As towering wooden edifices (≥8 stories) become a rapidly expanding and promising field, they provide substantial environmental and economic advantages throughout their entire lifespans, leading to their increasing popularity, especially in the European context. Similar to various other construction forms, spatial efficiency is a vital design criterion in timber buildings to guarantee the viability of a project. Currently, there is no thorough study on spatial efficiency in these towers in Europe, which is home to the majority of the world's timber towers. This paper examined data from 56 cases to improve comprehension of the planning factors affecting space efficiency in these buildings. The main findings showed that the average space efficiency across the analyzed examples was documented at 82%, with deviations spanning from 70% to 90%, the average core area to gross floor area (GFA) ratio was determined to be 11%, ranging from 4% to 21%, and no substantial difference was noted in the impact of core arrangements on space efficiency, and parallel findings were observed for forms and construction materials. This article aspires to provide architectural designers with essential perspectives, assisting and directing them in the conception and realization of upcoming ventures both across Europe and internationally in this domain. Objectives: The sweet chestnut Castanea sativa Mill. is the only native Castanea species in Europe, and it is a tree of high economic value that provides appreciated fruits and valuable wood. In this study, we assembled a high-quality nuclear genome of the ancient Italian chestnut variety 'Marrone di Chiusa Pesio' using a combination of Oxford Nanopore Technologies long reads, whole-genome and Omni-C Illumina short reads. Data description: The genome was assembled into 238 scaffolds with an N50 size of 21.8 Mb and an N80 size of 7.1 Mb for a total assembled sequence of 750 Mb. The BUSCO assessment revealed that 98.6% of the genome matched the embryophyte dataset, highlighting good completeness of the genetic space. After chromosome-level scaffolding, 12 chromosomes with a total length of 715.8 and 713.0 Mb were constructed for haplotype 1 and haplotype 2, respectively. The repetitive elements represented 37.3% and 37.4% of the total assembled genome in haplotype 1 and haplotype 2, respectively. A total of 57,653 and 58,146 genes were predicted in the two haplotypes, and approximately 73% of the genes were functionally annotated using the EggNOG-mapper. Forest biomass is an essential resource in relation to the green transition and its assessment is key for the sustainable management of forest resources. Here, we present a forest biomass dataset for Europe based on the best available inventory and satellite data, with a higher level of harmonisation and spatial resolution than other existing data. This database provides statistics and maps of the forest area, biomass stock and their share available for wood supply in the year 2020, and statistics on gross and net volume increment in 2010–2020, for 38 European countries. The statistics of most countries are available at a sub-national scale and are derived from National Forest Inventory data, harmonised using common reference definitions and estimation methodology, and updated to a common year using a modelling approach. For those counties without harmonised statistics, data were derived from the State of Europe's Forest 2020 Report at the national scale. Curly (Karelian) birch is a special variety of Betula pendula Roth distributed in the northwestern part of Europe. Karelian birch is well-known for its valuable figured curly wood also known as "wooden marble". The genetic basis underlying curly wood formation has been debated since last century, however, there was no data about loci responsible for the curly wood trait. In the present study, we analyzed two full-sibs populations derived from experimental crosses of curly birches and segregating for the trait. RADseq genotyping was applied to reveal how many loci are involved in 'curliness' formation and to search for genetic variants associated with this trait. One single interval on chromosome 10 was detected containing possible candidate genes. In transitioning to a carbon‐neutral chemical industry, the intake of fossil feedstocks will have to be reduced by maximizing end‐of‐life product recycling and introducing alternative feedstocks based on renewable carbon. This perspective article analyses the potential of domestically grown and sourced woody biomass for the supply of renewable carbon for chemicals in Europe. The relevant growth of the wood pellet market in Europe in the last decade led to an increased focus on solid biofuel as a necessary and available renewable resource for energy production. Among biofuels, wooden pellets are among the most widespread for domestic heating. Therefore, monitoring the qualitative properties of commercialized pellets is crucial in order to minimize the amount of harmful emissions in residential areas. Standard ISO 17225 sets threshold values for the chemical and physical properties that commercialized biofuels must fulfil. Specifically, ISO 17225-2 defines that pellets for residential use must be produced from virgin wood, but no method is proposed to assess the actual origin of the material, leading to the risk of the commercialization of pellets made up from chemically treated materials. This study proposes a model obtained via near infrared spectroscopy analyses and chemometrics methods, such as classification, to rapidly assess whether pellets are made up of virgin or chemically treated wood. The result suggests the effectiveness of NIRs for the detection of non-virgin pellets with an accuracy greater than 99%. Furthermore, the model appeared to be accurate in the assessment of both milled and intact pellets, making it a potential in-line instrument for assessments of pellets' quality. Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OAs) and black carbon (BC), posing a significant risk to air quality and health. Simultaneously, as a substantial aerosol source, RWB also holds relevance in the context of aerosol radiative effects and climate. While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OAs in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Existing studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe primarily concentrate on urban and background sites and focus on BC properties. Despite the significant RWB emissions in rural areas, these locations have received comparatively less attention. The present scenario underscores the imperative for an improved understanding of RWB pollution, aerosol optical properties, and their subsequent connection to climate impacts, particularly in rural areas. We have characterized atmospheric aerosol particles from a central European rural site during wintertime in the village of Retje in Loški Potok, Slovenia, from 1 December 2017 to 7 March 2018. The village experienced extremely high aerosol concentrations produced by RWB and near-ground temperature inversion. The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 35 µgm-3 (max⁡=270 µgm-3) and 3.1 µgm-3 (max⁡=24 µgm-3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9×103 particles cm -3 (max⁡=59×103 particles cm -3). The mean total light absorption coefficients at 370 and 880 nm measured by an AE33 Aethalometer were 120 and 22 Mm -1 and had maximum values of 1100 and 180 Mm -1 , respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and a larger extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near-UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to 3 times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MAC OA,370nm=2.4 m 2 g -1 , and AAE BrC,370-590nm=3.9 , respectively. Simple-forcing-efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. The SFE results show a considerable forcing capacity from the local RWB aerosols, with a high sensitivity to OA absorption properties and a more