In order to explore the methods of recycling waste paper, reduce environment pollution, and develop a circular economy, the application of waste corrugated paper to the strengthening of polylactic acid (PLA) was studied. Plant fiber from waste corrugated paper (WCPF) was used to prepare WCPF/PLA composite via co-extrusion. The WCPF was extracted from the waste corrugated paper by beating in a Valli beating machine and grinding in a disc grinder. KH-550 coupling agent was used to modify the surface of WCPF to improve the interface adhesive strength between the WCPF and PLA matrix. The effects of the contents of WCPF and KH-550 coupling agent on the mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallization properties, and thermostability of the WCPF/PLA composite were studied. The results show that the WCPF can be well separated from each other. The WCPF can be uniformly dispersed in the PLA matrix through a co-extrusion process. WCPF can increase the mechanical strength and deformation resistance ability of WCPF/PLA composite, and KH-550 coupling agent can further improve that of the WCPF/PLA composite. A novel, biodegradable substrate based, and cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensor was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of one of the major neurotransmitters, dopamine, which can be utilised as a disposable electrode for point-of-care diagnostic applications. The active material CuSnB decorated over cellulose paper exhibits good sensitivities of 3.92 μA μM−1 cm−2 with a limit of detection of 0.5 nM. Moreover, the flexible sensor demonstrated superior selectivity towards co-existing metabolites such as ascorbic acid, glucose, and uric acid, in addition to stability at various mechanical deformations. The research results and evaluation of the applicability of the original composition of hybrid paper based on silver nanowires (AgNWs), cellulose pulp (CP), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented and discussed. The material tested was used to manufacture sensors for mechanical deformation resulting from external influences or related to human activity interactions. The sensors were fabricated using an AgNWs + CP suspension and additives by the vacuum filtration method. The substrate obtained was machined and then laminated with a layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The recorded responses to selected types of imposed mechanical interactions in the form of changes in the relative resistance of the sensor throughout the tests showed a close cause-and-effect relationship. The response of the tested systems when applying an alternating magnetic field was also observed. The results indicate that the proposed solutions can find application in the monitoring of mechanical interactions resulting from the dynamic behavior of physical objects, as well as derived from selected human vital functions. Paper-type gas diffusion layer (GDL) plays the role of structural support, mass transport, electron and heat transfer in the fuel cell. The deformation and fracture behavior of paper-type GDL directly determines its physical characteristics. In this paper, we obtained the distribution function of fiber length among intersections using statistical analysis. Based on the bending theory and fracture analysis, the deformation model and the maximum allowable pressure criterion of paper-type GDL are established. The deformation modulus is related to the modulus and the initial volume fraction of carbon fiber, with an ideal value of 1.4 MPa. The tensile fracture is the main form of fiber fracture. The maximum allowable pressure is related to the expected fracture probability, the strength and the initial volume fraction of carbon fiber. The residual strain increases and the deformation modulus decreases with load range, which means that the strength of the paper-type GDL is weakened when residual strain occurs. Accurately modeling the material behavior of paper and paperboard is proven to be highly demanding. Most difficulties arise from the pronounced anisotropic nature of the material. Additionally, differences in the in‐plane and out‐of‐plane behavior as well as non‐isochoric plasticity, which affects the elastic behavior, further deepen the issue at hand. Therefore, an material model is proposed, capable of capturing the anisotropic elasto‐plastic behavior of paper and paperboard. The constitutive framework was derived in a thermodynamically consistent manner, valid for finite deformations, and accounting for the coupling of in‐plane and out‐of‐plane behavior. The influence of the orthotropic anisotropy on the elasto‐plastic material response was introduced through the concept of structural tensors. A slight generalization of the elastic part of the free energy was made in order to incorporate the densification effect. A well known yield criterion was modified in order to account for some inconsistencies. Non‐isotropic hardening was considered by defining a set of coupled internal variables. Flexible strain sensors are indispensable components providing repeatable electronic signals responding to mechanical deformations. Nevertheless, there is a stringent demand for flexible sensors to maintain normal performance in daily use and even in harsh conditions, such as high humidity and high temperature. Herein, inspired by scorpions, a highly sensitive flexible strain sensor based on ceramic fiber paper (CFP) with superhydrophobic and high‐temperature‐resistant properties is developed by a combination of mechanical cutting and spray coating method, which minimizes performance degradation commonly seen in polymer‐based and textile‐based sensors under harsh conditions. The prepared strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity (gauge factor ≈1254), low detection limit (0.078%), fast response time (108 ms), and notable stability (over 10 000 cycles). The ultra‐high sensitivity originates from the existence of the micro‐scale cracks. To further improve stability of the device in some harsh conditions, superhydrophobic and heat‐resisting coatings consisting of SiO2 aerogels and SiO2 nanoparticles are introduced onto the surface of CFP. Owing to the synergistic effect of the high‐temperature resistance of ceramics fibers and the coatings, the device operates normally at temperature up to 220 °C with a water contact angle of 159°, showing great promises for harsh conditions, especially in the industrial and aerospace fields. Cement stabilization is a widely applied technique in improving the workability and geotechnical properties of soft clay. This paper investigated the influence of cement stabilization on the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the deformation behavior of unsaturated cement–stabilized soft clay. The combined effect of cementation and partial saturation on the hydromechanical behavior of cement-stabilized soils was discussed. The SWCC of stabilized soil was measured in the full suction range under drying and wetting paths using the pressure plate method, the filter paper method, and the vapor equilibrium technique. The deformation behaviors of cement-stabilized soft soil were investigated by conducting suction-controlled oedometer tests. