The Yanliao Biota is notable for producing rare and well-preserved Jurassic vertebrate fossils. Many discoveries in the Bawanggou section, northern Hebei Province have greatly enhanced our knowledge of important vertebrate fossils from the Yanliao Biota, including an arboreal euharamiyidan mammal, maniraptoran theropods, salamanders and pterosaurs. However, lacking of precise dating for the sediments bearing these fossils in the Bawanggou section hampered further understanding of the evolution of this biota. Here we report a chronology based on secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb zircon analyses from the Tiaojishan Formation bearing the Yanliao Biota in the Bawanggou section. Three bentonite layers dated to 159.0 ± 1.1 Ma, 159.5 ± 0.8 Ma, and 159.8 ± 0.8 Ma, respectively, were found to be interstratified with the fossil-bearing layer in this area. These data place the Yanliao Biota from Qinglong in the Oxfordian Stage of the Upper Jurassic and provide stringent constraints on vertebrates discovered in the Bawanggou section. Previous biostratigraphic studies and our geochronology show that fossil assemblage in the Bawanggou section is coeval with the Linglongta Biota (late Yanliao Biota) preserved in the Daxishan section (western Liaoning Province). Liaoning Province in China is an area known for the occurrence of numerous copper and/or molybdenum deposits of variable size. However, the age of mineralization and tectonic setting in this region are still a subject of debate. In this study we describe the geology of these deposits and apply zircon U–Pb and molybdenite Re–Os isotopic dating to constrain their ages and define the metallogenic epochs of this province. The Huatong Cu–Mo deposit yields molybdenite Re–Os model ages of 127.6–126.3 Ma and an isochron age of 127.4 ± 0.7 Ma. The Dongbeigou Mo deposit yields molybdenite Re–Os model ages of 132.6–127.1 Ma, an isochron age of 128.1 ± 5.1 Ma, and a zircon U–Pb age of 129.4 ± 0.3 Ma for the associated monzogranite. The granodiorite associated with the Wanbaoyuan Cu–Mo deposit yields a zircon U–Pb age of 128.4 ± 1.1 Ma; the plagiogranite associated with the Yaojiagou Mo deposit yields an age of 167.5 ± 0.9 Ma; and the biotite–plagioclase gneiss from the Shujigou Cu deposit yields an age of 2549.4 ± 5.6 Ma. These results, together with previous geochronology data, show that intense Cu–Mo porphyry and skarn mineralization were coeval with Early–Middle Jurassic and Early Cretaceous granitic magmatism. The former was associated with the orogeny that followed the collision of the Siberian and North China plates and the resulting closure of the palaeo-Asian Ocean, and the latter with rifting that followed the subduction of the palaeo-Pacific Plate and associated lithospheric thinning. Volcanogenic massive sulfide Cu deposit. mineralization took place much earlier, in the late Archaean, and was related to continent–continent collision, palaeo-ocean closure, the formation of a united continental landmass, bimodal volcanism, magma emplacement, and subsequent metamorphism and deformation of syn-collisional granites. The article reports that a Mesoarchean tonalitic gneiss was found in Northern Liaoning Province, China. According to the author, the tonalitic gneiss is considered to be an ancient lithotectonic element on the bases of zircons isotopic dating. The author suggests that other ancient rocks can be discovered with the outcrops and drill holes in the North China Craton.