substantial impact over bright surfaces like snow, typical during the coldest season with higher OA emissions from RWB. Our study's results are highly significant regarding air pollution, optical properties, and climate impact. In Central Europe, the most important pioneer species are silver birch and European aspen. Changes in disturbance regime and an economic interest for this species have led to studies on this species and stands. Two naturally regenerated dense stands of birch (Betula pendula Roth - silver birch monoculture) and aspen (Populus tremula L. - European aspen monoculture)were selected from a Querceto - Fagetum mesotrophicum site to observe responses under the same conditions in Central Europe. Both stands regenerated after the allochthonous Norway spruce stands dieback at the site in 1999. Within a 10m × 25m transect established in both stands, the diameter at breast height (DBH) of all the trees was measured between 2015 and 2020. In addition, the height and position were recorded for all trees, and sample trees of both species were felled for biomass measurement. A higher volume production of aspen at the beginning (107.48/96.80 m³ ) and at the end of the experiment (178.32/143.08 m³ ) was accompanied with a lower above-ground wood biomass (WAB). The WAB of birch increased from 81.9 t·ha-1 to 103.3 t·ha-1 and aspen allocated 79.5 t·ha-1 to 94.8 t·ha-1 of biomass. The current annual increment of biomass for these stands was 4.3 t·ha-1 and 3.1 t·ha-1 in the age range of 17 to 22 years. The culmination of the volume increment has not yet occurred in any of the stands, but the mean annual increment of wood biomass has already been reached for both stands. Furthermore, the aspen stand tended to be more dynamic in terms of biomass allocation and mortality. In the present work, single- and double-dowel joints following different geometric configurations are experimentally and numerically investigated to derive the splitting behaviour of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.), one of the most widespread hardwood species in Europe for structural purposes. The influence of the spacing between dowels, their distance to the supports, and the slenderness of the beams is analysed. The correlation of the experimental failure loads with those predicted numerically by cohesive zone finite element-based models using the fracture properties of the species is discussed. The experimental results are also compared with those obtained from the normative expression included in Eurocode 5 and two other design models reported in the literature. The splitting failure loads predicted by both the analytical and numerical models were found to be conservative, the latter being closer to the experimental values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparative assessment of bud and wood phenology could aid a better understanding of tree growth dynamics. However, the reason for asynchronism or synchronism in leaf and cambial phenology remains unclear. To test the assumption that the temporal relationship between the budburst date and the onset date of wood formation is due to their common or different responses to environmental factors, we constructed a wood phenology dataset from previous literature, and compared it with an existing bud phenology dataset in Europe. We selected three common conifers (Larix decidua Mill. Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L.) in both datasets and analyzed 909 records of the onset of wood formation at 47 sites and 238,720 records of budburst date at 3051 sites. We quantified chilling accumulation (CA) and forcing requirement (FR) of budburst and onset of wood formation based on common measures of CA and FR. We then constructed negative exponential CA–FR curves for bud and wood phenology separately. The results showed that the median, variance and probability distribution of CA–FR curves varied significantly between bud and wood phenology for three conifers. The different FR under the same chilling condition caused asynchronous bud and wood phenology. Furthermore, the CA–FR curves manifested that wood phenology was more sensitive to chilling than bud phenology. Thus, the FR of the onset of wood formation increases more than that of budburst under the same warming scenarios, explaining the stronger earlier trends in the budburst date than the onset date of woody formation simulated by the process-based model. Our work not only provides a possible explanation for asynchronous bud and wood phenology from the perspective of organ-specific responses to chilling and forcing, but also develops a phenological model for predicting both bud and wood phenology with acceptable uncertainties. Wood is a traditional roofing material in Europe and other parts of the world. In the seventeenth century, wooden roofing was generally used on more important buildings, but today it is mainly used on huts and houses in the Alpine regions. As wooden roofing is expensive, we investigated the possibility of extending the service life of the roofing through material selection and details. The roof of the Golobar cable yarding was covered with shingles made of spruce (Picea abies) and larch (Larix decidua). Part of the spruce roofing was thermally modified and/or treated with a water-wax emulsion. On the underside, we cut grooves in selected roof shingles to increase the specific surface of the wood and to accelerate drying after rainfall. In addition, wood moisture monitoring sensors were installed on the roof shingles. Based on three years of the wood moisture content measurements, it can be concluded that among shingles made of untreated spruce wood, the highest moisture content was recorded for shingles with a rectangular cross-section without additional grooves. The additional grooves positively affected the moisture performance of wood. Treating the wood with Silvacera wax had an even more pronounced effect on the moisture content of the shingles than the grooves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Molecular cues linked to heartwood formation open new (complementary) perspectives to genetic breeding programs of Douglas-fir, a tree species largely cultivated in Europe for the natural durability and civil engineering properties of its wood. Data description: RNAs from a single genotype of Douglas-fir, extracted from three distinct wood zones (outer sapwood, inner sapwood and transition zone) at four vegetative seasons to generate an extensive RNA-seq dataset used to apprehend the in-wood dynamic and seasonality of heartwood formation in this hardwood model species. The maximum latewood density (MXD) of tree rings can reflect the temperature of the growing season, but the timing of the response differs among regions. We selected 152 maximum latewood density chronologies from the Northern Hemisphere that showed a significant response to temperature. Based on a cluster analysis and the sensitivity of MXD to the monthly mean temperature, the chronologies were classified into six clusters. The clusters showed distinct regional characteristics, and the period and peak month of significant response of the chronologies in each cluster to temperature were different. Spatial synchronization of the MXDs revealed that the two clusters distributed in Europe showed the most consistency and the strongest response to the April–September monthly mean temperature compared with the other clusters. Temperature accounted for more than 40% of the total MXD variance in all clusters, whereas the effect of precipitation was much smaller. In addition to climatic factors, the random effect of the latitude and longitude of sampling sites, elevation, and tree species was a major factor contributing to the variance in MXD in each cluster. Latitude and longitude had the strongest influence among the three random effects, and tree species had the weakest influence, except at high latitudes. The MXD of each cluster showed sensitivity to temperature within a certain interval, with