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope micrographs and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests were performed to investigate the effects of cement content on the evolution of soil pore structures. The test results showed that the water retention capacity of the stabilized soft clay increased with increasing cement content. The SWCC showed a significant hysteretic behavior in the boundary effect zone and transition zone, whereas the hysteretic effect was unapparent in the residual zone. The increased cement content had a more significant hysteretic effect on the SWCC. The deformation resistance capacity increased as the cement content and matric suction increased. However, the effect of matric suction on deformation resistance capacity decreased as the cement content increased. With the increase in cement content, the macropores were converted to small interaggregate pores, the pore spaces were distributed more uniformly, and the particle surface became rougher, resulting in higher water retention capacity and significant hysteresis of the SWCC. In recent years, as the electronics industry has driven the development of human civilization, flexible responsive materials have become highly favored in sensing applications. However, most flexible materials are not stable under high-temperature conditions, so only a few flexible responsive materials are suitable for high-temperature and high-strength applications. In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added as conductive material into poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS) solutions to prepare MWCNTs/polyimide aerogel-based papers (CPs) by a simple method. The introduction of MWCNTs into the ordered multilayer folded structure of the CPs provided a conductive pathway and improved their thermal stability. When the multilayer folded structure was deformed, the MWCNTs between the layers contacted each other, increasing the number of electron transport channels and providing a larger contact area for the conductive network. When the deformation was removed, the MWCNTs in the interlayer contact zone rapidly separated, providing stable and excellent responsiveness at high temperatures (CP-2: ΔR/R 0 value of up to −0.45 at 300 °C) and favorable stability after 1000 cycles (CP-2: RV retention of 92.4 % at 25 °C and 80.5 % at 300 °C). The moisture transport at the fuser nip of printers is postulated to be the main reason for paper curls. However, the fundamental mechanisms of paper curling remain unclear. Observing the moisture transport inside a sheet of paper through experiments is difficult because moisture transport rapidly occurs in a micro-scale thickness. Therefore, developing a theoretical model is crucial to understand the mechanisms of paper curling and to control the curls. In this study, we proposed a multiphysics model that includes the moisture and heat transport and mechanical deformation. The elasticity, plasticity, viscosity, and expansion caused by moisture were considered in the mechanical model to describe the complex material characteristics of paper. The curvature of curls was calculated using an effective two-spring model. The mechanisms of curling in printers and the direction of curls were understood through finite element simulations. The proposed model can qualitatively predict the paper curls observed in experiments. Tissue paper is a thin complex nonlinear fibrous material made from fiber layers thinner (≈100 μm) than a human hair. Though it appears as a slender two‐dimensional material to our eyes, its internal microstructure reveals an intricate architected fibrous network of only 1–5 wood fibers within its thickness. The fiber network is folded in one direction giving rise to a characteristic crepe structure. Using high‐speed imaging, the crepe structure is shown to emerge from a dynamic, coupled mechanical deformation processes of fracture and buckling, occurring on a length scale of few hundred micrometer. Bending and stretching of the folds at the macroscale of the paper and at the microscale of the individual fibers are shown to govern the material's tensile properties, including the strain to rupture and the elastic modulus. The thermal response in paper has been studied by thermography. It was observed that an inhomogeneous deformation pattern arose in the paper samples during tensile testing. In the plastic regime a pattern of warmer streaks could be observed in the samples. On the same samples digital image correlation (DIC) was used to study local strain fields. It was concluded that the heat patterns observed by thermography coincided with the deformation patterns observed by DIC. Because of its fibrous network structure, paper has an inhomogeneous micro-structure, which is called formation. It could be shown that the formation was the cause of the inhomogeneous deformations in paper. Finite element simulations was used to show how papers with different degrees of heterogeneity would deform. Creped papers, where the strain at break has been increased, were analysed. For these paper it was seen that an overlaid compaction of the paper was created during the creping process. During tensile testing this was recovered as the paper network structure was strained. The electromagnetic wave irradiation has obstructed the precise operation of the high-tech electronic equipment and threatened the health of the bodies during the 5G era. It is critical to develop electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with remarkable shielding effectiveness along with lightweight and flexible properties, while the integrations of the heat management performances have been gradually indispensable, especially in wearable electronic device applications. Anchoring the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets on the surfaces of the recycled carbon fibers (RCF) and assembling heterostructure can be regarded as effective strategies, while simultaneously solving the conductivity reduction and the corresponding performance degradation bottlenecks of the thermal-recycling carbon fiber. The construction of the RCF-MXene paper performs remarkable EMI shielding performance of 45.7 dB, while the specific SE/t can be improved to 7723.85 dB cm2 g-1, along with impressive photothermal and electrothermal conversion abilities. After coating PDMS layers, the flexible RCF-MXene@PDMS film maintains stable EMI shielding performance when experiencing in-situ electrothermal conversion and after 10000-cycle mechanical deformation processes. Exhibiting multifunctionality by facile synthesis strategies, the RCF-MXene-based materials provide great potential as next-generation candidates in wearable electronic devices, together with promoting the advancement of the sustainable reuse of the carbon fibers resources. In this work, we present a methodology to assess wrist pressure during the handwriting process. Using optical coherence tomography, it was possible to determine the deformation suffered by the paper during the handwriting process. A calibration of the deformation suffered by the paper as a function of the pressure exerted by the pen was performed, making it possible to determine several parameters of interest, such as the radius of the pen tip sphere R = 488 ± 2 ¡im, the Poisson coefficient v = 0.30 ± 0.02 and the effective Young's modulus of bond paper 75 g/m2. To this end, we developed a method for determining the Hooke modulus for a spring, with which we built a device for applying a known force to a ballpoint pen during the handwriting process. We also performed the study depending on the type of substrate, with five volunteers trying to copy the same signature on four different types of paper. Using the optical coherence tomography technique, we demonstrate that it is possible to differentiate the authorship of