The essay provides news and publishes the text of a short handwritten letter (unknown until today) by Marcel Proust addressed to a «chère Madame». The letter, purchased by Bononi and hung under glass on one of the walls of his library, forms a sort of diptych with a pencil portrait of the great French writer very similar to the famous one painted in 1892 by Jacques-Émile Blanche.

On five occasions in Pauline literature, the author claims to write in their own hand. In three of the five instances, the autograph is reserved for the final greeting and the greeting alone. In Galatians 6.11 and Philemon 19, however, Paul writes more than the letter's greeting in his own hand, as the comment about his autograph appears well before the closing salutations. This article engages one of these texts, Philemon, and argues that it was written entirely in Paul's hand. The letter was a Pauline holograph. To make this argument, the article first assesses the 'cheirographic rhetoric' of Philemon 19. Paul alludes to a type of documentary writing, the cheirograph, that recorded various sorts of financial proceedings. Paul's autographic guarantee recalls validation statements that were integral to this genre of text. Comparanda from the non-literary papyri show that when an author of a cheirograph called specific attention to their own handwriting, the entire document was customarily written in their own hand. The article then turns to the personal nature of Philemon and the abundance of second-person singular forms, arguing that there was a strong preference that personal letters like Philemon be handwritten in Paul's context. For obvious reasons, Keats's biographers have focused primarily on the last five months of the poet's life and on the making of his reputation in the later nineteenth century. They have spent very little time, however, on the two uncertain years that followed the poet's death when his legacy, largely in the hands of Brown, Taylor and Severn, hung in the balance. As Severn was recovering from Keats's death, he fought to establish his own livelihood as a painter and find an adequate means of memorialising his friend. He was preoccupied with two works of art, The Death of Alcibiades and the headstone for Keats's grave. I argue that these artworks represent complex expressions of Severn's grief and in this sense are both memorials, though Alcibiades disguises its aims in a conventional historical painting. In the strong reading of Hyperion embedded in the picture, Severn finds a way of coming to terms with the traumatic aftermath of Keats's death as well as the critical attacks on his poetry. The Mont Saint-Michel abbey in Normandy, France, was an important pilgrimage site in Christianity, and its scriptorium produced numerous manuscripts between the end of the 10th and the middle of the 13th century. The present study investigates the practice of the Mont Saint-Michel scriptorium in the use of parchment to produce manuscripts in the 11th century, based on a corpus of 67 manuscripts produced between 980 and 1100. The combination of information gained from the codicological studies, proteomic analyses and thickness measurement of the parchments, revealed that copyists and/or artists deliberately select the type of skin depending on the content of the folio or the status of the manuscript. Thus, only sheep parchment is used for folios with text or only lightly illuminated manuscripts, while calf parchment is selectively used for the most valued part in the manuscript, such as full-page illuminations and often large ornate letters opening the manuscripts. For the most prestigious manuscripts, which concern four volumes in the corpus, calfskin is used in the entire manuscript, with the occasional addition in the Mont Saint Michel Sacramentary of goatskin, confirming the special status of these manuscripts for liturgical use. An office on the first floor of the Theatre Royal, Haymarket has six images painted directly on the walls that have remarkably survived many redecorations. This room was actor-manager Cyril Maude's dressing room between 1896 and 1905 when he was joint manager of the Theatre Royal alongside Frederick Harrison. To its fullest extent, Maude's exceptional dressing room was adorned with a gallery of forty images created in greasepaint by fellow actors and friends. Famous cartoonists Phil May, Harry Furniss, Bernard Partridge, Leonard Raven-Hill and Leslie Ward left their mark. The greasepaint gallery can be read as an extension of the fashion for collecting autographs; most of the images were signed and some dated. Equally, the gallery acts as a nostalgic scrapbook commemorating productions and recording famous visitors who were granted entrée behind the scenes. There are many studies on technology-supported learning based on cooperative learning in the literature. However, little is known about Autograph-assisted think pair share learning in supporting students' problem-solving abilities for learning in today's technological era. This study aims to examine and analyze the differences in the improvement of students' problem-solving abilities who participate in think pair share learning assisted by Autograph (Auto-TPS) and conventional learning assisted by Autograph (Auto-CL). This study uses quantitative methods with the design used in this study is