Comunicació presentada a la Population Association of America. Anual Meeting 2011. Washington (EUA), del 31 de març al 2 d'abril de 2011. This paper aims to provide historical basis to analyze and interpret recent trends and future scenarios of functional limitation among the elderly in Spain. To do so we contextualize the life cycle of this population in terms of living conditions. Such life course, particularly critical periods like infancy and adolescence that strongly influence basic health components in later life, was mostly characterized by structural scarcity and deficits in sanitary conditions. To be sure, all the elderly surveyed by the modern Spanish sanitary system were born before the transition to affluence (illustratively, general food security was only attained by the middle of the 1950s).By applying both period and cohort approaches from health interview surveys microdata, it is aimed to find out whether significant variations in functional limitations have happened within the elderly according to their cohort background and for this subpopulation as a whole. Results mostly show consistent downward cohort trends for females and no solid evidence of worsening is depictured either among males or females.

During the last five decades, Spain experienced a rapid transition towards high levels of development and well-being standards among Western societies. The specific contribution of human capital to the attainment of high development levels and its interaction with wellbeing and its biological components remains understudied. It is ignored to what extend economic growth and modernization would have rendered in terms of health without the improvement of educational status, particularly among mothers. It is also unknown to what extent differences in health status among Spanish regions and social classes are due to the human capital factor. In this paper it is aimed to explore the relationship between human capital formation and the biological wellbeing throughout the 20th century in Spain. The former will be approached by educational levels whereas cohort adult height will serve as a proxy of biological well-being. We will study both intra and intergenerational effects of human capital accumulation on the biological well-being of the Spanish population born between 1910 and 1976. A number of sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics will be used as control variables. The bulk of this work is based on microdata from the waves of the Spanish National Health Survey (ENSE) held between 1987 and 2006. Demographic analysis together with regression techniques form the core of the methodology.

This paper seeks new insights concerning the relationship between environmental conditions and the anthropometric measures of a population. We analyse cohort trends and spatial patterns of physical robustness (height, weight and chest circumference) during the process of economic development in twentieth-century Spain. The data were drawn from Spanish Military Statistics that record male cohorts from 1934 to 1973. Dramatic socioeconomic and demographic changes occurred during that period and consequently the life course of those cohorts witnessed very diverse environmental contexts. Time-cohort series and anthropometric cartography are presented and discussed in light of supplementary data on GDP and infant mortality. Our results show convergence in height and robustness across Spanish regions. This process was especially intense among cohorts born during the 1950s and the 1960s. Spatial patterns -primarily tall-robust North-Eastern regions and short-weak Central-Southern regions- of development persisted at least until the 1990s (cohorts born during the 1970s). These patterns are only partly associated to economic disparities and there are also remarkable discrepancies between height and robustness patterns which moderates conclusions on the evolution of living conditions exclusively approached by height.

The article analyses the evolution of the prevalence of eight health chronic conditions (1987-2009) among adult mature ages (40-64) living in Spain. Harmonized microdata from National Health Surveys of Spain (1987, 1993 and 2001) and from the Spanish sample of the European Health Survey 2009 are used. Mature ages concentrate the bulk of the increase of chronic conditions over the individuals' life cycle. The results show increases in the prevalence of cardiovascular chronic conditions, essentially among men older than 50, but also among older women; this broadens the between-age differences.

- Abstract
Background: Recent reviews by Spanish economic history claim that modern economic growth in that country can be traced back at least to the middle of the 19th century and it would have gained momentum during the last third of that century. Yet some bio-sanitary indicators did not show any significant impovement during the first stages of this economic growth process. For instance, life expectancy remained under 30 years until the 20th century and male cohorts born during the central decades of the 19th century recorded low average heights withouth any consistent trend of improvement until the last decades of that century. Aims: The objective of this work is the exploration of the potential associations between demographic and socioeconomic variables that potentially affected some health and nutritional outcomes in Spain over the last two centuries. It is also aimed at disentangling the effects of physical, medical and nutritional factors that shapedthe health transition in the country. Both, local level and national level data on height and mortality are analyzed for these purposes.

