Objective: Passive stiffness, a biomechanical parameter, has a potential influence on running economy, thus playing a pivotal role in performance. This study aimed to quantify passive stiffness of the Achilles tendon and gastrocnemius muscle using myotonometry throughout an incremental running protocol. Methods: Twenty-one male participants underwent a multistage incremental test (Bordeaux test) on a treadmill until exhaustion. Passive stiffness of the gastrocnemius muscle and Achilles tendon was measured using a MyotonPRO device. Measurements were taken before, during, and after the incremental test. Results: Our findings indicated that passive stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius decreased at rest between prerun and postrun assessments (−20.12 N·m−1, P =.012). Furthermore, during the test, stiffness increased at low intensity (at 50% of maximal aerobic speed: +104.8 N·m−1, P =.042), returning to baseline values as intensity increased. Conclusions: Throughout an incremental running protocol, both Achilles tendon and gastrocnemius muscle stiffness initially increased and then decreased with escalating percentages of maximal aerobic speed. Solidification models are key during simulation of several industrial processes involving thermoplastics. For simplicity, crystallinity is often not considered within these models, despite it being responsible for the phase transition. Several advanced methods, which consider crystallinity as the onset of solidification have been proposed in literature however, these have primarily been applied to classical homopolymers such as polypropylene (PP). The focus of this study is to develop a model that can capture the rheological response observed during the transition from liquid‐like to solid‐like behavior in injection molding grade polyetheretherketone (PEEK) due to crystallinity. Isothermal rheological experiments are performed alongside dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization to correlate relative crystallinity to the apparent increase in viscosity. The model is extended to nonisothermal processes through the incorporation of the Nakamura model. Nonisothermal crystallization rheology experiments are performed and compared with a simulation of the oscillating rheometer process for validation. The modeled viscosity response and crystallization half‐time reproduced the experimental data with sufficient accuracy at low cooling rates, with an error of less than 5% up to cooling rates of 20°C min−1. Particle surface chemistry and internal softness are two fundamental parameters in governing the mechanical properties of dense colloidal suspensions, dictating structure and flow, therefore of interest from materials fabrication to processing. Here, we modulate softness by tuning the crosslinker content of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels, and we adjust their surface properties by co-polymerization with polyethylene glycol chains, controlling adhesion, friction and fuzziness. We investigate the distinct effects of these parameters on the entire mechanical response from restructuring to complete fluidization of jammed samples at varying packing fractions under large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, and we complement rheological data with colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy to unravel variations in the particles' surface properties. Our results indicate that surface properties play a fundamental role at smaller packings; decreasing adhesion and friction at contact causes the samples to yield and fluidify in a lower deformation range. Instead, increasing softness or fuzziness has a similar effect at ultra-high densities, making suspensions able to better adapt to the applied shear and reach complete fluidization over a larger deformation range. These findings shed new light on the single-particle parameters governing the mechanical response of dense suspensions subjected to deformation, offering synthetic approaches to design materials with tailored mechanical properties. Eukaryotic cell rheology has important consequences for vital processes such as adhesion, migration, and differentiation. Experiments indicate that cell cytoplasm can exhibit both elastic and viscous characteristics in different regimes, while the transport of fluid (cytosol) through the cross-linked filamentous scaffold (cytoskeleton) is reminiscent of mass transfer by diffusion through a porous medium. To gain insights into this complex rheological behaviour, we construct a computational model for the cell cytoplasm as a poroviscoelastic material formulated on the principles of nonlinear continuum mechanics, where we model the cytoplasm as a porous viscoelastic scaffold with an embedded viscous fluid flowing between the pores to model the cytosol. Baseline simulations (neglecting the viscosity of the cytosol) indicate that the system exhibits seven different regimes across the parameter space spanned by the viscoelastic relaxation timescale of the cytoskeleton and the poroelastic diffusion timescale; these regimes agree qualitatively with experimental measurements. Furthermore, the theoretical model also allows us to elucidate the additional role of pore fluid viscosity, which enters the system as a distinct viscous timescale. We show that increasing this viscous timescale hinders the passage of the pore fluid (reducing the poroelastic diffusion) and makes the cytoplasm rheology increasingly incompressible, shifting the phase boundaries between the regimes. The incorporation of okara, a by-product of soybean milk production, into gluten-free products such as crispy waffles poses challenges due to the absence of gluten's viscoelastic properties and the high fiber content of okara. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of okara flour on the rheological properties, physical attributes, and sensory qualities of gluten-free waffles. Waffle batters with varying levels of okara flour (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%) were prepared, and their rheological properties were analyzed using oscillatory shear and creep-recovery tests. Physical properties, proximate composition, cholesterol and glucose adsorption capacities, storage stability, and sensory attributes were also assessed. The results demonstrated that increasing okara flour content improved batter elasticity and viscosity (with complex viscosity reaching up to 10,923 Pa·s for 40% okara flour) but decreased spread ratio by up to 45% and increased moisture content by approximately 2.7%. Higher okara content also led to a 16% decrease in brightness (L*) and increased hardness, reaching 325.26 g/s at 40% substitution. Sensory evaluation revealed that waffles with 30% okara flour were preferred for their texture and overall liking, with a score of 7.43 compared to higher substitution levels. Cholesterol and glucose adsorption capacities were high in okara flour, contributing to potential health benefits. Storage stability tests showed acceptable moisture content, water activity, and microbiological safety over 60 days, though hardness decreased by about 42%. In conclusion, okara flour enhances the nutritional profile of gluten-free waffles, but its impact on texture and flavor requires careful formulation adjustments to optimize consumer acceptance. Many energy absorption applications utilize flexible polymeric foams for their viscoelastic properties. It is desired that the material will perform consistently across repeated compression cycles. This study examines the effect of fatigue at low strain rates on the viscoelasticity of open‐cell polyurethane foam. Six polyurethanes of the same base composition with two porosities (70% and 80%) and three chemical indexes (79i, 100i, and 121i) are tested. Large deformation cyclic compression of the foams is conducted on a universal testing system (UTS). These data are then post‐processed leveraging dynamic mechanical analysis Fourier transform rheology to characterize changes in the viscoelasticity of the materials over fatigue cycles. Results show that foams can increase or decrease in stiffness up to 10% over 104 cycles. Specifically, higher chemical index, higher excitation frequency, and larger excitation amplitude correlate with a more pronounced decrease in stiffness. Damping can also change by 15% and correlates with chemical index and excitation frequency. Consequently, the findings suggest that internal foam structure and bulk material properties as well as applied loading parameters