Sexting has become a common mode of expression within the digital realm. Understanding sexting in the context of African college campuses is crucial, as it reflects the impact of technological advancements and the interplay of cultural norms, values, and societal factors. This review seeks to provide evidence to inform context-specific initiatives and policies aimed at promoting responsible digital communication and enhancing the well-being of college students within the continent. This scoping review followed the guidelines by Askey and O’Malley. The search for records was conducted in four main electronic databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, Central, and JSTOR. Additional searches were conducted using Google Scholar, Google, and ProQuest. A total of 11 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Results: The findings of this review are grouped under the following four main headings: type of sexting, prevalence, predictors of sexting, and outcomes of sexting. The main types of sexting were sending and receiving nude pictures and sexually explicit messages and posting explicit videos and photos on social media. The prevalence rates for general sexting ranged from 9.9% to 74.4%. Positive outcomes of sexting included increased condom negotiation skills and sexual communication that contribute to safer sexual practices. Negative sexual outcomes included high-risk-taking sexual behaviour such as multiple sexual partners. This review highlights the intricate facets of sexting among African college students, and emphasises the interplay between digital communication, societal norms, and individual behaviours. Policies should prioritise cyberbullying prevention, privacy protection, and ethical technology use.

Abstract Background Gestational diabetes (GD) can threaten the health of both the mother and the foetus if it is not effectively managed. While there exists a growing body of research on self-management interventions for GD, there is a lack of reviewed studies regarding the various self-management interventions in Africa. The purpose of this review is to map the evidence of self-management interventions for GD in Africa. Methods Searches for records were conducted in four major databases, including PubMed, PubMed Central, Science Direct and Journal Storage. Additional documents from Google and Google Scholar were also added. The guidelines for conducting scoping reviews by Arksey and O’Malley were followed. Results The results revealed that intermittent fasting, education on diet, insulin injection, blood glucose monitoring, physical activities, lifestyle modification and foot care were the available self-management interventions for GD in Africa. Most of the reviewed studies reported intermittent fasting and patient education as effective self-management interventions for GD in Africa. The barriers identified in the reviewed studies were either patient-related or facility-related. Patient-related barriers included lack of awareness, and negative attitude, while facility-related barriers included lack of access to education on GD, especially, face-to-face educational interventions. Conclusion It is crucial to consider the cultural and personal needs, as well as the educational level of women with gestational diabetes when creating an effective self-management intervention. Optimal results can be achieved for self-management of gestational diabetes by integrating multidisciplinary approaches.

Abstract Background Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are pivotal tools for malaria prevention in endemic regions like Ghana. Understanding the protective factors and barriers influencing ITN ownership and usage is crucial for designing effective interventions. A scoping review was conducted to identify studies exploring protective factors and barriers related to ITN ownership and usage. Methods This review followed the guidelines by Askey and O’Malley. Search was done in four major databases including PubMed, Science Direct, PubMed CENTRAL, and JSTOR. Additional searches were done in Google Scholar and Google. Peer-reviewed and grey literature were included. Results A total of 24 papers met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Included studies found regional disparities in ITN ownership and usage. Furthermore, included studies reported ownership rates between 97.8 and 28% and usage rates between 94 and 20%. Protective factors facilitating ITN ownership were marital status, higher educational attainment, higher income levels, and being aged 25 years or older. In contrast, the factors for its use included community-level campaigns advocating for ITN use and awareness, individuals with secondary education or higher and those residing in urban areas. Missed opportunities in free distribution exercises and the unavailability of subsidized ITNs at health facilities were barriers to ownership. Conclusion Understanding and addressing protective factors and barriers influencing ITN ownership and usage are crucial for enhancing malaria prevention strategies and achieving sustainable progress in combating malaria in endemic areas. Collaborative and evidence-based interventions are essential for addressing these challenges effectively.

