We introduce a graph Ramsey game called Ramsey, Paper, Scissors. This game has two players, Proposer and Decider. Starting from an empty graph on $n$ vertices, on each turn Proposer proposes a potential edge and Decider simultaneously decides (without knowing Proposer's choice) whether to add it to the graph. Proposer cannot propose an edge which would create a triangle in the graph. The game ends when Proposer has no legal moves remaining, and Proposer wins if the final graph has independence number at least $s$. We prove a threshold phenomenon exists for this game by exhibiting randomized strategies for both players that are optimal up to constants. Namely, there exist constants $0B\sqrt{n}\log{n}$. This is a factor of $\Theta(\sqrt{\log{n}})$ larger than the lower bound coming from the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(3,s)$.

The paper alluded to in the title contains the following striking result: Let $I$ be the unit interval and $\Delta$ the Cantor set. If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. Our examples are rather specific and actually in all cases X is isomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$ if $K$ is a metric compactum of finite covering dimension., Comment: 4 pages

We correct a mistake in a lemma in the paper cited in the title and show that it did not affect any of the other results of the paper. To this end, we prove results on linearly disjoint field extensions that do not seem to be commonly known. We give an example to show that a separability assumption in one of these results cannot be dropped (doing so had led to the mistake). Further, we discuss recent generalizations of the original classification of defect extensions.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the main result in the paper by D.Y. Gao and X. Lu [On the extrema of a nonconvex functional with double-well potential in 1D, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. (2016) 67:62]. More precisely we provide a detailed study of the problem considered in that paper, pointing out the importance of the norm on the space $C^{1}[a,b]$; because no norm (topology) is mentioned on $C^{1}[a,b]$ we look at it as being a subspace of $W^{1,p}(a,b)$ for $p\in [1,\infty]$ endowed with its usual norm. We show that the objective function has not local extrema with the mentioned constraints for $p\in [1,4)$, and has (up to an additive constant) only a local maximizer for $p=\infty$, unlike the conclusion of the main result of the discussed paper where it is mentioned that there are (up to additive constants) two local minimizers and a local maximizer. We also show that the same conclusions are valid for the similar problem treated in the preprint by X. Lu and D.Y. We show that a relative entropy condition recently shown by Leger and Vasseur to imply uniqueness and stable $L^2$ dependence on initial data of Lax 1- or $n$-shock solutions of an $n\times n$ system of hyperbolic conservation laws with convex entropy implies Lopatinski stability in the sense of Majda. This means in particular that Leger and Vasseur's relative entropy condition represents a considerable improvement over the standard entropy condition of decreasing shock strength and increasing entropy along forward Hugoniot curves, which, in a recent example exhibited by Barker, Freist\"uhler and Zumbrun, was shown to fail to imply Lopatinski stability, even for systems with convex entropy. This observation bears also on the parallel question of existence, at least for small $BV$ or $H^s$ perturbations, Comment: to appear in Proceedings of the AMS

In this paper we study bipartite quantum correlations using techniques from tracial noncommutative polynomial optimization. We construct a hierarchy of semidefinite programming lower bounds on the minimal entanglement dimension of a bipartite correlation. This hierarchy converges to a new parameter: the minimal average entanglement dimension, which measures the amount of entanglement needed to reproduce a quantum correlation when access to shared randomness is free. For synchronous correlations, we show a correspondence between the minimal entanglement dimension and the completely positive semidefinite rank of an associated matrix. We then study optimization over the set of synchronous correlations by investigating quantum graph parameters. We unify existing bounds on the quantum chromatic number and the quantum stability number by placing them in the framework of tracial optimization. In particular, we show that the projective packing number, the projective rank, and the tracial rank arise naturally when considering tracial analogues of the Lasserre hierarchy for the stability and chromatic number of a graph. We consider the problem of maximizing a homogeneous polynomial on the unit sphere and its hierarchy of sum-of-squares relaxations. Exploiting the polynomial kernel technique, we obtain a quadratic improvement of the known convergence rate by Reznick and Doherty and Wehner. Specifically, we show that the rate of convergence is no worse than $$O(d^2/\ell ^2)$$ O ( d 2 / ℓ 2 ) in the regime $$\ell = \Omega (d)$$ ℓ = Ω ( d ) where $$\ell $$ ℓ is the level of the hierarchy and d the dimension, solving a problem left open in the recent paper by de Klerk and Laurent (arXiv:1904.08828 ). Importantly, our analysis also works for matrix-valued polynomials on the sphere which has applications in quantum information for the Best Separable State problem. By exploiting the duality relation between sums of squares and the Doherty–Parrilo–Spedalieri hierarchy in quantum information theory, we show that our result generalizes to nonquadratic polynomials the convergence rates of Navascués, Owari and Plenio.

