Until now, most youth and college student-related appropriate technology events have been held in a short period of 2 to 4 days in the short camp setting, with intensive lectures on appropriate technology and engineering design methodologies, and a platform to develop and present ideas through group practice, or in the form of a competition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development process and application results of the Youth Idea Sketch Contest, which was conducted in the form of a short-term school with a 3-4 month participation period, to suggest the direction of developing an appropriate technology science class program for teenagers in the future. In particular, among the results of the survey conducted after the type of competition for the next program plan, the program development process was examined in detail by analyzing the feedback of the steering committee who planned and conducted the competition. After that, the school distribution and idea topics of domestic and foreign students participating in this competition were also analyzed. In addition, the distribution of the participating teams' domestic and foreign middle and high schools and the theme of the participating teams' ideas were analyzed. In addition, by conducting a survey of incumbent professors and researchers who participated in mentoring to evaluate the overall satisfaction of the competition and analyzing it, it was possible to indirectly grasp the experiences of mentors and students. Based on this competition analysis in this study, it is believed that it will be able to contribute to the development of better youth appropriate technology science class programs in the future.

Adipocytes are crucial components of the tumor microenvironment (TME) that play a prominent role in supporting tumor growth. However, the characteristics of cancer-associated adipocytes (CAAs) that contribute to the pro-tumorigenic niche remain to be fully established. Here, we used adipocyte-specific Beclin1 KO (BaKO) mice to investigate the role of maladaptive adipocytes in promoting tumor progression. BECN1-deficient adipocytes exhibited downregulation of adipogenic markers and activation of YAP/TAZ signaling, similar to the traits observed in CAAs. Thus, we generated adipocyte-specific Becn1/Yap1/Taz KO mice, which exhibit markedly restored phenotypes in adipose tissue, resulting in tumor regression compared to that in BaKO. Further, we observed dysregulation of the BECN1-YAP/TAZ axis in the adipose tissue of mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Treatment with the YAP/TAZ inhibitor, verteporfin, suppressed tumor progression in BaKO and HFD-fed mice, highlighting its efficacy against mice with metabolic dysregulation. Our findings provide insights into CAA formation and its significance in determining malignant TME, thereby suggesting a potential dual therapeutic strategy simultaneously targeting adipocyte homeostasis and cancer growth.

To identify factors that are significantly associated with the intention to quit electronic cigarette smoking (ECS) at multiple, ecological levels among university students.365 students who were e-cigarette users from Seoul metropolitan areas, South Korea.A cross-sectional study through an online survey.Of participants, 62.7% had the intention to quit ECS-17.2% within one month, 14.0% within six months, and 31.5% when the time is right. Factors significantly associated with the intention to quit ECS were identified: "device type," "a shorter duration of ECS," and "having started ECS for quitting traditional cigarette smoking" at the intrapersonal-level; "negative attitudes of either peers or family members toward ECS" at the interpersonal-level; and "exposure to community smoking cessation educations" at the community-level.Approximately one-thirds of university e-cigarette users had no intention to quit ECS. The factors identified should be integrated into university level, behavioral smoking cessation strategies.

Background: Many low- and middle-income countries and international organisations have invested resources to strengthen primary health care (PHC). This study aimed to identify the challenges and unmet needs in the current PHC by assessing the experiences and perceptions of healthcare workers in three townships (Htan Ta Pin, Hmawbi, and Taikkyi) in Yangon, Myanmar. Methods: The study was conducted among healthcare professionals and community leaders in three townships. Adopting a mixed-method approach, a cross-sectional health needs assessment survey was conducted for quantitative data (n = 66), and focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted online for qualitative data. Findings: Enhancing the management and leadership capacity had the lowest average score on the current achievement (2.81 out of 5 ratings) while strengthening infectious disease control service and accessibility was perceived as the highest mean on the priority of intervention (4.28) and the impact of the intervention (4.7). The FGDs revealed that while specific infrastructures and equipment were reported insufficient and necessary, the need for financial support has been the recurrent theme throughout the discussions. Interpretation: Utilising the World Health Organisation’s six building block frameworks, our findings suggest that a long-term targeted financial investment in the PHC system is critical in Myanmar through increasing healthcare expenditure per capita.

