Interstellar and cometary ices play an important role in the formation of planetary systems around young stars. Their main constituent is amorphous solid water (ASW). Although ASW is widely studied, vibrational energy dissipation and structural changes due to vibrational excitation are less well understood. The hydrogen-bonding network is likely a crucial component in this. Here we present experimental results on hydrogen-bonding changes in ASW induced by the intense, nearly monochromatic mid-IR free-electron laser (FEL) radiation of the FELIX-2 beamline at the HFML-FELIX facility at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Structural changes in ASW are monitored by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy and depend on the irradiation history of the ice. The experiments show that FEL irradiation can induce changes in the local neighborhood of the excited molecules due to energy transfer. Molecular Dynamics simulations confirm this picture: vibrationally excited molecules can reorient for a more optimal tetrahedral surrounding without breaking existing hydrogen bonds. The vibrational energy can transfer through the hydrogen-bonding network to water molecules that have the same vibrational frequency. We hence expect a reduced energy dissipation in amorphous material with respect to crystalline material due to the inhomogeneity in vibrational frequencies as well as the presence of specific hydrogen-bonding defect sites which can also hamper the energy transfer., 34 page, 9 figures

Interstellar ice grains are believed to play a key role in the formation of many of the simple and complex organic species detected in space. However, many fundamental questions on the physicochemical processes linked to the formation and survival of species in ice grains remain unanswered. Field work at large-scale facilities such as free-electron lasers (FELs) can aid the investigation of the composition and morphology of ice grains by providing novel tools to the laboratory astrophysics community. We combined the high tunability, wide infrared spectral range and intensity of the FEL beam line FELIX-2 at the HFML-FELIX Laboratory in the Netherlands with the characteristics of the ultrahigh vacuum LISA end station to perform wavelength-dependent mid-IR irradiation experiments of space-relevant pure carbon dioxide (CO2) ice at 20 K. We used the intense monochromatic radiation of FELIX to inject vibrational energy at selected frequencies into the CO2 ice to study ice restructuring effects in situ by Fourier Transform Reflection-Absorption Infrared (FT-RAIR) spectroscopy. This work improves our understanding of how vibrational energy introduced by external triggers such as photons, electrons, cosmic rays, and thermal heating coming from a nascent protostar or field stars is dissipated in an interstellar icy dust grain in space. Moreover, it adds to the current literature debate concerning the amorphous and polycrystalline structure of CO2 ice observed upon deposition at low temperatures, showing that, under our experimental conditions, CO2 ice presents amorphous characteristics when deposited at 20 K and is unambiguously crystalline if deposited at 75 K., Comment: Published in the 'Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy'. The linear radical cation of cyanoacetylene, HC3N+ (2Π), is not only of astrophysical interest, being the, so far undetected, cationic counterpart of the abundant cyanoaceteylene, but also of fundamental spectroscopic interest due to its strong spin–orbit and Renner–Teller interactions. Here, we present the first broadband vibrational action spectroscopic investigation of this ion through the infrared pre-dissociation (IRPD) method using a Ne tag. Experiments have been performed using the FELion cryogenic ion-trap instrument in combination with the FELIX free-electron lasers and a Laservision optical parametric oscillator/optical parametric amplifier system. The vibronic splitting patterns of the three interacting bending modes ( ν5, ν6, ν7), ranging from 180 to 1600 cm−1, could be fully resolved revealing several bands that were previously unobserved. The associated Renner–Teller and intermode coupling constants have been determined by fitting an effective Hamiltonian to the experimental data, and the obtained spectroscopic constants are in reasonable agreement with previous photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) studies and ab initio calculations on the HC3N+ ion. The influence of the attached Ne atom on the infrared spectrum has been investigated by ab initio calculations at the RCCSD(T)-F12a level of theory, which strongly indicates that the discrepancies between the IRPD and PES data are a result of the effects of the Ne attachment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are thought to be a major constituent of astrophysical environments, being the carriers of the ubiquitous aromatic infrared bands (AIBs) observed in the spectra of galactic and extra-galactic sources that are irradiated by ultraviolet (UV) photons. Small (2-cycles) PAHs were unambiguously detected in the TMC-1 dark cloud, showing that PAH growth pathways exist even at low temperatures. The processing of PAHs by UV photons also leads to their fragmentation, which has been recognized in recent years as an alternative route to the generally accepted bottom-up chemical pathways for the formation of complex hydrocarbons in UV-rich interstellar regions. Amorphous solid water (ASW) is one of the most widely studied solid phase systems. A better understanding of the nature of inter- and intramolecular forces in ASW is, however, still required to correctly interpret the catalytic role of ASW in the formation and preservation of molecular species in environments such as the icy surfaces