The possibilities of exploiting the special structure of d.c. programs, which consist of optimizing the difference of convex functions, are currently more or less limited to variants of the DCA proposed by Pham Dinh Tao and Le Thi Hoai An in 1997. These assume that either the convex or the concave part, or both, are evaluated by one of their subgradients. In this paper we propose an algorithm which allows the evaluation of both the concave and the convex part by their proximal points. Additionally, we allow a smooth part, which is evaluated via its gradient. In the spirit of primal-dual splitting algorithms, the concave part might be the composition of a concave function with a linear operator, which are, however, evaluated separately. For this algorithm we show that every cluster point is a solution of the optimization problem. Furthermore, we show the connection to the Toland dual problem and prove a descent property for the objective function values of a primal-dual formulation of the problem. Convergence of the iterates is shown if this objective function satisfies the Kurdyka--\L ojasiewicz property. In the last part, we apply the algorithm to an image processing model.

In this short paper we combine the representability theorem introduced in [17, 18] with the theory of derived formal models introduced in [2] to prove the existence representability of the derived Hilbert space RHilb(X) for a separated k-analytic space X. Such representability results relies on a localization theorem stating that if X is a quasi-compact and quasi-separated formal scheme, then the \infty-category Coh^+(X^rig) of almost perfect complexes over the generic fiber can be realized as a Verdier quotient of the \infty-category Coh^+(X). The "exact subgraph" approach was recently introduced as a hierarchical scheme to get increasingly tight semidefinite programming relaxations of several NP-hard graph optimization problems. Solving these relaxations is a computational challenge because of the potentially large number of violated subgraph constraints. We introduce a computational framework for these relaxations designed to cope with these difficulties. We suggest a partial Lagrangian dual, and exploit the fact that its evaluation decomposes into several independent subproblems. This opens the way to use the bundle method from non-smooth optimization to minimize the dual function. Finally computational experiments on the Max-Cut, stable set and coloring problem show the excellent quality of the bounds obtained with this approach., arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1902.05345

We show that bounded self-contracted curves are rectifiable in metric spaces with weak lower curvature bound in a sense we introduce in this article. This class of spaces is wide and includes, for example, finite-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded below and Berwald spaces of nonnegative flag curvature. (To be more precise, our condition is regarded as a strengthened doubling condition and holds also for a certain class of metric spaces with upper curvature bound.) We also provide the non-embeddability of large snowflakes into (balls in) metric spaces in the same class. We follow the strategy of the last author's previous paper based on the small rough angle condition, where spaces with upper curvature bound are considered. We investigate the asymptotic properties of the trajectories generated by a second-order dynamical system with Hessian driven damping and a Tikhonov regularization term in connection with the minimization of a smooth convex function in Hilbert spaces. We obtain fast convergence results for the function values along the trajectories. The Tikhonov regularization term enables the derivation of strong convergence results of the trajectory to the minimizer of the objective function of minimum norm.