Background: University students have been known as having a higher rate of problem drinking than the general population in South Korea. In particular, the university freshmen may experience problem drinking from increased occasions of frequent social gatherings at the first school year as they have increased time to freely use compared to the high school days. Problem drinking among university freshmen may be influenced by multiple factors. The present study aimed to examine the prevalence of problem drinking and to identify individualand family-level factors associated with university freshmen's problem drinking.Methods: A cross-sectional, correlation study was conducted. Participants were 227 university freshmen (70 men and 157 women) under the parenting of mother and father from 10 universities in Seoul. The problem drinking was evaluated by using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. Alcohol Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale and Parental Authority Questionnaire for parenting behaviors were used.Results: The prevalence of problem drinking was 58.6% among university freshmen. An individual-level factor of alcohol abstinence self-efficacy was significantly associated with the prevalence of problem drinking (odds ratio, 0.94; 95% confidence interval, 0.91-0.96) among university freshmen. However, any of family-level factors including types of parenting behaviors were not significantly associated with the prevalence of problem drinking.Conclusions: Alcohol abstinence self-efficacy may be a strong protective factor against university freshmen's problem drinking. University-based alcohol abstinence programs should comprise of nursing strategies including the enhancement of abstinence self-efficacy at the first school year.

Objectives In this paper, we aimed to investigate the evolving debate over border closure in Korea during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, to address the main themes associated with border closure, and to discuss the factors that need to be considered when making such decisions. Methods We collated and reviewed previously conducted review studies on border closures during infectious disease outbreaks to derive relevant themes and factors. Results According to our systematic review on border closures and travel restrictions, the effects of such containment efforts are limited. We suggest considering the following factors when determining whether to impose border closure measures: (1) disease characteristics, (2) timeliness of implementation, (3) transmission delay and the basic reproduction number, (4) globalization and pandemics, and (5) social and economic costs. Conclusions Our assessment indicates that the effects of border closures are at best temporary and limited. Alternative measures must be contemplated and implemented to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in particular and infectious diseases more broadly.

This study attempts to develop and verify the effectiveness of a health promotion program for office workers based on the social ecological model and the World Health Organization’s Healthy Workplace Framework. This study involved 272 office workers of a small and medium-sized enterprise in Korea. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni correction using SPSS/WIN 23.0. Workplace environmental support was provided to all workers, while a 6-month intensive core program based on social support was implemented for the intensive management group. Based on the participation rate, individuals were divided into the core and dropout groups. In all office workers, there were negative changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and job stress during the period. Meanwhile, the intensive group showed significant changes in body mass index and diastolic blood pressure. The study suggests that the organization’s support for a healthy environment and an individual’s continued participation based on social support are essential for the effectiveness of a health promotion program for office workers.

The effectiveness of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines had been shown in many studies in adult population, however, the real-world evidence in the childhood population was scarce. We aimed to organize the collective expert’s opinions on adolescent vaccination against COVID-19 in Korea, therefore to guide the vaccination policy in the setting of available evidence. The Delphi panels responded that adolescents were greatly impacted by the quarantine measures, and COVID-19 is an important health problem for adolescents. Panels responded that in general, the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine overweigh the potential risks in Korean adolescents. Continuing monitoring of available data is needed to provide the best vaccination practices in adolescents guided by the updated evidence.