affect the viscoelastic fatigue response of flexible polymeric foams. In this paper, the rheological properties and viscosity reduction mechanism of waxy crude oil were reviewed. Firstly, the rheological behavior of waxy crude oil was introduced from the aspects of microscopic properties, viscosity, yield properties, thixotropy and viscoelasticity. Secondly, the effects of dissolved gas, light crude oil or alcohol on the rheological properties of crude oil were described respectively. Finally, the shortcomings and limitations of existing studies were further prospected. The future research will focus on exploring the mechanism of the effect of shear history on the microstructure of wax crystals, and establishing the constitutive model of crude oil considering the yield strain and yield stress based on the morphological and structural changes of wax crystals. Furthermore, to explore the mechanism and influence law of light component dissolution on crude oil rheology, and establish a reliable viscoelastic-thixotropic model of crude oil under the conditions of unsteady shear, wide range shear rate and ultra-low shear rate, will be the prerequisite and basis for the numerical calculation in restarting of gelled crude oil containing light component at low temperature. An analysis and modeling of the linear viscoelastic behavior of maltenes (M) blended with styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) are presented in this study. M were mixed with different amounts of SBS (Elastomer, E) (0.25–80 wt%) to investigate the effect of polymer concentration on linear viscoelastic response of the blends; storage and loss moduli were obtained from small amplitude oscillatory shear tests (SAOS). Time–temperature superposition master curves were analyzed by a Maxwell multi-modal model with up to nine relaxation times. Han, Cole–Cole and Van Gurp-Palmen diagrams were prepared from the rheological data. Two different responses were observed: At low E contents, a dispersed system rheological response was observed and verified by microscopy with elastomer as the dispersed phase and maltenes as the matrix, while at high E content the response was that of a co-continuous system. Mixtures with E > 2 wt% exhibited change in their thermomechanical properties with a phase inversion at E > 50 wt%. Furthermore, at low E concentration resins stabilize the dispersed phase by diminishing the magnitude of the viscoelastic moduli, conversely, at high E concentration a swelled polymer-rich phase creates a network that significantly influences of the viscoelastic properties. Objective: The aggregation behavior of silk fibroin under specific conditions can influence its kinetic behavior and viscoelastic properties, thereby affecting biological properties of silk fibroin materials. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the self-assembly aggregation behavior of silk fibroin and explored the conditions for enhancing its mechanical performance and biological properties. Methods: Regenerated silk fibroin was extracted and prepared from domestic silkworm cocoons, and the optimal assembly conditions were determined through turbidity experiments. Rheological experiments were conducted to study the influence of Na+ on the kinetic behavior and viscoelastic properties of silk fibroin solutions. Cell proliferation experiments were carried out to investigate the biological properties of silk fibroin. Results: The extracted regenerated silk fibroin primarily exhibited a random coiled structure. The optimal in vitro self-assembly conditions involved assembly of a 4 mg/mL solution at 70 ℃ for 6 hours. The addition of Ca2+ to the silk fibroin solution inhibited in vitro self-assembly, while the addition of Na+ accelerated the assembly rate and increased the degree of assembly. Furthermore, with increasing Na+ concentration, the gel strength of silk fibroin gradually increased, leading to a more stable gel network. Cell proliferation experiments demonstrated that the solution of regenerated silk fibroin was more conducive to cell growth and proliferation than its self-assembled fibers. Conclusion: The concentration, temperature, assembly time, and ions all have an impact on the in vitro self-assembly aggregation behavior of silk fibroin. This study provides preliminary research on the self-assembly aggregation conditions and biological properties of silk fibroin, offering experimental basis for improving the performance of silk fibroin as a food packaging material.

The effects of using a hard (artisanal) margarine (which has a higher lipidic and lower aqueous contents) and using a soft (commercial) margarine (which has a lower lipidic and higher aqueous contents), along with a casein hydrolysate, on the rheological properties of different biscuit short doughs were examined. The characteristic parameters in the linear viscoelastic range (LVER) were analysed by stress sweep at 6.3 rad/s and 25 °C. The two margarines showed similar values of strain amplitude (γmax), but the hard margarine exhibited a significantly higher firmness in the LVER, as expected. An analogous result was found for the biscuit doughs made with hard margarine and soft margarine. The addition of a casein hydrolysate (CH) to both biscuit doughs produced an increase in the loss factor, indicating a loss of the solid-like character in the dough networks. Nevertheless, a different trend in the consistency of the dough, which depended on the type of margarine, was found. While, after adding CH, the dough made with soft margarine showed a significant reduction in rigidity, the dough with hard margarine exhibited an increased firmness upon CH addition. Yield stress tests showed that CH facilitates the transition from elastic to plastic deformation at the yield point more intensely in the dough with soft margarine.

The relaxation spectrum is a fundamental viscoelastic characteristic from which other material functions used to describe the rheological properties of polymers can be determined. The spectrum is recovered from relaxation stress or oscillatory shear data. Since the problem of the relaxation spectrum identification is ill-posed, in the known methods, different mechanisms are built-in to obtain a smooth enough and noise-robust relaxation spectrum model. The regularization of the original problem and/or limit of the set of admissible solutions are the most commonly used remedies. Here, the problem of determining an optimally smoothed continuous relaxation time spectrum is directly stated and solved for the first time, assuming that discrete-time noise-corrupted measurements of a relaxation modulus obtained in the stress relaxation experiment are available for identification. The relaxation time spectrum model that reproduces the relaxation modulus measurements and is the best smoothed in the class of continuous square-integrable functions is sought. Based on the Hilbert projection theorem, the best-smoothed relaxation spectrum model is found to be described by a finite sum of specific exponential–hyperbolic basis functions. For noise-corrupted measurements, a quadratic with respect to the Lagrange multipliers term is introduced into the Lagrangian functional of the model's best smoothing problem. As a result, a small model error of the relaxation modulus model is obtained, which increases the model's robustness. The necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are derived whose unique solution yields a direct analytical formula of the best-smoothed relaxation spectrum model. The related model of the relaxation modulus is given. A computational identification algorithm using the singular value decomposition is presented, which can be easily implemented in any computing environment. The approximation error, model smoothness, noise robustness, and identifiability of the polymer real spectrum are studied analytically. It is demonstrated by numerical studies that the algorithm proposed can be successfully applied for the identification of one- and two-mode Gaussian-like relaxation spectra. The applicability of this approach to determining the Baumgaertel, Schausberger, and Winter spectrum is also examined, and it is shown that it is well approximated for higher frequencies and, in particular, in the neighborhood of the local maximum. However, the comparison of the asymptotic properties of the best-smoothed spectrum model and the BSW model a priori excludes a good approximation of the spectrum in the close neighborhood of zero-relaxation time. As temperature and salt-resistant materials, hydrophobically associating polymers can form a reversible spatial network structure through the interaction between their hydrophobic groups, effectively improve the viscosity of the polymer solution through association, and enhance the temperature and salt resistance of the polymer. Hydrophobically associating monomers have different effects on the properties of polymer solutions. Herein, acrylic acid, acrylamide, and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid were used as hydrophilic monomers. The three hydrophobic monomers with different carbon chain lengths were prepared by the bromination reaction. Hydrophobic associating polymers DQM1-PAM, DQM2-PAM, and DQM3-PAM were prepared by aqueous solution free-radical polymerization. The structure–activity relationship of the hydrophobic monomers with different carbon chain lengths on polymers was studied. It was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H-NMR that the target product was successfully synthesized. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that with increasing hydrophobic carbon chain length, the hydrophobic microarea of molecular aggregation increased, forming a closer spatial network structure. Thermogravimetric and fluorescence tests revealed that with increasing hydrophobic carbon chain length of polymer molecules, the polymerization temperature resistance increased, intermolecular association degree increased, and critical association concentration decreased. Rheological property evaluation revealed that the viscosity of 0.5% polymer DQM1-PAM, DQM2-PAM, and DQM3-PAM was 71.32, 100.21, and 118.79 mPa·s after shearing at 120 °C and 170 s−1 for 1 h. With the increase in the carbon chain length, the retention rate of shear viscosity of polymer in a salt solution increased, showing good salt resistance. Concurrently, the molecular aggregation microarea of a solution with 0.5% polymer, degree of molecular chain action, viscoelasticity of the solution (G' > G''), and thixotropic area all increased. A comprehensive understanding of the inter‐bubble dynamics and the cluster formations in non‐Newtonian fluids is pivotal for chemical and biomedical engineering applications. In this review, we summarize current research efforts to provide a fundamental understanding and engineering principles of the interactions between bubbles and the dynamics of bubble clusters in non‐Newtonian fluids. Although the majority of research is still predominantly conducted through experimentation, the significance of computational fluid dynamics in elucidating interaction mechanisms has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Moreover, the gas‐liquid systems reviewed in this paper are driven by gravity, which is closer to the actual industrial processes. We indicate the effects of non‐Newtonian fluid special rheological properties (especially viscoelasticity and shear‐dependent viscosity) on the interaction between multiple bubbles and the formation of clusters. We summarize the main empirical correlations in related research, which are useful for the optimization of industry. In this research, the effects of modifiers on the high-temperature rheological and fatigue properties of asphalt were investigated by utilizing montmorillonite (MMT) and organic montmorillonite (OMMT) as modifiers for 70# and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) asphalt, respectively. Temperature scanning tests and linear amplitude scanning (LAS) tests were performed using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to evaluate the viscoelasticity, rutting resistance, and fatigue properties of the asphalt binder. The rheological properties under high-temperature and high-frequency conditions were also characterized by the Black curve and Cole–Cole transformation. Additionally, the elastic properties of the asphalt were examined using nanoindentation (NI). The results of the DSR tests indicate that the incorporation of MMT/OMMT into asphalt enhances its elastic properties and reduces its viscous properties, leading to improved resistance to shear deformation, rutting, and fatigue. Moreover, the NI tests show that the addition of MMT or OMMT improves the elastic properties of the asphalt, while also validating the effectiveness of nanoindentation in assessing the viscoelasticity of asphalt. AbstractIn our research described here, a rheological model was proposed to be used to determine the rheological behavior of drilling mud, which is one of the most important factors in determining a suitable mud used in drilling. The parameters of the rheological model were determined by a curve fitting method using more than 95 experimental data pairs available in the literature for seven different viscoelastic drilling muds. The relationship between shear stress and shear rate obtained from the proposed model was compared with the relationships obtained from the Herschel–Bulkley, Power-law, and Bingham plastic models. The data obtained from the proposed model was also compared with the experimental data existing in the related literature. The average percentage differences between the experimental data and the data obtained from the proposed model for the drilling fluids were 5.16, 0.623, and 8.8, respectively, which were considerably lower than the average differences between the experimental data and the data acquired from the three mentioned models. The Power-law model outperformed our proposed model for only three drilling muds. As a result, we suggest that the rheological model proposed here can be easily used to determine the rheological properties of some kinds of drilling muds. AbstractNanomaterials were widely employed to improve the physicochemical properties of various chemicals in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In the present study, the novel Janus amphiphilic silica nanoparticle (JNS) was successfully prepared, whose structure and property were confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Zeta potential measurement, transmission electron microscopy, interfacial tension and contact angle measurements. Then the effects of JNS, hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (HLS) and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (HBS) on the viscosity of the hydrophobic modified HPAM (HOA101) solution were studied. It was found that JNS exhibited a greater ability to enhance the viscosity, temperature resistance and salt resistance of HOA101 solution in comparison to the other two polymer nanofluids. The interaction mechanisms between nanoparticles and HOA101 were proposed, which were verified by the viscoelasticity measurements and control experiments. Core flooding experiments and micromodel flooding tests demonstrated that the JNS/HOA101 dispersion could effectively expand the sweep efficiency to highly increase the oil recovery from 8.4% to 14.3%. The polycaprolactone-polydimethylsiloxane-polycaprolactone (PCL-PDMSPCL) triblock copolymer films of variable PCL chain are analyzed for rheological characteristics in this paper. The dynamics of viscoelastic behavior of photocrosslinked films above their crystal melting temperature (Tcm) is measured using oscillatory shear rheology experiments. The frequency sweep tests are analyzed at 0.1% strain as obtained from linear viscoelastic region. Shear thinning is observed in the study of complex viscosity. It has been noted that viscosity rises with increase in crosslink density and decrease in with PCL chain length. Time-dependent effect on the copolymer films has been analyzed by creep recovery behavior. The Burgers model is fitted in creep compliance data to analyze its viscoelastic and viscous region. An examination of structure recovery revealed that recovery increased as PCL chain length decreased. Tensile strength and percentage elongation are studied at ambient conditions with a universal testing machine, while storage modulus and tan δ are analyzed by a dynamic mechanical analyzer at varying temperatures. A systematic analytical study of the mathematical properties of the previously constructed nonlinear model for shear flow of thixotropic viscoelastic-plastic media, which takes into account the mutual influence of the deformation process and structure evolution, is continued. A set of two nonlinear differential equations describing the processes of shear at a constant rate and stress relaxation is obtained. Equation set describing creep is derived; a general solution of the Cauchy problem for the set is constructed in an