Integrating more active components into a catalyst material could facilitate the development of multifunctional electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications. In this study, we developed a multifunctional electrocatalyst, namely, Pd alloyed with Co-Fe deposited on N-doped mesoporous carbon derived from tissue paper (Pd@Co-Fe/N-TDC). The synergism in Pd@Co-Fe/N-TDC, stemming from the interatomic alloy between Pd and Co-Fe, N-doped mesoporous carbon with defective surfaces, distribution of polyhedral Pd nanoparticles, and strong metal-support interfacial interaction, resulted in significantly high electrocatalytic performance for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Pd@Co-Fe/N-TDC was found to be an efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, and this was evidenced by a high onset potential (1.01 V) and kinetic current density (2.6 mA/cm2) for the ORR and by a low overpotential (296 mV) and a low Tafel slope value (38 mV/dec) for the OER, along with a small Δ E of 736 mV. The catalyst also exhibited high durability for both ORR and OER, even after 10000 and 5000 cycles, respectively. Theoretical assessment provides an insight into the synergism of active metal sites in Pd@Co-Fe/N-TDC, which showed its potential for use as a non-Pt electrocatalyst for energy applications. The objective of this study is to identify and review the literature in activating flux, and different type of welding techniques. For that purpose, a structured review method is adopted and the Scopus database is used as a primary source for the selection of papers. The papers were identified using the string term of “Activating flux” OR “Activated flux” in the title of papers. And a total of 238 papers were identified for the study. Besides the above few other papers were also reviewed and the materials used, the type of flux used, and the findings of different combinations were highlighted in the form of tables. The findings of the study provide a comprehensive understanding of the different type of welding techniques focusing on TIG welding, and the different combination of flux used and their impact was summarized.

A Ru-Ni@Cu alloy catalyst with a well-connected two-phase or three-phase contact interface is fabricated as an alternative to a Pt-based catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis in this study. For optimum bonding and adhesion stability, the alloy particles are grown directly on carbon paper (CP) by the hydrothermal method. The alloy particles are composed of central Cu cores, Ni nests wrapped around Cu core, and small (2.0 nm) Ru nanoparticles embedded at the Ni nests. The Ni surface readily adsorbs water, the high conductivity of Cu increases the electron density of the electrode surface to facilitate water splitting, and the Ru surface adsorbs more H+ ions, thus promoting hydrogen production in the Ru-Ni@Cu alloy. Eventually, despite the use of only 1.0 wt% Ru, the 1% Ru-Ni@Cu/CP electrode exhibits a low overpotential of −0.15 V (η = 246 mV and 87.08 mV dec−1) at 100 mA cm−2 in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, similarly to the −0.1 V overpotential of the 100% Pt/CP electrode. The electrode maintains excellent catalytic activity without deterioration for 10 days with a Faraday efficiency of 96.89% (50 h) HER and 3000th LSV cycles. This response mainly deals with the scientific description of the comments on the structure of the published compound (Bi 1/2 K 1/2)(Fe 1/2 W 1/2)O 3. The newly designed (Bi 1/2 K 1/2)(Fe 1/2 W 1/2)O 3 compound was prepared using the solid-state reaction method. The ingredients were taken to satisfy the required stoichiometry/chemical composition to form a single-phase compound. The lattice parameters and structure is strongly affected by K and W doped elements. Traditional bending products are usually divided into two steps: extrusion and bending. Staggered extrusion (SE) as a new process was proposed to prepare Mg alloy bending products in this paper. By designing the structure at one end of the stem, the dual functions of extrusion process and bending process can be realized in a single extrusion pass. The results of the present study show that by adjusting the degree of deformation of the AZ31 Mg alloy, a bending product with a specific curvature could be obtained by the SE process, and the microstructure of the bending product was refined. When the extrusion ratio was increased from 11.11 to 44.44, the grain size was refined from 23.89 to 9.69 μm, and the percentage of recrystallized structures increased from 61.1 to 78.8%. Moreover, the type of