Current knowledge about the public social welfare sphere is vast, but fragmented. Boundaries defined by geography, language, and culture hinder knowledge exchange globally. In addition, there are not enough opportunities for explorers of the field's two conceptual hemispheres—social policy and social administration-to share insights across disciplinary boundaries. The Oxford Handbook of Governance and Management for Social Policy seeks to overcome these obstacles by applying multiple administrative lenses to diverse social policy issues from around the globe. Authors were carefully chosen by editors based in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Canada and the United States, Europe, and Latin America to detail the challenges facing their regions'social welfare spheres and the ways in which social systems have responded. Each main section of the handbook profiles the state of interdisciplinary knowledge in a geographic region during the decades spanning the turn of the millennium. Sub-sections of the handbook are organized thematically to enable inter-regional comparisons and spark insights across socio-cultural and academic boundaries. The result is a map of the intersection of social policy, governance studies, and public management on the eve of the COVID-19 global pandemic on all six of our planet's continuously inhabited continents. Starting in 2020, the pandemic and related crises forced adaptations to social welfare systems in every part of the world, with implications that may not be understood for generations. Future researchers will describe and measure such changes relative to benchmarks set in the pre-pandemic period, including the rich variety of practices and paradigms collected in this handbook.

Questo volume raccoglie i contributi selezionati in occasione del decimo Forum Giovani dell'Associazione Italiana di Sociologia (AIS), che si è tenuto nel 2013 all'Università di Firenze. I saggi qui raccolti si confrontano, a partire da diverse prospettive teoriche e approcci metodologici, con le emergenze del presente, in particolare con le conseguenze della crisi economica, sociale e culturale che stiamo vivendo in questi anni. Nel complesso lo spessore dei contributi fa ritenere che la ricerca italiana nel campo della sociologia sia viva, qualificata e tutt'altro che depressa, il che costituisce un incoraggiante segnale di riscatto da parte delle giovani generazioni di studiosi rispetto alla situazione critica in cui si trova a operare la ricerca universitaria nel nostro paese, in particolare nel settore delle scienze sociali. Social change is omnipresent, rapid and influential, as it entails people's responsive adaptation. Both social change and psychosocial responses to it have been constantly attracting attention, research, deliberation, theorizing and policy reengineering, thus furthering social change. Social change can cover economic, political, cultural and communal aspects. It can deal with issues such as the economic or financial crisis, marketization, revolution, social movement, globalization, nation building, migration, urbanization, demographic transition, secularization, acculturation, enculturation, modernization, posmodernization, military or business war and so on. Psychosocial responses can cover morale, demoralization, distress, anger, cooperation, alliance, trust, aggression, suicide, caring, help seeking, social integration, social cohesion, social identity, rebellion and crime. This book presents a thorough understanding of social change and psychosocial responses to it which is indispensable to the journey toward a better society and life.

Michael Temple argues that the new local governance system'created'by Margaret Thatcher's reforms, when combined with New Labour's emphasis on delivering measurable improvements to outputs, has enabled Tony Blair to have unprecedented control over the public policy process. The author concludes that, far from a more pluralist political culture, the emphasis on achieving centrally determined outputs means that New Labour's governing style is more centralized and directive than the Conservatives under Margaret Thatcher; to what end is still uncertain.

The rhetoric of'needs'has been used to legitimate all major turns in UK health policy since 1936. This study identifies the ethical, policy and technical issues arising from the concept of needs.