of Solar System objects, on interstellar icy dust grains and potentially even in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. In this work, we have systematically exposed porous ASW (pASW) to mid-infrared radiation generated by a free-electron laser at the HFML-FELIX facility in the Netherlands to study the effect of vibrational energy injection into the surface and bulk modes of pASW. During multiple sequential irradiations on the same ice spot, we observed selective effects both at the surface and in the bulk of the ice. Although the density of states in pASW should allow for a fast vibrational relaxation through the H-bonded network, part of the injected energy is converted into structural ice changes as illustrated by the observation of spectral modifications when performing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in reflection-absorption mode. The so-called aromatic infrared bands are attributed to emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The observed variations toward different regions in space are believed to be caused by contributions of different classes of PAH molecules, i.e. with respect to their size, structure, and charge state. Laboratory spectra of members of these classes are needed to compare them to observations and to benchmark quantum-chemically computed spectra of these species. In this paper we present the experimental infrared spectra of three different PAH dications, naphthalene$^{2+}$, anthracene$^{2+}$, and phenanthrene$^{2+}$, in the vibrational fingerprint region 500-1700~cm$^{-1}$. The dications were produced by electron impact ionization of the vapors with 70 eV electrons, and they remained stable against dissociation and Coulomb explosion. The vibrational spectra were obtained by IR predissociation of the PAH$^{2+}$ complexed with neon in a 22-pole cryogenic ion trap setup coupled to a free-electron infrared laser at the Free-Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) Laboratory. We performed anharmonic density-functional theory calculations for both singly and doubly charged states of the three molecules. The experimental band positions showed excellent agreement with the calculated band positions of the singlet electronic ground state for all three doubly charged species, indicating its higher stability over the triplet state. The presence of several strong combination bands and additional weaker features in the recorded spectra, especially in the 10-15~$\mu$m region of the mid-IR spectrum, required anharmonic calculations to understand their effects on the total integrated intensity for the different charge states. These measurements, in tandem with theoretical calculations, will help in the identification of this specific class of doubly-charged PAHs as carriers of AIBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The ordinary Fano effect occurs in many-electron atoms and requires an autoionizing state. With such a state, photo-ionization may proceed via pathways that interfere, and the characteristic asymmetric resonance structures appear in the continuum. Here we demonstrate that Fano structure may also be induced without need of auto-ionization, by dressing the continuum with an ordinary bound state in any atom by a coupling laser. Using multi-photon processes gives complete, ultra-fast control over the interference. We show that a line-shape index q near unity (maximum asymmetry) may be produced in hydrogenic silicon donors with a relatively weak beam. Since the Fano lineshape has both constructive and destructive interference, the laser control opens the possibility of state-selective detection with enhancement on one side of resonance and invisibility on the other. We discuss a variety of atomic and molecular spectroscopies, and in the case of silicon donors we provide a calculation for a qubit readout application., Fano resonances occur in many platforms that have auto-ionizing states. Here the authors show that auto-ionizing states are not required for multi-photon Fano resonance in a Si:P system with significant screening by using a pump-probe method.

The picosecond dynamics of excited charge carriers in the silicon substrate of THz metamaterial antennas was studied at different wavelengths. Time-resolved THz pump-THz probe spectroscopy was performed with light from a tunable free electron laser in the 9.3–16.7 THz frequency range using fluences of 2–12 J/m2. Depending on the excitation wavelength with respect to the resonance center, transient transmission increase, decrease, or a combination of both was observed. The transient transmission changes can be explained by local electric field enhancement, which induces impact ionization in the silicon substrate, increasing the local number of charge carriers by several orders of magnitude, and their subsequent diffusion and recombination. Third-order non-linearities are important because they allow control over light pulses in ubiquitous high-quality centro-symmetric materials like silicon and silica. Degenerate four-wave mixing provides a direct measure of the third-order non-linear sheet susceptibility χ(3)L (where L represents the material thickness) as well as technological possibilities such as optically gated detection and emission of photons. Using picosecond pulses from a free electron laser, we show that silicon doped with P or Bi has a value of χ(3)L in the THz domain that is higher than that reported for any other material in any wavelength band. The immediate implication of our results is the efficient generation of intense coherent THz light via upconversion (also a χ(3) process), and they open the door to exploitation of non-degenerate mixing and optical nonlinearities beyond the perturbative regime., Light: Science & Applications, 10 (1), ISSN:2047-7538