unit cell is not correct. Due to the double doping the new type of unit cell, previously unknown, was proposed for such crystals. The porous and self-supported FeNi-alloy fiber paper is successfully fabricated. Under OER conditions, the Fe atoms leach out the surface of FeNi-alloy, resulting in facilitating surface reconstruction to generate the active FeNi-oxyhydroxide. High-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are urgently desired to improve the overall efficiency of electrochemical water splitting. Here, a porous and self-supported FeNi-alloy fiber paper is successfully fabricated to achieve excellent OER performance with an ultralow overpotential, as well as remarkable stability. It is demonstrated that Fe substitution into metallic nickel can enable the inactive metallic nickel to endow highly electrocatalytic activity. In this work, we developed and fabricated a paper-based anisotropic magneto-resistive sensor using a sputtered permalloy (Ni 81 Fe 19 ) thin film. To interpret the characteristics of the sensor, we proposed a computational model to capture the influence of the stochastic fiber network of the paper surface and to explain the physics behind the empirically observed difference in paper-based anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR). Using the model, we verified two main empirical observations: (1) The stochastic fiber network of the paper substrate induces a shift of 45 ∘ in the AMR response of the paper-based Ni 81 Fe 19 thin film compared to a Ni 81 Fe 19 film on a smooth surface as long as the fibrous topography has not become buried. (2) The ratio of magnitudes of AMR peaks at different anisotropy angles and the inverted AMR peak at the 90 ∘ -anisotropy angle are explained through the superposition of the responses of Ni 81 Fe 19 inheriting the fibrous topography and smoother Ni 81 Fe 19 on buried fibrous topographies. As for the sensitivity and reproducibility of the sensor signal, we obtained a maximum AMR peak of 0.4 % , min-max sensitivity range of [ 0.17 , 0.26 ] % , average asymmetry of peak location of 2.7 kA m within two consecutive magnetic loading cycles, and a deviation of 250–850 A m of peak location across several anisotropy angles at a base resistance of ∼100 Ω. The study presented in this paper was undertaken in response to two instances of unexpected blade breakage in the cutting blade used in a Carton Wrap machine (CW). Failure of the Al7075 alloy blade occurred at an indentation during typical operational loading conditions. Subsequent metallographic examinations of the fractured samples confirmed that both cases were attributed to fatigue failure. The main objective of this study is to investigate potential causes of fatigue failure in the CW blade using simplified linear elastic static numerical simulations through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In this research, we employed the well-established Theory of Critical Distance (TCD), and this case study provided a contextualization at an industrial level. Furthermore, the analysis focused on a second key aspect: proposing a new blade geometry aimed at mitigating the identified issues and eliminating possible causes of failure. In this context, the actual stress concentration at the indentation was determined using the TCD with Line Method (LM). The results from the numerical simulations indicated that the new blade geometry significantly reduced stress concentration, resulting in a risk factor reduction of approximately four compared to the original blade design, even under non-optimal operating conditions. Overall, in conjunction with simple linear static FEA, the proposed numerical approach provided substantial support for designers, especially in fault analysis and when comparing different industrial solutions. The monitoring of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological system has been occupying research hotspots recently, since the biochemical alterations caused by the overproduction of ROS are the main incentives of diseases and accelerated aging process. In this work, we proposed an effective and simple strategy for the construction of high-performance ROS electrochemical sensor. Noble metal alloy nanoparticles (AuPt nanoparticles) with high catalytic activity were spontaneously coated on the freestanding metallic molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2) paper independent of any auxiliary conditions. Results have found that the abundant defects and electrons distributed on the metallic MoS 2 paper could provide active sites for the nucleation and growth of noble