Syntax, the grammatical structure of sentences, is a fundamental aspect of language. It remains debated whether reduced syntactic complexity is unique to schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) or whether it is also present in major depressive disorder (MDD). Furthermore, the association of syntax (including syntactic complexity and diversity) with language-related neuropsychology and psychopathological symptoms across disorders remains unclear. Thirty-four SSD patients and thirty-eight MDD patients diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR as well as forty healthy controls (HC) were included and tasked with describing four pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test. We analyzed the produced speech regarding its syntax delineating measures for syntactic complexity (the total number of main clauses embedding subordinate clauses) and diversity (number of different types of complex sentences). We performed cluster analysis to identify clusters based on syntax and investigated associations of syntactic, to language-related neuropsychological (verbal fluency and verbal episodic memory), and psychopathological measures (positive and negative formal thought disorder) using network analyses. Syntax in SSD was significantly reduced in comparison to MDD and HC, whereas the comparison of HC and MDD revealed no significant differences. No associations were present between speech measures and current medication, duration and severity of illness, age or sex; the single association accounted for was education. A cluster analysis resulted in four clusters with different degrees of syntax across diagnoses. Subjects with less syntax exhibited pronounced positive and negative symptoms and displayed poorer performance in executive functioning, global functioning, and verbal episodic memory. All cluster-based networks indicated varying degrees of domain-specific and cross-domain connections. Measures of syntactic complexity were closely related while syntactic diversity appeared to be a separate node outside of the syntactic network. Cross-domain associations were more salient in more complex syntactic production.

Mathematical modeling plays an important role in our understanding of therapy resistance mechanisms in cancer. The polymorphic Gompertzian model, analyzed theoretically by Viossat and Noble, describes a heterogeneous cancer population consisting of therapy sensitive and resistant cells. This theoretically promising model has not previously been validated with real-world data. In this study, we provide this validation. We demonstrate that the polymorphic Gompertzian model successfully captures trends in bothin vitroandin vivodata on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) dynamics under treatment. For thein vivodata of tumor dynamics in patients undergoing treatment, we compare the polymorphic Gompertzian model to the classical oncologic models, which were previously identified as the models fitting this data the best. We showed that the polymorphic Gompertzian model can successfully capture the U-shape trend in tumor size during cancer relapse, which can not be fitted with the classical oncologic models. In general, the polymorphic Gompertzian model corresponds well to bothin vitroandin vivoreal-world data, suggesting it as a candidate for improving the efficacy of cancer therapy, for example through evolutionary/adaptive therapies.