Abstract Background Therapeutic communication (TC) promotes effective patient care, emotional wellbeing, and improves patient outcomes. The purpose of this review was to synthesise evidence on barriers and outcomes of TC between nurses and patients in Africa and to inform future studies and systematic reviews. Methods Search for the records was done in four major databases including PubMed, Science Direct, PubMed CENTRAL, and JSTOR. Additional searches were done in Google Scholar and Google. Results and findings from published studies and grey literature were included. A total of 16 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. This scoping review followed the guidelines by Askey and O’Malley. Results Barriers associated with TC were grouped under five main themes: sociodemographic factors, patient-related factors, nurse-related factors, environmental and health service-related. Age, and religious beliefs were the main sociodemographic factors that hindered TC while stress and inadequate knowledge and skills were identified among the nurse-related barriers to TC. Extreme weather conditions and mosquito infestation were environmental factors while lack of access to TC educational programmes on TC was a health service-related factor that interfered with TC. Both positive and negative outcomes of TC were also identified. Conclusion Continuous professional development on TC is necessary to improve nurses’ attitudes and update their skills to enable them to render culturally competent nursing care to patients.

Introduction Sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant global health burden, particularly affecting individuals in developing countries with constrained healthcare resources. While research on self-management in the context of SCD is emerging, it has predominantly focused on primary studies. The aim of the scoping review was to identify and map self-management needs of individuals living with SCD, the strategies they employed to meet those needs, and the support interventions available to them.Methods and analysis The review was conducted following the Askey and O’Malley’s framework to examine the landscape of SCD self-management research. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Dimensions AI, with additional searches in other databases from inception to June 2024 included. Evidence from 14 studies was synthesised to identify self-management needs, strategies and interventions for individuals with SCD.Results The review identified diverse self-management needs among individuals with SCD, including knowledge deficits, emotional challenges, physical limitations and barriers to healthcare access. Various self-management strategies were reported, such as nutritional management, psychological coping techniques and proactive healthcare management. Self-management interventions, predominantly delivered by healthcare professionals, focused on providing education, skills training and support to individuals with SCD. The outcomes of self-management interventions consistently demonstrated significant improvements across various dimensions, including self-efficacy, knowledge enhancement, self-care practices and psychological well-being among individuals with SCD.Conclusion This scoping review underscores the importance of addressing the diverse self-management needs of individuals with SCD through tailored interventions and support systems to enhance overall well-being and disease management. Healthcare professionals should prioritise the implementation of multidisciplinary self-management interventions that encompass medical, emotional and social aspects of care to effectively support individuals with SCD in managing their condition. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effectiveness of self-management interventions in improving patient outcomes.

Abstract The design of air pollution control policies is a complex decision-making process. Public participation can enhance the legitimacy and effectiveness of environmental urban regulations but does not always occur naturally. This article presents the experience of the use of role-playing in six mid-sized cities in southern Chile to evaluate how residents affected by high concentrations of fine particulate matter perceive the problem and debate possible solutions. For this, the participants were asked to assume the role of advisors. On that premise, they had to prioritize between a series of mitigation measures and reach a consensus with other advisors. The results show the potential of role-playing games, on the one hand, to promote critical thinking and argument skills among the general public and, on the other, to help policymakers in the design of more operative and fair plans of action.

This study aimed to develop and validate the Scale of Attitudes towards Rodents (SARod) to measure public attitudes towards rodents in a Chilean community context. Utilizing an instrumental design, we gathered data from 497 participants using convenience sampling. The SARod, comprising 22 Likert-scale items, evaluates attitudes across four dimensions: Scientistic, Positivistic, Emotional Negativistic, and Cognitive and Behavioral Negativistic. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to examine the scale’s structure and reliability, revealing strong internal consistency (Ω > 0.8) across all factors. Results indicated that higher educational levels and increased interaction with rodents were associated with more positive attitudes, while a greater disposition towards rodent extermination correlated with more negative attitudes. No significant gender differences were observed. The SARod shows robust psychometric properties, offering a reliable tool for cross-cultural comparisons of rodent-related attitudes. This scale can inform targeted interventions and public education campaigns, promoting coexistence and effective rodent management strategies. Further research should explore the application of the SARod in diverse cultural contexts.

