Social and environmental factors have profound impacts on health and diseases across the lifespan. Each year, hundreds of millions of animals are used in biomedical research. Yet many experimental studies utilize animals housed in standard conditions conferring minimal physical, social, and mental stimulation. Lacking appreciation of macroenvironment impacts on physiology and disease risks of the laboratory animals may not only hinder the use of appropriate animal models for human diseases, but also question the validity of preclinical assessments of therapeutic agents.This book summarizes our work on environmental enrichment, a housing condition for laboratory animals, recapitulating an active lifestyle by providing a complex physical, social, and cognitive stimulations. Environmental enrichment exerts a wide range of benefits on energy balance, cancer, immunity, stress, behavior, and healthy aging. One underlying mechanism is the activation of a specific neuroendocrine brain-adipocyte axis with brain-derived neurotrophic factor as the key brain mediator. This book integrates recent discoveries regarding mechanisms, mediators, and biomarkers of environmental enrichment, and discusses its translational potential.By providing a timely review and discussion of murine models, this book should be of interest to basic, translational, and clinical researchers, as well as psychologists, nutrition scientists, and students that have interest in cancer, obesity, aging, and genetic disorders.

Este livro analisa a poesia de Solano Trindade (1908?1974), especificamente o livro'Cantares ao meu povo', publicado em 1961, em São Paulo, pela Editora Fulgor. Solano foi filiado ao Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB), nos anos 1940, realizou conferência de poesia no Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN), foi diretor do Teatro Popular Brasileiro (TPB), nos anos 1950, e escreveu poemas sociais, que reivindicam a memória da escravidão e as lutas contra o racismo, por alimentação, moradia, educação e serviços de saúde. Escreveu também poemas que representam de forma positiva as religiões afro-brasileiras e as mulheres negras. Considerando esses aspectos, o objetivo deste livro é discutir conceitualmente a poesia de Trindade como movimento social negro, articulando literatura, história e sociologia.

The diaspora of Portuguese Jews and New Christians, known as Gente da Nação (People of the Nation), is considered the largest European diaspora of the early modern period. Portuguese Jews not only founded the first congregations and synagogues in Brazil (Recife and Olinda), but when they left Brazil they played an imperative role in establishing the first Jewish communities in Suriname, throughout the Caribbean, and in North America.Portuguese Jews and New Christians and their descendants were deeply involved in the colonial enterprise in Brazil. They were among the New World's first sugarcane-industry experts, skilled laborers, merchants, rabbis, calligraphists, playwrights, poets, writers, pharmacists, medical doctors, real estate brokers, and geographers—a fact that remains largely unknown in most public and academic spheres.Drawing on nearly twenty thousand digitized dossiers of the Portuguese Inquisition, this volume offers a comprehensive, critical overview informed by both relatively inaccessible secondary sources and a significant body of primary sources.

Os crimes de ódio, cometidos em razão do gênero, da orientação sexual, da etnia, da nacionalidade, da religião, dentre outras ofensas a direitos fundamentais, e a possibilidade de serem enfrentados à luz da justiça restaurativa são a proposta do presente livro. Os hate crimes têm como motivação o sentimento de repulsa e de discriminação contra um determinado grupo com o propósito de discriminação e motivado pelo ódio. O tratamento que recebem difere no direito comparado, alguns trazendo essa circunstância como uma agravante, outros como uma circunstância qualificadora do crime, mas muitos países sem tipificação específica. Diante de tamanha indefinição ainda existente na doutrina, tanto sobre a natureza dos crimes de ódio quanto sobre a melhor forma de enfrentamento, impõe-se um estudo mais aprofundado da justiça restaurativa como alternativa. Abordar a justiça restaurativa, seus princípios, seus valores e se suas práticas são suficientes e capazes para o enfrentamento de determinadas condutas, a fim de evitar que comportamentos discriminatórios continuem a ser praticados, é o que se pretende trazer à reflexão.