Patient centered radiology represents a crucial aspect for modern sustainable radiology. The definition of patient-centered consists of a focus on patients' individual values and wishes with a respectful integration in medical decisions. In this narrative review we try to give a practical introduction into this complex topic with the extension to a person-centered radiology, which additionally encompasses values and wishes of radiological and other medical colleagues.Medline search between 2010 and 2021 using "patient-centered radiology" with additional subjective selection of articles for this narrative review.Regarding patients' experiences the main literature focus were patients' fears of examinations (movement restrictions, uncertainty). Most patients would prefer a direct communication with the radiologist after the examination. Regarding interdisciplinary communication the radiological expertise and quality is highly appreciated; however, there was a general wish for more structured- or itemized reporting. Concerning working conditions radiologists were satisfied despite high psychosocial working pressure.Most of the literature on this topic consists of surveys evaluating the current state. Studies on interventions such as improved information before examinations or patient-readable reports are still scarce. There is a dilemma between an increasing radiological workload and the simultaneous wish for more patient-centered approaches such as direct radiologist-patient communications in the daily routine. Nach Abschluss der Untersuchung wünscht sich ein Großteil der Patienten ein Gespräch mit dem Radiologen. In der Kommunikation mit zuweisenden Fächern wird die radiologische Expertise und Qualität insgesamt positiv wahrgenommen, wobei hier der Wunsch nach mehr strukturierter Befundung bzw. „itemized reporting“ deutlich wird. Hinsichtlich der Arbeitssituation in der Radiologie zeigt sich eine hohe Zufriedenheit und Identifikation mit dem Fach trotz hoher psychosozialer Arbeitsbelastung.Der Großteil der Publikationen zum Thema besteht aus Befragungen zur Erhebung des Ist-Zustandes. Wissenschaftliche Evaluationen mit Interventionen wie etwa der verbesserten Information vor Untersuchungen oder der Einführung von verständlichen patientenlesbaren Befunden existieren gegenwärtig nur vereinzelt. Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Real-world-Daten (RWD) und die aus ihnen durch statistisch-epidemiologische Analysen abgeleitete Real-world-Evidenz (RWE) spielen eine vielversprechende und zunehmend relevante Rolle bei regulatorischen Entscheidungsfindungen entlang des Produktlebenszyklus von Arzneimitteln. Ziel der Arbeit Es wird ein Überblick über den aktuellen Stand, die Entwicklungspotenziale und Initiativen zur verstärkten Nutzung von RWE in der europäischen und internationalen Arzneimittelregulation gegeben. Material und Methoden Die Grundlagen für die Übersichtsarbeit sind Originalarbeiten und Reviews aus der aktuellen internationalen Literatur (inklusive eigener Forschungsergebnisse), aktuelle Beispiele aus der regulatorischen Praxis sowie die Einbindung in europäische und internationale Initiativen zur verstärkten Nutzung von RWD/RWE in regulatorischen Entscheidungsprozessen. Ergebnisse Aktuell primär zur supportiven Evidenz bei regulatorischen Entscheidungsfindungen wird RWE aus RWD eingesetzt. Neben dem etablierten Einsatz in Phasen nach der Zulassung (z. B. Überwachung der Arzneimittelsicherheit), werden RWD zunehmend auch in der Phase vor der Zulassung und in der Evaluation eingesetzt. Aktuell wird durch verstärkte Vernetzung der Datenquellen auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene eine Gesundheitsdateninfrastruktur aufgebaut, um neue Möglichkeiten zur RWD-Nutzung zu schaffen. Schlussfolgerung Neben einer wachsenden Bedeutung von RWD/RWE in der europäischen und internationalen Arzneimittelregulation ergeben sich auch neue Herausforderungen zum Zugang zu und zur Analyse von RWD. Die Variabilität und Heterogenität der RWD-Quellen machen die Entwicklung neuer und optimierter Methoden für RWD-Analysen unerlässlich. Auch neue Leitfaden- und Schulungskonzepte für die beteiligten Stakeholder sind essenziell.

Routinedaten der Gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung sind inzwischen ein fester Bestandteil in der medizinischen Forschung geworden und werden zukünftig im Forschungsdatenzentrum (FDZ) Gesundheit einem breiten Nutzerkreis bereitgestellt 1. In einem jüngst erschienenen Buchbeitrag „Das Forschungsdatenzentrum Gesundheit – Routinedaten der Gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung für die Gesundheits- und Versorgungsforschung“ 2 wird die Erfolgsstory dieser Datenquelle und deren Nutzbarmachung historisch nachgezeichnet. Der nachfolgende Beitrag fasst die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Publikation zusammen.

The adequate expression of cytokines is essential for the prevention and healing of bovine endometrial inflammation. This study investigated the intra-uterine concentration of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)1B and its antagonist IL1RA in cows with and without subclinical endometritis (SE). Samples were taken from 37 uteri at the abattoir and 26 uteri in vivo. Uterine secretion samples were classified as showing no signs of SE (SEneg; polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocyte (PMN) < 5%) or showing signs of SE (SEpos; PMN ≥ 5%). Concentrations and ratios for IL1B and IL1RA were measured using a commercial and a newly established AlphaLISA kit, respectively. In both groups, a higher concentration of IL1B was detected in the SEpos group compared with the SEneg group (abattoir: p = 0.027; in vivo p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the concentration of IL1RA (p > 0.05). In uterine secretion samples retrieved in vivo, a lower IL1RA/IL1B ratio was detected in the SEpos group compared with the SEneg group (p = 0.002). The results of this study highlight the important role of IL1B and IL1RA during endometritis and the potential of the IL1RA/IL1B ratio as a possible biomarker for SE.