The rise in one-person households is one of the most significant sociodemographic phenomena Western societies have undergone since the mid-twentieth century. It is a phenomenon of particular interest in societies where family has traditionally held an important role in determining living arrangements. In Spain, only 4.1% of the population lived alone in 1991 while currently such percentage is more than 10% and approximately one in four homes are one-person households. This study analyses the process of generational replacement of these households taking into consideration four sociodemographic variables: age, sex, marital status and level of education. The influence of these variables, together with labour status, on solo-living is examined between 1991 and 2011 by applying demographic analysis and multivariate logistic regression models to census microdata samples from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics. Results show an inter-generational increase in solo living, affecting all age groups, as well as a diversification of the demographic profile of solo dwellers in Spain over the last three decades. This trend did not interrupt during the economic recession although being employed increased the probability of living alone invariably. Other factors contributing to a higher probability of living alone were being man and having higher education level (particularly among women). We find notable changes in the sociological profile of these households: an increase in the relative weight of young solo-dwellers and a drop in the weight of widowhood in favour of singlehood. These results are discussed in the context of the social changes that Spain has undergone [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore the regional pattern of nutritional status and its evolution between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in Spain. This period precedes the nutrition transition and it was characterized by the high prevalence of malnutrition. Methods: We use anthropometric data (province-level height means) from conscription in 1858 y 1913 as well as province-level means of height and weight from a large examination held among 119,571 soldiers in 1903-1906. These data are used to construct anthropometric cartography and descriptive statistics. Results: The complexion of Spanish conscripts as indicated by height and weight measures was among the lowest in Europe prior to the nutrition transition in this country. Male average height increased only 1.43 cm between 1858 and 1913. During that period significant changes in the anthropometric geography occurred in Spain which established a nutritional polarity on the eve of the World War I (WWI): inner and Southern provinces exhibited higher incidence of malnutrition whereas provinces in the North and East of the country displayed anthropometric figures above the national average. Conclusion: Spatial inequalities of nutritional status in Spain as reflected by anthropometric polarity may be largely associated with environmental changes. Such changes are related to the modernization and industrialization processes in this country at the time that a relative backwardness (e.g. economic and technological), structural scarcity, occasional subsistence and high exposure to illness persisted. Our results underline the utility of anthropometric data to approach the living conditions of past population and the process of nutrition transition in particular.

- Abstract
Introduction: height variations across cohorts are a proxy of the evolution of living conditions and, specifically, of the nutritional status of a given population. However, the interpretation of the changes in stature sexual dimorphism are controversial. Objective: to test the association between nutritional status and the changes in height differentials between men and women (sexual dimorphism) in the long run (19th and 20th centuries). Methods: three data sources containing measured adult heights are used, namely: -- Data from previous works. -- Data from health examination surveys in OECD countries. -- Data from the NCD RisC Factor Collaboration project. Two indicators are analyzed: absolute sexual dimorphism (men's height minus women's height) and the ratio of sexual dimorphism (men's height divided by women's height). Results: a secular trend of sexual dimorphism is evidenced over the second half of the 20th century coinciding with the substantial improvement of environmental factors that determine the net nutritional status. Among cohorts born at the end of the 20th century in non-marginal environments, the average sexual dimorphism was found to be 13.69 cm --absolute- and 1.084 --ratio-. In comparison with these modern figures of sexual dimorphism, those found among cohorts born during the 19th century are abnormally low, especially during periods of worsening of living conditions. Conclusions: if properly addressed, sexual dimorphism has the ability to report on the degree of environmental stress and its impact on the nutritional status and its differentials across specific groups of the population both cross-sectionally and over time. - Abstract
Introduction: many studies have used anthropometric data to approach the evolution of the net nutritional status but those focused on its socioeconomic differentials over time are still a few in Spain. Objective: to analyze the evolution of nutritional inequalities in the long run by using a sample of male statures from the Spanish towns of Elche and Orihuela. Methods: we use anthropometric and sociodemographic data entailed to conscripts aged 19-21 who were born between 1840 and 1964 and were measured between 1860 and 1984. Anthropometric inequalities are approached by analyzing height percentiles series, variation coefficient series as well as height series by socio-educational status: literate, illiterate and students. Results: there is a solid association between low height averages (poor nutritional status) and more heterogeneous height distribution (higher inequality). The highest values of the variation coefficient as well as the larger differences by socio-educational status are found during the central decades of the 19th century and during the context of the Spanish Civil War and the first postwar decade. Conclusion: nutritional inequalities as reflected by heights decreased from very high levels prior to the nutrition and epidemiological transitions moderate levels during such transitions. Nevertheless, an increase in nutritional inequality is found among the cohorts born during the decade of the 1940s which were fully or partially raised during the advanced stage of the nutrition transition. This paper examines socioeconomic determinants of disability for the Spanish population aged 65 to 89 years, born between 1910 and 1944. To do this, we use microdata from four waves of the National Health Survey of Spain (ENSE): 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2011/12. A continuous indicator of disability based on activities of daily life is constructed which is analyzed by age, birth cohort, educational attainment (socioeconomic status), height (net nutritional status), and incidence of cardiovascular chronic conditions. Results reveal gender differences and a socioeconomic gradient of disability throughout the aging process. The gender gap in favor of men is greater with lower socioeconomic status and disappears within high socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic differences, approximated by level of education, are greater among women under 80 and among men aged 85 to 89 years. A positive association between cardiovascular chronic conditions and disability exists for both men and women and becomes insignificant among the more elderly.

