• Combined numerical model and GOCI to improve the ability of sediment flux (SF) estimation. • Multi-timescale SFs at typical cross-sections in YRE are estimated in 2013 and 2015. • Locally morphological changes are further estimated, showing erosions in 2013 and 2015. Sediment flux (SF) in the estuary is vital to the coastal and estuarine environment, especially the morphodynamical and ecological processes. However, its quantitative estimation with high accuracy is difficult because it is controlled by complex mechanisms and multiple processes. This study corrects the seasonal variations of the simulated suspended sediment concentration (SSC) by using GOCI-derived surface SSC and calculates the variations of SFs at the main cross-sections in and out of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). The results show that in 2013, 159 Mt and 143 Mt of sediments passed through Xuliujing hydrological station in YRE and estuarine mouth section, respectively. In the inner estuary, the significant seasonal variations of sediment transport are noted that the most seaward transport happens in summer (43.8%) and the least occurs in winter (7.3%). In the outer estuary, the southward transport towards Hangzhou Bay is the most critical pathway, accounting for 109.0% of total transport at mouth section, and is prevalent in autumn and winter. With considerations of sand mining and land reclamation, obviously erosions appear in the whole estuary during both 2013 and 2015. With stronger wind conditions in 2013, severer erosion (161 Mt) happens in outer estuary than that in 2015 (86 Mt). By combining the GOCI-derived surface SSC and the numerical model results, this study can better represent high-frequency hydro- and sediment-dynamical processes to calculate the annual, seasonal, and vertical SFs with improved accuracy. Bedforms like ripples are widely distributed in the coastal zone. They influence the bed roughness thus the estimation of bed shear stress and associated sediment transport. An echo sounder was mounted on a bottom-supported tripod intended to measure the erosion and deposition of seabed in the subaqueous Yellow River Delta, China. However, variations in bed elevation are found to be not the net erosion or deposition at the observation site, but the migration of silt ripples which were generated by waves and pushed back and forth or flattened off by the tidal currents. Ripple heights were observed to be within 0.1–0.7 cm and were used for testing the model of Nielsen (1981). The model overestimated the height of silt ripples as it was developed for sands, but the deviation can be well addressed by incorporating a linear modification (R 2 = 0.79). Alternatively, a new model specifically for silt ripple height was regressed from the field data with R 2 up to 0.78. The existence of silt ripples increases the bed shear stress by 4 times due to the additional bed roughness. A "fluffy layer" overlies the consolidated seabed, therefore, net seabed erosion occurs after the "fluffy layer" is resuspended. A representative critical bed shear stress for net seabed erosion in the study area was found to be 0.8 Pa. The echo sounder can be an alternative tool for observing silt ripples in coastal regions like the Yellow River Delta where the water is too turbid for underwater videos. This paper presents a numerical investigation of multiple identical swash events to study the swash–swash interaction processes and their impacts on beachface evolution. The numerical model, based on the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations, is first calibrated/validated against two different single-event-based data-sets. Multiple swash events are generated by identical solitary waves separated by different time intervals, to achieve weak and strong wave-backwash interactions. After a small number of weak interaction events the main feature is erosion from lower and mid swash region and deposition seaward of the swash in a bed-step, created by a backwash bore, primarily due to bed-load. As the number of waves increases, the strength of this backwash bore reduces because of the reduced beach slope caused by the growing bed-step. This eventually leads to a net quasi-equilibrium between bed- and suspended-load per period in most of the swash and surf zones. For strong interaction, initial bed evolution per event is much slower, due to interactions, and is bed load dominated. A quasi-equilibrium is also established as the influence of suspended load grows. Overall bed change per period within the domain eventually converges in both cases. Final bed profiles (i.e. after the same elapsed time, but different numbers of waves) are fairly similar, both with an offshore swash bar. Both profiles continue to evolve on the offshore side of this bar. However, this evolution is driven by suspended load for the weak interactions and bed load for strong interactions. In the Geum River, a representative altered estuary, in-situ mooring and erosion experiments were conducted to reveal the effects of human-controlled discharge on benthic sediment disturbances. The strong discharge through the estuarine dam increased the current velocities within the benthic boundary layer (BBL) up to 79% and 153% during spring and neap tides, respectively. During the discharge period, the suspended sediment concentration in BBL was five times higher than that during the non-discharge period. During the flood phase, a critical shear stress for erosion (τ ce) was in the range of 0.1278 to 0.1391 Pa. Immediately after the ebb phase with strong discharge, τ ce increased to 0.1848 Pa, and the erosion rate (E) decreased from 33.73 to 14.81 mg m−2 s−1. The repetition of human-controlled discharge removed the erodible sediments within BBL, exposing the underlying consolidated sediment bed with low E and high τ ce. The results suggest that an altered estuary is vulnerable to benthic sediment erosion under combined natural and anthropogenic forcings. Field work combining in-situ mooring and erosion experiments was conducted in the intertidal flat of Asan Bay to reveal the relationship between sediment erodibility and external forcing and the contribution of local erosion to sediment transport. A total of 25 tidal cycles occurred during the mooring period with 6-h submergence and 5.7-h air exposure. The erosion rate (E) for sediment bed during air exposure was 0.007 g m−2 s−1, which was 36% of E (0.019 g m−2 s−1) during submergence. Although the sediment bed was influenced by consolidation during air exposure, the erodibility of the submerged bed was closely associated with the unconsolidated deposits of sediments newly supplied from tidal channel and bed shear stress (τ cw) induced by current-wave interactions. In particular, τ cw could be enhanced by strong winds, which depended on the ratio (H s / h) of significant wave height and water level, directly disturbing the sediment bed. Under weak winds (H s / h < 0.06), the newly deposited sediments with high erodibility increased the bed elevation. A small amount of the sediment bed was eroded (E : 0.006 g m−2 s−1), as a floc erosion, with a slight decrease in suspended sediment concentration (SSC T). This increased the contribution (57.2%) of eroded sediments to SSC T. Under strong winds (H s / h > 0.06) with enhanced τ cw , meanwhile, the erodible sediment in the bed was depleted accompanied by a decrease in bed elevation. A large amount of sediment bed was eroded (E : 0.025 g m−2 s−1), as a surface erosion, resulting in the rapid increase in SSC T and the enhanced seaward sediment flux. The sediments eroded from the bed were supplied to water column accounting for 86.8% of SSC T. This suggests that seaward sediment transport under strong winds could be caused by surface erosion shifting from floc erosion in the intertidal flat. • Ridge slope erosion included inter-rill erosion, headward erosion, and rill erosion process. • Erosion rate reached the maximum during headward erosion process. • The dominated erosion process was detachment-limited after headward erosion occurring. • Re-detachment, transport, and deposition simultaneously occurred with the appearance of headward erosion. Extreme rainfall is becoming more frequent and intense, which no doubt increases the risks and uncertainty of water erosion in widely-used contour ridge systems. Ridge slope erosion can increase the probability of contour failure occurrence and then induce contour ridge losing anti-erosion properties. However, there is little understanding of ridge slope erosive process controlled by contour ridge system responding to extreme rainfall. In this study, five rare earth elements were applied in different ridge segments and soil layers to monitor the successive development of ridge slope erosion process under extreme rainfall in contour ridge system. Simulated rainfall experiments at high rainfall intensity (100 mm h−1) lasting for 60 min were conducted in runoff plots with ridge tillage practices characterized by microtopography indices and ridge geometry indices. Results showed that three sub-processes were observed for ridge slope erosion, including inter-rill erosion, headward erosion, and rill erosion. Headward erosion mainly resulted from the break-point at ridge surface and sidewall collapse at ridge toe, and the pouring of ponding water in furrow greatly promoted rill development. Erosion rate was the largest during headward erosion process, and rill erosion contributed the most to eroded source. The dominated erosion process was transport-limited during inter-rill erosion process, and detachment-limited during headward and rill erosion processes. Sediment transport and deposition processes as well as their transformation occurred simultaneously after the development of headward erosion. Eroded sediment was mainly from the low part of ridge, which was transported by raindrop-impacted sheet flow or overflow. Simulated slope erosion sediment yield and its development process have great significance for quantitative evaluation of erosion and its sources. In this study, a loess slope erosion experiment was implemented indoors to establish a sediment transport capacity formula suitable for loess slope erosion. A two-dimensional slope erosion numerical model was developed with corrected sediment transport capacity