Constructing the learning outcomes and designing the optimal learning environment are valuable practices in teaching and learning endeavors. Doing so for intercultural learning requires a deft balance of learner inputs and instructional acumen. Assessment of intercultural competence is an essential component since it offers learners and instructors insights on where students are, where they wish to grow, and the success of treatment outcomes. In this study of practice, we examine three years of pre-post mixed-method intercultural assessment data, along with teaching and learning practices and outcomes, to gain insights into how this work of instructional design for intercultural competence can succeed. We also provide suggestions for improvements. The learners were 203 MBA students from the U.S. Pacific Northwest who were enrolled in either a short-term study abroad program or a “glocal” learning experience course. Learners were assessed using the Inter cultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) and the AAC&U VALUE Rubric on Intercultural Knowledge and Competency (IKAC). Results support the criticality of intentional instructional course design based on intercultural assessment data for improved intercultural competency development.

Processing of and responding to various signals is an essential cellular function that influences survival, homeostasis, development, and cell death. Extra- or intracellular signals are perceived via specific receptors and transduced in a particular signalling pathway that results in a precise response. Reversible post-translational redox modifications of cysteinyl and methionyl residues have been characterised in countless signal transduction pathways. Due to the low reactivity of most sulfur-containing amino acid side chains with hydrogen peroxide, for instance, and also to ensure specificity, redox signalling requires catalysis, just like phosphorylation signalling requires kinases and phosphatases. While reducing enzymes of both cysteinyl- and methionyl-derivates have been characterised in great detail before, the discovery and characterisation of MICAL proteins evinced the first examples of specific oxidases in signal transduction. This article provides an overview of the functions of MICAL proteins in the redox regulation of cellular functions.

We extend a two-step lottery model of Craft et al. to test the hypothesis that oak trees pursue a form of within-flower female choice to increase the diversity of fathers. Oak trees produce six ovules per flower while maturing just one acorn. When assuming a random ovule selection - which is a natural assumption in the absence of other hypotheses - observed fertilization patterns in oaks cannot be explained: long-distance fertilization is unusually common, even as nearby oak trees may be absent as pollen donors. Our model demonstrates how producing multiple ovules per flower permits selection for rare, distant fathers. The number of ovules per flower that maximizes paternal diversity increases with the number of trees. We introduce a cost function for ovule production for which six ovules per flower balance these costs with the benefits of diversifying fathers. Using data from two published field studies, 7 of 8 investigated maternal oaks had actual paternal diversity indices (average diversity index of 15.42) that fit the female choice hypothesis (estimated diversity of 14.66) significantly better than assuming a random selection from the six available ovules (estimated diversity of 7.649). A third field study permitted us to compare paternity by distance classes for two maternal trees. Both fit the female choice model better than random ovule selection.

To assess complex social recognition in mice, we previously developed the SocioBox paradigm. Unexpectedly, 4 weeks after performing in the SocioBox, mice displayed robust social avoidance during Y‐maze sociability testing. This unique “sociophobia” acquisition could be documented in independent cohorts. We therefore employed infrared thermography as a non‐invasive method of stress‐monitoring during SocioBox testing (presentation of five other mice) versus empty box. A higher Centralization Index (body/tail temperature) in the SocioBox correlated negatively with social recognition memory and, after 4 weeks, with social preference in the Y‐maze. Assuming that social stimuli might be associated with characteristic thermo‐responses, we exposed healthy men (N = 103) with a comparably high intelligence level to a standardized test session including two cognitive tests with or without social component (face versus pattern recognition). In some analogy to the Centralization Index (within‐subject measure) used in mice, the Reference Index (ratio nose/malar cheek temperature) was introduced to determine the autonomic facial response/flushing during social recognition testing. Whereas cognitive performance and salivary cortisol were comparable across human subjects and tests, the Face Recognition Test was associated with a characteristic Reference Index profile. Infrared thermography may have potential for discriminating disturbed social behaviors.