a signature also by the depth of deformation on the paper. The state-of-the-art in paper micro-mechanics calls for novel experimental data covering the full-field hygro-expansion of inter-fiber bonds, i.e., the 3D morphological changes and inter-fiber interactions. Therefore, a recently developed full-field single fiber hygro-expansion measurement methodology based on global digital height correlation is extended to orthogonal inter-fiber bonds, to investigate their full-field quasi-3D hygroscopic behavior. A sample holder has been developed which enables the quasi-3D characterization of the initial geometry of individual inter-fiber bonds, including the fiber thickness and width along the length of the fibers as well as the degree of wrap around and contact area of the bond, which are vital for understanding the inter-fiber bond hygro-mechanics. Full-field hygroscopic testing reveals the inter-fiber interactions: (i) the transverse hygro-expansion of each fiber strongly reduces when approaching the bonded area, due to the significantly lower longitudinal hygro-expansion of the other bonded fiber. (ii) The relatively large transverse strain of one fiber stretches the other crossing fiber in its longitudinal direction, thereby significantly contributing to the sheet scale hygro-expansion. (iii) Out-of-plane bending is observed in the bonded region which is driven by the significant difference in transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion of, respectively, the top and bottom fiber constituting the bond. A bi-layer laminate model is employed to rationalize the bending deformation and an adequate match is found with the experimental data. Under the assumption of zero bending, which represents constrained inter-fiber bonds inside a paper sheet, the model can predict the contribution of the transverse strain in the bonded regions to the sheet-scale hygro-expansion. Dimensional stability issues may occur in paper sheets when subjected to moisture content variations. Paper is in fact mainly composed of hydrophilic wood fibres that experience significant dimensional changes upon humidity variations. The hygro-expansive deformations at the single fibre level and their effects on the meso-structural fibrous network govern the hygro-mechanical response of paper at the macroscopic, sheet scale. The present contribution aims at offering a relation between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the hygro-expansive behaviour of paper. Experimental observations of the hygroscopic and mechanical response at the sheet level have been performed, providing the anisotropic hygro-elastic properties of the material in the in-plane principal directions. To understand the multi-scale nature of the phenomenon, a periodic two dimensional meso-structural model of the fibrous network has been developed. The effective material response is extracted via homogenization. The influence of several meso-scale parameters (hygro-mechanical properties and geometry of fibres, inter-fibre bonds and of the network) on the overall behaviour of the material can be studied; in particular, the in-plane fibre orientation distribution along a preferential direction affects strongly the anisotropy of the macro-scale response. The proposed model has been adopted to represent the effective material response, focusing on the hygro-elastic response only and thus neglecting possible irreversible effects occurring at the different scales. A comparison of the experimental data with the results obtained from the model as a function of the fibre orientation distribution reveals a good accuracy of the prediction, thereby showing its applicability to estimate paper’s hygro-expansive response. The article analyses the effects of paper moisture content on energy absorbed during its tensile testing in the range of moisture equilibrium obtained during paper air conditioning at a temperature of 23 °C. To predict changes in breaking energy caused by changes in moisture content, two calculation methods were proposed. This work presents the combination of pencil-on-paper with the hydrophobic fumed SiO 2 (Hf-SiO 2) coating and stretchable kirigami structures from laser cutting to prepare a superhydrophobic, stretchable pencil-on-paper multifunctional sensing platform. The resulting sensor exhibits a large response to NO 2 gas at elevated temperature from self-heating, which is minimally affected by the variations in the ambient temperature and relative humidity, as well as mechanical deformations such as bending and stretching states. The integrated temperature sensor and electrodes with the sensing platform can accurately detect temperature and electrophysiological signals to alert for adverse thermal effects and cardiopulmonary diseases. The thermal therapy and electrical stimulation provided by the platform can also deliver effective means to battle against inflammation/infection and treat chronic wounds. This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. Abstract A number of problems associated with dimensional stability of paper products have to do with hygroexpansion in response to changes in humidity or moisture content. The main underlying mechanism of hygroexpansion in paper is the effect of the change of fiber cross-sections transferred through fiber bonds. In fact, the transverse expansion of fibers can be an order of magnitude greater than the longitudinal expansion. Addressing such problems using modeling on the microscale is associated with large computational costs since both the bonds and the fibers need to be resolved. We present a method for modeling the hygro or thermal expansion of interconnected fiber networks modeled with beam elements and connected through beam-to-beam contact. Being a line structure, beams can only support pointwise contact, which poses a challenge for modeling the force transfer induced by the deformation of the cross-sections at the contact point. The idea of implementing the stress transfer is to use a concurrent multiscale approach in which the bond level is resolved in detail using the configuration of the fibers and the computed strains are passed over to the beam elements. We verify and prove the applicability of this approach by comparing it with continuum models. We demonstrate the advantage of using this approach in terms of its tremendous saving in time. The use of beam models for modeling the hygro- or thermal expansion of fiber networks enables considering relevant sizes in the problems involving dimensional stability, in particular those associated with embedded inhomogeneities. We will show the applicability of the model by providing insights into published experimental observations on the hygroexpansion properties of paper products. Finally, we will demonstrate that the use of a 2D model to simulate the inter-fiber bonds in a network, not only leads to underestimation of out-of-plane deformations, but also to overestimation of the contribution of the transverse deformation of fibers to the in-plane dimensional change of the network. In this paper, a three-dimensional anisotropic multi-surface model for the in-plane elastoplastic deformation of paper and paperboard is developed. The model is based on the concept of structural tensors. It employs three different yield functions and parameterised consistency conditions for three different loading scenarios. The evolution of the yield surface with plastic strain is described by multiple hardening variables. Furthermore, the evolution equations are integrated using