Introduction: Acquiring sufficient information about cardiovascular prevention is a prerequisite for individuals’ decision making to practice heart-healthy lifestyle behaviors. However, no well-validated instrument currently exists to measure the knowledge about information on heart disease symptoms, risk factors, and benefits of heart-healthy behaviors for cardiovascular prevention targeting healthy people. We used systematic scale development procedures to create a scale of the Heart-Healthy Information Questionnaire (HHIQ) based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills model and recent scientific guidelines of cardiovascular prevention. Methods: Standard scale development methods were used to create items and test their psychometric properties. Participants were 1,315 people without cardiovascular diseases, who were residing in Seoul Metropolitan city. Results: We created preliminary 70 items using a 3-point True/False format with a Don’t know option. The items were two times reviewed by a panel of eight experts in terms of the relevance and clarity of the items, and 54 items were selected by using the cut-off score of content validity index (0.8 or greater). Next, we administrated the questionnaire of 54 items for 1,315 participants, and finally selected 50 items by using the cut-off scores of difficulty index ( < 0.95), discrimination index ( > 10), and item-total correlation (tetrachoric coefficient > 0.2). The Kuder-Richardson formula 20 coefficient for the HHIQ indicated good internal consistency (0.85), and the test-retest reliability coefficient with a 15-day interval also indicated that it had good stability (0.78). Finally, individuals (n = 107) who were informed from heart-healthy education sessions showed significantly higher scores of the HHIQ than those (n = 1,208) who were not informed (p = 0.009). A total score of the HHIQ was significantly correlated with a total score of the Heart Disease Facts Questionnaire (r = 0.61, p < 0.001) and significantly correlated with a total score of the Evaluation Tool for Metabolic Syndrome Modification Lifestyles (r = 0.23, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The HHIQ may be useful to evaluate the knowledge levels of heart-healthy information in the areas of cardiovascular prevention

Ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) is a useful tool to simulate advanced SAR systems with its flexibility on RF system and SAR configuration. This paper reports an indoor experiment of bistatic/multistatic GB-SAR operated in Ku-band with two antennae: one antenna was stationary on the ground and the other was moving along a linear rail. Multiple bistatic GB-SAR images were taken with various stationary antenna positions, and then averaged to simulate a multistatic GB-SAR configuration composed of a moving Tx antenna along a rail and multiple stationary Rx antennae with various viewing angles. This configuration simulates the use of a spaceborne/airborne SAR system as a transmitting antenna and multiple ground-based stationary antennae as receiving antennae to obtain omni-directional scattering images. This SAR geometry with one-stationary and one-moving antennae configuration was analyzed and a time-domain SAR focusing algorithm was adjusted to this geometry. Being stationary for one antenna, the Doppler rate was analyzed to be half of the monostatic case, and the azimuth resolution was doubled. Image quality was enhanced by identifying and reducing azimuth ambiguity. By averaging multiple bistatic images from various stationary antenna positions, a multistatic GB-SAR image was achieved to have better image swath and reduced speckle noise.

InSAR coherence detects random surface change that measures the activity or stability of the interferometric phase of InSAR data. Based on InSAR coherence, NDAI (Normalized Difference Activity Index) has been used to detect mining activity in the open pit mine. To remove the noise contained in coherence values, the newly defined NDAI provides only information due to the impact of mining activities. Mining activity analysis was used to understand the annual activity pattern of the mine, and from that to estimate the pushback design. The activities of the March 5 Youth mine took place in a clockwise direction. It was also possible to observe changes around newly formed surroundings, such as where topsoil is loaded or riverbanks This study is well appropriate for mines where site access is not possible. This method can be applied to other open-pit mine.