metal nanoparticles. Besides, the excellent mechanical properties of the MoS 2 paper promote the formation of flexible sensors. The fabricated MoS 2 paper-based sensor was demonstrated to detect ROS with the advantages of wide linear range, prominent selectivity and flexibility, satisfactory detection stability, as well as simple and convenient preparation process. [Display omitted] Li-rich dual-phase Li-Cu alloy is a promising candidate toward practical application of Li metal anode due to its in situ formed unique three-dimensional (3D) skeleton of electrochemical inert LiCu x solid-solution phase. Since a thin layer of metallic Li phase appears on the surface of as-prepared Li-Cu alloy, the LiCu x framework cannot regulate Li deposition efficiently in the first Li plating process. Herein, a lithiophilic LiC 6 headspace is capped on the upper surface of the Li-Cu alloy, which can not only offer free space to accommodate Li deposition and maintain dimensional stability of the anode, but also provide abundant lithiophilic sites and guide Li deposition effectively. This unique bilayer architecture is fabricated via a facile thermal infiltration method, where the Li-Cu alloy layer with an ultrathin thickness around 40 μm occupies the bottom of a carbon paper (CP) sheet, and the upper part of this 3D porous framework is reserved as the headspace for Li storage. Notably, the molten Li can quickly convert these carbon fibers of the CP into lithiophilic LiC 6 fibers while the CP is touched with the liquid Li. The synergetic effect between the LiC 6 fibers framework and LiCu x nanowires scaffold can ensure a uniform local electric field and stable Li metal deposition during cycling. Featured Application: This study shows the validation of an effective methodology for determining the residual stresses of components obtained with a 3D-printed polymer such as PLA based on the DIC and the hole-drilling method. The hole-drilling method (HDM) is a common technique used for the determination of residual stresses, especially for metal alloy components, though also for polymers. This technique is usually implemented with strain gages, though other methods for determining the fields of displacements are quite mature, such as the use of digital image correlation (DIC). In the present paper, this combined methodology is applied to a 3D-printed PLA precurved specimen that is flattened in order to impose a bending distribution which can be considered known with a reasonable accuracy. The back-calculated stress distribution is in agreement with the expected (imposed) bending stress, however, a converging iterative procedure for obtaining the solution is introduced and discussed in the paper. Conventional book casting of Sm2TM17-type alloys (where TM = Co, Fe, Cu, Zr) leads to a coarse, highly segregated microstructure, predominantly due to the slow, variable cooling rate from the mould surface towards the centre of the ingot. These cast alloys require a long homogenisation treatment to remove this segregation and develop a super-saturated, metastable SmTM7-type hexagonal phase. This SmTM7 phase is a vital precursor phase required during magnet production to develop the complex cellular structure responsible for high magnetic properties. In this work, strip casting was employed to facilitate rapid solidification to develop thin flakes (<0.5 mm thick) with a columnar grain structure. Rapid cooling has the potential to produce a homogenous microstructure consisting predominantly of the metastable SmTM7 phase. This could remove or significantly reduce the need for the energy-intensive homogenisation treatment usually required in conventional magnet manufacture. This paper investigates the effect of wheel speed (and hence cooling rate) on flake thickness, microstructure, and phase balance of the cast alloys. It was shown that for wheel speeds between 1.1 and 3.0 m/s, the microstructure showed large variation; however, in all cases, evidence of the columnar SmTM7 phase was presented. The adhesion between the melt and the wheel was deemed to be critical for the nucleation and subsequent columnar growth of SmTM7 grains, where the wheel speed controlled both the flow of the alloy onto the wheel and the thickness of the resultant flake. It was determined that in order to achieve a homogenous columnar SmTM7 structure, the maximum flake thickness should be limited to 270 μm to avoid the formation of equiaxed Sm2TM17 grains through insufficient cooling. Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys were favored by biomedical practitioners thanks to availability of bioactivity and degradability. However, the mismatch between the degradation properties of Mg alloys and the rate of osteogenesis often led to implant failure and bacterial infections within the desired period. The goal of this study was to improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys, providing theoretical guidance for solving the problems of implantable Mg-based materials. In this experiment, we prepared a dense and uniform BTESPT/TiO 2 film layer on the surface of Mg substrate by electrochemically assisted deposition. The BTESPT/TiO 2 film layer provided a physical barrier to avoid direct contact between AZ31 and the corrosive medium. When the addition amount was 2 g/L TiO 2 , the coating had the best corrosion resistance behavior, its corrosion current density could be up to 9.973×10 -8 A/cm 2 . Metallic biomaterials, such as stainless steels, cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloys, and titanium (Ti) alloys, have long been used as load-bearing implant materials due to their metallic mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. However, their magnetic susceptibility and elastic modulus of more than 100 GPa significantly restrict their therapeutic applicability. In this study, spinodal Zr 60 Nb 40 , Zr 50 Nb 50 , and Zr 40 Nb 60 (at.%) alloys were selected from the miscibility gap based on the Zr-Nb binary phase diagram and prepared by casting, cold rolling, and aging. Their microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, magnetic susceptibility, and biocompatibility were systematically evaluated. Spinodal decomposition to alternating nanoscale Zr-rich β 1 and Nb-rich β 2 phases occurred in the cold-rolled Zr-Nb alloys during aging treatment at 650 °C. In addition, a minor amount of α phase was precipitated in Zr 60 Nb 40 due to the thermodynamic instability of the Zr-rich β 1 phase. Spinodal decomposition significantly improved the mechanical strength of the alloys due to nanosized dual-cubic reinforcement. The Zr-Nb alloys showed an electrochemical corrosion rate of 94-262 nm per year in Hanks' solution because of formation of dense passive films composed of ZrO 2 and Nb 2 O 5 during the polarization process. The magnetic susceptibilities of the Zr-Nb alloys were significantly lower than those of commercial Co-Cr-Mo and Ti alloys. The cell viability of the Zr-Nb alloys was more than 98 % toward MC3T3-E1 cells. Overall, the spinodal Zr-Nb alloys have enormous potential as bone-implant materials due to their outstanding overall mechanical properties, extraordinary corrosion resistance, low magnetic susceptibility, and sufficient bicompatibility. High entropy alloy nanoparticles are envisaged as one of the most interesting materials compared to monoatomic materials due to their modulated properties in terms of their convenient surface-to-volume ratio. However, studies are still missing to unveil how composition or nanoparticle size can influence nanoparticle morphology. Based on molecular dynamics simulations, we perform a structural characterization as a function of nanoparticle size and the chemical composition of high entropy alloy nanoparticles subject to multiple annealing cycles. After the multiple thermal loads, we observe a substantial migration of copper atoms towards the np surface, consistent with the experimental results of Cu-based high entropy alloys. The resulting high entropy alloy nanoparticle behaves as a core-shell nanostructure with a rich fcc phase on the surface (50% of Cu) and 5% fcc phase in the nanoparticle core. Inspecting the nanoparticle surface, it is observed that high entropy alloy nanoparticles have a lack of surface facets, leading to a more spherical shape, quite different from mono-metallic nanoparticles with a high number of facets. Performing an average atoms simulation, it showed that nanoparticles are prone to form 111 surface facets independent of the nanoparticle size, suggesting that for high entropy alloy nanoparticles, the chemical complexity avoids the formation of surface facets. The latter can be explained in terms of the lattice distortion inducing tensile/compressive stress that drives the surface reconstruction. All in all our results match extremely well with experimental evidence of FeNiCrCoCu nanocrystalline materials, explaining the Cu segregation in terms of surface energy and mixing enthalpy criteria. We believe that our results provide a detailed characterization of high entropy nanoparticles focusing on how chemical complexity induces morphological changes compared to mono-crystalline nanoparticles. Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloys have recently emerged as promising porous bone-substituting materials, due to their moderate degradation rates, good biocompatibility, geometrically ordered microarchitectures, and bone-mimicking mechanical properties. While AM Zn alloy porous scaffolds mimicking the mechanical properties of trabecular bone have been previously reported, mimicking the mechanical properties of cortical bone remains a formidable challenge. To overcome this challenge, we developed the AM Zn-3Mg alloy. We used laser powder bed fusion to process Zn-3Mg and compared it with pure Zn. The AM Zn-3Mg alloy exhibited significantly refined grains and a unique microstructure with interlaced α-Zn/Mg 2 Zn 11 phases. The compressive properties of the solid Zn-3Mg specimens greatly exceeded their tensile properties, with a compressive yield strength of up to 601 MPa and an ultimate strain of >60 %. We then designed and fabricated functionally graded porous structures with a solid core and achieved cortical bone-mimicking mechanical properties, including a compressive yield strength of >120 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≈20 GPa. The biodegradation rates of the Zn-3Mg specimens were lower than those of pure Zn and could be adjusted by tuning the AM process parameters. The Zn-3Mg specimens also exhibited improved biocompatibility as compared to pure Zn, including higher metabolic activity and enhanced osteogenic behavior of MC3T3 cells cultured with the extracts from the Zn-3Mg alloy specimens. Altogether, these results marked major progress in developing AM porous biodegradable metallic bone substitutes, which paved the way toward clinical adoption of Zn-based scaffolds for the treatment of load-bearing bony defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our study presents a significant advancement in the realm of biodegradable metallic bone substitutes through the development of an additively manufactured Zn-3Mg alloy. This novel alloy showcases refined grains and a distinctive microstructure, enabling the fabrication of functionally graded porous structures with mechanical properties resembling cortical bone. The achieved compressive yield strength and elastic modulus signify a critical leap toward mimicking the mechanical behavior of load-bearing bone. The limited mechanical properties of pure Zn, such as its low strength and ductility, hinder its application as a material for biodegradable implants. Addressing this challenge, the current study focuses on the development of biodegradable Zn-based alloys, employing innovative alloy design and processing strategies. Here, alloys with compositions ranging from 0.02 to 0.10 weight percent (wt%) Cu, 1.22 to 1.80 wt% Ti, and 0.04 to 0.06 wt% Mo were produced utilizing a high-throughput gradient continuous casting process. This study highlights three specific alloys: Zn 1.82 Cu 0.10 Ti 0.05 Mo (HR8), Zn 0.08 Cu 1.86 Ti 0 Mo (HR7), and Zn 1.26 Cu 0.13 Ti 0.06 Mo (HR6), which were extensively evaluated for their microstructure, mechanical properties, electrochemical performance, potential as bioimplants, and cytotoxicity. These alloys were found to exhibit enhanced mechanical strength, optimal degradation rates, and superior biocompatibility, evidenced by in-vivo experiments with SD rats, positioning them as promising candidates for medical implants. This research not only introduces a significant advancement in biodegradable alloy development but also proposes an efficient method for their production, marking a pivotal step forward in biomedical engineering. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The limited mechanical properties of pure Zn have hindered its application in biodegradable implants. Our research primarily focuses on the alloy design and process strategies of biodegradable Zn-based alloys. We explore the ZnCu x Ti x Mo x alloys. This study introduces a high-throughput experimental approach for efficient screening of multi-component alloy systems with optimal properties. The ZnCu x TixMo x alloys were designed and processed through gradient continuous casting, followed by homogenization and hot rolling. Our findings indicate that the Zn 1.82 Cu 0.10 Ti 0.05 Mo alloy demonstrates superior tensile, mechanical, and corrosion properties post hot rolling. The three-dimensional-printed Ti6Al4V implant (3DTi) has been widely accepted for the reconstruction of massive bone defects in orthopedics owing to several advantages, such as its tailored shape design, avoiding bone graft and superior bone-implant interlock. However, the osteoinduction activity of 3DTi is inadequate when