a positive linear response, and the sensitivity interval was greatest at high latitudes. Certain clusters showed a negative linear sensitivity to precipitation. The results provide a reference for studying the climatic threshold of large-scale tree-ring density formation. Bending-active design is an approach based on bending and then fixing initially planar beams or shell parts within elastic displacement limits; grid shell, which stand out with their light, flexible and organic properties, are produced with this approach. In the production under consideration, material losses also occur in bending due to some missing criteria and limited experimental studies on the bending of the structural member. In this study, it is focused on the applicability of wooden grid shell in Turkiye. First, the sizing and detailing knowledge of worldwide applications were determined, and then the characteristics of the native wood types were investigated. In this scope, the tree species and proper wood types in Turkiye for this process were studied through detailed data analysis. From the current literature, the physical and mechanical characteristics of native wood species in Turkiye were tabulated. The radii of curvature not available in the national literature were calculated and the relationships of the parameters among the density, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, cost, production quantity parameters were investigated. This research is the first study in the literature on the applicability of grid shell structures in Turkiye to classify tree species and to determine and evaluate suitable wood types with analytical methods. From the evaluations, beech, larch and oak, which are common in our country and have higher flexural strength compared to their examples in Europe; it was concluded that the most proper tree species in terms of supply, strength, and bendability for grid shell production. The demand for wood in Europe is expected to increase in the coming decades. However, any theoretical maximum supply will be affected by sustainability constraints, the motivations of forest owners and regional factors, such as incentives, species and assortments. However, the influence of these factors on supply is changeable. In this study, we quantify what might be realistically available as additional wood supply from currently existing European forests, based on a combination of results of the forest resource model EFISCEN-Space and a literature review of national supply projections. Wood mobilization scenarios for 10 representative Model Regions in Europe that assume forest owners and managers in the simulated regions will adapt their behaviour to alternative behaviour as recorded from other regions were projected with the EFISCEN-Space model. The realistic additional potential based on the literature review is 90 million m3 yr−1. This potential should be attainable within 10–20 years. However, the simulations in the Model Regions found potentials to be lower in 7 out of 10 cases as compared with the country they are located in. On average, the model regions reached less than half of the potential as compared with the literature review. This suggests that the realistic additional potential at the European scale may well be lower if all mobilization barriers are taken into account in more detail, but also highlights the uncertainty surrounding these estimates. We conclude from the analyses that although there are large differences in potential between regions and the analysis method employed, there are no 'hotspots' where a large pool of accessible wood can be quickly mobilized using existing infrastructure for nearby industries. An increase in harvest would therefore only be possible with a large effort that spans the whole chain, from forest owners' behaviour to capacity building, financial incentives and matching resources to harvesting capacity. The additionally available wood can most likely only be mobilized against higher marginal costs and will thus only become available in times of higher stumpage prices. The largest potential lies in privately owned forests which often have a fragmented ownership but will most likely be able to supply more wood, though mostly from deciduous species. In the long term (more than 20 years), additional wood, compared with the amounts we found for short term, can only be made available through investments in afforestation, forest restoration, improved forest management and more efficient use of raw material and recycled material. Beech is an important tree species in Europe. This study aimed to elucidate the influence of four molecular weights of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin (266, 286, 387, and 410 g/mol) on the sorption behavior of unmodified and modified beech wood samples using a dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) apparatus. The variations in the environmental relative humidity and moisture content (MC) of the samples were recorded, and the DVS isotherms were plotted from the equipment. During the sorption process, the MC of the modified samples decreased in comparison to that of the unmodified samples, and both apparently decreased with the increasing molecular weight of the PF resin. The DVS isotherm hysteresis plot illustrated a reduction in sorption hysteresis for the modified wood with varying PF resins compared to the unmodified samples. Based on the DVS isotherm adsorption and desorption plots, the decrease in the equilibrium of the MC can be attributed to there being fewer sorption sites in the modified samples, which exhibited the lowest hygroscopicity. Overall, the moisture sorption mechanism for both types of samples was clarified, highlighting a clear correlation between the molecular weight of the applied PF resin and its influence on moisture sorption behavior. The technical assessment of wooden elements is the primary step in their repair and reinforcement design. Normative requirements currently mandate additional tests, including semi-destructive ones, beyond traditional visual assessment. Despite the growing feasibility of semi-destructive tests for qualitative assessments, there remains a paucity of data enabling quantitative assessments. This study investigated the hardness of structural timber, specifically pine, spruce, and fir, from Central Europe using sclerometric methods. The outcomes of these tests were compared with those of conventional destructive tests and correlational relationships were established. A strong correlation was found between the sclerometric tests and density (r = 0.62 ÷ 0.82), while a range of strong to moderate correlations was found (r = 0.40 ÷ 0.70) for mechanical characteristics (bending and compressive strength). The correlation strength varied among different wood species, with the strongest for pine and the weakest for spruce. All established relationships were compiled into 40 functions to facilitate their future utilization in quantitative assessments during the technical evaluation of wooden objects. The study also examined the influence of wood defects on the derived correlations by considering the knot index. Sclerometric methods accurately reflect the physico-mechanical properties of elements with a small or medium defect content. However, for wood with a high proportion of defects (knots), the correlations are very weak (r = 0.23 ÷ 0.52, including statistically insignificant results). This research offers new insights into the potential of semi-destructive methods in the structural evaluation of wooden elements, highlighting the need to account for wood species and defect content. Microremains of fungi from Neogene deposits from the Gray Fossil Site (Tennessee, United States) and the Bełchatów Lignite Mine (Poland), similar to the enigmatic fossil-species Kutchiathyrites eccentricus R.K. Kar, 1979, were reconsidered as representatives of the modern mitosporic genus Mycoenterolobium Goos, 1970. A new combination, Mycoenterolobium eccentricum (R.K. Kar) G. Worobiec, n. comb., is proposed. The geographical and stratigraphical range and ecology of the fossil and modern Mycoenterolobium species are discussed. Investigated remains of Mycoenterolobium eccentricum (R.K. Kar) G. Worobiec, n. comb. document the first fossil record of this fungus from both Northern America and Europe, while the Bełchatów mine represents the northernmost known fossil and modern occurrence of the Mycoenterolobium genus. Both modern and fossil species of Mycoenterolobium seem to prefer warm (tropical to warm temperate), usually humid climates. They are associated with plant debris (mainly wood) decaying in a damp or aquatic environment. Mycoenterolobium eccentricum (R.K. Kar) G. Worobiec, n. comb. is suggested to be used as a non-pollen palynomorph proxy for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 34.8 µg m-3 (max = 271.8 µg m-3) and 3.1 µg m-3 (max = 24.3 µg m-3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9 x 103 particles cm-3 (max = 53.5 x 103 particles cm-3). The mean total light absorption coefficient at 370 nm and 880 nm measured by an Aethalometer AE33 were 122.8 Mm-1 and 15.3 Mm-1 and had maximum values of 1103.9 Mm-1 and 179.1 Mm-1, respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than those reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to three times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MACOA, 370 nm= 2.4 m2 g-1, and AAEBrC, 370–590 nm= 3.9, respectively. Simple forcing efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. Abies alba Mill. (Pinaceae), silver fir, is a widespread gymnosperm species in Europe, important for its ecological, economic, social, and cultural significance, as well as for its use for food and bioremediation purposes. The various parts of the plant (leaves, branches, cones, wood, bark) are also of pharmaceutical interest due to their composition of active compounds. In the last three decades, an impressive amount of research has been dedicated to this species. The variability of the chemical composition of essential oils (whether they come from leaves, oleoresin from branches, or other parts of the plant) is impressive, even in the case of specimens collected from the same geographical area. For essential oils prepared from needles or twigs and branches, limonene, β-pinene, α-pinene, camphene, β-phellandrene, and bornyl acetate are the leading compounds, although their wide variations seem to correspond to multiple chemotypes. Both bark and wood are rich in lignans and phenolic compounds. Matairesinol is apparently the dominant lignan in bark, and secoisolariciresinol and lariciresinol are the dominant ones in wood samples. Pharmacological studies with promising results have evaluated the antioxidant effect (mainly due to essential oils), but also the antimicrobial, antitumor, probiotic, antidiabetic, anti-steatosis, and anti-psoriatic activities. This paper presents the results of tests of a new mono-component polyurethane coating for wood with the aim of evaluating its effect on Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum), which is a wood species used in Europe for various applications, especially outdoors, after being heat treated. The coating was tested on both untreated and thermally treated samples, as the latter procedure is commonly used in the wood industry to modify the material's characteristics. Moreover, two kinds of coating application were tested: coatings applied via brushing and coatings applied via spraying; in this test, we also verified the most suitable and effective modality. Samples were investigated using the following techniques: colour measurement, roughness mapping, contact angle measurement, surface micro-hardness and the wearing test; these techniques were applied before and after a period of artificial ageing under simulated solar irradiation. Upon synthesizing the main results, we identified the following results: (i) the polyurethane coating reduced the colour variation as a result of artificial aging of the untreated Ayous wood; in contrast, heat-treated wood underwent large colour changes; (ii) the coating acted effectively as a hydrophobic agent on the surface of the wood in each case examined, though even a short aging time altered the initial wettability characteristics; and (iii) the application of the coating caused a decrease in the roughness of both untreated and heat-treated surfaces, though this trend was much more evident in the case of the spray modality of application; however, aging always induced an increase in roughness, which was mainly observed in uncoated wood samples. This study was conducted in Central Europe (Poland) in pine forests that were subjected to the process of resin harvesting in the 1970s. Forty trees were designated for the study, which had one or two resin blazes. The objectives of the experiment were to determine the effect of resin tapping on the changes in annual growth, wood density, and mechanical strength of wood in the damaged trees. Resin tapping affected the development dynamics, especially in trees with a single resin blaze. In addition, bark cutting affected wood density over the cross-section. However, no significant variation was found in terms of the mechanical properties of wood, which may support the theory of adaptive tree growth and optimization of tree’s structure to its functions. The species‐energy hypothesis predicts increasing biodiversity with increasing energy in ecosystems. Proxies for energy availability are often grouped into ambient energy (i.e., solar radiation) and substrate energy (i.e., non‐structural carbohydrates or nutritional content). The relative importance of substrate energy is thought to decrease with increasing trophic level from primary consumers to predators, with reciprocal effects of ambient energy. Yet, empirical tests are lacking. We compiled data on 332,557 deadwood‐inhabiting beetles of 901 species reared from wood of 49 tree species across Europe. Using host‐phylogeny‐controlled models, we show that the relative importance of substrate energy versus ambient energy decreases with increasing trophic levels: the diversity of zoophagous and mycetophagous beetles was determined by ambient energy, while non‐structural carbohydrate content in woody tissues determined that of xylophagous beetles. Our study thus overall supports the species‐energy hypothesis and specifies that the relative importance of ambient temperature increases with increasing trophic level with opposite effects for substrate energy. The durability against decay organisms is an essential material property for wood in outdoor use. A jack of all trades method for above-ground wood durability testing has been sought for decades, but until now no method has found its way into European standardization. The method of choice shall be applicable for untreated and treated wood—ideally also for wood composites. It shall further be reproducible, objective, fast, easy, and inexpensive. Finally, it shall provide high predictive power. This study was aimed at a review of results and practical experience with the Bundle test method which could serve as a standard procedure for above-ground field tests of wood-based materials. The method allows for water-trapping, creates a moderate moisture-induced decay risk typical for UC 3 situations, and was found applicable for a wide range of wood materials. The method allows for rapid infestation and failure of non-durable reference species within five years in Central Europe. Based on results from Bundle tests with different modifications and performed at different locations, a guideline has been developed. The method is recommended as a suitable tool for determining the durability of various wood-based materials including modified and preservative-treated wood and can provide data for durability classification. European beech is one of the dominating wood species in central Europe and the most abundant hardwood species in Austrian, German and Swiss