Chemokines are key factors that influence the migration and maintenance of relevant immune cells into an infected tissue or a tumor microenvironment. Therefore, it is believed that the controlled administration of chemokines in the tumor microenvironment may be an effective immunotherapy against cancer. Previous studies have shown that CCL3, also known as macrophage inflammatory protein 1-alpha, facilitates the recruitment of dendritic cells (DCs) for the presentation of tumor Ags and promotes T cell activation. Here, we investigated the role of CCL3 in regulating the tumor microenvironment using a syngeneic mouse tumor model. We observed that MC38 tumors overexpressing CCL3 (CCL3-OE) showed rapid regression compared with the wild type MC38 tumors. Additionally, these CCL3-OE tumors showed an increase in the proliferative and functional tumor-infiltrating T cells. Furthermore, PD-1 immune checkpoint blockade accelerated tumor regression in the CCL3-OE tumor microenvironment. Next, we generated a modified CCL3 protein for pre-clinical use by fusing recombinant CCL3 (rCCL3) with a non-cytolytic hybrid Fc (HyFc). Administering a controlled dose of rCCL3-HyFc via subcutaneous injections near tumors was effective in tumor regression and improved survival along with activated myeloid cells and augmented T cell responses. Furthermore, combination therapy of rCCL3-HyFc with PD-1 blockade exhibited prominent effect to tumor regression. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that appropriate concentrations of CCL3 in the tumor microenvironment would be an effective adjuvant to promote anti-tumor immune responses, and suggest that administering a long-lasting form of CCL3 in combination with PD-1 blockers can have clinical applications in cancer immunotherapy.

Objective There is scarce evidence revealing an association between job stress and cardiometabolic lifestyle modification behaviors among workers. Methods A cross-sectional, correlation study was conducted among workers in high-risk and low-risk workplaces by work characteristics. Results Workers in high-risk workplaces had significantly higher job stress levels than low-risk workplaces. Higher job stress was significantly associated with lower cardiometabolic lifestyle modification behaviors (β = -0.14, p = .001). This significant association was evident only for high-risk workplaces in total job stress (β = -0.16, p = .001), including job demand (β = -0.16, p = .005) and job insecurity (β = -0.11, p = .026). Conclusions Strategies for alleviating job stress should be prioritized to high-risk workplaces, and these efforts may concomitantly contribute to cardiometabolic risk reduction.

In the tumor microenvironment, immune checkpoint ligands (ICLs) must be expressed in order to trigger the inhibitory signal via immune checkpoint receptors (ICRs). Although ICL expression frequently occurs in a manner intrinsic to tumor cells, extrinsic factors derived from the tumor microenvironment can fine-tune ICL expression by tumor cells or prompt non-tumor cells, including immune cells. Considering the extensive interaction between T cells and other immune cells within the tumor microenvironment, ICL expression on immune cells can be as significant as that of ICLs on tumor cells in promoting antitumor immune responses. Here, we introduce various regulators known to induce or suppress ICL expression in either tumor cells or immune cells, and concise mechanisms relevant to their induction. Finally, we focus on the clinical significance of understanding the mechanisms of ICLs for an optimized immunotherapy for individual cancer patients. [BMB Reports 2021; 54(8): 403-412].

Background Workers' cardiovascular health can be influenced by individual willingness to practice healthy behaviors. A mobile health management program with a challenge strategy was administered to promote workers' healthy behaviors among small to medium-sized enterprises. Methods A 12-week program consisted of health communication with a challenge strategy was administered to the workers. Results The intervention group showed significantly improved scores for cardiovascular disease-related health behavior (Z = -2.44, P = 0.013), the job stress contributing factor of inadequate social support (F = 4.10, P = 0.049), and the cardiovascular disease-related health status of waist circumference (t = 3.22, P = 0.004), body fat (Z = -2.23, P = 0.024), and triglycerides (Z = -3.04, P = 0.001). Conclusion This study's significance is its potential for increasing the convenience and joy of participating in intervention programs and acquiring health information through mobile platforms, which are easily accessible to the workers.

