This special issue aims to help fill two critical gaps in the growing literature as well as in practice. First, to bring together scholars and practitioners from around the world who develop, practice, review, and question structural competency with the aim of promoting a dialogue with related approaches, such as Latin American Social Medicine, Collective Health, and others, which have been key in diverse geographical and social settings. Second, to contribute to expanding structural competency beyond clinical medicine to include other health-related areas such as social work, global health, public health practice, epidemiological research, health policy, community organisation and beyond. This conceptual expansion is currently taking place in structural competency, and we hope that this volume will help to raise awareness and reinforce what is already happening. In sum, this collection of articles puts structural competency more rigorously and actively in conversation with different geographic, political, social, and professional contexts worldwide. The article focuses on the Public Health Reports (PHR): Year in Review article series. Topics discussed include 2022 performance metrics of PHR, assessment of the journal's state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) authorship in 2022, and topics of PHR articles published in 2022 which includes infectious diseases, health disparities and the health of racial and ethnic minority and other socially or economically disadvantaged populations.

The article, published in the June 2023 issue of the Quarterly, covers various topics related to population health. Topics include the need for improvements in monitoring child and adolescent mental health indicators, the impact of hospital system mergers on healthcare outcomes, the financing and ownership trends in the American healthcare system, and the strategic messaging to promote policies that advance racial equity.

Objective: Public Health Reports (PHR) is the oldest public health journal in the United States and has reported on viral epidemics since the 19th century. We describe the creation and analysis of a collection of historic PHR articles on emerging viral epidemics in the United States to inform public health response to COVID-19 and future epidemics. Methods: We searched databases from 1878 through 2021 using custom search strings and conducted a manual search for articles published under previously used names for PHR. We evaluated all articles based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and coded the final list for virus/disease, article type, public health emergency preparedness and response capabilities from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and PubMed citation count. Results: We identified 349 relevant articles including 130 commentaries/reviews/editorials, 79 epidemiologic reports, 75 research articles, and 65 case study/practice articles. The collection focused on influenza (n = 244), COVID-19 (n = 75), dengue (n = 14), and other emerging viruses, such as Zika and Ebola (n = 25). The collection included 48 articles on health disparities/health of various disadvantaged populations, highlighting such disparities as race and ethnicity (n = 22), socioeconomic status (n = 17), and age (n = 15). When we categorized articles by CDC public health emergency preparedness and response capabilities, we found that 207 addressed surveillance and epidemiologic investigation, 36 addressed community preparedness, and 28 addressed medical countermeasure dispensing and administration. The articles addressing surveillance and epidemiologic investigation, nonpharmaceutical interventions, and community preparedness had the most PubMed citations (799, 334, and 308, respectively). Conclusions: PHR 's historic articles on US emerging viral epidemics covered a range of virus/disease types, emergency preparedness and response capabilities, and contribution types and were widely cited in the scholarly literature. These include the role of primary health care in reducing inequalities and improving life expectancy, understanding care trajectories in the elderly for end-of-life care, the issue of general practices closing their books and its impact on patient access to primary care, sexual health surveillance and contact tracing for sexually transmitted infections.

The authors discuss some significant events on issues related to health and human rights from 1994 to 2019. Topics mentioned include modern human rights and health movement started by World Health Organization official Jonathan Mann, adoption of General Comment 14 in 2000 by the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the integration of human rights frameworks in medicine and public health.

An editorial is presented on how George Floyd and COVID-19 are highlighting structural inequities for vulnerable women, children and adolescents. The article discusses that the conviction of Derek Chauvin for killing George Floyd and the disproportionate health and economic impact that COVID-19 is having on vulnerable groups; and research has shown that inequalities due to race and ethnicity are a fundamental cause of poor health outcomes.

The author discusses the challenges for prevention research that need to be addressed in order to achieve an effective health policy. Topics mentioned include the development of innovative actions aimed at modifying the environment in which the research is conducted and the importance of the integration between decision-makers and practitioners.