formula, and the model was verified by a simulated indoor slope rainfall erosion experiment. The results showed that the corrected slope sediment transport capacity formula is suitable for loess slopes. The proposed two-dimensional slope erosion numerical model could simulate runoff and sediment processes in a relatively more accurate. The most severely eroded areas were the middle and lower parts on erosion spatial contribution based on the simulation erosion results. Good agreements between the simulated and observed results were found for erosion and its spatial distribution. • A mathematical model considering the operation of 24 mega reservoirs was proposed. • The sedimentation mainly occurs in the mainstream during the flood season. • The cascade reservoirs operation leads to easier and prolonged sedimentation. The intensive construction of large dams in the upper Yangtze River Basin (UYRB) has formed large-scale cascade reservoirs and obviously altered the flow regime and sediment transport of the basin. However, few studies have quantitatively described the cumulative impact of these reservoirs on sediment interception. In this study, a flow and sediment transport model that fully considers the operation processes of 24 mega reservoirs in the UYRB was established, and the spatial and temporal variations in sedimentation from 2011 to 2080 were elucidated, assuming repeated series of daily input flow discharge and sediment concentration during 2011–2020 and monthly water operation levels of 24 reservoirs during 2018–2021 as boundary conditions. The results showed an annual average sedimentation of more than 300 Mt in the UYRB during 2011–2060, which falls to 270 Mt in the period 2061–2080, and more than 80% of the sedimentation occurs in the flood season. Nearly 80% of the total sedimentation during 2010–2080 was observed in the mainstream reservoirs, especially the four mega reservoirs in the lower Jinsha River and the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), which accounted for 31.9% and 22.7% of the total sedimentation, respectively. The proportion of sedimentation in mainstream reservoirs will further increase with increasing operation periods. Most reservoirs in the UYRB will not reach sedimentation equilibrium by 2080, except for reservoirs in the Min River Basin. The ratio of siltation capacity to average annual sediment yield determines the percentage of residual siltation capacity of each reservoir. The operation of the cascade reservoirs in 2013–2020 had no more immediate impact on the middle and lower Yangtze River than that in 2003–2012, when the TGR started impoundment. However, the joint operation of these cascade reservoirs has changed the spatial distribution of sedimentation in the UYRB, and will lead to prolonged impacts on downstream channel erosion. Large reservoirs can considerably alter the water-sediment dynamics and morphology of alluvial rivers. Here we review the effects of two mega reservoirs operated with different regulation modes. The Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) on the Yangtze River has a typical anti-seasonal regulation mode, while the Xiaolangdi Reservoir (XLDR) on the Yellow River undergoes a swift drawdown process shortly before the flood season through the Water and Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS). We examine the influence of these regulation schemes on downstream water-sediment dynamics and find that vast sedimentation occurred in both the TGR (128.4 Mt./yr) and XLDR (210.2 Mt./yr). The two rivers have experienced different changes in downstream sediment transport capacity, with coincident flood and sediment peaks in the Yangtze River but with sediment peaks lagging behind flood flow peaks in the Yellow River. On the Yangtze River, highly unsaturated flows from the TGR led to widespread incision downstream, while on the Yellow River, such flows did not induce significant erosion in the first two years following impoundment. The low annual runoff and high sediment yield of the Yellow River mean that riverbed erosion occurred mainly when the water discharge and sediment transport capacity were enhanced by the WSRS. In both rivers, the riverbed eroded and coarsened downstream of the mega dams, lowering the dry season water level. The increase in channel roughness maintained or even raised flood season water levels, potentially increasing flood risk. Sediment budgets reveal that the river segments downstream of the dams switched from sediment sinks to sources due to riverbed incision. Despite new supply from downstream reaches, sediment deficits arising from dam interception and other human activities within the drainage basins have posed significant challenges to the sustainability of the Yangtze and Yellow river deltas, resulting in lower accumulation rates or even transition from progradation to degradation in subaqueous areas. In contrast to the anti-seasonal regulation mode of the TGR, the WSRS of the XLDR has proven very effective at mitigating reservoir sedimentation and has boosted the quantity of sediment reaching the sea, facilitating delta stability and coastal sediment replenishment. Abstract In-stream hydrokinetic energy conversion devices can be deployed in large scale rivers to produce energy with minimal infrastructure costs. They are however shown to actively interact with the channel bathymetry and sediment transport generating a scour and deposition pattern similar to bridge pier. Symmetric, streamwise, aligned turbine installations have shown to introduce only local effects, yet complex configurations may trigger non-local morphodynamic instabilities. Experimental investigations, based on continuous spatio-temporal measurements of bed topography, explore a number of inflow conditions and siting strategies for axial-flow hydrokinetic turbine models. Results show that asymmetric turbine installations in a portion of the channel cross section may introduce weak non-local deformation of the mean bed topography and alter bedform migration velocities. Geomorphic effects become stronger with increasing shear stress and with rotors deployed up to half of the channel width, resulting in mean flow distortion within the channel cross section and inducing an alternating scour-deposition pattern resembling the signature of steady, forced fluvial bars. Non-local effects can be mitigated, narrowing the turbine array, or amplified, distributing turbines in a vane-like installation, leading to different estimates of energy production averaged at the power plant scale. A discussion on the key quantities governing geomorphic effects and the potential benefits of asymmetric turbine deployments is provided as a preliminary guideline towards the expansion of Marine Hydrokinetic energy in rivers. Erosion processes in the watershed and sediment transport cause hydro-morphological changes, eutrophication, and the loss of storage capacity in reservoirs. This study examines the tool for the optimal selection and implementation (TSI) of eco-remediation measures (ERM) in the river basin area to improve water quality and to reduce storage loss in the reservoir in question. The main purpose of this tool is to support decisions and measures taken to correct defined problems and to improve water quality and storage capacity in the watershed while minimising sediment transport. This tool enables the effective and necessary implementation of these measures to the most critical source areas (CSAs). In order to verify its operability, we selected the Ledava reservoir with a transboundary area of 105.25 km2 in NE Slovenia and SE Austria. With the use of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), critical source areas were determined and the effects of eight different scenarios on sediment yield and load transport were simulated. The results showed that CSAs occupy 12% of the watershed and that sediment inflow into the Ledavsko jezero reservoir could be reduced by up to 30%. After determining the CSAs and which measures would be most effective, the implementation plan could be defined. Within this framework, the TSI enabled the selection of effective measures and contributed to the long-term improvement of the ecological status of surface waters required by Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), improving the quality of water bodies of all types to safeguard water ecosystems from harmful consequences. Abstract The complex interactions between flow hydrodynamics, sediment transport, geometry, and changes in base level control the morphodynamic evolution of tidal channels, inlets, and estuaries. Research on these complex settings have involved decades of field, laboratory, and modeling work. Studies on the one-dimensional morphodynamic of well-mixed, tide-dominated channels demonstrate that the evolution of a horizontal channel subject to tidal fluctuations at the ocean boundary is characterized by erosion in the ocean part of the channel and the formation of a landward migrating shoal that, depending on the channel length, may reach the landward boundary. When the shoal reaches the landward end of the domain, it is reflected and a beach forms as the flow and sediment transport reach conditions of equilibrium. At equilibrium, the elevation of the channel bed profile remains constant over a tidal cycle. Building on previous work, this study focuses on the poorly explored effects of nonuniformity of the sediment size distribution and of the interaction between tidal channel and longshore sediment transport on the equilibrium of tidal channels. The model is verified at laboratory scale, and it is then applied to predict equilibrium conditions with nonuniform sediment and without an imposed input of sediment from the ocean. Model results show that nonuniformity of the grain size distribution of the sediment increases the profile concavity. The equilibrium deposits tend to coarsen from the land to the ocean, and the sediment of the landward deposits presents an upward fining pattern. When the imposed input of sediment from the ocean is relatively small, the equilibrium profile presents a stable shoal at the oceanward part of the channel. In the case of a large input of sediment from the ocean, the channel gradually fills with sediment. The grain size distribution of these channel fill deposits