In this work we introduce the r-Hunter-Saxton equation, a generalisation of the Hunter-Saxton equation arising as extremals of an action principle posed in L_r. We characterise solutions to the Cauchy problem, quantifying the blow-up time and studying various symmetry reductions. In convex integer programming, various procedures have been developed to strengthen convex relaxations of sets of integer points. On the one hand, there exist several general-purpose methods that strengthen relaxations without specific knowledge of the set S of feasible integer points, such as popular linear programming or semi-definite programming hierarchies. On the other hand, various methods have been designed for obtaining strengthened relaxations for very specific sets S that arise in combinatorial optimization. We propose a new efficient method that interpolates between these two approaches. Our procedure strengthens any convex set containing a set S⊆ { 0 ,1 } n by exploiting certain additional information about S. Namely, the required extra information will be in the form of a Boolean formula ϕ defining the target set S. The new relaxation is obtained by “feeding” the convex set into the formula ϕ. We analyze various aspects regarding the strength of our procedure. In this short paper, we extend the classical Hoffman-Meeks Halfspace Theorem [Hoffman and Meeks, 'The strong halfspace theorem for minimal surfaces', Invent. Math. 101 (1990) 373-377] to self-shrinkers, that is: Let $P$ be a hyperplane passing through the origin. The only properly immersed self-shrinker $\Sigma $ contained in one of the closed half-space determined by $P$ is $\Sigma = P$. Our proof is geometric and uses a catenoid type hypersurface discovered by Kleene-Moller [Kleene and Moller, 'Self-shrinkers with a rotational symmetry', Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014) 3943-3963]. Also, using a similar geometric idea, we obtain that the only self-shrinker properly immersed in an closed cylinder $ \overline {B^{k+1} (R)} \times {\mathbb R}^{n-k}\subset {\mathbb R}^{n+1}$, for some $k\in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ and radius $R$, $R \leqslant \sqrt {2k}$, is the cylinder ${\mathbb S}^k (\sqrt {2k}) \times {\mathbb R}^{n-k}$. We also extend the above results for $\lambda $-hypersurfaces.

In 1985, Odoni showed that in characteristic 0 0 the Galois group of the n n -th iterate of the generic polynomial with degree d d is as large as possible. That is, he showed that this Galois group is the n n -th wreath power of the symmetric group S d S_d . We generalize this result to positive characteristic, as well as to the generic rational function. These results can be applied to prove certain density results in number theory, two of which are presented here. This work was partially completed by the late R.W.K. Odoni in an unpublished paper.

Diagonal groups are one of the classes of finite primitive permutation groups occurring in the conclusion of the O'Nan-Scott theorem. Several of the other classes have been described as the automorphism groups of geometric or combinatorial structures such as affine spaces or Cartesian decompositions, but such structures for diagonal groups have not been studied in general. The main purpose of this paper is to describe and characterise such structures, which we call diagonal semilattices. Unlike the diagonal groups in the O'Nan-Scott theorem, which are defined over finite characteristically simple groups, our construction works over arbitrary groups, finite or infinite. A diagonal semilattice depends on a dimension m and a group T. For m=2, it is a Latin square, the Cayley table of T, though in fact any Latin square satisfies our combinatorial axioms. However, for m≥3, the group T emerges naturally and uniquely from the axioms. (The situation somewhat resembles projective geometry, where projective planes exist in great profusion but higher-dimensional structures are coordinatised by an algebraic object, a division ring.) A diagonal semilattice is contained in the partition lattice on a set Ω, and we provide an introduction to the calculus of partitions. Many of the concepts and constructions come from experimental design in statistics. We also determine when a diagonal group can be primitive, or quasiprimitive (these conditions turn out to be equivalent for diagonal groups). In a previous paper, we obtained several "compact versions" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem, which allowed us to extrapolate the compactness of linear operators from just one space to the full range of weighted Lebesgue spaces, where these operators are bounded. In this paper, we study the extrapolation of compactness for bilinear operators in terms of bilinear Muckenhoupt weights. As applications, we easily recover and improve earlier results on the weighted compactness of commutators of bilinear Calder\'{o}n-Zygmund operators, bilinear fractional integrals and bilinear Fourier multipliers. More general versions of these results are recently due to Cao, Olivo and Yabuta (arXiv:2011.13191), whose approach depends on developing weighted versions of the Fr\'echet--Kolmogorov criterion of compactness, whereas we avoid this by relying on "softer" tools, which might have an independent interest in view of further extensions of the method., Comment: v3: final version, incorporated referee comments, to appear in Indagationes Mathematicae, 27 pages

Differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) are widely used for modeling of dynamical systems. In numerical analysis of DAEs, consistent initialization and index reduction are important preprocessing prior to numerical integration. Existing DAE solvers commonly adopt structural preprocessing methods based on combinatorial optimization. Unfortunately, the structural methods fail if the DAE has numerical or symbolic cancellations. For such DAEs, methods have been proposed to modify them to other DAEs to which the structural methods are applicable, based on the combinatorial relaxation technique. Existing modification methods, however, work only for a class of DAEs that are linear or close to linear. This paper presents two new modification methods for nonlinear DAEs: the substitution method and the augmentation method. Both methods are based on the combinatorial relaxation approach and are applicable to a large class of nonlinear DAEs. The substitution method symbolically solves equations for some derivatives based on the implicit function theorem and substitutes the solution back into the system. Instead of solving equations, the augmentation method modifies DAEs by appending new variables and equations. The augmentation method has advantages that the equation solving is not needed and the sparsity of DAEs is retained. When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify the spectrum $\mathfrak{B}$ of the Cartan subalgebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{S}, c)$. We then show that the quotient groupoid $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ acts on $\mathfrak{B}$, and that the corresponding action groupoid is exactly the Weyl groupoid of the Cartan pair. Lastly we show that, if the quotient map $\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S}$ admits a continuous section, then the Weyl twist is also given by an explicit continuous $2$-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{S} \ltimes \mathfrak{B}$., 32 pages

