Background: There has been a significant surge in animal studies of stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) therapy for the treatment of premature ovarian failure (POF) but its efficacy remains unknown and a comprehensive and up-to-date meta-analysis is lacking. Before clinical translation, it is crucial to thoroughly understand the overall impact of stem cell-derived EVs on POF. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science were searched up to February 18, 2024. The risk of bias was evaluated according to Cochrane Handbook criteria, while quality of evidence was assessed using the SYRCLE system. The PRISMA guidance was followed. Trial sequential analysis was conducted to assess outcomes, and sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis were performed using Stata 14. Results: Data from 25 studies involving 339 animals were extracted and analyzed. The analysis revealed significant findings: stem cell-derived EVs increase ovary weight (SMD = 3.88; 95% CI: 2.50 ~ 5.25; P < 0.00001; I2 = 70%), pregnancy rate (RR = 3.88; 95% CI: 1.94 ~ 7.79; P = 0.0001; I2 = 0%), count of births (SMD = 2.17; 95% CI: 1.31 ~ 3.04; P < 0.00001; I2 = 69%) and counts of different types of follicles. In addition, it elevates the level of AMH (SMD = 4.15; 95% CI: 2.75 ~ 5.54; P < 0.00001; I2 = 88%) and E2 (SMD = 2.88; 95% CI: 2.02 ~ 3.73; P < 0.00001; I2 = 80%) expression, while reducing FSH expression (SMD = -5.05; 95% CI: -6.60 ~ -3.50; P < 0.00001; I2 = 90%). Subgroup analysis indicates that the source of EVs, animal species, modeling method, administration route, and test timepoint affected efficacy. Trial sequential analysis showed that there was sufficient evidence to confirm the effects of stem cell-derived EVs on birth counts, ovarian weights, and follicle counts. However, the impact of stem cell-derived EVs on pregnancy rates needs to be further demonstrated through more animal experimental evidence. Conclusions: Stem cell-derived EVs demonstrate safety and efficacy in treating POF animal models, with potential improvements in fertility outcomes. Background: Insulin resistance (IR) and arthritis are strongly associated, and the triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index combinations with obesity indicators [including TyG–BMI (glucose triglyceride–body mass index), TyG–WC (glucose triglyceride–waist circumference), and TyG–WHtR (glucose triglyceride–waist height ratio)] has recently been recognized as a more effective indicator for assessing IR. However, there is a lack of research on its association with arthritis, and it is also important to assess in different populations. Methods: The analysis utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Arthritis diagnosis relied on self-reporting confirmed by physicians. The association of TyG–BMI, TyG–WC, and TyG–WHtR with arthritis was analyzed through weighted logistic regression models, and exploring nonlinear effects with restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Secondary and sensitivity analyses included receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, comparisons of z score-related odds ratios, subgroup analyses, and multiple imputation. Results: The study involved 6141 CHARLS participants and 17,091 NHANES participants. Adjusting for confounding variables, TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR demonstrate a positive correlation with arthritis prevalence in both CHARLS (TyG–BMI: OR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.00–1.04; TyG–WHtR: OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.03–1.24) and NHANES (TyG–BMI: OR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.06–1.08; TyG–WHtR: OR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.40–1.60). RCS regression analysis demonstrated a significant nonlinear association. ROC analysis indicated that TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR were superior to TyG for the diagnosis of arthritis in both CHARLS and NHANES. Conclusions: TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR demonstrate a positive correlation with arthritis prevalence in both Chinese and the U.S. populations, displaying superior diagnostic relevance compared to TyG. Background: Spontaneous abortion is a common complication of pregnancy that can lead to adverse physical and psychological outcomes for women. Vitamin D is reported to be associated with reproductive functions, whereas its casual effects on abortion remains unclear. Materials and methods: In this study, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to systematically assess the causal relationships between serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration and the risk of spontaneous abortion. GWAS summary data of 25(OH)D were used as exposure, and data of spontaneous abortion was considered as outcome. A retrospective study was additionally conducted to verify the MR results. Results: MR estimates showed that a higher 25(OH)D level was potentially associated with decreased risk of spontaneous abortion (IVW, OR = 0.98, 95%CI = 0.90–1.06; MR Egger, OR = 0.94, 95%CI = 0.84–1.05; Weighted median, OR = 0.93, 95%CI = 0.82–1.06; Weighted mode, OR = 0.93, 95%CI = 0.84–1.03), though the P-value was not