the reaction cross sections and the underlying microscopic structure. In this first step toward a full microscopic description, we focus on the inclusion of the neutron-target microscopic properties. The properties of the neutron-target subsystem are encapsulated in the Green's function which is computed with the Coupled Cluster theory using a chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions. Subsequently, this many-body information is introduced in the few-body Green's Function Transfer approach to $(d,p)$ reactions. Our benchmarks on stable targets $^{40,48}$Ca show an excellent agreement with the data. We then proceed to make specific predictions for $(d,p)$ on neutron rich $^{52,54}$Ca isotopes. These predictions are directly relevant to testing the new magic numbers $N=32,34$ and are expected to be feasible in the first campaign of the projected FRIB facility., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, revised version. Recent work has studied the uncertainty in predictions for A(d,p)B reactions using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA), coming from the parameterization of the effective dA interactions [Lovell et al., Phys. Rev. C 95, 024611]. There are different levels of sophistication in theories for one-nucleon transfer reactions, including the adiabatic wave approximation (ADWA) which takes deuteron breakup into account to all orders. In this work, we quantify the uncertainties associated with the ADWA method that come from the parameterization of the NA interactions, and compare ADWA with DWBA. We use nucleon elastic-scattering data on a wide variety of targets to constrain the optical potential input to the ADWA theory. Pulling from the $\chi^2$-distribution, we obtain 95% confidence plots for the elastic distributions. From the resulting parameters, we predict 95% confidence bands for the (d,p) transfer cross sections. Results obtained with the uncorrelated $\chi^2$ are compared to those using the correlated $\chi^2$ of Lovell et al. We also repeat the DWBA calculations for the same reactions for comparison purposes. We find that NA elastic scattering data provides a significant constraint to the interactions, and, when the uncertainties are propagated to the transfer reactions using ADWA, predictions are consistent with the transfer data. The angular distributions for ADWA differ from those predicted by DWBA, particularly at small angles. Confidence bands obtained using the uncorrelated $\chi^2$-function are unrealistically narrow and become much wider when the correlated $\chi^2$-function is considered. For most cases, the uncertainty bands obtained in ADWA are narrower than DWBA, when using elastic data of similar quality and range. However, given the large uncertainties predicted from the correlated $\chi^2$-function, the transfer data cannot discriminate between these two methods., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We treat ${}^6$Li as an effective three-body ($n$-$p$-$\alpha$) system and compute the $d$-$\alpha$ $S-$wave scattering length and three-body separation energy of ${}^6$Li for a wide variety of nucleon-nucleon and $\alpha$-nucleon potentials which have the same (or nearly the same) phase shifts. The Coulomb interaction in the $p$-$\alpha$ subsystem is omitted. The results of all calculations lie on a one-parameter curve in the plane defined by the $d$-$\alpha$ $S-$wave scattering length and the amount by which ${}^6$Li is bound with respect to the $n$-$p$-$\alpha$ threshold. We argue that these aspects of the $n$-$p$-$\alpha$ system can be understood using few-body universality and that ${}^6$Li can thus usefully be thought of as a two-nucleon halo nucleus.