coarsen in the oceanward and upward directions. The comparison between model results and field observations shows that the model can qualitatively capture some of the main features of tidal channels and can thus be of aid in coastal management and restoration with proper site-specific modifications. Abstract The impact of wind waves and salt marsh erosion on sediment transport dynamics of macro-tidal estuarine systems has been examined using a numerical model. Morphological changes associated with salt marsh erosion facilitate the propagation of waves to the marsh edges, and increase the resuspension and export of sediments from the estuary. Results also highlight the impact of tidally-modulated changes in wave action upon sediment transport dynamics throughout a tidal cycle and from neap to spring tide. In particular, wave action at the landward margin of the estuary is limited by the shallow water depth, and tidally induced increments in water depth only cause a modest increase in wave shear stresses. At the seaward side of the domain, the impact of waves is limited by the deeper water, and tidally induced water level variations have a more significant control on wave shear stresses. The outcomes contribute new insights that are important for the sediment budget of macro-tidal estuaries facing climate change and have implications for the long-term morphological evolution of estuarine wetlands. Abstract In dual wave farms, i.e., arrays of wave energy converters (WECs) with a dual function – generation of renewable power and mitigation of coastal erosion – the spacing between the WECs is a fundamental design parameter. The present research has the objective of establishing how this parameter affects the shoreline evolution behind the array and, on this basis, to propose and apply a method to determine the optimum spacing for coastal protection. The method is demonstrated on a beach subjected to severe erosion. Five case studies are considered: four with different inter-WEC spacings, and one without the wave farm (baseline). A spectral wave propagation model is applied to analyse the variations in significant wave height behind the WEC array. Longshore sediment transport rates are calculated, and a shoreline model is applied. We find that in all the case studies the dry beach area is greater than in the baseline (no farm) case study, which proves the capacity of the dual WEC array to mitigate the erosive trends of the system. Importantly, we obtain that the inter-WEC spacing plays a fundamental role in the evolution of the shoreline and, consequently, in the effectiveness of the WEC array for coastal protection. The case studies with intermediate spacings yield the best performance in terms of dry beach area. More generally, the benefits of dual wave farms in terms of protection of coastal properties and infrastructure, and the ensuing savings in conventional coastal defence measures (coastal structures, beach nourishment, etc.) contribute to the development of wave energy by enhancing its economic viability. The methodology presented in this paper can be used to optimize the design of dual wave farms elsewhere. Abstract In mountainous catchments, soil erosion and sediment transport are highly variable throughout time and their quantification remains a major challenge for the scientific community. Understanding the temporal patterns and the main controls of sediment yields in these environments requires a long term monitoring of rainfall, runoff and sediment flux. This paper analyses this type of data collected during 7 years (2007–2014), at the outlet of the Galabre River, a 20 km2 watershed, in south eastern France, representative of meso-scale Mediterranean mountainous catchments. This study is based on a hybrid approach using continuous turbidity records and automated total suspended solid sampling to quantify the instantaneous suspended sediment concentrations (SSC), sediment fluxes, event loads and yields. The total suspended sediment yield was 4661 Mg km−2 and was observed during flood events. The two crucial periods for suspended sediment transport at the outlet were June and November/December (63% of the total). The analysis of suspended sediment transport dynamics observed during 236 flood events highlighted their intermittency and did not show any clear relationship between rainfall, discharge and SSC. The most efficient floods were characterised by counter-clockwise hysteresis relationships between SSC and discharges. The floods with complex hysteresis were the more productive in the long term, during this measuring period exceeding a decade. Nevertheless, the current research outlines the need to obtain medium-term (five years) continuous time series to assess the range of variations of suspended sediment fluxes and to outline clearly the seasonality of suspended sediment yields. Results suggest the occurrence of a temporal dis-connectivity in meso-scale catchments over short time-scales between the meteorological forcing and the sediment yields estimated at the outlet. Abstract The lower Amazon basin contains vast floodplains that exchange sediment with the main river. The exchange of sediment between the floodplain and the channel follows a seasonal cycle that is anticorrelated with the hydrological cycle. At low water stages, sediment that has been stored in the floodplain for potentially several thousands of years is eroded and transferred from the floodplain to the mainstem. During high water stages, most sediment transported in the main channel stems directly from the eroding source with little intermittent storage. We apply the meteoric cosmogenic 10Be to stable 9Be ratio (10Be/9Be) as a denudation and weathering proxy to investigate this seasonality in sediment transport. Single meteoric 10Be concentrations ([10Be]) have previously been shown to record floodplain storage; whereas fractions of mobilized 9Be, a trace metal released during weathering, provide degrees of weathering. The resulting 10Be/9Be ratio provides denudation rates of the sediment sources. We compare 10Be/9Be measured on suspended sediment from river depth profiles at two sites (Óbidos/Macapa) and during two hydrological seasons (high/low water stage in 2013). We show that careful construction of river depth profiles in combination with Rouse modeling is necessary to exclude the grain size dependence that together with hydrodynamic sorting introduces a bias into single [10Be] and [9Be]. In contrast, the 10Be/9Be is largely uniform across grain sizes and is thus unaffected by sorting. Our 10Be/9Be ratios, the denudation rates derived from them, and mobilized 9Be fractions do not show variations outside their uncertainties across seasons or sites. Thus, 10Be/9Be show that upstream sediment sources were well mixed by multiple cycles of storage and remobilization in the floodplain. Abstract The Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ) region in northern California is an archetype for studying landscape response to varying rock uplift rates as they increase toward the triple junction. Underpinning these studies lies the assumption that this landscape has reached a dynamic equilibrium in which rock uplift and erosion rates are equal; however, no study has shown that such an equilibrium actually exists around the MTJ region. Here, we report 10Be- and 26Al-derived erosion rates calculated from isotope concentrations in detrital, fluvial sediment from coastal drainage basins; we then compare these rates with uplift rates inferred from marine terraces that were formed and preserved by uplift during the last ∼305 ka. Erosion rates in the more slowly uplifting southern part of the region range from 0.21–0.32 mm/yr and are consistent with rock uplift rates since 305 ka. However, in the northern transition zone, where uplift rates apparently started to increase about ∼100 ka due to northward migration of the MTJ, erosion rates are higher, 0.43 to 0.69 mm/yr. These rates are similar to uplift rates from 96–305 ka, but substantially less than recent uplift rates of ∼3.5–4 mm/yr inferred for the past ∼72 ka. In the central part of the King Range, finite erosion rates cannot be determined due to (i) the presence of excess 10Be that does not appear to have originated from in-situ cosmic-ray production during erosion and transport of the sediment, and (ii) 26Al concentrations below detection limits. The difference between catchment-wide erosion and recent uplift rates in coastal catchments may be related to a lag in response of hillslopes and tributaries to changes in rates of tectonically-driven relative base-level fall or the uncertainties in rock uplift rates inferred from marine terraces. This study suggests that measurements of both erosion and uplift rates are crucial in assessing the equilibrium state of landscapes and in understanding the topographic features made by surface and tectonic processes. For wave energy to become a fully-fledged renewable and thus contribute to the much-needed decarbonisation of the energy mix, the effects of wave farms (arrays of wave energy converters) on coastal systems must be addressed. The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of wave farms on the longshore sediment transport and shoreline evolution of a gravel-dominated beach and, in particular, its sensitivity to the longshore position of the farm based on eight scenarios. Nearshore wave propagation patterns are computed by means of a spectral wave propagation model (SWAN), variations in sediment transport rates induced by the farm are calculated, and a one-line model is applied to determine the shoreline position and dry beach area. The significant wave height at breaking is reduced in the lee of the wave farm, dampening sediment transport. We find that changes in the dry beach area induced by the wave farm are highly sensitive to its alongshore position, and may result in: (i) erosion relative to the baseline scenario (without wave farm) in three of the eight scenarios, (ii) accretion in three other scenarios, and (iii) negligible effects in the remaining two. These results prove that the alongshore position of the wave farm controls the response of the beach to the extent that it may shift from accretionary to erosionary, and provide evidence of its effectiveness in countering erosion if appropriately