This is the second of two books about African-American female chemists. The first book (African-American Women Chemists, 2011) focused on the early pioneers--women chemists from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act. African American Women Chemists in the Modern Era focuses on contemporary women who have benefited from the Civil Rights Act and are now working as chemists or chemical engineers. This book was produced by taking the oral history of women who are leaders in their field and who wanted to tell the world how they suceeded. It features eighteen amazing women in this book and each of them has a claim to fame, despite hiding in plain sight. These women reveal the history of their lives from youth to adult. Overall, Jeannette Brown aims to inspire women and minorities to pursue careers in the sciences, as evidenced by the successful career paths of the women that came before them.

The present volume is an attempt to skitch, in a style suitable for general reading, the lives of some of the most prominent chemists of the past. As it is obviously impossible for one person to deal with them all, the first great difficulty in such a project is to make the selection. After much reflection, the guiding principle adopted is the evolution of the Atomic Theory from the point of view of the Chemist.

The nineteenth century saw the beginning and flourishing of the now huge and important field of organophosphorus chemistry. The first compound with a carbon-phosphorus bond was made in 1845, but the scope of this new field did not become apparent until the work of the famous August Wilhelm Hofmann spanning the years 1855-1873. It was only after his work, that the field attracted the attention of other chemists. The most notable was August Michaelis who made many valuable contributions. By the end of the century, the field was well established and the path was clear for dramatic growth in the twentieth century, especially the second half. Phosphorus can be found in various functional groups, and the discovery and description of these, and the development of still useful synthetic methods, are traced in this book.

Chemical companies are seeking new ideas, a trained workforce, and new market opportunities regardless of geographic location. During an October 2003 workshop, leaders in chemistry and chemical engineering from industry, academia, government, and private funding organizations explored the implications of an increasingly global research environment for the chemistry and chemical engineering workforce.