applied clinically even though it exhibits osteoconduction. This study developes a comprehensive coatless strategy for the surface improvement of 3DTi through copper (Cu) ion implantation and ultraviolet (UV) photofunctionalization to enhance osteoinductivity. The newly constructed functional 3DTi (UV/Ti-Cu) achieved stable and controllable Cu doping, sustained Cu 2+ releasing, and increased surface hydrophilicity. By performing cellular experiments, we determined that the safe dose range of Cu ion implantation was less than 5×10 16 ions/cm 2 . The implanted Cu 2+ enhanced the ALP activity and the apatite formation ability of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) while slightly decreasing proliferation ability. When combined with UV photofunctionalization, cell adhesion and proliferation were significantly promoted and bone mineralization was further increased. Meanwhile, UV/Ti-Cu was conducive to the migration and angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vitro, theoretically facilitating vascular coupling osteogenesis. In conclusion, UV/Ti-Cu is a novel attempt to apply two coatless techniques for the surface modification of 3DTi. Two industrial solid wastes, Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (TBFS) and diamond wire saw silicon waste (DWSSW), contain large amounts of Ti and Si, and their accumulation wastes resources and intensifies environmental pollution. In the present study, DWSSW was used as the silicon source to reduce titanium oxide in TBFS by electromagnetic induction smelting, and meanwhile Na 3 AlF 6 was added as a flux to improve the recycling of the wastes. Ti and Si of the two wastes were simultaneously recovered in the form of alloy. The effects of different addition amount of Na 3 AlF 6 flux in the mixture of DWSSW and TBFS on chemical composition, viscosity, basicity and structure of slag were investigated. The dissolution behavior of SiO 2 in Na 3 AlF 6 flux was theoretically deduced and experimentally verification. Medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) typically exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, but their high Young's modulus results in restricted clinical applications. Mismatched Young's modulus between implant materials and human bones can lead to "stress shielding" effects, leading to implant failure. In contrast, β-Ti alloys demonstrate a lower Young's modulus compared to MEAs, albeit with lower strength. In the present study, based on the bimodal grain size distribution (BGSD) strategy, a series of high-performance TiZrNbTa/Ti composites are obtained by combining TiZrNbTa MEA powders with nano-scale grain sizes and commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) powders with micro-scale grain sizes. Concurrently, Zr, Nb, and Ta that are β-Ti stabilizer elements diffuse into Ti, inducing an isomorphous transformation in Ti from the high Young's modulus α-Ti phase to the low Young's modulus β-Ti phase at room temperature, optimizing the mechanical biocompatibility. The TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite demonstrates a yield strength of 1490 ± 83 MPa, ductility of 20.7 % ± 2.9 %, and Young's modulus of 87.6 ± 1.6 GPa. Notably, the yield strength of the TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite surpasses that of sintered CP-Ti by 2.6-fold, and its ductility outperforms TiZrNbTa MEA by 2.3-fold. The Young's modulus of the TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite is reduced by 28 % and 36 % compared to sintered CP-Ti and TiZrNbTa MEA, respectively. Additionally, it demonstrates superior biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti plate, sintered CP-Ti, and TiZrNbTa MEA. With a good combination of mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite exhibits significant potential for clinical applications as metallic biomaterials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work combines TiZrNbTa MEA with nano-grains and commercially pure Ti with micro-grains to fabricate a TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite with bimodal grain-size, which achieves a yield strength of 1490 ± 83 MPa and a ductility of 20.7 % ± 2.9 %. Adhering to the ISO 10993-5 standard, the TiZrNbTa/β-Ti composite qualifies as a non-cytotoxic material, achieving a Class 0 cytotoxicity rating and demonstrating outstanding biocompatibility akin to commercially pure Ti. Drawing on element diffusion, Zr, Nb, and Ta serve not only as solvent atoms to achieve solid-solution strengthening but also as stabilizers for the transformation of the β-Ti crystal structure.