a nonequivalent control group design involving two groups of students. The sample of this study was 70 students of class IX SMP Al Ulum Medan, Indonesia. Questions to test students' mathematical problem-solving skills found five items. Data analysis includes data processing of test results, namely normality test, homogeneity test, hypothesis testing, and average difference test in the two groups using t-test. The conclusion of this study is that students who study with Auto-TPS get a higher increase in problem-solving abilities compared to students who learn with Auto-CL, with the explanation that the group of students who study Auto-TPS is very good when compared to the group student learning Auto-CL. The article describes the content and the internal textual features of the Greek collection of miracles of St Demetrios of Thessalonica by John Stavrakios in the 13th century, in comparison with the only two Slavonic copies, autographs of Vladislav the Grammarian from the 15th century, which attest the Slavonic translation. The collection is one of the most recent chronologically, reproducing both older miracles reflecting the flexible adaptation of the cult of St Demetrios and the uninterrupted veneration of the saint across wide spatial and temporal boundaries. The comparison of the Greek and the Slavonic traditions does not allow the exact Greek prototype to be identified. It probably belongs, however, to the filiation attested in the 1940 edition of Joachim Iberites, since individual textual samples prove that the Slavonic translation follows its Greek source quite closely. The role of Vladislav the Grammarian and the historical context of the emergence of the translation is discussed. The appendix contains two previously unpublished miracles, known only from the work of Stavrakios, in Slavonic translation based on the Rila Panegyric of 1479 and translated into modern Bulgarian. Robin Myers, a prominent figure in the world of books and archives, passed away on her 97th birthday. She was a respected member of the Bibliographical Society and served as its first female president. This article brings attention to three manuscript letters by Robert Hooke and Isaac Newton in the Darmstaedter collection at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, two of which are published here for the first time. Of principal interest is a 1678 letter from Hooke to Newton, which concerns the controversy with Anthony Lucas over Newton's prism experiments and Hooke's disinclination 'to print transactions' on behalf of the Royal Society. A second Hooke letter, written to the French savant Nicolas Toinard in 1680, sends some astronomical observations together with English mathematician Robert Wood's book on a proposed calendrical reform. While the text of the third item, a 1706 letter by Newton welcoming its addressee into the Royal Society, has long been available in draft form, the Darmstaedter manuscript allows the recipient to be identified as a Savoyard diplomat, the Comte de Briançon, who can further be recognized as the intended addressee of another Newton letter. Educationally-oriented measures of handwriting fluency – tasks such as written alphabet recall and sentence copying – conflate graphomotor skill and various higher-level abilities. Direct measurement of pen control when forming letters requires analysis of pen-tip velocity associated with the production of sub-letter features that, in a skilled handwriter, are typically produced in a single, smooth movement. We provide a segmentation and coding scheme that identifies these features in manuscript letters and gives criteria for whether or not a feature is accurately formed. We demonstrate that, in skilled handwriters, these features are the product of smooth movements: The velocity profiles of adult writers (N = 27 performing a letter-copying task) producing straight-line features and curved features gave modal velocity-peak counts of 1 and 2 respectively. We then illustrate the utility of our segmentation and coding scheme by describing the velocity profiles of beginning writers (176 first grade students with minimal handwriting training). This sample produced the same features with less accuracy and with a substantially greater number of velocity peaks. Inaccurate features tended to be produced more slowly and less fluently. Autographs of famous people constitute an interesting, albeit small, branch of the art market. Due to the limited number of works on the subject, the consideration of factors that can affect the price formation of these goods is important. The article analyses the results obtained from the Polish market for the last 7 years. In the study, measures used in finding pairwise correlations were used to identify potential relationships between characteristics. The results indicated relationships between the asking (and final) price and such factors as: the popularity of the person signing the document, the time of the document's creation and the impact of the Covid19 pandemic. The paper also proposed a special popularity ranking of famous people based on the Google Trends tool. In addition to the above-mentioned main factors, a set of other features of the document was analysed to a limited extent, taking into account, among others: the state of preservation, format or content of the document.