[Display omitted] • The Dantazi Complex of the North Hebei Terrane in the northern North China Craton. • Late Neoarchean diversified granitoids were derived from crust-mantle interactions. • These crust-mantle dynamic processes developed in a continuous retreat arc setting. The Dantazi Complex in the North Hebei Terrane is located in the middle segment of the northern North China Craton, and plays a crucial role for understanding the early Precambrian crustal evolution of the craton. The Dantazi Complex is composed mainly of late Neoarchean tonalites-trondhjemites-granodiorites, potassic granites, sanukitoid granodiorites-monzodiorites and quartz syenites, which were emplaced by Paleoproterozoic gabbroic stocks. SHRIMP and LA–ICP–MS zircon dating analyses have revealed that the Neoarchean diversified granitoids of the Dantazi Complex were formed in ∼2.52–2.47 Ga, and preserved ∼2.60–2.53 Ga inherited/captured zircon ages. All these rocks experienced early metamorphism and deformation at ∼2.40 Ga, later granulite facies metamorphism at ∼1.80 Ga, and alterations at ∼1.73 Ga. Whole-rock chemical characteristics and Sm–Nd–Lu–Hf isotopes indicate that (1) The ∼2.52 Ga tonalites-trondhjemites-granodiorites were derived from partial melting of juvenile mafic crust; (2) the ∼2.51 Ga sanukitoid monzodiorite-granodiorite series came from slab-mantle interaction with different melt/rock ratios; (3) The ∼2.50–2.47 Ga potassic granites were generated by intracrustal recycling of metagreywacks that sourced from the mixture between juvenile and ancient crustal materials; and (4) The ∼2.50 Ga quartz syenites were originated from fractional crystallization of mantle-derived magmas. These petrogenetic processes reveal that the subduction-related crust-mantle interaction is the key reason for the diversity of late Neoarchean granitoids in the Dantazi Complex. Regional comparison indicates that the Precambrian North Hebei Terrane show distinct structure in the chronology and lithological assemblages from other basement terranes in the trans-North China Orogen and Western Block, implying that they were formed in different crust-mantle dynamic systems. Therefore, the Precambrian North Hebei Terrane was probably an independent micro-continental block at least until the early Paleoproterozoic. In the Archean crystalline basement range of the North Hebei–West Liaoning–East Hebei, from NW to SE, the magmatic crystallization ages gradually became older, and the granitoid assemblages transformed from sodium-rich to potassium-rich, the spatio-temporal evolution of chemical composition and lithological assemblages further indicates that the North Hebei Terrane was most likely developed in an arc environment with continuous retreat subduction caused by the slab roll-back. The Valanginian and Hauterivian stages of the Early Cretaceous are an important time interval for the co-evolution of key vertebrate taxa and flowering angiosperm, as well as for the diversification of dinosaurs and early birds on continents. Among these, the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota in northern China provides the most valuable fossil evidence. Lower Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Luanping Basin, northern China, is notable for its continuous sedimentary sequence and preservation of the early Jehol Biota, thus providing crucial evidence for probing into terrestrial ecosystem and paleoclimatic change. In this study, we present a chronology for the Lower Cretaceous Dabeigou and Dadianzi formations based on SIMS U–Pb zircon analyses and previous biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy from the Zhangjiagou section in the Luanping Basin, northern China. The lowest Dabeigou Formation yields age of 134.1 ± 1.0 Ma, and the upper Dadianzi Formation is constrained to 127.8 Ma, respectively. Previous geochronologic, biostratigraphic studies, and our new geochronology show that the Dabeigou and Dadianzi formations in the Luanping Basin are coeval with the Huajiying Formation in the Sichakou basins, representing the early Jehol Biota evolution, and thus are undoubtedly deposited earlier than the Yixian Formation in western Liaoning. Our findings, combining with the fossil evidence and geochemistry data show that the early evolution of the early stage of the Jehol Biota is constrained to ~132 Ma, characterized by a positive carbon isotope excursion (CIE) and increased biodiversity. The cooler temperature than the underlying sediments attribute to the primary productivity and thus helps the Jehol Biota to thrive. • We report a new chronology for the Lower Cretaceous in the Luanping Basin. • It's consistent with the early Jehol Biota preserves in the Senjitu-Sichakou basins. • Our findings show an age gap between the early–middle Jehol Biota. • Our data allow reconstructing chrono-stratigraphic columns around the Jehol area. • Testing the link between paleoclimatic change and the development of the Jehol Biota. The Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in western Liaoning Province, northeastern China contains important vertebrate fossils of the late Jehol Biota, e.g., the four-winged non-avian dinosaur Microraptor. This formation documents the late phase of the Jehol Biota, producing the most abundant fossil records of the Mesozoic birds. However, the precise age constraints on the fossiliferous layers of this formation remain scarce and chronological consensus of this formation has not been reached, limiting our understanding of the evolutionary history of the Jehol Biota and its time-spatial distribution. Here we present secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb zircon analysis results of four tuff samples interbedded within the Jehol fossil-bearing layers from the Jiufotang Formation outcrops at the Sanmendian and Xiaotaizi sections in the Jianchang Basin, western Liaoning. Stratigraphic correlation between two outcrop sections is achieved by combining lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic, and SIMS U-Pb zircon dating results. One tuff bed SMD17-1 closed to the boundary of the Yixian/Jiufotang formations from the Sanmendian section yielded an age of 122.0 ± 0.9 Ma, and three tuff beds XTZ17-1, XTZ17-2, and XTZ17-3 from the Xiaotaizi section dated to 118.9 ± 0.8 Ma, 118.8 ± 0.6 Ma, and 118.6 ± 1.1 Ma, respectively. These ages suggest that the Jiufotang Formation in Jianchang Basin was deposited at ca. 122.0–118.9 Ma, the latest Barremian–Aptian stage of the Lower Cretaceous and provides stringent constraints on the Mesozoic vertebrates discovered in the Jianchang Basin. Furthermore, the late Jehol Biota documents in the Jiufotang Formation has been placed between ~123 and ~119 Ma based on our new chronology and previous radiometric dates.