This paper applies a gender perspective to explore the relationship between the position of individuals within the household and the health-related quality of life (CVRS) among the population aged 30 to 64 living in Spain (N=13.258). Microdata from the Spanish sample of the European Health Survey of 2009 are utilized for this purpose. Multivariate linear regression models for males and females are run which include the following controllers: age, labor status, educational level, social capital, nationality and variables approaching individuals’ objective health. Results show that, among females, the position within the household is more influential on CVRS than some other individual characteristics. This is not the case among males. One-parent family is the household position that penalize CVRS the most which stands especially for females. Among males, living (or not) in couple is the most influential factor on CVRS. Gender-related determinants are discussed.

This article investigates the relationship between inter-generational changes and social differences in sexual stature dimorphism and the evolution of living conditions in 20th-century Spain. The results display that SSD remained below modern values among cohorts that were exposed to structural deprivation at pre-adult ages. In addition, lower classes systematically deviated to a greater extent from SSD benchmarks and they reached these benchmarks later in time. Thus in Spain, variations in SSD over time are associated with both socioeconomic changes at a nationwide level and SES differentials at the individual level.

This paper analyzes two possible determinants of disability, birth cohort and socioeconomic status, among Spanish elderly aged 65-89 living independently. We use microdata from the Spanish Health Interview Survey, particularly the self-reported ability to perform daily activities, to construct a continuous measure of disability. Multivariate linear regression models are applied separately for men and women controlling for the following variables: age, birth cohort, educational attainment and self-reported height. Results indicate stability in disability levels across successive generations as well as the existence of a socioeconomic dimension of disability especially among women and within ages 70-79.