forests. Today, it is predominantly used for the provision of energy and in the furniture industry. With the increasing demand on forests to provide sustainable raw materials for energy as well as products, the importance of lesser-used wood species like European beech has continuously increased over the last decade. The application in load-bearing products has gained significant interest. In order to connect the current and historical state of knowledge about this wood species, this review provides an overview of the past and present utilization of European beech wood. On the basis of the historical literature, technical approvals and standards of established products, it aims to summarize the extensive state of the art of this wood species and provide an overview of recent scientific publications in the field of wood material science. Based on the reviewed literature, current research efforts deal with different engineered wood products like glued laminated timber, cross-laminated timber and laminated veneer lumber. Numerous non-native tree species are given attention with respect to the reforestation of calamity areas in Europe. Among them, several species may form durable wood which can be used for outdoor applications, but differences in wood durability are expected between original and European growth sites. This study aimed at examining the biological durability against wood-destroying fungi and water permeability of German-grown Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) and Port Orford cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana). The heartwood of both wood species was assigned to durability class 4 (DC 4, less durable) in soil contact and DC 1–4 (very to less durable) against wood-destroying basidiomycetes. However, according to the Meyer-Veltrup model, their material resistance dose was notably higher compared to the reference species Norway spruce (Picea abies), and the resulting service life of above ground structures should be a multiple of the reference. Heterobasidion annosum is one of the most aggressive pathogens of Pinus forests in Europe, causing considerable economic losses. To detect H. annosum for disease diagnosis and control, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reaction with a primer set designed from the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) DNA sequences of H. annosum. In our study, this LAMP assay was found to be capable of efficiently amplifying the target gene within 60 min at 63°C. In specificity tests, H. annosum was positively detected, and other species were negative. The detection limit of this assay was found to be 100 pg·mL-1, and the assay was also successfully tested for use with basidiospore suspensions and wood samples. This study provides a rapid method for diagnosing root and butt rot caused by H. annosum, which will be of use in port surveillance of logs imported from Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chestnut tree (Castanea sativa, Mill.) is a widespread plant in Europe whose fruits and wood has a relevant economic impact. Chestnut wood (CW) is rich in high-value compounds that exhibit various biological activities, such as antioxidant as well as anticarcinogenic and antimicrobial properties. These metabolites can be mainly divided into monomeric polyphenols and tannins. In this piece of work, we investigated a sustainable protocol to isolate enriched fractions of the above-mentioned compounds from CW residues. Specifically, a sequential extraction protocol, using subcritical water, was used as a pre-fractionation step, recovering approximately 88% of tannins and 40% of monomeric polyphenols in the first and second steps, respectively. The optimized protocol was also tested at pre-industrial levels, treating up to 13.5 kg CW and 160 L of solution with encouraging results. Ultra- and nanofiltrations were used to further enrich the recovered fractions, achieving more than 98% of the tannin content in the heavy fraction, whilst the removed permeate achieved up to 752.71 mg GAE/gext after the concentration (75.3%). Samples were characterized by means of total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (DPPH· and ABTS·), and tannin composition (hydrolysable and condensed). In addition, LC-MS-DAD was used for semiqualitative purposes to detect vescalagin/castalagin and vescalin/castalin, as well as gallic acid and ellagic acid. The developed valorization protocol allows the efficient fractionation and recovery of the major polyphenolic components of CW with a sustainable approach that also evaluates pre-industrial scaling-up. Background: The huge quantity of agricultural biomass has led Europe to issue directives to ensure that it is properly managed. Among the permanent European crops area, olive, orange, and apricot orchards are the most present. The management of these crops produces significant amounts of biomass, which very often is burned in the field. With a view to the circular economy, this study aims to analyze the secondary metabolites present in the biomass of these three crops. Results: Secondary metabolites were extracted from wood and bark by an Accelerated Solvent Extractor at 120° using water, ethanol, and a mixture of water and ethanol as solvents. In addition, the identification of the molecules present in the extracts was attempted using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS). The analysis showed that in the three crops, the highest yields of extract were measured in the bark while the species that has shown the highest yield compared to the others was the olive tree. HPLC–MS technique revealed interesting molecular compounds, such as catechins, epicatechins, and oleuropein, respectively in the apricot and olive extracts. Conclusion: The biomass extractives of these three species highlighted an interesting potential for applications in various industrial sectors such as for example, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and agriculture. The ongoing shifts in natural vegetation zones predict the expansion of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) into the Eastern Baltic region, suggesting it will become a potential alternative to birch (Betula pendula Roth. and Betula pubescens Ehrh.) in forest regeneration. For a successful application of alternative forest regeneration material, an evaluation of susceptibility to natural disturbances (e.g., wind) is necessary for reliable projections of timber yield in the long term. This study compared the loading resistance of beech growing in the northeasternmost stands in Europe to local birch by applying the static tree-pulling test. Relationships between dimensions of aboveground parts and resistance against intrinsic wood damages (primary failure) and fatal (secondary) failure were similar between species. However, birch, which is more drought sensitive compared to beech, is suggested to have a higher susceptibility to post-storm legacy effects, supporting beech as a potential alternative to birch in terms of wind resistance. In recent years, the use of wood has gained social interest, leading to a global increase in its demand. Yet, this demand is often covered by the production of woods of low natural durability against biological deterioration. The main biological agents with the potential to attack the structural integrity of wood are wood-decay fungi, saproxylic beetles, termites, and marine molluscs and crustaceans. In most circumstances, fungi are the main wood-deteriorating agents. To attack the cell wall, wood-decay fungi combine a complex enzymatic mechanism with non-enzymatic mechanisms based on low-molecular-weight compounds. In some cases, the larvae of saproxylic beetles can also digest cell wood components, causing serious deterioration to wooden structures. The impact of subterranean termites in Europe is concentrated in the Southern countries, causing important economic losses. However, alien invasive species of voracious subterranean termites are