Expression of immune checkpoint ligands (ICLs) is necessary to trigger the inhibitory signal via immune checkpoint receptors (ICRs) in exhausted T cells under tumor immune microenvironment. Nevertheless,to our knowledge, ICL expression profile in cancer patients has not been investigated. Using previously reported RNA-seq data sets, we found that expression of ICLs was patient specific but their coexpression can be patterned in non–small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). Since the expression of PD-L1 and poliovirus receptor (PVR) among various ICLs was independently regulated, we could stratify the patients who were treated with anti–PD-1 later into 4 groups according to the expression level of PD-L1 and PVR. Of interest, high PVR and low PVR expressions in PD-L1–expressing patients enriched nonresponders and responders to PD-1 blockade, respectively, helping in further selection of responders. Using a genetically engineered cancer model, we also found that PVR-deficient and PD-L1–sufficient tumor-bearing mice were highly sensitive to anti–PD-1 therapy, whereas PVR-sufficient and PD-L1–deficient tumor-bearing mice were resistant to anti–PD-1 therapy. Taken together, our study provides a concept that combinatorial expression patterns of PVR and PD-L1 are key determinants for PD-1 blockade and furthermore suggest a better therapeutic usage of immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs).

Musan mine in North Korea is the largest open-pit iron mine in Asia with the proved reserves of about 2.06 billion tons and more than 9 square kilometers. Open-pit mining is one of the surface mining technique extracting minerals from the surface. Vegetation is rarely distributed at the mining site because the topsoil is removed and the ore is mined directly from the surface. Therefore, it is effective to observe surface displacement at the mining site using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology. InSAR coherence detects random surface change that measures the activity or stability of the interferometric phase of InSAR data. High coherence will be maintained on the surface where there is no movement and only surface scattering. On the other hand, the surface where there is a lot of movement and volumetric scattering has low coherence value. Therefore, using 12-days InSAR coherence images from Sentinel-1 satellites, for example, it is possible to analyze how active the open-pit mine is during the 12 days. Sentinel-1A satellite images were acquired from June 11, 2015 to May 24, 2016, followed by Sentine-1B satellite images from September 27, 2016 to April 21, 2019. A total of 102 SAR images were downloaded from European Space Agency (ESA) portal. There is a gap between May 24 and September 27, 2016 due to the transition of the data acquisition plan. Over 100 12-days coherence data were obtained by applying InSAR. Stable spots and target spots were selected through average and standard deviation of the entire coherence time series data. Coherence values include not only the mining activity but also the effects of perpendicular baseline, temporal baseline, and weather. Therefore, NDAI (Normalized Difference Activity Index) was newly defined to remove the noise and only the coherence value due to the influence of the mining activity was extracted. The degree of activities can be observed by the time series coherence and NDAI images. This study needs other references related to mining activities in order to analyze the mining activities in more detail. This method can be applied to other open-pit mine.

In Korea, children aged 5 to 11 have been vaccinated against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from March 2022. Due to this age group not being at a high risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms, each major country has different, circumstance dependent, immunization policies for children. In this review, the COVID-19 vaccination policies for 5–11 years old children in major countries were reviewed and considerations were presented for Korea, where children 5–11 years old are starting to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Na has been believed to improve the device parameters of open circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF) presumably by increasing the carrier concentration (NA) of vacuum-processed Cu(In,Ga)Se2 films. In solution-processed CI(G)Se devices as well, Na reportedly increases VOC and FF but this improvement is not correlated with the increase in NA, suggesting a different physical mechanism associated with Na in solution-based routes. In this contribution, experimental results on the role of Na addition in solution-processed CISe films and devices were reported, in which Na addition had no influence on NA nor on film composition in spite of the notable increase in the device efficiency. On the contrary, Na was found to mitigate the interfacial recombination by reducing the undesirable surface defects. Along with this understanding, Na addition in our air-processable route resulted in a CISe device with 12.83% efficiency, which is comparable to the current world record efficiency of solution-processed CISe devices.

