When I received a copy of Torkild Thanem and David Knights' I Embodied Research Methods i I looked at the cover, packed with people in pink shirts and T-shirts viewed from above, and felt a touch of anxiety mixed with curiosity about this book. The dialogue between Torkild and David is highly lively throughout and even becomes tense at times, such as when the reader learns that Torkild is frustrated and perhaps even irritated by David's low writing productivity. Thanem and Knights could have adopted the usual position of critique that acts from and remains at the margins, but rather than staying outside, they get their hands dirty with social science research methods - research design, traditional qualitative method techniques, analysis, writing - and reverse them from within. Taking some controversial claims philosopher Jason Brennan makes in his book Against Democracy (Brennan 2016) as a starting point, this paper argues in favour of two theses: (1) There is No Such Thing as Superior Political Judgement; (2) There Is No Such Thing as Uncontroversial Social Scientific Knowledge. Harry Collins' Tacit and Explicit Knowledge is engaged to clarify and expand the notions of tacit and explicit. A broader continuum for tacit knowledge and its indirectly or only partially explicable components is provided by complementing Collins' exposition of tacit knowledge with a discussion of formal systems and Polanyi's exposition of tacit knowing. Support is provided for Collins' distinction between strings and language, mechanical modeling as a form of explication, and the notion that machines lack tacit knowledge and language. While Collins emphasizes the inexplicability of cultural fluency as tacit knowledge, Polanyi emphasizes the functional dimension of skillful performances. The conceptual strengths and weaknesses of Collins' and Polanyi's approaches are examined. Collins' emphasis on string transformation and his division of tacit knowing into Relational (RTK), Somatic (STK), and Collective (CTK) are helpful tools, but should not flatten Polanyi's multiple levels of knowing and being into a dualism that may encourage reductionism. As social science research programmes tend to increase in scale, reporting their results in a coherent manner is growing more difficult. Andrew WEBSTER's edited volume presents a wealth of social science research and is a pleasant read for many reasons. However, its sheer vastness can hardly be contained in an edited volume. In this article, we review the book itself whilst we also discuss what it means to report about large scale social science research programmes and propose an alternative mode for this reporting: the ergography. The ergography provides a window not so much on the results of the programme but rather on the work that is being done in the context of a research programme. The ergography allows for an active stand from the reader and aims to bring the reader as closely as possible to the laboratory, doctor's office or hospital that has been part of the research.