expanding their presence in Europe. Wooden elements in permanent contact with marine water can be readily deteriorated by mollusc and crustacean borers, for which current preservatives lack efficacy. The natural durability of wood is defined as the inherent resistance of wood to catastrophic action by wood-destroying organisms. Besides exposure to the climate, product design and use conditions, the natural durability of wood is key to the prediction of the service life of wooden products, which can be shortened due to the impact of global change. The major wood properties involved in natural durability are related to the composition of lignin in the cell wall, the anatomy of the xylem, nutrient availability, the amount and composition of heartwood extractives, and the presence of moisture-regulating components since wood moisture content influences the establishment of wood-degrading organisms. Some properties of wood, such as maximum moisture content, cell-wall density and porosity, are not well known, even though they affect the performance of chemical preservatives, glues and coatings on wood. This knowledge gap was addressed in the present study by analysing these physical properties in laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) wood. Laurel is a common hardwood tree in southern Europe. Seventeen laurel trees were felled for the study, and 300 defect-free specimens were obtained from the trees for analysis. The following mean values were obtained: wood maximum moisture content, 114%; cell-wall oven-dry density, 1198 kg m−3; and oven-dry wood porosity, 45%. Significant inter- and intra-tree variations in the three properties were observed. The inter-tree variation was mainly attributed to the tree age, and the trend suggests that wood maximum moisture content and porosity are expected to be lower in older trees than those under study. The values of the three properties were slightly, but statistically significantly, lower at the highest positions in the tree. Harvesting of the basal logs of young trees is therefore advisable only if more porous wood is required, and commercial exploitation of the whole trunk of mature trees is recommended if more compact wood is required. The variation in cell-wall density was not negligible, although this variable is often assumed to be approximately constant for all wood species. Due to the rapid decline in coniferous (softwood) stands in Europe, the wood-based panel industry will be forced to adapt its products to the wood market supply. The production of wood fibre insulation boards (WFIB), which are usually made with softwood fibres, must therefore be converted to the use of hardwood fibres. The objective of this study was to investigate the properties of WFIB made from hardwood fibres and blends of softwood and hardwood fibres produced in a refiner by thermo-mechanical pulping (TMP). WFIB with a raw density of 100 kg m−3 were produced in a dry process with hot-air and hot-steam. The binder used was polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI, 5 wt% related to the weight of dry fibre material) for stiff boards or 7 wt% bi-component (Bico) fibres for flexible mats. Mechanical strength results for pure hardwood fibres were significantly lower than for softwood fibres and for fibre blends, while water absorption was significantly higher. However, the thermal conductivity for pure hardwood fibres was higher than for softwood fibres and for fibre blends. The results showed that it is possible to produce WFIB from hardwood fibres with satisfactory properties. WFIB made from hardwood fibre blends with at least 20% softwood fibre content showed comparable results to those made from pure softwood fibres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experiment was conducted in the pine woods of central Europe at a research area established in 1951. The experimental area of 1.35 ha was set up in a 14-year-old pine tree stand, which was divided into lots, and the pruning procedure took place in different variants. Some lots constituted control lots without pruned trees. The trees were pruned in four variants, reducing the living tree crown by 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of its length. The study's main aim was to determine the influence of pruning forest trees on the tree tissue. Moreover, the study attempted to answer whether pruning was a significant procedure for wood valorisation, and if yes, then which variant was the optimal one for Scots pine growing on the European plain. The results indicated a significant impact of pruning young pine tree stands on the properties of wood tissue, which differed regarding the adopted pruning variant. Significant differences in the width of annual rings, the size of the particular areas of the annual rings (latewood or earlywood), and the wood density depending on the pruning variant were observed. Furthermore, the results indicated that pruning induced numerous processes, which optimised the physiological and mechanical functions of the tree trunks. The outcome of this optimisation was, among others, the diversification of the vascular and strengthening area of the annual ring as well as the wood density, which was a reaction to reducing a part of the assimilation apparatus. The traditional demolition process for brickwork buildings results in a significant volume of mixed debris. The debris consists of ceramic bricks (and other wall elements), mortar, thermal insulation (usually expanded polystyrene or rockwool), smaller steel elements, pieces of wood, and glass. Such mixed debris is difficult to recycle. Separating thermal insulation that is "glued" by cement mortar to brickwork is probably the most difficult and time-consuming task in processing mixed debris. This task can be performed in a very different and fully "automatized" manner using Tenebrio molitor mealworms. The mealworms remove expanded polystyrene from brickwork surfaces and transform it into frass. In the paper, a research program aiming to prove the concept of using the mealworms of Tenebrio molitor for processing mixed debris is presented. The tests were conducted using two models of a three-layered brickwork wall, which is very common in Europe. The proposed approached was successful. Both types of used expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) were fully removed from multilayer wall specimens. The possibilities and limitations of the proposed processing method were discussed and analyzed. The conducted research proved that it is feasible to clean brickwork debris from the EPS using Tenebrio molitor mealworms. Differences in the speed of cleaning process regarding the type of EPS were noted. More research is needed to scale the process, and to find the best method for using frass. Ceratocystis platani (CP), an ascomycetous fungus, is the agent of canker stain, a lethal vascular disease of Platanus species. Ceratocystis platani has been listed as a quarantine pest (EPPO A2 list) due to extensive damage caused in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. As traditional diagnostic assays are ineffective, a Real-Time PCR detection method based on EvaGreen, SYBR Green, and Taqman assays was previously developed, validated in-house, and included in the official EPPO standard PM7/14 (2). Here, we describe the results of a test performance study performed by nine European laboratories for the purpose of an interlaboratory validation. Verification of the DNA extracted from biological samples guaranteed the high quality of preparations, and the stability and the homogeneity of the aliquots intended for the laboratories. All of the laboratories reproduced nearly identical standard curves with efficiencies close to 100%. Testing of blind-coded DNA extracted from wood samples revealed that all performance parameters—diagnostic sensitivity, diagnostic specificity, accuracy and reproducibility—were best fit in most cases both at the laboratory and at the assay level. The previously