Amorphous solid water (ASW) is abundantly present in the interstellar medium, where it forms a mantle on interstellar dust particles and it is the precursor for cometary ices. In space, ASW acts as substrate for interstellar surface chemistry leading to complex molecules and it is postulated to play a critical role in proton-transfer reactions. Although ASW is widely studied and is generally well characterized by different techniques, energetically-induced structural changes, such as ion, electron and photon irradiation, in these materials are less well understood. Selective pumping of specific infrared (IR) vibrational modes can aid in understanding the role of vibrations in restructuring of hydrogen bonding networks. Here we present the first experimental results on hydrogen bonding changes in ASW induced by the intense, nearly monochromatic mid-IR free-electron laser (FEL) radiation of the FELIX-2 beamline at the FELIX Laboratory at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The changes are monitored by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. Upon resonant irradiation, a modification in IR absorption band profile of ASW is observed in agreement with a growing crystalline-like contribution and a decreasing amorphous contribution. This phenomenon saturates within a few minutes of FEL irradiation, modifying upwards of 94~\% of the irradiated ice. The effect is further analysed in terms of hydrogen bonding donors and acceptors and the experiments are complimented with Molecular Dynamics simulations to constrain the effect at the molecular level., Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Chemistry, such as dissociation of acids, can even be triggered at ultracold “stardust conditions” in the absence of radiation., Chemical reactions at ultralow temperatures are of fundamental importance to primordial molecular evolution as it occurs on icy mantles of dust nanoparticles or on ultracold water clusters in dense interstellar clouds. As we show, studying reactions in a stepwise manner in ultracold helium nanodroplets by mass-selective infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides an avenue to mimic these “stardust conditions” in the laboratory. In our joint experimental/theoretical study, in which we successively add H2O molecules to HCl, we disclose a unique IR fingerprint at 1337 cm−1 that heralds hydronium (H3O+) formation and, thus, acid dissociation generating solvated protons. In stark contrast, no reaction is observed when reversing the sequence by allowing HCl to interact with preformed small embryonic ice-like clusters. Our ab initio simulations demonstrate that not only reaction stoichiometry but also the reaction sequence needs to be explicitly considered to rationalize ultracold chemistry.

The combination of a 4 K 22-pole ion trap instrument, FELion, with the widely tunable free electron lasers at the FELIX Laboratory is described in detail. It allows for wide-range infrared vibrational spectroscopy of molecular ions. In this study, the apparatus is used for infrared vibrational predissociation (IR-PD) measurements of the simple alcohol cations of methanol and ethanol as well as their protonated forms. Spectra are taken by tagging the cold molecular ions with He atoms. The infrared spectrum of protonated methanol is recorded for the first time, and the wavelength coverage for all other species is substantially extended. The bands of all spectra are analysed by comparison to ab initio calculation results at different levels of theory. Vibrational bands of different isomers and conformers (rotamers) are discussed and identified in the experimental spectra. Besides the measurement of IR-PD spectra, the method of infrared multiple photon dissociation IR-MPD is applied for some cases. Spectral narrowing due to the cold environment is observed and rotational band contours are simulated. This will help in identifying more complex species using the IR-MPD method in future measurements. Overall the IR-PD spectra reveal more bands than are observed for the IR-MPD spectra. In particular, many new bands are observed in the fingerprint region. Depletion saturation of the finite number of trapped ions is observed for the IR-PD spectra of the ethanol cation and the presence of only one isomeric species is concluded. This special feature of ion trapping spectroscopy may be used in future studies for addressing specific isomers or cleaning the ion cloud from specific isomers or conformers. In addition, the results of this study can be used as a basis to obtain high-resolution infrared vibrational and THz rotational spectra of alcohol ions in order to detect them in space.