NUTRITION , *ANTHROPOMETRY , *EQUALITY , *NUTRITIONAL status , *SPANIARDS , *STATURE , *HEALTH , *HUMAN growth , *NUTRITIONAL requirements , *SOCIOECONOMIC factors - Abstract
This article underlines the relevance of anthropometric history among the disciplines concerned with health and nutrition. The examination of changes on the nutritional status and inequality in Spain focused the 4th Anthropometric History Workshop held at the beginning of 2018 where 18 original contributions were presented and discussed. We first show the ability of human stature to approach the impact of socioeconomic processes and environmental changes on the nutritional status over the last centuries. Then it is proceeded to present the main contents and advances achieved in the workshop. The papers coped with diverse dimensions of inequality regarding nutritional health and its determinants since the end of the 18th century until 2015. Aside of height and weight at different ages, principally adult ones, others anthropometric indicators were analyzed such as sexual dimorphism and low weight at birth. The results illustrate the large prevalence of malnutrition and social inequality in past Spain. These problems persisted over a good part of the 20th century (i.e. stunting) and, they acquired a different nature since the 1980s as the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity reveals. It is concluded that the determinants of nutritional status and health-related inequalities request multidimensional approaches and the dialogue between social sciences and biomedical sciences. Knowing about their dimensions in the past and their evolution over time provides a valuable basis in order to understand current problems in these areas and to address future public policies more adequately on childhood and adolescence. SEXUAL dimorphism , *SOCIAL sciences , *SOCIOECONOMIC factors , *LEAST squares , *REGRESSION analysis - Abstract
Background: Applying sexual stature dimorphism (SSD) to history and the social sciences faces the difficulty of disentangling nature from nurture in addition to the limitations of sources (e.g. small, fragmented or heterogeneous samples). Aim: To investigate the relationship between inter-generational changes and social differences in SSD and the evolution of living conditions in 20th-century Spain. Subjects and methods: Self-reported height and socio-demographic information from individuals born 1910-1979 ( n = 99 023) were drawn from health interview surveys. Weighed least squares regression was used to construct continuous time-cohort series of SSD for the entire population and for specific socioeconomic groups represented by levels of educational attainment. Results: SSD remained below modern values among cohorts that were exposed to structural deprivation at pre-adult ages. Socioeconomic status mediated the correction of these deviations among subsequent cohorts. Lower classes (less educated segments of the population) systematically deviated to a greater extent from normal modern SSD values and they reached these values later in time. Conclusions: In Spain, variations in SSD have been found that are associated with both socioeconomic changes at a nationwide level and SES differentials at the individual level, thus continuous series of this indicator offer new opportunities in the study of living conditions of current and past generations. - Abstract
Introduction: many studies have used anthropometric data to approach the evolution of the net nutritional status but those focused on its socioeconomic differentials over time are still a few in Spain., Objective: to analyze the evolution of nutritional inequalities in the long run by using a sample of male statures from the Spanish towns of Elche and Orihuela., Methods: we use anthropometric and sociodemographic data entailed to conscripts aged 19-21 who were born between 1840 and 1964 and were measured between 1860 and 1984. Anthropometric inequalities are approached by analyzing height percentiles series, variation coefficient series as well as height series by socio-educational status: literate, illiterate and students., Results: there is a solid association between low height averages (poor nutritional status) and more heterogeneous height distribution (higher inequality). The highest values of the variation coefficient as well as the larger differences by socio-educational status are found during the central decades of the 19th century and during the context of the Spanish Civil War and the first postwar decade., Conclusion: nutritional inequalities as reflected by heights decreased from very high levels prior to the nutrition and epidemiological transitions moderate levels during such transitions. Nevertheless, an increase in nutritional inequality is found among the cohorts born during the decade of the 1940s which were fully or partially raised during the advanced stage of the nutrition transition.

- Abstract
Introduction: height variations across cohorts are a proxy of the evolution of living conditions and, specifically, of the nutritional status of a given population. However, the interpretation of the changes in stature sexual dimorphism are controversial., Objective: to test the association between nutritional status and the changes in height differentials between men and women (sexual dimorphism) in the long run (19th and 20th centuries)., Methods: three data sources containing measured adult heights are used, namely: - Data from previous works. - Data from health examination surveys in OECD countries. - Data from the NCD RisC Factor Collaboration project. Two indicators are analyzed: absolute sexual dimorphism (men's height minus women's height) and the ratio of sexual dimorphism (men's height divided by women's height)., Results: a secular trend of sexual dimorphism is evidenced over the second half of the 20th century coinciding with the substantial improvement of environmental factors that determine the net nutritional status. Among cohorts born at the end of the 20th century in non-marginal environments, the average sexual dimorphism was found to be 13.69 cm -absolute- and 1.084 -ratio-. In comparison with these modern figures of sexual dimorphism, those found among cohorts born during the 19th century are abnormally low, especially during periods of worsening of living conditions., Conclusions: if properly addressed, sexual dimorphism has the ability to report on the degree of environmental stress and its impact on the nutritional status and its differentials across specific groups of the population both cross-sectionally and over time.