established limit of detection, 3 fg per PCR reaction, was also validated with similar excellent results. The high interlaboratory performance of this Real-Time PCR method confirms its value as a primary tool to safeguard C. platani-free countries by way of an accurate monitoring, and to investigate the resistance level of potentially canker stain-resistant Platanus genotypes. The study underscores the susceptibility of the wych elm Ulmus glabra to infection by Botryodiplodia hypodermia, the causal agent of elm canker. Mycelia of the fungus were implanted on saplings in two variants (scoring the bark surface and drilling holes in the wood) and compared with a control group. Botryodiplodia hypodermia was not found to have a statistically significant ability to cause dieback of elm saplings in short term. However, both infected groups (by scoring and drilling) reacted strongly to Botryodiplodia hypodermia implantation: this prevented the formation of callus tissue and thus the healing of the wound caused by the mycelium inoculation. Greyish-blue or dark tissue discolourations were noted above and below the infection site, although the fungus could not be isolated from these areas. The ability to block the formation of callus tissue wherever the bark has been damaged, leading to the appearance of tree canker (unhealed wounds), can favour secondary infections of shoots by other pathogenic fungi. Dead wood represents an important pool of carbon and nitrogen in forest ecosystems. This source of soil organic matter has diverse ecosystem functions that include, among others, carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, information is limited on how deadwood properties such as chemical composition, decomposer abundance, community composition, and age correlate and affect decomposition rate. Here, we targeted coarse dead wood of beech, spruce, and fir, namely snags and tree trunks (logs) in an old-growth temperate forest in central Europe; measured their decomposition rate as CO2 production in situ; and analyzed their relationships with other measured variables. Respiration rate of dead wood showed strong positive correlation with acid phosphatase activity and negative correlation with lignin content. Fungal biomass (ergosterol content) and moisture content were additional predictors. Our results indicate that dead wood traits, including tree species, age, and position (downed/standing), affected dead wood chemical properties, microbial biomass, moisture condition, and enzyme activity through changes in fungal communities and ultimately influenced the decomposition rate of dead wood. In the past, cattle blood was used for painting in central Europe mainly for interior wooden elements. Unfortunately, this common wood-coating technique of the past had vanished during the 20th century and only many misinformed opinions are left about this coating's purpose and its effects on wood durability. Three different recipes were used for beech and pine sapwood treatment, which were tested for their durability against wood-rotting fungi and termites. The fire retardancy of blood-based paints and its color change during the hardening process was determined as well. Over the course of time the bright brick red color of the coating turns a dark brown color. The coating surface layer did not protect the wood against either white- or brown-rot fungus; it is rather a source of nutrients necessary for a fungi degradation activity. The specimen treatment with the blood-based paint did not avoid termites feeding on wood, however the overall mortality was reached at the end of the test. The higher pH of the treated wood and/or available amount of micronutrients could be plausible explanations. Although fire retardancy of the coating was not proved, flame-exposed spruce wood with the coating did not show significantly improved fire resistance compared to untreated wood. In Central Europe, European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) wood has a high potential for the production of construction and decorative materials, with the aim of replacing Norway spruce, oaks, and other traditionally used tree species. However, the biological resistance of beech wood—to decaying fungi, molds, and insects—is low, and in damp conditions its resistance must be increased with suitable preservatives or modification methods. In the present experiment, beech wood was first treated with water systems of nano-zinc oxide (0.1 to 3.3 wt.% of nano-ZnO) and/or polyethylene glycol 6000 (20 wt.% of PEG 6000), without/with additional thermal modification at 190 °C/2 h. In the presence of nano-ZnO, the decay resistance of beech wood to the brown-rot fungus Rhodonia placenta and the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor significantly increased, mainly after its additional thermal modification. The presence of nano-ZnO in beech wood—(a) alone, (b) with a subsequent application of PEG 6000, (c) with additional thermal modification—had a more apparent inhibition effect on T. versicolor than on R. placenta. This review aimed to determine the current state of research on the growth conditions and use pertaining to paulownia wood, mainly in European countries where paulownia has been introduced only relatively recently. Several studies carried out on Paulownia hybrids have shown significant differences in the growth dynamics of individual clones in their response to local environmental and climatic conditions. For example, dry biomass production yields in the second year of cultivation range from 1.5 t ha−1 to as much as 14 t ha−1. This diversity has manifested itself not only in growth characteristics but also in the properties of the wood and the possibilities for its use. Despite having clear similarities to the genus Paulownia, the cultivation of species and hybrids under different conditions has produced varying results. The best growing conditions for this wood (that make economic sense) are in the Middle East and Southern Europe. These regions have accumulated the most experience because of the earlier establishment of the crop. Today, paulownia cultivation is dominated by hybrids with selected traits that are propagated mainly in vitro. The most commonly planted hybrids include the clones in vitro 112, Cotevisa 2 and Shan Tong. The growth results and production capacity in central European countries are lower compared to Southern Europe. Experiments on paulownia cultivation are still relatively young, mainly consisting of replicating the cultivation of hybrids developed in Asia or Southern Europe. However, agronomic procedures are being developed and reactions to local climatic conditions are being studied. Wood in outdoor applications is subject to various decomposition factors. Wood degradation can be prevented by construction details, biocide protection of wood, wood modification or selection of naturally durable species. Unfortunately, most species in Europe do not have naturally durable wood. Imported tree species represent a new pool from which we can draw wood species with better natural durability and better resilience towards climate change. The performance of wood when used outdoors depends on the biologically active compounds (extractives) and the water exclusion efficacy. Considering decay, presence of biologically active compounds and water exclusion efficacy, we can estimate the density, modulus of elasticity, extractive content and resistance dose, which reflects the material properties of wood. Recently, the most commonly used model for this purpose is Meyer-Veltrup. Literature data indicate that the durability of the wood from native and new sites is not always comparable, so it is necessary to determine the resistance of non-native wood species from new sites. This paper presents original data on the wood's overall durability from American Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) grown in Slovenia. Experimental data show that the mature heartwood of Douglas fir is more