explicit form (the equations of the families of creep, and structuredness curves are derived). For arbitrary six material parameters and (increasing) material function that govern the model, basic properties of the families stress-strain curves at constant strain rates, stress relaxation curves and creep curves generated by the model, and the features of structuredness evolution under these types of loading are analytically studied. The dependences of these curves on time, shear rate, stress level, initial strain, and initial structuredness of the material, as well as on the material parameters and function of the model, are studied. Several indicators of the applicability of the model are found which are convenient to check with experimental data. It was examined what effects typical for viscoelastic-plastic media can be described by the model and what unusual effects (unusual properties) are generated by a change in structuredness in comparison with typical stress-strain curves, relaxation curves, and creep curves of structurally stable materials. In particular, it is proved that creep curves always increase in time and have oblique asymptote, and structuredness under constant stress is always monotonous (unlike other loading modes), but can decrease or increase depending on the relation between the stress level and initial structuredness. The same condition controls creep curves to be convex up or down: at a certain (calculated) critical load creep curves change from convexity up (under smaller loads) to convexity down, and the structuredness becomes ascending instead of descending. The analysis proved the ability of the model to describe behavior of not only liquid-like viscoelastoplastic media, but also solid-like (thickening, hardening, hardened) media: creep, relaxation, recovery, a number of typical properties of experimental relaxation curves, creep and stress-strain curves, strain rate and strain hardening, flow under constant stress and so on. Biodegradable green composites of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(L-lactide) (PLA) fibers were initially melt-blended aiming to obtain balanced comprehensive properties. According to the morphological observations, the PLA fibers were uniformly embedded in the PBS matrix. Rheology measurements suggested that the incorporation of PLA fibers improved the viscoelasticity of PBS melt. The percolation network of PLA fibers was formed at content of 20 wt%. The presence of PLA fibers inhibited the crystallization and reduced the isothermal crystallization rate of PBS in the composites. Moreover, the reinforcing effect of PLA fibers on the PBS matrix was found to be very significant. The storage modulus and tensile modulus of the composite with 30 wt% PLA fibers were 74% and 94% higher than those of neat PBS, respectively. PBS/PLA fiber composites prepared by simple melt blending method displayed the combination of enhanced melt strength and modulus, while maintaining the biodegradability of PBS matrix, which is of great potential for the wider practical application of environmentally friendly polymers. The use of hydrogels has exponentially increased in recent years in many fields, such as biology, medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and more. These materials are so widely used because their mechanical properties change drastically with the different chemical compositions of the constituent polymer chains, making them highly versatile for different applications. We introduce a numerical simulation tool that relies on the Discrete Element Method to reproduce and predict the behavior of hydrogel spheres. We first use a benchmark test, namely an oscillatory compression test on a single hydrogel, to calibrate the model parameters, obtaining a good agreement on the material's rheological properties. Specifically, we show that the normal modified storage and loss moduli, E' and E", obtained in the simulation match the experimental data with a small relative error, around 3%, for E' and 11% for E". This result aligns with recent work on numerical modeling of hydrogels, introducing a novel approach with bonded particles and a viscoelastic constitutive relation that can capture a wide range of applications thanks to the higher number of elements. Moreover, we validate the model on a particle-particle compression test by comparing the simulation output with the contact force in the compression direction, again obtaining promising results. In this study, compound regeneration of SBS-modified bitumen (SMB) was carried out by a composite rejuvenator composed of furfural extraction oil (FEO) and 1,6-hexanediol diglycidyl ether (HDDGE) in the presence of catalyst triethanolamine (TEOA). SMB was subjected to three aging-regeneration cycles, and the physical and rheological properties, toughness and tenacity, and chemical structures of the SMB after each aging-regeneration cycle were tested to investigate the regeneration effect of the composite rejuvenator on SMB at different numbers of cycles. The ductility decreases and low-temperature properties deteriorate as the number of cycles increased, but the high-temperature properties of the SMB are improved. The complex modulus aging index and phase angle aging index indicate that the viscous behavior of SMB weakens after the second and third aging. The degree of viscoelasticity and toughness recovery decreases with the increase in the number of cycles, and the tenacity of SMB after the third aging-regeneration cycle is basically lost. The results of the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra tests prove that with the increase in the aging–regeneration cycles of SMB, the intensity of FTIR peaks of oxygen-containing functional groups is greater, and the recovery of aged SMB is gradually weakened. Lubrication by hydrogels is an emerging area in surface science. Although oil‐driven friction reduction is predominant in literature, emulsion gel‐based lubrication has attracted very little attention to date. We hypothesize that an interplay of viscoelasticity and oil volume fraction may modulate the lubricity of emulsion‐filled gels. Herein, phase‐change gelatin‐based emulsion‐filled gels with different sugar alcohols and oil droplet concentrations (0–30 wt%) are tested for their lubrication performance. The rheological and tribological tests are analyzed in conjunction with spectroscopic and structural characterizations to reveal structure–function relationship. Structural characterizations demonstrate that hydrogen bonding is enhanced in pure gelatin gels with the increase of sugar alcohol (glycerol)‐replacement time, which enhance the storage modulus (G′) of the gel networks. Emulsified droplets serve as active fillers further strengthening the G′ and strikingly the presence of glycerol reduced the thermoresponsiveness of the emulsion‐filled gels. Emulsion‐filled gels containing sugar alcohols, irrespective of their type, can greatly reduce the friction coefficients (μ) between hydrophobic surfaces in the boundary and mixed regimes versus the systems without sugar alcohols. Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics and computational rheology widely exploit elastic dumbbell models such as Oldroyd-B and FENE-P for a continuum description of viscoelastic fluid flows. However, these constitutive equations fail to accurately capture some characteristics of realistic polymers, such as the steady extension in simple shear and extensional flows, thus questioning the ability of continuum-level modeling to predict the hydrodynamic behavior of viscoelastic fluids in more complex flows. Here, we present seven elastic dumbbell models, which include different microstructurally inspired terms, i.e., (i) the finite polymer extensibility, (ii) the conformation-dependent friction coefficient, and (iii) the conformation-dependent non-affine deformation. We provide the expressions for the steady dumbbell extension in shear and extensional flows and the corresponding viscosities for various elastic dumbbell models incorporating different microscopic features. We show the necessity of including these microscopic features in a constitutive equation to reproduce the experimentally observed polymer extension in shear and extensional flows, highlighting their potential significance in accurately modeling viscoelastic channel flow with mixed kinematics. In this study, the viscoelastic properties of porcine kidney in the upper, middle and lower poles were investigated using oscillatory shear tests. The viscoelastic properties were extracted in the form of the storage modulus and loss modulus in the frequency and time domain. Measurements were taken as a function of frequency from 0.1 Hz to 6.5 Hz at a shear strain amplitude of 0.01 and as function of strain amplitude from 0.001 to 0.1 at a frequency of 1 Hz. Measurements were also taken in the time domain in response to a step shear strain. Both the frequency and time domain data were fitted to a conventional Standard Linear Solid (SLS) model and a semi-fractional Kelvin–Voigt (SFKV) model with a comparable number of parameters. The SFKV model fitted the frequency and time domain data with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. Although the SLS model well fitted the time domain data and the storage modulus data in the frequency domain, it was not able to capture the variation in loss modulus with frequency with a correlation coefficient of 0.53. A five parameter Maxwell–Wiechert model was able to capture the frequency dependence in storage modulus and loss modulus better than the SLS model with a correlation of 0.85. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A few experiments have reported that the time development of shear stress under fast-startup shear deformations exhibits double peaks before reaching a steady state for bimodal blends of entangled linear polymers under specific conditions. To understand this phenomenon, multi-chain slip-link simulations, based on the primitive chain network model, were conducted on the literature data of a bimodal polystyrene solution. Owing to reasonable agreement between their data and our simulation results, the stress was decomposed into contributions from long- and short-chain components and decoupled into segment number, stretch, and orientation. The analysis revealed that the first and second peaks correspond to the short-chain orientation and the long-chain stretch, respectively. The results also implied that the peak positions are not affected by the mixing of short and long chains, although the intensity of the second peak depends on mixing conditions in a complicated manner. Polymer microspheres (PMs), such as polyacrylamide, have been widely applied for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), yet with environmental concerns. Here, we report a microfluid displacement technology containing a bio-based eco-friendly material, i.e., calcium alginate (CaAlg) microspheres for EOR. Two dominant mechanisms responsible for EOR over CaAlg fluid have been verified, including the microscopic oil displacement efficacy augmented by regulating capillary force (determined by the joint action of interfacial tension and wettability between different phases) and macroscopic sweep volume increment through profile control and mobility ratio reduction. This comprehensive effectiveness can be further impacted when the CaAlg microsphere is embellished ulteriorly by using appropriate amount of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS). The core flooding and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests demonstrate that CaAlg-SDS microsphere can balance the interphase property regulation (wettability alteration and IFT reduction) and rheology properties, enabling simultaneous profile control and oil displacement. Excessive introduction of SDS will have a negative impact on rheological properties, which is not favored for EOR. Our results show that the involvement of 4-mM SDS will provide the best behavior, with an EOR rate of 34.38%. This cost-effective and environmentally-friendly bio-microspherebased microfluidic displacement technology is expected to achieve "green" oil recovery in future oilfield exploitation. The effects of using a hard (artisanal) margarine (which has a higher lipidic and lower aqueous contents) and using a soft (commercial) margarine (which has a lower lipidic and higher aqueous contents), along with a casein hydrolysate, on the rheological properties of different biscuit short doughs were examined. The characteristic parameters in the linear viscoelastic range (LVER) were analysed by stress sweep at 6.3 rad/s and 25 °C. The two margarines showed similar values of strain amplitude (γmax), but the hard margarine exhibited a significantly higher firmness in the LVER, as expected. An analogous result was found for the biscuit doughs made with hard margarine and soft margarine. The addition of a casein hydrolysate (CH) to both biscuit doughs produced an increase in the loss factor, indicating a loss of the solid-like character in the dough networks. Nevertheless, a different trend in the consistency of the dough, which depended on the type of margarine, was found. While, after adding CH, the dough made with soft margarine showed a significant reduction in rigidity, the dough with hard margarine exhibited an increased firmness upon CH addition. Yield stress tests showed that CH facilitates the transition from elastic to plastic deformation at the yield point more intensely in the dough with soft margarine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aims of this work are to study the rheological behaviors of a microemulsion of Glucopone–water–hydrocarbon systems and to use a fractional model to describe several experimental results of these systems. Four different types of hydrocarbons were considered. The frequency dependent storage, G′, and loss modulus, G″, were investigated below the critical strain. The critical strain was found to decrease as the alkane chain lengths increased, while the opposite behavior was observed for zero shear viscosity, η0. Most of the microemulsions exhibited stable elastic fluid behavior (G′ > G″) below 10 rad s−1 angular frequency. For all systems, elastic modulus values were found to be greater than loss modulus in the frequency range studied, indicating more elastic behaviors. Shear-thinning behaviors were observed, and the complex viscosity decreased with an increase in hydrocarbon chain lengths. The effects of hydrocarbon types on the rheological behaviors were more profound in the dodecane systems which showed maximum values of G′ and η0. The Friedrich–Braun model was introduced and was used to describe several experimental results on Alkyl polyglocoside solutions. Fractional rheology successfully described the viscoelastic phenomena in Glucopone surfactant solutions and the comparisons between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions were found to be satisfactory. Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels are commonly used for facial dermal filling and for alternative medical aesthetic purposes. High diversity exists in commercial formulations, notably for the optimization of finished product stability, functionality, and performance. Polyvalent ingredients such as calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) or vitamin B3 (niacinamide) are notably used as bio-stimulants to improve skin quality attributes at the administration site. The aim of the present study was to perform multi-parametric characterization of two novel cross-linked dermal filler formulas (HAR-1 "Instant Refine" and HAR-3 "Maxi Lift") for elucidation of the various functional impacts of vitamin B3 incorporation. Therefore, the HAR products were firstly comparatively characterized in terms of in vitro rheology, cohesivity, injectability, and resistance to chemical or enzymatic degradation (exposition to H2O2, AAPH, hyaluronidases, or xanthine oxidase). Then, the HAR products were assessed for cytocompatibility and in vitro bio-stimulation attributes in a primary dermal fibroblast model. The results showed enhanced resilience of the cohesive HAR hydrogels as compared to JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® and VOLUMA® reference products in a controlled degradation assay panel. Furthermore, significant induction of total collagen synthesis in primary dermal fibroblast cultures was recorded for HAR-1 and HAR-3, denoting intrinsic bio-stimulatory effects comparable or superior to those of the Radiesse® and Sculptra™ reference products. Original results of high translational relevance were generated herein using robust and orthogonal experimental methodologies (hydrogel degradation, functional benchmarking) and study designs. Overall, the reported results confirmed the dual functionalization role of vitamin B3 in cross-linked HA dermal fillers, with a significant enhancement of hydrogel system stability attributes and the deployment of potent bio-stimulatory capacities. All data were statistically analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and Conover’s Multiple Comparison test at the significance level of 0.05. Results Soft lining materials had different viscoelastic properties and most of the materials showed different rheological behavior at 23, 33 and 37 °C. At the end of the test (t¹5), at all the temperatures, Sofreliner Tough M had the highest storage modulus values while Visco Gel had the highest loss Tan delta values. Conclusions There were significant changes in the rheological parameters of all the materials. Also temperature affected the initial rheological properties, and polymerization reaction of all the materials, depending on temperature increase. Clinical implications Temperature affected the initial rheological properties, and polymerization reaction of soft denture liner materials, and clinical inferences should be drawn from such studies conducted. It can be recommended to utilize viscoelastic acrylic-based temporary soft lining materials with lower storage modulus, higher tan delta value, and high viscosity in situations where pain complaint persists and tissue stress is extremely significant, provided that they are replaced often.