Este livro objetiva evidenciar a necessidade urgente de elaborar normas e implementar políticas públicas para proteção dos refugiados LGBTQIA+, tanto no plano internacional quanto nacional, dada a situação de vulnerabilidade que enfrentam. Hoje, essa vulnerabilidade se agrava conforme aumenta o fluxo migratório no Brasil e no mundo. Os refugiados são os que detêm maior vulnerabilidade, em razão do deslocamento forçado e da ausência de proteção jurídica dos seus Estados de origem. Costumam sofrer restrições nos seus direitos humanos e forte discriminação nos lugares de destino, onde, na maior parte, não há legislação nem políticas públicas direcionadas a garantir esses direitos. Esse cenário pode ser transformado com programas de capacitação aos profissionais de diferentes áreas que trabalham com os refugiados LGBTQIA+, para que possam fornecer um atendimento sensível e adequado. As iniciativas que promoverem a inclusão e a diversidade também podem facilitar o acesso ao mercado de trabalho, garantindo oportunidades justas e igualdade de condições. Ademais, os projetos pedagógicos inclusivos podem criar espaços de aprendizado que promovam o respeito e a compreensão da diversidade. Num primeiro movimento, examina a origem e o desenvolvimento do fenômeno da discriminação às religiões afro-brasileiras, traçando a seguir a gênese do atual serviço Disque 100 na sua dupla dimensão: como mecanismo de repressão e de promoção dos direitos humanos e apresentando dados que confirmam sua importância. Em seguida, através dos verbos desmontar, extinguir, fundir, abolir, reduzir, anular, esvaziar e enfraquecer, aponta o gradual processo de ruptura político-institucional levado a cabo pelo governo passado. A necropolítica implantada pelo governo passado estava profundamente ancorada no racismo, no sexismo e no classismo, que estruturavam políticas públicas de morte. Na conclusão, o autor nos relembra que:'essa concepção sombria pode ameaçar o efetivo exercício da liberdade religiosa, além de perpetuar paradigmas que representam um retrocesso de grandes proporções, ancorado numa perspectiva neoconservadora no tocante à agenda social'. As ofensas às chamadas minorias sexuais não podem restar incólumes, pois tais grupos vulnerabilizados necessitam, em um Estado Democrático de Direito, de especial atenção sob pena de padecerem de uma realidade que os aparte plenamente de uma vida digna, muitas vezes flertando com uma realidade de segregação e estigma tamanha que os priva do exercício pleno de sua cidadania inclusiva. Trazer a público uma obra com 20 artigos tratando da relação existente entre responsabilidade civil e os elementos da sexualidade (sexo, gênero, orientação sexual e identidade de gênero) é vital não só em razão do conteúdo valioso dos artigos que a compõe, mas também por conferir visibilidade ao tema que muito sofre com as alegações de ausência de legitimidade ante a existência de uma igualdade formal (mas longe de se consolidar como material e substancial), bem como pelo desprezo das pautas das minorias identitárias, tratadas por muitos de forma jocosa e marginalizada'. Esta obra é fruto da pesquisa realizada durante o curso de Mestrado do Programa de Pós-Graduação de Ensino em Educação Básica (PPGEB-CAp/UERJ), que teve por objetivo produzir – a partir do Projeto A Cor da Cultura – uma reflexão sobre os caminhos surgidos após a promulgação da Lei nº 10.639/2003, a qual estabelece as diretrizes e bases da Educação Nacional, para incluir no currículo oficial da Rede de Ensino a obrigatoriedade da temática'História e Cultura Afro-Brasileira', posteriormente alterada pela Lei nº 11.645/2008, quando se incluiu também a'História e Cultura Indígena'. A Cor da Cultura constitui-se num projeto de ação afirmativa para a valorização da cultura afrodescendente criado em 2004 pelo Canal Futura, da Fundação Roberto Marinho, e contou com várias parcerias. Em 2014, o Projeto recebeu um expressivo corte em seu orçamento, fazendo com que o site e outros produtos fossem grandemente afetados, embora ainda seja possível acessar grande parte de seu material na Internet.

The rise of far-right communities on digital platforms is a global crisis. Digital Islamophobia tracks far-right groups where they are a virtual and vicious threat, exploring how these networks grow, develop, and circulate Islamophobic hate-speech on Twitter. Reconstructing this media ecosystem, Digital Islamophobia traces the reactionary political ideologies animating these groups through feminist data analytic techniques in a transnational study of German and American far-right, digitally networked users. This work illustrates far-right communities using data visualization techniques, identifies a taxonomy of user-types, analyzes themes and stories that motivate far-right users, and tracks the spread of linked forms of anti-Muslim sentiment, reactionary ideologies, and (mis)information. In doing so, Digital Islamophobia details how far-right discourse is not merely national, or even transatlantic, but increasingly transnationalized among American, German, as well as Indian and Nigerian digital networks. By tracking and tracing the contours of these far-right digital communities on Twitter and analyzing the content of their conversations, Digital Islamophobia provides policy-makers, researchers, and scholars with a potential road-map to stop them.
