One of the kitchens for sale will be the Treviso, named after the city where the company has its headquarters. Ghost Buster, a commode designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell, is a single piece of transparent molded plastic with two open shelves that requires the user to be scrupulously, compulsively, obsessively neat. No books in lopsided piles. No crumpled pieces of paper. The piece is part of Kartell's Ghost family, said Claudio Luti, the chief executive officer of Kartell, which has its headquarters in Milan. First Aid, a medicine cabinet decorated with the Red Cross symbol, was modeled on Thomas Ericksson's 1992 Cross Medicine Cabinet for Cappellini, a simple cross-shaped lacquered metal cabinet that comes in five colors, including red and white. Lily Latifi, an Iranian textile designer living in Paris, created her new collection of room dividers, shades and stools out of wool felt because ''it's like sculpture,'' she said. ''Roy McMakin: When Is a Chair Not a Chair'' (Skira/Rizzoli, in association with Matthew Marks Gallery, $65) asks the right question about the work of the 53-year-old artist, furniture designer and architect. The answer: sometimes. Mr. McMakin, who lives in Seattle, makes furniture that is comfortable, yet bedevils the eye. A bed has only half a footboard; a chest has different size knobs on each drawer, which turns opening the drawers into a conscious, tactile act. ''The shapes I make evolve from what I have needed or wanted in my house,'' said Lisa Neimeth, a 46-year-old ceramicist in San Francisco. When she bought a 60-inch round dining table, she said, she thought a Lazy Susan would be a worthwhile addition. But shopping for one proved to be dismaying. ''They were pretty tacky, made of laminated wood or plastic,'' she said. When the New-York based designer Karim Rashid was asked to design a sconce for ITRE, an Italian lighting manufacturer, he said, ''I wanted to get out of the square and cylindrical shapes.'' Trex, the soft-edged light he designed, is hexagonal and made of a glossy white heat-formed acrylic. When it is turned on, it glows softly, like an ice floe illuminated from within. Foscarini, the Italian lighting company, introduced Allegro, a collection of chandeliers intended for hotels and restaurants, in 2007. Designed by Atelier Oi, a Swiss architecture firm, they were made from aluminum rods suspended from wire, so they moved and made a gentle tinkling noise if you touched them. (As Carlo Urbinati, the managing director of Foscarini, put it, ''They can sing.'') But they were all too big for residential use -- the largest was 53 1/2 inches wide and tall. Now Foscarini has come out with Allegretto, a line of smaller versions of the original fixtures. Like the Russian nesting dolls that tuck inside one another, Offi Nester Stacking Boxes -- which can be used as bookcases, stools or tables -- fit snugly together. Lucy Slivinski, a sculptor in Chicago who makes lighting fixtures out of salvaged metal scraps, attributes her affinity for recycling to her grandparents, who recycled as a matter of necessity during the Depression. Wonder Bread bags, with their red, blue and yellow polka dots, she said, were crocheted into rugs; even stray pieces of string would be collected and crocheted ''into a container for a Kleenex box,'' she said. ''I was always picking up found objects, anything that caught my eye, little pieces of glass, pieces of metal wire.'' The new Electrolux Ultrasilencer Green vacuum cleaner is made of black plastic, not because it looks good, but because the vacuum is 55 percent recycled plastic. ''Black is the color we can get a significant quantity of -- and it molds better,'' said Richard Chapman, the general manager of Electrolux in the United States.