We construct nucleonic microscopic optical potentials by combining the Green's function approach with the coupled-cluster method for $\rm{^{40}Ca}$ and $\rm{^{48}Ca}$. For the computation of the ground-state of $\rm{^{40}Ca}$ and $\rm{^{48}Ca}$, we use the coupled-cluster method in the singles-and-doubles approximation, while for the A = $\pm 1$ nuclei we use particle-attached/removed equation-of-motion method truncated at two-particle-one-hole and one-particle-two-hole excitations, respectively. Our calculations are based on the chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction $\rm{NNLO_{sat}}$, which reproduces the charge radii of $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca, and the chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction $\rm{NNLO_{opt}}$. In all cases considered here, we observe that the overall form of the neutron scattering cross section is reproduced for both interactions, but the imaginary part of the potential, which reflects the loss of flux in the elastic channel, is negligible. The latter points to neglected many-body correlations that would appear beyond the coupled-cluster truncation level considered in this work. We show that, by artificially increasing the parameter $\eta$ in the Green's function, practical results can be further improved., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, typos corrected, accepted for publication in Phys. Being able to rigorously quantify the uncertainties in reaction models is crucial to moving this field forward. Even though Bayesian methods are becoming increasingly popular in nuclear theory, they are yet to be implemented and applied in reaction theory problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate, using Bayesian methods, the uncertainties in the optical potentials generated from fits to elastic scattering data and the subsequent uncertainties in the transfer predictions. We also study the differences in two reaction models where the parameters are constrained in a similar manner, as well as the impact of reducing the experimental error bars on the data used to constrain the parameters. We use Bayes' Theorem combined with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to determine posterior distributions for the parameters of the optical model, constrained by neutron-, proton-, and/or deuteron-target elastic scattering. These potentials are then used to predict transfer cross sections within the adiabatic wave approximation or the distorted-wave Born approximation. We study a number of reactions involving deuteron projectiles with energies in the range of $10-25$ MeV/u on targets with mass $A=48-208$. The case of $^{48}$Ca(d,p)$^{49}$Ca transfer to the ground state is described in detail. A comparative study of the effect of the size of experimental errors is also performed. Five transfer reactions are studied, and their results compiled in order to systematically identify trends. Uncertainties in transfer cross sections can vary significantly (25-100\%) depending on the reaction. While these uncertainties are reduced when smaller experimental error bars are used to constrain the potentials, this reduction is not trivially related to the error reduction. Recently a variety of studies have shown the importance of including non-locality in the description of reactions. The goal of this work is to revisit the phenomenological approach to determining non-local optical potentials from elastic scattering. We perform a $\chi^2$ analysis of neutron elastic scattering data off $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb at energies $E \approx 5-40$ MeV, assuming a Perey and Buck or Tian, Pang, and Ma non-local form for the optical potential. We introduce energy and asymmetry dependencies in the imaginary part of the potential and refit the data to obtain a global parameterization. Independently of the starting point in the minimization procedure, an energy dependence in the imaginary depth is required for a good description of the data across the included energy range. We present two parameterizations, both of which represent an improvement over the original potentials for the fitted nuclei as well as for other nuclei not included in our fit. Our results show that, even when including the standard Gaussian non-locality in optical potentials, a significant energy dependence is required to describe elastic-scattering data., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phys. {\bf Background:} Deuteron induced reactions are widely used to probe nuclear structure and astrophysical information. Those (d,p) reactions may be viewed as three-body reactions and described with Faddeev techniques. {\bf Purpose:} Faddeev equations in momentum space have a long tradition of utilizing separable interactions in order to arrive at sets of coupled integral equations in one variable. However, it needs to be demonstrated that their solution based on separable interactions agrees exactly with solutions based on non-separable forces. {\bf Results:} The ground state of $^6$Li is calculated via momentum space Faddeev equations using the CD-Bonn neutron-proton force and a Woods-Saxon type neutron(proton)-$^4$He force. For the latter the Pauli-forbidden $S$-wave bound state is projected out. This result is compared to a calculation in which the interactions in the two-body subsystems are represented by separable interactions derived in the Ernst-Shakin-Thaler framework. {\bf Conclusions:} We find that calculations based on the separable representation of the interactions and the original interactions give results that agree to four significant figures for the binding energy, provided an off-shell extension of the EST representation is employed in both subsystems. The momentum distributions computed in both approaches also fully agree with each other.