In recent decades, several Latin American cities have implemented policy instruments to reduce urban air pollution and traffic congestion such as license plate-based restrictions on car use. Our research analyzes the factors influencing the public acceptance of these urban policies in four cities: Bogotá, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, and Quito. We use semi-structured interviews and digital diaries to examine participants' beliefs and emotions about vehicle restrictions as well as their daily mobility experiences. The study illustrates the importance of three main beliefs in shaping the public acceptance of the measures (perceived effectiveness, perceived fairness, and perceived personal impacts). The results also show a certain resignation on the part of the participants, accepting that the policies are necessary and, to some extent, effective in pacifying traffic and improving air quality in highly populated cities, even if the policies generate certain undesirable distributional and personal impacts. The study uncovers the importance of the local context in understanding why certain urban policies, successfully applied in other contexts, might have lower levels of public support in Latin American cities. L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer la perception que les étudiants de l’Université de Kinshasa ont de la pandémie à coronavirus. Pour ce faire, un questionnaire d’enquête a été administré à un échantillon de 369 étudiants finalistes de l’Université de Kinshasa inscrits pour l’année académique 2019-2020. Les résultats obtenus attestent le primat des connaissances objectives de la Covid-19, de ses causes, de ses conséquences et de ses mesures sur les croyances et connaissances populaires.

As technology continue to define lifestyle and interactions, firms are increasingly seeking empirical evidence on how consumers’ attitudes towards technology influence technology usage. There is inadequate research from the emerging markets on the extent to which demographic factors influence the relationship between consumer attitudes and technology usage. This study therefore addressed this gap by using data from mobile banking users in Kenya to test the moderating role of education levels, age, levels of income and gender. Kenya was preferred study context because of the high penetration and levels of mobile technology usage. Results show that only education levels had statistically significant influence. Theoretical and consumer management implications as well as avenues for additional research are discussed. The study discusses the implications of the study from a theoretical, empirical, policy and industry practice perspective. Future research directions are also recommended.

Le présent travail a pour objectif d’évaluer le niveau de l’auto-efficacité entrepreneuriale des femmes entrepreneures de la Ville de Kinshasa et de déterminer ses facteurs les plus explicatifs. Pour ce faire, nous avons recouru à la méthode d’enquête appuyée par une échelle d’évaluation de l’auto-efficacité entrepreneuriale d’Anna et al. (2000) que nous avons administré auprès d’un échantillon non-probabiliste du type occasionnel de 75 femmes entrepreneures exerçant leurs activités entrepreneuriales dans le secteur informel à la commune de Lemba. Les résultats de l’étude indiquent une forte capacité d’auto-efficacité entrepreneuriale chez les femmes entrepreneures enquêtées. Dans cette même optique, la régression linéaire simple identifie quatre facteurs explicatifs de l’auto-efficacité entrepreneuriale de ces femmes. Il s’agit du niveau d’études, de statut socio-professionnel, de statut matrimonial et de l’âge.

The aim of this review was to describe the effects of air pollution on well-being and quality of life in Latin American countries, following the systematic methods of the PRISMA-P guidelines. A systematic search of empirical studies published in Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, Scielo and PubMed databases was performed. Thus 17 relevant studies published between 1986 and 2021 were identified: 16 with quantitative designs and 1 a qualitative design. The selected studies were grouped into three thematic approaches: mental health (41 %), negative emotions (35 %) and subjective well-being (24 %). The results indicate that air pollution influences various components of well-being, such as satisfaction with life, subjective well-being, perception of quality of life, symptoms of depression or anxiety, negative emotions such as anguish, annoyance, and frustration, among others. However, there were also multiple empirical gaps to be filled.