the unconditionally stable backward Euler method. Also, the internal variables are updated using a particular form of the elastic predictor/plastic corrector algorithm. The constitutive model is calibrated from a set of simple uniaxial tension tests performed in various directions of the material and is validated against loading in other directions. Additionally, the predictive capability as well as the numerical performance of the constitutive model is accessed against an existing non-quadratic plasticity model. In this paper, an efficient computational framework for the full-wave design by optimization of complex microwave passive devices, such as antennas, filters, and multiplexers, is described. The framework consists of a computational engine, a 3D object modeler, and a graphical user interface. The computational engine, which is based on a finite element method with curvilinear higher-order tetrahedral elements, is coupled with built-in or external gradient-based optimization procedures. For speed, a model order reduction technique is used and the gradient computation is achieved by perturbation with geometry deformation, processed on the level of the individual mesh nodes. To maximize performance, the framework is targeted to multicore CPU architectures and its extended version can also use multiple GPUs. To illustrate the accuracy and high efficiency of the framework, we provide examples of simulations of a dielectric resonator antenna and full-wave design by optimization of two diplexers involving tens of unknowns, and show that the design can be completed within the duration of a few simulations using industry-standard FEM solvers. Electrical contact resistance (ECR) at the interface is of significant importance in many fields of science and engineering. Current methods for contact resistance estimation are based on the typical nearly incompressible rough surfaces, which is not suitable for porous material with large deformation in the compression process. The objective of this work is to build an analytical model for ECR between solid material and porous material, for example, which could be used to predict power loss between carbon fiber paper and bipolar plate in the fuel cell. First, mathematical description of solid roughness surface is built by classic Greenwood and Williamson model. Considering the porous structure, carbon fiber paper is modeled by multi-layer construction based on random line network model. Effect of large compression of carbon paper on contact behavior is furtherly given necessary attention in this study. Contact pressure and resistance are calculated based on statistical methods with consideration of multi-deformation states. Then, experiments are carried out to validate the numerical model. The results show good agreements with the numerical model. Finally, influences of carbon paper compression and main parameters are systematically discussed based on the numerical model. The model developed will enhance our understanding regarding the relation between contact pressure and contact resistance at the interface for solid material and fiber-structure material. Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. Its out-of-plane properties play a crucial role in converting paperboard to a carton through the creasing and folding process. The aim of this study is to describe the out-of-plane mechanical response with an elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. The model was derived from a thermodynamic framework and was based on the multiplicative split of the deformation gradient in the context of hyperelasticity. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the plastic behavior. The model considers both material densification and internal friction effects, which were observed experimentally. According to the experimental behavior, a quadratic yield locus under pure shear loading was assumed in the model. Finally, the model was validated with a cylinder compression test and found to capture the highly anisotropic, elastic-plastic behavior accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wet cleaning of ancient papers is a common treatment performed for the removal of degradation products, external contaminants and salts, which can promote the degradation of cellulose (i.e., hydrolysis, oxidation). In this research, the effects on the mechanical properties of paper samples caused by wet cleaning treatments were evaluated by considering the changes induced in the ultimate tensile strength, deformation at break and flexibility. For this purpose, samples were subjected to different aqueous cleaning treatments such as immersion in deionised water and the application of rigid gels of agar and gellan gum at different concentrations was carried out. Tensile tests were run, and morphological observations of paper by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were recorded. Contrary to the significant changes in the mechanical properties of paper samples after immersion treatment (an increase in flexibility as the elongation at break), the use of gelled systems caused slight improvement in the mechanical properties of paper (in both the ultimate tensile strength as well as in the breaking strain). Changes in the mechanical properties of paper were also correlated with slight changes in the diameter of the cellulose fibres as a consequence of the swelling action of water molecules, especially in the case of immersion treatment. Finally, the tensile tests performed on the paper samples after thermo-hygrometric accelerated artificial ageing (70 °C and 65 % RH) demonstrated that cleaning treatments by rigid gels did not seem to accelerate any sort of paper degradation in the mid to long term. Understanding the effects of water absorption on the geometry of a paper sheet is important for inkjet printing applications, since internal moisture content differences may cause unacceptable out-of-plane deformations. The present work focuses on moisture-induced deformations due to a moisture content that is uniform over the thickness of the sheet. Large enough in-plane differences will cause the sheet to buckle, leading to a wavy pattern at the edges of the sheet. Two approaches are utilized to study this for levels of moisture content up to and including the threshold for buckling. An analytical approach, based on geometrically nonlinear plate theory (von Kármán theory), and a numerical one, using commercially available finite element software, are presented. As a first reference problem an isotropic circular plate, wetted uniformly at its center, is solved both analytically and numerically for the in-plane stress distribution, the buckling threshold, and the resulting buckling mode. Secondly, the same is done for an orthotropic rectangular plate, wetted at its edges. Here, in the analytical approach a Rayleigh–Ritz analysis is employed to approximate the buckling threshold. Flexible display technology has been successfully commercialized with foldable and rollable displays. Because of the limitation of the flexible technology, stretchable displays have attracted great attention which capable of realizing freeform design as a post‐flexible display. However, no technology has yet provided sufficient stretchability and resolution to realize genuine free‐form displays. We report on a highly deformable AMOLED display which capable of elongation over 20%. Moreover, our display is capable of more than 15% shrinkage deformation. We also developed low‐temperature thermal shrink process to make the