We present an account of the current status of the theoretical treatment of inclusive $(d,p)$ reactions in the breakup-fusion formalism, pointing to some applications and making the connection with current experimental capabilities. Three independent implementations of the reaction formalism have been recently developed, making use of different numerical strategies. The codes also originally relied on two different but equivalent representations, namely the prior (Udagawa-Tamura, UT) and the post (Ichimura-Austern-Vincent, IAV) representations. The different implementations have been benchmarked, and then applied to the Ca isotopic chain. The neutron-Ca propagator is described in the Dispersive Optical Model (DOM) framework, and the interplay between elastic breakup (EB) and non-elastic breakup (NEB) is studied for three Ca isotopes at two different bombarding energies. The accuracy of the description of different reaction observables is assessed by comparing with experimental data of $(d,p)$ on $^{40,48}$Ca. We discuss the predictions of the model for the extreme case of an isotope ($^{60}$Ca) currently unavailable experimentally, though possibly available in future facilities (nominally within production reach at FRIB). We explore the use of $(d,p)$ reactions as surrogates for $(n,\gamma)$ processes, by using the formalism to describe the compound nucleus formation in a $(d,p\gamma)$ reaction as a function of excitation energy, spin, and parity. The subsequent decay is then computed within a Hauser-Feshbach formalism. Comparisons between the $(d,p\gamma)$ and $(n,\gamma)$ induced gamma decay spectra are discussed to inform efforts to infer neutron captures from $(d,p\gamma)$ reactions. Finally, we identify areas of opportunity for future developments, and discuss a possible path toward a predictive reaction theory.

The low-lying energy levels of proton-rich $^{56}$Cu have been extracted using in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy with the state-of-the-art $\gamma$-ray tracking array GRETINA in conjunction with the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. Excited states in $^{56}$Cu serve as resonances in the $^{55}$Ni(p,$\gamma$)$^{56}$Cu reaction, which is a part of the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts. To resolve existing ambiguities in the reaction Q-value, a more localized IMME mass fit is used resulting in $Q=639\pm82$~keV. We derive the first experimentally-constrained thermonuclear reaction rate for $^{55}$Ni(p,$\gamma$)$^{56}$Cu. We find that, with this new rate, the rp-process may bypass the $^{56}$Ni waiting point via the $^{55}$Ni(p,$\gamma$) reaction for typical x-ray burst conditions with a branching of up to $\sim$40$\%$. We also identify additional nuclear physics uncertainties that need to be addressed before drawing final conclusions about the rp-process reaction flow in the $^{56}$Ni region., Comment: 8 pages, accepted for Phys. We develop a method to construct a microscopic optical potential from chiral interactions for nucleon-nucleus scattering. The optical potential is constructed by combining the Green's function approach with the coupled-cluster method. To deal with the poles of the Green's function along the real energy axis we employ a Berggren basis in the complex energy plane combined with the Lanczos method. Using this approach, we perform a proof-of-principle calculation of the optical potential for the elastic neutron scattering on $^{16}{\rm O}$. For the computation of the ground-state of $^{16}{\rm O}$, we use the coupled-cluster method in the singles-and-doubles approximation, while for the $A=\pm 1$ nuclei we use particle-attached/removed equation-of-motion method truncated at two-particle-one-hole and one-particle-two-hole excitations, respectively. We verify the convergence of the optical potential and scattering phase shifts with respect to the model-space size and the number of discretized complex continuum states. We also investigate the absorptive component of the optical potential (which reflects the opening of inelastic channels) by computing its imaginary volume integral and find an almost negligible absorptive component at low-energies. To shed light on this result, we computed excited states of $^{16}{\rm O}$ using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster method with singles-and-doubles excitations and we found no low-lying excited states below 10~MeV. Furthermore, most excited states have a dominant two-particle-two-hole component, making higher-order particle-hole excitations necessary to achieve a precise description of these core-excited states. We conclude that the reduced absorption at low-energies can be attributed to the lack of correlations coming from the low-order cluster truncation in the employed coupled-cluster method., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, a few points clarified, typos corrected, accepted for publication in Phys. Although uncertainty quantification has been making its way into nuclear theory, these methods have yet to be explored in the context of reaction theory. For example, it is well known that different parameterizations of the optical potential can result in different cross sections, but these