Purpose : To study the status of contribution by non-English speaking countries to international rehabilitation literature taking Japan as an example, and to suggest recommendations to overcome the language barrier. Method : Descriptive study using a systematic MEDLINE search with outcome measures of annual numbers and proportions of articles by Japanese physiatrists published in peer-reviewed English rehabilitation journals, and of categories and types of studies. A database containing 292 relevant articles were used for analysis. Results : The publications have steadily increased annually both in absolute number and in proportion. The number was the largest for Arch Phys Med Rehabil (16.8%), followed by Am J Phys Med Rehabil (12.3%), Prosthet Orthot Int (8.6%), Disabil Rehabil (5.1 %) and so on. The percentage by category was the highest for stroke (26.0%), followed by spinal cord injury (11.6%), neurophysiology (11.6%) and amputation (6.2%), 67.8% of the articles were related to evaluation, 6.5% to outcome studies and 25.7% to therapy. The majority were descriptive studies (45.5%), followed by case control studies (13.0%), before-and-after trials (12.3%), case reports (7.2%) and others. Conclusion : The contribution from Japan to international rehabilitation literature is increasing. Measures were suggested to facilitate more scientific contribution by non-English speaking researchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper compares Kant's positions on space, time, the relational character of noumena, and the relational character of the self, with the somewhat similar accounts of those things in two philosophers of the Kyoto school: Keiji Nishitani and Nishida Kitaro. I will argue that the philosophers of the Kyoto school had a more coherent and better integrated account of those ideas, that was open to Kant. This article examines the phenomenon of the cellphone novel in contemporary Japan. In contrast to dominant approaches that have focused on questions of literary merit, I explore the tempos and temporalities of the cellphone novel as reading ‘on the go’. Drawing on ethnographic accounts, I attempt to develop the notion of reading ‘on the go’ so that we may move beyond prevailing discussions of cellphone novels, which have focused mainly on the literary sophistication, or lack thereof, of cellphone novels and novelists. Additionally, I argue that there is underlying tension between ‘literature’ and ‘Literature’ vis-à-vis questions of ‘proper’ reading tempos among Japanese readers. In order to explore the political, ideological, and aesthetic ramifications of changing reading and writing practices, this article places the twenty-first century controversy over cellphone novels in dialogue with a historical precedent, the early modern literary movement known as the unification of spoken and written Japanese (genbun itchi). In so doing, the article examines a corollary relation between changes in literary trends and spatiotemporal transformations that provide a reading and writing environment. Ultimately, the article suggests that the ongoing spatiotemporal reconfigurations and negotiations prompted by the evolving digital media communication network, its infrastructure, and accompanying commercial industries play a critical role in informing how contemporary practices of reading and writing take shape. Nomizo Naoko's literature was revived to great acclaim in the 1980s after decades of neglect. However, most published commentaries deal with the fascinating myths, legends and facts surrounding Nomizo's life rather than with her texts. Nomizo published only two short stories inNyonin geijutsu: ‘Tasogare no hana: Sancta Susanna’ (‘Flowers at twilight’, 1928) and ‘Shii no banka’ (‘Elegy of a purple coat’, 1929). Although insignificant in quantity, these stories are filled with interesting themes and devices that are important not only to understand Nomizo's writing as a whole but also to understand the complexity of what is often dismissed as the cultural domain of women and children.