The low-frequency stretching and bending vibrations of the isotopologues CH 2 D + , CD 2 H + and CD 3 + have been recorded at low temperature and low resolution. For this, a cryogenic 22-pole trapping machine coupled to an IR beamline of the FELIX free electron laser facility has been used. To record the overview spectra, the laser induced reactions CD m H n + + H 2 → h ν CD m - 1 H n + 1 + + HD have been applied for these species. As this scheme is not applicable to CH 3 + , the latter has been tagged with He and subsequently dissociated by the IR beam. For the resulting CH 3 + - He spectrum, broad features are observed below 1000 cm - 1 possibly related to vibrational motions involving the He atom. The extracted vibrational band positions for all species are compared to results from high-level quantum-chemical calculations.

The absorption of multiple photons when there is no resonant intermediate state is a well-known nonlinear process in atomic vapours, dyes and semiconductors. The N-photon absorption (NPA) rate for donors in semiconductors scales proportionally from hydrogenic atoms in vacuum with the dielectric constant and inversely with the effective mass, factors that carry exponents 6N and 4N, respectively, suggesting that extremely large enhancements are possible. We observed 1PA, 2PA and 3PA in Si: P with a terahertz free-electron laser. The 2PA coefficient for 1s-2s at 4.25 THz was 400,000,000 GM (= 4 x 10(-42) cm(4) s), many orders of magnitude larger than is available in other systems. Such high cross-sections allow us to enter a regime where the NPA cross-section exceeds that of 1 PA-that is, when the intensity approaches the binding energy per Bohr radius squared divided by the uncertainty time (only 3.84 MW cm(-2) in silicon)-and will enable new kinds of terahertz quantum control.

We present time-resolved measurements of the relaxation between the orbital states of the shallow acceptor boron in silicon. The silicon host was enriched Si-28, which exhibits life-time broadened absorption lines. We observed a wide range of T1 lifetimes from 6ps to 130ps depending on the excited state and the pump intensity. The fastest transients have not been observed previously in the time domain, and they are caused by the phonon relaxation responsible for the small-signal frequency domain line-width. We identify the slower components with an ionisation/recombination/cascade pathway.

The results of the experimental observation of stimulated terahertz emission under optical intracenter excitation of uniaxially strained bismuth-doped silicon are presented. Pumping in the presented experiment is performed using a FELIX free-electron laser. It is shown that uniaxial strain of the silicon crystal leads to a significant change in the stimulated emission spectrum of the impurity.

Cold ion action spectroscopy is applied to record the gas phase infrared fingerprint spectra of mass-selected C5H5N•+ and C5H5NH+ cations using an infrared free electron laser. The structures of the cations are deduced from the experimental spectra using anharmonic vibrational frequencies from density functional theory calculations. A very good agreement between experimental and theoretical infrared frequencies is observed. The dominant structure of the C5H5N•+ cation is assigned to the aromatic pyridine radical cation form. Additionally, a minor contribution of the lower energetic α-distonic isomer is observed. The C5H5NH+ cation is ascribed to the aromatic pyridinium cation where protonation has taken place on the nitrogen atom. The rare-gas tag used in the action spectroscopic method has a negligible effect on the vibrational frequencies. The observed species, with now accurately determined vibrational frequencies, are good candidates for future rotational spectroscopic studies and infrared observations in astronomical sources such as interstellar clouds or Titan’s atmosphere.

We report on a common fragment ion formed during the electron-ionization-induced fragmentation of three different three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fluorene (C13H10), 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (C14H12), and 9,10-dihydroanthracene (C14H12). The infrared spectra of the mass-isolated product ions with m/z = 165 were obtained in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer whose cell was placed inside the optical cavity of an infrared free-electron laser, thus providing the high photon fluence required for efficient infrared multiple-photon dissociation. The infrared spectra of the m/z = 165 species generated from the three different precursors were found to be similar, suggesting the formation of a single isomer. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) revealed the fragment's identity as the closed-shell fluorenyl cation. Decomposition pathways from each parent precursor to the fluorenyl ion are proposed on the basis of DFT calculations. The identification of a single fragmentation product from three different PAHs supports the notion of the existence of common decomposition pathways of PAHs in general and can aid in understanding the fragmentation chemistry of astronomical PAH species.

Gas phase vibrational spectra of [C3H3]+ isomers and their fully deuterated isotopologues measured in a cryogenic 22-pole ion trap are presented. The widely tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments, FELIX, was employed to cover the frequency range 500–2400 cm−1, complemented with an OPO/OPA system covering 2800–3400 cm−1. Spectral assignments for both the linear and cyclic isomeric form (H2C3H+ and c-C3H3+, respectively) are made based on various high-level computational studies. The effect of ion source conditions and different precursors (allene and propargyl chloride) for the preferential production of a specific isomer is discussed. The perturbation of the vibrational band position due to complexation with neon in the recorded infrared-predissociation (IRPD) spectra are also reported in this study.