The aim of this paper is to generalize results known for the symplectic involutions on K3 surfaces to the order 3 symplectic automorphisms on K3 surfaces. In particular, we will explicitly describe the action induced on the lattice $\Lambda_{K3}$, isometric to the second cohomology group of a K3 surface, by a symplectic automorphism of order 3; we exhibit the maps $\pi_*$ and $\pi^*$ induced in cohomology by the rational quotient map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$, where $X$ is a K3 surface admitting an order 3 symplectic automorphism $\sigma$ and $Y$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient $X/\sigma$; we deduce the relation between the N\'eron--Severi group of $X$ and the one of $Y$. Applying these results we describe explicit geometric examples and generalize the Shioda--Inose structures, relating Abelian surfaces admitting order 3 endomorphisms with certain specific K3 surfaces admitting particular order 3 symplectic automorphisms., Comment: 28 pages. A question of Conca, Rossi, and Valla asks whether every quadratic Gorenstein ring $R$ of regularity three is Koszul. In a previous paper, we use idealization to answer their question, proving that in nine or more variables there exist quadratic Gorenstein rings of regularity three which are not Koszul. In this paper, we study the analog of the Conca-Rossi-Valla question when the regularity of $R$ is four or more. Let $R$ be a quadratic Gorenstein ring having $\mathrm{codim}\, R = c$ and $\mathrm{reg}\, R = r \ge 4$. We prove that if $c = r+1$ then $R$ is always Koszul, and for every $c \geq r+2$, we construct quadratic Gorenstein rings that are not Koszul, answering questions of Matsuda and Migliore-Nagel concerning the $h$-vectors of quadratic Gorenstein rings., Comment: v2 - Minor changes based on referee comments

Given a formal flat meromorphic connection over an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, in a previous paper we established existence of good formal structures and a good Deligne-Malgrange lattice after suitably blowing up. In this paper, we reinterpret and refine these results by introducing some related structures. We consider the turning locus, which is the set of points at which one cannot achieve a good formal structure without blowing up. We show that when the polar divisor has normal crossings, the turning locus is of pure codimension 1 within the polar divisor, and hence of pure codimension 2 within the full space; this had been previously established by Andre in the case of a smooth polar divisor. We also construct an irregularity sheaf and its associated b-divisor, which measure irregularity along divisors on blowups of the original space; this generalizes another result of Andre on the semicontinuity of irregularity in a curve fibration. One concrete consequence of these refinements is a process for resolution of turning points which is functorial with respect to regular morphisms of excellent schemes; this allows us to transfer the result from schemes to formal schemes, complex analytic varieties, and nonarchimedean analytic varieties., 27 pages; v4: refereed version; some technical edits in 2.2

Generalizing wavelets by adding desired redundancy and flexibility, framelets (i.e., wavelet frames) are of interest and importance in many applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Several key properties of framelets are high vanishing moments for sparse multiscale representation, fast framelet transforms for numerical efficiency, and redundancy for robustness. However, it is a challenging problem to study and construct multivariate nonseparable framelets, mainly due to their intrinsic connections to factorization and syzygy modules of multivariate polynomial matrices. Moreover, all the known multivariate tight framelets derived from spline refinable scalar functions have only one vanishing moment, and framelets derived from refinable vector functions are barely studied yet in the literature. In this paper, we circumvent the above difficulties through the approach of quasi-tight framelets, which behave almost identically to tight framelets. Employing the popular oblique extension principle (OEP), from an arbitrary compactly supported M-refinable vector function ϕ with multiplicity greater than one, we prove that we can always derive from ϕ a compactly supported multivariate quasi-tight framelet such that: (i) all the framelet generators have the highest possible order of vanishing moments; (ii) its associated fast framelet transform has the highest balancing order and is compact. For a refinable scalar function ϕ (i.e., its multiplicity is one), the above item (ii) often cannot be achieved intrinsically but we show that we can always construct a compactly supported OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight framelet derived from ϕ satisfying item (i). We point out that constructing OEP-based quasi-tight framelets is closely related to the generalized spectral factorization of Hermitian trigonometric polynomial matrices. Our proof is critically built on a newly developed result on the normal form of a matrix-valued filter, which is of interest and importance in itself for greatly facilitating the study of refinable vector functions and multiwavelets/multiframelets. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on OEP-based multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated framelet transforms with high balancing orders. This deepens our theoretical understanding of multivariate quasi-tight multiframelets and their associated fast multiframelet transforms.