Dual networks formed by entangled polymer chains and wormlike surfactant micelles have attracted increasing interest in their application as thickeners in various fields since they combine the advantages of both polymer- and surfactant-based fluids. In particular, such polymer-surfactant mixtures are of great interest as novel hydraulic fracturing fluids with enhanced properties. In this study, we demonstrated the effect of the chemical composition of an uncharged polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and pH on the rheological properties and structure of its mixtures with a cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride already exploited in fracturing operations. Using a combination of several complementary techniques (rheometry, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), we showed that a small number of residual acetate groups (2–12.7 mol%) in PVA could significantly reduce the viscosity of the mixed system. This result was attributed to the incorporation of acetate groups in the corona of the micellar aggregates, decreasing the molecular packing parameter and thereby inducing the shortening of worm-like micelles. When these groups are removed by hydrolysis at a pH higher than 7, viscosity increases by five orders of magnitude due to the growth of worm-like micelles in length. Nonlinear rheology of Pickering emulsions is used to further investigate the nonlinear and unrecoverable transformation of inner structures, which is beyond the linear viscoelastic regime of tiny structural disturbances. Exploring various rheological methods plays a vital role in emulsion applications, such as simulating the macroscopic structural transformation between static and liquidlike flow states, strain overshoot, and regeneration for broken structures. According to our previous studies, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) Pickering emulsions are a typical system for investigating polymer-based emulsions with the auxiliary surfactant [didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)] for enhancing CNF absorption. To further study different rheological properties by varying CNF or DDAB contents, multiple interval thixotropic test, large amplitude oscillatory shear, and concentration-time-dependent superposition are employed to study the linear viscoelasticity and structural transformation of nonlinear range. We use nonequilibrium atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of unentangled melts of linear and star oligomer chains ( C 25 H 52 ) to study the steady-state viscoelastic response under confinement within nanoscale hematite (α − F e 2 O 3) channels. We report (i) the negative (positive) first (second) normal stress difference and (ii) the presence of viscoelastic tension at low W i. With the aim of uncovering the molecular mechanism of viscoelasticity, we link these effects to bond alignment such that absorbed chains near the surface can carry the elastic force exerted on the walls, which decays as the chains become more aligned in the flow direction. Inertial effects caused by perturbations of dynamical equilibrium during the flow of soft matter constitute a hallmark of turbulence. Such perturbations are attributable to an imbalance between energy storage and energy dissipation. During the flow of Newtonian fluids, kinetic energy can be both stored and dissipated, while the flow of viscoelastic soft matter systems, such as polymer fluids, induces the accumulation of both kinetic and elastic energies. The accumulation of elastic energy causes local stiffening of stretched polymer chains, which can destabilise the flow. Migrating multicellular systems are hugely complex and are capable of self-regulating their viscoelasticity and mechanical stress generation, as well as controlling their energy storage and energy dissipation. Since the flow perturbation of viscoelastic systems is caused by the inhomogeneous accumulation of elastic energy, rather than of kinetic energy, turbulence can occur at low Reynolds numbers. This theoretical review is focused on clarifying the role of viscoelasticity in the appearance of low-Reynolds turbulence. Three types of system are considered and compared: (1) high-Reynolds turbulent flow of Newtonian fluids, (2) low and moderate-Reynolds flow of polymer solutions, and (3) migration of epithelial collectives, discussed in terms of two model systems. Defatted chickpea flour (DCF), which is a by-product of chickpea oil extraction industry, is rich in nutrients that are beneficial to human health. In this study, the effects of temperature and DCF variation on the rheological properties, water holding capacity, freeze-thaw stability and microstructure of DCF heat induced gels were investigated. The results showed that the viscoelasticity, frequency dependence, and resistance strength of heat induced gels increased significantly with the increase of temperature and DCF variation. The degree of denaturation and water retention of heat induced gels increased significantly with increased variables within the temperature and variation windows of 75°C to 95°C and 13% to 21%. The CLSM results revealed that variations of both temperature and DCF variation could cause the proteins in the heat induced gels to aggregate gradually and to form protein aggregations. When temperature or variation exceeded certain value (85°C or 17%), the protein aggregations broke up and the protein clusters became smaller and more homogeneous. Therefore, the heat induced gels presented better water holding capacity, viscoelasticity, structural stability and gel property at a temperature of 95°C or a DCF variation of 21% within the present experimental range. We present a numerical analysis of the rheology of a suspension of red blood cells (RBCs) for different volume fractions in a wall-bounded, effectively inertialess, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) flow for a wide range of applied frequencies. The RBCs are modeled as biconcave capsules, whose membrane is an isotropic and hyperelastic material following the Skalak constitutive law. The frequency-dependent viscoelasticity in the bulk suspension is quantified by the complex viscosity, defined by the amplitude of the particle shear stress and the phase difference between the stress and shear. SAOS flow basically impedes the deformation of individual RBCs as well as the magnitude of fluid-membrane interactions, resulting in a lower specific viscosity and first and second normal stress differences than in steady shear flow. Although it is known that the RBC deformation alone is sufficient to give rise to shear-thinning, our results show that the complex viscosity weakly depends on the frequency-modulated deformations or orientations of individual RBCs but rather depends on combinations of the frequency-dependent amplitude and phase difference. A systematic analytical study of the mathematical properties of the previously constructed nonlinear model of the shear flow of thixotropic viscoelastic-plastic media, which takes into account the mutual influence of the deformation process and structure evolution, is carried out. A set of two nonlinear differential equations describing shear at a constant rate and stress relaxation was obtained. Assuming six material parameters and an (increasing) material function that