We investigate the spin relaxation under conditions of optical excitation between the Rydberg orbital states of phosphorus donor impurities in silicon. Here we show that the spin relaxation is less than a few percent, even after multiple excitation/relaxation cycles. The observed high level of spin preservation may be useful for readout cycling or in quantum information schemes where coupling of neighbor qubits is via orbital excitation.

Combining the individual analytical strengths of mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy, infrared ion spectroscopy is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for small-molecule identification in a wide range of analytical applications. Mass spectrometry is itself a leading analytical technique for small-molecule identification on the merit of its outstanding sensitivity, selectivity and versatility. The foremost shortcoming of the technique, however, is its limited ability to directly probe molecular structure, especially when contrasted against spectroscopic techniques. In infrared ion spectroscopy, infrared vibrational spectra are recorded for mass-isolated ions and provide a signature that can be matched to reference spectra, either measured from standards or predicted using quantum-chemical calculations. Here we present an overview of the potential for this technique to develop into a versatile analytical method for identifying molecular structures in mass spectrometry-based analytical workflows. In this tutorial perspective, we introduce the reader to the technique of infrared ion spectroscopy and highlight a selection of recent experimental advances and applications in current analytical challenges, in particular in the field of untargeted metabolomics. We report on the coupling of infrared ion spectroscopy with liquid chromatography and present experiments that serve as proof-of-principle ex- amples of strategies to address outstanding challenges.

The gas phase vibrational spectrum of CH3CNH+ is investigated using a messenger infrared predissociation (IRPD) action spectroscopic method. Vibrational bands were recorded in the 300-1700 cm−1 and 2000-3300 cm−1 regions making use of the widely tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments, FELIX, coupled to a cryogenic ion trap instrument. Band assignments were aided by high-level quantum-chemical calculations, which showed excellent agreement with the experimental data. Effects of the neon atom used as messenger in the IRPD method are investigated in detail. The data presented here will support astronomical searches for the CH3CNH+ ion in space, and provide a basis for high-resolution ro-vibrational and pure rotational studies in vibrationally excited states.

Understanding of the nature and extent of chemical bonding in uranyl coordination complexes is crucial for the design of new ligands for nuclear waste separation, uranium extraction from seawater, and other applications. We report here the synthesis, infrared spectroscopic characterization, and quantum chemical studies of a molecular uranyl-di-15-crown-5 complex. The structure and bonding of this unique complex featuring a distinctive 6-fold coplanar coordination staggered sandwich structure and an unusual non-perpendicular orientation of the uranyl moiety are evaluated using density functional theory and chemical bonding analyses. The results provide fundamental understanding of the coordination interaction of uranyl with oxygen-donor ligands.

International audience; Transient-type stimulated emission in the terahertz (THz) frequency range has been achieved from phosphorus doped silicon crystals under optical excitation by a few-picosecond-long pulses generated by the infrared free electron lasers FELIX and CLIO. The analysis of the lasing threshold and emission spectra indicates that the stimulated emission occurs due to combined population inversion based lasing and stimulated Raman scattering. Giant gain has been obtained in the optically pumped silicon due to large THz cross sections of intracenter impurity transitions and resonant intracenter electronic scattering. The transient-type emission is formed under conditions when the pump pulse intervals exceed significantly the photon lifetime in the laser resonator.

We report the first gas-phase vibrational spectra of the hydrocarbon ions C3H+ and C3H2+. The ions were produced by electron impact ionization of allene. Vibrational spectra of the mass-selected ions tagged with Ne were recorded using infrared predissociation spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap instrument using the intense and widely tunable radiation of a free electron laser. Comparison of high-level quantum chemical calculations and resonant depletion measurements revealed that the C3H+ ion is exclusively formed in its most stable linear isomeric form, whereas two isomers were observed for C3H2+. Bands of the energetically favored cyclic c-C3H2+ are in excellent agreement with calculated anharmonic frequencies, whereas for the linear open-shell HCCCH+ (2Πg) a detailed theoretical description of the spectrum remains challenging because of Renner-Teller and spin-orbit interactions. Good agreement between theory and experiment, however, is observed for the frequencies of the stretching modes for which an anharmonic treatment was possible. In the case of linear l-C3H+, small but non-negligible effects of the attached Ne on the ion fundamental band positions and the overall spectrum were found.