most of the potential of the display. The mechanical response of three different structural core sandwich panels in out-of-plane compression and shear has been analyzed. Specific core shapes examined are arc-tangent, wavy trapezoidal and hemispherical. Unit cells consisting of representative elements of the core attached to face sheets were selected for analysis. Both face sheets and core were assumed made from paper. Finite element analysis employing large deformation and rotations and orthotropic elastic–plastic behavior was used. The results show that the arc-tangent and trapezoidal cores are prone to collapse by extensive bending and buckling, whereas the hemispherical core behaved more stably in compression and shear. Core sheets with a hemispherical shape were prepared from copy paper sheets in a specially designed forming machine. Sandwich test specimens were prepared from this core and tested in out-of-plane compression, and the load-displacement response was compared to predictions from finite element simulations. In this paper the deep drawing of cups from fiber-based materials, which is explored for some time now, is further developed through the use of micron-small vibrations in an ultrasonic frequency range within the deep-drawing tools. The design of such tools required preliminary investigations concerning the limitations of use and feasibility of this technology. These include tests for necessary clearances between punch and die, occurring pressure in this clearance, necessary punch forces and the heating of the material under the vibrational influence. According to these experiences a flexible test machine was developed enabling the examination of the deep drawing process with vibrating tools as well as its possibilities and limits. The dependence of punch force and cup quality from the ultrasonic parameters was determined and it was found that the required punch force can be reduced by up to 80% and a significant smoothing of the cup surface as well as an improved stiffness of the 3D-shapes is achieved. Superhydrophobic coatings on paper were achieved by means of incorporating micro-nano hierarchical topography, where the water droplet was repelled and rested in a spherical shape. A silica sol, which was prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor and trimethylethoxysilane (TMES) as co-precursor, was poured on the paper to form a superhydrophobic surface. The coating was fluorine-free, environmentally friend, and could be easily fabricated on different kinds of papers. Besides, the transmittance of prepared coating reached up to 92% in visible light range, and the words on treated paper showed a good visualization. Moreover, the treated paper showed superior mechanical durability against 100 times of deformation, remarkable stability towards both the acidic and basic solutions. The treated paper could withstand 70 cycles of water condensation test (from 60 °C, 90% relative humidity to 10 °C) without losing superhydrophobicity, suggesting a long-term protection for paper. This document is a summary of a special issue of the International Journal of Mining, Reclamation & Environment focused on innovative mine backfill materials and structures. The issue includes fourteen research papers that discuss various aspects of backfill mining, such as stability, hydration characteristics, mechanical features, and curing effects. The papers cover topics such as predicting heavy metal occurrence forms in tailings, using steel slag in backfill materials, assessing the effects of backfill ingredients on mechanical features, and developing simulation models to predict fill strength. Other papers explore the impact of curing humidity on backfill deformation and mechanical characteristics, the spatial evolution of fracture toughness under external sulphate attack, the behavior of fibre-reinforced backfill specimens under different strain rates, and the ideal Poisson's ratio for grainy backfill products. The issue also includes papers on the stress features of backfill materials at different temperatures, inclinometer state analysis for field observation, the characterization of filling effects in coal mines, mixing features of waste rocks in backfill, and the use of microgrid fibres as a reinforcement in cemented rock fills. In this paper, the creep and relaxation behaviors of Xuan paper during the stretching process were studied. The results indicated that Burgers model could describe the creep behavior of Xuan paper perfectly including elastic deformation, viscoelastic deformation and plastic deformation. For the total creep, elastic strain, viscoelastic strain and plastic strain accounted for 62-78, 17-25, and 4-13 %, respectively. At a certain temperature and humidity, elastic strain, viscoelastic strain and plastic strain increased with the increase in stress in the range of 0.2-0.8 σ, and the proportion of viscoelastic and plastic strain increased, but the proportion of elastic strain decreased. Further, the proportion of each strain tended to be stable at last. A five-element Maxwell model could describe the relaxation of Xuan paper effectively. Significant dimensional variations may occur in paper-based materials when subjected to changes in moisture content. Moisture induced deformations are governed by the swelling of individual fibres, which is transferred through inter-fibre bonds to the entire fibrous network. Complex interactions between mechanical and hygro-expansive properties take place in the bonding areas, affecting the overall material response. In most network models, the role of these inter-fibre bonds is not explicitly incorporated. This work presents a periodic meso-structural model for the discrete fibrous network, which considers the free-standing fibre segments and inter-fibre bonds. Despite its simplicity, the reference unit-cell enables the incorporation of relevant micro- and meso-structural features such as network structure, fibres and bond geometry and hygro-elastic properties. The proposed model is solved analytically through a proper homogenization strategy, allowing to recover the paper’s anisotropic hygro-mechanical response in terms of effective elastic constants and effective hygro-expansive coefficients, exploiting the coupling at the meso-structural level between hygroscopic and mechanical behavior. A comparison with experimental results obtained from the literature shows that the presented approach is quite accurate in predicting the overall paper response, thereby revealing the influence of several meso-scale parameters (e.g. fibre orientation, dimensions, mechanical strength). In the field of LCD, Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADS) technology is widely used due to its outstanding features, such as high transmittance, wide view, and weak color shift. However, the ADS technology still has intractable problems. One of the most difficult problems is the dark state light leakage under mechanical deformation which is inherent in ADS. In this paper, a novel model called Zero Light Leakage ADS (ZLL‐ADS) is proposed, which can completely eliminate the dark state light leakage even under deformation. The key point of ZLL‐ADS is the introduction of +A plate in ADS panel. The important role of +A is to compensate the phase retardation of liquid crystals to avoid dark state light leakage caused by external stress on ADS panel. By applying ZLL‐ADS technology, the product properties of BOE's ADS Pro, especially the quality of the dark picture has been greatly improved, and the