Gallium phosphide (GaP) is an indirect bandgap semiconductor used widely in solid-state lighting. Despite numerous intriguing optical properties---including large $��^{(2)}$ and $��^{(3)}$ coefficients, a high refractive index ($>3$), and transparency from visible to long-infrared wavelengths ($0.55-11\,��$m)---its application as an integrated photonics material has been little studied. Here we introduce GaP-on-insulator as a platform for nonlinear photonics, exploiting a direct wafer bonding approach to realize integrated waveguides with 1.2 dB/cm loss in the telecommunications C-band (on par with Si-on-insulator). High quality $(Q> 10^5)$, grating-coupled ring resonators are fabricated and studied. Employing a modulation transfer approach, we obtain a direct experimental estimate of the nonlinear index of GaP at telecommunication wavelengths: $n_2=1.2(5)\times 10^{-17}\,\text{m}^2/\text{W}$. We also observe Kerr frequency comb generation in resonators with engineered dispersion. Parametric threshold powers as low as 3 mW are realized, followed by broadband ($>100$ nm) frequency combs with sub-THz spacing, frequency-doubled combs and, in a separate device, efficient Raman lasing. CRMP2/DPYL2 is an effector protein in the semaphorin signaling pathway that controls cytoskeletal dynamics, linking extracellular signals to the formation of axonal networks. CRMP2 is regulated by post-translational modifications including a dithiol-disulfide redox switch. The mechanisms of reduction of this switch were established, the signal-induced oxidation, however, remained unclear. Here, we show that CRMP2 is oxidized through a redox relay involving the flavin-mooxygenase MICAL1 and the peroxidase Prx1 as specific signal transducers. Using molecular oxygen and electrons provided by NADPH, MICAL produces hydrogen peroxide and specifically oxidizes Prx1 through direct interactions between the proteins. Subsequently, Prx1 oxidizes CRMP2. The lack of any components of this redox relay dysregulates neurite outgrowth. Consequently, both oxidation and reduction of CRMP2 require reducing equivalents in the form of NADPH.

The inadequate maternal recognition of embryonic interferon &tau, (IFN&tau, ) might explain subfertility in cattle. This study aimed at modeling the inducibility of type 1 interferon receptor subunits 1/2 (IFNAR1/2), mimicking competition between IFN&tau, and infection-associated interferon &alpha, (IFN&alpha, ), and simulating type 1 interferon pathways in vitro. Endometrial explants (n = 728 from n = 26 healthy uteri) were collected at the abattoir, challenged with IFN&tau, and/or IFN&alpha, in different concentrations, and incubated for 24 h. Gene expression analysis confirmed the inducibility of IFNAR1/2 within this model, it being most prominent in IFNAR2 with 10 ng/mL IFN&alpha, (p = 0.001). The upregulation of interferon-induced GTP-binding protein (MX1, classical pathway) was higher in explants treated with 300 ng/mL compared to 10 ng/mL IFN&tau, (p &lt, 0.0001), whereas the non‑classical candidate fatty acid binding protein 3 (FABP3) exhibited significant downregulation comparing 300 ng/mL to 10 ng/mL IFN&tau, The comparison of explants challenged with IFN&tau, + IFN&alpha, indicated the competition of IFN&tau, and IFN&alpha, downstream of the regulatory factors. In conclusion, using this well-defined explant model, interactions between infection-associated signals and IFN&tau, were indicated. This model can be applied to verify these findings and to mimic and explore the embryo&ndash, maternal contact zone in more detail.

The development of integrated photonic circuits utilizing gallium phosphide requires a robust, scalable process for fabrication of GaP-on-insulator devices. Here we present the first GaP photonic devices on SiO$_2$. The process exploits direct wafer bonding of a GaP/Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$P/GaP heterostructure onto a SiO$_2$-on-Si wafer followed by removal of the GaP substrate and the Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$P stop layer. Photonic devices such as grating couplers, waveguides, and ring resonators are patterned by inductively coupled-plasma reactive-ion etching in the top GaP device layer. The peak coupling efficiency of the fabricated grating couplers is as high as 4.8 dB. Optical quality factors of 17000 as well as second- and third-harmonic generation are observed with the ring resonators. Because the large bandgap of GaP provides for low two-photon absorption at telecommunication wavelengths, the high-yield fabrication of GaP-on-insulator photonic devices enabled by this work is especially interesting for applications in nanophotonics, where high quality factors or low mode volumes can produce high electric field intensities. The large bandgap also enables integrated photonic devices operating at visible wavelengths.