Using the helium nanodroplet isolation setup at the ultrabright free‐electron laser source FELIX in Nijmegen (BoHeNDI@FELIX), the intermolecular modes of water dimer in the frequency region from 70 to 550 cm−1 were recorded. Observed bands were assigned to donor torsion, acceptor wag, acceptor twist, intermolecular stretch, donor torsion overtone, and in‐plane and out‐of‐plane librational modes. This experimental data set provides a sensitive test for state‐of‐the‐art water potentials and dipole moment surfaces. Theoretical calculations of the IR spectrum are presented using high‐level quantum and approximate quasiclassical molecular dynamics approaches. These calculations use the full‐dimensional ab initio WHHB potential and dipole moment surfaces. Based on the experimental data, a considerable increase of the acceptor switch and a bifurcation tunneling splitting in the librational mode is deduced, which is a consequence of the effective decrease in the tunneling barrier., The intermolecular modes of the water dimer in the frequency region from 70 to 550 cm−1 were recorded. Observed bands were assigned to donor torsion, acceptor wag, acceptor twist, intermolecular stretch, donor torsion overtone, and in‐plane and out‐of‐plane vibrational modes. This data provides a test for water potentials and dipole moment surfaces. Calculations of the IR spectrum are presented using molecular dynamics approaches.

Experimental investigations of THz emission from silicon (Si) doped by shallow donors under uniaxial stress along the [001] crystal axis upon selective intracenter excitation by an infrared free electron laser are presented. spectral dependences of Si output integral emission on the pump wavelength and Si laser output terahertz emission spectra have been analyzed. Two mechanisms of stimulated emission have been recognized as inversion-population-based lasing and stimulated Raman scattering. It is shown that uniaxial stress allows to control the Stokes shift and by this the output Raman emission frequency in the active medium. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of broad range THz tuning in doped silicon by means of uniaxial stress.

Superposition of orbital eigenstates is crucial to quantum technology utilizing atoms, such as atomic clocks and quantum computers, and control over the interaction between atoms and their neighbours is an essential ingredient for both gating and readout. The simplest coherent wavefunction control uses a two-eigenstate admixture, but more control over the spatial distribution of the wavefunction can be obtained by increasing the number of states in the wavepacket. Here we demonstrate THz laser pulse control of Si:P orbitals using multiple orbital state admixtures, observing beat patterns produced by Zeeman splitting. The beats are an observable signature of the ability to control the path of the electron, which implies we can now control the strength and duration of the interaction of the atom with different neighbours. This could simplify surface code networks which require spatially controlled interaction between atoms, and we propose an architecture that might take advantage of this., Control of the interaction between atoms and their neighbours is important to quantum information processing and has been studied using two states. Here the authors demonstrate a more flexible control using a three-state superposition of donors in silicon using THz quantum beat spectroscopy.

We present results for the lifetime of the orbital transitions of Bi donors in Si, measured using both frequency domain and time-domain techniques, allowing us to distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous processes. The proximity of the energy of the optically allowed transitions to the optical phonon energy means that there is an unusually wide variation in the lifetimes and broadening mechanisms for this impurity, from fully homogeneous lifetime-broadened transitions to fully inhomogeneously broadened lines. The relaxation lifetime (T1) of the states range from the low 10’s to 100’s of ps, and we find that there is little extra dephasing (so that T1 is of the order of T2/2) in each case.

Our microscopic understanding of intermolecular interactions has increased considerably from the studies on isolated molecular clusters. The intermolecular modes for these clusters are located in far-infrared and terahertz regions and provide a sensitive test of the potential energy surface. Here we report a helium droplet setup (BoHeNDI@FELIX), which is coupled with free electron lasers, FEL-I and FEL-II, at the FELIX laboratory in Nijmegen. These lasers provide tunable radiation in the range of 66–3600 cm−1, covering the intermolecular modes, with average output power of 0.1–0.8 W and spectral bandwidth of 0.2–5% of the central frequency. Mass-selective infrared spectra of propargyl alcohol were recorded in the frequency range of 560–1600 cm−1, which demonstrate the performance of the new setup. The observed vibrational bands could be assigned to the gauche conformer of propargyl alcohol. The high power and micropulse structure of the FELIX radiation allow multiple excitations of the embedded molecules allowing spectral detection with a signal to noise of 10, even in the low-frequency region.