Objective The aim of the present study was to provide clinical consensus and evidence regarding initial treatment strategies for the pharmacological treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in Korea. Methods We prepared a questionnaire to derive a consensus from clinicians regarding their preference for the pharmacological treatment of SAD in Korea. Data regarding medication regimens and psychotropic drugs used during initial treatment, the doses used, and the pharmacological treatment duration were obtained. Responses were obtained from 66 SAD experts, and their opinions were classified into three categories (first-line, second-line, third-line) using a chi-square analysis. Results Clinicians agreed upon first-line regimens for SAD involving monotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) venlafaxine, or combined therapy using antidepressants with betablockers or benzodiazepines on a standing or as-needed basis. First-line psychotropic drug choices for initial treatment included the following: escitalopram, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, and propranolol. The medication dosage used by domestic clinicians was found to be comparable with foreign guidelines. Domestic clinicians tended to make treatment decisions in a shorter amount of time and preferred a similar duration of maintenance treatment for SAD when compared with foreign clinicians. Conclusion This study may provide significant information for developing SAD pharmacotherapy guidelines in Korea, especially in the early stage of treatment.

Regulatory T cells (Treg) are enriched in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and suppress antitumor immunity; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the accumulation of Tregs in the TME is poorly understood. In various tumor models, tumor-infiltrating Tregs were highly enriched in the TME and had significantly higher expression of immune checkpoint molecules. To characterize tumor-infiltrating Tregs, we performed bulk RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and found that proliferation-related genes, immune suppression–related genes, and cytokine/chemokine receptor genes were upregulated in tumor-infiltrating Tregs compared with tumor-infiltrating CD4+Foxp3− conventional T cells or splenic Tregs from the same tumor-bearing mice. Single-cell RNA-seq and T-cell receptor sequencing also revealed active proliferation of tumor infiltrating Tregs by clonal expansion. One of these genes, ST2, an IL33 receptor, was identified as a potential factor driving Treg accumulation in the TME. Indeed, IL33-directed ST2 signaling induced the preferential proliferation of tumor-infiltrating Tregs and enhanced tumor progression, whereas genetic deletion of ST2 in Tregs limited their TME accumulation and delayed tumor growth. These data demonstrated the IL33/ST2 axis in Tregs as one of the critical pathways for the preferential accumulation of Tregs in the TME and suggests that the IL33/ST2 axis may be a potential therapeutic target for cancer immunotherapy.

Recent advancement of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques require more sophisticated system configurations such as the use of bistatic antennas or multi-frequencies. A ground-based experiment is a cost-effective and efficient way to evaluate those new configurations especially in the early stage of the system development. In this paper, a ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) system was constructed and operated in a bistatic mode at Ku-band where a receiving antenna (Rx) follows a transmitting antenna (Tx) separated by a baseline B. A new bistatic GB-SAR focusing algorithm was developed by modifying a conventional range-Doppler algorithm (RDA), and its performance has been evaluated by comparing the results with those from a back-projection algorithm (BPA). The results showed good performance of RDA at far range approaching nominal resolutions of 9.4 cm in range and 4.5 cm in azimuth, but limited quality at near range due to the approximation used in RDA. Signals from three trihedral corner reflectors (CR) reduced with increasing B, showing a typical bidirectional scattering behavior of CR. This GB-SAR system will be a testbed for new SAR imaging configurations with variations in antenna positions and target properties.