advantages of ADS in high transmittance and wide view are still maintained. A global sea-level fall during the Latest Danian Event (LDE) is observed in a regional and worldwide context in widely-separated locations with different tectonic and depositional settings (Clemmensen and Thomsen, 2005). A similar trend in the central and south-western Desert of Egypt is synchronous with a weak tectonic event, which results in the absence of the upper portion of the regressive phase during the LDE, of the P3b Subzone which is seen in “tectonically stable” areas. This weak tectonic event is linked to more intense deformation of the Syrian Arc (Swell) of the Bahariya Oasis, which is synchronous with the global Laramide orogeny. Over the entire Dakhla Basin, the similar vertical sequence tracks can be traced across the area and indicate relative sea-level changes rather than shoreline shifts, and consequently reflect a eustatic origin. Correlation with the Arabian Plate charts (Sharland et al., 2001, 2004; Haq and Al-Qahtani; 2005; Simmons et al., 2007) do not match with the regional reconstruction of Farouk and El-Sorogy (2015) because these Arabian Plate charts are based on mega-sequences controlled by a dramatic tectonic event with erosion along the northeast Arabian plate (Haq and Al-Qahtani, 2005). Recently, after recalibration of many eustatic charts the conclusions made by Farouk and El-Sorogy (2015) concerning the late Danian sea-level fall (e.g., Haq et al., 1987; Hardenbol et al., 1998; Lüning et al., 1998; Guasti et al., 2005; Clemmensen and Thomsen, 2005; Schmitz et al., 2011; Gradstein et al., 2012) have been confirmed. Although offsite construction (OSC) has emerged as a promising solution to low productivity issues in the construction industry, knowledge for effective management of OSC projects is yet to be explored and developed further. To enhance our understanding of the landscape of the current OSC management knowledge, this study identified and reviewed 83 operation-level OSC management papers. By mapping the papers on three dimensions (i.e. OSC project type, project phase, and management area), this review sheds light on the knowledge areas addressed more frequently than the other areas over time in a detailed manner. The review also shows that papers on planning, manufacturing, maintenance phases and schedule, resources, and stakeholder management areas have a relatively large number of citations, implying a great interest in these research areas. Finally, the review discusses that substantial research work is still required in the areas of OSC execution strategy, emerging technologies in offsite manufacturing and schedule management, internet of things (IoT)-based material logistics planning and tracking, building information model-based visualization and decision support, and social and environmental effects of stakeholder engagement in OSC projects. The paper presents an effective plate formulation based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) and a novel simple quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory (S-Q3HSDT) to study static bending, free vibration, and buckling behaviors of functionally graded plates. In S-Q3HSDT fashion, five unknowns per node are included; both shear deformation and thickness-stretching effects across the thickness are taken into account; and the awkward shear locking phenomenon is avoided. The requirement for C 1 -continuity in terms of the S-Q3DHSDT is straightforwardly possessed with the aid of inherent high-order continuity of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS), which serve as basis functions in our IGA formulation. The superior performance and accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerous numerical examples. The calculated results are then compared with reference solutions, investigating the effects of boundary conditions, gradient index, and other aspect ratios on mechanical responses of functionally graded plates. Kirigami—the Japanese art of cutting paper—has recently inspired the design of highly stretchable and morphable mechanical metamaterials that can be easily realized by embedding an array of cuts into a sheet. This study focuses on thin plastic sheets perforated with a hierarchical pattern of cuts arranged to form an array of hinged squares. It is shown that by tuning the geometric parameters of this hierarchy as well as thickness and material response of the sheets not only a variety of different buckling‐induced 3D deformation patterns can be triggered, but also the stress–strain response of the surface can be effectively programmed. Finally, it is shown that when multiple hierarchical patterns are brought together to create one combined heterogeneous surface, the mechanical response can be further tuned and information can be encrypted into and read out via the applied mechanical deformation. This work presents the evaluation of a multiparametric sensing device on paper fabricated by inkjet printing, for applications such as smart packaging-labeling and disposable biosensors where biocompatibility and low cost are key factors. The device is able to measure simultaneously relative humidity, temperature and compressive and tensile bending. Commercial silver nanoparticle ink and PEDOT:PSS were printed onto inkjet photo glossy paper using a drop-on-demand inkjet printer forming an interdigitated electrode array and a meander shaped micro-ribbon. Humidity measurements revealed that sensor response, which is effectively expressed by the relationship between paper substrate resistance and relative humidity was similar for both materials utilized as electrodes. Temperature coefficients of resistance (TCR) were extracted for Ag-nanoparticle and PEDOT:PSS - based temperature sensors respectively in the range of 25–45 °C. The bending tests indicated that both materials exhibited similar trend in tensile bending, with resistance increasing in a linear manner up to a maximum tensile length of 900 μm. Ag-nanoparticle ink outperformed PEDOT:PSS ink in terms of repeatability, sensitivity and hysteresis. In compressive bending measurements Ag-nanoparticle and PEDOT:PSS gauge factors exhibited similar gauge factor of opposite sign. How to slow down the casing deformation of shale gas wells is one of the problems to be solved urgently. Fault slip is inevitable, so how to prevent casing deformation has become an important research hotspot. In this paper, a new casing deformation control method based on solid expandable tubular (SET) technology is proposed to reduce casing deformation. This paper establishes a three-dimensional dynamic model of casing deformation considering formation pressure, frictional contact, and nonlinear loads, analyzes the advantages of using SET technology in cementing, and researches the influence of SET and annular cement parameters on casing deformation. The research results show that: on the basis of the existing cementing cement, the use of SET technology is more effective. The inner diameter of the casing after deformation will increase by more than 10 mm on the current basis, which is more conducive to subsequent construction. The expansion ratio of SET has different slowing effects on the casing deformation. In addition, the study also found that the effect of using "flexible cement + SET" is better. If only flexible cement is used, the elastic modulus of ring cement is 0.01 GPa. In order to achieve the same effect, in the case of the "flexible cement + SET" process, only annular cement with an elastic