positioned. This effectiveness opens up the possibility of using wave farms not only to generate carbon-free energy but also to manage coastal erosion, thus strengthening the case for the development of wave energy. In this paper, we examine the effect of vegetation on soil erosion, runoff generation and sediment transport on saline rangeland hillslopes. Rainfall simulations were conducted at a fixed 114 mm/h intensity on 6 m × 2 m erosion plots with varying degrees of vegetation. Plots were grouped into three categories (L, M and H) based on their canopy cover (L: <5%, M: 5–19%, H: >19%) and selected to limit variations in slope across canopy cover groups. Runoff and sediment samples were combined with three dimensional (3D) reconstruction data used to monitor soil surface microtopographic changes. Runoff initiation was significantly delayed on the L plots but cumulative runoff after 20 min of rainfall simulation indicated a positive effect of vegetation on infiltration processes. Cumulative sediment after 20 min of rainfall was similar across vegetation cover categories. The 3D data suggest that vegetation reduced net sediment delivery from the plots by primarily increasing opportunities for deposition while marginally affecting gross soil erosion. Plots with H vegetation cover experienced lower 3D-estimated erosion volumes but average erosion depth on L plots was lower than that on plots with M and H vegetation covers. Lower runoff volumes on M and H plots may have been compensated by greater runoff erosivity on these plots as runoff was concentrated in a narrower inter-patch space compared to L plots. Topographic relief and bedrock fractures caused by fault activity can accelerate surface erosion, suggesting that erosion rates increase with decreasing distance to the fault core. To test this hypothesis, we used 10Be cosmogenic nuclides to quantify catchment-wide erosion rates at various distances from a fault in the footwall of the Daqing Shan fault system, a 200-km-long active normal fault in Inner Mongolia, northern China. In addition, in order to examine the influence of topography and bedrock fractures on the surface erosion processes in the fault-weakened zone, their relationships with hillslope erosion, fluvial sediment grain size and transport efficiency, erosion rates, and erosion coefficients were studied. The resulting catchment-wide erosion rates ranged from 0.01 ± 0.00–0.13 ± 0.01 mm yr−1. These erosion rates and coefficients were unaffected by distance from the fault. The analysis of topography, bedrock fractures, and hillslope erosion yielded distinct hillslope erosion processes at different distances from the fault. Rapid mass wasting events, such as landslides, occurred at <15 km from the fault in steep, rocky hillslopes with abundant bedrock fractures. In contrast, at >15 km from the fault, hillslopes gradually become more gentle and soil-mantled. These spatial-slope configuration differences result in a decrease in sediment grain size delivered to river channels with increasing distance from the fault. Once sediments enter river channels, they impact fluvial transport capacity by influencing the initial motion threshold of sediment. Correlation analyses revealed that sediment transport efficiency in channels directly controls the catchment-averaged erosion rate and coefficient. • Contributions were quantified of bed erosion, confluence and emission to P transport. • An integrated model covering the flow-sediment-P transport was developed. • Impacts were studied of nonuniform sediment and riverbed coarsening on P transport. Phosphorus (P) transport plays a crucial role in the aquatic ecology of natural rivers. However, our understanding still remains unclear that how P transport is affected in a river-lake connected system downstream of a dam. This system usually undergoes both severe channel degradation and complex exchange of flow-sediment-phosphorus between the mainstem and tributaries. In the current study, a method was proposed firstly to determine the individual contribution of different sources to P recover based on the calculation of phosphorus budget; then an integrated model was developed, covering the modules of flow, nonuniform sediment and phosphorus transport. The application of the proposed method in the 955-km-long Middle Yangtze River (MYR) shows that the type of P transportation was predominantly changed from particulate phosphorus to dissolved phosphorus after the operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP), but a significant longitudinal recovery of total phosphorus (TP) flux was observed. The TP flux exporting from the MYR was mainly from the Upper Yangtze River (44%), and 12%, 18% and 26% of that were originated from channel erosion, tributary confluence and anthropogenic emission. Moreover, the effects were investigated of nonuniform sediment transport and bed-material coarsening on P transport in the MYR, based on the proposed integrated model. Obtained results show that the TP transport process in the MYR was more reasonable simulated using the nonuniform sediment mode, and it is also confirmed that the process of bed-material coarsening after the TGP operation would lead to the decrease of particulate phosphorus flux in the MYR. Climate change is affecting the hydromorphological system. In many places, changes in sediment dynamics are closely correlated to changes in precipitation frequency and magnitude. However, in nivo-pluvial regimes, the hydromorphological response to climate is more challenging to predict as it is not only the amount and occurrence of precipitation that is changing. The changes in precipitation type (i.e., snow or rain), snow accumulation, and snowmelt rates will also have a significant effect on the catchment net precipitation (composed of direct precipitation plus snowmelt contribution), and this may affect overland flow, erosion, stream discharge, sediment transport, and deposition. We investigated the impacts of climate change on hydrology and geomorphology in a small catchment (Emme, 127 km2) located in the Swiss pre-Alps by simulating the difference between the hydromorphological response to net precipitation in the present climate and in three climate scenarios at the end of the century using the CAESAR-Lisflood landscape evolution model. For the most extreme climate scenario (RCP8.5), simulations showed that despite the reduction in net precipitation (by 7 %) and discharge (by 4 %), sediment yield at the outlet of the catchment increased by 6 %. This is not only because precipitation falls more as rain than snow during the cold months, but also because heavy precipitation is expected to intensify. On a seasonal scale, we found that the amount of net precipitation, discharge, and erosion will increase in winter at the end of the century, while it will decrease in spring. In all three climate scenarios, net precipitation is projected to decrease in summer, but sediment yields may both decrease or increase. Autumn is the season with the greatest changes in erosion, while net precipitation remains constant or only slightly increases. Furthermore, we found that erosion and deposition patterns are changing spatially, with more erosion in mid-elevations and more deposition in valleys. Seas surround Turkey for three quarters, and coastal regions constitute important areas of agriculture, tourism, industry, logistics and living for Turkey. Although the economic value of coastlines is increasing day by day with the increase in population, artificial and natural factors such as incorrectly designed coastal structures (ports, fishing shelters, breakwaters, groins, etc.), climate change, tides etc., cause increased or decreased sediment transport and the coasts become more unstable. Significant changes in the shoreline separating the sea and the coast (erosion and deposition) occurs. Considering the benefit of estimating the direction of the change in the shoreline, this important research gap needed to be filled. Within the scope of this study, the effective wave direction was determined by making wind and wave climate analyses in the selected coastal area in the Karasu District of Sakarya province in Turkey and the changes in the shoreline that occurred in this area over the years. Therefore, the effects of these changes were examined in the light of field studies, satellite images and data obtained from state institutions and organisations between 2003 and 2021. This research presents a new numerical model based on the Preissmann Schema Technique and the finite difference method, which differs from the existing numerical models. This model has some advantages, such as easy adaptation to non-uniform networks, control stability using weighting factor, convergence and calculation based on all variables. The Numerical Model of Shoreline Change Based on the Preissmann Scheme Technique (COPREM-2D) has been developed to predict shoreline changes. • High-turbidity events are triggered by wind waves with wind speeds of > 7 m s−1. • Sediment erosion and deposition are synchronous during HTEs. • Synchronism causes a near-lakebed turbid water layer and sustains the lutocline. High-turbidity events (HTEs) frequently occur in shallow lakes and can deeply influence lake ecosystems. However, the processes of sediment erosion and deposition are not fully understood. To investigate these processes, two investigative campaigns that integrate bed sediment measurements, sediment settling experiments, in-situ observations, or a hydrodynamics-sediment model were conducted to quantitatively study wind-induced HTEs in Lake Taihu, China. Cohesive sediments were massively entrained from the lakebed by wind waves when the wind speed exceeded its critical value of 7 m s−1, as estimated by water depth, triggering HTEs with turbidity waves of > 100 nephelometric turbidity units. The suspended sediment concentration was the net sediment flux of erosion (average: 5.9 mg m−2 s−1) and deposition (average: 5.5 mg m−2 s−1), which occurred synchronously for most of the HTEs and resulted in high temporal variation in suspended sediment concentration. This synchronism was determined by the critical erosional stress of lakebed sediments, which was spatially heterogeneous (0.017–0.055 N m−2) in a large lake. Equations for erosion and deposition processes