Handshakes are fundamental and common greeting and parting gestures among humans. They are important in shaping first impressions as people tend to associate character traits with a person's handshake. To widen the social acceptability of robots and make a lasting first impression, a good handshaking ability is an important skill for social robots. Therefore, to test the human-likeness of a robot handshake, we propose an initial Turing-like test, primarily for the hardware interface to future AI agents. We evaluate the test on an android robot's hand to determine if it can pass for a human hand. This is an important aspect of Turing tests for motor intelligence where humans have to interact with a physical device rather than a virtual one. Background Bavaria, a large federal state in Germany, has been declared free from infections with Bovine Alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) in 2011. To maintain this status the cattle population is monitored for antibodies against BoHV-1 regularly. Several years ago, infrequent but recurrent problems in this sero-surveillance were statistically put into correlation with the presence of antibodies against Bovine Alphaherpesvirus 2 (BoHV-2). In Europe, BoHV-2 is primarily known as the agent causing bovine herpes mammillitis. However, very little information about BoHV-2 infections in Bavaria is available so far. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine BoHV-2 seroprevalences and to detect virus genomes in potential clinical samples. Results 6801 blood sera of healthy cattle from all over Bavaria were tested for antibodies against BoHV-2, revealing an overall seroprevalence of 5.51%. Interestingly, seroprevalences markedly varied between the North and the South of Bavaria, namely from 0.42 to 11.17%. Concurrently, the previously reported relation between the epidemiologically inexplicable sero-reactivities in BoHV-1 ELISAs and the presence of BoHV-2 infections were statistically corroborated in this study. To detect BoHV-2 genomes a fast and sensitive real time PCR was established. Using a multiple PCR strategy, tissue samples from skin lesions at relevant localizations, corresponding lymph nodes, and trigeminal ganglia from 111 animals, as well as nasal swabs from 918 bovines with respiratory symptoms were tested. However, BoHV-2 genomes were not detected in any of these samples. Conclusions BoHV-2 antibodies were found in samples from bovines all over Bavaria, albeit with an explicit South-North-divide. BoHV-2 genomes, however, could not be detected in any of the analyzed samples, indicating that acute clinical cases as well as obvious virus reactivation are relatively rare. Consequently, the future spread of BoHV-2 infections throughout Bavaria, particularly, after eradicating BoHV-1, has to be further monitored.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients are at risk of renewed disease activity after discontinuing natalizumab (NAT) treatment. Objective: Assessing the implication of T helper 17 (Th17) cells in MS reactivation after NAT cessation. Methods: We monitored frequencies of Th17 cells and interleukin (IL)-17 cytokine levels in blood samples of 57 MS patients, without, during, and after NAT exposure. Results: Frequencies of both Th17 cells and, in part, also IL-17 levels, in peripheral blood increased under prolonged NAT therapy, returned to baseline after NAT withdrawal and became almost undetectable in blood samples of individuals who experienced relapses during the wash-out phase. Conclusion: Assessing the Th17-cell/IL-17 axis might help to predict rebound MS activity after NAT withdrawal.

Wie die ersten Schritte in Richtung Journalismus aussehen konnen und was der Reiz am Schreiben ist, haben uns zwei Kollegen erzahlt, die diesen Weg auf unterschiedliche Weise gegangen sind.

In an effort to tackle the enormous challenges facing the global community, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement were adopted in 2015, followed by the New Urban Agenda (NUA) in 2016. Delivering infrastructure in a sustainable way is a crucial driver in achieving these objectives in India. It is considered vital for building competitiveness, facilitating economic growth, reducing poverty and improving the quality of life of the citizens in India. This chapter reviews voluntary governance in the domain of infrastructure and offers a detailed review of SuRe®—The Standard for Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure, which has a strong interest and presence in India. The chapter argues that SuRe® can foster the potential for risk mitigation and benefit creation of sustainable infrastructure and thus contribute to overcoming the challenges that hinder investments in sustainable infrastructure.

Kulturhistorische Beitrage zum Essen zeigen auf, dass und wie feinmaschige Regelwerke zum raumlichen Arrangement der Essenden existieren, die sich in komplexen Sitzund Moblierungsordnungen und Verhaltensstandards am Tisch niederschlagen, in denen soziale Exklusionen und Inklusionen, Distinktionen und Hierarchien praktisch gerinnen (Barlosius 1999, Baudy 1983, Elias 1936/1976, Eschenburg 1987, Zischka u. a. 1994). In der Positionierung von Korpern und Objekten materialisiert sich der Raum, wie ihn Martina Low (2001) in ihrem Theorieentwurf konzipiert hat.