modulus of 0.1 GPa is required, which is equivalent to reducing the difficulty of cement construction. An advanced stability analysis of surrounding rock can assure safe construction in tunnels. However, in traditional analysis methods, geometric information on the rock mass discontinuities is obtained by a geological compass and treated as an infinitely expanded plane in a numerical simulation, which is inaccurate in both geometric and numerical models. To solve this problem, this paper studied a control network and an image stitch method to assess the accuracy of a geometric model and proposed a more accurate method to obtain the geometric information of rock mass discontinuities based on digital photogrammetry. Based on discrete fracture network and discrete element method (DFN-DEM), this paper treated the rock mass discontinuities obtained by digital photogrammetry as finite disk planes and simulated the excavation process of the Qianyu tunnel. According to the simulation results, this paper determined the specific location of the collapse disaster on the tunnel face, which is of great significance to tunnel support design. Comparing the deformation of the surrounding rock mass on the tunnel face in the simulation results with the actual situation, this paper verified the feasible accuracy of this method in analysing the stability of the surrounding rock mass on a tunnel face in advance. This paper presents a modified evaluation approach for the structural-capacity-reserve (SCR) based on the static stability behavior of single-layer spherical lattice shells to achieve more accurate assessment results of seismic damage endurance. The SCR index in this paper is calculated by integrating the redefined residual structural capacity (RSC) ratio based on post-earthquake static stability behavior within the range of damage degrees caused by strong earthquakes. Compared with the assessment work for seismic damage endurance in the existing literature, the proposed RSC ratio in this paper could take into account both ultimate load-bearing strength and residual deformation. Additionally, the specific quantitative indicator in the proposed assessment method should also be determined according to whether the residual nodal displacement of the lattice shell after an earthquake exceeds the limit value state specified by the design code. The numerical results in the case study indicate that the residual load-bearing strength of the lattice shell remains relatively constant under the same damage state induced by different earthquakes, with residual deformation significantly impacting the assessment of seismic damage endurance. Thereby, the required RSC can be controlled by reducing the residual nodal displacements of the lattice shell under strong earthquakes to achieve a well-balanced design scheme. Geogrid is a horizontal reinforcement material that is used in geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported (GRPS) embankments in freeways with soft soil. Nevertheless, the long-term deformation mechanics of geogrid in the GRPS embankment under cyclic loading is not clear enough. This paper presents a laboratory model study of a GRPS embankment to study the long-term geogrid strain under cyclic loading. The effects of parameters such as number of load cycles, load frequency, geogrid layer numbers, and length of supporting piles on the long-term strain of geogrid were investigated. The results showed that geogrid strain increased with the number of load cycles, mainly developed in the first 10 000 load cycles and increased slowly in the later period. When the frequency was increased from 1 to 5 Hz, geogrid strain increased dramatically. When compared with the condition of a single geogrid layer, the upper layer of two geogrid layers caused a less geogrid strain. Compared with long piles and short piles GRPS embankments, a sufficient membrane effect of geogrid was found for long-short piles GRPS embankments. Finally, the 95% prediction interval proposed in this paper could be expressed using a logarithmic function, providing a theoretical foundation for future engineering applications. During the water entry process of a trans-domain morphing aircraft, significant impact forces are generated when the aircraft hits the water surface, which will potentially cause the deformation of the cabin structure and might damage the structure or onboard devices. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the water entry process of the cabin structure. This paper analyses changes in fluid loads and the corresponding structural responses during the water entry process. Firstly, the numerical model is established for the water entry process and the modeling method is validated by comparing the results to the experimental data. An empirical formula is developed to correlate the impact loads with the water entry velocities. Then, fluid–structure interaction analysis of the water entry process is performed using a two-way coupling approach. The relationship between structural deformation and the water entry process is then investigated. The results are compared with those without considering the structural deformation. The empirical formula is then modified to reflect the effects of the deformation. Deformation effectively represents the structural integrity of concrete dams and acts as a clear indicator of their operational performance. Predicting deformation is critical for monitoring the safety of hydraulic structures. To this end, this paper proposes an artificial intelligence-based process for predicting concrete dam deformation. Initially, using the principles of feature engineering, the preprocessing of deformation safety monitoring data is conducted. Subsequently, employing a stacking model fusion method, a novel prediction process embedded with multiple artificial intelligence algorithms is developed. Moreover, three new performance indicators—a superiority evaluation indicator, an accuracy evaluation indicator, and a generalization evaluation indicator—are introduced to provide a comprehensive assessment of the model's effectiveness. Finally, an engineering example demonstrates that the ensemble artificial intelligence method proposed herein outperforms traditional statistical models and single machine learning models in both fitting and predictive accuracy, thereby providing a scientific and effective foundation for concrete dam deformation prediction and safety monitoring. Structural planes decrease the strength and stability of rock masses, severely affecting their mechanical properties and deformation and failure characteristics. Therefore, investigation and analysis of structural planes are crucial tasks in mining rock mechanics. The drilling camera obtains image information of deep structural planes of rock masses through high-definition camera methods, providing important data sources for the analysis of deep structural planes of rock masses. This paper addresses the problems of high workload, low efficiency, high subjectivity, and poor accuracy brought about by manual processing based on current borehole image analysis and conducts an intelligent segmentation study of borehole image structural planes based on the U2-Net network. By collecting data from 20 different borehole images in different lithological regions, a dataset consisting of 1,013 borehole images with structural plane type, lithology, and color was established. Data augmentation methods such as image flipping, color jittering, blurring, and mixup were applied to expand