Malaria poses a significant threat to pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa, necessitating effective interventions like the intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP). However, challenges persist in the uptake and effectiveness of this intervention. This scoping review aims to explore IPTp-SP uptake in African countries, identify influencing factors, and assess its effectiveness in preventing malaria and adverse outcomes in pregnancy. This scoping review follows Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, employing the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, JSTOR, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQuest, focusing on studies post-2000 published in the English language. The search produced 15,153 records, of which 104 full-text records were eligible and 101 papers were included in this review. The findings suggest varying IPTp-SP uptake rates, spanning from 5.3% to 98.9%, with their effectiveness supported by longitudinal studies, randomised controlled-trials (RCTs), cross-sectional surveys, and mixed-method studies. IPTp-SP demonstrates efficacy in reducing malaria during pregnancy, placental parasitaemia, and anaemia episodes, alongside improved birth outcomes. Common adverse effects of IPTp-SP include prematurity and low birth weight. Facilitators of IPTp-SP uptake include education and ANC attendance, while commonly reported barriers included inadequate knowledge and healthcare system challenges. The findings also suggest adverse effects such as prematurity, low birth weight, and maternal and perinatal mortality associated with IPTp-SP uptake. It is vital to strengthen antenatal care services by integrating comprehensive counselling on IPTp-SP and address healthcare system challenges. Community engagement, women’s empowerment, and context-specific interventions are necessary for promoting IPTp-SP uptake and improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Africa.

The structural design of offshore wind turbines is dominated by environmental conditions such as wind and waves, in addition to deadweight loads and loads from operation. Probabilistic combination approaches exist for the ultimate limit state (ULS) to estimate the simultaneous occurrence of extreme meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) environmental conditions at the site of an offshore wind turbine. The site-specific direction of action of the load parameters is mostly neglected in these approaches; the design of offshore wind turbines in the ULS is usually carried out for the most structurally unfavourable directional superposition of load parameters—which is not based on physical principles and wastes potential material savings. The reasons for different load parameters in different directions of action are the influences of nearby land masses and the topographic shape of the sea floor, atmospheric air circulation, and marine current systems. In this paper, wind and sea state data from the coastDat-2 WAM database are statistically analysed for two sites in the North Sea, common environmental contours are estimated using the example of significant wave height and wind speed, and the site-specific influence of the direction of the load parameters on the environmental contours are investigated. It is shown that, depending on the site under consideration, the direction of action can significantly influence the metocean environmental conditions and that direction-resolved probabilistic combination approaches can contribute to a safe and economic structural design of offshore wind turbines.

Abstract Background Genetic and metabolic heterogeneity are well-known features of cancer and tumors can be viewed as an evolving mix of subclonal populations, subjected to selection driven by microenvironmental pressures or drug treatment. In previous studies, anti-VEGF therapy was found to elicit rewiring of tumor metabolism, causing marked alterations in glucose, lactate ad ATP levels in tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether differences in the sensitivity to glucose starvation existed at the clonal level in ovarian cancer cells and to investigate the effects induced by anti-VEGF therapy on this phenotype by multi-omics analysis. Methods Clonal populations, obtained from both ovarian cancer cell lines (IGROV-1 and SKOV3) and tumor xenografts upon glucose deprivation, were defined as glucose deprivation resistant (GDR) or glucose deprivation sensitive (GDS) clones based on their in vitro behaviour. GDR and GDS clones were characterized using a multi-omics approach, including genetic, transcriptomic and metabolic analysis, and tested for their tumorigenic potential and reaction to anti-angiogenic therapy. Results Two clonal populations, GDR and GDS, with strikingly different viability following in vitro glucose starvation, were identified in ovarian cancer cell lines. GDR clones survived and overcame glucose starvation-induced stress by enhancing mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and both pyruvate and lipids uptake, whereas GDS clones were less able to adapt and died. Treatment of ovarian cancer xenografts with the anti-VEGF drug bevacizumab positively selected for GDR clones that disclosed increased tumorigenic properties in NOD/SCID mice. Remarkably, GDR clones were more sensitive than GDS clones to the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I inhibitor metformin, thus suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy to target the OXPHOS-metabolic dependency of this subpopulation. Conclusion A glucose-deprivation resistant population of ovarian cancer cells showing druggable OXPHOS-dependent metabolic traits is enriched in experimental tumors treated by anti-VEGF therapy.