were derived following the investigative campaigns and used to develop a cohesive sediment transport model for simulating HTEs in Lake Taihu. Simulations indicate that the synchronism of sediment erosion and deposition led to a near-lakebed turbid water layer during an HTE, which sustained the sediment lutocline in Lake Taihu. • CA models for describing runoff are established based on three water distribution rules which significantly impact on confluence. • Dynamic erosion CA models are built by distinguish inter-rill, rill and gully erosions based on critical water depths. • CA models excellently reproduce the runoff and erosion in both the hillslope with rills and the watershed with gullies. • Remain average multi-flow directions algorithm performs the best in runoff and erosion predictions. Rainfall erosion has been calculated and predicted by various soil loss equations, but the progressions of overland flow and sediment transport are less dynamically described. In this study, cellular automata (CA) models based on single flow direction algorithm (SFD), average value multi-flow direction algorithm (AMFD) and remaining average value multi-flow direction algorithm (RAMFD) were constructed. Simultaneously, erosion model was constructed by dividing soil erosion into inter-rill, rill and gully erosions according to critical water depth. The CA models were validated at three scales: a theoretical slope, an in-situ model slope and the natural basin. The results demonstrated the efficient performance of RAMFD in the runoff ascension and recession stages while SFD and AMFD presented unconcentrated runoff distribution, especially in the in-situ slope and basin simulation. Besides, RAMFD model occurred sediment deposition in the basin upstream while SFD and AMFD presented continuous erosion. Furthermore, the runoff Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of three models were 0.85 ∼ 0.95 and 0.65 ∼ 0.94, and the erosion root mean square error (RMSE) were 0.5 ∼ 1.0 kg/min and 0.3 ∼ 0.45 102kg/min in the theoretical slope and natural basin, respectively. Meanwhile, the NSE and RMSE values of RAMFD exhibited the best performance, indicating that this model effectively balanced water distribution while controlling the flow direction to a greater extent. Overall, it is justified to develop an erosion prediction model based on the classification of erosion types, and the rules governing water flow allocation will inevitably result in qualitative and quantitative differences of runoff and erosion. Training walls to improve navigability at river mouths alter natural sediment transport regimes, occasioning morphological changes in the nearby littoral zone. In addition, harbor channels and shorelines are susceptible to on-going changes in global circulation conditions and large-scale engineering interventions. Here we present a process-based modeling approach to determine the relationship between spatial patterns of erosion and deposition, seasonal river discharge, and the geometry of coastal defenses. The study uses the Magdalena River delta as an example, where the redistribution of freshwater and sediments after the construction of the "Tajamar" training wall heralded significant morphological changes in the area. The numerical experiments are used to describe how the erosion and deposition patterns within the estuary and delta of the Magdalena River are linked to the seasonal cycle of the Magdalena River and to the geometry of the hard structures. We demonstrate that the construction of the Tajamar and complementary hard structures would have decreased depositional fluxes in the littoral zone, leading to the observed shoreline retreat and disappearance of an extensive coastal lagoon system. It is shown that an aperture in the training walls may help restore the wetlands without compromising navigability. Computer-based coupled soilscape-landform evolution models provide an avenue for estimating the erosion potential of a landform over geological timescales. They also provide tools to understand soil-landform relationships in the context of both field and modelled pedogenesis processes. In this study, we used the State Space Soil Production and Assessment Model (SSSPAM) and CAESAR-Lisflood landform evolution model to simulate the evolution of a natural catchment where soil erosion rates have been closely monitored over the last 20 years. Both models predict comparable erosion rates to that of field measurements and produce similar catchment scale geomorphological patterns. Rock content data measured in the field along two transects were compared with SSSPAM simulations at the same representative points. The results showed that SSSPAM produced similar rock content variation along the respective transects. The findings demonstrate 'SSSPAM's ability to predict catchment scale erosion and surface soil distribution. The insights demonstrated here provide confidence in the SSSPAM model for Soilscape predictions for natural, agricultural and post-mining landform assessment. Subaqueous slopes of many actively prograding deltas are heavily modified by widespread submarine sediment failures, forming highly complex geomorphic features that undergo continuous evolution even over short time scales. However, the effects of wave-seabed interactions (especially liquefaction) on the evolution of seabed sediment failures are rarely studied. Here, we use side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profilers, multibeam bathymetry, and in situ and laboratory geotechnical tests to map the bottom morphology and sediment structure of the Yellow River subaqueous delta. Our results indicate that: 1) The morphology along the Yellow River subaqueous delta is highly complex and can be categorized as a moderately disturbed area and heavily disturbed area; 2) Heavily disturbed area shows notable lines of evidences of liquefication-related sediment failure and four separate morphological zones (Zones 1–4). Zone 1 consists of differently sized sediment highs, which considered to be scarp or monadnock features. Zone 2 undulates with widely distributed tabular sediment blocks, gullies, and small-scale seafloor irregularities. Zone 3 is characterized by irregular, elongate sediment ridges. Finally, Zone 4 is characterized by relatively flat terrain with some localized highs; 3) Sub-bottom profiles used to visualize failure features in Zone 1 show acoustically continuous high-amplitude parallel or subparallel reflection, and the geomorphic features in this area are mainly caused by erosion. In comparison, Zones 2, 3 and 4 lack internal structures and display chaotic/disturbed signatures in corresponding sub-bottom data, which might be an indication of liquefaction; and 4) A combination of preconditioning and triggering factors lead to sediment failures and the complex morphological features in this area; however, silt liquefaction under storm conditions is the most important controlling factor. Based on this evidence, we propose formation mechanism for the liquefaction-related sediment failure features in this area. Sediment liquefaction forms an initial depression and gully when fine particles are resuspended along the arc-shaped liquefaction boundary as sediment vents and re-solidification of the liquefied sediment leads to a stiffer bed. Gullies are then widened and deepened by the predominant currents, and the disturbed depressions develop into elongated highs because of the denser structure and higher strength following liquefaction. While disturbed by engineering activities, the sediment highs become fragmented due to intense localized erosion, having the potential for downslope transport and the formation of sediment ridges. Western Port is a large tide-dominated embayment located 75 km east of Melbourne, Victoria that is flanked by a rapidly growing population, significant industrial infrastructure, grazing lands and protected RAMSAR habitats. Remarkably little is known about the sediment dynamics of Western Port despite concerning rates of erosion of the swamp and floodplain deposits including cohesive clay cliffs that fringe the sunkland. As in other tide-dominated systems, sediment dynamics in Western Port are complicated by strong tidal currents, multiple sediment sources and complex circulation. We applied the coastal sediment cell framework to Western Port, in conjunction with high resolution satellite derived rates of coastal change to elucidate sediment sharing among the sub-embayment beaches. Using end member modelling of 20 sediment assemblages based on elemental and mineralogical composition we robustly identified seven end members that correspond to different point and diffuse provenances. Hierarchical clustering of the 20 beaches dispersed across the bay yielded nine coastal cells, delimited by headlands, deep water channels, estuaries or disruptive infrastructure. Analysis of shoreline change within the cells suggests most cells are neutrally or positively balanced but a northward movement of sediments is leading to rotation. The deep channels provide a pathway for Bass Strait sediments to bypass the embayment headlands and tidal currents enable cross shore exchange with the channels beyond wave derived closure depth in some locations. Understanding the sediment cell boundaries and direction of sediment transport can assist with the management of erosion hotspots; the novel approach applied here can resolve complex connected coastal systems such as estuaries and embayments. • Combined datasets used to backtrack sediment transport processes in a tide dominated bay. • We identified multiple self-contained sediment cells within the embayment. • Transport is in the direction of time-integrated wind balance, causing in-cell beach rotation. • Headland bypassing facilitated through deep channel and strong tidal currents. • Despite local subsidence and sea level rise, shorelines are, on average, prograding. However, how sediment sizes and transport patterns response to original soils over a wide range of structural stability remains unclear. Herein, field plot rainfall simulation experiments on five soils along an increased gradient of structural stability were conducted at two rainfall intensities of 45 and 90 mm h−1 to investigate effective sediment size characteristics and associated transport patterns