In this paper we prove that a nodal hypersurface in P^4 with defect has at least (d-1)^2 nodes, and if it has at most 2(d-2)(d-1) nodes and d>6 then it contains either a plane or a quadric surface. Furthermore, we prove that a nodal double cover of P^3 ramified along a surface of degree 2d with defect has at least d(2d-1) nodes. Starting with work of Serre, Katz, and Swinnerton-Dyer, theta operators have played a key role in the study of $p$-adic and $\bmod p$ modular forms and Galois representations. This paper achieves two main results for theta operators on automorphic forms on PEL-type Shimura varieties: 1) the analytic continuation at unramified primes $p$ to the whole Shimura variety of the $\bmod p$ reduction of $p$-adic Maass--Shimura operators {\it a priori} defined only over the $\mu$-ordinary locus, and 2) the construction of new $\bmod p$ theta operators that do not arise as the $\bmod p$ reduction of Maass--Shimura operators. While the main accomplishments of this paper concern the geometry of Shimura varieties and consequences for differential operators, we conclude with applications to Galois representations. Our approach involves a careful analysis of the behavior of Shimura varieties and enables us to obtain more general results than allowed by prior techniques, including for arbitrary signature, vector weights, and unramified primes in CM fields of arbitrary degree., Comment: Accepted for publication in IMRN. 42 pages

Recently, two of the authors of this paper constructed cyclic cocycles on Harish-Chandra's Schwartz algebra of linear reductive Lie groups that detect all information in the $K$-theory of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebra. The main result in this paper is an index formula for the pairings of these cocycles with equivariant indices of elliptic operators for proper, cocompact actions. This is a follow-up paper of arXiv:1805.00115, where rational curves in surfaces that satisfy general positioned point and cross-ratio conditions were enumerated. A suitable correspondence theorem provided in arXiv:1509.07453 allowed us to use tropical geometry, and, in particular, a degeneration technique called floor diagrams. This correspondence theorem also holds in higher dimension. In the current paper, we introduce so-called cross-ratio floor diagrams and show that they allow us to determine the number of rational space curves that satisfy general positioned point and cross-ratio conditions. Moreover, graphical contributions are introduced which provide a novel and structured way of understanding multiplicities of floor decomposed curves in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Additionally, so-called condition flows on a tropical curve are used to reflect how conditions imposed on a tropical curve yield different types of edges. The Erd\H{o}s-Ginzburg-Ziv problem asks for the minimum integer $s$ such that any collection of $s$ points in the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$ contains $p$ points whose centroid is also a lattice point in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. For large $n$, this is essentially equivalent to asking for the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero. In this paper, we give a new upper bound for this problem for any fixed prime $p\geq 5$ and large $n$. In particular, we prove that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ without $p$ distinct elements summing to zero has size at most $C_p\cdot \left(2\sqrt{p}\right)^n$, where $C_p$ is a constant only depending on $p$. For $p$ and $n$ going to infinity, our bound is of the form $p^{(1/2)\cdot (1+o(1))n}$, whereas all previously known upper bounds were of the form $p^{(1-o(1))n}$ (with $p^n$ being a trivial bound). Our proof uses the so-called multi-colored sum-free theorem which is a consequence of the Croot-Lev-Pach polynomial method. This method and its consequences were already applied by Naslund as well as by Fox and the author to prove bounds for the problem studied in this paper. In a paper from 2001 (Journal of the LMS), Diestel and Leader offered a proof that a connected graph has a normal spanning tree if and only if it does not contain a minor from two specific forbidden classes of graphs, all of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Unfortunately, their proof contains a gap, and their result is incorrect. In this paper, we construct a third type of obstruction: an $\aleph_1$-sized graph without a normal spanning tree that contains neither of the two types described by Diestel and Leader as a minor. Let $S \subset \Bbb R^n$ be a smooth compact hypersurface with a strictly positive second fundamental form, $E$ be the Fourier extension operator on $S$, and $X$ be a Lebesgue measurable subset of $\Bbb R^n$. If $X$ contains a ball of each radius, then the problem of determining the range of exponents $(p,q)$ for which the estimate $\| Ef \|_{L^q(X)} \leq C \| f \|_{L^p(S)}$ holds is equivalent to the restriction conjecture. In this paper, we study the estimate under the following assumption on the set $X$: there is a number $0 < \alpha \leq n$ such that $|X \cap B_R| \leq c \, R^\alpha$ for all balls $B_R$ in $\Bbb R^n$ of radius $R \geq 1$. On the left-hand side of this estimate, we are integrating the function $|Ef(x)|^q$ against the measure $\chi_X dx$. Our approach consists of replacing the characteristic function $\chi_X$ of $X$ by an appropriate weight function $H$, and studying the resulting estimate in three different regimes: small values of $\alpha$, intermediate values of $\alpha$, and large values of $\alpha$. In the first regime, we establish the estimate by using already available methods. In the second regime, we prove a weighted H\"{o}lder-type inequality that holds for general non-negative Lebesgue measurable functions on $\Bbb R^n$, and combine it with the result from the first regime. In the third regime, we borrow a recent fractal Fourier restriction theorem of Du and Zhang and combine it with the result from the second regime. The subset E is universal in the sense that it does not depend on the function f to be approximated. Further in the paper this result is adapted to the case of $${\mathcal {M}}=G/H$$ M = G / H being a homogeneous space of an infinite compact second countable Hausdorff group. As a useful illustration the case of n-spheres with spherical harmonics is discussed. The construction of the subset E and approximant g is sketched briefly at the end of the paper.