the dataset to 12,421 images, meeting the requirements for deep network training data. Based on the PyTorch deep learning framework, the initial U2-Net network weights were set, the learning rate was set to 0.001, the training batch was 4, and the Adam optimizer adaptively adjusted the learning rate during the training process. A dedicated network model for segmenting structural planes was obtained, and the model achieved a maximum F-measure value of 0.749 when the confidence threshold was set to 0.7, with an accuracy rate of up to 0.85 within the range of recall rate greater than 0.5. Overall, the model has high accuracy for segmenting structural planes and very low mean absolute error, indicating good segmentation accuracy and certain generalization of the network. Monitoring the deformation of long-span bridges is essential for assessing structural health and safety. The existing single-camera deformation measurement method is unable to meet the high-precision measurement requirement for the deformation of large-span bridges. This paper proposes a real-time deformation measurement method for the long-span bridge using multi-inertial camera system. The method is based on visual measurement which the target deformation is measured by multiple cameras. Meanwhile, inertial measurement is used to estimate the relative pose of the camera to compensate for camera motion errors. It is applied to the health monitoring system of a long-span bridge. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper is highly consistent with the hydrostatic leveling measurement, with a RMSE of 4.83mm. Uneven settlement phenomenon is very easy to occur in the sandy pulverized ground stratum, the underground pipe corridor longitudinal and transverse stiffness difference is obvious, so that it is easy to crack and deformation due to uneven settlement in this type of stratum. This paper carries out research on uneven settlement and cracking and deformation of Qihe tube corridor, analyzes the reasons leading to uneven settlement and the factors affecting the deformation and cracking of the tube corridor, and provides guidance for foundation treatment and tube corridor repair and mixing and reinforcement. It was found that the concrete structure of the corridor itself had exposed reinforcement, pockmarks and holes, and that cracks on the structure of the corridor sprouted and expanded from these defects. Defects and damages on the concrete structure of the pipeline corridor are contributing factors to the deformation and cracking of the members, and the uneven settlement of the foundation is the main initiating factor for the cracking and deformation. The analysis of the numerical simulation results of similar underground pipeline corridors is carried out, and it is found that the simulation results are consistent with the deformation characteristics of the Qihe pipeline corridor, which further supports the conclusions of this paper. The main stratigraphic factors contributing to the inhomogeneous settlement were found to be the water-rich and loose bodies in the lower part of the strata, as revealed by the physical means and the experimental verification boreholes. Foldable electroluminescent (EL) devices have attracted much attention in recent years. By folding, 2D EL devices can be transformed to 3D structures, which play an important role in foldable, portable, and 3D displays. Foldability is similar to flexibility, but there are differences. Foldable electronic devices mainly focus on the properties of the folding regions, which are flexible or stretchable, while the non‐folding regions may be rigid. On the other hand, folding deformation is usually accompanied by severe and sharp compression and stretching in the folding regions, which have a significant impact on device performance. The unique deformation characteristics make foldable devices complicated in materials, structures, and strategies. In this review, the progress of foldable electronic devices is summarized. According to the crease characteristics, foldable devices are divided into a free‐folding type and a crease‐preset type. First, the materials, structures, and strategies of various non‐luminescent foldable electronic devices are summarized, which will enlighten the research of foldable EL devices. Then, the progress of foldable EL devices is summarized. Foldable EL devices are still in the early stage of research and still face many problems and challenges. Time series dynamic prediction of surface deformation in mining areas can provide reference data for coal mine safety and production, which has important impacts. The combination of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology and the probability integral method (PIM) is commonly used for predicting deformation. However, most surface subsidence prediction in mining areas is based on the static PIM parameters, failing to achieve the three-dimensional (3D) dynamic deformation prediction. This paper proposed a 3D deformation dynamic prediction model (InSAR-3D-CTPIM) between InSAR deformation observations and dynamic coordinate-time PIM (CTPIM) parameters, which can realize the prediction of east–west, north–south, and vertical series deformation caused by mining. The method has been validated by simulation experiments and real experiments in the mining area of Jiansheng Coal Mine in Baisha Reservoir, Henan Province, China. The results showed that the modeling accuracy was improved by 34.3% compared to the traditional multi-rate model, and the accuracy was improved by 28.5% compared to the vertical deformation obtained by the traditional static PIM method. The InSAR-3D-CTPIM model can be used to predict the evolutionary history of basin-wide surface deformation dynamics in coal mining areas, and provide a reference for the early warning and prediction of geological hazards in coal mining areas. In the process of horizontal well construction, the working environment in the well is very complicated. It is difficult to determine the actual deformation and force of the coiled tubing in the wellbore from the load change at the wellhead along. In addition, the coiled tubing wrapped around the reel and entering the wellbore through the injection head may cause an initial residual bending. In this paper, the mathematical model of the coiled tubing under axial load during buckling deformation is established, and the analytical solution with the time term is derived by reasonable simplification of the model. The effect of residual bending on the post-sinusoidal buckling of the coiled tubing in the horizontal well was investigated using the separation variable method. The effect of residual bending variations on the well wall contact forces is analyzed. The research shows that the initial parameter Г is the main factor influencing the post-sinusoidal buckling of the coiled tubing with residual bending. The larger the parameter value Г, the greater the effect of the residual bending on the post-sinusoidal buckling deformation of the coiled tubing, and the earlier the critical point of the mixed sinusoidal-helical buckling of the coiled tubing appears. The compression velocity of the coiled tubing has a significant effect on the well wall contact force. The faster the compression, the greater the contact force. By introducing the time term and the separation variable, this paper provides a new method and theoretical basis for further study of the process of entering sinusoidal-helical buckling of the coiled tubing with initial residual bending.
