As the author of this book review notes, not many resources exist to document the ecological attitudes, practices, and conditions of Japanese citizens during the medieval period. Mizuno Shoji’s work is thus a pioneering work on a challenging subject. Mizuno discusses the relationship between the people and the environment through documents from estates (shoen) and villages; depictions of Lake Biwa, near Kyoto, reports on pollution due to natural disasters, mainly fires; and records providing evidence of water pollution at a national shrine. The reviewer hopes more of this type of history will follow, because the subject is important, but at the same time wonders how much the historian can accomplish.