in sheet erosion. Differing from runoff and sediment yield, sediment sizes were most influenced by soil structural stability (F = 386.9) rather than rainfall intensity (F = 246.7, p < 0.001). Mean weight diameter of sediment (0.16–0.84 mm) and the proportion of coarse particles (>0.25 mm) exhibited a unimodal variation with increased soil structural stability. The effective sediment size distribution shifted from unimodal with the peak at < 0.10 mm for low and high stable soils to bimodal with two peaks at < 0.10 mm and 0.5–1 mm for medium stable soils. Correspondingly, suspension-saltation (>74 %) dominated sediment transport for low and high stable soils, which was determined by fine sized fragments from aggregate breakdown and small flow transport capacity, respectively; while both suspension-saltation (<0.10 mm) and rolling (>0.25 mm) jointly contributed to sediment transport for medium stable soils, which was controlled by the interaction between fragment size and flow transport capacity. Moreover, the positive effect of rainfall intensity on sediment sizes was more remarkable for the medium than for the low and high stable soils. A conceptual model of sediment transport mechanisms in response to soil structural stability is firstly proposed, which merits consideration in the future development of erosion modeling and soil conservation techniques. Submarine canyons are key elements in source-to-sink systems that are commonly developed along continental margins. They act as major conduits transferring sediment and pollutants from continental shelves to deep-water basins, and control the general morphology and evolution of continental margins. This work uses multibeam bathymetric and high-resolution (two- and three-dimensional) seismic data to investigate the main factors controlling the morphology of the Shenhu Canyon System in the northern South China Sea, as well as its detailed morphological character. The Shenhu Canyon System consists of nineteen (19) submarine canyons whose morphologies vary from southwest to northeast along the continental slope. Canyons (C1–C10) in the southwest show greater incision depths, and steeper thalwegs and walls, when compared to their counterparts to the northeast (C11–C17). The southwest canyons are located close to the shelf edge, where the upper continental slope is relatively steep and multiple landslides are imaged. We show that the thalwegs and walls of the southwest canyons were more actively eroded by sediment flows, with respect to the northeast canyons, making them deeper and steeper. Hence, submarine canyons in the southwest, with a more linear geometry, are now directly connected to the Pearl River Canyon. In parallel, seafloor fault scarps act as barriers for sediment transported to the heads of the northeast canyons. This research highlights how sediment supply, sediment pathways, and seafloor scarps can influence submarine canyon morphology along continental slopes. Prescribed fire is a common management practice in Mediterranean region to reduce the amount of fuel and to decrease the wildfire risk. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of a prescribed fire on some soil properties, hydrological response and vegetation recovery in experimental plots 5 years after. The results showed that: i) with the exception of electrical conductivity, the prescribed fire did not affect the analyzed soil properties, and ii) overland flow and sediment transport were increased during the first two years, returning to levels pre-fire, 5 years post-fire. The rainfall threshold for overland flow generation was lower during the following months after the prescribed fire owing to the depletion of the vegetation cover. Immediately after the fire, the vegetation cover was of 1.9%, being the three main soil surface components that dominated the hydrological response: charcoal and decayed wood; blackish and greyish ash, and bare soil. However, these areas decreased very rapidly during the second year following the fire, principally, owing to the regrowth of herbaceous plants and shrubs. In addition, the vegetation cover in burned plots was 16.1% higher than that measured in the unburned ones. Velocity-skewed oscillatory sheet flow transport is studied by an approximate model for instantaneous sediment transport resulting from exponential profiles of sediment concentration and velocity over a mobile bed. The phase lag effect, and asymmetry in wave friction factor, oscillatory flow orbital amplitude, roughness height, bed shear stress and wave boundary layer thickness are modelled so that the net boundary layer stream of pure velocity-skewed oscillatory flow can be obtained. The proposed model is found consistent with the previous classical formulas, and qualitatively refines a series of exponents of velocity power function for the approximation of instantaneous sediment transport rate under different flow conditions. The sediment fluxes can be well predicted with accuracy as that of a two-phase numerical model. The net boundary layer stream and sediment transport rates are also well predicted, especially the negative net stream and rates with large phase residual. The phase residual is shown a useful but insufficient factor in the net sediment transport in pure velocity-skewed flows. In addition, the net boundary layer stream resulting from velocity-skewed wave boundary layer development difference between onshore and offshore flow durations is an essential factor as well. The effects of climate change on sediment yield and transport dynamics in cold climate regions are not well understood or reported. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been built-up, calibrated, and validated against streamflow and sediment load at several monitoring stations in a cold climate region watershed - the Athabasca River Basin (ARB) in Alberta, Canada. The model was then fed with bias-corrected spatial disaggregated high-resolution (~ 10 km) future climate data from three climate models for two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5), and two periods (mid- and end-century). Results show that channel erosion and deposition are the dominant processes over hill slope erosion in the basin. On average, a predicted warmer and wetter future climate has both synergetic and offsetting effects on sediment yield. Changes are sub-region specific and land-use type dependent, thus reflecting a marked spatial and temporal heterogeneity within the basin. Increases on sediment yield in future periods in the agricultural areas are up to 0.94 t/ha/yr, and are greater than reported soil formation rates in the region. Similarly, while substantial increases (by more than two fold) in the sediment load transport through the river reaches were obtained, the changes show both temporal and spatial variability, and are closely aligned with the trend of stream flows. We believe that availability of such models and knowledge of the effect of future climatic conditions would help water managers formulate appropriate scenarios to manage such basins in a holistic way. However, significant uncertainties in future sediment yield and transport, as a result of variations in climatic forcing of different climate models, need to be considered in any adaptation measures. Sediment connectivity has been shown in recent years to explain how the watershed configuration controls sediment transport. However, we find no studies develop a watershed erosion modeling framework based on sediment connectivity, and few, if any, studies have quantified sediment connectivity for gently rolling systems. We develop a new predictive sediment connectivity model that relies on the intersecting probabilities for sediment supply, detachment, transport, and buffers to sediment transport, which is integrated in a watershed erosion model framework. The model predicts sediment flux temporally and spatially across a watershed using field reconnaissance results, a high-resolution digital elevation models, a hydrologic model, and shear-based erosion formulae. Model results validate the capability of the model to predict erosion pathways causing sediment connectivity. More notably, disconnectivity dominates the gently rolling watershed across all morphologic levels of the uplands, including, microtopography from low energy undulating surfaces across the landscape, swales and gullies only active in the highest events, karst sinkholes that disconnect drainage areas, and floodplains that de-couple the hillslopes from the stream corridor. Results show that sediment connectivity is predicted for about 2% or more the watershed’s area 37 days of the year, with the remaining days showing very little or no connectivity. Only 12.8 ± 0.7% of the gently rolling watershed shows sediment connectivity on the wettest day of the study year. Results also highlight the importance of urban/suburban sediment pathways in gently rolling watersheds, and dynamic and longitudinal distributions of sediment connectivity might be further investigated in future work. We suggest the method herein provides the modeler with an added tool to account for sediment transport criteria and has the potential to reduce computational costs in watershed erosion modeling. Examination of large scale, alluvial estuarine morphology and associated time evolution is of particular importance regarding management of channel navigability, ecosystem, etc. In this work, we analyze morphological evolution and changes of the channel-shoal system in the Changjiang Estuary, a river- and tide-controlled coastal plain estuary, based on bathymetric data between 1958 and 2016. We see that its channel-shoal pattern is featured by meandering and bifurcated channels persisting over decades. In the vertical direction, hypsometry curves show that the sand bars and shoals are continuously accreted while the deep channels are eroded, leading to narrower and deeper estuarine channels. Intensive human activities in terms of reclamation, embankment, and dredging play a profound role in controlling the decadal morphological evolution by stabilizing coastlines and narrowing channels. Even though, the present Changjiang Estuary is still a pretty wide and shallow system with channel width-to-depth ratios >1000, much larger than usual fluvial rivers and small estuaries. In-depth