ObjectiveHealth behaviour is one of the major determinants of cardiovascular diseases in working population. This study was tried to investigate the trend of cardiovascular health level, the relationship between continuous health behaviours, and changes in the risk of cardiovascular diseases of male workers by using a nationwide database.DesignThis study is a retrospective cohort study.Setting and participantsThe study analysed data of 57 837 male workers whose personal health examination data were continuously traced using Korea’s National Health Insurance Service–National Sample Cohort 2.0 database.Primary outcome measuresA 10-year trend for all cardiovascular risks and change for the risks according to the consistent performance of healthy behaviours.ResultsThe results showed that the risk of being overweight (adjusted OR (aOR) 1.63, 95% CI 1.59 to 1.68) and obese (aOR 1.51, 95% CI 1.47 to 1.56) increased. The index of cardiovascular risk also increased for high fasting glucose (aOR 1.77, 95% CI 1.62 to 1.95) and high total cholesterol (aOR 1.68, 95% CI 1.60 to 1.76), respectively. The risks of high fasting glucose (aOR 2.09, 95% CI 1.40 to 3.13), high triglycerides (aOR 1.27, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.42) and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (aOR 1.38, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.66) were increased among high-risk smokers. Similarly, the risk of high total cholesterol (aOR 2.20, 95% CI 1.35 to 3.58) and high triglycerides (aOR 1.42, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.85) were increased among high-risk drinkers. In addition, the increase in the risk of being overweight (aOR 2.20, 95% CI 1.83 to 2.65) and obese (aOR 1.90, 95% CI 1.59 to 2.27) were analysed among who had not consistently exercised.ConclusionsSince the pattern of change in the level of cardiovascular risk related to the continuous health behaviours of male workers was identified, the findings of the present study can be used as basic data to develop health promotion policies for the population.

The socioeconomic status (SES) and health behaviors of workers are associated with the risks of developing obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and other cardiovascular diseases. Herein, we investigated the factors influencing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk based on the SES of male and female workers. This cross-sectional analysis used the National Health Information Database to assess the associations between gender, SES (income level, residential area), health behaviors, and CVD-related health status of workers, through multinomial logistic regression. Upon analysis of a large volume of data on workers during 2016, the smoking and drinking trends of male and female workers were found to differ, causing different odds ratio (OR) tendencies of the CVD risk. Also, while for male workers, higher ORs of obesity or abdominal obesity were associated with higher incomes or residence in metropolitan cities, for female workers, they were associated with lower incomes or residence in rural areas. Additionally, among the factors influencing CVD risk, lower income and residence in rural areas were associated with higher CVD risk for male and female workers. The study findings imply the importance of developing gender-customized intervention programs to prevent CVD, due to gender-specific associations between CVD-related health status and health behaviors according to SES.

Leaf architecture determines plant structural integrity, light harvesting, and economic considerations such as plant density. Ligules, junctions at the leaf sheath and blade in grasses, protect stalks from environmental stresses and, in conjunction with auricles, controls leaf angle. Previous studies in mutants have recessive liguleless mutants (lg1 and lg2) and dominant mutations in knotted1-like homeobox genes (Lg3-O, Lg4, and Kn1) involved in ligule development. Recently, a new semidominant liguleless mutant, Liguleless narrow (Lgn-R), has been characterized in maize that affects ligule and auricle development and results in a narrow leaf phenotype. We show that quantitative genetic variation affects penetrance of Lgn-R. To examine the genetic architecture underlying Lgn-R expressivity, crosses between Lgn-R/+ mutants in a B73 background and intermated B73 x Mo17 recombinant inbred lines were evaluated in multiple years and locations. A single main-effect quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 1 (sympathy for the ligule; sol) was discovered with a Mo17-contributed allele that suppressed Lgn-R mutant phenotypes. This QTL has a genetic-interaction with a locus on chromosome 7 (lucifer; lcf) for which the B73-contributed allele increases the ability of the solMo17 allele to suppress Lgn-R. Neither of the genetic intervals likely to contain sol or lcf overlap with any current liguleless genes nor with previously identified genome-wide association QTL connected to leaf architecture. Analysis of phenotypes across environments further identified a genotype by enviroment interaction determining the strength of the sol x lcf interaction.

Advanced driver assistant system (ADAS) is widely adopted in smart cars and it is relied on image recognition algorithm. Hough transform is an essential algorithm for lane detection and traffic sign recognition in the ADAS and influences the detection ratio. The Hough transform is often implemented by hardware due to the heavy calculation. The Hough transform requires evaluation of sine and cosine functions. This paper proposes a computing scheme for the Hough transform. The proposed scheme enables continuous computing of sine and cosine values and designing efficient hardware architecture. The computing hardware for Hough transform is designed and compared with the previous works.