differences have not been systematically studied and quantified. The purpose of this work is to investigate the uncertainties in nuclear reactions that result from fitting a given model to elastic-scattering data, as well as to study how these uncertainties propagate to the inelastic and transfer channels. We use statistical methods to determine a best fit and create corresponding 95\% confidence bands. A simple model of the process is fit to elastic-scattering data and used to predict either inelastic or transfer cross sections. In this initial work, we assume that our model is correct, and the only uncertainties come from the variation of the fit parameters. We study a number of reactions involving neutron and deuteron projectiles with energies in the range of 5-25 MeV/u, on targets with mass $A$=12-208. We investigate the correlations between the parameters in the fit. The case of deuterons on $^{12}$C is discussed in detail: the elastic-scattering fit and the prediction of $^{12}$C(d,p)$^{13}$C transfer angular distributions, using both uncorrelated and correlated $\chi^2$ minimization functions. The general features for all cases are compiled in a systematic manner to identify trends. Our work shows that, in many cases, the correlated $\chi ^2$ functions (in comparison to the uncorrelated $\chi^2$ functions) provide a more natural parameterization of the process. These correlated functions do, however, produce broader confidence bands. While diproton decay was first theorized in 1960 and first measured in 2002, it was first observed only in 2012. The measurement of $^{14}$Be in coincidence with two neutrons suggests that $^{16}$Be does decay through the simultaneous emission of two strongly correlated neutrons. In this work, we construct a full three-body model of $^{16}$Be (as $^{14}$Be + n + n) in order to investigate its configuration in the continuum and in particular the structure of its ground state. In order to describe the three-body system, effective n-$^{14}$Be potentials were constructed, constrained by the experimental information on $^{15}$Be. The hyperspherical R-matrix method was used to solve the three-body scattering problem, and the resonance energy of $^{16}$Be was extracted from a phase shift analysis. In order to reproduce the experimental resonance energy of $^{16}$Be within this three-body model, a three-body interaction was needed. For extracting the width of the ground state of $^{16}$Be, we use the full width at half maximum of the derivative of the three-body phase shifts and the width of the three-body elastic scattering cross section. Our results confirm a dineutron structure for $^{16}$Be, dependent on the internal structure of the subsystem $^{15}$Be., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. C

[Background:] Recent work found that core excitation can be important in extracting structure information from (d,p) reactions. [Purpose:] Our objective is to systematically explore the role of core excitation in (d,p) reactions, and understand the origin of the dynamical effects. [Method:] Based on the particle-rotor model of $n+^{10}$Be, we generate a number of models with a range of separation energies ($S_n=0.1-5.0$ MeV), while maintaining a significant core excited component. We then apply the latest extension of the momentum-space based Faddeev method, including dynamical core excitation in the reaction mechanism to all orders, to the $^{10}$Be(d,p)$^{11}$Be like reactions, and study the excitation effects for beam energies from $E_d=15-90$ MeV. [Results:] We study the resulting angular distributions and the differences between the spectroscopic factor that would be extracted from the cross sections, when including dynamical core excitation in the reaction, to that of the original structure model. We also explore how different partial waves affect the final cross section. [Conclusions:] Our results show a strong beam energy dependence of the extracted spectroscopic factors that become smaller for intermediate beam energies. Background: In the last year we have been exploring the effect of the explicit inclusion of nonlocality in (d,p) reactions. Purpose: The goal of this work is to extend previous studies to (d,n) reactions, which, although similar to (d,p), have specific properties that merit inspection. Method: We apply our methods (both the distorted wave Born approximation and the adiabatic wave approximation) to $(d,n)$ reactions on $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, $^{126}$Sn, $^{132}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb at $20$ and $50$ MeV. Results: We look separately at the modifications introduced by nonlocality in the final bound and scattering states, as well as the consequences reflected on the differential angular distributions. The cross sections obtained when using nonlocality explicitly are significantly different than those using the local approximation, just as in (d,p). Due to the particular role of Coulomb in the bound state, often we found the effects of nonlocality to be larger in (d,n) than in (d,p). Conclusions: Our results confirm the importance of including nonlocality explicitly in deuteron induced reactions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