control the model are arbitrary, the basic properties of the families of stress-strain curves at constant strain rates, stress relaxation curves (Part 2) and creep curves (Part 3) generated by the model, and the features of the evolution of the structuredness under these types of loading were analytically studied. The dependences of these curves on time, shear rate, stress level, initial strain and initial structuredness of material (for example, degree of physical crosslinking), as well as on material parameters and function governing the model, were studied. Several indicators of the model applicability are found, which are convenient to check with experimental data. It was examined what effects typical for viscoelastic-plastic media can be described by the model and what unusual effects (properties) are generated by structuredness changes in comparison to typical stress-strain, relaxation and creep curves of structurally stable materials. The analysis proved the ability of the model to describe behavior of not only liquid-like viscoelastoplastic media, but also solid-like (thickening, hardening, hardened) media: the effects of creep, relaxation, recovery, a number of typical properties of experimental relaxation curves, creep and stress-strain curves at a constant rate, strain rate and strain hardening, flow under constant stress, etc. The first part of the article is devoted to formulation of the model and preparation of basis for the second part: the proof of the uniqueness and stability of the equilibrium point of the nonlinear equations set, analytical study of the equilibrium point dependence on all material parameters, possible types of phase portraits and the properties of integral and phase curves of the model. The microstructure of wormlike micelles (WLM) directly affects the rheological properties of their solutions. Investigating the structure–property relationships of WLM has long been a popular topic for researchers who have developed theoretical and empirical models to describe their viscoelastic behavior. All these models rely on a collection of characteristic "length" parameters that are often difficult to estimate using relatively simple rheological tests. In particular, the micelle stiffness, as described by the persistence length, can be difficult to measure experimentally, while being very impactful on the bulk rheology of WLM solutions. Here, an array of inorganic salts (NaCl, LiCl, MgCl2, NaBr, NaI, and Na2SO4) have been used to induce wormlike micelle formation in an aqueous solution of the surfactant sodium lauryl ether sulfate. Ion dissociation/association with the surfactant head groups and the hydrogen bond network of the water alters the effective stiffness of the micelles, allowing for an estimation of the stiffness using three different methods: (1) small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements, (2) oscillatory rheological measurements, and (3) steady rheological measurements with a thermodynamic packing parameter model. Each of these methods are then compared and shown to be consistent with each other for the micelle solutions tested. The consistency of the results across all the measurements suggests that the approach used in this study, which estimates micelle parameters using steady shear rheology and a thermodynamic model, could provide a simpler and more accessible method for estimating micelle parameters in a wide range of surfactant systems. As a soluble fiber, inulin is present in many plants and has many applications in food and non-food products. In this work, we investigated the rheological properties of inulin dispersions at seven concentrations. The linear viscoelastic properties of inulin were determined using a conventional mechanical rheometer. At 25 wt%, inulin exhibited fluid-like viscoelastic liquid behavior. However, when concentrations were ≥27.5 wt%, inulin exhibited gel-like viscoelastic properties. The viscoelastic properties (moduli and viscosities) increased with increasing inulin concentration. The high-frequency linear rheological properties of inulin were also investigated using the modern light scattering technique, diffusion wave spectroscopy (DWS). The diffusion wave spectroscopy (DWS) measurements showed the amplitude of complex moduli (|G*(ω)|) of inulin gels (≥27.5 wt%) to be proportional to ½ power law of the frequency, which suggests inulin gels behave similarly to flexible polymers. The non-linear steady shear experiments demonstrated that inulin exhibited shear-thinning behavior that was well fitted by a power law constitutive model. The trend of the power law exponent from the experiments indicated that the shear-thinning extent for inulin was greater as the inulin concentration increased. The results of this work indicated that the properties of inulin gel can be manipulated by altering its concentration. Therefore, the desired inulin product can be designed accordingly. [Display omitted] Hetero-aggregation of oppositely charged colloidal particles with controlled architectural and interactional asymmetry allows modifying gel nanostructure and properties. We hypothesize the relative size ratio between cationic nanospheres and varied-size anionic two-dimensional nanoclays will influence the gel formation mechanisms and resulting rheological performance. Hybrid colloidal gels formed via hetero-aggregation of cationic gelatin nanospheres (∼400 nm diameter) and five types of nanoclays with similar 1 nm thickness but different lateral sizes ranging from ∼ 30 nm to ∼ 3000 nm. Structure-property relationships were elucidated using a suite of techniques. Microscopy and scattering probed gel nanostructure and particle configuration. Rheology quantified linear and non-linear viscoelastic properties and yielding behavior. Birefringence and polarized imaging assessed size-dependent nanoclay alignment during shear flow. Nanoclay size ratio relative to nanospheres affected the gelation process, network structure, elasticity, yielding, and shear response. Gels with comparably sized components showed maximum elasticity, while yield stress depended on nanoclay rotational mobility. Shear-induced nanoclay alignment was quantified by birefringence, which is more pronounced for larger nanoclay. Varying nanoclay size and interactions with nanospheres controlled dispersion, aggregation, and nematic ordering. The finitely extensible nonlinear elastic with Peterlin closure (FENE-P) and simplified Phan-Thien–Tanner (sPTT) viscoelastic models are used widely for modelling of complex fluids. Although they are derived from distinct micro-structural theories, these models can become mathematically identical in steady and homogeneous flows with a particular choice of the values of the model parameters. However, even with this choice of parameter values, the model responses are known to differ from each other in transient flows. In this work, we investigate the responses of the FENE-P and sPTT constitutive models in large-amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS). In steady shear, the shear stress scales with the non-dimensional group Wi/(aL) (Wi √) for the FENE-P (sPTT) model, where Wi is the Weissenberg number, L² is the limit of extensibility in the FENE-P model (a being L²/(L² − 3)), and is the extensibility parameter in the sPTT model. Our numerical and analytical results show that in LAOS, the FENE-P model shows this universality only for large values of L², whereas the sPTT model shows it for all values of . In the strongly nonlinear region, there is a drastic difference between the responses of the two models, with the FENE-P model exhibiting strong shear stress overshoots that manifest as self-intersecting secondary loops in the viscous Lissajous curves. We quantify the nonlinearity exhibited by each constitutive model using the sequence of physical processes framework. Despite the high degree of nonlinearity exhibited by the FENE-P model, we also show using fully nonlinear one-dimensional simulations that it does not shear band in LAOS within the range of conditions studied. Carbohydrate polymers have broad application prospects, especially in food and cosmetic fields, and rheology is very important for controlling the quality and functions of their final products. Therefore, the steady and transient rheological behaviors of polysaccharides with different chain conformations of triple helix, double helix, and random coils were studied systematically. In our findings, the extraordinary low‐shear thickening phenomena of polysaccharides (lentinan, curdlan, and xanthan) with helix conformation were observed at a certain concentration depending on the stiffness and molecular weight, different from the steady‐shear rheological property of pullulan, which was attributable to the arrangement from order to disorder of stiff chains at the shear rate of < 0.1 s−1. Lentinan, curdlan, and xanthan in solution showed obvious viscoelasticity and thixotropic behavior with significant concentration and stiffness dependence, while the flexible pullulan only exhibited Newtonian viscous fluid even at high concentration of 20%. Stress overshoot for the four polysaccharides occurred after shearing, and the higher stiffness and molecular weight delayed the occurrence of stress overshoot. Obviously, chain conformation plays a key role on controlling the rheology of polysaccharides. Third-degree burn injuries pose a significant health threat. Safer, easier-to-use, and more effective techniques are urgently needed for their treatment. We hypothesized that covalently bonded conjugates of fatty acids and tripeptides can form wound-compatible hydrogels that can accelerate healing. We first designed conjugated structures as fatty acid–aminoacid1–amonoacid2–aspartate amphiphiles (Cn acid–AA1–AA2–D), which were potentially capable of self-assembling into hydrogels according to the structure and properties of each moiety. We then generated 14 novel conjugates based on this design by using two Fmoc/tBu solid-phase peptide synthesis techniques; we verified their structures and purities through liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Of them, 13 conjugates formed hydrogels at low concentrations (≥0.25% w/v), but C8 acid-ILD-NH2 showed the best hydrogelation and was investigated further. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that C8 acid-ILD-NH2 formed fibrous network structures and rapidly formed hydrogels that were stable in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 2–8, 37 °C), a typical pathophysiological condition. Injection and rheological studies revealed that the hydrogels manifested important wound treatment properties, including injectability, shear thinning, rapid re-gelation, and wound-compatible mechanics (e.g., moduli G″ and G′, ~0.5–15 kPa). The C8 acid-ILD-NH2(2) hydrogel markedly accelerated the healing of third-degree burn wounds on C57BL/6J mice. Taken together, our findings demonstrated the potential of the Cn fatty acid–AA1–AA2–D molecular template to form hydrogels capable of promoting the wound healing of third-degree burns. Some non-Newtonian fluids have time-dependent rheological properties like a shear stress that depends on the shear history or a stress overshoot that is a function of the resting time, when fluid movement is started. The rheological properties of such complex fluids may not stay constant while they are used in an industrial process, and it is therefore desirable to measure these properties frequently and with a simple and robust device like a pipe rheometer. This paper investigated how the time-dependent rheological properties of a thixotropic and viscoelastic shear-thinning fluid can be extracted from differential pressure measurements obtained at different flowrates along a circular pipe section. The method consists in modeling the flow of a thixotropic version of a Quemada fluid and solving the inverse problem in order to find the model parameters using the measurements made in steady-state conditions. Also, a Maxwell linear viscoelastic model was used to reproduce the stress overshoot observed when starting circulation after a resting period. The pipe rheometer was designed to have the proper features necessary to exhibit the thixotropic and viscoelastic effects that were needed to calibrate the rheological model parameters. The accuracy of rheological measurements depends on understanding the effects that can influence the observations and on a proper design that takes advantage of these side effects instead of attempting to eliminate them. Electrothermal pumping is a recently trending method to force highly conductive fluids in a wide range of microfluidics applications with biological processes. Although most polymer fluids (biological and synthetic) are highly conductive exhibiting viscoelastic rheological properties that are relevant to biomedical applications, their behavior under the effect of electrothermal force has not yet been studied. To this aim, the PTT model (non-linear rheological constitutive equation) and electrothermal equations are implemented in the developed OpenFOAM solver. The effect of rheological characteristics of the fluids on the physical parameters such as velocity, elastic behavior, and vortices strength of electrothermal flow are investigated through the viscoelastic non-dimensional numbers. According to the results, electrothermal outlet velocity decreases by 726% as the retardation ratio (β number) increases from 0.2 to 0.9 and increases by 107% as the Weissenberg number raises from 0.001 to 10. Investigating all non-dimensional numbers simultaneously leads to the conclusion that higher electrothermal velocity is achieved by viscoelastic fluids with lower viscosity and higher relaxation time. This fact is useful for choosing the proper fluid for a particular application. As a practical example, 3000 ppm polyethylene oxide solution results in higher velocity in electrothermal flow compared to the 5% polyvinylpyrrolidone and 2000 ppm xanthan gum solution. Yam (Dioscorea. sp.) is an edible starchy tuber with potential for being a commercial source of starch for industrial purposes, but yam starch is underutilized. The dynamic oscillatory and thermal properties of yam starches from sixteen varieties each of Dioscorea. rotundata, Dioscora. alata, Dioscorea. bulbifera and one variety of Dioscorea. dumetorum from Nigeria were studied to determine their potential for industrial utilization. The storage modulus, loss modulus, damping factor and complex viscosity as a function of frequency (ω) of the dioscorea gels, as well as the onset temperature (To), peak gelatinization temperature (Tp), end of gelatinization (TC), and gelatinization enthalpy of the starches were determined by standard procedures. Results showed that all the dioscorea starches showed a typical elastic behavior with the magnitude of G′ greater than G″ while tan δ < 1 in all varieties. Thus, the starch gels were more elastic than viscous. All the starch gels exhibited shear thinning characteristics and showed frequency (ω) independence characteristics of weak gels. D. rotundata varieties had the lowest ∆Hgel, while D. bulbifera varieties had the highest. The diversity of the visco-elastic and thermal properties of the yam starch gels from different varieties and species can be an advantage in their utilization in both food and non-food industries. In the last decade, hydrogels for hydraulic fracturing based on viscoelastic surfactants have been actively studied. Interest in these systems is justified by their unique qualities: good viscoelasticity and the ability to form stable suspensions of proppant or sand, destruction without the formation of bridging agents, hydrophobization of the rock surface and metal of technological equipment, as well as oil-cleaning properties. These qualities are most often provided by a minimum set of components—a surfactant and an electrolyte. However, the absence of a polymer limits the use of these gels in formations where fluid leakoff is possible. In this article, a liquid was studied, based on a pseudo gemini surfactant (PGVES) with the addition of a water-soluble polysaccharide. The objects of study were selected based on the assumption of interactions between PGVES and the polymer; interactions which favorably influence the technological characteristics of the fracturing fluid. To confirm the hypothesis, rheological studies were carried out. These included rotational viscometry and oscillatory studies at various temperatures. The settling velocity of particles of various proppant fractions was studied and tests were carried out to assess fluid leakoff. The performed experiments show an improvement in the characteristics of the PGVES-based gel under the influence of the polysaccharide. In particular, the rheological properties increase significantly, the stability of proppant suspensions improves, and the fluid leakoff of systems decreases, all of which expands the possibility of using these fracturing fluids and makes this area of experimentation promising.