Abstract Aim Critical thinking (CT) is vital in assisting nurses to function efficiently in the ever‐changing health care environment. A CT‐based curriculum framework provides the impetus necessary to drive the acquisition of CT skills of students. Yet, there is no known CT‐based framework contextualized to developing countries where seniority tradition is a norm. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a CT‐based curriculum framework to facilitate the development of CT skills of nursing students in developing countries. Design Cooperative inquiry. Methods Using purposive sampling, 11 participants comprising students, educators and preceptors developed a CT‐based curriculum framework. Results Findings were organized into a framework illustrating interconnected concepts required to foster CT skills of nursing students. These concepts include authentic student–facilitator partnership, a facilitator that makes a difference; a learner that is free to question and encouraged to reflect; a conducive and participatory learning environment; curriculum renewal processes and contextual realities.

This scoping review aims to identify and map self-management needs of individuals living with SCD, the strategies they employed to meet those needs, and the support systems available to them.Methods and analysis The review will be conducted following the Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) 29 framework to comprehensively examine the landscape of SCD self-management research. Searches will be performed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Dimensions AI, with additional searches in other databases and grey literature. Indexed literature published in English from inception to January 2024 will be included. Reference list from included studies will also be searched manually. Two teams will be constituted to independently screen titles, abstracts and full text against the eligible criteria. Data will be extracted from included studies onto a customised data extraction form.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval is not required for this review due to the fact that it synthesises information from available publications. The findings will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Also, the findings will possibly be presented at relevant international and national conferences. This protocol has already been registered with the Open Science Framework. The study characteristics such as design and setting will be descriptively analysed and presented as graphs, tables and figures. Thematic analysis will also be conducted based on the study objectives and presented as a narrative summary.

ABSTRACTBackground Neonatal screening is the first action necessary to identify children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and thus ensure their care. Using rapid tests to give an immediate result to families is a new resilient approach of great interest. These two aspects are essential for establishing an adequate health policy for this disease. This study was undertaken in Kisangani to update the current incidence of neonatal SCD.Methods Heel prick blood samples of 1432 babies born from different racial groups of parents living in Kisangani were collected at birth and screened using a point of care test, i.e. the HemoTypeSCTM.Results The incidence at birth was 2.2% (n = 31; 95% CI: [1.5%−3.1%]) for HbSS homozygosity and 21% (n = 303; 95% CI: [19%−23%]) for HbAS heterozygosity. Compared to a previous study in 2010; the incidence at the birth of the HbSS form has doubled, while that of the heterozygous form HbAS remained almost unchanged. AbstractPrior research on social networks and consumer technology usage has used diverse theoretical frameworks to study the extent to which social networks, in their various forms, are related to consumer technology usage. However, the adoption and utilization of these theoretical frameworks has led to fragmentation of findings, and a lack of consistency in the conceptualization and operationalization of key social network constructs. There is, therefore, a need for a comprehensive systematic review of studies on the interrelations between social networks and consumer technology usage, with a view to identifying the common areas of focus, major weaknesses, emerging trends, and directions for future research. Using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes (PICO) framework, this paper relies on five research questions to examine the various frameworks that have been used to study social networks in relation to consumer technology usage, as well as their shortcomings in terms of consistency in conceptual frameworks, the research contexts commonly studied, areas of study focus as well as emerging trends. The paper concludes by proposing future areas of research, which include: the development of a theoretical framework to guide the study of the relationship between social networks and consumer technology usage; the moderating roles of consumer demographic characteristics; the mediating role of consumer behavioral characteristics; and the influence of technology-enabled social networks in conditioning consumer attitude towards technology and consumer technology usage in different contexts.