This paper discusses an outer-approximation guided optimization method for constrained neural network inverse problems with rectified linear units. The constrained neural network inverse problems refer to an optimization problem to find the best set of input values of a given trained neural network in order to produce a predefined desired output in presence of constraints on input values. This paper analyzes the characteristics of optimal solutions of neural network inverse problems with rectified activation units and proposes an outer-approximation algorithm by exploiting their characteristics. The proposed outer-approximation guided optimization comprises primal and dual phases. The primal phase incorporates neighbor curvatures with neighbor outer-approximations to expedite the process. The dual phase identifies and utilizes the structure of local convex regions to improve the convergence to a local optimal solution. At last, computation experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared to a projected gradient method.

A classical theorem of Koksma states that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the sequence $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly distributed modulo one. In the present paper we extend Koksma's theorem to the pair correlation setting. More precisely, we show that for Lebesgue almost every $x>1$ the pair correlations of the fractional parts of $(x^n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ are asymptotically Poissonian. In Sarkozy (2001) the third author of this paper presented two conjectures on the additive decomposability of the sequence of ”smooth” (or ”friable”) numbers. Elsholtz and Harper (2015) proved (by using sieve methods) the second (less demanding) conjecture. The goal of this paper is to extend and sharpen their result in three directions by using a different approach (based on the theory of S -unit equations).

In this paper we study graded Bourbaki ideals. It is a well-known fact that for torsionfree modules over Noetherian normal domains, Bourbaki sequences exist. We give criteria in terms of certain attached matrices for a homomorphism of modules to induce a Bourbaki sequence. Special attention is given to graded Bourbaki sequences. In the second part of the paper, we apply these results to the Koszul cycles of the residue class field and determine particular Bourbaki ideals explicitly. We also obtain in a special case the relationship between the structure of the Rees algebra of a Koszul cycle and the Rees algebra of its Bourbaki ideal., Comment: 29 pages