statistically significant. The retrospective study also produced consistent result of Vitamin D's protective role to spontaneous abortion. The P-value was very close to statistical significance (P = 0.053). Conclusions: This study reports the potential protective role of serum 25(OH)D concentration to spontaneous abortion, suggesting that increased vitamin D levels may decrease the risk of abortion. Background: With the conflict between the promise of ageing in health and longevity and the limited availability of health resources and social support, older adults in China inevitably experience anxieties surrounding health risks. This study aims to investigate how older adults perceive the health risks that come with getting older, explore the degree to which health risks affect older adults, and advocate for active engagement in practices for managing health risks. Methods: Using purposive sampling, three districts of Beijing (Xicheng District, Fengtai District, and Daxing District, respectively) were selected for the research. Qualitative semi-structured and in-depth interviews were conducted with 70 community-dwelling older adults who participated in the study. Data were extracted and analyzed based on a thematic framework approach. Results: Three main themes were identified: (i) the anxieties of older adults concerning health risks in ageing; (ii) the priorities of older adults for health risk management in ageing; (iii) the expectations of older adults for health risk management in ageing. The primary health concerns among older adults included disease incidence and function decline. It was found that basic health management emerged as a critical need for older adults to mitigate health risks. Moreover, it was observed that healthcare support for older adults from familial, institutional, and governmental levels exhibited varying degrees of inadequacy. Conclusions: The primary source of anxieties among older adults regarding health risks predominantly stems from a perceived sense of health deprivation. It is often compounded by persistent barriers to primary care of priorities in managing health risks among older adults. In addition, the expectations of older adults for health risk management emphasize the necessity for integrated care approaches. Therefore, further research should give priority to the prevention and management of health risks, aim to reduce anxieties, provide integrated care to meet the primary needs and expectations of older adults, and ultimately strive toward the overarching goal of promoting health and longevity. Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor with poor survival rate. G2 and S phase-expressed‐1 (GTSE1) takes part in the progression of diverse tumors as an oncogene, but its role and potential mechanism in NPC remain unknown. Methods: The GTSE1 expression was analyzed by western blot in NPC tissues and cells. Knock-down experiments were conducted to determine the function of GTSE1 in NPC by cell counting kit-8, the 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation experiment, cell scratch wound-healing experiment, transwell assays, tube forming experiment and western blot. In addition, the in vivo role of GTSE1 was addressed in tumor-bearing mice. Results: The expression of was increased in NPC. Silencing of GTSE1 suppressed cell viability, the percent of EdU positive cells, and the number of invasion cells and tubes, but enhanced the scratch ratio in NPC cells. Mechanically, downregulation of GTSE1 decreased the expressions of FOXM1 and STMN1, which were restored with the upregulation of FOXM1. Increased expression of STMN1 reversed the effects of the GTSE1 silencing on proliferation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis of NPC cells. Furthermore, knockdown of GTSE1 repressed the tumor volume and tumor weight of xenografted mice. Conclusion: GTSE1 was highly expressed in NPC, and silencing of GTSE1 ameliorated the malignant processes of NPC cells by upregulating STMN1, suggesting a possible therapeutical target for NPC. Purpose: To investigate the application and effectiveness of tension-reducing suture in the repair of hypertrophic scars. Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data was conducted on 82 patients with hypertrophic scars treated at the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from September 2021 to December 2022. Patients were operated with combination of heart-shaped tension-reducing suturing technique and looped, broad, and deep buried (LBD) suturing technique or conventional suture method. Outcomes of surgical treatment were assessed before and 6 months after surgery using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). Results: Improvements were achieved on scar quality compared to that preoperatively, with a reduction in scar width (1.7 ± 0.6 cm vs. 0.7 ± 0.2 cm, P < 0.001). Assessment using the POSAS and VSS scales showed significant improvements in each single parameter and total score compared to preoperative values (P < 0.05). The Combination method group achieved better score in total score of VSS scale, in color, stiffness, thickness and overall opinion of PSAS scale, and in vascularity, thickness, pliability and overall opinion of OSAS scale. Conclusion: The amalgamation of the heart-shaped tension-reducing suturing technique and the LBD suturing technique has shown promising outcomes, garnering notably high levels of patient satisfaction in the context of hypertrophic scar repair. Patients have exhibited favorable postoperative recoveries, underscoring the clinical merit and the prospective broader applicability of this approach in the realm of hypertrophic scar management. Background: The global prevalence of VCI has increased steadily in recent years, but diagnostic biomarkers for VCI in patients with non-disabling ischemic cerebrovascular incidents (NICE) remain indefinite. The primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between peripheral serological markers, white matter damage, and cognitive function in individuals with NICE. Methods: We collected clinical data, demographic information, and medical history from 257 patients with NICE. Using the MoCA upon admission, patients were categorized into either normal cognitive function (NCF) or VCI groups. Furthermore, they were classified as having mild white matter hyperintensity (mWMH) or severe WMH based on Fazekas scores. We then compared the levels of serological markers between the cognitive function groups and the WMH groups. Results: Among 257 patients with NICE, 165 were male and 92 were female. Lymphocyte count (OR = 0.448, P < 0.001) and LDL-C/HDL-C (OR = 0.725, P = 0.028) were protective factors for cognitive function in patients with NICE. The sWMH group had a higher age and inflammation markers but a lower MoCA score, and lymphocyte count than the mWMH group. In the mWMH group, lymphocyte count (AUC = 0.765, P < 0.001) and LDL-C/HDL-C (AUC = 0.740, P < 0.001) had an acceptable diagnostic value for the diagnosis of VCI. In the sWMH group, no significant differences were found in serological markers between the NCF and VCI groups. Conclusion: Lymphocyte count, LDL-C/HDL-C were independent protective factors for cognitive function in patients with NICE; they can be used as potential biological markers to distinguish VCI in patients with NICE and are applicable to subgroups of patients with mWMH. Background: To investigate the distribution of the height, weight and body mass index (BMI) of children with congenital cataracts (CC) before surgical treatment.Methods: This prospective study included children with CC ≤14 years of age presenting at the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center from Jan. 2013 to Aug. 2016. The height, weight, and BMI measurements of all participating children were obtained and compared with the World Health Organization Child Growth Reference (WHO Reference), matched by age and gender. The presence of a family history of CC or complicated systemic diseases as well as parental education levels and family income were also recorded.Results: In total, 595 children with CC were included. The mean age was 52.75 ± 33.99 months, and 34.29% (204/595) of them were unilateral cases. Among all of the children, 6.72% (40/595) of cases were complicated by systemic diseases. More than 1/5 (21.01%, 125/595) of the children had a family history of CC and exhibited bilateral involvement. Less than 1/4 (23.2) of the mothers were highly educated, and more than half of the families had a family income below the city average. Height, weight, and BMI measurements of most children with CC were within the normal ranges (±95% CI of the WHO Reference). Compared to the WHO Reference, both girls and boys aged 2-5 years revealed shorter heights, and the girls aged 5-14 years exhibited a shorter height, lower body weight and lower BMI. The heights of the children with CC and systemic diseases were also shorter than the WHO Reference. The children with CC who had a family history of disease had shorter heights and lower BMIs than children with CC but no family history, and the measurements of both groups were lower than the WHO Reference values.Conclusions: The height, weight and BMI of most of the children with CC in this study were within the normal ranges of the WHO Reference. However, the children with CC and concomitant systemic diseases and those with a family history of CC had shorter heights and lower BMIs. Background: To compare the in-the-bag stability and visual function of single-piece intraocular lenses (IOLs) and three-piece IOLs. Methods: A total of 65 patients with age-related cataracts (80 eyes) were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive in-the-bag implantation of either a single-piece IOL (40 eyes) or a three-piece IOL (40 eyes). Follow-up visits were conducted at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. Visual acuity, refraction and total aberration were examined. IOL position stability (including axial movement, decentration and tilt) was measured using a Scheimpflug imaging system. Results: At the 3-month follow-up visit, single-piece IOLs did not exhibit significant axial movement (0.07 ± 0.30 mm, p = 0.13) compared with their axial position at 1 week postoperatively, whereas three-piece IOLs displayed forward axial movement of -0.22 ± 0.23 mm (p < 0.0001). The mean manifest spherical equivalence (SE) of eyes with single-piece IOL was 0.15 ± 0.18D, whereas in eyes with three-piece IOLs, the mean manifest SE was -0.34 ± 0.15D (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in IOL decentration, tilt, uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity or total spherical aberration between the two groups. Conclusions: Three months after implantation, single-piece IOLs exhibit better axial stability and more stable refractive outcome than three-piece IOLs, but both IOLs perform equally well in terms of decentration, tilt, visual acuity and total aberration. Background: Ocular biometry is important for preoperative assessment in cataract and anterior segment surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate normative ocular biometric parameters and their associations in an older Chinese population.Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study. From 2013 to 2014, we recruited inhabitants aged 50 years or older in Guangzhou, China. Among 1,117 participants in the study, data from 1,015 phakic right eyes were used for analyses. Ocular parameters including axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal curvature (K) were measured using an IOL Master.Results: The mean AL, ACD, and K were 23.48 mm [95 % confidence interval (CI), 23.40-23.55], 3.03 mm (CI, 3.01-3.05), and 44.20 mm (CI, 44.11-44.29), respectively. A mean reduction in ACD with age was observed (P = 0.002) in male subjects but not in female subjects (P = 0.558). Male subjects had significantly longer ALs (23.68 mm versus 23.23 mm, P < 0.001), deeper ACDs (3.13 mm versus 2.95 mm, P < 0.001), and flatter Ks (43.85D versus 44.50 D, P < 0.001) than female subjects. Eyes with axial elongation had a flatter cornea (r = -0.437, P < 0.001) and a deeper anterior chamber (r = 0.652, p < 0.001). The ACD was correlated with K (r = -0.266, P < 0.001).Conclusions: These data provide normative values for AL, ACD, and K using the IOL Master for a population in South China. The AL in this Chinese cohort was greater than that observed in the Singaporean Chinese but smaller than that observed in Malaysia and for Caucasians. Background: Ocular images play an essential role in ophthalmological diagnoses. Having an imbalanced dataset is an inevitable issue in automated ocular diseases diagnosis; the scarcity of positive samples always tends to result in the misdiagnosis of severe patients during the classification task. Exploring an effective computer-aided diagnostic method to deal with imbalanced ophthalmological dataset is crucial., Methods: In this paper, we develop an effective cost-sensitive deep residual convolutional neural network (CS-ResCNN) classifier to diagnose ophthalmic diseases using retro-illumination images. First, the regions of interest (crystalline lens) are automatically identified via twice-applied Canny detection and Hough transformation. Then, the localized zones are fed into the CS-ResCNN to extract high-level features for subsequent use in automatic diagnosis. Second, the impacts of cost factors on the CS-ResCNN are further analyzed using a grid-search procedure to verify that our proposed system is robust and efficient., Results: Qualitative analyses and quantitative experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms other conventional approaches and offers exceptional mean accuracy (92.24%), specificity (93.19%), sensitivity (89.66%) and AUC (97.11%) results. Moreover, the sensitivity of the CS-ResCNN is enhanced by over 13.6% compared to the native CNN method., Conclusion: Our study provides a practical strategy for addressing imbalanced ophthalmological datasets and has the potential to be applied to other medical images. The developed and deployed CS-ResCNN could serve as computer-aided diagnosis software for ophthalmologists in clinical application.

Background: The cell source for transplantation therapy is always a prerequisite question to be solved in clinical applications. Neural cells are considered non-regenerable, which highly restrict their application in the treatment for nerve injury. Therefore, neural trans-differentiation based on gene transfection provides a new solution to this issue. Compared to viral strategy, non-viral gene delivery systems are considered as a more promising way to achieve this aim. This study centers on a novel application of Porphyra yezoensis polysaccharide as a non-viral gene carrier for the neural trans-differentiation of mouse fibroblasts., Results: Ethanediamine modified P. yezoensis polysaccharide (Ed-PYP) served as a gene carrier and a group of plasmids that encode Ascl1, Brn4, and Tcf3 (pABT) self-assembled into nanoparticles. Results demonstrated that Ed-PYP-pABT nanoparticles at Ed-PYP: pABT weight ratio of 40:1 was the optimal candidate for gene delivery. ELISA assay revealed the highest expression levels of NGF, BDNF and SHH at 14 days after last transfection. Immunofluorescence and western blot assays also showed robust expression of neural markers including Nestin, GFAP, β-3tubulin, NF200, GAP43 and MAP2, in induced 3T6 cells at this time point., Conclusion: Overall, these findings indicated that the P. yezoensis polysaccharide-based non-viral gene co-delivery system is a promising strategy for the generation of neural cells, which might facilitate the developments in the recovery of neural injuries.