The article by Thomas Wozniak discusses the research of writing on flat glass, especially in the 16th century using diamond-tipped tools. Examples of glass inscriptions in various contexts are mentioned, including autographs of well-known personalities such as Robert Burns and Johann Caspar Lavater. The use of glass as a writing surface required innovative steps such as the production of flat glass since antiquity and the development of engraving tools with diamonds. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a description of the phenomenology of authorial interventions attested by the autograph of Juan de la Cueva's Rimas sueltas, focusing mainly on the problems posed by some elements of the author's correction system about their legibility and/or interpretation, and finally to present our possible editorial solutions. This article reimagines the submission-accompanying covering letter by exploring the value of earlier outreach and correspondence between authors and editors. For authors planning submissions to journals in the humanities and humanities-adjacent social sciences, especially, this article explains the purpose and practice of initiating contact via query letter after manuscript conceptualization but before manuscript composition. In traditional publishing, a writer sends out query letters in order to seek representation. Though previous query letter research has examined this document's function when submitted to editors of magazines and journals, query letters submitted to agents for novels have only received attention from within the industry rather than as an object of academic inquiry. This study uses a corpus of query letters for fiction manuscripts to explore whether or not language proficiency and linguistic components bear weight on the success of querying authors. This article explores the challenges we faced when translating and editing the autograph letters of Anna Maria Van Schurman that span four decades from 1631 to 1669. Van Schurman was regarded as the most learned woman in Europe throughout the seventeenth and well into the eighteenth century. Most of the letters, primarily in Latin, are addressed to André Rivet (1572–1651) and Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687), towering figures in the Dutch Republic and the Republic of Letters. Our greatest challenge in translating and editing the letters was rhetorical: to discern and identify the gender dynamics at work when Van Schurman self-consciously entered the lettered world of male power and authority. Presenting the distinctive epistolary relations Van Schurman shared with Rivet and Huygens necessitated the identification of particularities in content, tone and material culture. Similarly, exploring these relations meant highlighting subtle and complex material markers in Van Schurman's letters, such as handwriting, visual presentation, and closing subscriptions and signatures, as well as postscripts, deferential spacing and quantity of paper used. We present Van Schurman's manuscript exchanges with Rivet and Huygens as a window into how a learned woman negotiated the challenges of epistolary networking in the Republic of Letters. Francesco Barberini, the cardinal nephew of Pope Urban VIII (1623–1644), is known to researchers primarily as a patron of the arts. However, he was a member of numerous dicasteries in the Roman Curia and held the office of head of the papal secretariat of state throughout the pontificate. In the early years he hardly appeared in this function. From 1631 onwards, testimonies of his involvement in the correspondence of the office become more frequent in the archives and provide information about his desire to play an active role in papal politics. Detailed autograph minutes to letters sent in cipher to the nuncios in Vienna deal with topics such as the mostly futile request of the imperials for subsidies, the rejection of criticism of the papal policy of neutrality and the improvement of relations between the Holy See and the imperial court. In addition, the attempt to influence the political convictions of members of religious orders working in Vienna and, in particular, the need to win the emperor's approval for the precedence of the prefect of Rome before the imperial envoy play a noticeable role. Este artículo se interroga por los usos sociales de la escritura en un museo provincial de bellas artes del litoral argentino a mediados de siglo XX, a partir de diferentes aportes de los estudios históricos sobre cultura escrita. El estudio interrelacionado de objetos bibliográficos, ephemera, escrituras expuestas, autógrafas y epigráficas permite identificar y constituir como objeto de análisis diferentes prácticas y artefactos escriturales. A partir del estudio de un caso particular, el artículo caracteriza diferentes tipologías de lo escrito para analizar su apropiación por parte de un grupo social. Esos usos son contextualizados a la luz de la emergencia de formas diferenciales de valoración de lo escrito en medios gráficos de comunicación y en la cultura institucional del museo a mediados de siglo XX. Las particularidades de un museo de arte permiten observar desde un enfoque singular la insistencia de imaginarios que vinculan a la inscripción escrituraria con la expresión de la individualidad y con la conservación de nombres ilustres en la memoria colectiva. Junto con ello, el estudio pone de relieve la noción de patrimonio escriturario, entendido como un dispositivo conceptual que permite dar cuenta de forma unitaria e integral de los objetos escritos conservados en un museo = This article examines the social uses of writing in a provincial museum of fine arts on the Argentinean area known as Litoral in the mid-twentieth century, based on different contributions from historical studies on written culture. The interrelated study of bibliographic objects, ephemera, exhibited writings, apparatus and auto-graphs allows us to identify and constitute different writing practices and artefacts as an object of analysis. From the study of a particular case, the article characterizes different typologies of writing and analyses their appropriation by a social group. These uses are contextualized in the light of the emergence of differential forms of valuing writing in the graphic media and in the institutional culture of the museum in the mid-twentieth century. The particularities of an art museum allow us to observe from a singular perspective the insistence of imaginaries that link written inscription with the expression of individuality and the preservation of illustrious names in the collective memory. The study also highlights the notion of written heritage, understood as a conceptual device that makes it possible to give a unitary and integral account of the written objects preserved in a museum.