The ac magnetoconductance of bulk InSb at THz frequencies in high magnetic fields, as measured by the transmission of THz radiation, shows a field-induced transmission, which at high temperatures ($\ensuremath{\approx}100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$) is well explained with classical magnetoplasma effects (helicon waves). However, at low temperatures (4 K), the transmitted radiation intensity shows magnetoquantum oscillations that represent the Shubnikov--de Haas effect at THz frequencies. At frequencies above 0.9 THz, when the radiation period is shorter than the Drude scattering time, an anomalously high transmission is observed in the magnetic quantum limit that can be interpreted as carrier localization at high frequencies.

We report spectroscopic measurements of the THz radiation generated by the free electron laser (FEL) FLARE using electron spin resonance at high magnetic fields, which show that the 150 micropulses circulating in the resonator of the FEL have a large degree of coherence. This feature can be exploited for highresolution ESR and spin echo with subμs time resolution.

The interaction of delocalized π-electrons with molecular vibrations is key to charge transport processes in π-conjugated organic materials based on aromatic monomers. Yet the role that specific aromatic motifs play on charge transfer is poorly understood. Here we show that the molecular edge topology in charged catacondensed aromatic hydrocarbons influences the Herzberg-Teller coupling of π-electrons with molecular vibrations. To this end, we probe the radical cations of picene and pentacene with benchmark armchair- and zigzag-edges using infrared multiple-photon dissociation action spectroscopy and interpret the recorded spectra via quantum-chemical calculations. We demonstrate that infrared bands preserve information on the dipolar π-electron-flux mode enhancement, which is governed by the dynamical evolution of vibronically mixed and correlated one-electron configuration states. Our results reveal that in picene a stronger charge π-flux is generated than in pentacene, which could justify the differences of electronic properties of armchair- versus zigzag-type families of technologically relevant organic molecules., It is essential to understand the effect of molecular vibration on charge transport for better design of molecular electronics. Here, the authors test two benchmark aromatic motifs and show how the coupling between π electrons and molecular vibration is affected by molecular edge topology.

Gas-phase organoactinyl complexes possessing discrete An-C bonds (An = U, Np, Pu) were synthesized in a quadrupole ion trap by endothermic decarboxylation of [AnO2(O2C-R)3]-anion complexes in which a formally AnO22+actinyl core is coordinated by three carboxylate ligands, with R = CH3(methyl), CH3CC (1-propynyl), C6H5(phenyl), C6F5(pentafluorophenyl). Decarboxylation and competing ligand loss were studied computationally by density functional theory complementing experiment. Although decarboxylation was computed to be the energetically most favorable process in all cases, reduction from An(VI) to An(V) via neutral ligand loss was often prevalent, particularly for An = Np, Pu, presumably resulting from barriers associated with decarboxylation. Comparative hydrolysis rates of the An-C bonds were experimentally determined, and the chemical properties of these bonds were analyzed by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. The measured hydrolysis rates differed by up to 3 orders of magnitude: the fastest was for [(CH3CC)UO2(O2C-CCCH3)2]-and the slowest for [(C6F5)PuO2(O2C-C6F5)2]-. There is a general correlation between hydrolysis exothermicity and hydrolysis rate. Prototypical hydrolysis reaction pathways computed for R = CH3(An = U, Np) reveal a mechanism in which an outer-sphere water becomes inner-sphere concomitant with transfer of an H atom to yield an OH ligand and CH4, with a net energy release of 170 kJ mol-1and a transition state barrier of 45 kJ mol-1for An = U. Infrared multiphoton dissociation spectra of selected complexes were acquired to confirm the predicted structures by agreement between the computed and observed vibrational frequencies. The experiment and theory results provide an evaluation of the comparative propensities for formation of the organoactinyls as a function of actinide and carboxylate and an assessment of the nature and stability toward hydrolysis of the primarily ionic An-C bonds.

AbstractThe results of the experimental observation of stimulated terahertz emission under optical intracenter excitation of uniaxially strained bismuth-doped silicon are presented. Pumping in the presented experiment is performed using a FELIX free-electron laser. It is shown that uniaxial strain of the silicon crystal leads to a significant change in the stimulated emission spectrum of the impurity.