Background: The majority of rare diseases are complex diseases caused by a combination of multiple morbigenous factors. However, uncovering the complex etiology and pathogenesis of rare diseases is difficult due to limited clinical resources and conventional statistical methods. This study aims to investigate the interrelationship and the effectiveness of potential factors of pediatric cataract, for the exploration of data mining strategy in the scenarios of rare diseases., Methods: We established a pilot rare disease specialized care center to systematically record all information and the entire treatment process of pediatric cataract patients. These clinical records contain the medical history, multiple structural indices, and comprehensive functional metrics. A two-layer structural equation model network was applied, and eight potential factors were filtered and included in the final modeling., Results: Four risk factors (area, density, location, and abnormal pregnancy experience) and four beneficial factors (axis length, uncorrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and age at diagnosis) were identified. Quantifiable results suggested that abnormal pregnancy history may be the principle risk factor among medical history for pediatric cataracts. Moreover, axis length, density, uncorrected visual acuity and age at diagnosis served as the dominant factors and should be emphasized in regular clinical practice., Conclusions: This study proposes a generalized evidence-based pattern for rare and complex disease data mining, provides new insights and clinical implications on pediatric cataract, and promotes rare-disease research and prevention to benefit patients.

Background: Congenital cataracts are often complicated by anterior segment dysgenesis. This study aims to compare bilateral anterior segment parameters, macular thickness, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in pediatric cataract patients at 3 months after unilateral cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation., Methods: Fifty-three pediatric patients with uncomplicated unilateral total cataracts were included. At 3 months post-surgery, bilateral corneal thickness at the thinnest location (CTTL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber volume (ACV) were measured using Pentacam. Central macular thickness (CMT) was evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. BCVA was measured by experienced optometrists concurrently. Descriptive statistics and bivariate corrections were performed to analyze the interocular differences in bilateral anatomic parameters and their relationships with BCVA., Results: For all 53 included patients (mean age 5.2 ± 2.3 years), the median BCVA was 10/40 in the operated eyes and 40/40 in the contralateral eyes, which indicates a significant interocular difference. BCVA values in the contralateral eyes were significantly correlated with patient age at surgery, but this result differed for BCVA in the operated eyes. The Pentacam analysis revealed no significant interocular differences in bilateral CTTL and ACV, but significant differences were found for ACD., Conclusions: At 3 months after surgery, unilateral pediatric cataract patients exhibited no significant interocular differences in identified anatomical parameters (except for ACD), and these parameters were not significantly correlated with BCVA in bilateral eyes. There was no statistically significant difference in IOL decentration, tilt, uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity or total spherical aberration between the two groups., Conclusions: Three months after implantation, single-piece IOLs exhibit better axial stability and more stable refractive outcome than three-piece IOLs, but both IOLs perform equally well in terms of decentration, tilt, visual acuity and total aberration., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrial.gov, NCT02609997 , 11/18/2015, retrospectively registered.

Background: Morphological traits related to flag leaves are determinant traits influencing plant architecture and yield potential in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, little is known regarding their genetic controls under drought stress. One hundred and twenty F8-derived recombinant inbred lines from a cross between two common wheat cultivars Longjian 19 and Q9086 were developed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and to dissect the genetic bases underlying flag leaf width, length, area, length to width ratio and basal angle under drought stress and well-watered conditions consistent over four environments., Results: A total of 55 additive and 51 pairs of epistatic QTLs were identified on all 21 chromosomes except 6D, among which additive loci were highly concentrated in a few of same or adjacent marker intervals in individual chromosomes. Two specific marker intervals of Xwmc694-Xwmc156 on chromosome 1B and Xbarc1072-Xwmc272 on chromosome 2B were co-located by additive QTLs for four tested traits. Twenty additive loci were repeatedly detected in more than two environments, suggestive of stable A-QTLs. A majority of QTLs involved significant additive and epistatic effects, as well as QTL × environment interactions (QEIs). Of these, 72.7 % of additive QEIs and 80 % of epistatic QEIs were related to drought stress with significant genetic effects decreasing phenotypic values. By contrast, additive and QEIs effects contributed more phenotypic variation than epistatic effects., Conclusions: Flag leaf morphology in wheat was predominantly controlled by additive and QEIs effects, where more QEIs effects occurred in drought stress and depressed phenotypic performances. Several QTL clusters indicated tight linkage or pleiotropy in the inheritance of these traits. Twenty stable QTLs for flag leaf morphology are potentially useful for the genetic improvement of drought tolerance in wheat through QTL pyramiding.