The article discusses the practice of transferring rejected manuscripts to other journals within the same publisher's catalog. While this can save authors time and effort in reformatting, it raises concerns about the quality and ethics of the peer review process. In 1789, the Academy of Ancient Music replaced Benjamin Cooke with Samuel Arnold as its musical director. This article offers a detailed analysis of an autograph copy of the address Cooke delivered to the Academy responding to their action, and of a letter to Cooke from Arnold countering accusations made regarding his conduct in the affair. Both documents are annotated by Henry Cooke, who used them in writing a biography of his father. An autograph manuscript written after late October 1747 by Mark Catesby, now in the collections of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA, reveals that he was the author of a summary of the final (eleventh) part of his own book, The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama islands (1729–1747). The summary was read to the Royal Society by Cromwell Mortimer in February 1748 and was then published under Mortimer's name in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Mortimer only lightly edited Catesby's manuscript and added an encomium. In his summary, Catesby took the opportunity, several months after the publication of the final part ("Appendix") of his two-volume book, to enlarge on a few details. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I investigate archivally Michael Heinrich's arguments for the existence of a crucial theoretical shift in Marx's thought during the 1870s centered around his supposed doubts about the validity of the law of the falling rate of profit. Heinrich's arguments have been grouped into six clusters and discussed deploying the material contained in collections of published and unpublished writing of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, such as MECW and especially MEGA, whose second section includes all manuscripts related to Capital. This investigation concludes that the manuscripts and letters that Heinrich invokes to support his arguments do not substantiate any uncertainty on Marx's part about the validity of the law of the falling rate of profit nor a shift of his opinion during the 1870s towards the primacy of capitalist circulation, and especially credit, for explaining economic crisis. Only a decade ago Roger Kuin's The Correspondence of Sir Philip Sidney (2012) offered scholars for the first time a complete edition of Sidney's correspondence. Kuin modestly allowed room for new discoveries, in the hope that additional letters might be identified. This article introduces a previously unpublished autograph letter by Sidney, written in French, addressed on 21 April 1576 to Carolus Clusius or Charles de l'Écluse, an associate of Hubert Languet and a noted botanist then active in Vienna at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II. After briefly discussing the provenance of the manuscript I turn to its contents, situating the letter within the wider corpus of Sidney's extant correspondence, with reference to letters to and from Clusius and Languet in Kuin's edition, and analysing it within this context. The newly discovered letter, transcribed and translated in an appendix, is shown to offer important new evidence for Sidney's relationships with Clusius and Languet as well as his place in European intellectual culture more generally. We do not possess, nor are we ever likely to possess, any autograph of a Greek or Latin literary text from antiquity. We do not always apprise our students of this fact. This article seeks to explain why we possess only copies of the texts, often adapted for one reason or another and at many stages removed from the autographs. It also explains why certain kinds of originals cannot by their nature be copied or adapted, and are lost to us as soon as they are created. Non-literary texts too, written on durable materials other than papyri and parchment, do not, for various reasons, always constitute autographs, or autographs that we and our students can have ready access to. Despite the unanimous attribution of the manuscripts, the Corrispondenza bucolica of Giovanni del Virgilio and Dante is still the subject of debates which concern the authenticity of Dante's Eglogues.