analysis suggests that the Changjiang Estuary as a whole exhibited an overall deposition trend over 59 years, i.e., a net deposition volume of 8.3 × 10 8  m 3 . Spatially, the pan-South Branch was net eroded by 9.7 × 10 8  m 3 whereas the mouth bar zone was net deposited by 18 × 10 8  m 3 , suggesting that the mouth bar zone is a major sediment sink. Over time there is no directional deposition or erosion trend in the interval though riverine sediment supply has decreased by 2/3 since the mid-1980s. We infer that the pan-South Branch is more fluvial-controlled therefore its morphology responds to riverine sediment load reduction fast while the mouth bar zone is more controlled by both river and tides that its morphological response lags to riverine sediment supply changes at a time scale >10 years, which is an issue largely ignored in previous studies. We argue that the time lag effect needs particular consideration in projecting future estuarine morphological changes under a low sediment supply regime and sea-level rise. Underneath rock slopes of rubble mound structures often one or more granular filter layers are present. These filter layers prevent base material washout. In contrast to traditional filters, geometrically open filters allow for some movement of base material. In order to design such open filters the amount of erosion and accretion of base material needs to be predicted. Based on 2D physical model tests Van Gent and Wolters (2015) presented a method to estimate the erosion and accretion of sand underneath rock slopes. Since the developed method was only valid for perpendicular wave attack, a new study has been performed to assess effects of oblique wave attack on the amount of erosion and accretion of sand underneath a rock slope. For that purpose 3D physical model tests were performed in a wave basin with 5 different wave angle between 0° (perpendicular wave attack) and 75°. Based on the test results it was shown how the effects of wave obliquity can be taken into account in the design of open filters. In addition, the effect of the storm duration on open filters has been studied. Lateral inputs from hillslopes and tributaries exert a variable impact upon the longitudinal connectivity of sediment transfer in river systems with differing drainage network configurations. Network topology influences channel slope and confinement at confluence zones, thereby affecting patterns of sediment storage and the conveyance of sediments through catchments. Rates of disturbance response, patterns of sediment propagation, and the implications for connectivity and recovery were assessed in two neighbouring catchments with differing network configurations on the East Cape of New Zealand. Both catchments were subject to forest clearing in the late 1940s and a major cyclonic storm in 1988. However, reconstruction of landslide runout pathways, and characterization of connectivity using a Tokunaga framework, demonstrates different patterns and rates of sediment transfer and storage in a dendritic network relative to a more elongate, herringbone drainage network. The dendritic network has a higher rate of sediment transfer between storage sites in successive Strahler orders, whereas longitudinal connectivity along the fourth-order mainstem is disrupted by lateral sediment inputs from multiple low-order tributaries in the more elongate, herringbone network. At present, accelerated coastal erosion due to anthropogenic pressure is prevalent. Standard defence techniques to combat erosion include hard/soft protection measures (hold/advance the line), accommodation, managed retreat and sacrifice. To these conventional coastal management practices, is added a further new end point – intervention with respect to the causes, which necessitates further management action. Managed retreat and sacrifice areas are becoming increasingly popular options, which involve the input of communities and many global examples are given of comparative studies geared to combating erosion - including management theory. In particular setback lines and shoreline management plans are emphasised and coastal erosion management policy decisions for the UK are discussed in detail, as well as examples taken on a global basis. The 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami caused severe morphological changes along the affected coastline on the northeast part of Japan. This study investigates the recovery of river mouths and breaching of sandy coast at the place used to be river mouth in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan after severe erosion induced by the tsunami through analyzing aerial photograph and investigating field data. After several years since the tsunami took place, the morphology of some river mouths has mostly recovered while others still have some damage. Results on the analysis of aerial photograph clearly indicate that the total length of sandy coast on both sides of river mouth plays important role in the recovery process. Moreover, the relevant phenomenon occurring during the morphological recovery process is also investigated. The findings demonstrated the intrusion of sand spit into river mouths due to the tsunami having scoured river mouth deeper than the depth of closure. Interestingly, the intrusion distance was found to be positively correlated with the width of river mouth. In addition, there is an important finding on the practical problem which is related to the intrusion upstream of sand spit. That intrusion shifts the boundary of fresh-sea water upstream, therefore external wave forces must be considered when implementing the design of river structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relation among estuarine processes, mixing mechanisms and turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) formation was evaluated in a microtidal tropical estuary of high fluvial discharge (Magdalena River, northwestern South America). Particularly, assessing the effects of vertical stratification over mixing, estuarine circulation and suspended sediment transport processes. Measurements of salinity, temperature, density, currents and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) were performed at the Magdalena river mouth during high and low streamflows to distinguish among two contrasting seasonal conditions (flow conditions, wind patterns, wave energy). Salinity, temperature, density and location of the freshwater-saltwater interface (FSI) exhibited a sharp seasonal variability. The river mouth and delta front were stratified regardless of the hydrologic season, whereas the riverine section was stratified during the low streamflow season, reflecting the balance between fluvial advection and vertical stratification. Reduction of the vertical mixing led to a more clearly defined and extended stratification. Bottom friction is the main mixing mechanism, but as stratification is strengthened along the river mouth, the vertical mixing weakens, promoting the developing of TMZ (SSC >4500 mg l −1 ). Our results indicate that TMZ developing is caused by the convergence of stratified layers near the nodal point and the weakening of bottom turbulence by stratification. Although the TMZ exhibited a strong seasonal variation in its magnitude and extent, it usually formed in the convergence front demarcated by saltwater intrusion. Streamflow is the major influence on the TMZ formation since it allows the development of stratified conditions, which weaken turbulent mixing, and thus promotes particulate matter settling. The Magdalena River estuary can be classified as turbid (4000 mg l −1  < SSC max  < 10,000 mg l −1 ) and extremely turbid during low streamflow seasons (SSC max  > 10,000 mg l −1 ). Mega-nourishments, aiming at providing long-term coastal safety, nature qualities and recreational space, have been applied recently at the Holland coast and are considered at various other places in the world. Methods to quickly evaluate the potential and lifetime of these coastal mega nourishments are therefore very much desired, which is the main objective of this research. Two types of mega nourishments can be distinguished: feeder-type mega nourishments may erode freely to feed adjacent coasts for a more natural, dynamic dune growth while permanent mega-nourishments are designed to preserve safety levels and need to maintain their size and shape and thus needs to be nourished themselves. The design and impact assessment studies for both types of mega nourishments require detailed morphological studies to determine the morphological evolution. In this paper 2DH (Delft3D) and 1D (UNIBEST-CL+ and LONGMOR) numerical models were calibrated using data of the Sand Motor mega-nourishment and were then applied to model a series of mega-nourishments with various width over length ratios and volumes in order to derive relations and design graphs for erosion rates, life span and maintenance volumes. These relations and design graphs can be used in project initiation phases and feasibility studies. The magnitude of the modelled wave-driven longshore sediment transport rates in 1D coastline models depend on the representation of wave refraction on the lower shoreface, since a distinction should be made between the non-rotating lower shoreface and active surfzone. The process of tree uprooting plays an important role in sediment transport within forested slopes. In this study we determine the intensity of sediment transport by uprooting and its dependencies. We use the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine the most important factors influencing root plate sizes, and we calculate sediment flux by windthrow for the area of the Tatra National Park (211.6 km 2 ), for the year 2013, when an extreme windthrow event occurred. For this purpose we combine field data with the results of windthrow areas mapping based on satellite imagery. We also use data recorded by the Tatra National Park concerning the amount of destroyed wood in the forests of the Tatra National Park to calculate sediment flux by windthrow for the period between 1968 and 2015 (48 years). To calculate the transport distance by the uprooting needed to compute sediment flux, we modified the Gabet et al.'s (2003) Eq. (11), which in our opinion gives results which are twice the actual size. The PCA identified two the most important factors influencing root plate sizes. The first factor shows that all root plate dimensions increase with increasing tree DBH (diameter at breast height), and, to a lesser degree, with an increase in the content of coarse material. The second factor shows that the depth of a root plate increases with the downslope angle of tree fall, decreasing slope inclination, and decreasing the content of coarse material. The sediment flux by windthrow in 2013 in the area of the Tatra National Park was 3.55 × 10 − 4 m 3 m − 1 yr − 1 . Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are being used in many products as they have unique antimicrobial-biocidal properties. After disposal of these products AgNPs can reach the soil environment possibly affecting soil organisms and disrupting plants. This work aimed to study the transport of AgNPs by water and sediment during overland flow and soil erosion. This was done in a laboratory setting, using a flume and rainfall simulator. A low concentration of AgNPs (50 μg·kg − 1 ) was applied to two soil-flumes with slope percentages of 20% and 10%. The rainfall was applied in four events of 15 min each with a total amount of rainfall of 15 mm during each event. After applying the rainfall, samples of the non-transported background soil (BS) and the transported sediment (Sf) were collected from the flume surface. Runoff sediment (RS) and water (RW) were collected from the outlet. AgNPs were detected in all samples collected. However, concentration varied according to sample type (soil or water), time of collection (for runoff water and sediment) and the slope of the soil flume. Higher concentrations of AgNPs in soil were detected in the BS than in the Sf likely due to the BS having more fine particles (silt and clay). The AgNPs concentration in the runoff sediments increased with subsequent applied rain events. In addition, increasing the slope of the flume from 10% to 20% increased the total AgNPs transported with the runoff sediment by a factor 1.5. Efficient mitigation of environmental loads from agricultural fields to surface waters requires sufficient knowledge of dominating erosion processes and sediment transport pathways. Computational models are often applied in sediment load assessments but their structure inherently includes assumptions and uncertainties, which can hinder their predictive and explanatory capabilities. In this study, a 3D dual-permeability model was applied with field-scale data from a high-latitude site to investigate sediment balances and structural uncertainties in sediment transport components. The two-year data encompassed hourly records of water flow and sediment concentration composite samples from tillage layer runoff and drain discharge in two adjacent clayey fields with different slopes (1% and 5%). Three model structures with different assumptions of sediment transport pathways were built to test their performance against the data. The simulations demonstrated how different model structures can reproduce the data with varying results on sediment balance. The varying results revealed the importance of flow, erosion, and sediment transport observations from the fields to improve the simulations. Structural uncertainty analysis revealed uncertainties which parameter sensitivity analysis could not describe. Concentration data was shown to include more information about erosion and sediment transport processes than solely the load data. The results suggest that a major part (48–69%) of the detached particles remained in the field and that lateral subsurface transport contributed to load generation (10–21% of total loads) especially in the steeper field. The results demonstrated that the majority (84–87%) of sediment loads occurred via subsurface drain discharge and groundwater outflow with the slope gradient of 1–5%, which suggests that load mitigation measures should also be directed to decrease loads via subsurface transport pathways. Posidonia oceanica plays a significant role in the stabilization and protection of the coast in Gulf of Giens. Unfortunately, its distribution has been declining remarkably due to both anthropogenic interventions and natural factors. The present study focuses on the numerical simulation of the presence of Posidonia as well as the influence of its disappearance on hydrodynamics and sediment transport along Alamanarre beach. The model results indicate that the regression of Posidonia leads to significant changes of the hydrodynamic parameters, sedimentation rates, and causes severe erosion along Almanarre beach. In the annual wind conditions, the mean current speed is increased by 50.38%–80.65%, the mean significant wave height increased by 14.03%–16.58%, and the total load of sediment increased by 252%–426%, in absence of Posidonia. Regarding the seasonal wind variation, the disappearance of Posidonia induces an increase of the mean current speed about 52.86%–58.34%, the mean significant wave height by 8.23%–11.27%, and sediment transport rate by 358.99%–394.53%. Under the impact of extreme events with the disappearance of Posidonia, the mean current speed, the mean significant wave height, and the sediment transport rate increase by 12.53%–58.48%, 23.91%–34.67%, and 65.15%–154.62%, respectively. Coastal erosion is a serious problem of concern along the southwest (SW) coast of India. Various coastal protection measures have been applied for the recovery of the coast, but the devastating effect of erosion still continues. The present study focuses on a coastal stretch situated on the southern sector of the SW coast of India, where Sundar and Sannasiraj (2006) proposed a groyne field along with an existing seawall to control severe erosion. In order to confirm the net littoral drift of this region and for a preliminary assessment of the performance of the groynes prior to construction of the proposed groyne field, two groynes were initially constructed as a pilot program in 2008-09. Periodic monitoring of shoreline position with the two groynes in place was carried out during 2009-14. A shoreline evolution model for the study region was setup, calibrated, and validated using field observations during 2010-11. In addition to traditional shoreline evolution modelling procedures, a profile simulation model was applied for simulating the shoreline behaviour during extreme monsoon seasons. The validated LITPACK model has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed groyne field in controlling erosion, and the study also considered testing a modified transitional groyne field proposed as an alternative solution to the existing problem, and the modified transitional groyne field was found to be more effective than the prior design. A beach is expected to develop about 30–50 m within the groyne cells during the fair season which enhances the possibility of retaining a minimum beach width of 10 m during monsoon periods. Reservoirs behind dams act as deposition sites for much of the sediment being transported by rivers. As a result, the downstream river flow can be well below the transport capacity for bed-material. This promotes bed erosion and other geomorphic changes over some length of river located immediately downstream from a dam. These adjustments have been characterized for the Trinity River, TX, downstream of Livingston Dam. Field measurements and results from a 1D numerical model define a 50–60 river kilometer segment of river undergoing bed erosion as the transport capacity for bed material is reestablished. Consequences of this erosion include lowering of the channel bed, reduction in the sediment volume of channel bars, coarsening of sediment on bar tops, steepening of channel banks, and reduction in lateral migration rates of river bends. Repeat surveys of the river long profile reveals that 40 yr of dam closure has produced up to seven meters of channel-bottom incision downstream of the dam, transforming an initially linear profile into a convex-up long profile. The model output matches this observed change, providing confidence that calculated estimates for spatial and temporal changes in bed-material sediment flux can be used to explore the long-term signature of dam influence on the geomorphology of a sand-bed channel. Measurements of channel geometry, profile, lateral migration, and grain size of the lower Trinity River with distance downstream define both the trend and expected variability about the trend associated with the disruption to the bed-material load. This study is the first to simultaneously compare flow and sediment transport through a blowout and over an adjacent foredune, and the first study of flow within a highly sinuous, slot and cauldron blowout. Flow across the foredune transect is similar to that observed in other studies and is primarily modulated by across-dune vegetation density differences. Flow within the blowout is highly complex and exhibits pronounced accelerations and jet flow. It is characterised by marked helicoidal coherent vortices in the mid-regions, and topographically vertically forced flow out of the cauldron portion of the blowout. Instantaneous sediment transport within the blowout is significant compared to transport onto and/or over the adjacent foredune stoss slope and ridge, with the blowout providing a conduit for suspended sediment to reach the downwind foredune upper stoss slope and crest. Medium term (4 months) aeolian sedimentation data indicates sand is accumulating in the blowout entrance while erosion is taking place throughout the majority of the slot, and deposition is occurring downwind of the cauldron on the foredune ridge. The adjacent lower stoss slope of the foredune is accreting while the upper stoss slope is slightly erosional. Longer term (16 months) pot trap data shows that the majority of foredune upper stoss slope and crest accretion occurs via suspended sediment delivery from the blowout, whereas the majority of the suspended sediment arriving to the well-vegetated foredune stoss slope is deposited on the mid-stoss slope. The results of this study indicate one mechanism of how marked alongshore foredune morphological variability evolves due to the role of blowouts in topographically accelerating flow, and delivering significant aeolian sediment downwind to relatively discrete sections of the foredune.