Background: Dwarfism is one of the most valuable traits in banana breeding because semi-dwarf cultivars show good resistance to damage by wind and rain. Moreover, these cultivars present advantages of convenient cultivation, management, and so on. We obtained a dwarf mutant '8818-1' through EMS (ethyl methane sulphonate) mutagenesis of Williams banana 8818 (Musa spp. AAA group). Our research have shown that gibberellins (GAs) content in 8818-1 false stems was significantly lower than that in its parent 8818 and the dwarf type of 8818-1 could be restored by application of exogenous GA3. Although GA exerts important impacts on the 8818-1 dwarf type, our understanding of the regulation of GA metabolism during banana dwarf mutant development remains limited., Results: Genome-wide screening revealed 36 candidate GA metabolism genes were systematically identified for the first time; these genes included 3 MaCPS, 2 MaKS, 1 MaKO, 2 MaKAO, 10 MaGA20ox, 4 MaGA3ox, and 14 MaGA2ox genes. Phylogenetic tree and conserved protein domain analyses showed sequence conservation and divergence. GA metabolism genes exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns. Early GA biosynthesis genes were constitutively expressed but presented differential regulation in different tissues in Williams banana. GA oxidase family genes were mainly transcribed in young fruits, thus suggesting that young fruits were the most active tissue involved in GA metabolism, followed by leaves, bracts, and finally approximately mature fruits. Expression patterns between 8818 and 8818-1 revealed that MaGA20ox4, MaGA20ox5, and MaGA20ox7 of the MaGA20ox gene family and MaGA2ox7, MaGA2ox12, and MaGA2ox14 of the MaGA2ox gene family exhibited significant differential expression and high-expression levels in false stems. These genes are likely to be responsible for the regulation of GAs content in 8818-1 false stems., Conclusion: Overall, phylogenetic evolution, tissue specificity and differential expression analyses of GA metabolism genes can provide a better understanding of GA-regulated development in banana. The present results revealed that MaGA20ox4, MaGA20ox5, MaGA20ox7, MaGA2ox7, MaGA2ox12, and MaGA2ox14 were the main genes regulating GA content difference between 8818 and 8818-1. All of these genes may perform important functions in the developmental processes of banana, but each gene may perform different functions in different tissues or during different developmental stages.

Background: Ocular biometry is important for preoperative assessment in cataract and anterior segment surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate normative ocular biometric parameters and their associations in an older Chinese population., Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study. From 2013 to 2014, we recruited inhabitants aged 50 years or older in Guangzhou, China. Among 1,117 participants in the study, data from 1,015 phakic right eyes were used for analyses. Ocular parameters including axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal curvature (K) were measured using an IOL Master., Results: The mean AL, ACD, and K were 23.48 mm [95 % confidence interval (CI), 23.40-23.55], 3.03 mm (CI, 3.01-3.05), and 44.20 mm (CI, 44.11-44.29), respectively. A mean reduction in ACD with age was observed (P = 0.002) in male subjects but not in female subjects (P = 0.558). Male subjects had significantly longer ALs (23.68 mm versus 23.23 mm, P < 0.001), deeper ACDs (3.13 mm versus 2.95 mm, P < 0.001), and flatter Ks (43.85D versus 44.50 D, P < 0.001) than female subjects. Eyes with axial elongation had a flatter cornea (r = -0.437, P < 0.001) and a deeper anterior chamber (r = 0.652, p < 0.001). The ACD was correlated with K (r = -0.266, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: These data provide normative values for AL, ACD, and K using the IOL Master for a population in South China. The AL in this Chinese cohort was greater than that observed in the Singaporean Chinese but smaller than that observed in Malaysia and for Caucasians. The Chinese have a shallower ACD than some other racial groups. Age and sex were the most consistent predictors of ocular biometry in the older population from South China.