In this paper we study 1/k geodesics, those closed geodesics that minimize on all subintervals of length $L/k$, where $L$ is the length of the geodesic. We develop new techniques to study the minimizing properties of these curves on doubled polygons, and demonstrate a sequence of doubled polygons whose closed geodesics exhibit unbounded minimizing properties. The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of examples of minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets, which illustrate certain aspects of this classification. These examples are constructed as actions on rooted trees. The acting groups are countable subgroups of the product or of the wreath product of groups. We discuss applications of our results to the study of attractors of dynamical systems and of minimal sets of foliations., 20 pages, 1 figure. This is the first of two papers in which we investigate the properties of the displacement functions of automorphisms of free groups (more generally, free products) on Culler-Vogtmann Outer space and its simplicial bordification - the free splitting complex - with respect to the Lipschitz metric. The theory for irreducible automorphisms being well-developed, we concentrate on the reducible case. Since we deal with the bordification, we develop all the needed tools in the more general setting of deformation spaces, and their associated free splitting complexes. In the present paper we study the local properties of the displacement function. In particular, we study its convexity properties and the behaviour at bordification points, by geometrically characterising its continuity-points. We prove that the global-simplex-displacement spectrum of $Aut(F_n)$ is a well-ordered subset of $\mathbb R$, this being helpful for algorithmic purposes. We introduce a weaker notion of train tracks, which we call {\em partial train tracks} (which coincides with the usual one for irreducible automorphisms) and we prove that, for any automorphism, points of minimal displacement - minpoints - coincide with the marked metric graphs that support partial train tracks. We show that any automorphism, reducible or not, has a partial train track (hence a minpoint) either in the outer space or its bordification. We show that, given an automorphism, any of its invariant free factors is seen in a partial train track map. In a subsequent paper we will prove that level sets of the displacement functions are connected, and we will apply that result to solve certain decision problems., 50 pages. In this paper we study some cube packing problems. In particular we are interested in compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n,n\geq 2$, which contain boundaries of cubes with all side lengths in $(0,1)$. We show here that such sets must have lower box dimension at least $n-0.5$ and we will also provide sharp examples. In this paper we study the isotypic decomposition of the regular module of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a semisimple Hopf algebra, the idempotents realizing the isotypic decomposition can be explicitly expressed in terms of characters and the Haar integral. In this paper we investigate Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property, which are not necessarily semisimple. We find explicit expressions for idempotents in terms of Hopf-algebraic data, where the Haar integral is replaced by the regular character of the dual Hopf algebra. For a large class of Hopf algebras, these are shown to form a complete set of orthogonal idempotents. We give an example which illustrates that the Chevalley property is crucial., Comment: 29 pages

The original definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky has been categorified and generalised in several ways over the course of the past 20 years, giving rise to cluster theory. This study lead to Iyama and Yang's generalised cluster categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ coming from $n$-Calabi-Yau triples $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$. In this paper, we use some classic tools of homological algebra to give a deeper understanding of such categories $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Let $k$ be a field, $n\geq 3$ an integer and $\mathcal{T}$ a $k$-linear triangulated category with a triangulated subcategory $\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ and a subcategory $\mathcal{M}=\text{add}(M)$ such that $(\mathcal{T}, \mathcal{T}^{fd}, \mathcal{M})$ is an $n$-Calabi-Yau triple. In this paper, we prove some properties of the triangulated categories $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$. Our first result gives a relation between the Hom-spaces in these categories, using limits and colimits. Our second result is a Gap Theorem in $\mathcal{T}$, showing when the truncation triangles split. Moreover, we apply our two theorems to present an alternative proof to a result by Guo, originally stated in a more specific setup of dg $k$-algebras $A$ and subcategories of the derived category of dg $A$-modules. This proves that $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ is Hom-finite and $(n-1)$-Calabi-Yau, its object $M$ is $(n-1)$-cluster tilting and the endomorphism algebras of $M$ over $\mathcal{T}$ and over $\mathcal{T}/\mathcal{T}^{fd}$ are isomorphic. This paper concerns the density of the Hartman--Watson law. Yor (1980) obtained an integral formula that gives a closed-form expression of the Hartman--Watson density. In this paper, based on Yor's formula, we provide alternative integral representations for the density. This work has been motivated by recent papers that quantify the density of values of generic quadratic forms and other polynomials at integer points, in particular ones that use Rogers' second moment estimates. In this paper we establish such results in a very general framework. Given any subhomogeneous function (a notion to be defined) $f: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}$, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition on the approximating function $\psi$ for guaranteeing that a generic element $f\circ g$ in the $G$-orbit of $f$ is $\psi$-approximable; that is, $|f\circ g(\mathbf{v})| \le \psi(\|\mathbf{v}\|)$ for infinitely many $\mathbf{v} \in \mathbb{Z}^n$. We also deduce a sufficient condition in the case of uniform approximation. This paper concerns the existence of transonic shock solutions to the 2-D steady compressible Euler system in an almost flat finite nozzle ( in the sense that it is a generic small perturbation of a flat one ), under physical boundary conditions proposed by Courant-Friedrichs in \cite{CourantFriedrichs1948}, in which the receiver pressure is prescribed at the exit of the nozzle. In the resulting free boundary problem, the location of the shock-front is one of the most desirable information one would like to determine. However, the location of the normal shock-front in a flat nozzle can be anywhere in the nozzle so that it provides little information on the possible location of the shock-front when the nozzle's boundary is perturbed. So one of the key difficulties in looking for transonic shock solutions is to determine the shock-front. To this end, a free boundary problem for the linearized Euler system will be proposed, whose solution will be taken as an initial approximation for the transonic shock solution. In this paper, a sufficient condition in terms of the geometry of the nozzle and the given exit pressure is derived which yields the existence of the solutions to the proposed free boundary problem. Once an initial approximation is obtained, a further nonlinear iteration could be constructed and proved to lead to a transonic shock solution., 53 pages

