The Man Who Caught the Storm - The Life of Legendary Tornado Chaser Tim Samaras Tim Samaras was a legendary storm chaser who changed the face of tornado science, helping researchers to understand better how changes in pressure, humidity, winds and temperature conspire to produce this powerful phenomenon. At 18:23 local time, Samaras, his photographer son Paul, and meteorologist Carl Young, a TWISTEX team member, were outmanoeuvred and killed by a violent wedge tornado with winds of 295 mph (475kmh SP -1 sp ) near El Reno, Oklahoma. Highlights from the article: Once on board the I Otso i , Clare learned about the geography and physics of sea ice, as well as the history and nature of the environment in which he encountered it. The I Otso i came to the rescue of a number of vessels during Clare's time on board, and consequently he learned of the many vital decisions the crew members have to make. I particularly like Clare's vivid description of the beautiful, sometimes surreal scenery outside the I Otso - i especially the moment when he stepped out on to the ice in the middle of the sea for the first time.

In each chapter Rowell clearly and simply explains the basic physics and takes the various weather phenomena back to first principles before putting them into context with real situations, not just around the UK but worldwide as well.
