The arrival of a new book from the Scottish Society for Northern Studies is always a pleasure. Later in the volume is an interesting paper by Ryan Foster looking at the use of place name elements - I sætr i and - I ærgi i , both used for shieling sites, in Skye and the Outer Hebrides. The final linguistic paper is Arne Kruse's consideration of the mysterious place-name "Laithlind", found in the Irish sources and much discussed by scholars, which was used to describe the origins of some of the pivotal early Scandinavian characters. In 1901, O'Brien had become a member of a small group tasked by Aspinall with looking into all aspects of the possible electrification of the L&YR route from Liverpool northwards along the Lancashire coast to Southport. What was it like being a woman in the Irish Republican Army? Drawing on her practice-led creative writing doctoral research Tracey Iceton attempts to answer this question. Including extracts from Iceton's PhD novel, Herself Alone in Orange Rain, this paper illustrates how her creative practice explores and represents the lived experiences of IRA women. A survey of Troubles fiction reveals how the genre stereotypes portrayals of IRA women and their experiences, misrepresenting the reality. Alongside this literary review, Iceton presents factual accounts of female IRA volunteers and outlines, in author commentaries, how her creative writing practice draws on these accounts to ensure her novel offers a more accurate fictional portrayal of female IRA volunteers and their experiences of active service. In the Middle English Breton lay, Sir Orfeo (c. 1340), the Underworld transforms from its classical prototype of an ominous realm of shadows into the marvellous Otherworld. In this paper, I examine the Orfeo poet's rewriting of Greco-Roman Orpheus tradition with a focus on the poet's reception of the classical Underworld so as to explicate how frequently the poet makes use of romance elements to relocate the Underworld / Otherworld in a context blended with Celtic folklore and chivalric conventions. I argue that the Orfeo poet refashions the classical Underworld and formulates a world full of natural and artistic spectacle. More importantly, far from being a world of mournful shadows and the symbol of forever loss, the Otherworld in Sir Orfeo is a domain of light and hope where mortals encounter adventures, undergo trials, and return to the corporeal world in bliss and good faith. Ireland is the first country in the world to apply a legislative gender quota under an STV electoral system. Since 2016, the quota has required parties to ensure that at least thirty percent of their candidates running in the general election are women. Due to the nature of the electoral system, namely that it is candidate-centred, the impact of the quota has the potential to be limited if voter bias is present among the electorate. While the initial gains from the quota's first election in 2016 were maintained at the 2020 general election, with one more woman elected to Dáil Éireann, the headline figures may be misleading. In this earthquake election, a significant number of high-profile women from across the political spectrum lost their seats, while male colleagues retained theirs, suggesting that female candidates may have been evaluated differently from their male counterparts. Using self-reported voter attitudes from the 2020 Irish National Election Study, we investigate whether there is an underlying bias against women amongst voters. We test whether such a bias has an impact on the share of women running and the share of women winning, as well as individual women's level of electoral success. Overall, we find no evidence that voter bias affected outcomes for women at the 2020 Irish general election. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