durable than the wood of European larch (Larix decidua). Durability can be attributed to good water exclusion efficacy and inherent durability. Inherent durability is primarily the result of the high content of extractives. Based on the results, it can be concluded that American Douglas fir grown in Central Europe has a high potential for outdoor use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Construction using timber has seen a resurgence in light of global climate mitigation policies. Wood is a renewable resource, and engineered wood products are proving to be competitive against concrete and steel while having several advantages. However, while the renewable nature of wood in construction is a beneficial property for climate mitigation policies, the process of biodegradation introduces a challenge for service life planning. A review of hazard mapping is presented while developing contemporary hazard maps, occurrence maps and projected hazard maps for 2050 using representative concentration pathways (RCP) 2.6 and 8.5. The risk of timber decay is expected to increase in most of Europe as the temperatures rise, with a decrease expected in dryer regions. Termites are likely to experience a range expansion as more areas become suitable, while human activity and an increase in extreme weather events like floods are expected to facilitate dispersion. Marine borer species already present a risk in most European coastal regions; however, the effect of changes in water temperatures are likely to shift the boundaries for individual borer species. Overall, warmer climates are expected to increase the metabolic activity of all of these organisms leading to a general reduction in service life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Throughout history, humans have relied on wood for constructions, tool production or as an energy source. How and to what extent these human activities have impacted plant abundance and composition over a long-term perspective is, however, not well known. To address this knowledge gap, we combined 44,239 precisely dated tree-ring samples from economically and ecologically important tree species (spruce, fir, pine, oak) from historical buildings, and pollen-based plant cover estimates using the REVEALS model from 169 records for a total of 34 1° × 1° grid cells for Central Europe. Building activity and REVEALS estimates were compared for the entire study region (4-15°E, 46-51°N), and for low (<500 m asl) and mid/high elevations (≥500 m asl) in 100-year time windows over the period 1150-1850. Spruce and oak were more widely used in wooden constructions, amounting to 35 % and 32 %, respectively, compared to pine and fir. Besides wood properties and species abundance, tree diameters of harvested individuals, being similar for all four species, were found to be the most crucial criterion for timber selection throughout the last millennium. Regarding land use changes, from the 1150-1250's onwards, forest cover generally decreased due to deforestation until 1850, especially at lower elevations, resulting in a more heterogeneous landscape. The period 1650-1750 marks a distinct change in the environmental history of Central Europe; increasing agriculture and intense forest management practices were introduced to meet the high demands of an increasing population and intensifying industrialization, causing a decrease in palynological diversity, especially at low elevations. Likely the characteristic vegetation structure and composition of contemporary landscapes originated from that period. Fomes fomentarius (L.) Fr., (commonly known as Tinder fungus) is an abundant fungus in European beech old-growth forests and is important for nutrient cycles, food web dynamics, and biodiversity. The species was heavily reduced during the last centuries by forestry. Modern silviculture strategies in Central Europe aim to balance both the extraction of wood and promoting dead wood habitats. Such an approach is key to sustaining Fomes fomentarius as well as up to 600 saproxylic arthropods associated with the fungus. The aim of this study was to assess how dead wood type in combination with microclimate, resulting from different forest management strategies, affect the presence (occupancy) and abundance (percent cover occupied) of Fomes fomentarius fruit bodies at the stand- and dead wood object-scale. We experimentally extracted a standardized proportion of trees within 50 m by 50 m patches creating stumps, logs, snags, and logs with snags under two microclimate treatments (open canopy gap versus closed canopy) in a random block design. As a control, we defined cut stumps under closed canopies, as this is the common thinning approach in mature beech production forests. We tested the effects of alternative management strategies against the control using Generalized Linear Mixed-effects Models. At the stand-scale, our model revealed a significantly lower occupancy of Fomes fomentarius in control stands compared to treatments in which dead wood was not removed. The average cover of Fomes fomentarius on snags under a closed canopy, at both the stand- and dead wood object-scale, was higher than in control plots. However, effect size was weak at the object-scale. To increase this principal decomposer and boost important microhabitats for many arthropods, silviculture should aim to increase snags while maintaining dense forest canopies. Yet, at landscape scale, diversifying dead wood types and light conditions may boost overall saproxylic diversity. The increasing demand for and consumption of wood requires special attention in order to keep the wood industry sustainable. Therefore, timber reuse is presented as a solution to control the demand side. Unfortunately, the perception of timber decay poses a major barrier for reuse practices. Therefore, this article presents a factorised service life prediction model for wooden components that aims to promote their reuse. The model is based on the Australian service life prediction model, Timberlife, and the European CLICK design model's dose-response model. It predicts the potential for reuse of timber components based on their expected and remaining service life. To determine the service life, the model includes factors that differentiate between wood species, soil characteristics, regional climate and how the investigated components are connected to other components. The presented model focuses on in-ground and above-ground fungal decay and is limited to northwestern Europe. Opportunities for further research include, e.g., a further investigation of the soil characteristics' influence on decay, and evaluating the lag time for regions outside northwestern Europe. The durability of wood depends on its in-use environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to estimate the effects associated with macro climate and detail design as well as their interdependence. A numerical moisture model and two different decay prediction models were utilized for assessing the decay risk of a horizontal member and a joint exposed at 300 sites scattered across Europe. In general, the results obtained with both decay models exhibited strong similarities to the Scheffer climate index. Distinct discrepancies were however observed in regions with much precipitation where one model stood out as less dependent on precipitation and more dependent on relative humidity. The projected decay rate of the joint was about two to four times higher than that of the horizontal board, depending on the model employed. One of the models indicated that the relative difference between the horizontal member and the joint decreased with increasing amounts of precipitation. Due to lack of reliable experimental data, no inference regarding the model accuracy could be made. Future studies should focus on collecting empirical data on relative decay risk in different climates, preferably focusing on regions where the difference in projected decay depends on the model employed.