A goal of the paper is to prove new inequalities connecting some functionals of probability distribution functions. These inequalities are based on the strict convexity of functions used in the definition of the functionals. The starting point is the paper “Cramer–von Mises distance: probabilistic interpretation, confidence intervals and neighborhood of model validation” by Ludwig Baringhaus and Norbert Henze. The present paper provides a generalization of inequality obtained in probabilistic interpretation of the Cramer–von Mises distance. If the equality holds there, then a chance to give characterization of some probability distribution functions appears. Considering this fact and a special character of the functional, it is possible to create a class of free-of-distribution two sample tests.

In this paper, we study a system of three evolutionary operator equations involving fractional powers of selfadjoint, monotone, unbounded, linear operators having compact resolvents. This system constitutes a generalized and relaxed version of a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type modelling tumor growth that has originally been proposed in Hawkins-Daarud et al. (Int. J. Numer. Math. Biomed. Eng. 28 (2012), 3-24). The original phase field system and certain relaxed versions thereof have been studied in recent papers co-authored by the present authors and E. Rocca. The model consists of a Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor cell fraction, coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation for a function S representing the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. Effects due to fluid motion are neglected. Motivated by the possibility that the diffusional regimes governing the evolution of the different constituents of the model may be of different (e.g., fractional) type, the present authors studied in a recent note a generalization of the systems investigated in the abovementioned works. Under rather general assumptions, well-posedness and regularity results have been shown. In particular, by writing the equation governing the evolution of the chemical potential in the form of a general variational inequality, also singular or nonsmooth contributions of logarithmic or of double obstacle type to the energy density could be admitted. In this note, we perform an asymptotic analysis of the governing system as two (small) relaxation parameters approach zero separately and simultaneously. Star configurations of points are configurations with known (and conjectured) extremal behaviors among all configurations of points in $\mathbb P_k^n$; additional interest come from their rich structure, which allows them to be studied using tools from algebraic geometry, combinatorics, commutative algebra and representation theory. In the present paper we investigate the more general problem of determining the structure of symbolic powers of a wide generalization of star configurations of points (introduced by Geramita, Harbourne, Migliore and Nagel) called star configurations of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P_k^n$. Here (1) we provide explicit minimal generating sets of the symbolic powers $I^{(m)}$ of these ideals $I$, (2) we introduce a notion of $\delta$-c.i. quotients, which generalize ideals with linear quotients, and show that $I^{(m)}$ have $\delta$-c.i. quotients, (3) we show that the shape of the Betti tables of these symbolic powers is determined by certain "Koszul" strands and we prove that a little bit more than the bottom half of the Betti table has a regular, almost hypnotic, pattern, and (4) we provide a closed formula for all the graded Betti numbers in these strands. As a special case of (2) we deduce that symbolic powers of ideals of star configurations of points have linear quotients. We also improve and extend results by Galetto, Geramita, Shin and Van Tuyl, and provide explicit new general formulas for the minimal number of generators and the symbolic defects of star configurations. Finally, inspired by Young tableaux, we introduce a technical tool which may be of independent interest: it is a "canonical" way of writing any monomial in any given set of polynomials.
